Merger Of Chambers Proves To Be A Great Success Arguably, the most significant impact on local businesses in the recent past, has been the merging of the Fingal Dublin Chamber and the D15 Chamber from Blanchardstown into one cohesive unit, thus creating one major Chamber of Commerce. This is widely regarded as a resounding success and a boost for businesses in the area, where powerful companies are brought under the same umbrella, to their mutual benefit. Fingal Dublin Chamber is now the only Chamber of Commerce north of the Liffey that is affiliated to Chambers Ireland and offering full-time support services for businesses. Last Friday’s Chamber Business Excellence Awards 2012 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Northwood, Santry, drew a record attendance from Chamber members, when 480 business people attended the Chamber’s flagship event of the year, representing an increase of approximately 140 on last year’s awards ceremony. It was the biggest Chamber awards event in the greater Dublin region this year. Public Consultation Report On Monster Sewage Plant Published The County Council has published a report, documenting the stakeholder feedback they received from local people and other stakeholders. It refers to the third phase of non-statutory public consultation on the Monster Sewage Plant project earlier this year. The report says that “the Project team anticipate the decision on the preferred site option, will be made in Spring 2013. The site option will be included for the new regional wastewater treatment works for the Greater Dublin Region in North Dublin, and a route for a new orbital sewer and a location

for a new marine outfall to the Irish Sea. A planning application will then be made to An Bord Pleanála, the independent planning board. The Report is available to download from www.greaterdublindrainage.ie.” “People can read in this report about the issues stakeholders raised during the most recent, third non-statutory public consultation on the project, held in June and July this year” says Peter O’Reilly, the Council’s Project Engineer. He says, “Members of the Greater Dublin Drainage Project Team are currently reviewing all the feed-

back they received and they are also undertaking technical studies on the three emerging preferred site options for the new regional wastewater treatment works and the associated orbital pipeline and outfall location. The three emerging site options are located at Annsbrook and Newtowncorduff in Lusk and Clonshaugh.” The Public Consultation Report on Alternative Site Assessment Phase Two: Emerging Preferred Sites and Routes, May 2012 can be downloaded, free of charge from www.greaterdublindrainage.ie When an emerging preferred site

option is identified next year, the project team will work closely with the local community within which the new regional wastewater treatment works will be built. They will also work with all other stakeholders to provide them with the information they need as the project progresses towards a planning application. The report maintains that the Monster Sewage Plant will be needed to augment the Ringsend regional wastewater treatment works after 2020 and will be developed in phases. “When it opens, it will be no bigger than a sixth of the size of the Ringsend plant. Even when fully extended, by 2040, the new plant in north Co Dublin will not be more than one third of the size of the fully extended Ringsend plant,” it says.

The Wedding’s Off After Warren’s apparent flirtations with a glamorous woman in the Old School House pub last week, it was inevitable that there would be repercussions to his actions. Warren was completely unaware that, what seemed like his amorous advances to this lady, were witnessed in full by Chris’s best friend, Andrea, who took no time in consoling the devastated bride-tobe. In blissful ignorance, Warren headed off to visit his beloved Chris at her home the following day. It was a beautiful early winter’s afternoon and birdsong filled the air. Warren was in buoyant mood. After all, his team, Man Utd had won their match the previous evening and he couldn’t wait to meet up with his beautiful fiancee, Chris. “Could life be any sweeter?” he thought. He frantically banged on the door, which was immediately flung wide open and he was greeted by a scowling Chris, who had collected a few of Warren’s personal items, which were in the house and threw them into the garden, along with the lovely engagement ring. “The wedding’s off. Farrell told the County Leader: “The den is frequently subjected to damage and the railings are a necessity if the group are to continue to use it.” The local scout group contacted Farrell and asked him to raise the matter with the council as they said their den was becoming a magnet and persons not affiliated with the group would simply “hang around” the area. “The scout group informed me that huge maintenance costs had built up over the years, as a result of anti-social behaviour, and they feel that the railings would put a stop to this. There are young children attending the group, so all precautions have to be taken. “ Representatives of the council’s property section and the operations department met with the Rush Scouts on site recently, where the issue of ongoing damage to the den was discussed. The local authority responded and said they had no objection to the erection of railings around the den subject to the normal requirements of the planning department. The scouts have been advised to contact the Planning Department and come back to the Council with more detail of their proposals. An update will be available on this matter in the coming weeks.

