Marvellous Margaret Wins World Title Again

T

o become a world champion is a truly wonderful achievement, but to do so twice is a sure sign of pure quality and class. This incredible feat has been achieved by Swords woman, Margaret Rooney, who successfully defended her Ladies World Cup Trout Angling Championship.

By Patrick Finnegan Margaret, from River Valley, who won the title on Lough Mask in Co. Mayo recently was absolutely chuffed about her extraordinary achievement and spoke to the County Leader about what it means to her. “Winning it twice is unbelievable and is such an honour, especially in the World Cup. It’s brilliant and I feel my luck has definitely changed,” she enthused. “I had the assistance of two kings of Lough Mask in the form of boatmen who knew every inch of the lake and where the fish were likely to be. Lough Mask, being so large is regarded as a difficult lake in which to capture fish.” She continued, “I caught two beautiful wild brown trout, weighing a total of

3.51 kilos - real beauties, to land the ‘Best Lady Angler’ award. The fish were caught over a depth of between 100 and 150 feet. She paid tribute to local man, Murt Kelly, who gave her invaluable advice. “He checked my fly box and picked out a beautiful Golden Olive Brumbe and he told me to keep it on all day, which I did, to great success. I had three tugs on the line and ended up with two fish,” said a thrilled Margaret, who is a member of both Gormanston and District and Broadmeadows Angling clubs. The prize she received was a beautiful five piece Greys 10 foot rod and free entry into next year’s competition, worth €150 alone. She also received vouchers from shops in nearby Ballinrobe. Margaret loves all aspects of her hobby, but emphasised that she does not fish just to catch something. “I love to enjoy nature and for the camaraderie of all the great fishing people and enjoying the craic. Fishing is the ‘Best Forget it All’ pastime in the Ladies World Fly Fishing Champion, world. Its a wonderful sport and I just love it,” a proud Margaret concluded. Margaret Rooney.

Balbriggan Gets All Jazzed Up By Eoin Ronayne Venues across Balbriggan played host to a variety of Jazz musicians as part of Autumn Jazz on Sunday, September 11th last. The celebration of Jazz music and Art was warmly received in the town. Not to be outdone by the Skerries Soundwaves Festival, Balbriggan presented four fantastic gigs across the town. The Gypsy Jazz duo of Patrick Collins and Drazen Derek began proceedings in Molly’s Coffee Gallery on Bridge St. and would have had anyone believe they’d been transported to New Orleans, and that Louis Armstrong could walk in any minute to join in on the gig. The Laveer Restaurant in the Bracken Court Hotel then hosted Balbriggan jazz regulars, 3dB. This trio impressed the audience with their mellow bass, rhythmic beats and wonderfully improvised guitar.

Skerries resident, Luba Rodzhuk, won the 'Best Dressed lady' competition at Irish Derby night in Shelbourne Park on Saturday 10th September last. She said she was quite surprised as she 'had not even entered the competition' so her elegant dress sense and beauty was spotted by a keen eye on the night. Dave McClune, the band’s drummer, who forms the trio along with Darren Rooney on bass and Barr Leahy on guitar told the County Leader. “Well we’ve started to gather a bit of an underground following. We’ve been playing gigs in Molly’s for a while now, and have had a great response to the music. All going well, hopefully this will be made into an annual event.” The Humbuckers were then the second band to play in Molly’s at four and finally, the Tommy Halferty trio played an evening performance in the Laveer restaurant. The day of Jazz was a huge success in Balbriggan, and should inspire more people to seek out these wonderful gigs.

