Skerries and Malahide were the North County’s big winners in the 2010 Tidy Towns as both picked up Gold medals in their population categories.

By Bob McKenzie & Rob O’Hanrahan Skerries was a big winner on the day also scooping the regional title and was the North County’s best, just pipping Malahide to this award, as well as being Highly Commended for their renewable energy plans. Just seven points short of overall victory, Skerries is, yet again, the yardstick for the area. Lusk was highly commended in the County Award category, while St Patrick’s Boys School in Donabate got a special award coming first in the Dublin area. Balscadden got an endeavour Award of €500 after improving their score by six per cent. So impressive was Skerries’ challenge, it was congratulated in its individual report as “one of the best entries that this adjudicator has seen”. Speaking to the County Leader, Anne Doyle, of the

Skerries Committee, spoke of the “great but difficult place” that Skerries now finds itself in. “To be seven points off the overall winner is magnificent for the town, and to continue winning the regional prize is great. But we now need to push on and break into the top circle; it’s so tight up there that one or two points would change the competition completely”. Gerry Rafferty of Malahide Tidy Towns committee was equally upbeat about the results. He said, “We are delighted to have retained our gold medal status, which we have won every year since 2002. We congratulate Skerries on winning the regional award. They have a great hard working committee. We put in our own committee this year and linked up with Malahide Forum. We were supported by other interested parties and the Chamber and we have a five year plan in place. It is very inspiring to see the hard work put in by towns and villages throughout the country,” he said. Continued on page 13

Overgrown Trees Cause Concern In Swords Estate Overgrown trees in a Swords housing estate are causing concern among local residents, who fear that these trees give cover to people with less than noble intentions. Residents of Abbeylea estate are deeply concerned at the number of break-ins and robberies which have taken place in the estate over the past year or so, and believe that the condition of the trees has assisted the perpetrators. Local senator, Brendan Ryan (LAB), told the County Leader, “I’ve called on the County Council to cut back or replace existing mature trees at specific locations, within the estate.” He continued, “Many residents, including elderly residents, are living in fear and confined to their homes in the evenings as a result of the robberies. Part of the problem is the overgrown nature of the trees which are shading some of the houses and the public street lighting within the estate. People with ulterior motives love these conditions, with the cover of darkness to operate in. The location and the condition of the trees need to be addressed by the local authority. Residents are entitled to live in their homes without fear, and be entitled to expect both the council and the Gardaí to support them in all practical ways. “I have written to the local authority and the Garda Superintendent, requesting an urgent meeting with both parties, with a view to assisting the residents in alleviating their fears, and improving their quality of life,” he concluded.

Pay And Display Parking Set For Bridgefield The demand for parking in the Malahide area is high and in order to address the growing parking pressures in the area, it is proposed to introduce Pay and Display in the existing Bridgefield Car Park on the Dublin Road. A report relating to the proposed introduction of the Pay and Display system says, “Pay and Display discourages long stay parking and encourages turn over of parking spaces which enables people to access businesses and shopping facilities in

the town.” The income generated will support the running costs of the upgraded Malahide Castle and Gardens Development Project. This Project will deliver an international flagship heritage and tourism destination in the North County and will attract significant numbers of new visitors to the County. Failte Ireland has endorsed the Project and has committed €3.75million towards the overall funding and will deliver economic and social benefits to the

Rush Residents Make Their Feelings Known On Eirgrid By Liam Keegan Last Sunday week, September 12th, saw thousands of Rush residents take part in the protest against Eirgrid’s plans to run two electricity pipelines through the centre of the town. Around 3,000 protestors gathered at the Millbank Theatre to begin a peaceful protest march along Eirgrid’s proposed cable line through the town. The East-West Interconnector pipeline, which will connect Ireland to Britain’s electricity grid, has already been granted planning permission by An Bord Pleanála. Rush Community Council Chairperson, Anne Mc Crudden said that the thousands attending the protest made the community’s stance on the issue very clear. “There are around 3,000 houses in Rush, so every home in the town was represented at the march”, she said. Eirgrid have already had their proposal rejected in neighbouring towns, Lusk and Donabate, and the community hope to make Rush a third inaccessible area for the power cables. “The community’s request is very clear, they want this re-routed and we will keep going until this happens”, she added. Protestors, young and old, could be heard chanting “down with Eirgrid” and “re-route, re-route”, as they marched their way through the town supported by

