Inspiration For Anti-Sewage Plant Campaigners As the time counts down toward the selection of three proposed sites for the Super Sewage Plant in the North County, the tension is beginning to mount in the affected communities.

By Patrick Finnegan The nine land parcels will be reduced to three next month, thus bringing relief to residents of six locations. Later this year, the preferred site will be chosen, including the marine outfall location and transfer pipeline corridors. However, there may be some solace for anti-Super Sewage Plant campaigners from an unlikely source. A long running battle between local residents of two towns in Co Donegal and the local authority has rumbled on for the past 23 years. These communities faced many of the same problems that North County communities are experiencing regarding the location of a sewage plant. Enda Craig, from the Community for a Clean Estuary in Donegal, told the County Leader, “The Greencastle/Moville combined sewage treatment scheme made its appearance in 1989. The scheme envisaged combining the towns of Greencastle, which is located right at the mouth of Lough Foyle, a tidal

estuary of great value, and Moville, some three miles upstream, into a single waste water treatment plant.” “The local authority ignored the voices of the local communities, who had problems with the plant. In fact, one local person had a Masters Degree in Engineering and over 20 years worldwide working experience, but they refused to listen. Craig continued, “A decision was made, that a much more determined resistance was going to be necessary. A group was set up to take a close look at the studies supporting the scheme. By 1990, it was found that the outfall modelling work, done on behalf of the council, highlighted the fact that pollution from the outfall was systematically reaching the local beaches,” he said. The end result is that the sewage plant in Donegal has yet to proceed and the local communities have triumphed over the council’s plans to carry on regardless. A similar situation occurred here in the North County, when the Fairshare Group resisted efforts by the local authority to locate the Super Sewage Plant in Donabate and Portrane. Their dogged resistance ensured that the plant would not be located in what was regarded by the experts as a suitable site. This, in addition to the determination of the people on the

Inishowen Peninsula, has ensured that when local communities come together in a cohesive way, nothing is impossible. Whilst here in the North County, the local communities have presented over 10,000 submissions to the Council, there seems to be a sense of inevitability about the whole thing. Whilst this is an extraordinary number of people with objections to the siting of the Super Sewage plant in the North County, one wonders if the council will proceed, no matter what emerges from the submissions, like what happened in Donegal. Among the issues raised in the submissions received to date are: archaeology and cultural heritage,

Pressure Mounts On Reilly The submission of a proposal to locate the National Children’s Hospital in Swords, as reported in last week’s edition of the County Leader, appears to be gaining momentum. The siting of the proposed new hospital at Lissenhall in Swords has the support of the community and business groups alike in the area, who view the huge benefits that would accrue from having this project in the North County. Apart from the accessibility of the area to all parts of Ireland, via our exceptional road network, other local benefits cannot be ignored. The full time and part time jobs created would be of immense importance to the area. Residents from all over the North County view this as a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of one of the largest projects to be undertaken anywhere. They feel that local resident and Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly needs to be hands on in delivering this project to his own electoral area. The

County Leader spoke to locals, many of whom wondered if the Minister was even interested in delivering this project to his own area. The County Leader contacted the

Tony Lambert, CEO Fingal Dublin Chamber, which lobbies for business across all of Fingal was very much in favour of siting the hospital in Swords. He told the County Leader, “This would deliver a major confidence boost for the

community impact, construction impacts, ecology and protected habitats, shellfish waters, health and odour impacts, livelihood concerns, agronomy, agriculture and horticulture. The need for the project, overburdening property and land values, road infrastructure and traffic/road safety, technologies and treatment levels, sludge treatment, water quality, the outcalls, and the planning process were also considered. These objections are similar to those which applied in Donegal for the past 23 years. Perhaps the communities of the North County would be well advised to take a leaf out of the book of a much smaller community, which has managed to halt a juggernaut in it’s tracks.

