Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Trade , Darragh O’Brien TD has expressed his disappointment that Ibrahim Halawa’s case has been postponed for the fourteenth time, Abrahim has been detained in an Egyptian jail awaiting trial. The next trial date has been set for October 2nd. Commenting on the issue Deputy O’Brien said, “I am very disappointed and gravely concerned that Ibrahim Halawa’s trial has been postponed for the fourteenth time. This situation is becoming increasingly absurd and cannot be allowed to continue indefinitely.” “I recently met with Ibrahim’s sister Somaia to discuss her brother’s case and she O’Brien TD expressed her hope and belief that today would bring some conclusion to this long-running saga. I am sure that the Halawa family must be bitterly disappointed and disheartened by this further delay,” he said. “Ibrahim is an Irish citizen and has been detained without trial for almost three years. I am calling on the Government to explore every option available to them to secure Ibrahim’s release. It is simply unacceptable that there appears no end in sight to this case, and at this point we can no longer trust that the next trial date, set for the 2nd October, will actually come to pass,” he added. He went on to say; “My colleague Senator Mark Daly, Seanad Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Trade & the Diaspora, has raised this issue in the Seanad this morning and has called on the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade to appear before the Seanad next week to explain the further delay in this case. I hope that the Minister will make himself available in this regard.” “It is imperative that Ibrahim’s case is kept to the fore and that our opposition to this, now indefensible situation, is communicated to the Egyptian authorities in the clearest possible terms,” concluded Deputy O’Brien. Vincent Harrison while speaking to the County Leader. “Cyprus has traditionally been a popular destination for Irish holidaymakers and this new scheduled service will make it much easier for Irish consumers thinking about a summer break in Cyprus,” he said. Cyprus is one of the Mediterranean’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting more than two million visitors annually. Dublin Airport has had charter services to Cyprus in the past, but this will be its first direct scheduled service to the island. Fares from Dublin to Larnaca will start at €99 return. St. Sylvester’s Infant School held a special assembly on Monday 27th June last. Fr. Frank Rayburn, Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Parish, Yellow Walls, arrived to the school and blessed all the new classrooms. Each class planted a Cherry Blossom tree to mark the occasion and enjoyed an ice-cream afterwards. Mrs Dunne, Principal and Mrs Boyne, Chairperson of the Board of Management buried a Time Capsule which is to be opened in 2066. The children put items reflecting 2015-16 into it, such as photos of when the new building was under construction, the school’s 2016 Proclamation, games, money and today’s newspaper. Mrs Dunne wrote a letter to the Principal of 2066 to be read upon opening. There was lots of beautiful singing at the assembly and the children are all so happy with their new extension. Centenary Art Competition Winners Deputy Mayor Cllr Eithne Loftus, has announced the prize winners of the 2016 Centenary Art Competition. The art competition, part of the Local Authorities 2016 Centenary Programme, asked primary school children across the County to think about transport in 1916 Ireland and to draw pictures of how they imagined transport would look like 100 years from now. A total of 1,309 applications were received from 40 schools across the county. The overall prize winners were as follows: 1st Prize, Annie Kinsella, 4th Class Pope John Paul’s NS Malahide; 2nd Prize Hezamary Paul, 4th Class Holy Family NS River Valley; 3rd Prize Filip Buliga, 1st Class St Ciarán’s NS, Hartstown. By Aoife Read on display in Fingal Libraries starting in Blanchardstown but they will tour the county so look out for them in your local library. The chosen theme of travel for this competition stems from the fact that in 1916 many of the messages delivered to the volunteers would have been by bicycle. Bicycles were also a symbol of freedom, especially for women as it allowed them to travel greater distances away from their home-place and move towards the greater independence that would unfold in the
coming years. In Fingal, female messengers such as Mary (Molly) Adrien delivered dispatches from Padraig Pearse in the GPO to Thomas Ashe in the Swords area. Speaking to the County Leader, Chief Executive of the County Council, Paul Reid said; “What strikes me is the wealth of artistic talent among our young people in Fingal. As Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, I would like to thank everyone who participated. I would also like to thank the teachers and parents who supported the children in getting the applications to us. Without this support none of this would have been possible. The job we had to pick the winners was a difficult one but none the less we are here
today to celebrate the winning entries”. Deputy Mayor, Cllr Eithne Loftus, thanked the prize sponsors; Halfords Bicycles, Swords, the Irish Cycling Centre and Draíocht who very kindly provided the prizes for the competition. She thanked all of the students for their applications; “Getting young children involved in the Fingal 1916 Centenary Commemorations has been really high on our priority list; we wanted them to understand the contribution that men and women of Fingal made at the Battle of Ashbourne, the Mendicity Institute, the GPO and other locations around Dublin during the events of the 1916 Rising. This art competition has, I think helped them to understand what it was like for people in Ireland 100 years ago particularly with regard to transport.”