region which will create significant employment during construction and when complete. Income from the Bridgefield Car Park will be ringfenced to support the running costs of the upgraded Malahide Castle and Gardens, including loan repayments, and such income will be fundamental to ensuring the financial viability of the development. The local Chamber is in favour a pay system. It would mean that there would be a greater availability of spaces for customers of businesses in the town. Creating a pay system should also allow for earlier opening times as the issue of

DART parking would be negated. Chamber president, Al Ryan said, “We did also say that we were not in favour of expanding the car park unless an accommodation was reached with our GAA Club and we continue to hold that view. This proposal does not involve any expansion of the existing car park. Of course, the downside will be that those who have previously used this car park for free will now have to pay. Potentially this could cause other issues as drivers seek out alternative locations for free parking in the area,” he concluded.

the sounds of St Maurs Pipe Band. Along with Mc Crudden, TD’s from all parties were in attendance, including Fine Gael deputy leader, James Reilly, Michael Kennedy (FF), and Trevor Sargent (GP). Also present were Senator Brendan Ryan, Cllr Clare Daly, Cllr. Ken Farrell and Cllr Tom O’Leary, who said that the Government needs to act as they have “the responsibility and power to persuade Eirgrid to alter the route.” Local residents voiced their concerns surrounding the safety of the pipeline at a public meeting before the protest, and the Department of Energy recently issued a report advising that such cables should “avoid population centres”.

However, Eirgrid responded by saying that “We would not be developing this interconnector if there were any health risks to anyone along the route”. Eirgrid’s project document also said that it will make a contribution of €100,000 to the County Council, of which 90 per cent had been “ring-fenced for Rush”.

New Nursing Home In Pipeline For Swords The County Council are considering plans for a development which would consist of a nursing home and a primary care unit on land previously granted planning permission for residential use. The site, at the junction of Bridge and Church Streets in Swords was originally set to be a two block development incorporating apartments, offices and an underground 100 bay car park accessed from Bridge Street. The Council has requested a raft of further details from

the developers as they consider the plans with the original designs being binned in favour of something a bit more palatable to local residents. A 65 bed Nursing home is to anchor the development with a roof garden incorporated into the design. The Primary care unit will comprise of 13 consulting rooms and is expected to take up two floors with two retail units, a pharmacy and a restaurant incorporated alongside commercial offices which will occupy the top floor. New Facility Finally Opens In Portrane The long awaited opening of the Knockamann Units at Portrane took place last Friday, September 17th. The initial residency will be 18 clients with the entire unit to be fully operational within three months. The delay has mainly been blamed on the HSE’s hiring freeze as the unit sat idle. Initially, five nurses will be on staff rising to 35 by mid October. Thirteen of the new staff will be newly qualified nurses who will graduate in the next few weeks. Garda clearance is also holding up appointments to the staff who will look after 60 clients when the facility is up and running. Deputy James Reilly (FG) has welcomed the confirmation from Minister Moloney, that the new units at Knockamann, Portrane are finally opened. “This will be warmly welcomed by the residents of this fine facility and their families who have loobied and waited patiently for this development to open,” said Reilly.

and members of the club, who ran games such as penalty shootouts, bouncy castle slides, the wheel of fortune, and music was also provided by manager and DJ, Martin Daly. Director of Lusk Utd Academy, Hugh O’Malley was extremely pleased with how the Fun Day was going. He told the County Leader, “We had around 250 kids here last year and it’s looking good again this year,” he said, “we organise golf classics but it’s vital that we get the kids involved with the club too.” One of the highlights of the day was the singing competition, Lusk’s Got Talent, which invited kids and grown-ups alike up to the stage to show off their vocal abilities. The eventual winner was six year old, Sophie Gibbons, who performed a wonderful rendition of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’. O’Malley said that it was important in a growing town like Lusk to host Fun Days as to invite new members to the club every year. “This day is not only a fundraiser for the club, but its aim is to also get in new players and new coaches too; we need to show the town that we’re here,” he concluded.