area. This ticks all of the boxes in respect of the provision of a Paediatric Hospital. This is a very exciting submission and we’re delighted to support it. The Chamber actively encourages it’s members to support this project and the Chamber will begin a social network campaign this week to support the project,” he said. Meanwhile, Kevin Tolan, President of Balbriggan Chamber also greeted the proposal with open arms. “From a business point of view, Balbriggan will get a huge spin-ff, with jobs beng created in construction and others like security, cleaning, nursing etc. The local hotels can also benefit from extra accommodation. Also the fact that such a hospital would be minutes away from Balbriggan is very important. From a business point of view, the Chamber is fully supportive of this project, he concluded. Al Ryan from Malahide Chamber said, “A hospital for Swords is a good fit, considering the excellent road and rail infrastructure into the area. Swords is, after all, equivalent in size to Limerick. Our local business community welcomes this project and we see it as an appropriate location to have the

hospital,” he said. Martin Scully, President of Skerries Chamber, also welcomed the proposal. “Anything that brings extra employment and boosts business in the North County would be very welcome,” he said. Mairead Sweetman, Chairperson of Rush Chamber was equally enthusiastic about the project. She told the County Leader, “Businesses in Rush and surrounding areas are set to benefit if this project goes ahead. The chances for employment in the area are immense,” she said. Fran Whelan from Broadmeadow Healthcare, who submitted the proposal was very upbeat when he said, “This project will have a huge spin-off for Swords and the greater North County region. The possibilities are endless and this could easily become a €1 billion project when everything is factored in,” he said. It is clear that this project would have a very beneficial effect on the entire North County and the local electorate will be very interested to see if Dr Reilly can play a part in ensuring that this new proposal is, at least, given a fighting chance of succeeding.

“The council are committed to developing sport in the North County and cricket is a major part of that plan. This programme gives teachers the basic skills of the game and enables them to pass on what they have learned to their students through fun and active games,” said Niall Mc Guirk, Senior Sports Development Officer. Teachers and parents arriving with little or no knowledge of cricket learned a lot from the four hour

practical course, which explained and demonstrated the basic laws of cricket, how the game works and showed different small sided games that can be played in the schoolyard. Everyone left understanding the game better, had fun, learned to bat and bowl and were all looking forward to trying out these games with their classes. Special thanks have to go to all the schools and teachers who attended.

Deputy Mayor, Ken Farrell will officially open the new Swords Cricket Club pitch on Saturday 28th April. This will be followed by the first Annual Fingal Cricket Cup, a one-day six-a-side cricket tournament involving 12 teams. Swords Cricket Club is one the newest clubs in the North County, formed as recently as 2010 by a group of cricket-loving immigrants who were keen to bring their national sport to the area. As there is no established cricket club in the Swords area, they started a new club which has now formally entered into this year’s Leinster Leagues, participating in Division 10. The club’s first official match will be held on Saturday, 12th May against Pembroke Cricket Club in Sandymount, with the first ever home game being played the following weekend on Sunday, 20th May at their new all weather pitch at Newbridge Demesne, Donabate. The club has worked very closely with Leinster Cricket, the County Council’s Sports Office and Operations Department over the last couple of years. The new artificial pitch is a massive development for the club and will help in the long term future and growth of the club.

She said the decision made no sense and pointed to a school just a few miles away with 16 classrooms, eight of which can’t be filled, which has been given the go ahead for an extension. “The need for the extension at Rush NS has reached crisis point,“ She told the County Leader. “At the moment, we have 717 students on the roll but by next September that will be up in the 730s. The hall is too small for the pupil population as it is but apart from anything else, this extension is not just for the new children coming on board, we need it for the children that are here now.” “It is very disheartening as we have worked so hard to drive this forward with a building sub committee with members of the community who have given up their time voluntarily to help us progress this. Our need for this is a genuine one,” she concluded.

Amy Carey 24 year old Amy Carey from Baldoyle is our next entrant in the Dublin Rose of Tralee. Amy lives at home with her parents and has one sister, two brothers and dog Max. Amy is being sponsored for the Rose festival by Howth Haven Beauty Clinic. She has been working with company UPC for the past five years, which she really enjoys. After working

with the company for so long, Amy felt that it was time to start progressing within the company and started a Home Study programme in Business Management which she has been doing for the past year. “I’m just hoping to branch out into different areas that interest me, so the course was a natural progression for me. I absolutely love my job.” Amy says she wasn’t always necessarily interested in the business side of things, though she did love all the prac-

tical subjects in school, such as engineering. “Our secondary school was very practical and focused a lot on those subjects, which I Ioved. I had planned to pursue a career in engineering, but I ended up starting with UPC and things went from there.” “I really loved singing in school,” she continued “I remember getting first place in our stars in their eyes contest which I was thrilled about! I’m very much a people person and love the creative side of things too.” Amy is a self confessed shopaholic and is big into fitness. The Rose entrant admits she is very much a home bird and doesn’t have the travel bug. “My sister has just left for the States and I miss her terribly but would have no desire to join her, I love home too much,” she said. Despite being a home bird at heart, Amy has done her fair share of travelling when she was in a Marching Band some years ago. “I was a ‘Majorette’ and we travelled all over

