A Wheelie Good Time For Skerries The upcoming An Post Rás, which concludes in Skerries on 27th May next, once again represents a wonderful opportunity for the town to showcase it’s many attractions. This will be the seventh consecutive year that the Rás wheels into the seaside town for its final climactic stage. The local committee are hard at work arranging the town’s biggest ever street party to welcome the Rás back to what is now it’s spiritual home. The golden opportunity afforded to the town, as a result of hosting the final day has not been lost on local Chamber President, Martin Scully. He told the County Leader, “From a chamber point of view, the likes of the annual motorcycle races and the staging of the final day of the Rás, have resulted in much welcomed business to the town. It is an ideal way to introduce new people and potential tourists and it also succeeds in keeping the profile of Skerries high,” he said. The fact that the event will be screened on TV is another reason to welcome the Rás. An upbeat Scully said, “The high profile of a small town like Skerries is of immense importance, particularly as we are in the teeth of a recession. Events like the motorcycle races, the Rás and the fact that Skerries was voted “Community of the Year” last year, has catapulted the town to national prominence. Our Tidy Towns committee ensure that we are table toppers every year and we look forward to winning the overall prize soon. The Rás attracts people from all over and what better way to showcase our beautiful restaurants, shops, bars, coffee shops and the natural beauty of our town,” he said. A massive street party will kick off the day at 12.30pm with a range of activities for all ages including street
By Patrick Finnegan games, funfair, farmers’ market stalls, with homemade goodies and crafts, music and dance, facepainting and magic shows. At around 3pm, the crowd on Strand Street will experience the thrills and excitement of the Rás and cheer, as the cyclists race through the town three times, battling it out for the coveted yellow jersey. Over 50 community and volunteer groups and schools will be involved and it is hoped that thousands will once again line the streets for a stirring end to this gruelling round-Ireland race. Visitors are especially welcome to make a real President of Skerries day of it and discover the Chamber of Commerce, charm of this beautiful town. Scully also spoke Martin Scully enthusiastically of plans for a Community Garden in the town. “The Chamber are taking the leasehold of a plot of land from the Council and developing it into a community garden. We are really looking forward to that, which will add greatly to the community spirit of the town.” If the street party this year is as good as in previous years, then Skerries is set for a bonanza in terms of exposure and the sort of positive publicity you can only dream of. As Martin Scully said, “This is an opportunity not to be missed.”
Landmark Premises For Balbriggan Business McNally’s Funeral Home, the well known Balbriggan business has officially opened their new premises on Drogheda Street in the town. The location of the business is on the site of the iconic National Irish Bank in the centre of Balbriggan and is certain to be a boost for businesses in the immediate area. The local heroes are Ben Moriarty, David Deneher, Killian Burke, Andrew Coyle, David Kearney and Alessio Roselli.
Fury At Closure Of Local Clinics Local TD, Clare Daly (SP), has reacted angrily to the decision of the Department of Social Protection to shut the doors of the Community Welfare offices in Malahide and Donabate. An angry Daly, in calling on the Minister to rescind the decision, told the County Leader, Clare Daly TD “Axing the community welfare officer services from Malahide and Donabate, at a time when more people than ever need to
avail of it, is a severe blow to families and individuals in the area and cannot be allowed to proceed. People from Donabate now have to travel to Swords, which does not have the resources to handle the extra workload, while Malahide people will have to go to Kilbarrack to access a service that will only be open for an hour and a half, three mornings a week, is scandalous,” she said. “The state has decided in it’s
wisdom to withdraw these services, when they should be increasing them, There has never been a time when people in these communities needed this service more than now,” she said. She continued: “These Community Welfare services have been in operation for many years and this is a huge blow to residents living in both areas. At a time when unfortunately more people than ever need to access social welfare services, forcing people who have very little income to travel is horrendous.” “This is part of a wider problem of inadequate Social Welfare services across the North County. Forcing people who are unemployed to spend their limited resources on bus and train fares, or petrol going into Swords or the city centre is just not on,” she concluded.

The people of the towns of Skerries, Rush, Balbriggan, Lusk and beyond, have come together to form a fundraising team to support their local RNLI station. “Now, at last we have a f u n d r a i s i n g committee, as opposed to an uncoordinated system which existed before. Egg-citing Hunt In Balbriggan The Children of Balbriggan had the opportunity to take part in the Easter Egg Hunt organised as a fundraiser by the Senior Committee of the Balbriggan Youth Service recently. Eggs were hidden in the windows of participating local shops and businesses along Drogheda Street for the eager kids to find. Great fun was had by all involved as they looked for the chocolate treats. The task was to find the eggs, note down the corresponding number next to the correct business name on an entry form and return it to the Youth Service. A draw was held on April 10th last for all the entries and the lucky winner received a yummy Easter hamper.

