The recent decision of Clare County Council to attempt to withhold third level student grants from people who have not paid their Household Charges, has caused division locally. This decision was backed by Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, who said he expected other councils to follow Clare County Council’s decision to send letters to third-level grant applicants asking them to submit proof they have paid the Household Charge. The County Leader contacted our local authority to see if they had plans to follow the Clare example, they said they would not be following their example. This summer, the three RNLI lifeboat stations in Dublin launched a total of 37 times. Dun Laoghaire launched 18 times, Howth launched 12 times and Skerries a total of seven times. The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. It’s volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the North County and beyond. As it depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service, this invaluable service would not exist without the tireless efforts of all its volunteers and donators. Back in August, Skerries RNLI launched to reports of a yacht drifting on to rocks in the vicinity of Skerries islands. The lifeboat quickly located a 26ft yacht with two people onboard. The yacht was taken under tow by the lifeboat and brought safely to Skerries harbour. The charity’s volunteer crew

members were involved in many different types of call outs to a range of casualties. Both locally and nationwide many of the launches were due to people getting caught out by the tide, problems with their vessel’s engine or machinery, and an increasing range of leisure marine activities. However there were also a number of tragedies and many of the RNLI’s lifeboat crews were involved in searching for missing loved ones or in bringing them home. Speaking to the County Leader, Owen Medland, RNLI Training Divisional Inspector said: “This has been another busy summer for the RNLI despite the unpredictable weather. There have been some stories of incredible bravery and also some stories of devastating loss. In all cases our lifeboat volunteers have shown extreme professionalism and commitment.”

The club welcomes new members at any time of the year with classes taking place every Monday and Wednesday evening from 8pm until 9pm at Rush AFC Clubhouse.

Volunteers are required to assist in the running of a Foróige youth initiative for young people in the Swords area. Foróige is the largest youth development organisation in the country. There are currently 75 Foróige Clubs and youth cafés in Dublin. Foróige provides a social outlet for young people aged 12 and over. Activities are based on the members’ interests and needs. Club members get to learn and develop a variety of new skills and talents. Clubs are very much rooted in

Its not often a person get to that achievement and his will be the first in Portmarnock for over 25 years, which is fantastic. Well done to all the members for all their hard work.

Thirty seven scouts and leaders from Portmarnock scouts spent ten fantastic fun filled days on the Isle of Man during their recent annual camp. They spent two days exploring the Island Heritage and another day hiking around Snaefell Mountain, the highest point on the island. During the camp 12 scouts headed off on the Millennium Way – a forty kilometre route over the mountains from North of the Island to Castletown in the South, and hiked over 26kms as part of their Bronze Gaisce- Presidents Award. They brought tents with them and ovenighted on the hills. The main group had great fun at the Venture Centre where they experienced abseiling,

Welcoming Reception For Catherine McInerney Saunders were delighted to be the official Chartered Accountants for Paralympics Ireland this year. They offered their services free of charge for a three year period and were fully supportive throughout the event. It was in recognition of this support that encouraged Swords lady and Paralympic heroine, Catherine Walsh to call to McInerney Saunders offices recently to

show the staff and partners her Silver and Bronze medals. The firm arranged a very warm reception for Catherine to commend her on her marvellous achievements. Neal Morrison of McInerney Saunders said that, for him, the Paralympic Games was about elite sport – he did not see athletes with disabilities – it was their abilities that he was inspired by – ability to win, to break world records and to achieve personal bests. He told the County Leader: “It is difficult to convey in words the feeling and emotion of watching all the athletes triumph as they did. ”McInerney Saunders congratulates Catherine, her fellow athletes and all the support personnel of Team Ireland and wishes them continued success.”

YOURVIEW hough the games have been and gone, By Pierre Vandevelde Ireland and indeed the North County, has much to be proud of as our athletes did tremendously well during the Olympic and Paralympic games, surpassing everyone's expectations. The County Leader went out and about recently to get the opinion of our locals. We asked them if they felt the country got a boost from the games. Here is what they had to say:

MICHAEL KECWUEY (Swords): Yeah I think it did. We got great coverage on the London Olympics. Any time we perform well in sports it gives the country a bit of a lift. And at the end of the day we need a positive lift, you know. And that’s probably the only good news we have.

