Is A Gun Being Put To Your Head... Or Does It All Make Sense? The upcoming referendum on the Fiscal Treaty is gathering momentum and supporters of both sides of the argument are settling down to do battle here in the North County. Because of the lack of information, many believe that a gun is being put to their heads to vote ‘YES’. This referendum appears to be causing more confusion than other ones, and campaigners on the ‘NO side feel that the government parties are using this confusion to their advantage Local Socialist TD and ‘NO’ campaigner, Clare Daly is in no doubt whatsoever that the public in the North County and nationwide are being bullied into voting ‘YES”. She told the County Leader, “The reason I am opposed to the treaty is that it undermines democracy and copper fastens austerity. The government parties and Fianna Fail are trying to use scare tactics in an effort to secure a ‘YES’ vote. These people are concentrating on bullying and blackmailing tactics, rather than on what’s actually in the budget. They are trying to frighten people with doomsday scenarios, which are utterly without foundation,” she said. Daly, who polled extremely well in the last general election to comfortably secure a Dail seat has a lot of support in the Dublin North constituency. The lack of informa-

By Patrick Finnegan tion and clarity on the contents of the treaty are causing locals to consider which way to vote,” she said.

Clare Daly TD

Whilst Daly and other parties on the left will benefit from the lack of clarity surrounding the main issues in the treaty, the ‘YES’ vote also has much local and national support. Minister Simon Coveney, Fine Gael Director of Elections for the Stability Treaty attended the official launch of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce campaign for a ‘Yes’ vote. Speaking to Chamber members, he said, “This treaty will

not fix our problems overnight, but it is a step in the right direction.” Minister Coveney was joined by President of Dublin Chamber, Patrick Coveney, in informing the business community that the Treaty is vital for stability and confidence in the economy. The referendum, which takes place on 31st May, is set to make a difference to Ireland’s standing in the European Union. However, many locals believe that, with so much lack of clarity and substance of the issues, they are unsure about how to place their vote. Both sides of the argument are entrenched in their views and feel that the other side is utterly wrong. But who’s right.? Residents of the North County will need total clarity about this vital treaty, before they cast their votes.

Local Fianna Fail Divided Regarding Corruption

Duane Browne, Secretary of the Swords Éamon de Valera Cumann, has criticised the Dublin North constituency organisation, following its recent meeting. He described their unwillingness to condemn those found to have accepted corrupt payments in the Mahon Report as “reprehensible”. He commented, “Following the publication of the Mahon Report, the Dublin North Fianna Fáil organisation received a letter from former T.D. for the constituency, G.V. Wright resigning from the organisation, thanking members for the privilege to serve the Fianna Fáil party as an elected representative.” Browne confirmed, “Several members indicated a desire to send a letter to G.V. Wright thanking him for his contribution to public life. I wanted to disassociate myself from any such correspondence. Corruption is wrong, and anyone who brings it into public life should

be roundly condemned, not thanked.” “It was suggested to me by one of the officer board of the Dublin North organisation, that I

Former TD, GV Wright

should ‘consider my position’. Another member of the organisation accused me of having a ‘cheek’ to propose such a motion, claiming

that G.V’s contribution to political life was massive. The unamended motion, which did not include the condemnation of those who accepted the corrupt payments, and which was supported by Senator Darragh O’Brien, was voted on and passed. O’Brien refuted this, when contacted by the County Leader, “I issued a statement within 36 hours of the release of the Mahon Tribunal, roundly condemning corruption by former members of the party. I have been very clear about this, which is fully in line with the views of our party leader, Micheál Martin,” he said. Browne concluded, “I feel compelled to consider my position as a member of Fianna Fáil, and to question whether any progress is being made in the effort to put morals and ethics to the forefront of the Fianna Fáil party in Dublin North.”

The film and multimedia competition, now in its fifth year is for third-level students, organised by drinkaware.ie, in association with the Digital Hub Development Agency. This year, the competition challenged students to explore the theme of ‘drinking in a home environment’. According to Ms. Sheehan, their film and multimedia projects highlighted how students can use new technologies and social media in innovative ways to comment on young people’s attitudes to drinking.