New iPhone App Is A Major Breakthrough A new application for the iPhone, called, ‘TalkforMe’, has been developed by a mobile phone shop owner which gives those with speech difficulties a customised tool to help get their voices be heard. ‘TalkforMe’ was developed

By Patrick Finnegan by TalkToMe mobile phone shops founder, Hugh McEvoy after his son, Karl, found speech was becoming more difficult following a childhood diagnosis of dystonia. Hugh, who is well known in Swords, has had a mobile phone outlet on the Main Street for almost 20 years, developed the App for Karl, 21 who has had the rare disability since he was four years old. This speech defect got worse between the ages of four and 12, with the result that Karl’s speech is difficult to understand. ‘TalkforMe’ is a multipurpose communication tool that allows people communicate their needs by using images that they take with their iPhone and sentences that they type in which are then spoken in over 30 languages. The App can be completely customised to the needs of the individual and can be set up to contain relevant user identified groups of pictures and sentences which

can be vocalised and translated into different languages. The beauty of the TalkforMe App is the fact that all the groups are user defined which means they are relevant to the individual who sets it up. Users of this App could also include those who regularly travel to other countries and people who have speech or learning difficulties. The basic idea is that the user can add as many pictures and sentences as they wish and organise them into relevant groups. The user can call on this vast library of content to communicate their message to another person by just clicking on an item which consists of a picture and a sentence and pressing the ‘talk’ button. This sentence is then spoken and the user can choose different languages to repeat the sentence depending on their location. Hugh said: “This degenerative illness has made it more difficult for Karl to speak and communicate his needs as he got older. I wanted to do something to help and spent a number of months developing the TalkforMe App. He uses it every day and there is huge potential for it to be used by other people who have difficulty with verbal communication,” said Hugh.

Tragedy At Run For Life A race in Ardgillan to highlight men’s health issues ended in tragedy as a Malahide man collapsed and died as he neared the finish of a 10K run in the picturesque North County grounds. Ian Dangerfield is believed to have died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome(SADS). One hundred people a year under 35 in Ireland die from the disease with a high percentage being those involved in

sporting activities but research is still ongoing to work out the puzzle of why it happens. Fellow competitors claimed that the course for the 10K may have been too challenging with a steep hill near the finish which many found tough. Mr Dangerfield collapsed near the hill as he completed the second lap of the course. Medics were only one hundred yards away when the tragedy

happened and gave assistance as they waited for an ambulance but their efforts proved futile as Mr Dangerfield was pronounced dead at Beaumont Hospital within the hour. Mr Dangerfield worked at the University Of Ireland in Maynooth as a researcher and was among just over 200 runners at the event run by Men’s Health Ireland in conjunction with the GAA, FAI, Irish Heart Foundation, Irish Cancer Society and the Marie Keating Foundation.

“Charity begins at home” is a well worn soundbite and a Lusk native has disproved that by travelling the globe to help those less fortunate through volunteer assignments. Stephen Howlin has just returned to the North County from a spell as a volunteer with the Umbrella Foundation in Nepal, as they try to help orphans. However, he’s not the only one in the family to have a charity wanderlust, with mum, Joan also a world traveller. She is currently in Vietnam after spells in Cambodia, The Serengeti, South Africa, Tibet and Peru under her belt and another madcap charity idea to cross Antartica also in the pipeline. Not surprisingly, it was his mum who inspired Stephen to begin his volunteering career and he started out by doing a 500 mile charity walk with Irish rugby international, Jamie Heaslip, who is a patron of the Umbrella Lusk man, Stephen Howlin pictured with some Nepalese children that he was able to Foundation for whom help through his work with the Umbrella Foundation Stephen now does have to get a job but there’s not a lot about. This will have a major impact on the North County. He said, “Under this plan, I understand those out of work will be offered placements in after-school services, childcare, services for older people, environmental projects, heritage centres, tourist facilities and sports clubs. This will be very welcome news in the North County and I will be encouraging the Minister to make a significant number of these places available to people in the communities across this area,” said Kennedy. “Under the plans, the Community Services Programme and the Rural Social Scheme which currently provide 5,300 placements will be adapted and expanded. This is very important in the North County, where unemployment is a real concern and is affecting many people.” Kennedy continued, “At the moment it is envisaged that those who take up a placement under this plan will not be means-tested and will be offered €210 for a 19 and a half hour week. It is also likely the

places to be made available would be offered when a person reaches the six months on the Live Register threshold.”

