he ever popular Turvey Golf Club in Donabate has gone into receivership and is facing possible closure. This club, which provided top class golf and apres golf facilities for many from the North County and beyond, may be lost forever. The club was bought by the members in August 2003 for €6 million, of which €1.2 million was raised by the members themselves. The other €4.8 million was funded by the banks.
By Sinead Walsh
OPENING HOURS: Mon – Fri 10-5pm. Sat 10-1pm Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer
The club has not repaid this loan and Niall Macklin of KPMG has been appointed as receiver. It is understood that the members have no personal liability to the loan, and that the clubhouse and land were used as security. Macklin told the County Leader, “KPMG are the receivers over the property, including the land, clubhouse and hotel. Kieran Wallace, a partner, has been appointed receiver over the assets of the Golf Club. It is likely to be sold as of now.” He continued, “We are offering advice on the options available and the strategy to be adopted in the disposal of the club’s property, We have a number of interested parties and we will progress discussions with them. The interested parties have an interest in reopening the golf club.” He also said that a total of 8 staff have been affected, 5 full-time and 3 part-time. The management of the club had planned to sell parts of the land on the course to generate revenue
and make repayments on the loan. However, planning permission was refused on a number of occasions, and so, the land was unable to be sold. Despite gaining around 50 new members last year, the has club remained in financial difficulty. Members received an email on the 4th of January, explaining that upon instruction of the receiver, the club would remain closed until further notice. As it stands, members who have paid their membership for the year are unsure of what will happen to their money. Another Donabate club, Corballis, is operated as a public “pay-and-play” course. This option could potentially be a viable one for Turvey, which would mean the popular course could remain open. Club Captain, Chris Sherwin, explained the situation from the member’s perspective. “We approached the bank with the suggestion to lease the course out, but they shut that down. We asked them to reduce the interest, and they ruled that out too.” He spoke about the County Council’s refusal to grant planning permission. “They stopped us building 20 units on the land, and yet they let Tesco build their huge warehouse across the road.” The members who have paid their membership are unlikely to see their money. “That money has already gone into running the club, so that money’s gone.” Mr. Sherwin also believes the bank already has a buyer lined up, but the members have not been told anything yet.

Perimeter Fence To Provide Great Improvement By Swords In Litter League Security For Swords Estate Deputy Michael Kennedy (FF) has welcomed the planning approval given for a 2.4 metre fence to be erected to provide additional security for residents living north of St. Finian’s Community College in Swords. He said, “I’m delighted approval has been given for this fence. It will be located at the boundary of a large open space where there have been incidents of anti-social behaviour which is affecting local residents and their quality of life. This fence will
provide extra security for Southbank and Castlegrange Way. The residents have raised the issue of anti-social behaviour with me on a number of occasions and I have been making representations on their behalf to the County Council.” “I believe putting this fence in place will provide additional security and greater piece of mind. I will continue to engage with local residents to see if there is anything further that I can do regarding this matter,” he concluded.
There was great news for Swords last week when the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) league table was released. The bustling capital of the region has dramatically improved its position on the previous two league tables. Swords finished in 28th position in the 2009 final as ‘Clean to European Norms’. It has held onto this status for this, the final round of 2010 and shown improvement by finishing in 12th position nationwide, performing as the second best area in Dublin after Blanchardstown, a great result overall for the County Council. To put this great
performance into context, it is important to note that Swords finished in 32nd position as ‘Moderately Littered’ in the 2010

first round of the IBAL Anti Litter League in August, so again, it has shown improvement on this result. Carlow was the overall winner. Chairman of Swords Tidy Towns committee, Des Becton
Portmarnock To Get Local Bus Service
Michael Kennedy TD, pictured at the site where the fence will be erected to provide extra security for residents living north of St Finian's Community College in Swords.
Residents of Portmarnock have been given a boost, with the news that a new local bus service will be up and running shortly. Local councillor and deputy County Mayor, Peter Coyle has welcomed the news that a licence has been granted to Mr Joe Barrett for running a local bus service in Portmarnock, feeding into the local railway station. Barrett has been seeking this license for over a year now. Coyle said, “Apart from the
was understandably cock-a-hoop at the result. He told the County Leader, “We are absolutely thrilled with the result. Last year, we were classified as ‘Clean to European Norm’ in seven of the 10 sites inspected. The two areas in particular that let us down were the Bottle Bank outside the Council’s Environmental depot on Watery Lane and a site towards the back of Swords Business Park. Thankfully, there has been a massive improvement in these areas and we need to be vigilant to ensure that we at least maintain our standing, and preferably improve on it. The standard was