MAUREEN REECE (Visitor, Derby England): Yeah, it was a very good lift. I hope they can do it again.

SINÉAD HUGHES (Swords): Yeah I think Ireland did get a lift from the Olympics and the Paralympics. Definitely yes.

TOM FEEHILY (Rush): Yeah, I think it was a big boost. You know, it’s like a big football match, we need to get together. Yeah, it was a big boost.

FRANK REDMOND (Swords): Of course it did. And everyone admired the athletes that went to the Paralympics. Whether they get home with a medal or not, simply participating is a marvellous achievement for them and for our country.

GERALDINE SHERIDAN (Swords): I think the Paralympics should have got more television coverage, advertisements or something. They performed marvellously well at the Paralympics but they didn’t get enough coverage. That’s all I have to say.

Announcement Of Balbriggan Primary Care Centre Welcomed Local councillor, Tom O’Leary (FG) has welcomed the announcement of a new primary care centre for Balbriggan by the Minister for Health James Reilly TD. “The HSE has signed an agreement to lease with the proposers of this excellent new primary care centre for Balbriggan and I am informed, as part of that agreement that planning permission is expected to be lodged to the County Council next month,” said O’Leary. “I know that this primary care centre in Balbriggan has been a priority for myself and Minister Reilly for some time.” O’Leary continued, “The existing HSE Health Centre which has served the people for a long time is in a dilapidated condition for some time and the people of Balbriggan deserve a new modern state of the art primary care centre with modern diagnostic facilities available locally to the people in Balbriggan. I understand the local GPs are broadly supportive of this project and look forward to the new facility becoming available to their patients as soon as possible,” he concluded. Meanwhile, Cllr. Ciaran Byrne (Lab)

says that data on disadvantage supports the inclusion of Balbriggan on the Department of Health’s Primary Care Centre Priority list. Byrne said that “parts of the media has sought to portray Minister of State Shortall as opposed to the inclusion of Balbriggan. In fact, in

her Dail speech, she was merely insisting that Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly TD, publish the written rationale for such an inclusion in the priority list, in the interests of political transparency and fairness. “Furthermore, in her speech on Friday at the launch of Community Safety Week in Balbriggan, Minister Shortall acknowledged the need for a primary heath care in the town.

“Her concern has been to ensure that the provision of essential services and facilities across the country is fair and does not revert to the kind of stroke politics practised in this country for decades that led directly to the crash of the Celtic Tiger,” said Byrne. He went on to say that the data s u p p o r t i n g Balbriggan’s inclusion in the priority list actually exists. “Three years ago, during my term as Chairman of the Fingal Leader Partnership, we undertook additional research that conclusively showed that the level of disadvantage in Balbriggan was higher than Government statistics suggested. Former Minister Pat Carey was so convinced by this additional information that, at a time of severe cutbacks, he made extra funds available for services for the unemployed in the town.” Byrne continues, “Current data shows that the situation has deteriorated since then. So, as there is a direct correlation between disadvantage and poor health in the population, the argument for a primary health care centre in Balbriggan is therefore valid.”

I didn’t pay that much attention to the Paralympics, but we did very very well and it was a good lift, yes. A US woman who went missing in the early hours of the morning had gone for a swim in the river – while sleepwalking. The 31-yearold was reported missing by her husband who awoke to find her gone. She had left the home barefoot, wearing only pyjamas, and left a sliding door open. Deputies found her a quarter of a mile downstream from her home on a sandbank. She was safe but disorientated and soarking wet after apparently swimming while still asleep.