Portmarnock Students Impress Brother Kevin Students from Portmarnock Community School presented a cheque for €2,000 to Brother Kevin Crowley from the renowned Capuchin Day Centre at the school last week. Teacher, Anita Richardson explained how the idea came about. “During Home Economics Week back in March, the students decided to raise funds for charity, and after some thought, they decided to choose the Capuchin Food Kitchen, run by Brother Kevin. It tied in neatly with the theme,” she said. The students held a non uniform and bake sales, as well as bag packing in the local Dunnes Stores. They also

Localise Celebrates 40 Years Localise, a youth and community development organisation, celebrated 40 years caring for the community and volunteering. A celebration to mark the occasion took place at St.Colmcilles Church in Swords on Tuesday 1st May, which included an awards presentation to volunteers. Localise programmes engage young people in positive community work and in caring for others. Localise engages over 1000 young

people and adult volunteers directly in community service work annually. “With our volunteers regularly giving time, effort and energy in the service of others every-day is a celebration of kindness and generosity” says Derek Cleary Director of Localise. The voluntary organisation aims to hold several service days throughout the year. This will culminate with major anniversary celebrations in November. held a St Patrick’s Day Cake Decoration contest. In all, a total of €2,000 was collected for the charity. A clearly impressed Brother Kevin spoke to the County Leader about how donations like this are vital to the running of the Day Centre. “It is so heartening to see the generosity of the students here at Portmarnock and how they show concern for homeless people. it’s very heartwarming and uplifting. It takes €1.3 million to run the centre per year and our contribution from government is a mere €150,000 per year. So donations like this are the life blood of the organisation. We started up in 1969, with 50 people at the centre. Now we have 200 people for breakfast and up to 500 for dinner each day,” he said.

He was in Skerries Community School, as AIB Youth Ambassador to tell students all about the ‘Build a Bank Challenge’. Prior to this, he also visited St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush. The AIB ‘Build a Bank Challenge’ is an “enjoyable and exciting way for Transition and 5th Year students to run their own school bank and learn a lot about managing their own business” according to AIB regional manager Brian McGrath. The programme now reaches 215 schools having started with just 15 schools ten years ago. The ‘Gooch’ also took some time out to meet those who came out to see him. Third year students at Skerries Community College also got the benefit of his expertise as he put them through their paces with several ball work, kicking, passing and catching routines. Kerry GAA star, Colm 'Gooch' Cooper is pictured here with Paul Roban and Ger McNulty from Prosper Fingal, Skerries.

Ryan Welcomes Spent Convictions Bill Local deputy, Brendan Ryan (Lab) has described as “a positive step forward”, the publication of The Criminal Justice (Spent Convictions) Bill 2012. The Bill provides for certain convictions to become spent after an individual remains conviction-free for between three and seven years, depending on the sentence originally imposed by the courts. Custodial sentences of one year or less as well as a range of noncustodial sentences are covered by the Bill. Ryan said, “Over the last couple of years I have had countless people attend my advice clinics and contact my office who had employment opportunities blocked to them due to a previous offence. Some offences dated back many years and were very minor. Such instances highlighted a gap in the legislation which I am now happy to see is being filled by this Government. “I very much welcome its publication and I look forward to speaking on this Bill in the Dáil.”

Decision By Local Authorities To Cost Jobs

HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS

Jan 20 - Feb 18

Keep in mind that this week’s developments are only the beginning of a cycle of change, and you’ll feel less impatient. Instead, you’ll allow others to consider their options while you think about your own future.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20

A week to tackle awkward issues. In some cases, you’ve already raised these, in others guilt or worry have prevented you from acting. Now you can address them, but circumstances are likely to acquire a tough stance.

ARIES

Mar 21 - Apr 20

While this week’s dramas stimulate your courageous streak, others are rattled by sudden changes in arrangements involving business. You will have to deal with swift changes, while soothing numerous upsets.

TAURUS

Apr 21 - May 20

There’s little you can do to halt the quibbles over finances or decision-making triggered this week. What you can do, however, is to take advantage of the resulting forthright mood to address these - and other issues.

Gemini

May 21 - Jun 20

Until you examine the facts in the cold light of day, it is only then that you accept that you can’t do everything this week, and focus on the relevant and important activities - and leave for another day all the remaining ones.

Cancer

Jun 21 - Jul 22

While you can’t entirely avoid the bickering over issues that really aren’t your responsibility, as indicated by adverse planetary activity this week, you can state your positions clearly - and leave others to it.

Leo

Jul 23 - Aug 23

Your instinct this week is to fight all changes. However, you’ll soon realise that behind even ham-fisted offers lie opportunities to end one long and troublesome cycle and begin a far easier one - whatever about the changes.