Apart from DART passengers, the buses also will serve the many residents from Station Road and Portmarnock village to go to Dunnes Stores, the Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Centre etc. Likewise it will assist Martello estate and Upper Carrickhill residents to get to the village. This news is very welcome,” he concluded.

extremely high this year and Swords performed exceptionally well to achieve such a high ranking. Special thanks is due to the management of Airside Retal and Business Parks, to St Andrews Park residents, the staff and pupils of Fingal Community College.”
He was also full of praise for the efforts of the staff of the Council’s Environment section and the Parks Department for their continuing hard work. Swords Castle was singled out for particular mention,” said a proud Des, who went on to remind everyone that the Tidy Towns committee are always looking for volunteers.

Kennedy Holds Public Forum With Minister O'Cuiv Deputy Michael Kennedy (FF) and the Minister for Social Protection, Eamon O Cuiv TD held a public forum on 12th January last in the Carnegie Court Hotel in Swords. The forum was to highlight the new Tús Community Employment Scheme. Kennedy said, “This meeting is about bringing local communities together to see how they can avail of the opportunities to have people work on local projects to benefit the entire community. The Tús programme is designed to take people who are unemployed and give them an opportunity to make a contribution to their local communities, while maintaining their PRSI record and
allowing them to gain work experience.” “People participating in the scheme will receive their current maximum social welfare payment, as well as a top-up of €20 per week for the 19 and a half hours that they work. They will also be allowed to work outside of this and maintain their social welfare allowance while they are on the Tús scheme. This provides a significant incentive for people to participate on this scheme.” He continued, “In a community context, I was delighted to see over seventy people turn up from various community and voluntary projects from across the constituency to find out about how they might avail of this project.

feeling very confident before the match, and seeing as France were the defending champions, there was added incentive. “This is the best team Ireland has had in a very long time, so it was good to get one over on them.” David has been running since he was 15, joining the athletics team in Portmarnock Community School. When he was 18, he joined Raheny Shamrocks, coached by legendary distance runner, Dick Hooper. In 2006, David made the Irish Junior European team, and soon captured
influence on David. “He has been running since he was 21 and has run in a lot of marathons. He finished in the top 100 of the Dublin Marathon in 1996.” So what’s next for Donabate’s talented young athlete? “I guess short term, I’d like to get some fast times on the track. Long term maybe would be to make the Olympics in 2012 or 2016 in some event, but I’ll have to work hard,” he said. One thing’s for sure, wherever his ambitions may lie, the future is bright for Rooney.

Road Closure May Put Businesses At Risk The temporary closure of a road to facilitate the laying of the controversial Eirgrid Interconnector is causing great concern to local businesses. Part of the R129 from the R108 junction at Ballyboughal to the R122 junction at Browns Cross will close from 24th of January to the 1st of April. “This will absolutely destroy businesses,” said local busi-
nessman, Tony Corbally, Director of Fingal Farm Supplies in Oldtown who went on to say, “Our business provides a valuable service to the local community, supplying agricultural supplies, fuel, hardware, garden and pet supplies. On a daily bases we would have up to and over 100 vehicles coming to us, both customers and suppliers. By closing the road, these people
are not going to take a major detour to get to us, they are simply going to go elsewhere." On the short stretch of road between Keoghs Cross and Ballyboughal Bridge alone there are around 100 people employed. This closure will not only be a major disruption to these people but could mean staff will have to be made redundant if businesses are not able

to trade. He went on to say, “The timing of the closure could not be worse for our business, as January, February and March are the main months that we sell feed for livestock and obviously part of the main time of the year that we sell fuel. It was possible to bring a water main from Rolestown to Oldtown without closing the road; surely the same system could be put in place on the R129. This is causing severe problems for local businesses in a time of economic uncertainty and the question of compensation was raised. Corbally asked angrily, “If the road is to be closed, are the County Council and Volkerinfra going to pay our suppliers? Are they going to pay our wages? Are they going to pay our bank loans? Is the County Council going to reduce our rates bill to reflect the loss of business? Will Volkerinfra