O’Brien Selected As Green Candidate Last Thursday, 20th September, the Bracken Court Hotel in Balbriggan saw the rebirth of the Green Party in the North County. The selection convention for the local election candidate for the Balbriggan Ward (which also includes Skerries, Rush, Lusk and much of rural North County), saw no less than four candidates vying for the position. After an evening of passionate speeches and hard questioning, Skerries man Joe O’Brien (35) was successful. O’Brien currently works as a Policy Officer with the NGO Crosscare Migrant Project which works with Irish emigrants, returning Irish emigrants and new immigrants to Ireland. Afterwards, he said, Joe O’Brien “The Green Party in the North County is on the road back. After learning from difficult local and general elections, we are now stronger and wiser. We have regrouped and renewed and now we start the fight to show the people of the area that the Green message is more important than ever.” He continued, “I believe it is vital we have a Green perspective on the Council to oversee and monitor issues like sewage treatment, water quality, planning and how the natural resources of the North County are protected. The development of a monster sewage plant in particular makes the need for the Green representation on the Council particularly pressing.” “We need to show that the Green way is at the same time the most immediate and best long term way of giving something back,” he concluded.

Feeling Blue In Colaiste Choilm Students and staff of Colaiste Choilm in Swords were all in blue last Friday, 21st September. But no need to worry, it was all by way of celebrating an historic occasion for the school. They wore their blue Dublin jerseys to celebrate the fact that two recently graduated students have achieved great success on the GAA fields. Cahal Flynn and Eoin Howard are on the Dublin minor football and minor hurling panels respectively. Cahal, who plays for Ballyboughal, repre-

sented Dublin minor footballers in last Sunday’s epic encounter with neighbours, Meath, while Eoin, from Whitehall Colmcille, will be on duty against Tipperary in the replayed hurling final on Sunday. Both lads paid a trip back to the school on Friday last, amid great excitement from their former colleagues. Teacher and coach, Sinead Hynes said the school was giddy with excitement. “The lads in the school are thrilled to see familiar faces taking centre stage at Croke Park and they are a credit to the school. Everyone was glued to the telly to see Cahal and the same will happen again on Sunday for Eoin. We’re so proud of both of them,” she said.

Malahide Woman Involved In Cancer Campaign Local lady, Sheila Morris from Malahide is involved in a brand new Breast Cancer Campaign called ‘Get the Girls.’ Sheila is one of the founders of ‘Get The Girls.’ She has been involved in fundraising for breast cancer research in the North County for some time. She got involved as she was personally touched by cancer several years ago. Her sister passed away from leukaemia 47 years ago and as a

result she was driven to support the Irish Cancer Society and fundraise to do her bit. A few of the ladies on her fundraising team have suffered from breast cancer, so there is a great local effort to get involved. The campaign was launched as part of the Irish Cancer Society. It asks women around the North County and beyond to do their bit for breast cancer research this October.

Update On New Mental Health Units In Portrane Deputy Brendan Ryan (LAB) placed a Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Health in which he asked the position regarding the proposal to move the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum to Portrane in North County. He also asked the stage the proposal is at and if there are any timescales on how the proposal is progressing. A kangaroo has escaped from a German zoo – with helps from his accomplices, a fox and a wild boar. Three kangaroos originally got out of their enclosure after a helpful fox dug a hole next to the fence. Two of three were then able to escape the park entirely through another hole dug by a wild boar under the exterior boundary. Vets had managed to snare one of the pair after a long chase. The other one had managed to stay one hop ahead of authorities.

Great Start For Applewood Community Centre Faces were painted, castles bounced and magic tricks were performed all to the

delight of children from Swords and beyond. The local community centre in

Applewood was the place to be as it held its first ever Family Fun Day recently. Applewood Community Centre is only months old but has already woven itself into the fabric of the local community. The large attendance on the day was solid proof of this.

Toilet Paper Wedding Dress A US woman has won a toilet paper wedding dress contest for the second year running with a stunning outfit made from 10 jumbo rolls. Susan Brennan scooped the equivalent of nearly £1,300 prize money. She said it took her just a week to make the dress for the competition: "I wanted something really original, something young brides would want to wear," the 26-year-old designer said.

Amid the obligatory face painting and bouncy castles, there was a whole host of entertainment and fun provided by local groups who came to add music and dance to the occasion. The good people at the Community Centre have publicly thanked all the groups involved in making the day such a roaring success.

It's thanks to the pupils at Balbriggan Community College that the Roseate tern population on Rockabill is in such rude good health .