Ireland and England and also visited the States, so I’ve seen quite a few places. But at the end of the day, the best part of going away, for me, was coming home.” Through her mother, Amy has worked with the ‘Make A Wish Foundation.’ The charity means a lot to Amy and her family as a close family member was diagnosed with cancer. “It’s really a fantastic organisation and through my work with the Rose, I hope to create more awareness for them.” The Rose of Tralee is something Amy and her family have watched every year and as she loves the whole process, she decided to go for it this year. “It’s something you would never really have the opportunity to do and I loved the whole aspect of the personality contest and meeting new people. I’m just happy to have entered and am enjoying having fun, but should I happen to be crowned, It would be wonderful to be a voice for others.”

NORTH COUNTY LEADER, LEADER HOUSE, NORTH STREET, SWORDS alternatively log on to our website www.northcountyleader.ie or email: jennifer@northcountyleader.ie

Next up talking to the County Leader about her involvement in the Dublin Rose of Tralee is Ashley Reddin from Santry. The 24 year old is an only child, her mother is Carol and her father Derek. She is currently working as a Sales and Online Marketing Manager in the Camden Court Hotel, which she loves: “I’ve been working in the hotel in Events for the past two years and just recently got promoted in the Sales and Marketing field, which I was thrilled

about. ” The Camden Court Hotel are also sponsoring Ashley for this year’s Rose and she would like to thank all the staff for the support she has received. “The hotel has really been fantastic in supporting me for the Rose and has organised some events for it as well. It’s been great to have them behind me.” Ashley’s big interest has always been in marketing so she relishes her job. “I absolutely love it,” she said. Having worked in different hotels for the last five years, she has a vast amount of experience and expertise which she brings to her work. Clearly very ambitious, she also studied at night to gain more experience and knowledge of the area and came out with her degree in Marketing and Events. “It was tough and a long four years, but I was delighted to have the degree at the end of it.” Despite thoro u g h l y enjoying the work she’s doing now, A s h l e y admits she

Eleanor Hession We are getting ever closer to the Dublin Rose of Tralee selection nights and next up, hoping to take the coveted title is Eleanor Hession from Marino. The 24 year old has just recently returned from travelling to Australia and South East Aisa and is delighted to be back on home ground. “I’m definitely a home bird,” she said. Despite taking the plunge and deciding to travel, Eleanor told the County Leader that living over on the other side of the world was not what she expected. “It was a real culture shock and despite having a good job and enjoying being with my friends, I just couldn’t adjust. I lasted around four months and knew I wanted to be back home.” “I’m extremely close to my family,” she continued. “I have loads of nieces and nephews, some who are very young and really didn’t want to miss out on them growing up. I would’ve hated being a stranger to them. Family priorities come first at the end of the day.” Eleanor, who lives with her mother in Marino, said that she never appreciated the Irish culture and the people more than when she was on Australian soil: “There’s just this

openness about the Irish. We would find ourselves gravitating towards others from here simply because they understood that we were adjusting and our sense of humour was the same. It’s even something silly like when I realised that the amount of Father Ted references I used in conversation everyday was unreal. It’s only Irish people that will get them, so it’s the little things like that which you miss.” St. Vincent's GAA Club are sponsoring Eleanor for the festival and she said the club have been nothing but supportive of her in the led up to the selection nights. “I’ve really close ties to the club and would regularly help out there, they’ve just been great so it’s wonderful to have them as my sponsor. Once she left school, the Marino lady trained as a hair dresser and now wants to head back to college. “I enjoyed working as a hair dresser and I think it’s great to have a trade, but since I’ve been back home I’ve decided to go and become a Social Worker. It’s something I always wanted to do.” Though that field of work has always appealed to Eleanor, she felt that she needed some life expe-

rience before she pursued it as a career. “It’s such an emotionally demanding job that I knew that I wanted to have a certain amount of experience in life so that I could really relate to others.” Eleanor’s big passion in life is music. “I love music and am the type that would spend all year saving so I could go to all the festivals and gigs on in the s u m m e r . ” Commenting on her involvement in the Rose, she said she wanted to enter as it’s something she’s never done before: “I love the whole concept of the Rose as a personality contest and I knew it would be a great personal achievement to just be involved in it all. My motto in life is: ‘try to believe, believe to try,’ because if you don’t do both you’ll never know what you can achieve.”

