At the end of May, the Transition Years of Malahide Community School will head off to Killarney for their annual cycling trip which has been running for many years now. In preparation for this trip, the students took part in a 10km practice cycle in Malahide, to get the legs ready for the big cycle. This year it has been decided to use this 10km cycle to raise much needed funds for the Dublin Simon Community’s Mobile Health Clinic, which is in great need of replacement. The students have worked very hard to gather these much needed funds and have raised an amazing €5,000 (which includes €700 from the Transition Years Mentors 1916 Commemoration Badge sales). The cycle took place on the 18th May at 11am and the students were blessed with good weather.

When Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced the names of the Government’s new junior ministers last Thursday, there was great disappointment locally that Malahide based Fine Gael TD, Alan Farrell was overlooked for one of the posts.

John Samsone from the Dublin Simon Community told the County Leader, “This funding is vitally important for the Dublin Simon Community. At the moment we have a service that is running for many years, called a Mobile Health Clinic, which is essentially a doctor’s surgery on wheels which provides for rough sleepers and homeless people in Dublin. The truck has seen better days and is constantly breaking down and we urgently need a new health clinic . The funds from today’s cycle will go directly to that, so €5,000 is a huge sum of money. What the kids have done here is of massive importance to the homeless of Dublin, so a huge thank you to the students and teachers of Malahide Community School for this wonderful gesture,” he said.

Sean and Niall McDonagh of High Rock Productions

Portmarnock based theatre company High Rock Productions are set to launch their new comic sketch show, Ireland a Survivors Guide, on June 1st in the International bar on Wicklow Street. The show is a roller coaster guide to Irish people, culture and customs and previews have been going down a storm with tourists and locals alike. The production company, which was founded by local brothers Sean and Niall McDonagh ran a promotional night in February for the Irish Association of Tour guides and the phenomenally positive reaction led to an invite from Failte Ireland to entertain the Foreign Press on St Patrick’s Day this year. Speaking to the County Leader, Sean McDonagh of High Rock productions said; “The feedback has been

They honed their physical comedy skills over the past 5 years by travelling around the country doing comic sketch shows in Irish for Leaving Cert students . No Water Quality Monitoring For Low Rock There was disappointment for local councillor, Anthony Lavin (FG) recently when his proposal to monitor the water quality at Low Rock, Malahide, was rejected by the council. Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr Lavin said; “I’m disappointed that Low Rock, which is relatively safe, but is not promoted as a designated bathing spot , won’t be monitored. I’m confident that the water quality is good there, as it is between Malahide and Portmarnock beach. I will keep going with the motion to make Low Rock a designated bathing spot. At some point then, that

could be then presented for a blue flag. That is what is motivating me with the whole thing.”

By Aoife Read He went on to say; “The water quality, which is normally a problem for most places, is good there, so it would just be a matter of addressing the infrastructure of it to ensure safety and turn it into a designated bathing spot. I know there are many Low Rock bathers who are anxious to see this happen.” The Council’s response stated that while water quality will be

Lavin simply stated that there would be no monitoring taking place in Low Rock, with no reason given as to why. Lavin concluded by saying; “Despite my disappointment with the fact that they won’t be monitoring Low Rock, I was glad to see that they are monitoring the water quality in Malahide. I had been concerned that, as it’s not being presented for a blue flag, that it might have fallen outside of the council’s priorities, so I was glad that it hasn’t.”