For nearly 20 years woodwork students at the college have made nesting boxes for Birdwatch Ireland . Each year another batch is

delivered in readiness for the breeding season and now there are over 700 boxes on Rockabilll. The Nationwide programme,

whichwill be screened on Friday September 28th at 7pm, brought three students to Rockabill this year to see just how the boxes

have helped the terns. Nationwide presenter Ann Cassin, herself a native of Balbriggan, came over to Rockabill in July to see the chicks take their first flight.

The TV programme will feature the students of Balbriggan Community College making a new housing estate for the terns which has been named "Halpo's

Landing" in recognition of their Principal . Also featured are local photographers Eamon and Christine O'Daly who made three trips over to Rockabill this

Summer to capture the beauty of the bird life. The Rockabill Roseate tern project was started by the North County branch of Birdwatch Ireland.

he fantastic performance of Balbriggan Tidy Towns in improving their marks by 10 points on last year in the recent Tidy Towns competition, is a talking point among retailers and residents alike. In the process, the town has been awarded recognition for this herculean effort, in the form of the Achiever Award for the County. This is the second year in a row that the town has been honoured with this award.

A very noticeable feature of the town is the number of beautiful floral displays the length of the town. What a joy it is to see shop fronts awash with colour, providing a very welcoming aspect and feel. The many historic buildings were beautifully maintained and it was very obvious that a number of interested parties came together in unison to ensure that Balbriggan never looked better. The report from the adjudicators was p a r t i c u l a r l y favourable. "The general impression among the adjudicating committee was that Balbriggan has a new energetic committee, full of enthusiasm and is engaging well with all the relevant bodies to create a much improved town, with

better facilities for people to have and to visit. The town has the potential to improve, and the Tidy Towns group has the ability to move things forward." The adjudicators started at St George's Square and noted that "Balbriggan has taken on a plaza appearance. In this area, the fine stone Court House, the Library with its clock tower, new Town Hall and the Bracken Court Hotel makes the town centre very attractive.

The new energy efficient steel lamps with no overhead wires add a very modern touch to an area of great historic value." They also noted the floral displays and stated, "All year round planting not only provides colour for the year and a natural wildlife habitat, but cuts down on costs and resources associated with annual planters. Alan Leetch Memorial Day Blows The Lights Out The Alan Leetch Memorial Family Fun Day was held at Fingallians GAA grounds recently. The Alan Leetch fund was set-up after the death of their friend, brother, and son Alan Leetch, nicknamed Screech. He took his life at the end of March of this year. The committee wanted to bring to light, the problem of suicide in Ireland. This committee

aims to raise money and bring awareness of this problem in order to help people see that it’s not the only way out. The Event will now become an annual thing. It was truly a momentous day with in excess of €60,000 being raised. Money will being given to Pieta House, Console, Fingal Bereaved by Suicide Support Service and the Irish Men’s

Group. Everything that was involved and everyone involved all offered their services for free, the community of Swords and everyone connected to Alan Leetch really came together to show their love and support. There were lots of activities during the day, including a 5-aside soccer tournament, a Cake Sale, tea and coffee, BBQ,

discovering new places, different ways to live and meeting new people. I also love learning new languages and improving old ones. I have been here for three weeks and I have already made good friends, which of course makes my experience that much more enjoyable. I have mostly explored the city centre of Dublin but I definitely will see much more around as weeks go by. It’s also my first week working at the County Leader. So far, I have a feeling that it will be a great experience.

Portmarnock Student Gets Into The Swing Of Things A Portmarnock student has completed a golfing marathon by playing five courses on the Donabate peninsula in one day. Conor Bradshaw is a 15-year-old student at Portmarnock Community School and a talented golfer. Next February, he will join a number of transition year students from the school on their now annual trip to Lesotho to help the charity Action Ireland Trust. In order to do that, each student has to raise cash for the charity and Conor came up with the fundraising idea of playing all five golf courses on the Donabate Peninsula in one day and asked people to sponsor him to take on the challenge. New Season For Local Athletics League The London 2012 Olympics may be over but for hundreds of North County schoolchildren interested in athletics, their year is only beginning. Last year 33 schools and approximately 1200 students took part and this year, the organisers are hoping for more!

