Kinsealy United’s Tenalty Shoot Out On Saturday 21st May, Kinsealy United held a sponsored 10 hour penalty shootout, aptly named the “Tenalty Shootout”, to raise funds for their club. The event took place in the car park of Feltrim Shopping Centre with the much appreciated support of the local Eurospar and Borza. Every team in the club took part, from Academy up to Under 13, and even the torrential downpours failed to quench their enthusiasm. Malahide United In Flying Form Malahide United youth are having a great end to their season at the moment with both the under 16s and the under 18s teams. Last week, the under 16 super DDSL side had a great win in Malahide Castle. It was a sad moment for the team though as they lost two players from their ‘Madrid Trio’. Team players and Spanish natives Javi and Jaime headed back to Spain last

week and left the pitch to a massive round of applause from the parents. Their team mates also gave them an excellent round of applause as they were subbed off. According to team management this is typical of a fantastic bunch of young men. They meet early before each match, stretch and warm up by themselves and no lip. The team still have 6 matches to play but

the loss of two of their three amigos will be felt. Meanwhile congratulations were in order for the under 18 Super DDSL side on finishing runners up in their first season together having only lost one league game. They topped the league from last September up until last week and were in contention to win up to the very end, but were pipped at the post by a great Kilnamanagh side. The lads also had a fantastic run in the All Ireland and were beaten 1-0 in the last 16 stage by the eventual finalists. It is a

fantastic achievement to finish where they have and it is all down to the dedication and work ethic from the coaching staff of John Dalton and Anto McKay and the professionalism and commitment from all of the 19 lads. According to management, they played some fantastic football, especially in Gannon, this season and are an absolute credit to John, Anto and Malahide United. They are an unbelievable bunch of young men and hopefully will all progress into the Senior 1st and 2nd teams next season.

The North County is proud to have such sporting prowess as a feather in our cap and wish the two young athletes well going forward in their athletic endeavours.

The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) – which represents organisations working with over 380,000 young people nationwide – is calling on young people aged 18 to 25 from throughout the North County to apply to become Ireland’s UN Youth Delegate for 2016/2017. The United Nations Youth Delegate Programme, coordinated in Ireland by the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, will see two young people join Ireland’s delegation to the United Nations in New York in September and October 2016 and February 2017. Speaking to the County Leader, Valerie Duffy of the NYCI explained: “We are looking for applicants from all around the country, so I would encourage young people from Dublin to apply for this amazing opportunity to represent Ireland at the highest international level, and to work on important issues including immigration and the new Sustainable Development Goals.” She concluded by saying; “Young people in Ireland have a vital role to play in shaping the Sustainable Development Goals, and they are part of the first generation that can end extreme poverty and fix climate change. If you, or a young person you know, think you have what it takes to be Ireland’s next UN Youth Ambassador you have until June 9th to apply.”

Saturday, 14th May was a wonderful occasion for the boys and girls who made their First Holy Communion at St Cronan’s Church in Brackenstown, Swords. The day was bathed in glorious sunshine, as pupils from Gaelscoil Bhriain Boroimhe, Swords Educate Together National School and Thornleigh Educate Together National School celebrated their big day. Such was the amount of children making their Communions, that there were two ceremonies on the day. The ceremonies were performed by local priest, Fr Paul Thornton, who praised the children and spoke about the wonderful gift they received at the Sacrament. The children, their families and friends posed for photos after the ceremonies, which were attended by many teachers from the schools. The beautiful ceremonies, which were both performed in the presence of a full church, were enhanced by the excellent singing of the school choir and the musical accompaniment.

Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune has been appointed to a 45-member Committee of Inquiry established by the European parliament that has been tasked with investigating the failings of the European Institutions in uncovering the Volkswagen scandal. Ms Clune has called on the company to compensate its Irish customers in the same way it has compensated its US customers. The MEP has called on the Irish Competition and C o n s u m e r Protection Commission to conclude their investigation into Volkswagen Ireland. Clune said; “The crux of the matter is this. Volkswagen cheated its customers. It must now make amends by agreeing to a package of compensatory measures for its Irish customers. VW customers in

the US are to receive compensation in the form of a mass buyback of affected cars, as well as compensation and committing funds to promote green automotive technology”. The MEP continued “I am calling on Volkswagen Ireland to begin engaging with its Irish customers as to a similar scheme of compensation immediately . Volkswagen’s offer thus far has fallen short of what is expected from a responsible manufacturer. Their inaction in Europe is an affront to their loyal customers”. sees the Presidency move from By Cathal Boland the Dutch on July 1st to this small eastern European member. Slovakia is a young country just 23 years since its establishment and twelve years since it joined the EU. As a country it has difficulty with some of the direction of the Union. The Presidency will present challenges as the country must act above its own immediate national interest. But perhaps the fact that it starts with a different perspective will allow it to find solutions to challenges others see only in a one dimensional way. This is an important moment in the evolution of political life of this country. I’m sure many will remember the great pride here in Ireland when we first held the Presidency of the Union.

Bronze up for Summer Few of us can dare to go bear, but for people with acne or oily skin, the sun can wreak havoc with heavy make-up, actually making breakouts worse. Sun exposure causes the sebaceous gland to produce excess oil, so when make-up is applied it causes the pores to be blocked resulting in breakouts. With skin-loving mineral based ingredients, Youngblood Mineral Radiance Bronzer delivers an effortless sun-kissed look while allowing the skin to breathe. Its’ lightweight, micronised powder is non-comodogenic too and colour-matched to the skin’s natural tones for a natural,

healthy blush which won’t block pores, delivering a smooth, even-looking finish. Youngblood Mineral Radiance Bronzer also contains light-reflecting properties and Rice Starch for long-lasting wear that stays put throughout the day. Available in four lightinfused shades, each is housed in a sleek mirrored compact. Youngblood Mineral Radiance Bronzer can be used on the face and body with a range of warm colours giving a gorgeous glow.

Swords School Wins Award Fingal Community College was one of only five schools throughout the country to be awarded a prestigious ‘21st Century School of Distinction’ Award by Trinity College’s Trinity Access 21 Programme at a ceremony held in Google last week. Fingal Community College was supported by the Trinity Access 21 (TA21) Programme which aims to effect change in the Irish education system by preparing teachers to teach Computer Science (CS) and related topics using 21st century teaching methods, in particular team-based and

collaborative learning in the classroom. The ’21st Century School of Distinction’ award recognises and showcases the hard work that schools nationwide are undertaking to transform their schools, develop strong college-going cultures, engage with the community to support educational uplift and promote innovative approaches to teaching and learning, including in the areas of CS and STEM. The Award was presented to Fingal Community College by Professor Paul Reville, from Harvard University’s Graduate

School of Education and Director of Harvard’s Education Redesign Lab. Speaking to the County Leader, Cliona Hannon, Director of the Trinity Access Programmes said; “There is a great desire among teachers to bring Computer Science and STEM subjects into the classroom, but many face barriers such as a lack of resources, training and a rigid school timetable that does not facilitate the collaborative approach to learning. It is extraordinary to see the scale of enthusiasm, commitment to change and innovation

happening in schools like Fingal Community College and it gives tremendous hope that we will see an increase in progression to post-secondary education as well as an increase in digital skills among our young people that will help ensure their success in the digital age.” Also speaking to the County Leader, Fionnuala Meehan, Managing Director, EMEA SMB

