‘Ball In Play’ For Athletico Malahide separated, so we wanted to set something up that was more

After a tough year of studying for the Leaving Cert, and having to give up his favourite sport, an intrepid young Malahide lad took it upon himself to set up his own football club rather than rejoin Malahide United FC. Cian Russell, 19, and some of his friends set up ‘Athletico Malahide’. “If we had re-joined Malahide to start playing again, we would have been

Cian’s mother works for Malahide United, so was in a position to tell him everything he needed to know about setting up a club. “The first thing I did was, I went about getting insurance and asking the Council for a pitch.”

The enterprising young lad approached the local authority and secured permission for his team to play in Malahide Castle grounds. He then took to WhatsApp and began a group text encouraging his friends to join; “A lot of people thought it would never happen, so a lot of them weren’t really bothered by it but a few stuck by it and thought ‘yea we will give it a go’.” Having everything else

We were put in division 3A.” All of the money needed was raised by themselves without any fundraising initially. However, recently they had a fund-raising night which was a huge success. They had a quiz night in early January in their local GAA club and raised over €2,500. Uninterested in becoming rivals to Malahide United or any other club, the lads are happy enough to keep it small, with just the one team. The people of Malahide seem to be proud of them, as are their parents. It’s all very impressive. But it doesn’t stop him from being humble. Mysterious And Ooky In Malahide School The Transition Year students of Malahide Community School put on a musical every year as part of the transition year curriculum. Eighty students participate on stage with more getting involved in the other aspects of the show such as set design, backstage, make-up etc. This year’s show took place from January 26th – 29th. It was the school’s 26th Transition Year musical. The Addams Family is a Musical Comedy with words and music written by Andrew Lippa. It is based on the macabre characters created by Charles Addams made famous in the TV series and later in the movies The Addams Family and Addams Family Values. The central character in the story is Gomez, who was played by James Clegg, the father in this rather unusual family. He is caught between his loyalty to his adored wife Morticia, played by

CIara McKenna, and the request to keep from her a secret. This request is made by his daughter Wednesday, played by

Mighty Malahide Nearly There Malahide Rugby Club senior first team travelled to North Kildare last week for a top of the table Leinster League Division 1B clash. Malahide held a five point lead over their opponents going into the game and a victory for the team would all but guarantee them promotion to the top flight of Leinster Junior rugby for the first time in the club’s history. Malahide started well and were in front inside five minutes when Darren Morrin

Malahide were again first on the board in the second half with a Niall Myron try 15 minutes in and they sealed the deal with a Mike Badenhorst try 10 minutes from time. Brendan Carpenter’s conversion gave them a 22-0 lead. North Kildare kept working and were rewarded with a late consolation try to leave the final score at 22-5. The result sees Malahide just needing one point from their final two games to guarantee the League title and promotion to Division 1A.

Potential Gael Colaiste For Malahide Back in November the Department of Education announced that there was to be a new secondary school opening for the Malahide / Portmarnock area. The plan as it stands is for it to be ready for opening in 2017. Daire Ni Laoi, local councillor for Sinn Fein has been campaigning to see the school open as a Gael Colaiste. Speaking to the County Leader she said; “With the growth in numbers of Gaelscoileanna across the country and particularly in the North County, there has been increased interest in the

Swords Toastmasters held an Open Evening at the Carnegie Court Hotel, Swords on Monday last. The event attracted a good gathering of established members, as well as some prospective members. Swords Toastmasters is now in its 21st year, having been established in 1995 and has 33 members at present. There is an international element to Toastmasters, which is a worldwide organisation. Indeed, the founder of Swords Toastmasters, Ted Corcoran was International President of Toastmasters from 2003-2004 and he was present at Monday’s meeting. Swords Toastmasters President, Alec MacAlister said that, “Toastmasters provides an essential service to people who may be self conscious about speaking in public, like weddings, presentations and other events, where their confidence levels are boosted. There is no reason to be fearful of public speaking anymore,” he said. Toastmasters also provides mentoring, where everyone helps everyone else. Swords Toastmasters meet every second Monday at the Carnegie Court Hotel and they welcome all newcomers.

