Bus Stop Chaos In Malahide Sinn Fein Councillor for the Malahide area, Daire Ni Laoi has asked the Chief Executive whether any decision has been made regarding the relocation of the bus stop outside St. Sylvester’s Church. The reason for the relocation request is to help relieve traffic congestion in the centre of Malahide Village.
By Aoife Read It has been a long standing issue for the residents in Malahide that the bus stops outside the church causing havoc in the village especially at rush hour traffic times. With the ever increasing population of the popular coastal town, many councillors have been raising motions and pushing objectives within the council to try an alleviate some of the many traffic congestion issues that are currently plaguing Malahide residents and commuters.

Would You Adopt A Granny? Caroline English, a Malahide mum, has come up with a heart-warming idea to bring young and old people together. Caroline, 32 who lost both of her parents to separate illnesses recently, has hatched a plan that she has dubbed ‘Adopt A Granny’, where people can bring their children for visits with the
elderly in nursing homes. The idea came when she was visiting her own parents while they were sick and she noticed that many of the residents there have no one to visit them. She also noticed the joy her own son would bring to the people in the nursing home when she brought him in, and the idea was born.
She has also extended the idea to incorporate local primary schools and is currently in talks to include school children in the scheme. After sending a heartfelt email to its producers, Caroline’s idea has been taken on by a national radio station and is currently being promoted as a nationwide initiative. See full story on page 3
The combined parishes of Sacred Heart and St Sylvester’s Malahide’s pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place from 9th to 14th August. Spiritual director is Fr. John Kelly SCJ of the Sacred Heart Fathers. This is an annual event, and they take invalids and wheelchair bound people along with helpers each year. They are particularly interested in having young people attend too as they like to have young people as helpers where possible. Also taking place is a day pilgrimage to Lough Derg on 14th May and one to Knock on 25th June. If you are interested or would like any further information please contact Jo Morris on 087 616 3648

Malahide Mum Co-Ordinates Initiative Malahide mum Caroline English, has come up with a wonderful idea that was born from personal tragedy. Caroline is 32 and she lost her father a year ago and sadly lost her mother just one month ago. Both of her parents had been residents in the care of Ryevale Nursing Home in Leixlip Co. Kildare due to them both suffering from different illnesses and requiring full time care. Her father had been in the nursing home for 7 years and her mother had been there for three. Since the age of 25 she was a regular visitor to the home, a place perhaps, we shouldn’t have to frequent so often until we are of an older age ourselves, but while she was there she noticed something that saddened her deeply. She noticed that there were many people in the home that had no one to visit them. Combined with this realisation she also noticed the joy her mother would experience when she would visit with her own son Tommy. She hit upon an idea, whereby mothers with young children would give up their time to visit with elderly people in care homes. In an attempt to give companionship and friendship to people who are in a situation where they have no family of their own to visit them. Extending that, she also had the idea that local schools could come together with local nursing homes to have the children visit the

elderly as part of their Civics, Social and Personal Education classes. She has colourfully dubbed the initiative ‘Adopt A Granny’. Ms English sent an e-mail to a national radio station and the idea has gone from there. Speaking to the County Leader Ms English explains: “There was a lovely conservatory in the nursing home and you would be there in your family unit, in a very relaxed environment, but there would be other residents who would chose to sit in the conservatory who would just be looking on. They just wanted some sort of interaction. Weekends are very much structured around visits so if you are someone without visits it would be a very long day for them.” “What kicked off the idea was my mothers month’s mind mass. A mass is a lovely way to remember them but it doesn’t commemorate them. They weren’t into

