It’s A Sham!

Democracy Has Failed For Lusk Residents

A huge demonstation of people power was evident in Swords last Saturday, as residents from all over the North County came out in force to protest against the proposed new Monster Sewage Plant. It was the largest protest Swords has seen for many years, and brought the town to a complete standstill.

By Patrick Finnegan Chairman of Lusk Waste Watch group, Gary Browne was delighted with the turnout and said, "this is only the tip of the iceberg in relation to the objections that the people of the North County. The County Council should be serving the people, but instead they are shafting the people. They have declined an invitation from Lusk Waste Watch group to listen to their views and proposals.” There is a sense of great anger and frustration in Lusk over the County Council’s perceived arrogant and dismissive attitude towards residents over the possible siting of the proposed new Monster Sewage Plant near the village. Members of the Lusk Waste Watch group met with the County Leader to explain how their submissions and questions remain unanswered by the local authority. A sense of anger was palpable, as committee members, Brian Arnold, Valerie Belton, Gary Browne and Lorcan O’Toole vented their frustration and disbelief at the ‘arrogance of the council’. “They did not want us to know what was going on and used media with low circulation figures and ones that had no penetration in the area to notify the public of upcoming information meetings. At the first non-statutory Public Consultation in May last year, a total of 58 people turned up.” “The entire community of Lusk was left unaware of

what was going on. Nobody knew about the meeting. It was only when Cllr Ken Farrell got involved and started contacting people by text that the figures increased. It’s not in their (the Council) interest to inform people of the North County about the process. Indeed, the less people that know the better,” said Gary Browne. He also spoke of the “arrogance and insulting manner in which members of the consultation team dealt with people who probed too deeply for their liking.” Valerie Belton spoke about the lack of feedback from the process of submissions. “You just get an acknowledgement that they have received your submission, but you don’t know what impact it has had. They don’t say that, because of this or that submission received, we’ve decided to make the following changes. The Council emphasise that the submissions are non-statutory and that you’re lucky to get them. We don’t know whether we’re getting a fair hearing or not,” she said. The group insist that democracy has taken a back seat

Historic Day For Malahide It was a very special time for Malahide recently, when two of it’s citizens were ordained to religious ministries. Paul Ludden was ordained a priest at St Sylvester’s Church in Malahide by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin and is the first priest of the class of 2012 to be ordained this year. The second ordination is somewhat more unusual, in that Steve Maher was ordained as a permanent deacon. Malahide resident, Steve was one of eight people to be ordained to Permanent Diaconate in the country. While permanent deacons minister in other European countries, this is the first group to be ordained to the diaconate in

Ireland. Formation to the Diaconate involves four years of preparation for ordained ministry, which includes academic study, spiritual, human and pastoral formation. In fact, he was honoured to be one of two deacons who were chosen to assist Papal Legate, Cardinal Marc Ouellette to celebrate Mass at Croke Park last Sunday to mark the end of the International Eucharistic Congress. Permanent deacons can be married or single, but if they are ordained as single men, then they must abide by the laws of celibacy. Steve, a married man said he was “very happy to have reached this stage and am looking forward to the

in the entire process. Valerie Belton asked, “Where is our local democracy? We made our case, but the project team are the judge and jury here. Democracy seems to be ignored here.” Lorcan O’Toole said, “This has been enforced by unelected individuals, who have no connection with the area. The local authority built a big glass vanity project in the middle of a park in Swords and now want to build a concrete monstrosity in the heart of a horticultural and archaeologically sensitive area.” Brian Arnold was incensed that the Council were not connecting with Fingal Tourism and other interested bodies to save the identity of the area. “They have lost credibility with the community in their actions. The whole idea of having a load centre in the area that has nothing to do with us is preposterous. The Council says they need to work with us, but it’s a complete sham. The one basic message here is that it ain’t coming to Lusk and that’s the clear message from the people of