Open Day At Balbriggan Meals On Wheels Balbriggan Meals on Wheels held an Open Day at their base on Hampton Street, Balbriggan on Tuesday 13th September last. They provide a nutritional and social service which has served the community of Balbriggan since 1976. They are providing approximately 70 meals every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to people in Balbriggan, Balrothery, Balscadden and Man O War. The food is freshly prepared and cooked in the purpose built kitchen in the Parish Centre on Hampton Street. It is ably supervised by Helen Davis, who has volunteers and three CE staff. “Our meals are for people who, for one reason or another, are unable to cook for themselves. It is not means tested, there are no questions asked and there is a voluntary contribution, only if you can afford it,” said Colette Brangan, treasurer of the organisation. They receive funding from HSE for the part-time co-ordi-

By Roxana Neag nator and a portion of the meals costs, but they have to raise the balance of funding themselves. The traditional Meals on

3 Wheels service has expanded with the opening of the Dinner Club, which is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. “We are able to transport people from their homes if they wish so.” They urgently need more volunteers to help them, either one hour a week, one hour a month. “We are looking for volunteer drivers on any of the above days to do the deliveries and we need also volunteers to help in the kitchen with the preparation of the food.”

Massive Local Support For Monaghan Family There has been a massive groundswell of support from the North County and Swords in particular for the plight of Louise Monaghan. The Swords mother, whose six year old daughter, May was abducted by her ex husband, has been reunited with her daughter in Syria. The negotiations to have May returned to her home in Cyprus are ongoing and at a delicate stage, at the time of going to press. Everyone can identify with the anguish that a family endures when a child is abducted. It is every family's dread, more so when it occurs on foreign soil. Young May Assad Monaghan was taken from her home in Limassol, Cyprus, where Louise works as a travel representative, but now faces a struggle to get her out of the war-torn country. Determined Louise travelled to Syria, and succeeded in meeting her daughter, but fears still exist regarding her safety in the unstable country. The little girl was snatched by Louise's

estranged husband, Mostafa Assad, and taken to his hometown of Idlib. She met him at the Turkish border and has since been reunited with young May at his family's home. A father enjoys automatic custody rights over his children under Syrian law. Louise’s sister, Mandy, said she now feared for her sister and little niece. She believes the kidnapping stunt is an attempt to force a reunion between the couple, who divorced last year. Police in Cyprus launched a manhunt for Mr Assad on suspicion of kidnapping when the little girl failed to return home after he had taken her for a day out. But once he crossed the border into Syria from Turkey, he was protected under Syrian law. Louise's father, well known Swords man Frankie Monaghan was very emotional and clearly distressed by the whole situation. He told the County Leader that he was "too upset to speak about the events". He mentioned the stress of the whole situation was taking a great toll on him and the entire family, but he was uplifted to know about the level of support that exists for the Monaghan family. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said it was "providing every assistance" to the family.

Working Group May Solve North County Pyrite Problem People in the North County who have endured the problem of pyrite in their homes are set to get recognition at last. Deputy Alan Farrell (FG) has welcomed the announcement by Environment Minister, Phil Hogan that his department will be establishing an Independent Working Group to facilitate homeowners affected by pyrite. The Minister announced that he has established a panel to seek to identify a way forward in regard to pyrite contamination in private Alan Farrell TD housing stock. He envisages that this will be carried out by the panel through a process of engagement with the parties concerned, principally the industry and affected homeowners. The establishment of the panel comes in the wake of a decision by Homebond, the industry guarantee scheme, to write to affected home owners indicating that they would not accept liability for this form of building defect. The Minister said: “This is of course a civil matter to which the State is not a party or in any way

liable. Nonetheless, I think it right that I should try to facilitate a resolution. I am confident that the panel I am establishing, will make every effort through engagement with the parties to identify a way forward. I am asking them to compile a report on their efforts and I shall arrange to place this in the public domain.” Farrell told the County Leader, “Having experienced the issue with my own home, I have been through almost five years of strife and worry that came with the discovery of pyrite. Along with hundreds of households in the North County, I know first hand that dealing with the significant amount of misinformation and misleading advice that seems to surround the issue is very difficult for anyone in this situation to contend with.” “The working group will consist of an independent chairperson alongside appropriate experts who will call in all relevant bodies involved, including Homebond, developers, quarries and the Construction Industry Federation. However, the group will also be instructed to engage with affected homeowners and associations. “It is now essential that in every estate where homes are affected by pyrite that the householders unite together, become organised and make a comprehensive submission to the Working Group. “I would urge all resident groups in Dublin North to engage fully and positively with the new Working Group. I am committed to ensuring that representatives from our area will have the opportunity to fully engage with the process,” he concluded. The panel is being asked to finalise a report as soon as possible.