Last week, one boy’s dream came true. In the summer, 11 year old Ethan McGarry from Loughshinny entered a competition run by the National Literacy Association to design a T-shirt on the theme of Dreams and Aspirations. It was for the new clothing line launched by Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott and by Jordan Stewart. Ethan, a student at Loughshinny National School, is a huge Manchester City fan, so he was eager to enter the competition. The prize was to see the design in the shops and to meet Joleon Lescott and join him for a training session. Well, lo and behold, Ethan won that prize and last week, he had the trip of a lifetime! Firstly, he and his parents went to the match and saw Manchester City beat Swansea 1- 0. Then the following day, Joleon presented Ethan with a pair

of his new boots and the shirt he’d worn in the Swansea match. He showed Ethan around the Man City state-of-the-art, high tech training complex and introduced Ethan to some of his team mates, including Carlos Tevez and YaYa Toure. Then on Monday, Ethan was given a personal tour of the Manchester City Stadium. This included behind-the-scenes of the changing rooms, where he tried out all the seats of his favourite players! Ethan’s dad Derek said: ‘ This has been a fantastic experience for Ethan. He was so excited to win the competition. Ethan is dyslexic and works hard to overcome his difficulties with reading and writing. We can’t wait to see it go into production.’ Joleon Lescott added: ‘It’s been great meeting Ethan. His design is so colourful and imaginative. It jumped out at me straightaway. Perhaps I identified with it so readily because, like Ethan, I struggled at school too and feel I’m just so fortunate to be living my dream. We all loved Ethan’s design and will be very proud to have it as part of our collection.’

Swords Senior Citizens Make A Difference Swords Senior Citizens have come up trumps once again, as they endeavour to make Christmas a happier time for poor children in Africa. They have managed to fill almost 100 shoe boxes, full of toys, which were collected by Team Hope representative, Charlene Pigott at the centre on Chapel Lane last Wednesday. As well as the boxes, €4 per box was donated by the Senior Citizens to cover the expense of transporting the boxes to Africa. Charlene Pigott was hugely impressed by the actions of the senior citizens. She told the County Leader, “We’re absolutely delighted and very encouraged by the extraordinary kindness of Swords Senior Citizens. These boxes will arrive in time for Christmas and 95 per cent of African children have never held a toy in their lives. Many of these children are AIDS orphans and these are the only gifts they may ever receive,” she said. Eileen Power, chairperson of Swords Senior Citizens was equally enthusiastic when she said, “We’re delighted to be in a position to help and I wish to thank everyone for their help and support, even in the midst of a recession.” Charlene commented that “Swords Senior Citizens continue to deliver, even at the hardest of times. Many of them can remember times of want, especially during

A little girl, whose birthday it was, was given first choice. “We asked the children, which gift in the box do you think she will keep the longest. To our amazement, a little boy put up his hand and said, “She will keep the love that came in the box with her forever.” Well done Swords Senior Citizens, you are making a difference!

entering and exiting at several junctions.” Kelleher said that he has received numerous complaints over the last decade, and the situation has only worsened in recent years. Motorists and pedestrians alike are describing the difficulty of negotiating the road, with frequent hold ups. Kelleher has suggested to the County Manager for a safety audit to be conducted on the road. The aim of this audit would be to gain expert opinion on road safety and to identify possible methods of improvements at the site. Traffic signals or other traffic calming measures could help to alleviate the situation for motorists on the road. Another suggestion is to provide zebra crossings for pedestrians to cross the Rathbeale Road more easily, and safely.

Festive Fun For Malahide Musical Society Following the award winning production of ‘Sweeney Todd’ last year, Malahide Musical and Dramatic Society are getting ready for their upcoming Winter show. ‘For One Night Only’ will take place in Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Centre on Sunday 2nd December at 7.30pm. Natalia Lysek, Swords “The last book I read was a Terry Prachett novel. I like Terry Prachett, I’ve read a few of his books. I read in Polish, for now it's easier for me. It is hard to translate words from English to Polish. Right now I am trying to read an English book. Hopefully I will manage. I got a Kindle two months ago, so I'm starting to read on that. It's cheaper, it is faster to get the books. If I don't need really to have a book on my shelf, I can just download it."