Plans For Children’s Hospital For North County By Patrick Finnegan Following a recent front page article in the County Leader, calling for the new Children’s Hospital to be located in the North County, it seems that our proposal may soon become a reality. Broadmeadow Healthcare Group have submitted a proposal to locate the National Paediatric Hospital on a site of 20.2 ha ( 50 acres ) at Lissenhall, Swords. The submission was headed up by Francis Whelan, CEO, Broadmeadow Healthcare Group, who as team leaders, have co-ordinated the Clinical, Planning and conceptual design for this very significant site. Whelan, who is an architect and leading healthcare practitioner hopes to bring the plan to reality. Whelan spoke to the County Leader about the plans for the project. “The key advantages are that it Fran Whelan will be a greenfield site of 50 acres within 600 acres of land highlighted for future development by the County Council, with a vision for a hospital. There will be no need for 15 to 17 storey high rise hospital design. The Lissenhall site proposes 5 to 7 storeys,” he said. He spoke passionately about the need to plan for our children’s healthcare needs for the foreseeable future and in fact, the next 100 years and the great advantages of locating in the North County. The proposed site will be within easy access to the excellent motorway network, 900 metres off M1, with stress free access from all parts of Ireland, with no congested city centre traffic, with no difficult navigation and adequate parking, with over 2000 spaces planned. There will also be an opportunity for a Maternity Hospital with High Risk Maternity unit and adult teaching. It will be well served and accessible to the public transport system with over 10 bus services available and the site adjoins the planned Metro North, creating excellent links to Dublin Airport and City. Perhaps it is time now for Dr Reilly to step up to the mark and give his backing to the location of the hospital in the North County.

It had three races for each class, sailed in moderate northerly winds on Olympic courses set by Race Officer, Neil Murphy. The Laser Radial division was dominated by Malahide Yacht Club sailors, with Derek Sheehan, Ciaran Costello and Darren Griffin heading the rankings.
The outstanding performance on the day was Howth’s Ronan Cull who topped the Laser class with three wins to finish 1st overall ahead of Daragh Peelo and Daragh Sheridan. Malahide Pupils Put Best Feet Forward St. Sylvester’s Infant School, Malahide showed that they know how to travel Green by launching their very first Feet First Friday recently. The pupils, parents and teachers walked en masse to school on the day, with hundreds of school-goers taking to their feet instead of taking the private car on the school journey. The school’s Feet First Friday initiative, will become a weekly event and is part of St.
Sylvester’s Green-Schools Travel Action Plan, which has been put in place to help raise awareness of sustainable travel on the school journey and to make travel to their school healthier and greener. On their Feet First Friday day, the school aimed to reduce traffic congestion at the school gate and to raise awareness of the alternatives to the private car on short school journeys. The school will also take a step closer to achieving their fourth Green Flag from An Taisce for the theme of sustainable travel. St. Sylvester’s Infant School has already achieved three Green Flags for their work on the themes of litter and waste, energy conservation and water conservation and has been doing a great job of informing parents and the wider community of the importance of travelling in a sustainable way.