Acting Not A Proper Job An investigation has been launched after passport office staff deemed that acting was "not a proper job". Michael Sheldon, who is appearing in a West End production of Three Days in May, countersigned a passport form for his daughter's boyfriend. But the application was rejected after staff told him that Sheldon was not regarded as an acceptable referee.

Conor Purdue, aged 11, from Balbriggan won the FAI/Fingal County Council in conjunction with Swords Pavilions “Road to Poland” competition. Conor will act as a flag bearer at the forthcoming match against Bosnia at the Aviva Stadium. He is pictured here with Pavilions Centre Director, Ian Hunter.

added “I would like to congratulate Conor. I have known Conor for a number of years through various FAI/FCC grassroots programmes and he is a worthy recipient of the prize. The format of the competition meant he was rewarded for his sportsmanship, attendance and his undoubted skill.” “The competition located to Skerries on 2nd May last and Swords Pavilions have kindly given two full Ireland Umbro kits as prizes, so no doubt there will be plenty of interest again” Ian Hunter, Swords Pavilions Centre Director commented, “We are

delighted to be a FAI Community Partner supporting their grassroots skills programme. We see this partnership as a key element of our involvement in our local community. After 10 weeks of the Road to

Poland 4v4 Skills programme, it was great to see the commitment shown by all the kids involved, the fun they had and the new skills learnt. In our view, every kid that took part was a winner,” he concluded.

Donabate/Portrane Educate Together National School celebrated the official opening of the school on Thursday, April 26th last. Paul Rowe, the CEO of Educate Together was the guest of honour on the day along with County Mayor Cllr Gerry McGuire. The children of the school performed ‘From Raindrops to Rainbows’ a show which traced the history of the school through song and dance. All 485 school students participated in the performance. The school community were delighted to come together to celebrate the first ten years of the school and to formally celebrate having a permanent home at last. This was also a chance for DPETNS to thank the many different community groups and organisations who helped the school in their journey towards a permanent home. Without the help of the Sea Scouts and the members of Turvey Golf Club the school may never have had a chance to grow, so they are very grateful to both of these community groups for all their help and support. The teachers and students of Donabate/Portrane community school are thrilled to have a beautiful permanent school building at last and hope that they can give back to the community who have supported them through the years. We’re sure the new facilities will be enjoyed by all in the months ahead.

Praise For High Standard Of Beaches

“I suppose, surprisingly enough, people are still coming out of the education system who can’t read or write, so there’s a constant demand for our services.”

Local deputy, Brendan Ryan (Lab), has welcomed the news that all beaches in the North County meet basic EU standards for water quality. This is a marked improvement from 2009, when three of the nine local beaches failed the minimum standard. Ryan said, “With over 30 miles of picturesque coastline, the beaches of the North County are an important resource and tourist amenity. I am encouraged to see that all beaches have met the minimum standards for water quality as set by the EU. A lot of Brendan Ryan TD credit needs to go to the County Council for their great work in improving the standards of our beaches and water quality,” he said. “Local people are very proud of the clean beaches and clean environment in North County Dublin. This pride manifests itself in loud and vociferous fashion against any threat to the delicate ecology of the North County. We saw this most recently in the protests against the Monster Sewage Plant, protests, which I took part in and wholeheartedly support. The goal now for the Council and people of the North County is to keep our water quality clean so we can invite and encourage more people to use the wonderful amenity of our beaches.”

in a job, with a particular problem and get their needs met.” Another spur for students to contact the VEC for literacy classes is that work practices have changed so much in recent years. “There’s also a constant demand from the workplace for skills and legislation has demanded specific courses and skills, so the workplace has moved from a less formal to more formal set up; and particularly with the economic situation when there’s huge competition for employment, we have to run a variety of language classes.” In the outreach centres, the courses are run at whatever time suits the organisation. The courses run at Sarsfield House range between day and night classes depending on the needs of the student and cater to those in the catchment area for the northern part of the county, from Lusk, Garristown, Skerries, up as far as Bellewstown. Paul says, “There’s a similar service for the southern part of the county, operating out of Swords,” adding: “Bear in mind that students will decide to go to an area other than their own. Not everyone is comfortable having to explain what or why they’re learning. “The service is confidential obviously, but we’ve found particularly with younger students that they’re quite happy to turn up to geographical locations that are handiest for them.” And local advertising and networking with local organisations gauges how many students they’re likely to have, and consequently how many tutors they’ll need to cope. The list for new volunteers won’t be compiled until autumn this year, and even those who are trained as tutors won’t be needed until sometime in 2013. He continued, “We train the volunteers, and it’s quite a labour-intensive training course. It’s 20 hours long plus “in service” which is where we ask for a commitment of a year once you’ve been trained. We ask that you give at least two hours a week for one year. Then they come into the office and we sign them up and assess them and place them. Some students might have had a scribe do a previous exam for them and now need to actually master the skill, other students might have dyslexia or learning difficulties and only now can dedicate the time to it.” The flexibility of the adult literacy programme is that it can cater to a range of task-based classes, and simply depends on the amount of students who need the practice in basic language. “An interesting point is that there was relatively little in terms of adult education before. Even just focusing on the literacy service, there’s a whole range of stuff from basic level one to Leaving Cert English as part of our curriculum.” He says that it’s not just a gateway into the full adult education service but to a level of skills that got people jobs before. “FETAC level three and four adults might have gone into construction upon leaving education the last time and now there’s none of that, so they’re retraining.” Students find out about the service through friends or the website fingaladulteducation.ie.

