‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close-bosomed friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run’ ‘To Autumn’ by John Keats, 1795 – 1821

This poem, of which this is only a part, was one discussed two years ago in a U3A group named ‘Delight in Words’. Corny it may be may be but after all these centuries it remains one of the best-known and bestloved poems about autumn, the season fast approaching. The photograph this month (right) shows early autumn in Friston Forest, near Seaford.

The group was great fun and a good opportunity to get to know fellow members better which of course was one of the purposes of the activity. It was also an entertaining introduction to poems and poets which several of the members did not know, but there was no uncomfortable pretence of being intellectuals! Part of the U3A philosophy is to educate gently whilst remembering that learning can be fun.

The provisional Group Prospectus for members is now available with a large selection of subjects ranging from Bridge and Canasta, through Arts and Crafts, Cookery, Current Affairs, Drama, Languages and Literature, to Music, Science and Meditation.

The problem now is – can the courses can be run with social distancing? With some careful thought and use of larger premises it is to be hoped that the programme can operate as soon as circumstances allow. In previous years many groups have taken place in members’ houses but a new process of using hired rooms might be the way forward. This is going to have to be a case of ‘watch this space’ as it might be somewhat experimental.

It is particularly important to respect the Covi D-19 rules as the age groups from which most members come are vulnerable. The U3A is in fact ready to welcome anyone who has retired whether they be aged 20+ or 80+, but the majority of members are of conventional retiring age. Many members are quite understandably hesitant to be too adventurous about going out, and a reassurance will need to be given for them to participate in U3A activities.

It is hoped that people who have previously been members have renewed their membership, which fell due at the beginning of August. It is only £10 per member and the organisation needs your support to be able to offer anything. New members are of course always welcome.

The Power of Music

Have you ever wished you could play a musical instrument? Since Lockdown, many of us have been reevaluating our priorities, and discovering different ways to bring joy and meaning to our lives.

Music has always been known to help lift our spirits, and learning to play an instrument can be a hugely enriching experience which brings significant benefits, both mentally and physically.

As a violinist, I have been fascinated by a certain scientific experiment, which analysed brain scans of violinists whilst playing. These scans showed that every single area of the brain was actively involved in playing the violin. In my experience, I find this total involvement of the brain gives me a break from worries, and calms my mind.

There are so many fantastic benefits which come from learning a musical instrument – too many to list, so why not realise your ambition today, and start having lessons!

Maeve Jenkinson (Musical Director of the Corelli Ensemble) currently has a few vacancies for new pupils. She is a highly qualified and experienced violin teacher and performer, and teaches both adults and children, of all levels. She is DBS checked.

During Lockdown, one-to-one lessons continued successfully over the internet. This remains a viable option for those who need to take extra care.