Renewed Calls For Brackenstown Centre A Swords councillor and a number of local residents are to make renewed calls to the County Council with regards to a failed proposal for a community centre in Brackenstown.

By Kieran Dunne This latest development comes following the recent earmarking of funds for similar projects in both Applewood and Kinsealy/Melrose, with it now hoped that the Brackenstown centre may be revived. It is thought that the Swords Manor Residents Association (SMRA), who had a meeting on Monday, 19th September, will approach the Council over the issue once more in an attempt to reinvigorate the previously failed campaign. Councillor Darragh Butler (FF) will also be backing the group and has campaigned for the project’s delivery over the past number of years. Speaking to the County Leader, SMRA secretary, Mary Siggins, highlighted how the area would greatly benefit from the centre: “The Brackenstown centre would be great for the whole community. It would provide somewhere for the teenagers to go, somewhere for the sports teams, and also somewhere for the residents association to meet. It would just provide a win win situation throughout the whole community,” she said. Initially, back in 2009, the Council had planned on pumping €2.5 million in to the project with further funding expected to follow the year after. However, due to the government freezing some of the Council’s capital spending funds the project failed to materialise. It is now believed that, due to the

current economic climate, the centre could be delivered at a reduced cost with the prospect of job creation another key aspect to be considered given Swords’ relatively high unemployment levels. Cllr Butler, an active campaigner for the project, has also been very insistent on the centre's importance to the area while highlighting the very frustrating scenario for local residents. "I have received assurances from the Council that the provision of a Community Centre for the Brackenstown area remains a top priority project within the Capital Programme of the Community, Culture & Sports Division. We will continue to keep this project high profile and top priority so it is fully planned and ready to go for when funding does become available," Butler said.

Volunteers Sought For Donabate/Portrane Project

Cllr Darragh Butler (FF) pictured at the site of the proposed Brackenstown Pic: KD Community Centre.

Volunteers have been sought to assist a new project which aims to pass on skills to the local community. The project, organised by Transition Towns Donabate Portrane (TTDP), SkillsLink will be a free social network of learning in the area. The concept will allow people in the community to teach their trades in a social and enjoyable environment. Anyone who is interested in being a mentor of any particular skill is being encouraged to get in touch. A number of classes have been pencilled in so far including: fruit and vegetable gardening, cooking, baking, bike repair, knitting, herb growing and there’s plenty more to come. If your family and friends have ever raved about your cooking or DIY skills, then you would make a perfect mentor and mentors will be given plenty of help and advice along the way. If there is any skill that you have ever wanted to learn email: trish@ttdp.ie to find out more and to see if classes are available. The project is still in the early stages and more details will be announced in the coming weeks.

New Story Writing Competition Secondary school students across the North County are being encouraged to enter a new story-writing competition, launched by TV personality and teacher, Aoibhinn NĂ ShĂşilleabhĂĄin, last week. The ‘Tell The Future’ competition encourages all postprimary students around the country to write a short story outlining their practical and innovative ideas on how to power their country in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way. A range of fantastic prizes are on offer for pupils, their classes and their schools with the closing date for entries being 2nd December. Speaking to the County Leader, Aoibhinn explained: “Secondary students today are the legislators of tomorrow. As a teacher, I see the high level of awareness, the concerns and, in many cases, the very practical environmental and energy-related ideas young people have. ‘Tell The Future’ poses the question to them: ‘As the decision-makers of the future, if you were appointed to come up with a sustainable energy solution for your country, what would you propose?’. The ‘Tell The Future’ competition is part of a panEuropean initiative - ‘Future of Rural Energy in Europe’.