National LGBT Strategy For Young People The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone T.D, has announced that her Department is to lead the development of Ireland’s first national Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Strategy for young people. Speaking during Pride celebrations in Dublin, Minister Zappone said: “Ireland was shown as a beacon of equality with the result of last year’s marriage referendum trending on social media world-wide. It is something we can always be immensely proud of.” “However as people from across the globe gathered for Pride last weekend it is also important to reflect on the barriers and challenges
which remain, in particular for younger members of our community,” she said. She went on to say; “The LGBT Ireland Report published recently identified barriers to good mental health, including bullying at school, fear of rejection and discrimination, harassment and violence and negative attitudes and stereotypes. The report shows higher levels of self harm and suicidal behaviour among LGBT teenagers as well as worrying levels of severe and extremely severe stress, anxiety anddepression. As a Government we must respond. As Minister for Children I can now confirm that a new national Lesbian Gay
Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Strategy for young people will be developed to build on the National Youth Strategy (2015) which aims to enable all young people to realise their maximum potential by respecting their rights, hearing their voices and addressing their concerns,” she added. Zappone concluded by saying; “Regional events, an online forum and those groups who have been championing the rights of the LGBT Community will inform our work and together we will strive for an Ireland which is truly fair, just and equal for all of our young people.”

EU Game Not Played Out Yet David Cameron having lost the Brexit Referendum played great cards in its aftermath. He bought time not just for Britain, to realise the extent of the decision taken, but he also has made space for the other member states to appreciate the actual implications of Brexit on the future of the EU. In the week since, there have been lots of plays mainly in the UK but it seems from comments across Europe that there are a lot of cards yet to be played. Brexit is just one aspect of a much larger developing political landscape across Europe. The Spanish Election again saw PM Marino Rajoy again fail to secure a majority. For the moment ,Rajoy looks set to retain office in some form as a minority administration. The Austrian Presidential election has to be rerun due to the possibility of election irregularities. Italy faces a referendum on electoral practice on which the PM has staked his career. Poor Dave may not be the only resignation following a referendum result this year. Both the French President and Rajoy say their countries will oppose any negotiation with Scotland before the UK has formally departed the Union. This will be an added factor in how the exit negotiations are conducted and will put great pressure on the London Government

to be mindful of the result in both Scotland and N. Ireland. It may well be that the next British PM will before serving notice on the EU go immediately to the country seeking a mandate to negotiate for Britain the best deal with the EU. And on their return to power, negotiate with a very changed Council of Ministers By Cathal Boland and Commission. Many countries have strong movements calling for reform and some seek referendums to decide their future within the EU. The EU must be careful in how it proceeds across many fronts and it must be cautious of how they deal with TTIP. Recent indications are that the commission are prepared to make what is described as political decision (compromises) to secure an agreement by the end of the year. Such action may fuel the Stop TTIP campaign and galvanise the movement calling for state ratification of an agreement which has major implications for each member state and their citizens. In both France and Germany the heavyweights are now formulating strategies on how to fix Europe. Some of the policies floating in Républican Party circles are not that far removed from what the UK seems to have wanted. All players appear to know that real reform must happen if the European Project is to survive. Some have yet to learn that in a democracy every person counts.