Jason Cruise, Coolock "I haven't read a book in years. I just read the newspapers or magazines. The last book I read was a crime novel by Paul Williams."

James Perry, Swords "I'm reading Jarhead by Anthony Swofford at the moment. They made a film about it. I'll read anything really, I buy second hand books from the St. Vincent de Paul to support them."

Marion Cox, Seatown "'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' trilogy were the last books I read, my daughter was reading them and she passed on to me and my husband. We actually read them on holidays. They were absolutely great reads. And we saw the film. It lived up to the book, but the book was a bit better. I read books not on the Kindle, I prefer that, you can pick them up and put them down at your leisure. I read alot of books on holidays."

Classic Christmas Concert In Balbriggan A rare festive concert will take place in St. George’s Church, Church St., Balbriggan, which celebrates its bicentenary in 2013. To mark the eve of this historic anniversary, Fingal Chamber Choir has offered to perform the beautiful St. Nicholas Mass or Missa Sancti Nicolai by Joseph Haydn, as well as other Christmas choral favourites. This locally based choir and its renowned director, David Maxwell, will be accompanied by one of the best organists in Ireland, Andrew Johnstone. The choir which rehearses in St. George’s N.S. has performed, not only in Ireland but in Norway and France. This is a concert not to be missed on Sunday, 9th December at 7.30pm.

Fun Run In Rush On Sunday, 2nd December, Rush Community Council will hold a 10k and 5k race. This is the second year for the Christmas Rush Fun Run and runners and walkers of all levels are welcome. The race will take in some of the best views around the seaside town of Rush and it's

Experts in Stuttgart believe the bat had flown into the packaging by mistake and had suffocated to death. Scientists have been unable to establish whether the bat had flown into the box of cereal at the factory or after they had been opened. I expect to see results with relation to the development and linkage between Malahide Castle and the Village in the next week. This is to include the promised walkway between the two points, and adequate signage being put in place. This will have a benefit for the whole town, not just those businesses located on the castle grounds.” There will be a follow up meeting between both sides next week.

Christmas Books For Charity In Skerries

Christmas Card Launch In Balbriggan By Roxana Neag When you send out Christmas cards to your loved ones, or you plan to buy a calendar for next year, think about how a small gesture can make a big difference for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and families of children with autism. Balbriggan Branch of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind launched their Christmas cards and calendars on the 8th of November in the Milestone Lounge. Volunteers, residents and businesses from Balbriggan came along to support this worthwhile cause. “We would like to thank all our suppliers and to everyone who supported us along the way. And we want to wish you all the happiest Christmas ever.” said the group’s representatives. People are welcome to continue to offer

their support to the Guide Dogs. The Christmas Cards and Calendars are now available from all the usual outlets in Balbriggan and Skerries. Balbriggan is now home to many Guide dog owners, Assistance dog owners, Puppies in Training and Fundraising dogs. Anyone has ever considered learning the craft of creative writing in the North County will have encountered the name of Megan Wynne who is about to publish another volume of stories, all for charity, this Christmas. Megan has been running her creative writing classes very successfully for the past number of years and her Christmas books, which are a tradition around Skerries at this stage, happened quite by accident. At the end of her first year of classes, she decided to staple together five children’s stories into a booklet. The following year she did it again, this time with ten or fifteen stories. As there was quite a demand for these books, she decided to sell them for a charity.

Since then the Christmas book has become a local tradition. Each year the students nominate a charity to receive profits from the sales. Last year three hundred copies were sold - but again it wasn’t enough to meet demand - so this year five hundred copies have been ordered for the biggest and best collection yet! This Christmas the book is entitled ‘A Stocking Full of Stories,’ and all proceeds are going to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin. As Skerries Mills was so packed last year, the launch is moving to Ardgillan Castle on Sunday, December 9th at 2.30pm. There will be readings at the launch and afterwards the authors will sign their books in the grand dining room.