If the thought of having to read, write or be responsible for accounts makes your eyes water, gives you goose pimples or simply makes you blush as scarlet as the first day you had to do it in school, the national adult literacy programme will pleasantly surprise you. The VEC offers a series of free lessons that’ll help you stay the course in reaching the level of fluency you need to get you over the next hurdle. Paul Carroll is the organiser, whose area covers villages and townlands throughout the top half of the county. He’s one of the co-ordinators of students, courses and volunteer tutors who can help people brush up their three r’s, whether it’s for a work-oriented goal or just self-development. “We have students of all levels,” he tells the County Leader. “They could be employed or unemployed. They could be people who’ve discovered that their basic literacy skills are lacking and they could be from 18 to people in their 70s in terms of ages. “Our students are men and women who could be single parents, or married. They could be travellers, we have all social strata,” he explains of the first level of the adult literacy programme. The second strand of the VEC’s role in adult literacy education is in its matching of students to tutors who will engage them, and the third is in providing a setting that enables the student to conquer those skills. “People with weaker skills might go into a one to one with a volunteer tutor, those with sufficient skills might go into an adult education programme at whatever FETAC level suits them, and so on,” he says. “Our basic one English and Maths in the literacy service is only one part of the whole education conducted either here in Sarsfield House in Balbriggan or in Outreach centres throughout the North County. “The Outreach centres might be connected to disability groups or other HSE groups largely.” The voluntary aspect of tutoring has always attracted plenty of willing participants. There are about 3,500 volunteers nationally and the need for classes in the basics can be put down to a range of fluctuating reasons. Paul continues, “We’ve been here about 12 years; I suppose, surprisingly enough people are still coming out of the education system who can’t read or write, so there’s a constant demand for our services from those who might have left school for jobs that didn’t rely on an ability to read and write. “We have paid tutors to go to the outreach centres and the volunteers who operate from Sarsfield House are teaching subjects from basic literacy to the FETAC communications course.” The new FETAC qualifications are numbered, so that a Junior Cert qualification is about level three, Leaving Cert is about FETAC level four or five and the adult literacy programme caters to those who need written English and numeracy to those levels. “Not everyone will progress the full way through the system,” Paul says of returning to education. “Particularly, literacy students will stop along the system where their needs are met; someone could be

Great Show For Balbriggan Students Students from Balbriggan Community College took to the stage recently with their production of the world famous musical ‘ Mamma Mia.’ It’s safe to say that the show brought the house down! The two-night stint at the Bracken Court Hotel undoubtedly proved what a talented bunch of singers and dancers the cast were. The students really enjoyed working together and have been praised by their teachers Ciara Grant, Orlagh O’neill, Sarah Guilfoyle and Barbara Healy for their commitment and enthusiasm in bringing the show to the stage. They completed a rigourous set of rehearsals and despite

the short preparation time and a limited budget an upbeat, feel good night’s entertainment was enjoyed by the audiences. The cast featured Aine Mooney, Sophie Grant, Keri Richardson, Megan Gallaher, Leanne Whyte, Amy Murray, John Fabillar, Akeem Ayoola, Azeez Ayoola, Samuel Joseph, Tim Sweeney, Colm Reilly, Ben Marry, Andrew Kettle, Thomas Dawney, Lola Balogun and Kelly Whelan. The stage crew were Dean Fox, Peter Donohoe, Jamie Andrews, Ciaran Mccormack and Stuart O’Brien. Additional help has come from former students Ciaran Halpin and Cian McLeod, and their expert touches are much appreciated. A huge well done to all involved.

