Local Grower Slams Council O

ne of the North County’s leading businessmen has slammed the County Council for the decision to locate the proposed Super Sewage Plant in the North County.

Martin Tully set up Tully Nurseries over 30 years ago and in this time has become the largest producer and exporter of shrubs in Ireland. He spoke to the County Leader about his genuine concerns for the future of his business, should the sewage plant go ahead. “My business is located less than a mile from two of the proposed sites at Annsbrook and Newtowncorduff. If the wind blows the stink from either site, my customers will not hang around.” Tully spoke about the great difficulties he and his family had to overcome to set up his businesses in the North County and the efforts made to attract customers both large and small to come to North County Dublin, may be all for nothing. “I remember travelling the length and breadth of

By Patrick Finnegan Britain at the height of the ‘Troubles’ when it was not fashionable to promote Ireland. I did so and made the vital connections which meant that my business grew and developed to where it is today. This decision now puts all this at risk,” he said. He went further and suggested that this will be the death knell for the vegetable business in North County Dublin. “The well deserved reputation of this area as the Market Garden of Ireland will be destroyed forever and our grandchildren will be known as the people who live where the sewer is. - what a legacy to leave them.” The fact that a very large proportion of the vegetables consumed in this country are grown in the heart of the North County is another cause of great concern to him, should the sewage plant go ahead. Like many in the area, he feels that North County Dublin has taken its fair share of rubbish from Dublin and that it is grossly unfair to saddle a community with the stress of having to take the sewage of Wicklow, Meath, Kildare and other parts of Dublin. He then proceeded to give a chilling reminder to the ‘faceless’ decision makers

and said: “these people need to stand up and will have on the reputation of North County admit that they destroyed Fingal, a once beautiful Dublin. “We supply plants all over the country and to the UK. Malahide Parish Cream Of The Christmas Fair GERMANY

Tops Scientist Anke Domaske from Germany is set to shake up the fashion industry - with a range of clothes made out of milk. She discovered a way of combining powdered organic milk with other ingredients to weave a special fabric for her QMilch line. "Bio clothing is about to take off and we're ahead of the curve," she explained.

Malahide Parish are holding their Christmas Fair on Sunday, December 4th in the Parish Hall from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Come along, join in the festive fun and enjoy: Pears in red wine, peaches in brandy, Homemade jams, chutneys, cakes, the always popular Bottle Stall, Fresh Fruit and vegetables, Wheel of Fortune, Bric-aBrac, A Monster Raffle, Tea/Coffee, Mulled Wine and lots lots more. All are welcome.

Kinsealy Community Centre Gets Green Light Following our previous story on the Kinsealy Community Centre, it seems the project has finally been given the go ahead at last. Funding for the project has been identified in the council’s 2012 Capital Programme. This will come as a long awaited delight to the residents of Kinsealy who have had no recreational centre of their own for years and have fought tirelessly to get the problem addressed. Jim Keely from the Melrose/Kinsealy residents association recently told the County Leader that the centre was vital for the community and the younger children in particular needed a centre: “When we do organise fun days, there are always a lot of young children who attend which in itself shows the demand for a centre.” There is to be a community centre built alongside a project to build a church for Swords Baptists. The plans include a mult-purpose sports centre as well as community meeting rooms and offices. According to the councils Capital Programme for 2012, over €1.4 million has been ear marked for the project.

Red Kites Found Dead There was some very disappointing news to report, with the recent deaths of three of the Red Kites that were released into the wild in the North County last July. The Golden Eagle Trust discovered a dead Red Kite last Saturday week and the post mortem process began on the following Monday. Two other dead birds, which were alive earlier in the week, were recovered dead in the immediate vicinity last Thursday. Marc Ruddock, Red Kite Project Manager told the County Leader, “Preliminary findings from the Regional Veterinary Laboratory in Backweston suggests the kite had suffered a degree of haemorrhaging - this may indicate that it digested an illegal banned poison or it may have digested dead rats, poisoned legally, and suffered secondary poison as a result. The toxicology results will be crucial. But some of the samples may need to be sent to Britain for toxicology testing for rodenticides,” he said. There was great excitement In July this year,

when 26 young Red Kites, were collected under licence from wild nests in Wales, and released in Newbridge Demesne with a further 13 young

Red Kites released shortly thereafter from a private location in the North County. Ruddock added, “The Irish Farmers Association has condemned illegal poisoning publicly. The Golden Eagle Trust has good relations with the National Association of Regional Gun Clubs (NARGC) and the Irish Countryside Alliance and they have told us privately that they too are totally opposed to illegal poisoning. We have been in touch with the Irish Homing Union, representing pigeon fanciers, and are anxious to discuss and consider their concerns. This is a blow to the community and we need to get to the bottom of it. The project has been very positively received in the North County and we are very hopeful for its success,” he said. “The Irish countryside is changing constantly and whilst a worrying number of species are in serious decline, Red Kites are now gracing the farms in the North County. We are on a slow learning curve but we really need to speed up the level of national awareness of the fragility of the nature and landscape that support us as a people - an awareness that our supposedly primitive ancient ancestors held in abundance,” he concluded.