their stall in Grafton Street. I absolutely loved it but working out in the street in bad weather conditions caused my illness to really kick in and I spent three months in The Mater.” Shortly after this protracted spell in hospital, Ingrid met her husband Christy and “we kind of knew straight away this was it,” she said. Following their marriage Christy, who had worked in security at St. Patrick's College Drumcondra, changed direction and trained as a nurse's assistant “so he could look after me when I got sick,” Ingrid explains. “He now

me.” The inability to look too far into the future appears to have helped rather than hindered Ingrid throughout her life and she describes herself as being able to 'go with the flow.' Following an unhappy year in the early '80s at the National College of Art in Dun Laoghaire, she decided, on impulse to travel to Greece and work there for a while. “I just thought Crete sounded nice. My parents were great and knew I had to do it. I worked in a bar, then a restaurant and stayed in a hostel, I just loved the independence of it.” Her wanderlust spirit

works in St. Vincent's Hospital, Elm Park, travelling over and back on his motorbike and he absolutely loves it.” Thankfully Ingrid's health improved immensely when she received a kidney transplant six years ago aged 40. “Talk about life beginning at 40,” she laughs. “It was the first time in my adult life I was able to plan more than a couple of months ahead which is still a really weird concept for

has been infectious and herself and Christy have lived at 10 or 11 different addresses across Dublin before spending a year in a mobile home on the beach in Rush. “It was lovely. We'd no electricity and obviously no TV but we'd oil lamps, a gas fridge, a gas cooker and a shower. We'd a little battery radio and all we did was read. It was literally back to basics and was one of the best years we ever had.”

However, as Christy approached his 40th birthday eight years ago, he decided they needed to settle down and find a home and they bought their terraced house in Loughshinny. “Our home reflects who we are,” Ingrid says. “It's totally crammed with books and stuff and full of colour and it's mad but we love it.” She is enthusiastic about getting back to her painting in the art studio herself and Christy built in the attic of their home. “I couldn't go near the studio after mum died; it was like my whole creativity just shut down. I'm beginning to get it back now; I can kind of feel it. I paint according to my mood and at the moment I'm painting tropical birds and foliage and flowers, really colourful stuff.” Let's hope this creative urge continues and Ingrid and Christy continue to embrace whatever comes their way. “I don't open one door and close another, I kind of like the idea of having all doors open and moving in and out.” Ingrid is looking forward to rehearsals beginning shortly for Rush Musical Society's next comic production Andy Capp, depicting the life of a dysfunctional cartoon character who divides his time between his living room couch and the pub. She is delighted that so many people from across North County Dublin are involved in the production and is grateful to the audiences who come out to support them. “Both the musical society and the drama group in Rush have a reputation for putting on good shows and we've a loyal following which is great.” Ingrid is particularly excited about the group's 25th anniversary celebrations in 2013 when in addition to performances at home, the show will travel to Landskrona in Sweden. “I don't know if Barry, Helen or the committee know yet what the show will be, but I hope to be involved, it's my release, my time out, my fun,” she concludes.

the clock under the watchful eye of their tutor. This event was so successful that they have decided to incorporate these similar events into

Tree Planting Scheme For North County The North County, oddly enough, is set to become brim full of trees within the next year. It seems to be one area that the County Council are not planning to cut back on - that of tree planting. The planting policy is set to increase dramatically in the next few years. The council plan to have at least 1,000 more trees planted around the North County a year in line with its new tree policy. Some trees will be removed that are considered to be planted in inappropriate places and new ones will be placed elsewhere.

Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time, I ask you for a very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted no matter how impossible. Never known to fail. SF

MARTHA SKELLY Anniversary of 22nd September always rembered and in our thoughts from all the Skelly Family. We lost a mother with a heart of gold. How much we miss her can never be told. She shared our troubles and helped us along. If we follow her footsteps we can never go wrong. We miss you from your fireside chair. Your loving smile and gentle air. Your vacant place no one can fill. We miss you mother and always will. She was a mother so very rare. Content in her home and always there. On earth she toiled in heaven she rests. God bless you mother, you were one of the best. Each time we look at your picture, you seem to smile and say Don’t be sad but courage take and love each other for my sake.