The only problem with this indulgence for Malahide residents and other residents in the wider North County area is that there are no designated dog parks in the region. The nearest one to us is St Annes Park in Raheny. One councillor that is trying to change this is Fianna Fail councillor Eoghan O’Brien. He has been pushing the council to designate an area in Malahide Demesne where dog walkers can let their pets off leash. Cllr O’Brien told the County Leader that; “A

What is happening though, is that people are either unaware of these rules or are flouting them and there is an issue around dogs being allowed off leash within the demesne. This plan would tackle and counteract that. O’Brien said that; “It takes away any excuse for people walking dogs in other areas of the park to not have their dogs on a leash. I think it would strike a good balance as I know that there are issues with people who use the parks that don’t have dogs. Sometimes they can have an issue with dogs being off leash and so on, so I think this is a perfect solution to this.” This is an issue that is very pertinent to Malahide residents with requests coming in to council members and discussions happening on social media surrounding it. With regards to where it will be located within the demesne O’Brien said that; “It would have to be a suitable area and agreeable between the councillors and the council officials.” It looks as though the regulars to Malahide Castle area are soon set to be able to enjoy those all important frolics with man’s best friend.

Management Fees On The Way Out For Many Homeowners Continued from page 1 of apartments and houses won’t have to participate in management companies nor will they therefore have to pay management fees.” Redmond pointed out that there were certain instances where fees may still be required saying; “Apartments with lifts and common areas obviously have a need to fund the maintenance of them, but owners of houses in those developments do not and its been unfair to ask them to pay for that.” At a time when everyone is landing back on their feet after a tough few years of austerity measures and recession, this is a hugely welcome development for the local area. This also means that it will fall to the Council to maintain the public areas surrounding such properties from now on. The County Council told us that; “The Chief Executive’s recommendation, which was agreed at the meeting, was to prepare a policy for the taking in charge of residential developments within two year’s of the making of this Development Plan” a representative of the Council said. Estate agents in the area say that this is an innovative idea, and one guaranteed to attract many new home owners to the locality.

Elaine McCann, Home School Community Liason at Balbriggan Educate Together National School told the County Leader, “This event promotes literacy and creates links between the schools. A book is chosen and this year’s book choice is ‘The Guns of Easter’, a 1916 book by Gerard Whelan. It will be studied in class and is also encouraged at home, so there will be parental involvement. Different events will be held at the four schools, including an Art event at B a l b r i g g a n Community College,

Parking In Estates Needs To Be Sorted - Sinnott Cllr Justin Sinnott (NP) is concerned that parking of vehicles will become a serious issue for residents in Swords with the advent of Metro North. He told the County Leader, “I have submitted a few motions in relation to parking problems that are likely to happen. We have found that at Dart and Railway stations, people just park cars in residential areas. These vehicles are abandoned for the whole day, thus leading to stress for residents, who find their estates clogged up with cars. Cllr. Sinnott When Metro North is delivered, it will become a real issue, particularly for estates that are near the town centre. These are the ones that are likely to be targeted for parking,” he said. “While we all want Metro North to be delivered, I am calling for a traffic management plan to be put in place because Swords is getting bigger and with that comes parking consequences.” Sinnott agreed with Darragh Butler (FF) who is advocating that the terminus for Metro North should be moved from Estuary to the original Lissenhall site, where a Park and Ride facility is proposed by Butler, which is expected to ease the parking problem. “There needs to be a balance here, where a Park and Ride, with a reasonable daily charge for parking here would mean people would use it. We need to make sure that costs are kept reasonable to ensure the success of any Park and Ride facility that comes to pass,” concluded Sinnott.

Figures released this week by TASC show that the number of children aged 0-6yrs suffering from deprivation has doubled, leaving Ireland with the third highest deprivation rate for this age group in the EU. Commenting on these figures local candidate for Sinn Fein Louise O’Reilly said: “With 1000 children under eight years in emergency accommodation and deprivation rates rising, it is clear that this government has failed children.” She went on to give damning indictment of the current Government’s failure to children by saying that; “The Government has had five years to improve the lot of families and it has failed.” Sinn Féin launched their Childcare Policy last week and are prioritising children who are at the heart of this document. In it they have a detailed, costed plan to reduce childcare costs to a maximum of €180 per week which will see investment in childcare workers’ education. O’Reilly concluded by saying; “On the centenary year of the Rising it’s shameful to see that this government has failed to cherish our children equally.”

Newman Clarifies Voting Error TY students pictured: Finbar Harford, Andrea Carey, Claudia Joyce, Emmet Butterly

Local councillor, Joe Newman (NP) is eager to put the record straight regarding a vote taken a recent council meeting regarding Dublin airport. Newman cast his vote in error and is anxious to let it be known that he is, and always has been, a supporter of the airport and the vital jobs that are created through its continued growth. Newman explained to the County Leader how this voting mishap came about. Cllr. Newman He said, “Last Friday, 22nd January, late at night after a long day attending to council matters, a motion came up regarding the airport. I misinterpreted the motion and voted for it. When I discovered my error and tried to correct the record, it had already been logged. “I sought clarification, but the vote proceeded without the clarification. It was at the end of a very long day and we were all tired. This added a little pressure with my incorrect decision to vote for the motion. I should have demanded clarification of the motion,” said Newman. In an effort to reassure people, he said, “I am an avid supporter of the airport and I am on record as fully supporting the economic development of Dublin airport, which includes the addition of the second runway, which will bring much needed jobs. I have made my support in this respect very clear in recent meetings regarding motions debated in the council,” he concluded. In the end, the motion was defeated.