Schools from all over the North County can choose to enter one of two leagues in Balheary Park in Swords. Schools can enter a maximum of 50 pupils, both boys and girls (who’ll race separately) from 3rd – 6th class with race distances ranging from approximately 250 – 550 metres

Beaverstown Golf Club and managed to complete the course in 78 strokes. Then it was on to The Island Golf Club where he completed the 18 holes in 81 strokes before heading off to Corballis and the best score of the day of 72 strokes. After a short break, Conor played Balcarrick Golf Club in 77 strokes and finally, he played Donabate Golf Club, the club of which he is a proud member, and he got around that familiar course in 73 strokes. Conor’s dad Paul caddied for the first four golf courses and played alongside Conor on their home course. The Captain of Donabate Golf Club, Michael Galvin, walked the last few holes with Conor with a number of supporters who were there to cheer him on as he narrowly missed a birdie putt on the 18th to complete an exhausting day. Conor has raised in the region of €2,000 for Action Ireland Trust for his efforts. The trust is an organisation helping the poor of Lesotho in Africa where people are suffering with high levels of HIV Aids and TB. depending on the age group. There will be three race meets in the respective venue before the Finals Day in May 2013. Skerries Lawn Tennis Club held their annual championship finals day on September 15th last. They were the first championships on the new courts, located at Skerries Community Centre. The finals saw some great battles on court, including both Rob Carr and Kevin Branigan getting into three finals each, namely the Men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles finals, with Rob shining in all three events and taking home three winners prizes. There was a great attendance on the day both at the court side and

at the award’s night which was held in Skerries Sailing club that evening. Catering was provided by Aisling Smith with the help of others, including Clodagh Zomer. A great day and night was had by all. Winners on the day included, Rob Carr in the Men’s singles, Annie Purcell in the Ladies A Singles, Lynda Kennedy in the Ladies A Plate and Ailise Furlong winning the Ladies B Singles. Other winners included, Adrienne in the Ladies B Plate, Rob Carr and Liam Timmons in the Men’s Doubles Mixed Doubles. Find Your Rush Roots A committee is currently being formed to establish a Rush Open Organisation for Transition Status (ROOTS). The transition organisation geographically closest to Rush is the Transition Town Portrane Donabate (TTDP), which has been very successful since it was set up two years ago. It is a small group, which has managed to make a big impact with projects such as: a popular thriving farmer’s market held in Donabate every Saturday, a G Day’ event promoted and televised by TG4, which succeeded in turning the area into a mini Gaeltacht for

one day, a series of free training courses in food preparation and marketing, a cycle group which organises weekly cycling trips plus much more. The TTDP group currently have many more exciting projects planned and ROOTS would like to emulate some of this success. ROOTS will be formally launched at a public meeting to be held in Rush Community Centre close to the Christmas season. Even though it’s a few months away, locals are encouraged to get their thinking caps on early and bring up any issues they may have at the meeting.The meeting will be addressed by Trevor Sargent of the Green Party and by Sean Gibbons of TTDP. As result of their hard work, Ruari Quinn has recognised their significant expression of interest and said that more decision will be made for Balbriggan in the near future. Swords Lady In Fashion Final Edel Toal from Swords is one of only 20 contestants to reach the finals of a fashion competition. Edel, who is the only finalist in the North County area, beat a staggering 6,000 applicants to reach the final stages of the SimplyBe.ie contest and, if she wins, she’ll become a spokesperson and model for the clothing line. Speaking to the County Leader, Edel says she was completely shocked when she got a callback as she wasn’t even aware she was entered into the competition to begin with. “My husband entered me in as a surprise when he saw the advertisment on television, as he thought I’d be a really good candidate.” “I would never have thought of doing anything like this before, but I just went for the interview with them anyway, just to see,” she continued. “They really promote a very healthy body image and made me feel totally at ease when I went in.” She says she was delighted to get into the finals and regardless of the outcome, is happy to be involved. Too many being needlessly 'de-feeted' by Diabetes There are believed to be 250,000 people with diabetes in Ireland and one third of these are thought to be undiagnosed . The New York Times (August 20, 2007) reported 'Although the health implications of diabetes are clear, researchers are still struggling to understand many of the aspects of the disease. One question being asked is why most people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese, when most overweight or obese people are not diabetics? The fat cells themselves may offer a clue. These cells release triglycerides and free fatty acids into the blood, which may decrease cells ability to respond to insulin, thereby increasing the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demand for the hormone. Paradoxically, another hormone, adiponectin, is also made by fat cells, and this hormone makes cells more responsive to insulin. According to Dr. C. Ronald Kahn, a diabetes researcher and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, the fatter you are, the less adiponectin your fat cells produce. Therefore, one way obesity might increase your risk of developing diabetes is by an increased release of fatty acids, combined with a decline in adiponectin, which would lead to more insulin resistance. If your bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demand for insulin cannot be met, diabetes eventually sets in.