Launch Of 2016 Community Spirit Awards Former, Irish soccer star, Niall Quinn and Dublin Bus CEO Ray Coyne were joined recently by Malahide Basketball Club, who benefited from winning a prize bursary from last year’s Dublin Bus Community Spirit Awards (CSAs). Coming together to launch the CSAs for 2016 were Malahide Basketball Club, and a handful of other bursary prize winners from last year. The event took place in Dubhlinn Gardens in Dublin Castle in the City Centre. It was a great day and as part of the fun of the launch, Niall, Ray and members of these

community groups tried their luck at a basketball pass-around, with the guidance of Malahide Basketball Club. The club also had the opportunity to talk about how the receipt of their bursary last year benefited them and went towards improving their local community. Using long-term, unclaimed passenger change, Dublin Bus helps the community groups of Dublin reach their full potential through the CSAs. The initiative empowers local groups by supporting community development projects. From

youth groups to football clubs, from silver surfer courses to community gardens and from scout groups to homework clubs these grassroots volunteer groups are at the centre of the real spirit of communities in Dublin. The Dublin Bus Community Spirit Awards provides funding for these groups to develop new projects, grow services and help raise community spirit. Any voluntary group is eligible to apply for a grant of €1,000, €2,000 or €5,000.

Speaking to the C o u n t y Leader, O’Brien said; “The new programme for government is full of vague intentions and aspirational language about what the government would like to do. In the section of the document which deals with Transport there is a lack of detail and concrete commitments as to what the government will actually do.” “I welcome the continued promise to fund Metro North, complete the Luas Cross City and to increase the provision of wheelchair accessibility in the taxi fleet; but these had already been announced previously. The reality is that there were other large scale infrastructural public transport projects planned for Dublin that were scrapped by the previous Fine GaelLabour coalition. Projects such as the DART interconnector need to be given consideration again,” he added. He further stated that; “Capacity is a major issue in the city and is getting worse. The Dublin Bus fleet is already struggling at peak times. Minister Ross needs to devise a plan to increase the capacity, frequency and reliability of the Dublin Bus fleet.” “Much progress has been made increasing the numbers of cyclists in Dublin in recent years. The Dublin Bikes scheme has been a great success, but it should be extended to suburbs outside of the city centre, and into other local authority areas like Fingal and South Dublin CoCo,” said O’Brien. “Over the weekend it was worrying to hear Minister Ross pitch himself in the role of commen ta to r , r a the r tha n a s the p e r so n responsible for the nation’s public transport infrastructure and strategy. Dublin needs a proactive attitude to public transport provision and not to embark on a hands-off, laissez-faire approach” concluded Deputy O’Brien.

All this while she is also studying for her Junior Certificate.” She went on to say; “Kate is a fantastic ambassador for Malahide CS and her election as Student Council Support officer for the ISSU is national recognition for the great work that she does both in school and in our community. Malahide Community School are really proud of Kate and we are very excited to see what she will do in the future.”

Things like section 37 being amended because we have teachers being subjected to discrimination in schools etc., so I think that while the referendum was a fantastic victory, we still have a lot to do, so I think a monument would be a great idea to honour the work that was done.” We also ran a poll on our website where we asked you to give your opinion on the same question, the results of that poll are that 62 percent of people who took part in the poll said that they would like to see a monument to the LGBT movement built in the Swords Cultural Quarter,

32.9 per cent said they wouldn’t like it at all, and 5.1 per cent said that they think a monument is a good idea, however, ‘not in their back yard‘. It is interesting to note that the results of our poll almost exactly reflect the results of the marriage referendum last year, which was 62 per cent in favour of Gay Marriage and 38 per cent against it.

Last week we asked local councillors whether or not they felt a monument to the LGBT movement would be an appropriate addition to the Swords cultural quarter that is currently in development. Some councillors who hadn’t had the opportunity to respond to us by the time we went to press last week, have since gotten in touch with us to let us know their opinions: Phillip Lynam, Sinn Fein said; “In regards to your question about the monument, I would have no problem with one been erected in the North County at all and I think it would be a great idea. This referendum was such a honour to have been a part of, we in Sinn Féin led the charge in Fingal canvassing for weeks on end meeting families and chatting to the LGBT community door to door bringing the message of equality and fairness which we strive for within our party. Where would the best place be to erect it? I am not sure on the exact place but would support any idea brought forward with consultation as on any monument been erected.” JP Browne, Fine Gael said; “I thought the equality referendum was a giant stride forward, where the people of Ireland voted for a more equal and just society. It was really something special to see all the people flying home from all corners of the world to cast their vote. I would welcome a monument to