While the hotel caters for all events, a core part of the business is in hosting conferences and corporate functions. As business steadily grows, these conference facilities are normally in full use most days. Some of the features include, complimentary super highspeed Wi-Fi, air conditioning, stationery, LCD projector and screen, fully integrated AV technology to name but a few. “Additionally the hotel boasts a Rooftop

car parking space, with ease of access to the airport, the M1 and M50 motorways. The courtesy 24 hour shuttle service to the airport is hugely popular with guests and clients who need to get to their flight in comfort and on time. This service runs every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour, and is a contributing factor to the popularity of the hotel for people who need to stay close to the airport for that all important early flight. Value for money, customer satisfaction and ensuring that clients experience the friendliness and full support of staff during their stay at the Carlton Hotel Dublin Airport is front and centre of the hotel’s policy. Declan said, “This is to the forefront of our business aims and we strive to ensure that anyone who uses our facilities enjoys the experience and will come back to us and recommend our services.” The continued success of the hotel over the past 10 years is a testament to the professionalism of Declan and his excellent team, as they look forward to the next 10 years providing for the hospitality needs of people from near and far.

The lovely ceremony was conducted by Bishop Ray Field, who was ably assisted by local Parish Priest, Fr Eugene Taaffe and by Fr, Chris Derham. The ceremony was embellished by the beautiful singing of the choir, who provided the music and they performed excellent singing. Bishop Field thanked the parents, teachers and Parish Council for the great work they put in, ensuring that everything went like clockwork. He also thanked the teachers for preparing the children for this unforgettable day in their lives. The children then posed for photographs in the beautiful warm sunshine, with their families and friends, before heading off to enjoy this momentous day.

This is why they are so happy with their new clinic, or rather, their old clinic refurbished, in Balbriggan. Three weeks ago they opened their doors to the public again in number 10 Clonard Street and are delighted with how it has turned out. According to Hayes: “This was our original premises, and it took four months to complete. We opened to the public three weeks ago with two new treatment rooms.” On of the key things about how Hayes and Associates run their appointment schedules is that they try to offer their patients an appointment within 48 hours where at all possible. They also give patients their

The importance of local and trustworthy medical practitioners is often keenly felt in areas that are outside of major city centres. It is of particular importance when it comes to problems with the feet that there is a reputable establishment on hand to treat your ailments, and that it is within close proximity to where you live. This is where Hayes and Associates come in. Hayes and Associates are a group of Podiatry Foot Clinics that were established by Donal Hayes in Balbriggan in 1989. Due to their reputation and dedication the last 20 years has seen them establish further clinics in Skerries and Drogheda, with practices also having been established in Clondalkin, Inchicore and Collins Avenue. Their standard in quality care stems from the fact that all their Podiatrists are trained to the highest standard, with each of them being ‘Bachelor of Science’ degree holders in Podiatric Medicine. They are also committed to continuous professional development with all practitioners undergoing courses in the latest developments in Podiatric Medicare. They have eight practitioners working across all six of their clinics. Balbriggan and Drogheda clinics are open six days a week, opening from 9 am to 6pm Monday to Friday and from 9 am to 1pm on

Saturdays and Skerries is open two days per week, Monday’s and Wednesday’s with a view to extending opening days in the future. Their Podiatrists deal with a wide scope of problems, treating everything from corns and callous’ to more complicated issues such as biomechanical conditions, and issues with gait, which is the process of walking. Speaking on this Hayes said; “We deal with many issues from the mundane to the more specialised things like biomechanics which is the study of peoples gait. This is the way in which people walk. Problems with

gait can mean that people need to get corrective insoles or specialised shoes. We also treat sports people and we would treat a lot of the elderly. We aim to keep them mobile and keep them comfortable. So

At Hayes and Associates they supply a range of surgical footwear that would accommodate most foot conditions and some of the foot wear that they stock can be adapted to accommodate foot deformities. Some of the brands they stock include: PPL Biomechanics, New Feet Medical Footwear and Alviflex. Hayes and Associates also specialise in podopaediatrics which is the area of podiatry that focusses on the treatment of children and the various afflictions that can affect a young persons lower limbs. Proper podopaediatrics care is important in the long term

because unaddressed structural problems with the feet can worsen over time, eventually causing severe issues with gait and lead to pain and complications. They will also deal with the many issues that arise in women during pregnancy with their feet due to the natural weight gain during pregnancy and fluid retention. All of which are very common amongst pregnant women. Hayes and Associates have a very comprehensive website www.hayesandassociates.ie that breaks down everything they do in great detail and gives many useful tips and advise on many foot conditions.