“Obviously the department will investigate where a person refuses a training place and the plan should help in the detection of social welfare fraud but I believe this plan represents a win-win situation. People who are out of work will maintain their employability and at the same time groups will get an extra pair of hands to carry out important work in the community,” he concluded.

Four successful businesses have been shortlisted for the 2010 Fingal Enterprise Awards as part of the largest enterprise initiative in the county – Fingal Enterprise Week, which runs from Monday September 27th until Friday October 1st. “The series of events planned for are highly topical and relevant with a focus on the practical areas that small businesses need to know about,” according to Oisin Geoghegan, CEO with Fingal County Enterprise Board. “There has been unprecedented demand in the last two years for information and

advice around raising finance and new business opportunities. Those are two of the toughest challenges facing small business owners today and these seminars will help inform and advise small businesses and start-ups around these crucial areas,” he said. The ‘Finance and Funding’ symposium will be an interactive panel discussion with contributions from chartered accountants, taxation experts, state support agencies and financial institutions. With George Lee acting as the M.C., the event takes place on Tuesday, September

New Minimum Payment Plan Set To Cause Hardship Deputy Darragh O’Brien (FF), has exposed a little known plan by Eircom, which will have a detrimental effect on already hard

By Patrick Finnegan pressed residents in the North County. The company plans to impose a minimum payment for bills of €20 at Post Offices around the country, which will have a significant impact on pensioners and those on low incomes and he has urged Eircom to come clean on why it is imposing a minimum payment on customers who want to pay their bills in instalments

through their local post office. He said, “I have become aware that Eircom will impose a crazy new rule which will take effect from October 1st and will not be accepting payments less than €20 off customers’ bills at Post Offices. This is totally unnecessary and will impose a financial pressure on those on pensions and other social welfare benefits. This plan will have a detrimental impact on those Eircom customers. I have received a number of calls from concerned Eircom customers who pay their bills in precisely the way that is now being restricted by the

company. He continued, “Many people in receipt of State benefits collect them at the post office and then pay some money off their bills. This new plan, which has not been widely publicised by the company, will come as a surprise to many Eircom customers. I am very disappointed by this decision to bring in this change and I want it stopped before it’s even in effect,” he added. People on low incomes rely heavily on their personal budgets and financial planning. They use it to plan out their spending during any given week. This planned change could force people to run-up a bill until they can afford it. It’s time for Eircom to see the madness in this idea and stop it before it is implemented and causes unnecessary hardship,” he concluded.

The Nifti bus has been in operation for eight years now and has proven to be a great success. The bus has provided a vital service to the rural villages of the North County including, Ballyboughal, Naul, Oldtown and Garristown to mention a few. Youth Cafe To Open In Malahide

The ideal candidates would be those who wish to help teenagers achieve things for themselves. Full training and support will also be provided by professional youth workers. The cafe would give teenagers their own space to meet up and socialise.

The Biggest Circulation Of

Malahide Youth Service are set to open up a Youth Cafe for the area’s teenagers and are looking for volunteers. The cafe will initially be open one night a week and will provide a

safe place for older teenagers from the local community. Due to no funding, the service is recruiting volunteers who must be over 18 to assist in the running of this worthwhile project.