compensate the businesses on the R129 for loss of earnings whilst the road is closed? Surely if they can manage to bring a cable across the Irish Sea they can manage to put a traffic management system in place to allow traffic to use the R129,” he concluded. Eirgrid Project Manager, Sean Meagher explained “We have met with many of the businesses along this stretch of the road to discuss measures that we could take to reduce disruption during these works. We will ensure these measures are in place before work commences. Measures such as additional signage, leaflets and advertisements have been agreed. The Biggest Circulation Of
Fianna Fail Candidates Anticipate Energetic And Challenging Campaign Fianna Fail's Dublin North election campaign was formally launched with the selection of incumbent TDs, Michael Kennedy and Darragh O'Brien to contest the General Election on behalf of the party. The convention, held at the Carnegie Court Hotel in Swords, was chaired by Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan. Deputy Michael Kennedy said, “I want to thank the party members who have once again given me their
support for the forthcoming general election. It has been a privilege to serve as a T.D. for Dublin North since the general election in 2007. In all my time as a public representative, not just as a TD, the constituents in Dublin North have been extremely engaging on the issues, both local and national. The provision of public transport and education services for the constituency have been two of the most important issues I have worked on
in recent years. Investing in our future must continue to be a priority. Building Metro North will create over 30,000 jobs and transform public transport for North County Dublin. Likewise, essential investment in our education facilities will ensure our children get the possible start in life. I know the forthcoming election will be a challenge for myself and my colleague Darragh O’Brien T.D. I am
confident Fianna Fáil can perform much better than we are expected to by the pundits and I look forward to the challenge of the campaign in the weeks ahead.” “Dublin North needs a TD with a proven track record of integrity and

honesty, a TD who has clear principles and has demonstrated his ability to stand up to those in his own party when he believed that they were heading down the wrong track. I believe that I am that person and that I have the track record to prove it.” Deputy Darragh O’Brien also thanked the local Fianna Fáil organisation in Dublin North, following his formal selection,
describing it as a “tremendous honour.” He said, “It is a privilege to again be selected by the party members. The forthcoming election is about the future of the country, but is also hugely important for the party. I joined Fianna Fáil 20 years ago and it has been an honour to represent the people of Dublin North in the Dáil since 2007. I intend to fight to retain my seat in the elec-
tion. I believe I have brought fresh thinking into the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party and that I have much more to offer. The next few years will be extremely important for Ireland and I believe we need young, fresh thinking in the Dáil. As a young family man, I know the difficulties facing many families in my constituency and across the country. I want to be part of formu-
lating the policies that will build a new sustainable future for all of them.” A determined O’Brien concluded, “I’m looking forward to the election campaign. It will be a challenge but I’m up for that challenge. I’m also up to the challenge of playing my part in ensuring that credible and realistic plans which the people can believe in and which we can deliver are put forward.”

The Biggest Circulation Of
Storytime At Skerries Mills Megan Wynne, who runs creative writing classes in Malahide, Donabate and Skerries launched a new book, just in time for Christmas called 'The Storytellers' at Skerries Mills. Thirty eight of Megan’s students contributed stories to the book. This is Megan’s third year to produce a collection of her students' short stories and is also her biggest, costing only €3.50. The ‘Storytellers’ is being sold in aid of St. Vincent's De Paul. Megan told the County Leader, “I’m delighted with the reaction to the book so far, we have sold over 250 copies and hopefully will sell some more. All 38 writers who attend Creative Writing classes with Megan contributed stories. There are ghost stories, Christmas stories, historical f i c t i o n , contemporary
children's and adult stories - in fact something for everyone! We printed three hundred copies and are delighted to have sold 250 already. The local St. Vincent de Paul was represented at the launch by their president, Geraldine Andrews, and treasurer, Noleen Lacey. Megan Wynne kicked off the evening by thanking her husband Oisín van Gelderen, for designing the booklet, Barbara Coleman for co-editing the stories, Maria Manueco and Sylvia Caldwell for typing up the corrections and Barry Morris for negotiating a deal with a printing company. She then handed over the microphone to Geraldine Andrews, who thanked everyone for supporting the booklet and assured them that their money would be put to excellent use. Then children read their stories aloud while the audience munched on mince pies, supped mulled wine, and soft drinks. Finally, the authors signed the booklets and everyone went home filled with festive spirit! It was a great event and very well attended - well over one hundred people were there.