Local Students Reach National Final Students from Fingal Community College, Swords and St Joseph’s Secondary School, Rush made the national final of Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s (SEAI) One Good Idea competition for their energy awareness projects which tackled climate change. The Fingal Community College students’ project involved creating an app for android mobile phones which sounds an alarm when the user’s mobile phone is fully charged to remind them to UnplugIT! After surveying around 600 students and 55 staff, they believe the final reach of their project was 15,000 people from using their social media platforms to communicate to a

wider audience. They are now currently working towards getting the app available to Apple users. St. Joseph’s Secondary School’s One Good Idea project encouraged students to walk or cycle to school to reduce their carbon impact. They also had a designated walk/cycle to school day. The students used the quiz app Kahoot to create a quiz about the important facts about greener travel for their campaign. Now in its eighth year, One Good Idea, sponsored by AIB, attracted entries from over 113 primary and postprimary schools from across the country, showing an increase of 25 per cent in participation levels from 2015. Finalists showcased their energy effi-

ciency themed projects using drama, song, art and electronic apps. Speaking to the County Leader about the success of the competition, William Walsh, Interim CEO of SEAI said: “Too often we can think that issues like climate change are beyond our grasp. However, the One Good Idea competition taps into the endless creativity, imagination and energy of students. Through their inspiring energy awareness campaigns, these students are demonstrating that we all have a role to play in addressing climate change. We can all be more efficient in our energy use and we can collectively play an important part in this environmental priority.” Ray O Neill, AIB’s Head

of Sustainable Business commented: “AIB is supporting SEAI to deliver this One Good Idea programme as part of a range of initiatives we are undertaking around the environment, as it has consistently delivered awareness of key issues in schools and in the wider community through the student campaigns. Primary schools are a

recent addition to the competition and the students’ confidence and energy in presenting their campaigns is inspiring. Their efforts and those of their supportive teachers and parents are to be commended in raising awareness of climate change.” Prizes included a €1,500 cash prize for the overall winning school, tablets for team members and a voucher for their teacher.

DIABETES AND YOUR EYES Diabetes can harm your eyes. It can damage the small blood vessels in your retina, which is the back part of your eye. This condition is called diabetic retinopathy. Diabetes also increases your risk of having glaucoma, cataracts, and other eye problems. You may not know there is any damage to your eyes until the problem is very bad. Your doctor can catch problems early if you get regular eye exams. If your doctor finds eye problems early, medicines and other treatments may help prevent them from getting worse. You need regular eye exams every year, you should have an eye exam by an eye doctor

(ophthalmologist). Choose an eye doctor who takes care of people with diabetes.

WHEN TO CALL THE DOCTOR Call your doctor if: You cannot see well in dim light. You have blind spots. You have double vision (you see 2 things when there is only 1). Your vision is hazy or blurry and you cannot focus. You have pain in your eyes. You are having headaches. You see spots floating in your eyes. You cannot see things on the side of your field of vision. You see shadows.

FOOT CARE WITH DIABETES

injury. Make sure your health care provider checks your feet at least once a year - more often if you have foot problems. Your health care provider should also give you a list and explain the do’s and don’ts of foot care.

Your health care provider should perform a complete foot exam at least annually - more often if you have foot problems. Remember to take off your socks and shoes while you wait for your physical examination. Call or see your

health care provider if you have cuts or breaks in the skin, or have an ingrown nail. Also, tell your health care provider if your foot changes colour, shape, or just feels different (for example, becomes less sensitive or hurts).