The MI motorway means that it has never been easier for North County residents to get to Drogheda, which is widely regarded as one of the most desirable shopping destinations in the country. For people from the North County, Drogheda provides a very pleasant shopping alternative to Dublin city, where lack of parking spaces is an ongoing problem. The M1 motorway changed the face of shopping in Drogheda and two large retail parks are situated immediately as you enter from the motorway. Due to its size, Drogheda can satisfy all of the shopping needs for people of the North County, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere that will appeal to all.
Another great advantage that shopping Drogheda has over places like Dublin city, is that it is more compact and intimate, with more independently owned shops where you are more likely to be served by the owner, rather than shops that belong to a retail chain. In many of these shops, you will be served in a friendly and engaging manner, where the latest news items will be discussed in a friendly atmosphere. However, this does not mean that multinational stores are absent from Drogheda - they are there in abundance, providing Continued on page 10

These are West Street, Shop Street, Peter Street, and Laurence Street. What is more, a number of retail parks have developed around Drogheda in the past 15 years or so, mainly on the southern and western side of the town, which allows you to have the fun of having an adventure of researching the goods you like. There are also some friendly coffee shops, to add to your enjoyment. A shopping trip to Drogheda is a must. A great time to visit Drogheda on your shopping spree, would be on 9th and 10th July next where you can enjoy the Maritime Festival, where Drogheda takes advantage of its seaside location. The town is the home of one of the country’s most famous and beautiful Catholic churches, St Peter’s located right in the heart of Drogheda’s main thoroughfare. Dating back to the 18th century, it houses the preserved head of St Oliver Plunkett (1625-1681) in its lavish
interior. Drogheda is also famous as a heritage centre, with a rich history. The notorious Oliver Cromwell is also tragically associated with Drogheda, where he and his army massacred thousands of townsfolk in the late 1640s. In recent years Drogheda’s economy has diversified from its traditional industries, with an increasing number of people employed in the retail, services and technology sectors. The town also has a community of independent artists and musicians who have been looking to the local economy rather than Dublin for employment. Not only does Drogheda tick all the boxes where excellent shopping is concerned, it is also a wonderful destination for the entire family. Continued on page 15

