Restoration Of Iconic Swords Church A Priority The restoration of, arguably, the most historically important building is Swords, has now become an urgent priority. St Columba’s Church, which dominates the skyline over Swords, has been closed to worshippers for the past year, after a large portion of the ceiling caved in. The site

Reverend Canon Robert Deane told the County Leader, “The cost of restoring the ceiling and church to its former glory would be about €500,000, which far exceeds the capability of the relatively small number of parishioners. From the safety aspect, the church cannot be used again until restoration and repair work is done. At present, our congregation worships at the nearby Old Boro School,” he said. Members of the Friends of St Columba’s Church are continuing to work tirelessly to raise the funds needed, but they face an uphill battle. This small dedicated group needs as much help as possible, and the hope is, that tourism chiefs will get their heads together and realise what a valuable revenue making resource that the restoration of this church presents. It must be said that the County Council have been proactive in realising the potential of the church, and they have nominated St Columba’s Church as their chosen charity at the St Patrick’s Day parade and the Brian Boru and Flavours of Fingal festivals. However, more is needed, and the hope is that this can be realised in the near future. A major problem is the heating in the church, which has been described as ‘prehistoric’ and this is believed to be a significant issue. Canon Deane added, “There is a real possibility that the entire ceiling could collapse, if remedial work is not undertaken soon, but this is all dependent on funds. The situation is not beyond repair, but funds are urgently needed,” he said. See information on the history of St Columba’s Church and comment on page 13
being fully aware of the vast potential of these sites, which attract many visitors, bringing much needed revenue to these communities. So, why is there no urgency in restoring such an iconic building, that could reap the same benefits as the aforementioned sites? St Columba’s Church is situated on the ruins of an ancient monastery, built by St Columba, and the Round Tower there dates from the 9th century. The monastery was in the news earlier this year, as the place where Brian Boru and his son, Murrough were waked after the Battle of Clontarf a thousand years ago. There was great relief for residents of Holywell estate in Swords on Wednesday last, 20th August, when the much needed Ring Road was opened. The project was conceived with the dual aims of removing through traffic from the residential areas of Holywell, so that the previously enhanced and upgraded pedestrian facilities, adjacent to the school, community and local shopping centre can be utilised to their maximum. Effectively the new road will take all heavy traffic, including trucks away from the residential part of the estate. The development was warmly welcomed by local senator, Darragh

The County Council has been shortlisted in six categories for the 2014 Excellence in Local Government Awards. The Local Authority have been nominated for awards in categories of: Supporting Tourism, Supporting Active Communities, Citizen Engagement, Smarter Travel, Best Library Service and Joint Local Authority Initiative. Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG), was delighted with the news, and told the County Leader: “The fact that the Council have been shortlisted in more categories than any other local authority
in the country, is testament to the hard work undertaken by them in co-operation with local organisations throughout the area,” he said. He continued: “In the supporting tourism category, the Council has been nominated for the Ireland V England Cricket Match which took place last year. I would like to congratulate the Council, Malahide Cricket Club officers and members, the ground staff, and the volunteers who were instrumental in making this event such a success. This nomination can be attributed to the hard work of all involved.” “It is encouraging to see that the work of our local authority is consistently among the best in Ireland and I am pleased that this is being recognised, despite the ongoing constraints of reduced funding,” Farrell concluded. The awards will take place on November 13th.