it’s a big wide scope of practice that we cover.” Getting a gait analysis can be very important as problems with your gait can lead to a myriad of other complica-

treat a variety of other foot conditions. They will treat your skin and nail conditions such as ingrown Toenails, verrucae, and fungal infections. Anyone who has ever experienced any of these problems knows just how painful and troublesome they can be. Many of these problems can be debilitating if they are not dealt with. Getting to a trustworthy podiatrist can be vital in severe instances of these conditions. There are many other conditions that they will address also and they are experts in conditions such as arch pain, arch strain, arthritis, bunions, calluses, claw toes, hammer toes, heel pain, plantar fasciitis, heel fissures, mortons neuroma, achilles tendonitis and a huge range of other foot conditions that they can treat or advise on, or if necessary, make the appropriate referral. They also deal with high risk conditions such as diabetes. People with diabetes have an increased risk of ulcers and damage to the feet. Both type 1 and Type 2 diabetes cause damage to blood vessels and peripheral nerves that can result in problems in the legs and feet. Two main conditions, Peripheral Artery Disease and Peripheral Neuropathy are responsible for the increased risk of foot problems in people with diabetes. According to Hayes: “Diabetes is a massive problem and we get a huge number of patients suffering from this disease. They can develop neuropathy, a condition where they lose sensation in their feet. This condition, where there is no pain, is quite alarming, as pain is an indicator that something is wrong and needs attention.” At Hayes and Associates they are conscious that not everyone can afford the kind of care they provide despite, in many cases, it being an essential element of care. That is why they treat both medical card holders and private patients. Medical card patients can apply for what is called a chiropody card. This card may not cover all

choice of practitioner. While they are more than happy to treat existing conditions, a lot of what they try to do revolves around encouraging people to take preventative measures when it comes to their foot problems. They encourage their patients to make regular visits to them, and learn about the importance of wearing proper foot wear. Wearing the wrong kind of shoes can lead to many complications such as athletes foot, bunions, corns and ingrown toenails.

The most awaited season is here once again. It’s always refreshing to see the sun shine through the windows so early in the morning, clothes hung out to dry in the garden, and flowers blossoming in the garden. The hours are longer, and the days are warmer. Now may be the perfect time to get started on that summer project you’ve put off because the days were shorter and colder. Here’s the time to redecorate your house, or change the design of your garden. You may be in the mood for some major reconstruction, or possibly just want to make the house more

summer friendly. Whatever you’re thinking of, County Leader have gathered some tips to hopefully inspire you to get started. It is possible to change the look of your home on the outside and inside, on just a small budget. Businesses in the North County have some great summer offers on to give you the best bargain, and improve your summer home on a small budget. As the summer’s here, there’s no longer a need for drab colours and heavy materials. Here is a season where your surroundings should be light and breezy to reflect the

summer. A popular tip is to replace those heavy winter curtains for lighter, thinner ones. Embrace the sun, it’s not everyday we have it. In fact, we most probably spend a third of the year in the dark and cold, a little morning sunshine and late nights can’t harm us. Summer’s all about the light colours, and allowing more light into the house will bring summer indoors too. Not only this, but it will also make your rooms appear larger and more spacious. Appearing to have more spacious reflects the outdoor air and breeze, preparing you for the summer.

Franny Sweet is the sleep that ends all pain We would not wake you to suffer again God took your hand, we had to part It eased your pain but it broke our hearts. You came one Sunday morning You gently touched his face You told him up in heaven Franny For you I have a place So enjoy your time in Heaven Franny You’ve earned your eternal rest For when you were upon this earth You were the very best. All you who have a brother Love him as you may Because we wish with all our hearts That Franny was here today Nothing more that we can say Missing you more with each passing day.

Death breaks an earthly tie, But love survives when grief has passed For love can never die, We hold you close within our hearts, And there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again. Never forgotten, always sadly missed by your loving wife