anything like golf or anything so any charity matches wouldn’t be in anyway representative of their life,” she added. She explained how the idea to bring children in began; “As I’m on maternity leave, I would often go into the parish centre. A buggy is like a magnet to older people. Some times they will want to talk about the baby but sometimes it moves very quickly from talking about the baby to wanting to just have a chat. You find you’re not rushing off because you’re talking to them. So I suppose between my experiences with older people while on maternity leave and seeing the joy mum had when I would visit with my own son Tommy, that’s where the idea came from.” Caroline told us how she has a lot of friends that are on board with the idea. She has approximately 20 women who are willing to begin visits with their babies in tow.
“We are going to go every second Saturday and we are taking the babies and make that a continual thing. Hopefully it will flourish and we will get more people, interested,” she said. At the moment she has one local primary school definitely on board to begin setting up an ‘Adopt A Granny’ scheme of their own; “I am happy to say I am talking to two local school principals and one is definitely on board and one is still in talks. What they are going to do in the primary school is start off with a letter to a resident and then follow up with a visit to the resident they wrote the letter to.” It is important to note that Caroline is not doing this for any monetary gain whatsoever. What she is trying to do is encourage the idea that younger people in our communities should be visiting the older people in our communities as a matter of course. No one should have no one is the basis of her idea. “I want it publicised so that someone like me in another location might forge the link between the two and let it flourish from that. I’m happy to facilitate promoting the
idea of it. Whatever way it would work for different schools and different homes. Just to push the idea of people going to visit the elderly and vulnerable in our communities,” she said. Since initial contact with the radio show she has since been back on the show, having actually
She also spoke to Tadhg Daly in Nursing Homes Ireland who are the representative for Ireland’s 400+ private and voluntary nursing homes. From there, the radio station came up with a definitive guide to starting your own visits, called Caroline’s Adopt A Granny Movement which is available to view on their website. new mum, she was very aware that a lot of children wouldn’t have grandparents around anymore as positive influences in their lives. When we had Caroline on air there was a huge response from listeners who loved the idea and wanted to be able to do something similar. We were delighted to be able to help Caroline get her ‘movement’ going and

gone into the studio to try and push this innovative idea further. While on the show she was able to get advice from Eoghan Hanley, a transition year co-ordinator in Gort Community School in Galway who run a similar programme in their local nursing home.
Leader Pamela Blake, producer of the radio show said; “When we got an email from Caroline about her ‘Adopt a Granny’ idea, we could see how passionate she was about the concept. After losing both her parents and becoming a

benefit from it. There are so many people out there who have no one and are very lonely so the idea that someone would come and visit with them and sit with them even if it was only fort a short while is a truly lovely idea.” She went on to say; “I would even say that it could be extended to incorporate elderly people who are living at home in their own homes. Many of them get no interaction from one end of a day to the next. So if someone was to visit them in their homes it would be wonderful for them. It would provide them with companionship and something to look forward to, which really is great.” Many of our elderly people are in a situation where they are, or at the very least feel alone. Many have no family left, or have family that are too far away from them to come and visit on a regular basis. What Caroline is trying to promote would really give many people in lonely and vulnerable situations a new lease on life and provide some real comfort to many people who have become lost and disenfranchised with the modern ages, lean away from human closeness and into a technological emotional void.

Seven Trees A Tribute In The Soil Tree Week, 6th to 13th March, saw the beginning of the Seven Trees for Seven Signatories initiative. All of the villages, towns and cities, which won the overall Tidy Towns award since the competition’s inception in 1958, were presented with native Irish trees to represent the seven signatories to the Proclamation. This initiative celebrates many of the aspects of Tidy Towns; volunteering, community participation and sustainable living, all of which are essential elements in winning Tidy Towns. Beauty Trends For Spring 2016
BOYS WHO LOVE GIRLS WHO LOVE Selfridges of London have launched an agender fashion range to fly in the face of conventional fashion gender roles. The Oxford Street department store has gotten rid of its separate women and menswear departments in favour of three floors of unisex fashion. Selfridges believe that shoppers no longer want to be defined or limited by their gender as to what they can wear. Instead, they are able to shop for unisex or 'agender' clothing and the store describe the new concept as a celebration of fashion without definition.
Every Moment Is A Chance To Shine Busy week to weekend play. Offduty jaunts to night-time revels. Yves Saint Laurent Beauté knows that the 2016 digitally-empowered trailblazer is on a never-ending quest for fun – and she needs an easy, on-the-go lipstick to accompany her on the run. ROUGE VOLUPTÉ SHINE OIL-IN-STICK is a thrill-seeking partner in crime. A truly cult product, this oil-in-stick lipstick combines voluptuous glideand-go colour with built-in comfort that locks in care thanks to 6
sensorial oils that kiss lips with long-lasting moisture. Now, 12 new shades conspire to join the iconic ROUGE VOLUPTÉ SHINE OIL-IN-STICK colour wardrobe. Capturing today’s spirit of effortless spontaneity, each shade intuitively cares for lips, encapsulating the mood of today’s hedonist as she lives for the moment and snapshots her life through selfies.
Spring is rising everywhere – and with it brings a time of change and renewal. But it is not only nature that changes with the first warm sunbeam, people also love to vary their appearance along with the season. It’s a good thing that with the new season, current trends of beauty and styling also change. Local beauty stores offer new ranges with different colours, designs and ideas that are appropriate for spring. The County Leader wanted to know more and had a talk to some shops offering beauty products in North County Dublin. Roisin from McCartan’s Pharmacy said; “At the moment we have many pastel colours, suitable for spring.” Whether it’s eye shadow, Rouge or make-up – the aim is to look natural. “You
should use very light make-up, such as bbcreams instead of heavy foundations”, the beauty specialist continued. Clara, manager of Jule’s Beauty agreed, although she had this to add: “It should look natural, but we use a lot of products to make it look that way.” Contouring is on trend at the moment, where make-up in different shades is used to add structure to the face. With this look, rouge is kept quite light with hues of pink, while the lips should be brightened up with colours like coral or peach. Jule’s Beauty Salon uses mainly red and natural hues, as Clara revealed to the County Leader. When it comes to eye make up, Roisin said; “copper and light brown are the best to use when trying to get the natural look.” She