Malahide School Prefabs Frozen Donabate lady, Ciara O'Connor has been selected to represent Ireland at an International Climate Camp in Goa, organised by the British Council's Challenge Europe Programme. Ciara is an Environmental Service Manager at Ecocem. Challenge Europe is a British Council funded programme which brings together young professionals from a diverse range of professions who want to make a lasting impact on minimising the effects of Climate Change. In January, the British Council will hold an International Climate Champions Camp in Goa with representatives attending from Europe, the US and Asia. Ciara and her colleague, Ryan George have been selected to represent Ireland at this event. Ciara's background at the Carbon Trust and her current positions as Environmental Services Manager at Ecocem and head of their Carbon Consultancy Division EmissionZero, have made her the ideal candidate for the job. Ciara commented: “I'm delighted and excited to be part of this project. I look forward to developing our projects with the other advocates in India and also contributing to discussions on how to reduce the environmental impact climate change and tourism are having on the unique Goan ecosystems.' Ciara and Ryan, during their time in Goa, will be exposed to the devastating effects climate change is already having, and will continue to have in this part of the world. The massive increase in tourism in this area has placed a massive strain on the Goan environment and water supplies and the advocates will explore solutions to this during their time at the camp.

The Department of Education has decided to purchase existing prefabs instead of building a permanent extension to a Malahide school, resulting in hardship for the pupils. This has come as a major disappointment to the principal of St. Sylvester’s Infant School, Sharon Dunne. In an exclusive interview with the County Leader, Mrs Dunne said, “I’m very disappointed with the decision of the department. In the current economic climate we could have had six class rooms and two resource rooms built for less than a million euro. This would have been the best solution and fit in perfectly with the department’s ‘better value for money’ initiative.
By Leslie Murphy During the snowfall in December, pipes in all of the prefabs were frozen, we had no running water and toilets weren’t flushing. In winter
on these prefabs and the department paid 95 per cent of this. When Mrs Dunne asked the department to build the class rooms she was told no as they had bought the prefabs. There

are 180 children in these prefabs and they are almost 28 years old. Angry parent, Jill Sherry contacted the local representatives in the area and said, “I highlighted the delapidated state of the prefabs, which is glaringly obvious to anyone who cared to
view them. My eldest son is one of the unlucky ones to be in Room 18, where each morning, we are greeted by the teacher telling us to keep the children’s coats on until the classroom heats up.” She continued, “The room is being heated by a couple of plug-in heaters and it never really heats up. There is currently no running water and the toilets are being flushed manually by the caretaker,” she concluded. As advised by the department, the school have employed an architect and are awaiting three tenders from builders so as to apply for an emergency grant to lag the pipes. Mrs. Dunne concluded by saying, “This will not sort out the limited space or heating problems in the prefabs, it’s just another quick fix. By renovating the prefabs this will cause a lot of lifting and mess and also interfere with the pupils.”

Welcome Stone Officially Unveiled In Lusk County Mayor, Cllr Ken Farrell, officially unveiled a “Welcome Stone” on the Skerries Road in Lusk on 30th December last. This area was a derelict site left behind by builders and a road widening project with nobody accepting responsibility for cleaning the mess. Lusk Tidy Towns Association volunteers, with the help of some local farmers during 2010, cleared the site, levelled it, put in some good quality top soil and reseeded it with grass. A new “Welcome to Lusk” stone sign was erected by Lusk Tidy Towns at this location on the Skerries Road approaching the
Skerries Road Roundabout in Lusk Village. Tom Kilmurray of Lusk Tidy Towns committee said, “This area was one of the derelict sites highlighted in the 2010 Tidy Towns Report and it is hoped that, when the grass grows (after the snow) and with some nice planting of flowers and shrubs, it will be a big improvement on the approach road to Lusk from Skerries. With all budgets stretched, the work of Lusk Tidy Towns gets harder, but we hope to call on more voluntary efforts from all residents to help “Keep Lusk Tidy” and make Lusk a nice place to live,” he concluded.

Getting rid of clutter is a big New Year tradition for a lot of people. Once the Christmas decorations have been put away, it’s a great way to see what kind of space you have in your home. Then, rather than putting all the things you have moved back into their place, decide on what you really want, as opposed to what is clutter. Put things in storage boxes that you don’t want to decide on till later and when you come back to them you will be sure to know if you still want them. Balbriggan Market Success Balbriggan TD Trevor Sargent has long been a champion of local food growing and marketing. Indeed, he grows much of his own food in his back garden, an adventure which he documents on his blog, www.TrevorsKitchenGarden.ie. Little surprise then, that in his time as Minister for Food and Horticulture, one of his objectives was the development of a Fish and Farmers Market for his home town of Balbriggan.