something I personally have an issue with. It is clearly a sub-standard build and somehow because people are homeless its seen as ‘good enough’. I have worked in homeless services in Dublin for over 11 years and I was always of the philosophy that homeless people should be treated with the utmost dignity and respect and that they should be offered the very best of services and accommodation. We need a new way to do social housing that is based on the highest standards and best planned developments possible,” he concluded. We contacted the County Council for their reaction and a spokesperson said, “There are a growing number of Fingal families with dependent children accommodated in emergency accommodation. The aim of modular housing is to ease the pressure for families currently residing in hotels and other emergency accommodation while supply is coming on stream,” the statement concluded.

Brush Up Your Hygiene Routine We brush our teeth, wash our face and shower daily, but when was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? An Organic Surge Of Goodness For Your Skin Skincare just doesn’t get purer, kinder or better than Organic Surge Daily Skincare Range. Organ Surge’s natural promise is to create products that are packed full of natural and organic ingredients, that blend natural hydrators, antioxidants and essential oils to deliver radiant sensational skin, naturally – all at amazing purse friendly prices.

I see that the EU is considering a review of VAT rates across all member States. This could see the zero rate abolished. Revenue currently apply the Zero Rate to certain food, drink, clothing and footwear appropriate to children under the age of eleven. EU Economics Commissioner, Pierre Moscovici says that no decision has been made but that “zero rate is not the best idea”,” He indicated that the commission will reassess rates as applied across the EU. As we are in the run into the General Election with so much talk of instability, some might be asking is this really a rerun of the 1980s when VAT on children’s shoes brought

down the then Fine Gael/Labour government. The concept of tax at the point of sale, then called Turnover Tax was introduced in the mid-sixties by a Fianna Fail minority Government which relied on the votes of Independent deputies. Over the following years the tax was restructured as VAT as we know it today. The application of the zero rate was one of the ten point plan which saw Fine Gael and Labour oust Fianna Fail from their then sixteen years of power in 1973. Their promise was VAT free food, a promise they delivered on by introducing the zero rate across a range of items. So now that the EU has

By Cathal Boland decided to have a go at the scrapping of the zero rate. Will any of the political contenders of today commit to defending the zero rate as enthusiastically as defending the 12.5 per cent corporation tax rate. Is it any wonder that Britain complains of over regulation in domestic decisions? Former Fine Gael minister and current Agriculture Commissioner, Phil Hogan says that, “Since taking up office in November 2014, eight out of 11 high level appointments — at director and head-of-unit level — have gone to female candidates.” This is a first within the corridors of power in the EU. So Big Phil is really ahead of the game this time.

Young Voters Urged To Register In Time The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is encouraging young people in the North County to make sure they are registered to vote, given that a General Election is just weeks away. If the election is held at the end of February, as widely expected, the deadline for inclusion on the supplementary register could be as early as the 8th February. James Doorley, NYCI deputy director

explained: “We are especially anxious to ensure that the 3248 young people who have turned 18 in the last 12 months in the whole county, many of them from this constituency, are included in the electoral register and can exercise their democratic right.” Any young person who is 18 years of age on or before the date of the election is eligible to vote. If they are not currently registered,

they can do so by downloading and filling in the RFA2 form at www.checktheregister.ie. This form must be stamped at a Garda Station and returned to the local authority before close of business on the registration deadline. Likewise, if a young person wishes to change their registration address, they need to complete an RFA3 form, get it stamped and return it to the local authority

by the deadline which will be known once the election date is announced. “For almost every election we get calls from young people who have missed the registration deadline and are disappointed that they cannot vote, we urge young people to make sure they are registered and not to leave it to the last minute, so that they can vote in the upcoming General Election,” he concluded.