Legend Launches New Swords Pitch International goalkeeping legend and FAI Technical Director, Packie Bonner paid a visit to Thornleigh in Swords last week as part of the FAI Mini Pitch programme. It is expected that the pitch there will be completed early next week and will provide endless hours of fun for the local community. Packie explained to the County Leader how the project came to pass, “We received funding from EUFA and we went to government, who also provided us with further necessary funding. It meant that the original number of pitches nationwide was increased from 20 to 64. We then applied to the local authorities and they granted us the land.” he said. In this respect great credit is due to the local council for providing the land. There will be four pitches in our area, namely, Thornleigh, Seabury in Malahide, St Catherine’s in Rush and another in St Margaret’s. Packie went on to explain, “These pitches are not just for soccer, but are available for basketball, volleyball or indeed any sport. We want the community to take ownership and they will prove to be a great use for kids and will take them off the streets. There are three key things for us as Irish goalkeeping legend, Packie Bonner is pictured an association, namely with local TD, Darragh O'Brien at the site of the new programmes, people and mini-pitch at Thornleigh, Swords. facilities. We cannot have programmes without people. The partnership effect is vital with all of the various agencies coming together.” He concluded by saying that these pitches place a great emphasis on the community and they are located near schools and are free of charge. Sport is the key to get rid of woes in the current climate,” he concluded.

shut. If you find that your windows are not keeping out unwanted draughts, maybe think about replacing them or doing some repair work on them if possible.

Seal your doors Check around the door frame and also under the door. You may want to buy a draught excluder or stuff a towel at the bottom of the doors. Close off any unused rooms as the closed door makes that room another barrier between you and the wickedly cold weather. It also stops air from circulating as much, which reduces heat loss. Put up sets of heavy curtains which can block drafts on both windows and doors. Open them when the sun is shining to help pull in the solar heat into your house and

close them when it gets cloudy or dark out to better keep the heat in.

Dress warmly Hats are a great idea, as it is a well known fact that 75 per cent of your body heat escapes from your head. Layer yourself with loose clothing rather than tight, as heat accumulates in the folds of the layers, keeping you much warmer than a tight sweater. You should wear slippers indoors but this will not help you if you have to go outside for any reason. You’ll just feel colder faster. Cover up with blankets if you are just sitting around watching TV or chatting in the living room. Candles can produce a lot of heat, but be mindful of where they are placed and do not

leave them unattended. If you look in the right places you can find candles on the cheap and packages of tea lights

could make a nominal difference. Take a hot shower, not only will this warm you up quickly, but the steam from the hot water will raise moisture levels in the house, helping the ambient temperature feel warmer. Be sure to run the hot water even after you are finished

because the more steam in the air, the better the temperature will feel. Make sure you run your towels and bathrobe (if you have one) in the dryer while you are showering so you have something nice and cosy to dry off with and snuggle into when you’re finished.

Feng Shui in your bedroom is very important, particularly if you find it difficult to sleep. There are many tips on how to apply good Feng Shui to your bedroom. Firstly, it is important to rid your bedroom of clutter. Let go of any TV, computer or exercise equipment.

Have images of what you want to see happening in your life. Avoid sad and lonely pictures in the bedroom. It is also recommended to avoid having pictures of water in the bedroom as this can cause insomnia as well as attract bad luck. There

are some guidelines for your bed if you want good Feng Shui. Firstly, it is important that it is easily approachable from both sides. Also, have a bedside table on each side. Do not have your bed directly in line with the door. It is advisable to avoid sleeping under a window as this may cause positive energy to be lost. Alternatively, hang a curtain over your window. Two enterprising Malahide men have decided to go into business together and the concept of their business could hardly be more simple. They have set up a company called “All You Need”, which is self explanatory and provides all kinds of services, both commercial and domestic. Glen Sutton and Jim McEvoy both worked as taxi drivers and decided that they could offer a service that was in demand by everyone. Jim explained, “Originally the idea was to specialise in patio and deck cleaning. We invested in the proper equipment and soon found that our services were in demand. We were even asked to complete the jobs of previous contractors. This included filling the gaps between the cobbles

with sand and cleaning up after them, separating dirt from water in accordance with local authority regulations. We regard cleaning up properly after a job as vital part of the work.” All aspects of gardening and household chores are undertaken by Glen and Jim, but as these are seasonal jobs in the main, they are looking to prepare for winter work. They hope that this brings them into the domestic market, where they can provide a proper service for people on the move. They have a van on the road, which means that they can get

