Artist Statement Every now and then working within the confines of a series provides for me an interesting exploration into the process of change. Initially a theme can act as a container from which a series evolves. In this current series the theme which emerged out of first gestures was Landscape. Yet the articulation of this theme becomes elusive as the series changes in a rather organic way to gradually reveal farther reaching and less literal aspects of composition and form. Landscape associations become ephemeral, the series progresses becoming sometimes more complex and sometimes subtler and simpler, sometimes anthropomorphic and sometimes abstract. Probably the strongest containing factor to keep a steady course throughout the series is the use of a template as a defining structure to bounce off, though as can be seen this template shape is also transformed along the way. I like the intuitive aspect of this process where the form is changing because it insists upon it, rather then my rational mind dictating how things ought to be. There is an intimacy to working in a series, a coherency which allows for a record to be kept of the inevitable twists and turns of growth. It may be the process of allowing what is not necessary to fall away and the excitement of seeing new ideas revealing themselves which is most freeing. It seems that there is a particular life span to a series, when it is complete there is a sense of closure. A series can uncover realizations about where we are with ourselves and reveal new ideas which can translate back into the travails of what we might call our major work. I suppose we can say that one’s life work is a series, but these small quicker travels can provide an accelerated view into a growth process which is always present in our lives yet is sometimes not so evident.