James, who just started working with the newspaper, is looking forward to bringing the best possible service to the businesses and residents of Balbriggan. “I have strong family ties in Balbriggan, as my parents’ families are from here and I have many friends here too. Working with and says he wanted to go into the sales field, the County Leader means that the community as he loves dealing and interacting with will get this week in, week out and this will people. “Working with people is the best hopefully aid Balbriggan’s fight against the aspect about this job. North County Living by Aine Hannah
Young Blood In Oldtown There could be a new literal translation, but ‘macra’ when I learned Irish meant ‘sons’ and ‘na feirme’ meant ‘farms’, so the collective idea of the organisation’s name meant ‘young farmers’. Happily, although the farming community of North County Dublin may have undergone radical change, its most vibrant social club is thriving again. Since 2009 the North County club has been revitalised with new membership and it has become a focal point for people from 17-35 years of age who share a love of country living. The County Leader caught up with Clodagh Barnwall, an officer of the fledgling club to find out what the 21st century Macra is about. “Macra was only recently reestablished in the North County, so we’re a new little club made up mostly of people from Swords,” she says. “There’s about 20-25 of us who’d meet regularly and there’s something on practically every weekend. The 20-year-old is the club’s current Public Relations Officer, which means she’s keeping not just the current North County members up-to-date on upcoming events, but plays a large role in publicising them to encourage other like-minded people to join in. She organises posters, from designing them to distributing them, gets the word out to local papers and radio stations, updates the club’s facebook page and all that’s just for starters. She’s part of the team that won the Dublin leg of the volleyball competition, is studying for a bachelor’s degree at Maynooth, and works part-time at Kettle’s Country House Hotel in Rolestown. As her degree course is in Music and Geography, she hopes eventually to become a secondary school teacher. She also practises teaching music to hopeful piano-players. “We could be training for a volleyball competition, or rowing in on whatever project we’re focusing on as a club.” She goes on to explain that there are half a dozen other elements to the organisation apart from the expected “agriculture” department. “Not all of our members are from a rural or farming background, some of them are from Dublin city suburbs, some are from the country and came to live here,” she says, adding that the key element of why the club’s growing is that it’s great fun. It’s aims for it’s members are to provide opportunities in projects such as sports, public speaking, performing arts, community involvement and personal development. “Travel’s high on our agenda,” she says of the trips they make within Ireland and abroad, from the European Rally, to the Spring and Autumn seminars. There have been exchanges with similar groups in Canada, Austria and Scotland. Group outings could be just into town (where they recently won the Dublin Volleyball competition), to Kilkenny cheering on Ian Lavery from Treble R (the biggest Dublin club) in April’s Mr Personality festival, to Athboy for the June bank holiday festival where Eilish O’Sullivan’s taking part in the Miss Blue Jeans pageant. In August, Clodagh herself is representing Dublin in Tipperary town’s fiveday Miss Macra festival.
Her enthusiasm for Macra is infectious and you couldn’t help but be impressed at the dynamism of the national network. The clubs in Dublin – Treble Rs, Dublin Mountains, University College Dublin and Dublin Institute of Technology – could field all-Dublin teams for some of the national competitions. Or you could get an ad-hoc scattering of support from across the various Dublin districts if anyone gets a figary to attend the welding competition, the senior debating showdown, or try their luck at what sounds like the ploughing championship for beginners: the Macra farm skills competition. “The farm skills competition is being hosted by Dublin Mountains this year, teams of three could hang a gate, drive a tractor and move bales of hay, that sort of thing, and it’s open to women,” she says. Although raised on a farm herself and is no slouch behind the wheel of a tractor, it’s the self-development and friendship aspect of Macra that attracted her to the club. “I heard about a new club being set up, so I dragged a few friends along as it’s a great way to get to know people.” She was already vaguely familiar with the club, as her parents, Martina and Gerard had been active members in its North County heyday when there were individual clubs in Lusk, Rush and Balbriggan too. Within the first year she had competed in the allIreland bowling. But she surprised herself in other ways too, thanks to the club. “I met new friends, my confidence was boosted, for instance you’d get up and speak in front of people, there’s a lot that’s already organised, the structure’s there for you to focus on what you’re good at.” There are talent competitions in different categories, such as the musical one that had its finale in the National Concert Hall: “Macra’s about supporting you when you face that fear,” she says with a grin, “building up your confidence and channelling it into one or other of the categories of upcoming social events.” The performing arts strand of competitions includes Capers, where entrants perform for 15 minutes, the amateur dramatic competition and straightforward public speaking like the debating contest mentioned earlier. The big drive for fundraising this year was the Be Green, Be Seen in aid of Irish Autism and it raised a whopping €2,000. “We were delighted with the support we got from the sponsors, we couldn’t have done it without them. We’ve done other types of fundraisers before, like we organised the tractor run for the past few years for the Central Remedial Clinic or Irish Guide Dogs – the route around North County Dublin would go up as far as Bellewstown and I’ve even driven a tractor myself on the run – and we’re hoping to create a different fund-raiser in its place.” But for now, Clodagh’s on a mission to invite County Leader readers under 35 years to come down to the Harp Bar in Swords’ Carnegie Court Hotel on the first Thursday of every month to see for themselves what the Macra (and na hIníonigh!) are up to.
“Not all of our members are from a rural or farming background, some of them are from Dublin city suburbs, some are from the country and came to live here.”

