Director of Children’s Education

If you love kids, love God, want our children to know God, and are organized, you have the most important gifts to be our next Director of Children’s Education! The job is for an average of 15 hours a week, with responsibilities for the education program for children K-5th grade, including: the Children’s

Wednesday programming, VBS, special events, Children’s Time in worship, staffing the Children’s and Family Ministry Committee, providing curriculum and teacher training, recruiting teachers, and supervising the nursery staff. This is a very rewarding position, as you will be a huge influence on the lives of our children as they grow in faith. If you are interested in learning more about the position, please contact the office for a complete job description, or you can download it from the church website.

First Presbyterian Church

Youth Ministry Director

This position is perfect for someone who enjoys high energy and inquisitive youth. Do you have the gifts to lead these youth to a deeper understanding of faith and God’s love for them? The position is for an average of 15 hours a week, with responsibilities for the education program for our Mid-High and Senior-High youth.

Youth Ministry Leader

There are four positions open, two for leading the MidHigh youth and two for leading the Senior-High youth. Leaders are asked to spend 3-4 hours a week to prepare and lead the weekly Bible lessons and curriculum for these two groups of youth. You would work closely with

September 2014

This includes the Mid-High Wednesday activities, the Senior-High Thursday morning and Sunday Morning activities as well as monthly events. You would attend the Youth and Young Adult Committee meetings, recommend curriculum and organize the Confirmation Class and program every two years. This position will recruit and train the Youth Ministry Leaders and adult volunteers as needed. A complete job description can be found in the office and on the church website.

the Youth Ministry Director to plan these lessons. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the youth of our church as individuals growing in faith, and to provide guidance for this growth under the theology and beliefs of the Presbyterian Church. If you love God and love our youth, you are qualified for this role.

[Sue’s Musings]

Is it just me, or does it feel like the summer went by WAY too fast? Now that we’re getting back in the swing of our fall schedule, I want to bring our attention back to who we are as a church, and what we said last Spring about who we wanted to be. Last Spring we adopted a new mission statement: LED BY CHRIST, TOGETHER IN FAITH AND LOVE, WE JOYFULLY THINK, QUESTION, GROW AND SERVE! A key component of this is “joyfully … serve.”

In many ways, we have been spoiled. We have been blessed with wonderful staff who did a lot of ministry on our behalf – teach classes, lead youth groups, organize community projects, plan children’s programs, do outreach to the community, and such. We have been fortunate, in that we have had the staff here to do that for us. Well, as you’ve probably noticed, we’re down a few staff positions right now! But that’s OK – because the ministry of the church shouldn’t depend on the presence of hired staff. We’re a gifted, caring, dedicated

congregation, and let’s be honest – we can do this! And we will be richer for it. Serving others is one of the most fulfilling things a person can do with their life. For so many people, it is what gives life meaning and purpose. John Calvin once said “no one hears the call to be a Christian without also hearing a call to serve.” Friends, now is the time to embrace that calling to serve! How, you might ask? Well, I’m glad you asked! The Stewardship Committee will be sending out a list of opportunities for service in the next week or so. We will also have the list in the bulletins on Sunday, September 7. Take a look at it – some are one time things, others are longer commitments, some require physical labor, others do not. All are important for the ministry of the church to thrive, especially during this time of transition. So will you join us in service? Come and join the fun on Wednesdays at FPC and find out! Starting Wednesday, September 3rd from 3:45 to 5:30, children ages 4 years to 5th grade will have a blast with friends playing games, eating snacks, enjoying fun activities and crafts, and learning about God. In addition to some of our favorite games like “Fire in the Forest” and “Bring Me”, we will play some new games like “Human Caterpillar” and “Kangaroo Relay”! We will be having fun and learning about the Bible by incorporating a fantastic new DVD series into the curriculum. “Buck Denver Asks … What’s in the Bible?” Phil Vischer (the creator of VeggieTales) designed this video series to teach kids (and parents!) the story of the Bible – God’s great rescue plan! We know the stories of Moses, Noah, David, and Jesus, but in this groundbreaking new Bible DVD series, we learn how they all fit together to tell one big, redemptive story. Vischer’s signature wit shines through with his all-new cast of characters, fast-paced flash animation, and catchy tunes. This is one journey through the Bible you won’t want to miss! The kids are not only beginning a journey through the Bible, but the lifelong journey of a relationship with the Living God. Come on Wednesdays and meet Buck Denver, Sunday School Lady, Chuck Wagon and many more of the hilarious characters! You won’t want to miss it! Check out the website for more information and watch a few sample videos! You will love it! http://whatsinthebible.com/video-archive/volume/vol-1/yn Still need to register? Youth + Young Adult Ministry