Loughshinny Shows It’s Resolve The resistance of the people of Loughshinny to the proposed new Super Sewage Plant was fully in evidence at County Hall on Thursday last. A total of more than 200 letters of submission were handed over to the County Council by Mary Markey and Geraldine Fagan from the Loughshinny Community Association. Mary told the County Leader, “The entire village is behind us on this issue and every household submitted a letter of objection,” she said. “People are genuinely concerned about their future and the effect this Super Sewage Plant will have on their quality of life. They also fear that their children will not have the opportunity to swim in the water off our

Grand Opening Of Swords Charity Superstore By Derry-Ann Morgan The grand opening of the new St Vincent de Paul Charity Super Store in Castle Shopping Centre, Swords took place on Thursday 17th November last. The new store was opened in style, with Bobby Savage from Swords cutting the ribbon while eager shoppers waited outside to catch a bargain or two. The original shop opened in Swords 14 years ago. Construction work on the extension began in August and was complete in four weeks. “We were delighted that we managed to keep the shop open during those four weeks, thanks to our dedicated volunteers”, said shop supervisor, Damian Bridges, speaking to the County Leader. “We have a fantastic loyal and dedicated team of 50 volunteers,” continued Damian. All of the stock for the store is donated by the local community. “Without the continuous generous quality donations we receive from the local community, the shop would not survive. My plan is to give back to the local community by way of providing great quality goods at super value,” concluded Damian. The new shop is open Monday to Saturday. Pictured here at the grand opening of the new Charity Super Store - St Vincents de Paul in Swords are L-R: Bobby Savage, Damian Bridges, Shop Supervisor and Dermot McGilloway, Regional Manager.

coastline and that our fishermen will also be affected.” Loughshinny relies heavily on the fishing and food industries, two of the sectors most likely to be affected by the presence of a sewage plant. There is a real fear of contamina-

tion of food in the area, which is located in the heart of the horticultural industry in the area. The people of Loughshinny demonstrated their solidarity at a public meeting in the village recently that attracted a bumper crowd.

Proud Day For Swords Student

Achieves Degree and Wins Promotion Seán Fitzmaurice of North County Leader last week graduated from Dublin Business School with a BA (Hons) in Business Management. Seán who was Production Manager at North County Leader was also awarded a promotion within the company on completion of his degree and now takes up the role of Deputy General Manager. Seán is pictured here at the conferring ceremony with his parents Marie and Gerry.

Saturday, 12th November last, was a very proud day for the students, parents and staff at Fingal Community College in Swords. The Engineering and Technology Teachers Association held their Annual Awards Ceremony which celebrates the achievements of all the students in the country that excelled in Engineering, Metalwork, Technical Graphics and Design and Communication

Graphics during that year. It was a very special day for one Swords student. John Donohoe from Fingal Community College, who clinched the top award of the day to be crowned the “Young Engineer 2011”. One of the subjects John did was Engineering, and students had to complete a design project. John designed and built a model Snow Mobile. His design was exceptional and creative and was built

to a very high specification and professionally finished off. After achieving an ‘A’ in the subject, John’s project was submitted to the regional (Dublin) finals in September, where the judges awarded him first place. This allowed him to pit his project against all of the other students in the country. After close deliberation from the three judges, John clinched 1st place. It was a proud day for John, his parents, Bridget and Anthony

Donohoe. He received a lot of help from his Engineering teacher, Niall Cassidy. A delighted Principal, Ms. Sharon McGrath was on hand to congratulate his massive achievement. This is the first award of its kind for the school and indeed the second time since the first year of the competition in 1986 that a Dublin school has scooped the award.

deadline. Submissions should be addressed to The Secretary, C o n s t i t u e n c y Commission, Room 1.65, Custom House, Dublin 1, or by email to constituency.commission@environ.ie Butler said: “This was the number one issue encountered by all political parties when canvassing in the recent Dublin West bye-election, and now is the time to have our voices heard. I am also a Dublin West voter who wants back in to Dublin North. Swords voters feel totally disenfranchised within the Dublin West constituency and that they have nothing in common or any real geographical connection with Castleknock or Blanchardstown with mainly empty fields and motorways between them. He continued, “To point out how crazy and totally unjust this is, in the recent Dublin West byeelection, voters from Brackenstown Road, Brackenstown Village and Park Avenue could not vote in St Cronan’s School, across the road from them. Instead, they had to get into their cars and drive to Rivervalley to vote in the constituency of Dublin West.

The Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce Annual Gala Ball will take place on Saturday 3rd December in the Bracken Court Hotel. This event proves year on year to be a fantastic social occasion. The event will start with a mulled wine reception followed by a four course gala menu. The meal will be followed by a cele-

bration of Mr Barry Cassin’s career as an actor and director. The celebration will feature a ‘fireside’ chat between Angus McAnally and Barry Cassin where the highlights of Barry’s career will be reviewed. Then the Delorean Band plan to wow the gala guests with an 80’s spectacular, which will lead the event into the early hours. All are welcome, tickets are 75 euro each and can be purchased by calling 01 968 00 80.

Landmark Gig For Swords Band The Slaughtered Lamb was full to capacity with excited fans who turned out to see Pat McManus perform his 1000th gig as a solo artist with his band, the Pat McManus band. Last week, the band returned to Ireland, interrupting their sold out European tour. “The Slaughtered Lamb is our real home away from home, it's where it really all began. When we realised this landmark in Pat's career was coming up, we knew there was only one real way to celebrate it, and that was to return home and put on a special night in our favourite Irish

By Jennifer Ryan venue,” said Gordon Sheridan, the

Malahide-born bass player in the Pat

McManus band. “The real feeling about us making this trip home for just one night is, it's our way of saying thank you, and to show our real respect to all the loyal fans, from the North County, many of whom have become friends, who come and see Pat all the time, since the beginning of the Pat McManus Band, and in the old Mamas Boys days.” The band will return from France to play another Dublin gig in Gibneys of Malahide on Thursday the 24th of November with Special Guests Audience of One and Jack Ryan.