challenges ahead.” The new deacon is a married man with three daughters and, as of last week, a granddaughter. This is his first grandchild, so there has been great excitement. Steve is retired from Aer Lingus where he worked for 36 years, mainly in sales. During his 36 year term he worked in Dublin, Belfast and France. He spent 10 years in France from 1974-1984 and then returned to Dublin in 1985. He now does some tour guiding around Ireland. One of Steve’s great loves is Sunshine House in Balbriggan, which he has been involved with for the last 25 years. He also enjoys the odd game of golf. John Deegan from Sunshine House in Balbriggan was delighted with the news of Steve’s ordination. He told the County Leader: “It’s a great achievement for Steve. He was very much involved in the improvements and maintenance side of things and really devoted a lot of time to that. He was bitten by the Sunshine bug all those years ago and has stayed on ever since. Like some here, he’s a part of the furniture now and is still

Lusk,” he said. Perhaps the greatest bone of contention among protesters is that they claim not one house north of Dublin Airport will be serviced by this new plant. The local waste is treated locally. “I live 500 yards from the proposed new site and I have to process my own waste and pay for it as well,” said Lorcan O’Toole. Gary Browne spoke of the hardship imposed on the residents of Lusk and said that “the population here are sacrificial lambs for that the Council are planning to do for other local authorities. We don’t have any faith in the consultation process. They’re trying to get people to buy into the process, by being soft and sensitive, but it’s just a sham. They’re hell bent on building the plant and are just fobbing us off and spending a fortune in the process. They don’t listen and there’s no evidence that this will change anytime soon, based on submissions they received. Confusion and a lack of communication suits them,” he said.

involved with us today. We wish him well,” he said. Meanwhile, Fr. Ludden (34) is the youngest of a family of four. Before entering the seminary in Maynooth he studied Business the Institute of Technology in Mountjoy Square and Athlone. He worked for four years in Discount Electrical in Mountjoy Square in Dublin. He told the County Leader, “I applied for the priesthood following a time of serious personal Malahide's new pastors. Pictured are Fr. Indeed he helped to bring this day to fruition, when is a very accomplished snooker player Holy Orders were conferred on me by and achieved recognition as an amateur Archbishop Martin. Salts Harvested From Human Tears A range of salts said to have been collected from human tears has gone on sale in London. The suppliers said the salts come from crying humans experiencing a range of emotions. The range includes salts harvested from tears of sorrow, tears shed while sneezing, tears shed while chopping onions, tears of laughter, and tears of anger. Each salt has a distinctly different flavour.

Blue Flag Success For Our Beaches There was some mixed news for our North County beaches as Blue Flags were awarded recently. In what is a fantastic achievement, a total of four prestigious Blue Flags were given to Portmarnock, Skerries, Donabate and Portrane. Last year we got two of these for Portmarnock and Portrane, which means we went up by two extra wins this year. Skerries and Donabate got flags for the first time since 1995 and 2007 respectively. Elsewhere, Rush failed to qualify for a flag due to poor water quality. Unfortunately Malahide also did not receive a Flag, because the designated beach at the estuary is regarded as unsafe, and there is always a Red Flag carried on the Lifeguards’ hut. However, on a positive note, they achieved a Green/Clean Coast Award, thanks to the input also by the local Low Rock support community group. There is a call to have Low Rock as the ‘designated’ beach. This is the more popular location for year-round swimmers. However officials argue that there is a safety problem for the general public at this location because of the rocks. It’s an issue that the community are constantly trying to resolve. It is a tremendous achievement that so many of our North County beaches were awarded with highly coveted Blue Flags and we’ve no doubt that those who missed out this year will get them in the future. Pictured at the awards ceremony at Portmarnock Links Hotel, where Portmarnock retained it's Blue Flag status are Cllr Peter Coyle, County Manager David O'Connor, County Mayor Gerry McGuire, Florence McElroy, Angela O'Flynn-Barry, Marie O'Brien and Minister for Environment, Phil Hogan

Yet despite the fear of losing our sight, we are hesitant to have our eyes examined on a regular basis. Swords Eye Centre, located in the Plaza Shopping Centre in Swords is ideally positioned to help address the most common problems that affect our eye health. Optometrist, Joe O’Sullivan has no doubt that problems with the retina are commonplace and feels that early detection is vital.