wasn’t always interested in the Hospitality field. “It was more something that I got into gradually. As I started to do the work, I realised that this is where I wanted to be.” During her school life, she went down a slightly different route and was an avid dancer and loved to perform on stage. “I really loved to dance when I was in school,” she said. “I also went to the National School of Performing Arts for a good few years when I was younger. As I grew up, I gradually grew out of it and stopped doing it, which is something that I regret now.” Performing runs in Ashley’s family as her dad, Derek has been working as an actor for

years: “I used to love acting, I think I definitely caught the bug from my dad.” Derek acts in the hugely popular Irish series ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys,’ which has grown increasingly popular over the years. “I think we were all really surprised at how big it became, especially as we weren’t sure if the UK audiences would get the humour in it. But it’s really taken off, which is great.” Wanting to get involved in some charity work, Ashley maximised her event skills and organised a very successful Speed Dating event while she was in college: “We decided to do something for the Irish Heart Foundation and came up with the

Speed Dating idea. We wanted a fun way to raise money for a great cause and ended up raising over €1000 for it.” When asked why she wanted to get involved with the Dublin Rose of Tralee, Ashley said she wanted to see what the experience would be like. “I’m having so much fun and just enjoying it, though of course it would mean the world to me if I did end up being crowned. It would be amazing to represent the County.” In terms of a motto in life Ashley feels that some words once said by icon Marilyn Monroe really resonate with her: ‘A wise girl knows her limits and a smart girl

Enabling A Better Quality Of Life Donabate retail guru, Ken Girvan is the regional manager for the fashion and bric a brac shops that fund Enable Ireland. The charity enables Irish people with disabilities to access technology and services that fall between the state provisions. The Enable Ireland shops ensure that the money that’s generated from donations is channeled into speech and language therapy, hydrotherapy, assistive technology, medical supplies and early learning tools. “We currently have over 3,500 young children that Enable Ireland supports and 200 adults with disabilities. “The idea is to help get the children into mainstream education, so early intervention is very important. In the assistive technologies we fund, the kids are able to communicate with the movement of their eyes or their heads, there’s been great advances in that,” he said. When he started with the charity 15 years ago, what attracted him to the job still holds true today: “The ad appealed to me as the job sounded so varied and interesting.“One day, I’m dealing with builders, the next it’s a corporation or organisation, with the next day maybe working in the shop.” There are 12 shops, mostly in Dublin. From Belfast originally and now living in Donabate, his time spent in commercial retail in Liverpool and Manchester before being posted to Dublin. He is married to Josephine and with two kids Scott (24) and Samantha (21), his family’s well used to the demands of his work. “Oh yes,” he grins, “from time to time they’ve been roped in to volunteer; and quite often asked to clear out their wardrobes too.” Not to mention the charity fun runs, charity cycles and whatnot that Enable Ireland gets up to. If you reckon you’re a fashionista who could shop for Ireland, your opportunity to prove it awaits in Ken’s stores. "Getting the word out to remind people why Enable Ireland needs your old clothes and knick-knacks has become a more pressing issue for the chain of local thrift shops recently. We used to have no issues in securing stock from the public, but now we’re being attacked on three different levels; a lot of shops have opened where they pay money for clothing; there are bogus collectors – people who pretend they are charitable organisations with nothing to do with charity – and then there are people obviously stealing our stock.” Of the second he says: “The general public is becoming wise to these people, but it can be difficult to know; when they’re bogus it isn’t a Dublin or Irish telephone number on the bag; or when you phone the number on the bag, it’s bogus.” Of the most worrying trend to Enable Ireland he says: “We have textile banks around the country; they’re being vandalised and broken into, we’ve tried making them as tamper-proof as possible; but they’ve been set on fire or cut with an angle grinder.” Getting stock into the shops has taken the volunteers and staff to new challenges in securing attractive items for sale. “We ran a ‘give a gift’ campaign in