Malahide Welcomes Green Party Think-In The recent Green Party Think-In at the Grand Hotel in Malahide was a major political event, attracting media from far and wide. But this was by no means the first time a significant meeting of Greens took place in the town. In fact, the Fingal Greens are part of Malahide history, having been founded in the Grove Hotel in September 1984 by Trevor Sargent, then a local primary school principal, along with Colm Ó Caomhánaigh of Yellow Walls Road, now general Secretary of the Green Party nationally. Campaigns undertaken at that time included
bringing the DART to Malahide, getting a train service to run on Sundays, adding a footpath and cycleway across the Estuary to Donabate, a new school for Scoil Íosa and a local producers’ Farmers’ Market in the village. And while many of these objectives have been achieved, some remain a work in progress for the Fingal Greens. Following hot on the heels of the Party Think-In at the Grand Hotel on Tuesday, Trevor Sargent TD had the pleasure of opening an Exhibition of Photographic Biodiversity by Malahide

Bikes Now Allowed On Off-Peak Darts And Commuter Trains “Another Fingal Greens objective realised”, says local TD Trevor Sargent, commenting on news from Iarnród Éireann that bikes can now be taken on off-peak commuter trains and the DART. According to Barry Kenny, Corporate Communications Manager at Iarnród Éireann: “For the first time cyclists are now able to take bikes onboard DARTs and Commuter trains at off-peak periods. Bikes will be carried free of charge on DART and Commuter services between 10.00hrs and 15.30hrs, and after 19.00hrs, Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday (excluding times of major fixtures / concerts and similar events at Aviva / Croke Park etc). “Iarnród Éireann is delighted to be providing these additional services for cyclists and we hope that it promotes even more use of our services by cyclists. It will be a great opportunity for example for families at weekends to take their bicycles on our services, and visit areas that it
would not have been practical to visit previously. As well as supporting national policy on developing cycling, it is also very much a business opportunity for Iarnród Éireann, with the numbers of people cycling on the rise. Iarnród Éireann has also undertaken an audit of bicycle parking facilities at its 142 stations around the country. This will allow improvements in facilities to be

Tidy Towns and Camera Club in Malahide Library, on the Main St. The Exhibition will run until January 28, and will allow both residents and visitors to see the wide range of birds, insects and plants which can be seen all year round in the Malahide area. Other recent Green events in the area have included a meeting on Climate Change with Nobel Prize co-winner Professor John Sweeney in St. Andrews Hall. Many locals will also be keeping a keen eye on progress with the cycle and walkway crossing the Broadmeadow estuary. This will eventually connect Balbriggan to Bray, providing a safe, comfortable and very scenic route for tourists and residents alike. Ironically, it was the collapse of the railway bridge and the subsequent emergency repairs that facilitated the early engineering works required for the walkway.
targeted at areas under-served at present, and improve the accessibility of stations for cyclists, and further encourage the development of cycling.” In welcoming the positive response by Iarnród Éireann to his calls for greater integration of bike and rail services, local TD and cyclist Sargent said “This development is a bonus to visitors to north County Dublin. Allowing cyclists take bikes on off-peak trains brings us into line with many European countries and will open up more possibilities for leisure cyclists as well as commuters working outside the traditional peak hours. I for one will be using the train more with my bike and leaving the car at home, reducing traffic congestion and pollution.”
All Aboard! Senator Mark Deary (Louth), Trevor Sargent TD (Dublin North) and Ciaran Cuffe (Dun Loaghaire), Minister for Sustainable Transport bringing their bikes onto the DART at Malahide after the Green Party Think-In.
Water supply and flooding risks are two issues that Malahide Greens will continue to work on. The news of recent investment by government in water infrastructure, drive by Minister John Gormley, will be welcomed. Recent water shortages experienced by Malahide residents serve to illustrate just how essential a resource water is. Unfortunately, years of underinvestment by earlier governments will take some time, and a lot of effort and expense, to put right.
Criminalise Economic Treason - Sargent Trevor Sargent TD has introduced in Dáil Eireann, a Bill which seeks to amend the definition of treason in the Constitution. He believes an offence of ‘economic treason’ should be introduced. Convictions would be on foot of any decision made knowingly that results in reputational damage for the country, an unacceptable economic loss, or a loss of economic sovereignty and should carry mandatory
sentences and large fines. Trevor Sargent TD said the Irish people were justifiably confused and angry as to why nobody has been held responsible to date for the financial mistakes that have led us to where we are today. “We urgently need laws to prosecute white collar crime and fraud. We must bring to justice those whose self interest and greed so undermined our national wellbeing and without delay,” he said.
Fairness In Benefits Available To Self-Employed And Employees Needed, Says Sargent A number of self-employed constituents who have fallen on hard times have met with Trevor Sargent at his weekly clinic on Friday evenings and Saturday morning. Because they are not employees of a company they are entitled to fewer benefits than a redundant employee. “I appreciate the deficit in public finances but I also know we depend on the SME sector for the vast bulk of employment now and in the future. The self-employed people who create such jobs must be heard if enterprise is to be encouraged, said Deputy Sargent. In reply to Deputy Sargent, the Minister for Social Protection, Eamon Ó Cuiv T.D. stated that “financial implications” would have to be considered before any changes to the current system can be implemented.