With this in mind, Joe has your retina in one panoramic acquired a new Optomap image. Most children have healthy eyes, but your eyes can be an indicator of the state of your health. Signs of diseases like diabetes can show on the retina. Having an Optomap has clearly given Swords Eye Centre a distinct advantage over other eye care centres. “We have the Optomap since last February and we’re the fourth place in the Republic to have this machine. The other three are located in a hospital, a university and an eye care centre in Galway,” said Joe. The importance of this new technology cannot be exaggerated. Swords Eye Centre dates back to 1999, when they were originally located directly above their present location in the Plaza. Joe explained about the wide range of products which the practice carries. “We are the only outlet in Swords to sell Gucci, Hugo Boss, Max Mara, Police and many more. We have also just taken on Swarovski, Givenchy and Giorgio Armani. We also carry more keenly priced, non-designer eyewear, like two for €99, which represents excellent value for money.” The friendly staff includes Valerie Gavin, the friendly and extremely helpful Practice Manager who is there to answer your queries regarding eye care, while technician, Gary Boylan is at the ready to produce glasses and make any alterations you may require. Other staff members Betty Kelly, Liz Kelly and Niamh Colgan complete the team. Among other quality products on sale at Swords Eye Centre are all types of top quality contact lenses, including daily disposable ones from less than €1 per day. “Indeed, some of the eye doctors refer their clients to us and we have people coming to us from abroad, including a lady from Denmark, who times her holidays in Ireland to take in a visit to us to get her glasses,” said Joe.

“We have won the Customer Service Award from Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce on two separate occasions, which was a great boost to us,” said Joe. “We also have our own glazing laboratory, where we produce our own glasses. We offer a one hour service if the lenses are in stock. The quality control is ours and not controlled by others. This means that we can produce a quality finished product to our own exacting standards,” he said. Swords Eye Centre also supplies all types of spectacle lenses, including single vision, bifocal, varifocal, high index, which are cosmetically thinned to enhance their look, as well as other kinds of lenses. “We also supply safety glasses, sports glasses and sunglasses, both designer and non-designer. It is clear that eye health is a good indicator of overall health. A visit to Swords Eye Centre represents an opportunity to avail of cutting edge technology, like the Optomap, to ensure that the most precious gift we have is looked after in a most professional manner. A visit here comes highly recommended.

Transfer Of Old Golf Course Lands Welcomed Local councillor, Peter Coyle (Lab) has been informed that the old Malahide golf course lands above Seapark Hill are expected to be transferred to the County Council within the next month. The lands in question were formerly in the ownership of Mark Developments and Daly McCabe. However, with the recent downturn and intervention from NAMA, there was a major delay in transfer. According to Coyle, these lands are important for two reasons. Firstly, they will form an important amenity in a high location with splendid views of the Irish Sea on one side, and the Dublin mountains on the other. Secondly, the site of the proposed new reservoir at Seamount is included. The provision of this important reservoir was delayed due to the delay in land transfer. It is hoped that the tender for this project will go ahead shortly. There will be much local relief that the lands, which have been left derelict since its operation as a golf course, can now be developed as a popular managed public amenity.

For many people, the kitchen is considered the “heart” of the home. It is the gathering place of your family and should be a place that is functional, inviting and comfortable. But to give your kitchen a new feel you don’t need to spend lots of time and money on a big project. Here are a few creative ideas that can help change your kitchen: Choose a bright new colour for your kitchen. Paint is a great inexpensive way to really change the look of a room. You can paint your cupboards too. Fronts of dishwashers and refrigerators are easily replaceable. Most manufacturers offer several colours, or you can have fronts made to match your cabinets. A wonderful way to set the mood in a kitchen is with lighting. Place a small lamp on your counter if space allows. No counter space? Try a dimmer switch. However make sure you have plenty of natural light and perhaps install bigger windows. Get creative with knobs and handles. Changing them is very easy and there are many styles to choose from.

