Seahaven Hard of Hearing Club

On Tuesday 20th Sept 2022 members of the Committee along with the lip-reading tutor and Harley the hearing dog, went live on Seahaven FM on Len Fisher’s programme, Community People.

We were able to explain to the hearing community how deafness creates isolation both within the family and in the outside world.

One member expressed her frustration with places where a hearing loop was installed, where the was a lack of knowledge on how they work. This happens in important areas like doctors’ reception areas, banks, dentists surgeries, shops etc. In fact a lot of places that display a hearing loop sign do not seem to understand how they work. The lip-reading tutor spoke about the use of personal hearing loops and the advantages these can have to the deaf community.

The tutor also explained what a Hearing Dog does and how they significantly help deaf people. We also discussed how we coped (or not) during COVID, with the frustration of people wearing masks and not being able to read their lips or their facial expressions, and how clear visors were more helpful. How good would you be on a Jury of a murder case? This was the question put to us by our speaker, Paul Green. His talk on Sussex Murders kept us all enthralled. He started by telling us of the murder of Celia Holloway, who was killed by her bigamist husband, John Holloway in 1831. He strangled her in Margaret Street in Brighton, then cut off her head and arms and threw them into the privy. Her torso he put in a trunk and wheelbarrowed to Lovers Walk, where he buried her. She was discovered on 25th July 1831. Thousands of people helped in the search for the rest of her body. Because she had been found, Holloway went to the police and said his wife had gone missing. The police searched the area around Margaret Street and because of the smell, found the body parts and arrested him. He confessed on 27th August, was taken to Court and found guilty of wilful murder. He was hung on 21st December at Horsham, where crowds turned out to watch. How we wish justice was so quick today.

He gave us two actual cases and read some of the final prosecution and defendant’s reports, and we asked questions. In the first case, two thirds of us got it wrong. In the second case, only one person got it right. Just as well we are all over the age for Jury service today! Tea and raffle followed, and names were taken for those wanting to go to the Little Theatre.

The lip-reading classes are going well and we are learning of The Royal Mint. The final class for this term was on 11th October. The new class will start on 1st November.