METRO North Saved The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport, of which Trevor Sargent TD is a member, met in December to consider a report from the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transort (CILT) reviewing the previous Government’s Transport 21 plan or T21. The review found that 75% of spending went on roads, with little by comparison on bus provision. They found also that T21 had little awareness of the need to cut CO2 emissions in transport planning. CILT also recommended that PSO subsidies for air travel within Ireland be ended to help fund instead better landbased public transport. In addition, CILT sees a need for a full policy on carrying freight by rail. CILT also wants a fair and comprehensive system of road use charges, again to help fund and improve better public transport especially in areas not properly served by buses and trains at present. One aspect of their report was a proposal to halt development of Matro North and prioritise the DART interconnector. Commenting on this, Deputy Sargent said “Strange then after CILT highlights the need to cut CO2 to hear they want to stall Metro North in favour of the DART interconnector, as if that could be done economically! Metro North has planning permission and in every sense has ‘left the station’. To halt it would sentence Swords, the Airport, and indeed Ireland to no Metro and no DART interconnector for years to come, while the whole focus of work changed against a backdrop of empty state coffers. “Metro North has the advantage of being a PPP so state money is not a major factor. It has a 2:1 cost benefit to the economy (acknowledged by CILT) so it attracts the private investors. The interconnector is still a concept needing to be tweaked, as, for example, it does not plan to link with Connolly Station at present! The interconnector may well be a worthwhile project (4:1 cost benefit says CILT), but not at the expense of Metro North. Easy to see that none of the CILT delegation at the Committee lived in Swords or its hinterland which has a faster-growing population than anywhere else in Ireland, just ask the CSO or Fingal County Council”.
Good News For Skerries, Donabate And Malahide Cyclists In 2009, Fingal County Council published a consultant's report on how to develop cycling in Skerries Town Centre and in Malahide Demesne (Malahide & Skerries Cycling Study, Sustrans/Colin Buchanan, March 2009). The council sought funding for cycling and won a Smarter Travel Project Fund award of €757,000 to develop the Balbriggan-Skerries-Coastal & RuralCirculation Route, which is currently underway. However, they have been unable to get funding for the Malahide/Skerries project. But this excellent project has not gone away and
Sargent Assists In Negotiating Reprieve For Swords Ambulance Service Following discussions between the local TD Trevor Sargent and Dublin City Manager, John Tierney, a stay of execution on the Swords ambulance has been announced. Instead of a withdrawal date of 6 January, time has now been provided for discussions between the HSE and Dublin City Council. Between now and the end of January, these talks will take place with a view to settling outstanding cost issues. Commenting on the latest developments, Trevor Sargent T.D. Sargent TD at Swords Fire Station with Station said “This must be regarded as a Trevor Officer, John McNally significant breakthrough. The efforts of all community leaders and public representatives must now focus on finding the resources to maintain the critical emergency services. If costs are to be saved, we must face up to examining management and administrative overheads first. North County Dublin is the fastest growing area of population in the country and our emergency services need to keep up with this reality. I appreciate the expertise and commitment of the Dublin Fire Brigade team in Swords, particularly John Kidd, Joe Watson and Tony McDonnell of the Irish Fire and Emergency Services Association, and I was glad to be in a position to be of practical help in creating the opportunity for the service to be saved. I would also like to thank the Dublin City Manager for his willingness to examine all the options with a view to resolving this dilemma. I now hope that we can move quickly to resolve the question marks over this vital service and ensure its continued availability to the Fingal area” said Deputy Trevor Sargent TD in the Fire Station control room with John Kidd, Sargent. Staff Representative
Fingal County Council has amended its next Development Plan (2011-2017) to take account of it. In the current amended draft (available on www.fingalcoco.ie) Objective SKERRIES 2 now reads as follows: Prepare an Urban Centre Strategy for Skerries, reflecting the development strategy for the town, having regard to the needs of the local community and, where feasible and practical, incorporating the recommendations of the Malahide and Skerries Cycling Study prepared in March 2009.
We need principled, hard-working, honest politicians.
Trevor Sargent TD commented “As a long-term commuter and recreational cyclist, I welcome this response from Fingal County Council and if reelected to the Dail, I will continue to press for funding of this project and the Fingal section of the Balbriggan-to-Bray Cycle Route which became a government target at the insistance of my party. I also urge Fingal County Council to bring forward a plan to open up other parks in Fingal to cycling, as they have successfully done in Ardgillan.”
Sargent Makes Progress On Tackling Graffiti Issue Local T.D. Trevor Sargent has asked the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Mary Hanafin TD to help in co-ordinating Fingal County Council, Dublin City Council and the National Roads Authority in efforts required to clean graffiti, espe-
cially on the routes out of Dublin Airport. “The initial impression visitors to Ireland get should be a positive one. Well maintained, clean thoroughfares are important in this regard,” said Trevor Sargent, who has a keen interest in promoting local busi-
nesses, jobs and eco-tourism potential in Fingal. Mr. David O’Connor, Fingal County Manager, has responded and agreed to seek the active cooperation of the two other bodies to have the graffiti removed as requested.