Youth Education Kicks off after Labor Day! Senior-High Youth have chosen to meet Sunday’s after church for their Christian Education time. Gather by 11:15 for an hour or so of engaging conversation and food! See you all on Sunday September 7, our first Sunday to meet. Thursday mornings at Moka’s will also be a feature for the High School this year. Gather at Moka’s from 7:00 am to 7:40 am for breakfast and faith discussions to start your day. Thursday, September 4 will begin this weekly gathering. Mid-High Youth will try a new meeting time this year. Rather than Wednesday evenings, they will meet early Sunday evenings. While no time is perfect for everyone, there was a general request to move the meeting out of the school week time frame due to sports and other activities that provided so many conflicts. The exact time has not yet been chosen, but will be communicated soon. This will begin on Sunday, September 7. Great progress is being made on filling the Youth Coordinator position and the Lead Roles for Mid-High and High School youth. Keep an eye out for upcoming announcements about who will be filling these important positions.

Prayer-Partner Kick Off To expand our intergenerational connections, and to demonstrate to the youth of the church the commitment the adults feel to them, we will be launching the Prayer Partner Program kick-off on Sunday, September 28 at 11:15. The Prayer Partner program is designed to connect each of our youth with a non-parent adult in our congregation. The adult will provide another caring face to the youth, pray for them and be aware of the milestones in the youth’s life…birthdays, participation in athletics, music or other activities that are important to that youth. The kick-off will provide an opportunity for the youth and their Prayer Partner to meet and to get to know each other. Like all successful FPC gatherings, there will be food provided! Those of you that have volunteered to be Prayer Partners will be receiving a letter/email soon about the program details. Anyone who has not already said they would like to participate, can still join this group. Send an email to lsalem@ cox.net and let Linda Salem know you would like to be paired with a youth of our congregation. Mark your calendar now, and set aside an hour to get to know a Mid-High or Senior-High youth.

Spiritual Life Class

READING: The Organic God, by Margaret Feinberg NEW TIME: Wednesdays, 6 pm in the Hope Room

How is your connection with God? How is your faith life? Do you want to know God better? Do you want to talk with others about your faith? Our Wednesday Night Spiritual Life Class is starting up this fall. We will be reading and talking together about Margaret Feinberg’s book, The Organic God. In this book, Feinberg explores the character of God, and invites us to encounter God in fresh ways, learning how to recognize God’s surprising ways of meeting us in our own lives. To order a copy of the book and the workbook, please let Melanie know in the office (Melanie@fpcsalina.org, or 825-0226) Cost for the book and workbook is $18.

Adult Sunday School

Living the Word is a lectionary-based weekly Bible study that is open to anyone who enjoys learning about scripture. Each week we explore one of the four scripture passages that are used in PC(USA) churches as the basis of worship. The class features lively discussion as we try to discern together how the scripture can be applied to our lives as individuals, as a congregation and as part of God’s kingdom. Because each week explores a new passage, new participants are welcome at any time. The class is led by Bret Wallace and will begin on Sunday, September 14th at 9:00am in the Hope Room.

Random Acts Re-Connecting Exploring our differences and finding our common ground – together.

Attention Women of FPC – if you’re looking for an opportunity to spend time with fascinating people, talk about challenging topics, and share healthy, yummy food, you’ll want to join us for our second year of Random Acts. Here’s what you can look forward to: Session 1: Sunday, September 28 from 5-7:30 Come for supper and a speaker on a current hot topic. Then we’ll spend some time in our groups talking about what we heard and plan for Session 2. (Bring your calendar.) Session 2: You will meet in one of your group member’s home for a time for food and conversation. Discussion materials will be provided. Session 3: Sunday, November 16 from 5-7:30. Back to the church. Details to come.

Interested? This is what you need to do: 1. Sign up on the sheet in the south entry, call the church (825-0226) or email: office@fpcsalina.org. After we’ve heard from you, we’ll place you in a group. Please sign up by Friday, September 19th. 2. Mark your calendar for Sessions 1 & 3: Sunday, September 28 and Sunday, November 16. 3. Be ready to re-connect with old friends and new. And speaking of friends, feel free to bring one along!

Announcements It’s Choir Time! One of my favorite passages from the NT is Mark 14:26 - “When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives....” The thought of Jesus celebrating the Passover with the disciples, fully aware he was facing imminent trial, punishment and execution, taking time to sing a hymn with his chosen is simply tantalizing. As a lifelong musician, I have always found great comfort in this passage. Music was obviously important to the Lord. Chancel Choir will begin Wednesday practices on September 3 at 7:00 in the choir room. We are always looking for new members! You don’t have to be a trained singer, so don’t let that stop you! Newcomers are ALWAYS WELCOME!! ALSO....if you have a musical talent you would like to share during worship, please contact Richard! We would love to hear you! Don’t let your voice fall silent! Raise it up!