By Sarah Sievert also advised that eyebrows shouldn’t be too heavy and should be kept quite light as well. Spring colours can also be found in nail polish. “We get all the spring colours like yellow and baby blue”, said Roisin from McCartan’s Pharmacy. In general, there is always room for a bit of glitter and gloss during this season. It’s obvious spring has a great influence on beauty products and there are lots of possibilities to embellish yourself during spring 2016. Even if your makeup is worn quite light during the day, there is always the chance to jazz it up a bit in the evening by using darker lipsticks – there are always possibilities for variations. Another way for getting you ready for spring is to get that smooth effect with laser hair removal. Surprised? From year to year more people make appointments for these treatments which are becoming quite popular. “Men are getting more interested in beauty over the last few years”, said Sharon from Sensius Laser Hair Removal. She told us that they like to have treatments for their cheeks or even their whole face, while

women prefer to laser their bikini zones and underarms. The big advantage is that it lasts longer that shaving and is a lot less painful than the traditional waxing. But Sharon also added that the results vary from person to person. There’s one more reason to visit the Sensius clinic and that is that they also offer tattoo removals. “Many people will have picked tattoos when they were either drunk or teenagers and they no longer like them.” Summer time isn’t far away and people want to go swimming and wear bikinis, so now is a good time to remove your tattoo, because you have to do it two months before showing the affected skin. Another point is that many couples get married in either spring or summer. “There are many customers that are going to have weddings and want to have removed their tattoos before their important day”, added the beauty expert. So it’s important to think early about what you want to look like in spring and summer, because these treatments take their time. These days it is really important to accessorise – like for example, getting the right glasses. Especially in spring, many people are searching for new glasses, or for the right sunglasses for the upcoming summer. Even if you don’t need them it is getting more and more popular to wear them just as a fashion statement. But what are the current trends for stylish glasses? The County Leader had a look at one of the new collections from Specsavers Opticians which is called ‘Love Maschino”. Fitting to the name, the collection includes many frames with frivolous patterns in red. The rim is usually black however they impress with their unusual shape. With regards to the sunglasses, it is the plain and thick frames in either black or white that will give the appearance of simple elegance. So people who want to prepare for summer should start early when searching for the right accessories, before the all best ones are gone. With a comprehensive look at the new collections in your local store and enough time to pick out your favourite things, nothing can go wrong this season!

Jack Mulhern’s mother, Caroline, entered and as a result of Caroline answering 5 questions correctly, the radio station brought the NASA engineer to the school along with employees of NASA. Thomas gave a very interesting talk to the children who were all assembled in the schools PE hall. He explained to them what it is like to be in space, how you eat, wash, sleep etc. and showed them various slides and pictures of inside the shuttle, and the earth from above. It was a colourful and fascinating talk that had the children and the adults present in rapture from start to finish.

After the long winter, our houses and gardens usually don’t look the way we want them to. Take the opportunity now to revitalise yours! With a few simple steps it will be completely transformed:
DO IT YOURSELF If you like to do some improvements in your house, it’s the best way to create some lovely
things on your own. Take time to sit down with your children, take out the watercolours and paint together nice family or spring pictures which you hang up on the walls. Or have a walk outside, collect some seasonal flowers that begin to flourish now and press them between the pages of heavy books to make them durable. You can create an album with
them or just stick them on papers which you hang up in the house. It’s fitting for spring, you do something together as a family and your children can learn something about the nature. And there are still lots of other possibilities to tinker something spring-themed that is even quite useful. Make for example your own flowerpots for this spring