Suzanne Ní Dhálaigh Next up in our line up of lovely Rose of Tralee contenders is Suzanne Ní Dhálaigh from Naul. The 23 year old is really enjoying the Rose festivities and is currently in the middle of doing a Masters in Irish in UCD. “I just really love the language,” she said. “I was in no way fluent when I was in school, but I’ve been going to the Gaeltacht for years and picked it up from there and I enjoy learning it.” This is obviously no

easy task and quite something in our books! Ollie’s Bar in Skerries are sponsoring Suzanne for the Rose this year and she can’t thank Ollie enough for all the support throughout the competition. “Ollie’s really been fantastic,” she said. “He was in Tralee a lot when he was younger and is a big fan of the competition so it’s been terrific to have him as my sponsor.” Suzanne lives at home with her parents, two brothers and dog Charlie and went to Naul National School and then onto

Loreto Balbriggan. She has a love of languages and after doing a course in Arts and studying Irish and German, she spent a year in Germany before starting the Masters. “It was brilliant and loads of fun, though I don’t know if I could live there, it’s a little bit too organised!” She goes on to say how she’d love to get into teaching when she’s finished her studies. “At the moment, I’m doing some work as a substitute teacher in a Gealscoil in Tallaght which is going great.” The Naul lady wasn’t hugely into languages in school but says she picked them up from travelling with her family. “My main thing was that I always just enjoyed learning to speak them, you don’t have to be fluent in any of them to enjoy that aspect of it.” Her family are very musical, Suzanne and her brothers all play the piano and she has been playing the fiddle for almost 12 years. impressively, she learnt to play it by ear originally. “My neighbour got myself and her daughter to join the fiddle classes in O’Dwyers GAA club in

Balbriggan and it all went from there.” Following on from her love of the instrument, Suzanne now teaches the fiddle herself. “I do teaching at home now, which I really enjoy and used to teach in O’Dwyers before I went to Germany.” Suzanne is planning to take a year out and do a little travelling whilst hoping to get some more teaching experience. In terms of entering the Rose, she says she watched it religiously every year, and after hearing all about it from a friend (who happens to be this year’s Wexford Rose), decided to give it a go: “All the girls are having so much fun, that we just forget that its even a competition and enjoying ourselves.” She finishes off by saying that, if she were to be crowned the Dublin Rose, it would mean the world to her to represent Naul and Dublin and that her motto in life is always to try and be positive as something good is always around the corner. “The whole experience has just been brilliant.”

Elaine O’Dwyer There’s only a short time left to get those applications in for the Dublin Rose of Tralee and next up among our final candidates is Elaine O’Dwyer from Malahide. Elaine has been working as a science teacher in Malahide Community School for the past five years. Her parents are Patricia and Frank and she has one younger If you would like to enter this year’s Dublin Rose of Tralee fill out this form and return it to

brother, Paul and two dogs Cleo and Dawn. She has just returned from working on a very innovative project in India. “I set up a Kiran project between our school and a school in India, which works with children with disabilities,” she told the County Leader. “Our school has many trips abroad, such as Ski trips, but nothing like this so we set it up through the local parish. Myself, three other teachers and eight students travelled to the school in India and supported them and learnt about the work that they do there.” Elaine says it was a Once in a Lifetime trip: “It was just an amazing experience, not only for myself, but for the students that were with us. We got to work with some of the kids and our eyes were really opened as to how difficult things can be for people. The students that came along were just brilliant, the trip brought

Aisling Murray 26 year old Aisling Murray from Artane is our next Dublin Rose hopeful. The Rose is a totally new experience for this young lady who is having the time of her life and enjoying all the aspects of the competition. Aisling comes from a large family that she is very close to. She lives at home with her parents Julie and Ronan and has an identical twin sister, Aoife and a younger brother Lorcan. After finishing secondary school, Aisling went on to do Pre Nursing and aims to go further in the field when the time is right as she wants to have it as a full time career. She also loves horse riding, having been doing it for years. The entire Rose experience is a very personal one for Aisling, who after being diagnosed with Epilepsy when she was just 13, feels she has reached a big milestone by simply entering into the contest. Sitting down to chat with the County Leader, she says having gone through plenty of ups and downs since getting originally diagnosed, she feels ready to give it her all in the contest. “It's the first time I've ever really spoken out about it but I think it’s terrific just to talk about it when I’m involved in something that’s so positive.” She is hoping