The Christmas season will get underway at 4pm on Saturday, 24th November with the arrival of Santa Claus to Balbriggan Town Centre just in time for the turning on of the Christmas Lights. George’s Square will come alive for a wonderful festive event for the whole community to enjoy

with a variety of Christmas musical and street entertainment. The very popular Christmas Lights competition is underway again this year and one lucky child will be selected by an Cathaoirleach of Balbriggan Town Council, Larry Dunne at 4.15pm to turn on the Balbriggan Christmas Lights and receive a fabulous prize of an Apple ipad. Entry forms for the competition are available in the Town Hall, Goldsmiths Jewellers and Supervalu. Santa will be spending time in his Grotto meeting with the younger members of the community and will have free gifts to give to the children. Santa’s Elves will be helping Santa by performing magic tricks and giving out festive treats while Santa’s little visitors are waiting to see him.

An exhibition of students’ Art, Craft and Design projects from the 2012 state exams was held in Fingal Community College, Swords on Monday 12th November last. This exhibition was curated by the Transition Year students and their Art and Home Economics teachers Ms Lynch and Ms Hearun. It consisted of work from Art, Home Economics , Metalwork and Woodwork, all of which achieved excellent results in the state exams. Local primary schools paid a visit to the exhibition that was held in the school hall on Monday morning and they were accompanied by their teachers. The visit to the exhibition gave them a flavour of the subjects that will be on offer to them when they start secondary school. In the afternoon, the exhibition was officially opened by County Council’s Arts Education officer, Julie Clarke. The exhibition was attended by parents, students, teachers and local businesses. The winners were Donna Fogarty for Art, Kyle Maguire for Woodwork, Damien McGlynn for Metalwork and Megan McKeown for Home Economics Craft.

Tina Turner scares off birds from airport A British airport is blasting out Tina Turner songs to scare birds away from its runways. Gloucestershire Airport in Staverton has been playing songs, such as Simply The Best, full blast from a loudspeaker mounted on a van which is driven up and down the runways. The speakers normally play bird distress noises, but when it failed to work one day, staff turned the tape player on and found that the diva's powerful voice was just as effective.

Moyne Road (with an over railway bridge and new junction on the Coast Road). Another project shelved is the Malahide realignment road scheme which would provide a byepass at Balgriffin. However, local councillor, Peter Coyle (Lab) is pleased to note that one project that is very much back on the agenda for advancing, is the proposed new link road from the Drumnigh Road/ Moyne Road junction to the realigned Hole in the Wall Road. This route is very much used by traffic going to and from Portmarnock and Malahide. He told the County Leader, “The plans for the Hole-in-the-Wall Road are to build a new bridge over the Moyne River and onwards towards Drumnigh Road. Negotiations are taking place between the County Council and Dublin City Council to complete the link. The detailed design is being worked out. It is hoped that this project could go out for tender later in 2013.” According to Coyle, “the provision of this new link road will address the current difficulties for traffic at two junctions on the Moyne Road (Drumnigh Road R124 junction and the existing Hole-in-theWall junction). Given the volume of traffic in this North City Fringe area, the new link road will be very welcome.”

The winners will debate major EU issues in the European Parliament Building with 600 other students from most countries across the European Union.

The local Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes (CAHWT) held a lively protest outside Fingal County Council offices, Swords, on Monday 12th November last. The group proceeded to publicly burn letters received by residents for non-payment of the household charge, and documents regarding the forthcoming property tax. Speaking to the County Leader at the protest, Clare Daly TD, said “This is a symbolic protest on behalf of the tens of thousands in the North County that are not going to be intimidated by council letters. Our resolve is hardened coming up to the Budget. We know that the council are using the information from those who have registered for the household charge, to then bill them with a larger property tax in July next year. Our protest is a reminder to let them know we are still out here, and that we won’t be bullied.” The County Leader also spoke to local Cllr Darragh Butler (FF) on the issue. Butler commented, “People have a right to protest, but I’m worried about giving the general public false hope. The household charge isn’t going to go away. Many politicians would enjoy the exposure of going to jail. But if ordinary people do get summonsed to court, they

could end up with a hefty bill and a judgement/ conviction against them, which could affect them considerably in the future. Ultimately it will have to be paid.” Butler continued to advise that as the North County has received 68 per cent, no funding will be cut in the local authority. However, the county council remains under pressure to collect all household charge payments due. Butler said “After discussions at the county council meeting on Monday 12th November, I believe the council are still matching up data for households against their database. A third and quite substantial batch of letters will be going out shortly to those who have not paid. But it seems they are a long way off from going down the road of taking householders to court. I hope if it does come to that stage, that they will allow us to debate it in the Chamber first.”