QUALITY, VALUE AND STYLE
If you’ve already cleaned your house and prepared everything for spring, have you thought about cleaning your car? When the sun is shining more often and people go outside and walk along the streets you should necessarily think about the state of your car. After all it looks much better shining and fresh polished than with the old mud and dust of the winter months on it. And of course you will use it more often for spring excursions, so have a check if everything’s alright and the car is still roadworthy!
A PLACE TO RELAX Your furniture - garden chairs and tables - may have a miserable look due to the heavy rainfall and storms this winter. There are two possiblities to solve this problem: either repainting and fixing
your current furniture or buying new one. You can find the apprpopriate waterproof paint - why not in exciting colours such as yellow and blue? varnish and maybe also a few screws in the local stores. Insist in being helped by all the (old enough)family members. You could let them decide in which colour they want each to paint a chair for a more colourful garden. If this is too much work for you, get informed about new furniture to relax on in the following months. There are plenty of special offers during the following weeks.
BUILD NEW POSSIBLITIES You probably have a lot of gardening tools in your garden but now real place to store them. Get active by building (or buying) a small cupboard or even a hut for them. This may be a little expensive, but it will transform your garden completely. If you store them properly, they are also less likely to get affected by the Irish weather. If you have children, think of installing a swing or a little football pitch with small goal posts so that they can enjoy themselves as much as you do on the warm summer afternoons that will hopefully come soon.

The Dublin Fingal Rotary held a lunch last week in honour of International Women’s Day. At the event, was a guest speaker, Carol Brill, and the presentation of a cheque to local charity Remember Us. It was a hugely successful lunch, with well over the estimated numbers in attendance. Carol Brill gave a very moving speech. Carol suffers from Usher syndromes, a genetic condition that affects her sight and hearing. She told how she fell into a depression and couldn’t accept her illness, but how a light at the end of the tunnel came in the form of her daughter. When she was born, her outlook changed. Her life had been laced with tragedy, having lost a son previous to the birth of her baby girl 8 years ago. At the beginning of her speech she posed the question, ‘Imagine not being able to see or hear your children, imagine how terrible that would be?’ Now she is determined to live her life to the full, making memories she can always call back in her mind’s eye long after her sight has failed her. She said that ‘The way my daughter sees my illness has made me view it through new eyes.’ It was a beautiful and uplifting speech by a very courageous woman and a very fitting speaker to celebrate what it means to be a woman on International Women’s Day. A toast was raised by all the men in the room to the women in attendance to signify the respect given and deserved to the women in their lives

Along with her qualifications, Edel has also displayed great determination and resilience, when she opened the business initially in a very unstable market at the height of the recession. She saw the opportunity to open a business in North County Dublin, where she could utilise her extensive experience, together with her

said, “Balbriggan has seen substantial growth in the last few years, which has been driven by two key factors, affordability and accessibility. With it being a seaside town, with a good rail and bus network, proximity to the M1, there is a huge demand in the rental market in

Malahide Rugby Club Win Local Derby
TRY! Malahide Rugby Club score an all important try against Skerries.
Malahide United Girls Seeking New Players Malahide United are currently recruiting new players for a number of their teams. The County Leader recently covered the girls U15 team’s spectacular win against Clonee Utd. The team is going from strength to strength and they are looking to get some more quality players on board. The Malahide United girls play in the Metropolitan Girls League and they train each Tuesday in Gannon Park from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Currently they are looking for new players for their under 12’s, under 14’s, under 15’s and under 16’s girls teams. The club is a winning club with a real sense of community at its heart. If you are interested in joining them contact the club directly.
Malahide Rugby Club 2nd XV took on Skerries in the Metro league last Sunday at Estuary Road. On a cool, but otherwise perfect afternoon for rugby, this was a must win for Malahide in their pursuit of the league. Skerries were determined to make it a difficult afternoon for Malahide, and started the game at a very high pace with the ball coming through their back line very quickly from the breakdown. From a ruck just inside the Malahide 22, Skerries made a breakthrough with the centre going over for a try under the posts, which was promptly converted to 7-nil. From the restart Skerries gathered the ball and made their way back into the Malahide 22, where Malahide conceded a penalty, which again was promptly converted by a very

steady Skerries kicker. With only ten minutes gone, Malahide found themselves down by ten points. This seemed to wake Malahide up, and from the re-start and resulting ruck Malahide turned the ball over. After several passages of play, Malahide managed to get the ball over the line in the corner. This seemed to galvanise the home team and they managed to cross the Skerries line a further three times in the first half without reply from the travelling team. Half-time score Malahide 20-10 Skerries. When the second half kicked off Malahide were determined to press home early for a win, and crossed the Skerries line again within ten minutes, this time the conversion was slightly easier and seven points from this forage into the Skerries territory seemed to settle them down and play some fast smart rugby. A further three tries, with two converted from Malahide, were replied to by Skerries taking their chances and running over two converted tries of their own. Malahide ran out comfortable winners in the end, and the win lifted them to second in the league. Full-time Malahide 46 - 24 Skerries.