ENGLAND Teacher Quits School To Be A Rapper
A Clean Sweep By Balbriggan Youth The Junior Committee of Balbriggan Youth Service took to the streets recently for their Spring Clean project. The Committee wanted to get more involved in their community and saw the National Spring Clean campaign as the perfect way to work as a team to make their community a brighter, cleaner place to live. The day was a great success. They wanted to show how young people could make a difference in the area and worked really hard cleaning the beach, harbour and main street in an effort to involve themselves more in their community and keep things clean. In particular the group would like to say a big thank you to Ray from the County Council, who was a great help throughout the day and they would also like to encourage members of the community to help maintain the upkeep of the seaside town.
An English teacher has quit school for a hip-hop career after beating one of his students in a rap battle. He started by using rap in class to try to get his pupils interested in poetry. Mark Grist is now in a group called Dead Poets, which fuses rap music with poetry and performs at venues nationwide. He still works as a supply teacher when not on tour.
Low Funds For Low Rock The long running saga of Low Rock in Malahide continues, with the news that no provision has been made in the current budget to improve the facilities at the popular swimming area. This was confirmed by the County Council. The local authority did state that repair works of a maintenance nature would be carried out as part of the area engineer’s programme.
As was previously published in a past issue of the County Leader, on an average day as many as forty to fifty people visit Low Rock to swim and, despite the popularity of the swimming point, it’s still not recognised as a official swimming beach. The locals who formed the Low Rock Beach Committee, have been appealing to the council to get adequate funding to make much needed

County Leader, he said he was very disappointed with the news that no funds were to be set aside. “Low Rock is in need of attention and while I welcome the promise of repair works, I believe that the additional enhancements I proposed on behalf of the Low Rock swimmers are very reasonable,” he said. “I believe they would enhance Malahide’s prospects in achieving a Blue Flag and this would get it well on the way to its recognition as an official swimming beach.”

remember to plan well and avoid disappointment.
Plan Your Dream Day Start at the beginning and that means putting all your cards on the
table and deciding what is reasonable and what is out of the question. If you’re going to have a traditional wedding in a church, you would need to see if the date you want if available. This is crucial and you need to be really doing this first. Another thing that
should be high on the priority list is the venue. These things are so important and if they are left on the long finger you could end up being sorry in the end. The big day is something that some people plan for a few years, however others that
may be in different situations and decide to get married within a few months. Whatever way you decide to go make sure you keep your plan of action at hand. Here’s a tip, place a poster of your to-do list in you’re kitchen. You spend time there every day and when your
waiting on the kettle to boil, or your toast to pop you could be making a few phone calls. The kitchen is also a place you can summon your family and decide who is doing what. When handing out jobs for the wedding you have to have everything

covered and consider other people’s feelings. Does your other half have a bigger family than you and maybe they will have more on the alter, If a situation like this arises and you don’t want a big wedding party, make this decision early. These days some
people only go for one bridesmaid and one groomsman. This way you can still have the traditional wedding style without the big fuss. On the other hand if you want to have a lot of family and friends taking part in the ceremony make that decision too.

A Comforting Hand At A Sensitive Time There is no doubt that the most stressful time we encounter in our lives is the death of a loved one. Be it a parent, a child, a family member or a close friend, this encounter with death is unavoidable. When we face the death of someone we love, we face an unspeakable loss. A future is mapped out for us where there will always be a large absence in our lives. In an attempt to minimise the impact of death, it is imperative to employ the service of an experienced and caring funeral director, who will not only provide the basic funeral requirements, but in many cases can provide much needed advice and information on
various counselling and bereavement supports. We need to feel that our great loss is understood and that there is someone capable of understanding and interpreting our precise needs. At this stressful and vulnerable time, McNally’s Funeral and Memorial Services in Balbriggan are ideally positioned to help to relieve you of this onerous burden and give you the complete and comprehensive service your loved one deserves. They know we have helped them in their hour of need and they obviously feel comfortable with us,” he said. As the historic building was in a fairly dilapidated condition when Patrick and Monica took it over last year, it needed major refurbishment and redesign. This was done with great precision and imagination and it now caters for the needs of all. It is capable of holding 100 people in the main funeral room, where the coffin is located. There is also air conditioning and it is fitted with a sound system for both surround sound and microphones for service narration. The funeral room lends itself well to both religious

the old National Irish Bank premises. This iconic building, situated in the heart of Balbriggan, is an ideal location and has given the area a very welcome boost in the process, providing a convenient town centre location for this excellent company. What makes McNally’s Funeral and Memorial Services so different to any other funeral directors.? For starters, they are one of the longest established Funeral Directors in the entire country. They were founded in 1878 by Joseph Sweetman, until his death in 1894. The business was then taken over by James McNally until 1940, and was carried on by his wife, Mary until 1950. Her son, Sean then took over for the next 51 years, until 2001, when he retired. It was then that Patrick Hickey, a native of Balrothery purchased the business and has managed the firm as McNally’s ever since. Patrick, along with his wife, Monica have established a new branch to the business, having opened a Monumental and Memorials side to McNally’s. Their former premises on Market Green served the community of Balbriggan for 11 years. As a curious aside, the historic building on Drogheda Street, now occupied by McNally’s was