Diabetic foot wounds are one of the major complications of diabetes and an excellent example of the type of complicated wound which can be treated with hyperbaric oxygen. It is well known that many diabetics suffer circulatory disorders that create inadequate levels of oxygen to support wound healing. Diabetic wounds present a major problem for modern health care. The foot is the most common site of infection in the diabetic. For diabetic patients, foot problems remain the number one reason for hospital admission.. The therapeutic use of oxygen under pressure is known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and has been used to assist wound healing for almost 40 years. HBOT has several specific biological actions which can enhance the healing processes: â&#x20AC;˘ Oxygen used under pressure (hyperbaric oxygen) can assist wound healing. â&#x20AC;˘ can be used successfully in hypoxic or ischemic wounds such as diabetic, venous stasis ulcers, failing grafts and flaps, necrotising soft tissue infections and refractory osteomyelitis. â&#x20AC;˘ In wound healing, hypoxia is

an insufficient supply of oxygen which prevents normal healing processes. HBOT provides the oxygen needed to stimulate and support wound healing. â&#x20AC;˘ HBOT is able to combat clinical infection such as gas gangrene by acting directly on anaerobic bacteria, enhancing leukocyte and macrophage activity and potentiating the effects of antibiotics. â&#x20AC;˘ HBOT is a safe non-invasive, non-toxic therapy. Hypoxia (lack of oxygen) can be defined as an insufficient supply of oxygen to allow the healing process to proceed at a normal rate. In a typical wound care treatment, hyperbaric oxygen is capable of providing tissue oxygen levels of greater than 11 times normal values. Most chronic wounds are hypoxic and HBO provides the oxygen needed to stimulate and support wound healing. In properly selected patients with hyperbaric oxygen treatment the success rate is high and there are few absolute contraindications. HBOT in properly selected cases, has been effective in preventing amputations, speeding up healing of chronic ulcers and fistulae, saving threatened skin flaps and permitted surgery that would not have been possible without it. This in turn results in improved quality of life for patients. The incidence of amputa-

tion in diabetics remains unacceptably high: 6 per 1,000 patients. Diabetics account for 50 - 70 percent of all amputations performed each year. 10% of those surgeries resulted in the loss of a foot, 35% involved the loss of a lower leg, and 30% resulted in the loss of the knee joint. Ipsilateral or higher amputation occurs in 24% of cases. Diabetic amputees also experience other difficulties. Only 50% of the patients survive more than 3 years after the amputation (USA survey data). Although many individuals who lose limbs traumatically can expect to be rehabilitated to full activity, only 40 - 50% of elderly amputees can expect to enjoy such a successful outcome. The duration of hospitalisation for treatment of diabetic foot infections averages 22-36 days. Amputation offers a poor solution. Patients pay high personal costs when limbs are lost. When an amputation occurs, patients generally remain hospitalised for 40 days and to maximise walking ability or potential, patients may need an additional 6-9 months of rehabilitation. Many elderly diabetic amputees remain bound to wheelchairs for the rest of their lives because they lack sufficient energy, balance, and strength to walk.

Diabetic Ulcers and Amputations Canada's national newspaper, the Globe and Mail, dedicated an entire front page to an article by reporter Christine Blatchford which highlighted the fact that that 70% of amputations due to diabetic complications need never have taken place if HBOT had been used to treat them. The article said, "Since 2001, there have been four randomised, controlled clinical trials of HBOT on diabetic ulcers - the gold standard in evidence-based medicine. All studies found either markedly fewer amputations with patients who received HBOT compared to those who didn't, or enormously improved healing."