to use her whole Rose experience to create more awareness for others with Epilepsy and hopes that others will be able to relate to her in some way. "I really just want to encourage others to speak out about it, as its not something that you feel you should have to hide from others." Speaking about her condition, Asling says that though it's under control now, it took a long time to get to this stage. "From the age of 19, it got more noticeable and then once I got through college at 22, I started having around 40 seizures a day and really had to work hard to get it under control. Thankfully, it's all right now, but it's been a long journey to get to this point." "Since getting everything under control over the last year, I just decided to not let anything hold me back so I'm doing the Rose and going to pursue nursing and hopefully learn how to drive." At the moment she is heavily involved with The Debra Ireland organisation which deals with helping those who have Epidermolysis Bullosa, a distressing and painful genetic skin condition, which only affects around 300 people in Ireland. "I came across the condition

when I was doing a placement and it just really stayed with me. They're a very small organisation and I thought the Rose could create plenty more of awareness for them. They really do fantastic work." Aisling recently organised a very successful table quiz for them and raised a staggering €973 in the one evening! "I really noticed how generous people are, it's wonderful." Speaking about the Rose, Asling said that it was the perfect way to move forward: "Being involved in the Rose has just brought my confidence right up," she said. "Part of me still can't believe I'm doing it but I just decided to go for it." This terrific outlook goes hand in hand with Aisling's motto in life which is: "Feel the fear and fight it anyway."

out the best in everyone.” The staff and students at Malahide Community School worked hard and fundraised for a year before the trip. “We were able to give the school a presentation of around €10,000, which we were delighted to do, it’ll make such a big difference to them,” she continued. “We’re going to keep the fundraising up as we just think it’s so worthwhile. It’s such an empowering place, the work they do is just incredible. I hope through my involvement with the Rose that more awareness will be raised.” In terms of getting the funds for the trip organised, Elaine says the response they got from the community was just amazing. “The community were unbelievable and we can’t thank them enough for their generosity and support. We wouldn’t have been

able to go on the trip with out all their help.” Elaine, who is originally from Kilkenny, studied in the University of Limerick before moving to Malahide and says she always knew that she wanted to teach. “I had a brilliant science teacher myself when I was in school and knew that that was what I wanted to do. I love teaching and working with kids so I have a dream job! It’s wonderful working in the school, the staff and students are brilliant.” Elaine says she’s had fantastic support from the school and tells us about when her students had to guess what she was involved in: “One of my students thought the big secret was that I was going to be a backing singer for Jedward in the Eurovision!” In her spare time Elaine loves to go to the cinema and different gigs and loves to indulge her active side by doing

things like cycling and loves water sports. “I teach water safety and swimming and have won a few medals here and there for the likes of scuba diving and that. “I’ve always wanted to do the Rose. We always used to go down to Tralee when I was younger so from then on I wanted to do it. I really love what the competition stands for and that it’s very family orientated. I think it really promotes a positive image for Irish women and how capable they are and how we’ve diversified and changed throughout the years, so it’s a fantastic competition to be a part of. It promotes the positive things about women. I’m having so much fun that I’m not even thinking about the outcome but it would mean the world to me to win, I love everything it stands for.”

Chamber Cheque For Prosper Fingal Prosper Fingal was delighted to receive a most generous cheque for â‚Ź2,000 from Fingal Dublin Chamber on Friday last, 4th May. The Chamber has a long association with Prosper Fingal and the excellent work it does for adults with intellectual disabilities in the North County region. This donation was raised through a raffle at a Chamber Dinner and is given with the aim of helping Prosper Fingal Minister, Alan Shatter that cutting the opening hours of the station would enhance the garda presence on the ground and that the only affect would be is that the garda station would not be open to the public after 10pm at night. I have now found out that the station is actually closing an hour earlier at 9pm and that all phone calls will be diverted to Coolock, seven miles away,â€? he said. O’Brien continued, “What is more shocking is that anyone detained by Malahide gardai after 9pm will now have to be transferred to Coolock garda station. This will involve the patrol car and three gardaĂ accompanying the prisoner to Coolock. This flies in the face of the assurances given by government. I was assured that holding cells at Malahide Garda Station would still operate and prisoners would be detained there and not transported to Coolock or other stations. “The safety of people Malahide, Portmarnock and Kinsealy is clearly not a priority for this government. I am encouraging everyone in the community to contact their local government TDs and make it clear that this is totally unacceptable,â€? he concluded.