built 13 years after the company was established, more than 130 years ago. Patrick and Monica are now celebrating their 11th year in charge of McNally’s. From a staff of two in the beginning, there are now seven employed, five full time and two part time. McNally’s are very particular about their staff. “We only employ staff of the highest calibre. Here we have a very simple motto when employing staff members. If they are not prepared to carry out a service for others, like it was for their own family, then they should not be working for McNally’s. We have caring staff who do the work required, but more importantly, are there before and after for advice and a listening ear. We work as a family for your family,” said Patrick. Staff members include Willie Kenny, Desmond Flynn, Sharon Tolan, Noel Tolan and Desmond Flynn Snr.

Patrick spoke sensitively and caringly about how the company is developing. “ Throughout all these changes, the focus has always been on providing the very best service to the bereaved and the preparation of their deceased loved ones in a caring and professional way. We have also employed the most caring and helpful staff to assist you at ever y turn,” he said. He also emphasised the company’s commitment to being available after the funeral for further help and advice. “Many people drop in for a chat and they

The Millbank Theatre, Rush, presents “Dial M for Murder”, opening on 25th April and running until 19th May inclusive at 8.30pm. Dial M for Murder was a hit on the stage and a successful film, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The plot surrounds British tennis pro, Tony Wendice who suspects that his wealthy wife, Margot is fooling around with handsome American, Max. Tony blackmails a disgraced former army comrade, Captain Lesgate into murdering Margot and making it look like the work of a burglar. But Tony’s carefully mapped-out scheme does not take into account the notion that Margot might fight back and kill her assailant. When Inspector Hubbard investigates, Tony improvises quickly, subtly planting the suggestion that his wife has committed first-degree murder. Make sure you don’t miss out on this gripping drama. It promises to be a deadly night’s entertainment for all.

Skerries Towns innovative ‘Adopt-a-patch’ scheme is going well in its second year of operation. The Tidy Towns committee is very pleased with the response to the second year of the scheme and it has a commitment from most of its volunteers to take on their ‘patches’ again this year. Patches still in need of minders are along the bus route by the re-cycling bins and down past Kelly’s Bay. Extra help is also needed for areas within Kelly’s Bay and Townspark and for lanes off Hillside. Details of the scheme can be found on the flyer available in Supervalu, or contact the committee directly by phoning Frances Owens on 087241 7017.
Council bosses are trying to stop teenagers hanging around street corners - by using special lights that show up their spots. The special acne lights being used in Cardiff give off a pink glow that exaggerates any spots or blemishes on people's faces. Officials hope the lamps will slash the numbers of youths loitering in an area blighted by antisocial behaviour.

The school’s voluntary ‘victims’ had their hair transformed and if this wasn’t enough the staffroom became a hair salon for the day and the remaining staff (and some of their children!) got sprayed, teased and back combed to perfection. All parents and children embraced the idea so the schoolyard was a vision to behold with over 500 crazy hair dos! They also celebrated with a Crazy Hair Shake and Wake which went down a treat. As well as that, two brave dads agreed to be shaved in front of their sons’ classes. All in all, it was a very hair-raising experience for the school!

They discovered that 35% of their participants were super-tasters which is significantly higher than the European average, concluding that there is a strong association between being a super-taster and having a specific preference for a certain brand of tea.

Portmarnock School Wins Credit Union Quiz A palpable air of tension and excitement hung over the main hall of the RDS on 1st April last, as 100 teams of four schoolchildren from across the country battled it out in the grand final of the 21st All Ireland Credit Union Schools Quiz. Under the watchful eye of Marty Whelan,
quiz master for the day, St Helen’s Primary School from Portmarnock emerged joint winners in the Competition A (up to 11 years age category). Over the past six months, 25,000 children from all over Ireland took part in knock out stages at local and regional level in an effort to win a chance at competing at the national finals. That 25,000 was eventually whittled down to the 400 (100 teams of 4) who competed in the RDS. President of the ILCU, Jimmy Johnstone said: “A big congratulations to St Helen’s Primary School, who fought hard to become joint winners in Competition A. We are delighted to be here marking the 21st year of the quiz which has been our biggest yet.”