Balbriggan And Swords Lead Way With Defibrillators

Rivervalley In A Blooming Good State Rivervalley/Rathingle Residents Association and Hilltown Environmental Awareness Group have been very busy over the summer months, keeping the area in wonderful condition. Gerry White, Chairman Hilltown Environmental Group told the County Leader, “We are delighted with the hard work of all our volunteers over the last four months in preparation for the local Tidy Towns and Fingal County Council competitions. All their efforts have paid off and Rivervalley/Rathingle estate has not looked better in over 10 years,” he said. They have a total of six flower beds around the estate, with over 1,200 bedding plants. The
On foot of the recent surge to have defibrillators placed in prominent locations around towns in the North County, Balbriggan is the latest town to have one. It is on display in Scanlan’s Garage, near the Church on Dublin Street, and is available for public use. Colin Hughes, proprietor of Scanlan’s Garage told Pictured outside Swords Garda Station, with the new defibrillator, which will be located at the station are, Garda Tom the County Leader, “I watched a demonstration Murphy, co-sponsor, Robbie Knight (Mid Knight), Michelle (DX2 Training Solutions), Darragh Lawlor, co-sponsor Keith Lawlor (Old School House pub) and Sgt Terry Donoghue which was given by Pat Gibbons and Berni Adamson of Berrick Occupational and First Aid Resources, who provide first aid and CPR training. It was on my mind for some time to get involved in first aid training. This spurred me on to complete the course and, as a result of doing the course, I discovered that there are very few defibrillators in the area. We went a step further and decided to buy our own. It’s an expensive item, but not if it saves a life,” said Colin. Pat Gibbons, whose company supplied the device said, “It is important that as many people as possible, should be trained in CPR, as well as defibrillator training.” Meanwhile, the concerted efforts of Darragh Lawlor, the Pavilions Swords Security staff member, who played such a leading role in highlighting the need for defibrillators to be located in public places, seem to be reaping dividends. Swords now has a second defibrillator, which is located in the Pictured with the new defibrillator for Balbriggan, which will be located at Scanlan's Garage Garda station. Great Charity Walk In Oldtown The ninth year of the ‘Great Cappagh Walk’ will take place next month. Each year in Oldtown, a local resident organises a charity walk, all in aid of Cappagh Hospital. By participating in the charity walk, former patients are proudly showing their huge appreciation for the hospital. The walk is now an annual event, and is organised every year by Balbriggan man Leo Halpin, who had his hip replaced in

There will also be a farmer’s market and a barbecue, and two tickets for the All-Ireland Football Final will also be raffled (along with a whole host of other prizes) on the day. Thousands of euros has been raised for the hospital over the years, and Leo couldn’t be more
grateful for all the support. “We started out by raising a few hundred early on, and now we usually raise around €9,000 every year, which is fantastic,” he told the County Leader. “I want to thank all our local sponsors and everyone who comes out to walk for such a great cause.” I was in the hospital for a fortnight and I have never had a pain or ache since,” he explained. “Because I was so uncomfortable before my surgery, for years I never slept much, so I wanted to thank them for all that they did for me. The walk is my way of doing that.” All are welcome to come and support this wonderful cause.

The aim of the challenge was to raise money for a special youth suicide prevention project. Ed O’ Donnell from Malahide and Amanda Ni Ghabhann from Baldoyle both successfully completed the challenge. A team of 19 people took part in the challenge overall. “Doing the Five Peaks was something that I have always wanted to do,” Malahide man, Ed told the County Leader. I have climbed some of the highest mountains around the world, but it still took me almost 30 years to get around to taking on this challenge. I am delighted to have participated and raised the funds for HeadsUp, a really worthwhile charity. Local mental health support service, Jigsaw, based in Balbriggan, are looking for new premises. The group brings together community and statutory services to support the mental health and wellbeing of young people around the locality. Armin Krautgasser, Project Manager for Jigsaw North Fingal told the County Leader: “Three hundred young people have accessed direct mental health supports in Jigsaw’s Balbriggan Hub. A further 1,800 young people have participated in a mental health literacy awareness programme. Given this demand and need for the service, Jigsaw has already outgrown its existing premises in Balbriggan. In order to continue fulfilling this need the project urgently requires new Balbriggan town centre premises.” “In order to ensure maximum accessibility, we require a wheelchair accessible central location in Balbriggan,” he explained. “Over the last two months, we have been looking into premises in Balbriggan, however, we have not
been able to find a suitable premises in the area. We would be grateful if the community would help us find the ideal town centre location for the service in Balbriggan.” Speaking recently about the service, Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly said: “Countless young people have affirmed that their interaction with Jigsaw improved their sense of well-being thus avoiding a potential downward spiral. In the case of Balbriggan I would encourage civic leaders and others to try and help this group to find the optimum location to continue doing its work,” he said.