Locals Urged To Keep Towns Clean Chairman of the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) has warned the local authority that ‘The Gathering’ project and its success will be undermined if the standards of cleanliness all around the North County towns are not kept up during the festivities. Speaking at an international conference of environmental experts recently, Dr Tom Cavanagh, Chairman of IBAL was concerned that in the current climate, local authorities might cut

back on cleaning schedules in 2013 and jeopardise the success of The Gathering. “In the current environment, local authorities need to look at cost-effective ways to maintain cleanliness levels,” he said. Speaking to the County Leader, Chairman of Swords Tidy Towns, Des Becton, said he had faith that the Council would do their utmost to ensure the standards were kept as high as possible. “I think the Council will use all the resources they have to make sure the towns

stay as clean as ever, due to the large amount of visitors we may get to the various areas. I certainly hope that litter issues wouldn’t arise because of this.” From the perspective of Swords Tidy Towns, Des says himself and the entire committee will be making a special effort to ensure that standards go up, not down: “Our Tidy Towns group will be aiming to increase our level of cleanliness, not see it get worse! Elephant learns to speak Korean An Asian elephant called Koshik has astounded scientists - by learning to speak Korean. Researchers report that the mammal has learnt to imitate human speech and can say five words in Korean. The zoo animal places the tip of his trunk into his mouth to transform his natural low rumble into a convincing impression of a human voice. But the researchers do not believe that he has any comprehension of the words that he is saying. Instead, they think that the elephant took up talking as a way to bond with his humans.

A Box Full Of Hope Christmas is right around the corner and is, traditionally the time of year that we give to those in need. The hugely successful Christmas Shoebox Appeal has just wrapped up around the North County and was a prime example of the spirit of giving that exists within our local towns. In this week's County Living, we speak to teacher Orla Ní Chárthaigh, who was involved in the appeal. She sat down to chat about herself, her love of teaching and why she enjoys being a part of community life. Orla, though originally from Skerries, teaches in Gaelscoil Bhrian Boroimhe in Swords. She has been teaching for the past 10 years and has loved it from an early age: “It really started off right from when I was small, I was always playing ‘teacher’ as a child,” she said. “I knew from my own experience in school that I wanted to teach myself. I suppose I must have had some pretty nice teachers along the way too! I can’t imagine doing anything else, I never could.” She is currently Deputy Principal and also teaches Learning Sport and Resources, so she has her hands full. “I love working in the school. I was there from the very start when we were very small and even though we have expanded, it is still a wonderful place to teach.” It’s clear upon our meeting that Orla has obviously found her niche; she has many qualities which make her an ideal teacher. She is a gregarious person, very outgoing and patient, all of which, no doubt come in handy when dealing with a group of excitable pupils? “The children are really fantastic. They are what makes my job so great. Sure one or two have their moments, but its always worth it when you’re there to see them grow and improve as individuals. It definitely gives you a great sense of satisfaction.” “They are always amusing and funny and are the perfect antidote if you happen to come to work in a bad mood!” The Skerries lady has lived in the town since she was eight, with a very active social life outside of the school. When she’s not working, she loves sports and keeping fit. She recently participated in the Dublin Marathon for the first time, an experience that she thoroughly enjoyed. “I suppose I am very sporty, though I would never in a million years call myself that!” she says, laughing. “Growing up, I was very involved in the local Scouts and was a member of the Skerries Harps GAA and I play for Skerries Hockey Club now, so all that activity when I was young rubbed off a little bit at least.” Orla says being involved in so many community groups as a child gave her very solid grounding