Swords School Top Battery Recyclers Swords Educate Together has been named as the top participating North County school in the recent Go Recycle and Win Competition. The competition was run by ERP, Ireland’s only pan-European compliance scheme for electrical and electronic waste and waste battery recycling. The competition set the challenge to primary schools around the country to collect over one million batteries, with each school given a target based on the number of students in the school. Swords Educate Together had the highest collection rate in Fingal with each
student collecting an average of 1.8kg – the equivalent of over 100 AA batteries each! Almost 11,000 batteries were collected in total by the school which contributed to the collection target of one million batteries being exceeded by the participating schools around the country. In fact, enough batteries were collected to stretch from Swords to Bray! As the winning local school, Swords Educate Together were presented with a trophy and €250 book voucher by County Mayor, Cllr. Gerry McGuire. School principal, Fiona Rushe, said “The Go Recycle and Win competition was an effective and engaging way of educating our students about the importance of recycling, and they had great fun participating. We are delighted to be named local winners of the competition!”

Proprietor, David O’Reilly spoke about the company’s long history of providing top of the range products. “The company was founded in 1967 by my parents and we have been at our present location for the last eight years. We specialise in glass and glazing, which is our core business, particularly double glazed units. We concentrate mainly, but not exclusively, on the domestic market. Other companies focused on the commercial market and forgot about the domestic market, which led to their downfall in many cases,” he said. Products which the company specialises in include, glass panels for external and internal doors, stained glass, fanlights, decorative leaded glass panels, fused glass tiles for internal and external doors. They also cater for precut and custom mirrors, tabletops, glass shelving and glass splashbacks in a variety of colours. David said, “We manufacture an extensive range of glass countertops and glass splashbacks for use in kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, feature walls, table tops and shelving. They are available in a wide range of colours. They are extremely durable, low maintenance, easy to clean and are heat resistant to 200°C. We supply and fit.” He continued, “We have a large range of mirrors,

including bathroom and over mantle mirrors - all of which are keenly priced. We also make a lot of glass table tops, which are proving to be very popular. We also do a lot of traditional and reproduction stained glass for use in internal and external doors. Our older clientele seem to prefer stained glass windows,” said David. The moment you enter the large reception area, there is a display of beautiful mirrors and stained glass units to admire. The very
extensive workshop area is a hive of activity, as new units are prepared for customers. There are eight staff members employed, all specially trained - three glazers, two general operatives and two stained glass artists, along with David himself, all of whom are kept busy all of the time. Dedication is a key to success for the company. “Our service sets us apart from other glazing companies. We provide a top class service with three dedicated vans on the road. Our after
sales service is second to none. We don’t let our customers down, which is part of the reason we are the largest provider of glass products in the North Leinster area. We pride ourselves in being one of Ireland’s most prominent glass and glazing specialists,” he said.

Mary Fitzgerald- Swords Mary Fitzgerald from Swords is next up, hoping to take home the Dublin Rose of Tralee title. The lovely 20 year old is feeling a little nervous as she sits down to chat about the competition as her nomination was a total surprise. “My dad put me forward and I hadn’t a clue so I was a bit shocked when I got the call,” she told the County Leader. Mary lives at home with her parents and has three brothers, one sister and is
the baby in the family. She went to Holy Family and then onto Fingal Community College here in Swords, and is currently taking some time out from college, where she is studying Drama to focus on working and enjoy the Rose of Tralee festivities. “I’ve always loved acting and the whole business so it seemed a natural thing to focus on in college.” Mary has immersed herself in various acting groups; she attended the Gaiety School of Acting in Malahide and is currently an Assistant Stage
Manager with the Milbank Theatre in Rush. “I really enjoy the whole production side of things. I’m also planning to do a course in Theatrical Makeup which should be brilliant as well. I think it’s great to get a handle on all sides of the industry as I’m definitely looking to persue a career in the field in the future.” Mary has been involved in drama and performing from an early age. She attended Billy Barry Stage School and when she was seven years old, got a role in a Swedish movie, which was shot here in Dublin. “It was an absolutely fantastic experience, but as I was so young I didn’t appreciate it at the time. I had to wear this really heavy costume and shoot scenes with three boys, which I hated doing at the time,” she says laughing. “I had other offers afterwards but I was too young and didn’t want to persue things further until I was older.” Acting
seems to run in the family as Mary’s brother has also been involved in a few projects, most notably the hit series, ‘The Tudors.’ Mary and her mother Maureen are heavily involved in the Chernobyl charity. “I did a lot of work with my mother, who has been working with the charity for years. I would get involved in all the charity events and balls that they have, particularly when I was younger. They’re a great charity to work with.” Mary says that even though she was slightly taken aback by the surprise nomination, it would be amazing to be crowned the Dublin Rose: “It would really be brilliant to be crowned,” she said. “It would be something completely different and I’d get to meet lots of new people as well. It would be brilliant to have the experience to travel. I’m just going to enjoy being involved in the competition regardless of the outcome though,” she concluded.
Amie Doyle- Lusk Twenty four year old Amie Doyle from Lusk is next up for the Dublin Rose of Tralee. As she sits down to chat with us, it’s obvious that Aime is hugely excited to be involved with the festival this year. “It’s my second time around,” she says smiling. “I was nominated by my family last