Warning About Bogus Council Workers Trevor Sargent TD has urged householders in Fingal to be wary of bogus contractors who may call at their homes posing as Fingal County Council workers. He said “at this time, when a lot of work is being done in the county, repairing
burst water mains, it has come to my attention that there have been a few instances of bogus contractors posing as Fingal County Council workers. I would urge anyone receiving an unexpected visit from anyone claiming to be ‘from the Council’ to get in touch with Fingal County Council immediately on (01) 890 5000. It’s a sad reflection on the time we live in that we have to take such precautions, but better safe than sorry.”

Tony Bellew set up his 'One2One' mentoring service in September 2009. Tony is a former secondary school principal. Throughout his career in education, he realised that management and teachers in secondary schools have very little time for one to one interaction with students. A big part of Tony's service is listening to the student and parents, eventually coming up with an individual plan. The plan would include drawing up a suitable schedule for school related work. The service also includes expert advice on how to do quality homework, study and revision. Also, it puts a big emphasis on realising one's potential in examinations. Every student is different. Hence, the need for 'One2One' communication. The main aim of the service is to encourage each student to become more positive about secondary school and everything related to it. It encourages each student to take more responsibility themselves. It motivates each student to do the best they possibly

can in everything they are involved in. It helps them to identify weaknesses and put a plan in place to tackle them. With the right attitude and appropriate structures in place, every student can succeed.

North County Leader’s Weekly Helpful Guide For Jobseekers
New Year – New Career Writes Siobhán Kinsella Happy New Year! We have all survived 2010. 2011 is about getting on with our futures. It has been a hard few weeks on those employed and unemployed and the weather did decrease normal commercial and recruitment activity for permanent and contract roles. Temporary roles in labour intensive area such as retail distribution remained strong. Now is the time to restart your search for your new role with positivity and enthusiasm. To start, take a critical look at your CV using a pen that isn’t black. Review the layout, ensure that the type font is consistent and that is looks
easy to read. Ensure that you have listed your experience in reverse chronological order and that you have used bullet points to details your responsibilities / duties. Please also remember to list your achievements in your role and ensure that someone from outside your industry can understand the language you have used. If using spell check on your CV, please ensure that you have your PC set to UK English instead of US. Check for spelling and grammatical mistakes and then give your CV to someone else to do the same! Even today the biggest reason CV’s are discarded is for grammatical and spelling errors! Make a Plan! List your priorities in order of importance: location V’s salary, industry V’s security. Determine whether it is an SME or a Multinational that you think your skills would be most suited to and always, always look at your CV from the perspective of the employer. Why are they looking at CV’s, what solution can you bring to their needs.