when she went to start her teaching. “Not only do you get to be involved in the goings on, you also have plenty of sport and activities you can pass on and encourage the children to play as well. It’s a great community to grow up in.” She tells me about a life changing experience she had in 2005. “I travelled to Africa with the Voluntary Service Overseas organisation (VSO) and I lived there for two years and worked training other teachers. It was absolutely fantastic. I originally went for one year, but loved it so much, that I stayed for another. I found myself not wanting to come home and it took me a while to adjust to normal life afterwards." "It's because of my time over there that I really see the personal aspect to the Shoebox Appeal," she continued. "The little things make a huge difference, so they truly appreciate everything that is in those boxes." I ask her to tell me a little about the school’s involvement with the Team Hope Shoebox Appeal, which she says went brilliantly this year. “The Shoebox Appeal is something that myself and the staff and children in the school are very proud to be involved in. We’ve participated in it for as long as I can remember and still try to pull out all the stops to make it bigger and better than the year before.” For those who don’t know much about it, the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal is on every year around the festive season. It aims to deliver over 195,000 shoeboxes from Ireland (this year alone), into the hands of needy children in Africa, whose families typically live on less than €1 per day. Each year, residents all around the North County excel themselves in their generosity and Orla says its these values that herself and the school are eager to pass onto the pupils. “We found that its something the children really understand; the concept of giving a present and packing it themselves to give to another child, it’s so personable and at Christmas, its just lovely that they can do something so nice for somebody else.” Orla, though more a home bird than a jet setter, does enjoy a bit of travelling, but is happy to be settling down. She is looking forward to the upcoming Christmas festivities in the school and looking back over her life and achievements, she says its been the little things in her life that she has enjoyed the most: "It's always been the smaller achievements, such as being involved in the children's lives or competing in the marathon as I did. It's those things that really make me happy."

Communication Is Key For Swords School A secondary school in Swords is at the forefront of efforts to improve lines of communication between teachers and parents to help every student be the best that they can be. Fingal Community College believes partnership with parents is key to a young person’s success and have put a programme in place to put that ethos into action. Sharon McGrath, principal of the school, told the County Leader: “Achieving with care is a core value for all the teachers and staff of Fingal Community College. The young people are supported to be the best that they can be and we understand that this will only happen if they feel happy and cared for. ‘Parents and family are a key influence on teenagers and we are totally convinced of the value of strong links between home and school. Partnership with parents is key to a young person’s success.” A series of talks and events have been taking

place in Fingal Community College this year to strengthen the partnership between home and school. A talk on ‘Improving Literacy - What can parents do?’ took place in the college recently and was followed with a talk given by well known clinical psychologist David Coleman. The topics David covered included the transition from primary to secondary school and how parents and the school together can support teenagers as they navigate their journey through adolescence. He also spoke about teenage experimentation and alcohol and substance use, risk taking, peer relationships and understanding sexuality, teenage stress and how to recognise and resolve bullying behaviour. His presentation was extremely well received. The question and answer session which followed allowed for a robust discussion. Training sessions for Fingal Community College parents are being offered for the system and any parents not yet registered for this new service are invited to contact the principal, Sharon McGrath.

Dublin Airport is getting greener and will aim to cut its energy use by up to a third by 2020 under a new partnership agreement with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). The deal to work towards a 33 per cent improvement in energy efficiency at the airport was signed by DAA Interim Chief Executive, Oliver Cussen and SEAI Chief Executive, Dr Brian Motherway. Under the agreement, DAA will build on the significant progress already made by the company under its extensive energy sustainability programme. Short-term measures to be undertaken include; the replacement of five existing airport operational vehicles

with fully electric models on a trial basis, the upgrading of airport car park lighting with the installation of energy efficient LED lighting, and further reductions in energy consumption. New ‘ green screens’ are also planned to keep passengers updated on environmental and energy usage information at the airport. Dublin Airport is already Airport Carbon Accredited, as part of a Europe-wide airport carbon management certification programme that covers more than half of European air passenger traffic. The airport is certified at the ‘Reduction’ level, as the airport has reduced its carbon footprint in recent years.