Indeed, this is a stressful time for parents too, as they try and adapt to this changeable time of year. Try To Re-establish Routines Plan to re-establish the bedtime and mealtime routines (especially breakfast) at least one week before school starts. Prepare your child for this change by talking with your child about the benefits of school routines in terms of not becoming over tired or overwhelmed by school work and activities. Include pre-bedtime reading and household chores if these were suspended during the summer. Encourage your child to play quiet games, do puzzles, flash cards, colour, or read as early morning activities instead of watching television. This will help ease your child into the learning process and school routine. If possible, maintain this practice throughout the school year. Television is distracting for many children, and your child will arrive at school better prepared to learn each morning if he or she has engaged in less passive activities.

New Local Drugs Task Force To Make Huge Difference The North Dublin Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force has now moved it’s office to the Town Centre Mall in Swords, and is set to provide an essential new service for people and families in the local area, devastated by drug and alcohol abuse. “This is a fully resourced community care team and in the past ten years, there has never been a service comparable to this,” said Chairperson of the Task Force, Senator Darragh O’Brien. “We now have professionals, like clinicians who are working in the area to help families who are dealing with drug and alcohol problems. In just 10 weeks, we have had 66 referrals, from families and from people all over the North County area. This shows that this is a badly needed service and our new location in the Town Centre Mall, is easily accessible, with ample parking and the new centre has proper counselling and training rooms,” he said.
O’Brien continued, “Speaking to our GPs and to Curam, the adult mental health service, we have referrals from them and we are building up this service, with a fully qualified team of professionals, who will act as case officers for an individual. If someone comes in and they have an issue, say in the drugs area for example, they will be put in the care of a case officer. We will deal with all of the relevant agencies on their behalf and try to work them out of their addiction, and to show them a way forward,” he said. Clinical Operations Manager at the National Treatment Centre, Seamus Noone was very upbeat about the new service, when he told the County Leader, “I have been involved in this partnership for the past few years and there have been great developments in the past few months, and we have been working in partnership with the North Dublin Regional

The opportunity is there to work with marginalised groups in the area. It’s a great day for Swords,” he concluded.
This community care service provides support for under 18s and adults, who are experiencing problems with drugs and/ or alcohol. It is also for family members, who are impacted by a loved one’s drug or alcohol use. This is a free, walk-in service and referrals can be made through your GP, or individuals can refer themselves, or be referred by another individual.

Malahide Girl Appointed San Francisco Brand Ambassador Malahide graduate, Katie O’Donoghue has been appointed by Tullamore Dew, the world’s second largest Irish whiskey maker, as the brand’s new San Francisco brand ambassador. Katie will be based in San Francisco and is one of four new US brand ambassadors recruited by Tullamore Dew to help capitalise on its strong growth in the US market, and the opening of its new distillery in Tullamore this September. Malahide-based Katie, will begin an 18 month programme of educating and advocating Irish
whiskey and Tullamore Dew in particular later this month. She was chosen alongside her three new colleagues from a total of 1,300 post-graduate applicants for her blend of confidence, charisma and commercial focus to promote the brand to an American audience. This unique opportunity for Kate and the talented Irish graduates was offered through the IBEC/Bord Bia Export Orientation Programme (EOP). The group already has three Ambassadors based in New York and Florida, and she will be the latest edition to their team.

