PITTSBURGH,July 18, 2011 – BNY Mellon, the global leader in investment management and investment servicing, will donate $100,000 through its Powering Potential program to support the annual campaign of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, with funds designated for two Federation-supported activities: AgeWell Pittsburgh and the Squirrel Hill Food Pantry. “With the generous support of BNY Mellon, we ensure that critical community-based services are provided to older adults as well as supplying supplemental food and basic services to disadvantaged individuals in our communities,” said Jewish Federation President and CEOJeffrey Finkelstein. “The Jewish Federation’s services help build stronger communities,” said Donald Heberle, President, BNY Mellon of Pennsylvania. “Supporting those in need in the communities in which we live and work is a key element of our approach to social responsibility.” AgeWell’s main goal consists of engaging in services for more than 10,000 aging participants at risk of losing their independence. Through AgeWell Pittsburgh, the Federation collaborates with Jewish Community Center, Jewish Association on Aging and Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JF&CS). AgeWell encompasses19 different programs including emergency food, in-home caregivers and personal wellness initiatives. Because of their collaborative efforts, 92 percent of AgeWell participants successfully avoided hospital admissions last year. BNY Mellon’s support will also be directed to the Squirrel Hill Food Pantry (SHFP), which acquires and distributes supplemental food to impoverished families who meet food assistance guidelines and require kosher food and meat. As one of the largest food banks in the Greater Pittsburgh area, SHFP works with social workers from JF&CS’s Squirrel Hill Psychological Services to assess clients’ needs as well as assist them. Last year, SHFP served over 160,000pounds of food and provided clients with nearly 400 hours of casemanagement and social work. The Jewish Federation raises and allocates resources, coordinates communal efforts, and acts as a source of support locally, nationally, and overseas. Its mission is to create an environment of lifelong Jewish learning, connect young people to Jewish community life and ensure high quality life enhancement services that address aging and human needs.