If you really think about it, there are many things that can make even the bathroom be prepared for those Summer improvements. Maybe it’s time to change that old, dirty matt that you step on after you’ve taken a shower. Change it into a colourful spongy matt that doesn’t absorb water and is very easy to clean. You can repaint the walls into bright colours and maybe even add a picture or two. You’ll soon see how much more enjoyable and relaxing it is to take a shower around a pallet of colours. It will surely make you feel the sense of summer. Having everything in it’s place in your bathroom it makes life easier and you can also use your time wisely. Remember keep it simple and clutter free, especially if you have a small bathroom. You will want to use minimalism in your plans and keep everything in its place. A nice plant or two can add to that fresh

feeling and give your bathroom a sense of life and colour, not to mention fragrance.

Dust Down The Walls The first thing people look at when entering a home is the point most obvious to eye level, this would be of course, the walls. Playing perhaps the biggest part in any home to accentuate warmth or to cool the internal temperature from accentuating brightness to portraying a love of nature and the wilderness, the four walls of our humble abodes are providing the most infinite of possibilities for decorative endeavours. Everyone knows about the paint mixing desk in any local and major DIY shop which opens up a further range of colourful possibilities. The old reliable wallpaper opens up the options for a more decorative look and comes handy as an already, on-a-roll, printed pattern. As with the freedom of lino, wallpaper comes in so many varieties, including borders and other additional decorations that the the expanse for ideas is furthered even more so.

Limitless in choice of colour and style, thickness and patterns, carpeting remains the ever traditional flooring option. The great aspect that remains about carpeting is that carpets can do so much to reflect a person’s persona. Carpet can accentuate a naturally lit room or brighten up a children’s bedroom providing bright primary colours or complex patterns for the living room. Taking advice from an experienced carpet fitter or an expert in flooring is a must as few can carpet a stairwell as well as the professionals. Similarly one should invest time to consider a trip to a carpet shop and browse the wide selection of carpets available to the discerning shopper. It will end up as a worthwhile trip in your efforts to enhance your home.

With such a great proven track record taking care of teams from junior to senior level, David was approached by the by the FAI with a view to taking up the position as Consultant Chef with the Irish senior international team. Travel is not new to David, as his debut was under Brian Kerr’s reign as Irish manager when he travelled to the World Cup tie in Israel and more recently with Steve Staunton’s team. Having been ever present throughout the Trapattoni era, he is very comfortable with his role travelling to hotels in advance of the team’s arrival to ensure all systems are in place prior to the team’s arrival. This means a lot of

Make A Fashion New Hearing Centre In Balbriggan Statement In Print Summer is here at last and Summer style is all about individuality so with this in mind, Littlewoods Ireland has something so suit all shapes, tastes and budgets this season. Taking inspiration from the catwalks around the world, they has created collections for summer with their own brand labels, such as Love Label, South and Teatro – so there is definitely something for everyone, no matter what your shape or size. From animal to Aztec, quirky prints are a must this summer and are a great way to inject some fun into your look. Aztec prints have taken the fashion world by storm so embrace the trend and show off your curves in the Love Label Aztec Print Bodycon Dress (pictured).

Balbriggan residents will have access to free comprehensive hearing assessments and advice thanks to the launch of Specsavers Balbriggan hearing centre. The new hearing service run by qualified hearing aid dispenser Jeff Walbran MISHAA, will offer customers free comprehensive hearing checks and assessments as well as information and advice on the wide range of hearing aids available. He has more than 17 years’ experience in hearing care and has been a member of staff at Specsavers since 2007. “I’m really excited about bringing a new level of healthcare to the people of Balbriggan. Unlike sight loss, hearing loss is a gradual process that may not be noticed until significant loss of aural awareness has occurred. Hearing tests can be as important as eye tests and regular

checks are recommended,” he said. The hearing centre boasts hi-tech facilities and sells quality hearing aids at great value-for money prices.

Hearing tests at Specsavers are free, without obligation and are carried out using the latest computerised technology. All Specsavers digital