nesses battling it out for the title. The Clarke Perpetual Cup was awarded to the Old Schoolhouse Bar and Restaurant for the second year in a row for their magnificent floral displays. Second place went to the Harp Bar, Carnegie Court Hotel, and third place was awarded to Tirconaill B&B, Longlands. The competition was open to all businesses in Swords, big or small, and had the support of County Council and Swords Tidy Towns Committee. The aim was to recognise and
appearance, and other floral displays which enhanced the overall appearance of the premises. The winners were announced at the Fingal Horticultural Show, which was held in the Old Borough school recently. There were over 530 exhibits ranging from flowers to pot plants, vegetables, fruit, eggs, baking, paintings, photography, handcrafts and special children’s section. The show is one of the oldest traditions in Swords, and is now in its 72nd year.
Local Film Festival Kicks Off Fingal Film Festival have announced their opening night film premiere. The doors open at 7:30pm on the 26th September at Movies@swords in the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Swords. “Palo Alto” is directed by Gia Coppola, and stars James Franco and Emma Roberts. The film is due for Irish theatrical release on the 3rd October. Limited tickets are available now.
The latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL), has revealed that the North County continues to uphold a high standard of cleanliness by national and European comparisons. Seventy five per cent of towns and cities surveyed by IBAL were found to be as clean as, or cleaner than their European counterparts. Swords was one of 18 towns deemed cleaner than the European average, while Dublin Airport and environs was considered to be clean to European Norms. The survey also found a dramatic improvement in the condition of roads to and from Dublin Airport. The IBAL survey found that sweet papers were by far the most common form of litter, followed by cigarette butts, fast food wrappers and chewing gum. The Council’s Environmental Awareness Officer, Edwina Dunford, urged members of the locality to continue to show good example by using public bins provided for all kinds of litter and to take rubbish home where bins are full. IBAL contends that residents associations, tidy towns groups and other volunteers are compensating for the scarcity of resources in local authorities in many towns, and indeed our local Tidy Towns across the locality are doing a marvellous job, keeping our local streets spick and span. For the first time, IBAL inspected the cleanliness of connecting routes between towns, which were found to be typically more littered than the towns themselves. The survey found that sweet papers were by far the most common form of litter, followed by cigarette butts, fast food wrappers and chewing gum.

History Of St Columba’s Church St Columba’s Church is a beautiful Georgian building on a hill overlooking the town of Swords and was built in 1817. The site has been a centre of Christian worship for over 14 centuries, since St Columba established his renowned monastery here in the 6th century. This ancient site is home to a 9th century Round Tower, which is one of the best preserved and oldest one in the country. It is also home to a 14th century Square Tower. Throughout the centuries, as the reputation of St Columba increased, his monastery grew to become the most important in Ireland. By the 9th century, it’s significance was such that Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland, and his son Murrough, were waked here following their deaths at the Battle of Clontarf, a thousand years ago this year.
The present church was constructed on the ruins of the old monastery and was designed by Francis Johnston, who also designed many of Ireland’s finest buildings, including the GPO and the Chapel Royal at Dublin Castle
Comment The recently released tourism figures show a very welcome increase of 10 per cent in overseas visitors this year. The vast majority of these will experience their first taste of Ireland at Dublin Airport, a mere two miles from such an important historical site, as St Columba’s Church, graveyard and Round Tower. It seems a pity to let this golden opportunity slip through our fingers, because we haven’t the resources, nor the will to bring such a great building back to it’s former glory, for a relatively small cost. A 10 minute journey to a fully developed historical site, would be an ideal first impression for any visitor. This, allied to the full restoration of Swords Castle, would make the town a very important heritage venue.