year but I couldn’t attend all the selection nights because of my job. So this time around, I want to be able to fully enjoy the festival and all the selection nights.” Amie attended Lusk Primary school and went onto Skerries Community College before attending college. After school, she went to a college on Grafton Street and did the Beauty Therapy course and following this, went on to do a course in Fashion Theatre and Media Make Up. "I always loved the creative aspect of school. Art, Speech and Drama, anything creative I wanted to do it. The transition to doing the beauty therapy was really natural for me as it's also creative and I've a l w a y s wanted to do it." Amie's one of four in the family and has a dog called Pepper. Her sister Grace also loves the R o s e festival.
Rosie Nixon - Rush Rosie Nixon from Rush is our next entry for the Dublin Rose of Tralee. The lovely 23 year old is thoroughly looking forward to entering the Rose festivities this year after her mother convinced her it would be a good thing to do: “We talked it over and I thought it would be a great festival to get involved with,” she said. “So I’ve just decided to go for it and enjoy the competition.” Rosie is the youngest of four siblings; she has two brothers and one sister and lives in Rush with her parents. She attended Rush National School and then went on to Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan. It was here that she was able to express her creative side which led her to taking up a Photography course in DIT afterward. “I’ve always been interested in the artistic side of things,” she told the County Leader. “I loved Art in school and I was always interested in things like singing. I was involved in the school musicals and the choir too. Then I did a couple of Art Portfolio courses before attending college. Photography always interested me so I decided to give it a go.” Though she is currently taking a gap year to focus on working, Rosie said the college course gave her a good idea of what to expect in the industry. “I
enjoyed it at first, though it was a lot more restrictive then I originally thought it would be. I wanted to have more freedom in terms of what I could create so I decided to take the year out to really see which area I wanted to focus on.” Rosie currently works at Rush Credit Union, who are also sponsoring her for the festival this year. “I’ve been working there for quite a few years, it’s a great place to work. It would be lovely to represent them at the festival as they really serve the community of Rush.” An upbeat Rosie eagerly goes on to say how she is participating in this year’s Mini Marathon, something she’s never attempted before. “I’ve always wanted to do it and just thought I would finally give it a go this year. I’ve started my ‘training’ for it already but reckon I’ll be walking, not running on the day!” Rosie is doing the marathon all in aid of Cystic Fibrosis and be very appreciative of any support. You can log onto: www.mycharity.ie/event/ roise_nixon_minimarathon/ if you’d like to sponsor her. The rose hopeful enjoys some traditional pastimes as hobbies. “I love baking and am currently learning how to knit,” she says, laughing.
"I think she'd definitely love to do the festival in the future." The bright Lusk lady has just ventured out and recently opened her own business, a beauty salon called 'Álainn' (meaning 'beautiful' in Irish) in Rush, which she is feeling very positive about. "I decided to take the plunge three months ago and just get things up and running," she said. "It's early days yet, but its going very well. I'm just enjoying everything and trying to get as many contacts established as possible." Amie has always been interested in persuing beauty therapy for her career and loves having her own business. "I've been doing this for six years and opening my own salon is always something I wanted to do, I
just wasn't sure when I'd have the opportunity. So when the chance came up, I just took it straight away." It's a fantastic achievement, especially as Amie is as young as she is. Amie will be using Álainn as her sponsor for this year’s Rose. "I wasn't going to use the company initially, but as I'm just starting out, I think it would be a great way to get people familiar with the salon. All the products used are 100 per cent organic and I cover a range of treatments from Tan to Make Up, Nails, Facials and Waxing. " Amie does a lot of work with the charity Console, which focuses on Suicide Prevention. "I did a sky dive for them last year which raised €3,000. It was great fun, though I
“My mother has always been doing it, so I got some tips off her. It’s just something that I really enjoy doing.” Speaking about the Rose competition, Rosie said just to have the experience of doing it would be brilliant: “I’m just planning to really enjoy myself and have fun. It would be incredible to be crowned the Dublin Rose, but what I’m really hoping is that the contest will give me a firmer direction of where I want to go.” She finishes off by saying that her motto in life is to just be yourself: “To be yourself and just be happy is the best advice you can give to someone I think. So that’s exactly what I plan to do for the Rose; just be myself and have fun.” was terrified at the time," she says, laughing. "I also would love to go and volunteer in Africa with some of the Roses next year." Amie is even more excited to be involved in the Rose festivities this year and says that her reasons for entering the contest are still the same: "I've always wanted to be involved in the Rose, since I was very young. It's a big tradition in my house and we watch it every year. I had a ball last year and made great friends so I'm looking forward to really giving it my all this year. It would mean the world to me to be crowned the Dublin Rose but first off, it's all about getting involved and having fun so that's what I plan to do."