Lobbying Continuing Unregistered Says O’Brien Following the publication of Transparency International, Ireland’s Corruption Perceptions Index last week which saw Ireland drop a place, Green Party General Election candidate Joe O’Brien has identified lobbyists and Fingal County Council has having a lot of work to do in terms of building a transparent democracy. In speaking to the County Leader he said that; “This week alone has shown me that there is Joe O’Brien a lot of work to be done to make government in Ireland more transparent. Government is still too precious and afraid to release what is public information and lobbyists clearly don’t understand or prefer to ignore their legal obligations towards the new lobbying register. In Ireland now the public is legally entitled to know who is lobbying whom after the introduction of the Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015. However it is clear that there needs to be some serious political will to actually change the culture of secret lobbying and cronyism in Ireland. ” He went on to say that; “If you are an employer, a representative or advocacy body, a professional lobbyist or an individual communicating about development or rezoning of land, you need to check and register your lobbying activity. I checked the lobbying register for lobbying of Fingal County Council up to the deadline for returns last week and there were only 55 entries for the last four months of 2015. The reality I am sure is that Fingal County Council was lobbied many more times than this on a variety of issues that we will probably never know about.” He concluded by stating that; “If elected I commit to being a TD that will shed light on the dark corners of government at a local and national level. Things will not improve just because we want them to, we have to elect people that have a genuine interest in making government more transparent and exposing corruption.”

Dublin Says ‘Bonjour’ In Montpellier

Gilles Fougeron, Premier Travel; Bernadette O'Carroll, Irish Welcome Tours; Serge Fonseca, Tourism Ireland; Anais Leboeuf, Quartier Libre; Fanny Edom, Voyages Internationaux; Alessio Monterosso, Aer Lingus; and Mathieu Brydniak, Montpellier Airport are pictured at the Ireland workshop in Montpellier.

A number of Irish and French tourism companies travelled to Montpellier last week, to meet and do business with some 40 French travel agents based in and around the southern French city. The workshop was organised by Tourism Ireland, in conjunction with Aer Lingus and Montpellier Airport, to celebrate and launch the new Aer Lingus flight between Montpellier and Dublin – due to commence on 20 May – and to grow tourist numbers from this part of France. As well as emphasising ease of access between Montpellier and the island of Ireland, the event was also an excellent opportunity for Tourism Ireland to highlight the Wild Atlantic Way, the Causeway Coastal Route and The Gobbins Cliff Path, Ireland’s Ancient East and Dublin. The French

travel agents also took part in a quiz – answering questions all about Ireland to be in with a chance to win Aer Lingus flights to Dublin. Elmagh Killeen, Tourism Ireland’s Manager for southern Europe, said: “We are delighted that so many of the influential travel agents in this part of France took the time to come and hear about our wonderful tourism offering and the many things to see and do on a holiday on the island of Ireland. 2015 was the best year ever for French visitors to Ireland, with the most recent CSO figures showing an increase of +20% for September to November. Tourism Ireland will roll out an extensive programme of promotional activity throughout 2016 – to keep the momentum going and build on that growth.”

Dogs Trust Numbers At Critical Levels Since the start of the year Dogs Trust, received an alarming number of queries from members of the public wishing to surrender their dog to the charity. These are by far the most common calls to the centre. the charity has received in excess of 260 phone calls to date this January. During the second week in January alone Dogs Trust took in as many stray and unwanted dogs as resources allowed, including 3 abandoned and unwanted mums. one of which, bella, a heavily pregnant shih tzu, was surrendered by her owner on the 9th January because her puppies were not born on time for the Christmas market. Mark Beazley, executive director, Dogs Trust commented; “we are deeply saddened to see pregnant and recently whelped dogs being callously discarded when the christmas market has ceased. we are still seeing unscrupulous breeders trying to cash in on the demand for ‘Christmas present puppies’ resulting in a high volume of unwanted puppies in the new year.” Before Christmas, the County Leader reported on the efforts of dogs trust in trying to minimise the amount of puppies that might be abandoned over the

Christmas period when they ran their ‘make the puppy promise’ appeal. while a worthy appeal, it seams that there were still plenty of people out there who didn’t heed the warning of the organisation. many people getting animals and having now knowledge of how to look after and care for them

once the initial cute factor has worn away. He went on to tell us there not only are there adult dogs abandoned to them, but there are also some puppies as well; “we have also had puppies, ‘snape’ an 8 week old chihuahua and ‘rex’, an 11 week old collie, both were bought as Christmas

presents and surrendered into us this January by their new owners as they were unwanted.” because of the high numbers of surrendered dogs and puppies the charity has had to take in, they have been unable to offer places to pound dogs which are most at risk.

Success For Malahide Under 15’s It was great news last week for Malahide United FC when they won their game in KIlkenny against the Kilkenny Freebooters. The triumph means that they are now through to the last 16 of the SFAI All Ireland Cup. Here at the County Leader we spoke to team manager Davy McGrady to tell us about the match. “It was a tight game. The first half saw a slightly lacklustre performance, however it was down to keeper Sean Bohan’s super save that he pulled off in the first half in our favour.” He told us that the second half was better. saying that; “ In the