to a job as quickly as needed. All kinds of work is undertaken by the company, including painting and decorating, window and gutter cleaning, all carried out in a professional and cost effective manner. Another advantage the company has is that, unlike many other companies, it does not charge a call out fee. They are local, dependable and trustworthy – a rare combination of qualities nowadays. Glen explained, “We are looking to expand our contract cleaning work to cover offices and houses. Anything we can do, we do. We will give an overall price for a job as we have access to skilled tradesmen, like plasterers, carpenters, electricians etc. Much of the work is done by ourselves, but when specialised work is required, we can provide that too.” Their work ethic is very high and they place a great emphasis on hard work and honesty. “We are not prepared to tell someone that we can do a job if we can’t. There’s plenty of work around and Jim and I will do most of the physical work and we hope to get more for next year,” he said. The establishment of this new company has been welcomed by local TD, Darragh O’Brien, who said, I am delighted to see yet another company starting up in the area. Apart from the current staff, All You Need intend to employ more staff, based on their workload,” he said. Both men are married and have families and Glen’s wife, Orla is involved in the business on a part time basis, looking after the accounts, phones and paperwork. They have two boys, Ian and Greg. Glen comes from a taxi driving background, and like Jim, he finds this kind of work much more satisfying. Jim is married to Suzanne and they also have two boys called Jack and Adam. They are both coaches with Malahide United Football Club and it was here that their friendship began. Indeed, their children have all been involved with the club over the years. The company, which was founded last March continues to flourish and they have received many compliments on their work from satisfied customers. “It’s amazing how little time many people have as they go about their daily business and I feel that this is where we can supply a useful service,” said Jim. They explained that the vision for the company would be to provide employment for people in the community and to

develop the business in Malahide, Portmarnock and Swords. This is a huge catchment area with tremendous potential for growth. Already we employ one girl and we hope to increase that as the business grows.” Their enthusiasm is infectious and it is very obvious that they are prepared to pull out all of the stops to ensure that their work is of the highest quality and referrals are sure to follow. Brain Injury Information Event In River Valley

“Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is the silent epidemic of modern timesâ€?, says Michael Clavin, Chair of BrĂ, in announcing an information event to be held at Swords’ Rivervalley Community Centre on 28th September at 7.30pm. Speakers will include Joan Burton TD, deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Ciara Rowan, Brain Injury Nurse specialist in Beaumont Hospital and Ned Rispin, BrĂ Development Officer. The most common brain injuries are from head injuries, more to younger people, and strokes, more to older people. Other injuries come from brain tumours and some neurological illnesses. Brain injuries have resulted in long-term disabling problems for more than 80,000 people in Ireland. The Rivervalley meeting will be a briefing on Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and how community support can help people with day-to-day reintegration. People at the meeting will also discuss establishing a local support group for people with ABI and family/carers. Many of these BrĂ Support Groups are already successfully in place in other counties.

Shreddies/Dublin Parks Tennis, which brings tennis to children in their local park or public venue, has recently completed another successful Summer season and will commence its Autumn programme starting 22nd September. This programme is a hugely successful project catering for over thirteen hundred children from all parts of the North County region. The Autumn programme will take place in Balrothery, Lusk, Donabate, Swords and Malahide. The programme introduces children to tennis irrespective of whether or not they have any previous experience in the sport. Implemented by Tennis Ireland certified coaches, these programmes bring low-cost tennis to all children without exception for the past thirty four years. This programme is subsidised by the County Council, The Irish Sports Council and NestlÊ with Shreddies. At the Summer Finals’ Day in St Anne’s Park, the North County region was heavily represented, with teams from Skerries Community Centre and Malahide Castle competing on the day. Also featuring in the Individual Competitions were children from Hazel Lawn and Malahide Castle. The boy’s team from Malahide Castle emerged victorious in Division One, while both the boys and girls teams from Skerries Community Centre were runners-up in the Premier Division following extremely close encounters.