Hope For Return Of Fry Model Railway Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG) and Malahide councillor Anthony Lavin remain hopeful that the Fry Model Railway Museum will return to Malahide. Following the most recent discussions with the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar TD, Farrell said that, “Cllr Lavin and I have engaged fully with the minister on this issue, to ensure that he is completely aware of dual benefit to housing the Fry Model Railway Museum in the historical Casino building. “We have gone to great lengths at every level to ensure that those
responsible for the future of the museum understand the unique options available to them to protect the future of both the museum and the Casino, thanks to the vision and generosity of a local donor, the late Michéal Gaffney. Lavin addressed the frustration of the situation, both as a councillor and a resident of Malahide, and said, “The Casino is an ideal location for the Railway Museum, and I believe its proximity to the DART station will encourage visitors of Malahide Castle to come towards the village for the benefit of local business and retailers. Farrell concluded by saying, “I hope that the board of Fáilte Ireland and CIE will review this truly unique situation and allow the display to come home to Malahide.”
Skerries Group Goes From Strength To Strength The hugely successful Community Harvest Group in Skerries is moving into its second year and looking to recruit new members for a successful 2012 growing season. Supporting locally and sustainably grown food, the Community Harvest Group started as a Sustainable Skerries project in 2010. Speaking to the County Leader, a group spokesperson said: “When it comes to sustainability and food, we feel it is all about having access to local sources of sustainable
food. As consumers, it is about us knowing where and how our food has been grown and that it is grown in a way that supports a healthy future for our families.” The Community Harvest Group is a community supporting agriculture initiative. When you join the group, every week during the growing season, May to December 2012, members receive a box of organic, locally grown, seasonal produce at the Skerries Farmers Market. As a member, you will pay a
monthly fee in advance so that the farmer has a secure market for his food. You will know where and how your food is grown, who grows it, and have the opportunity to visit the farm on member days. If you so wish, you can even help with the harvest and give you and your family an opportunity to take part in the growing process. A newsletter will be sent regularly keeping you involved in the happenings on the farm, sharing recipes, information on the vegetables and so on.

Inaugural Meeting Of Labour’s Malahide Branch The Labour Party’s new Malahide branch formally convened recently with the newly elected Chairperson, Susan Lohan declaring that “we are truly excited that Malahide now has a Labour branch of its own”. The new branch has been officially announced not long after the recent meeting of over 100 Labour Party supporters in the Grand Hotel, Malahide. It was addressed by Tánaiste and Party Leader, Eamon Gilmore. Lohan explains,
“Originally, Labour Party members from Malahide and Portmarnock shared both a constituency and branch. But when Portmarnock’s ‘Jack Clarke’ branch was changed to the Dublin North East constituency, it was decided that the interests of the communities would be better served by two separate branches”. The Malahide branch looks forward to liaising with the community and local representatives, Brendan Ryan TD, Cllr Peter Coyle and Cllr Cian O’Callaghan to address local issues such as the relocation of the Fry Model Railway and the after-hours closing of Malahide Garda Station, while at the same time promoting Labour policies of a national level.

Second Police Forum Meeting In Balbriggan The Balbriggan Community Policing Forum second public meeting for 2012 will be brought forward and will be held one month earlier than scheduled on Monday 23rd April from 8pm to 9.30pm in the Town Hall in Balbriggan. Many residents of Balbriggan are very concerned over the increase in break-ins to both private and residential properties in the area in particular over the past few weeks. Public meetings are attended by An Garda Siochana, and action is taken on the issues that are brought up at the meetings and feedback is given by the County Council at the follow on meeting.

'Dead' Woman Climbs Out Of Coffin A 95-year-old grandmother terrified her neighbours in China by climbing out of her coffin six days after she 'died'. The 'dead' woman was laid in her coffin ahead of the funeral, but the day before the funeral the coffin was found empty. Neighbours found her in the kitchen cooking. "I slept for a long time and felt hungry. I pushed the lid for a long time to climb out." Sponsorship packs will begin to be collected on April 25th and all support is greatly appreciated.