With summer well and truly in full swing, it’s a high time to start thinking about some new and fresh ways to cheer up your home and your garden, especially as we have been blessed with some lovely weather lately. A neatly kept garden is the first impression a visitor gets of your house. This first impression is lasting and if your garden is not kept up to scratch, it’s unlikely that your home will be any better. Now is the perfect time to start tidying up your garden. If you need a major clean-up, you will need to engage the services of a professional landscaper. Luckily there are many such companies here in the North County, who will provide you with a top class service to make sure your garden, the entrance to your home looks at it’s best. With smaller gardens, you may be in a position to undertake small jobs. Sowing a new lawn can be undertaken now, with local garden centres ready to provide you with all your requirements and to give excellent advice. Larger jobs, like paving and decking will give your house an added dimension and
which will give a fresh look to your room.
BEDROOM
can provide that allimportant outside room, which can be enjoyed in the brighter evenings.
GARDEN FENCING AND DECKING Decking is incredibly effective in wet conditions as their design allows for maximum drainage meaning an end to boggy conditions under foot, meaning cleaner kids and no footprints through the house. Perfect for climbing frames, table and chairs for BBQ evenings as well. Fencing can be cut to ornate designs to set out a decorative perimeter to any garden which can also be stained to any shade of teak, pine, etc. Professional deck layers
and fence erectors provide a crucial professional finish to a garden or garden decking area for BBQ’s, children’s swings, tables, chairs and more.
KITCHEN It’s easy to get prepared for the summer in the kitchen. Most likely you’ll be inspired by longer days; cooking a bit lighter food and perhaps trying out some new recipes, so the fresh smell fulfilling the house will give a hint of new not only to your taste buds, but also to the whole house. Why not also get more into freshness by growing your own herbs? One of the best ways to cheer up your kitchen for the
QUALITY, VALUE AND STYLE
warmer days is to let the light flow in. So, leave the dark, heavy curtains for winter and go for some thin, translucent fabric instead. When changing the curtains and blinds, think about all the spring colours and choose the lightest and brightest options. Browse around the local decoration shops here in the North County to get some inspiration and don’t be too shy to try out something totally new, or trust the classic spring colours such as green or yellow and white.
BATHROOM The same tricks can work wonders as well in the bathroom as in any other room of the house, so start off by trying to refresh with little things. So, get your towels updated and see if it’d be about time to get some new, different coloured ones. Find some matching storage boxes as that’s the one sure way to keep your bathroom clean. Organise the thick and heavy toiletries behind the shelves and replace the products with lighter ones. If there’s a little window in your bathroom, try changing to a new type of glass if you feel this is needed, or even just place some ornaments close to the window ledge.
LIVING ROOM Summer brings people together both outdoors and in, so make sure your living room is very welcoming to family and friends. Get rid of the thick and heavy cushions and replace them with some smaller, lighter ones. Place large plants on the corners of the room and by the window and get some smaller ones to fill the place elsewhere. Otherwise, keep the decoration spacious and light, even minimalistic, as well as all the fabric and colour choices. That includes the curtains, blinds and such but also in furniture. If you have no need to buy a totally new sofa, you can always get a new cover for it to make it look brand new. You can also update the wall pictures
Scrutinise the room for objects that appear to be unwelcoming or cold. For example, replace the candle sticks that have a colder design for something summer-like. Also get rid of all kinds of clutter that you know won’t see the light of day for ages. Remember the sun can make your bedroom look so much brighter and bigger too, so pull up those blinds and let the light in. Now is also a good time to change your cushion covers for something lighter, so you can keep the oh-so-cosy and
warm coloured ones to wait for next winter and get something light instead. Silk, cotton or lace, sunny yellow, fresh green or sky blue, there’s so much to choose from. In the bedroom the curtains have a massive effect, so
change them to something to get you up with the sunlight in the morning. Match them with the cushion covers or go minimalistic, i.e. with some translucent fabric, to create the airy feeling and fresh look to the room.

Local councillor, Joe Newman is pictured on Forest Road, Swords, the scene of multiple water main bursts over the years
Newman Concerned About Irish Water Commitment Local councillor Joe Newman (NP) is concerned that Irish Water is set to renege on its commitment to provide the vital 30 inch water main in Swords in the timeframe agreed. He told the County Leader, “I had a meeting recently with Irish Water regarding a number of issues and one of them was about the 30 inch water main on Forest Road in Swords, which has a history of bursting on a regular basis over the past 30 or so years. “I asked them when they were actually going to do the work, as I had a commitment that they would start in Q4 of 2016 and now it seems they have rowed back on that commitment and we are looking a somewhere in 2017, finishing in 2018. “What concerns me about this is that if this is put on the long finger, nothing will be done about it. We’ve just had a burst at Ballintrane Wood estate and one towards the Retail Park not so long ago. We need to have this water main replaced as soon as possible, as it will save money in the long term and I have concerns about their initial commitment. It seems ridiculous and hugely expensive to have to constantly repair this main, which is happening on a regular basis since I’ve been living in Swords,” said Newman. “Replacing this water main is of the utmost urgency, particularly with what’s happened recently with water charges and that they may renege on their commitment,” he said. The water main is proposed to start beside Forrest Little and go down Forest Road past the Garda station and terminate at Balheary, with part of it already completed on Swords Main Street.