workplaces, schools and colleges, and we had some success with that last year. That is where we give a smaller bag to make it handier for people to fill, it could be men or women working in the city centre, someone in the organisation or company sets up a collection date and we send a van out to make the collection.” The types of thing they’re looking for are scarves, perfume, jewellery, books, dvds, small ornaments, shoes, curtains or bedlinen. “Once it’s in good condition, absolutely nothing goes to waste, if not sold in the shops, it’s sent off to recycling. Ken’s ready smile gets brighter when asked about the volunteers who keep the show on the road. “They’re from all walks of life and we’d find it extremely difficult to operate without them. There are between eight and 10 volunteers in each shop. A lot of the more elderly volunteers, and they are mostly women, would put the young ones to shame, sometimes I wonder where they get their energy from. “We have very loyal volunteers, some with more than 25 years’ service. Recently, we’ve been approached by a lot more people who’ve lost jobs or whatever and want to get out of the house for a while and have offered to volunteer, so in that sense it’s been good for us.” They get a dig out from time to time from temporary volunteers in their sector, such as the hugely successful promotion that TK Maxx staff ran throughout their stores in April this year. “We were thrilled on so many levels that TK Maxx threw its weight behind the spring promotion,” he smiles. “The way it operated when people donated in through TK Maxx it was a safe and secure drop off point and we will definitely get the benefit of those donations. TK Maxx and all their staff were wonderful, they were so buzzed up about it, it’s absolutely fantastic for us, I think it’s worth something like a quarter of a million to us to have their support.” The nearest branches to County Leader readers are Drogheda, Finglas and Phibsboro, not to mention the city centre branches you might pass on your commute. “We find after Christmas, that spring and the autumn are the times when a lot of people decide they’re doing a big clear out.” Remembering the Catch 22 element of how the recession has helped and hindered the workings of his organisation (“the more this recession bites in, the more people are shopping with us, but as we’re getting less and less stock in”) has meant they need to get more specific with how County Leader readers can help. If you can’t shift your unwanted items on ebay or simply mightn’t have thought that it could be put to such vital service in the local community, think Enable Ireland. “Giving your wardrobe clear-outs to a legitimate charity can off-set some of the health service cutbacks, when our services are required more and more, that’s critical now for the work we do.”

A group of 14 Balbriggan Community College students recently returned home following a hugely successful exchange trip to St Wendel, Germany. It is the second such trip the students have made following the signing of a partnership between the Town Council and the German Municipality in 2008. Having previously spent time in a youth hostel, the students were welcomed by host families this time around. Speaking to the County Leader, Cathaoirleach, Councillor Gráinne Maguire said: “The school exchange is a key part of the Town Council's vision for the partnership and we are delighted to be able to support these exchanges which will forge stronger links between both towns.” “This was the second visit to St. Wendel by students from Balbriggan Community College. Balbriggan also played host to a large number of students and teachers from St. Wendel last October. I have no doubt the students were wonderful ambassadors for Balbriggan and I hope they made lasting friendships in St. Wendel.”

Another Cycle Challenge For DAA One of the more ambitious fundraising events planned for the Dublin Airport Authority’s (DAA) charity of the year is coming up in September when dozens of cyclists will take on the challenge of cycling from Dublin Airport to Barrettstown Castle. The route is yet to be worked out but the idea is that of the Dublin Airport Wheelers, a group that was born out of a similar event last year. In that event, the DAA employees boarded their bicycles in the name of charity and cycled from the airport to Balbriggan and back. This year’s challenge is a much more ambitious one and hopes to raise a huge amount of cash for this year’s DAA Charity of the Year, Barrettstown Camp. Barrettstown Camp was selected to be the beneficiary of all of the DAA staff’s charity fundraising efforts this year after a vote at the beginning of the year. It should be a huge boost for this great charity if last year is anything to go by, when the 2011 DAA Charity of the Year received a whopping cheque for over €200,000 thanks to the efforts of the authority’s staff.

Putting it up for sale out of fun, he set a starting price of just 99p - but bidding quickly rocketed with the auction not due to close on Monday.