The new agreement means the DAA is now part of the SEAI Partnership Programme which helps public bodies to save money, improve the environment and meet national obligations by making significant reductions in their energy usage. Speaking to the County Leader, Mary Coveney, head of DAA Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE), said the agreement was just the start of the company’s partnership with SEAI at Dublin Airport. “We will be working with SEAI experts to assess potential projects to improve energy efficiency and help support the development of Energy Action Plans for Dublin Airport and DAA is committed to having an exemplary role with respect to energy efficiency.”

If graffiti or littering is a problem in your area, your local residents association, business or community group could “Adopt a Patch.” The way it works is that your group selects a public area to adopt and yourself and the Council agree a maintenance programme. This would involve collecting litter, painting of the area or maintaining flower beds. Reflective vests, litter pickers and paint would be provided by the Council and we will arrange for the bags of litter (no green waste) to be collected. Once the patch is being maintained, a sign may then be erected, advertising that your business or group has adopted the area. This scheme operates very successfully with groups around the North County adopting parts of a beach, a bottlebank, or litter blackspot. A designated area is allocated to a business or community group who wishes to adopt it and the company or group then agrees with the council a litter maintenance programme. This involves arranging for a number of staff and or people to collect litter at an agreed number of times per year, painting of the area and maintaining flower beds where applicable. The scheme benefits all of the parties involved and because of this, the scheme is extremely successful.

Keep North County Ash Trees Healthy The professional horticultural and arboricultural staff working in the County Council are requesting the people of the North County to watch out for and report any suspected incidents of Ash Dieback Disease, Chalara fraxinea. In May this year, the disease was found in the UK and last month it appeared in Co. Leitrim. It appears it entered Ireland in a consignment of young ash trees and has been in the country for three years. The Department of Agriculture has identified sites where

these trees were planted and is destroying plants at these locations in an effort to contain or eliminate the disease. The County Council are not aware of any outbreaks in the North County as yet but continue to monitor for symptoms. The Forestry Commission has an excellent video on it's website on identification of symptoms which would be invaluable for anyone wishing to watch out for the disease. If anyone sees a s h t r e e s s h o w i n g these symptoms or is suspicious that the disease might be present, please contact the County Council.

Local Swimmer Makes A Splash A local swimmer has been making quite a splash in the pool, setting a new Irish senior record in the 1,500m freestyle. Aer Lingus member, Andrew Meegan continued his brilliant start to the short course season when he travelled to the German capital of Berlin to compete in the Fina/Arena World Cup series. Continuing from Conor Turner's recent Irish Junior record in Stockholm in the same event, Meegan set a blis-

tering pace, taking the first 100 metres out in 58.34. Completing a gruelling 60-80 km a week training schedule, he had the confidence and strength to build throughout the race. He set a new Irish senior record of 15.13.25, knocking four seconds off his previous best. Head coach and mentor, Alan Turner was thrilled by this achievement. “The stats show Andy can go faster still and this performance takes him to near world class status,” he said. Meegan broke the record previously held by fellow swimmer Steven Manley.

Students from North County Dublin are being encouraged to participate in DARE2BDRINKAWARE.ie, a film and interactive multimedia competition that aims to promote responsible attitudes towards alcohol. Now in its sixth year, DARE2BDRINKAWARE.ie is a film and interactive multimedia competition, open to third-level students throughout Ireland, including students from the North County. For the 2013 competition, students are invited to submit film and multimedia entries on the theme of ‘pacing our drinking’. Speaking at the launch of the 2012/13 DARE2BDRINKAWARE.ie competition, Fionnuala Sheehan, Chief Executive of drinkaware.ie, said, “Irish people consume almost three times as much alcohol as their European counterparts on any one drinking occasion. This trend is particularly prevalent among students, who

are living away from home for the first time and get caught up in the social aspects of student life. Entries for the competition can be produced in the form of a short film or interactive website. Entries must focus on pacing our drinking, aligning the competition’s aim of promoting the responsible use of alcohol and / or challenging anti-social drinking behaviours. “We see DARE2BDRINKAWARE.ie as a way for the film and multimedia creatives of the future, from North County Dublin and around the country, to get a first step on the career ladder; gain exposure to industry insiders; network; and make important industry links,” she said. The deadline for receipt of proposals is Friday, 23rd November. Teams that have submitted successful proposals will then have until March 2013 to produce and submit their short films or interactive websites.