Funding Commitment For Balbriggan School Deputy Michael Kennedy (FF) has welcomed a commitment from the Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills Mary Coughlan T.D. that a Balbriggan school will receive funding for works under the Contingency Approvals 2010. “I am delighted to say the Tánaiste has confirmed to me

that St. Teresa’s National School in Balbriggan has been approved for further funding for emergency lighting and fire alarm. This is really important work for the school and will provide further security and a safe environment for students and teachers,” he said. “The Government is committed to ensuring that school

infrastructure is up to scratch as much as we can and I will continue working for funding for schools around the area. The Tánaiste has been in the North County since her appointment as Minister for Education and Skills and I have spoken to her to emphasise the importance of the work being carried out at schools around the constituency,” he concluded.

Swords GIY Group Meetings Growing your own food is becoming somewhat of a trend, especially here in the North County, where we are so lucky to have some of the richest land in the country. GIY (Grow It Yourself) gives people the inspiration to grow their own food at home or in allotments. Mick Kelly from GIY told the County Leader, “ The North County is the vegetable garden of the city and we want to bring back the skills that were once in the household of every home in the County”. So if you would like to attend a meeting and see what it’s all about, the group will be meeting in the Carnegie Court Hotel the last Thursday of every month.

Balbriggan Enterprise Development Group Ltd. (BEDG) held a celebration day recently in an effort to showcase the work of the different projects they undertake. It also provided an opportunity to demonstrate the importance of continuing their mission that would be unlikely to be done in their absence. Pictured at the Community celebration day are, L-R, John Lyons of Alliance Insurance, Ciaran McGuinness of Archer Heritage Planning, Joe English, President of Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce and Tom Walsh of TriStar Travel. Shop And Accessorise Don’t go shopping for autumn or winter fashion clothing until you have reviewed your wardrobe and worked out what you need, and what styles and fashions look good on you right now. Spending a little dedicated time on sorting your wardrobe out now will save you time and probably a considerable amount of money also. More importantly, investing this time in yourself will also help you feel good and look good adding to your confidence and humour. So lock yourself in the bedroom with a full

length mirror and go for it, try on clothes. Maybe have a friend over or your partner for some advice, but if you want to do this on your own that’s the way for you. If this seems overwhelming then do the sorting out and set another time for the trying on. Using a timer is also a good way to ensure you don’t end up spending more time on this than you had first intended. Take a notebook and write down the types of clothes you need. For example, if you work, then you may need suits and formal work clothes. However, evenings and weekends you may favour jeans, tracksuits. If you are out socialising every evening, then you will need dressy clothes or possibly evening wear. If you are a Mum at home with a young family it is likely you will need more casual clothing, however these clothes also need to be versatile enough that you can nip out, without looking like you are in the middle of the housework. The North County is full of fashionably dressed ladies and they are known countrywide as being Yummy Mummies.

Dress for Confidence In the words of Oscar Wilde, “To love oneself is the beginning of a life long romance.” So many people in today’s society suffer from low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. These people often dress themselves to blend in, to remain anonymous and the more they experience isolation and not being noticed, the more they believe they are not worthy of attention. This is something that a person can change by believing in themselves, to find the beauty within yourself is important. Whether it is a beautiful smile, delicate wrists and hands, fantastic legs, great hair or fabulous curves, every one of us has attractive things about us and we need to make the most of them. We may or may not know what our positive attributes are, but once we start emphasising the things we do know for a fact are good, well before we know it we can have our confidence well and truly boosted. Remember, nobody has the authority to tell your confidence how to act only the Boss, You!

Local Talent Shines Through At Skerries Soundwaves The ever popular Skerries Soundwaves festival returned with an even more impressive line up of events. The proceedings kicked off on Friday 10th September with a Battle of the Bands in Shenanigans at 9pm. This had an added incentive this year, with the winning three bands gaining a coveted performance slot on the live rock trailer on the Soundwaves Festival day on the 25th September. The gig was well attended, with a capacity crowd of all ages there to enjoy the showcase of North County talent. The three bands chosen on the night to play on the trailer were quartet, “Thumbprint” from Skerries /Portmarnock /Balbriggan, “Headphone Syndrome” and “SunGun”, comprised of Andy McClelland, David Dooley, Dan Curran and Mike Daly. This lively start to the festival whetted the appetite for some excellent events which brought a unique atmosphere to the town, as it always does. A talented troop from the North County took to the stage last weekend. The six cast members, many of whom played multiple roles, put on a brilliant edition of the children’s classic “Alice in Wonderland”. The play was directed by Rush student, Chris Kelly, his ninth production at the tender age of nineteen. Previous successes included “Breaking Apart”, “The Sketchers” and his adapted version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet; “Starcrossed Lovers”. The cast was comprised of Shane Browne, Kerill Kelly, Katie Weldon (Alice), Kate Coughlan, Ciara McGuinness and Sarah Jordan. They hail from Skerries, Loughshinny, Rush and Swords. The show itself, just over an hour long, was entertaining to young and old alike. Speaking to the County Leader, Katie Weldon remarked on how “the cast bonded really well over the months of preparation. We really helped each other, developed our characters and had a good time”. It seems a bright future is in store for Chris and his talented group of actors, judging by this performance. The fun continues right up to Sunday, 26th September.