Inspect your feet every day, and seek care early if you do get a foot

DIABETES & DENTAL CARE Probably the greatest impact of diabetes on dental health is that it can leave people more prone to gum disease. Most people in the population will experience or encounter some degree of gum disease (to a greater or lesser extent) throughout life. Gum disease is caused by oral bacteria. Poor glycaemic control as a complication of diabetes can make gum disease worse because it changes the immune response to these bacteria. This is especially so if someone has exposure to high glucose levels before diagnosis or starting treatment for their diabetes. Gum disease may just affect your teeth and gums, but can also be more widespread affecting your overall general health and glycaemic control. In its earliest form (gingivitis), it causes the gums to be inflamed so that they bleed on brushing and flossing. In its more

progressive and advanced form (periodontitis), it causes bone and tooth loss by destroying the tissues that support and hold your teeth in place. The best way of finding out if you have any gum problems is to be screened by a dental professional. They can often pick it up at a much earlier stage by carefully and gently probing around the gums to measure the separation between the tooth and the gum (‘pocketing’). This is also checked against dental X-rays that record the bone levels around the teeth. Having your teeth and gums checked regularly tends to be the best form of defence when it comes to making sure you don’t run into problems. But don’t forget – if you do have problems, they are usually very easily managed. In general, the earlier they are diagnosed and treated the better.

EXERCISE AND DIABETES You’ll benefit from exercise in a number of ways.

It’ll lower your blood glucose, your treatment will work more effectively and you may lose some weight. Exercise will strengthen your muscles and joints. Exercise also lowers your blood pressure, and can help with cholesterol management, both of which are good for your heart. Finally, being in good shape will increase your self-confidence and help you feel good about yourself.

BEFORE EXERCISING CONSIDER It is important that you choose the kind and amount of exercise that is right for you and that you will enjoy. Before you begin an exercise programme, you should consider your general health, your current physical fitness and how well your diabetes is controlled. Discuss your choice of exercise with your diabetes care team. If you have complications from diabetes or other health problems, there may be some sports that are more suitable for you than others. It’s a good

idea to test your blood sugar after exercise. If it is normal or low, you should eat some more carbohydrates. Be aware that hypoglycaemia can develop several hours after a hard exercise session if you are taking some kinds of diabetes medicine. If you are taking such treatments and you exercise late in the day, you should be particularly aware of hypoglycaemia during the night and eat an extra large carbohydrate based snack at bedtime. You may also need to eat extra foods rich in carbohydrate, such as pasta, the following day.

EMOTIONAL STRESS & DIABETES The link between diabetes and depression is well documented. Being diagnosed and living with diabetes can affect people in very different ways. While some may find coping with diabetes has very little impact on day-today life, others may find that it has turned their lives upside down.

Finding diabetes difficult to cope with does not mean that you are doing something wrong. Many people with diabetes who we speak to feel that at some point in their lives, their diabetes causes them to feel like they are not coping. Many feel alone. The physical impact of diabetes is well reported but the emotional impact is still not always recognised. Diabetes can have an emotional impact, especially around diagnosis, starting insulin, and on developing complications. Many people find their

own personal way to deal with these feelings, but for some they continue to struggle to come to terms with how their diabetes makes them feel. For some people with diabetes these feelings can develop into depression. Although people with diabetes have a higher chance of showing signs of depression, not all people with diabetes who are finding it challenging develop depression. If you are experiencing any stress or emotional anxiety please contact your local counsellor.

Saturday, 14th May was a wonderful occasion for the boys and girls who made their First Holy Communion at St Cronan’s Church in Brackenstown, Swords. The day was bathed in glorious sunshine, as pupils from Gaelscoil Bhriain Boroimhe, Swords Educate Together National School and Thornleigh Educate Together National School celebrated their big day. The ceremonies were performed by local priest, Fr Paul Thornton, who praised the children and spoke about the wonderful gift they received at the Sacrament. The children, their families and friends posed for photos after the ceremonies, which were attended by many teachers from the schools. There was praise for the efforts of teachers and parents, who contributed to making this day so special for the children. The beautiful ceremonies, which were both performed in the presence of a full church, were enhanced by the excellent singing of the school choir and the musical accompaniment, which was enjoyed by all present.

Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your broken heart where your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. C.F