Joseph Daly of Teach Hilda, a company whose goal is to bring the finest organic foods from the South of Italy to Ireland, was present to see the success of the company’s produce in a Skerries pizzaria Speaking to the County Leader, Joseph explained,“We supplied some of the ingredients, but most were sourced locally where possible. Everything on the menu tonight, to every extent possible, has been made from organic ingredients”. The restaurant was fully booked out, and the wholesome food seemed to go down a storm with the local patrons.” he said. Pictured are, Saleem Choudhry, Joseph Daly of Tech Hilda and Faizan Choudhry. Over one billion people in the Islamic world celebrated the Eid al-Fitr holiday last week. From Indonesia to Morocco, Muslims took the day off work to celebrate the religious holiday with family and friends. In the North County, one small group of Muslims held their celebrations locally. With exclamations of Eid Mubarak! (roughly translating as Happy Eid), the festival marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. During that month every year, Muslims fast during the hours of daylight, offer donations to charity and pray. The first Eid was celebrated in the seventh century by the Prophet Muhammad with his companions and rela-

tives, after the completion of a month of fasting. Today, the occasion is marked by gift-giving and a large feast. Eid is a time to come together as a community either in a mosque or in town halls or squares to renew friendship and family ties. This is exactly what happens where guests are treated to a fantastic meal of traditional food. A great family occasion, Eid al-Fitr is a big day for the kids who receive presents and get the day off school. With nice weather, a good turnout and plenty of food, Eid celebrations are always a great success and are eagerly awaited by the Muslim community here in the North County.

North County Leader’s Weekly Helpful Guide For Jobseekers

Last issue we covered the use of job boards and company websites in your search for your new role. The importance of identifying, knowing and using your network to further your aim of getting a new job should not be underestimated.

Getting out and about is invaluable, even going to the shops increases your chances of meeting people – everyone shops! Remember to let your circle of friends know what you do. Keep in contact with colleagues, friends, family etc. Every employer is a person with interests and personal connections. Most people like to know who they are bringing into their company that is to your advantage! Stay positive and keep going! Don’t be too subtle and don’t go on too long! Remember go to any local event, from a public meeting to a get together with former colleagues. Identify and use your network!

Networking: People underestimate the value of talking to people! If you aren’t working it can be hard to make sure you are “Out t h e r e ! ”

Coming up is the Fingal Enterprise week which will be held in the Europa Academy from the 27th September, this will provide excellent networking opportunities.

Late of 4 Derham Park, Balbriggan. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, So he put his arms around you and whispered come to me. With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away, And although I loved you dearly we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, God broke my heart to prove to me he only takes the best. ~ From your Loving Husband Billy.

Late of Skerries Road, Lusk, Co. Dublin. In memory of our dear parents Our lives are all different now, from what they used to be, all because you are not here, to share our company, we miss your smile, your joking ways, we miss the things you used to say, and when old times we do recall, its then we miss you most of all

Miracle Prayer

You always waited for me, Anxious, if I were late, In winter at the window, In summer by the gate, Your thoughts were always for me, Not once did you forget, And so I know from Heaven above, You’ll be waiting for me yet. ~ From your Loving Daughter Helen, Son-in-law John and Grandchildren Stephen & Sean.

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time, I ask you for a very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted no matter how impossible. Never known to fail. SC