Reduction In Back To School Costs Welcomed Local deputy, Alan Farrell (FG), has stated that the fact that back to school costs are falling, as outlined in Barnardos’ School Costs Survey, is positive news for families throughout the North County. He told the County Leader, “Many families face increased stress when back to school time comes around each year. I am pleased that the costs associated with children returning to school are falling at both primary and secondary level, and in particular, that the costs of school uniforms and books are falling.” “It is encouraging that more school book rental schemes have been introduced in schools throughout the country and such schemes can do a great deal to alleviate the financial pressure faced by parents at this time of year.” He continued, “I would, once again, urge parents who may qualify for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance to apply. This allowance will be automatically approved for those families who have previously qualified and are deemed eligible again this year, without the need
for them to re-apply.” “The Government is committed to supporting families who need assistance, as they prepare their children to return to school. and I will continue to work in the best interests of school and families throughout the constituency,” he concluded.

Policies Under Pressure With a leading authority on unemployment describing Eurozone polices as “stunningly destructive’, some noted world economists have again expressed concerns that the recovery, if any, is not long term and that recession in Europe may last well into the future. The French economy is experiencing zero growth, and Germany’s has contracted in the last quarter, while Italy is heading towards a triple dip recession, with Premier Renzi rebutting suggestions that his Government is set to raise taxes and cut pensions to stay within the 3 per cent GDP limits. Germany’s financial daily, Handelsblatt, depicts France as the sick man of Europe as President Hollande calls for the Euro to be weakened. Some leading economists have launched quite an attack
By Cathal Boland on current EU policies, warning that unless changed, they may result in a fresh debt crisis. All is leading to renewed speculation that Mario Draghi will retreat from the ECB’s long-term policies and opt for quantitive easing. Germany is still committed to low inflation, and Chancellor Merkel says it is difficult to manage a monetary system across 18 countries, when the sovereign parliaments refuse to implement the agreed policies of the European institutions. But she points out that crisis countries have cut their current account deficits and that lasting recovery is now obtainable. The geo-political problems have yet to show their full effects. The effects of the “Ukrainian sanctions” have not yet worked their way through the economic
systems, and analysis of their cost is awaited. The Russian counter sanctions have caused Dutch lenders to flag that their agri. sector will face liquidity problems. The Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia are all dependent on Russia for atomic fuel, for their nuclear reactors, on which they are reliant for electricity. The Greek Energy Minister is seeking EU support in the event of disruption in Russian gas supplies. Even before the sanctions, Germany’s trade with Russia was down 19 per cent in June. The Ukrainian Prime Minister, Yatsenyur complains that the rebels have purposely targeted vital infrastructure, so as to leave lasting damage and the economy now faces serious difficulties, even if the conflict is stopped immediately. So even if the Ukrainian crisis is resolved in the short term, there would appear to be serious fresh damage done to the EU’s direct economy, and to some of its trading partners. Also, account must also be taken of the economic impacts which may result from the conflicts in Gaza, Syria etc. The Eurozone has major

Local Counselling Group To Launch New Management System Fingal Counselling Service is excited to announce the launch of a new computerised client management system. The official launch date is 2nd September at 4pm at Brackenstown Resource Centre in Swords. They will now have a computerised client management system. This system will allow the group to save large amounts of information using less physical spare. “We believe that the introduction of this new system will greatly benefit our clients and our
supporters,” said Denise McDermott. “Information is a critical resource in the operation and management of Fingal Counselling Service.” One of the challenges we faced in recent times was to find a way to manage and record the growth in client contact and client data. We recognised that the use of computer technology would help the organisation better serve our clients by providing more timely and updated information,” she continued. Search Begins For Leading Local Engineers Engineers Ireland is calling for submissions from engineers and engineering organisations in the North County, to enter the fifth annual Excellence Awards. These awards recognise key projects, innovations and talent in Irish engineering today. Organisations, local authorities and engineers can enter online from now until 5th September. This year sees the introduction of a new category titled ‘Local Authority Engineering Initiative’ award. The professional body for engineering in Ireland is seeking entries from the local government on an engineering-led project which has been introduced in the past 24 months and contributes economically,
socially or both to the community in the North County. One of the most competitive awards in the competition is that of the Engineering Project of the Year. The highly contested award is intended to highlight the particular influence or benefit a specific engineering project has on society, in addition to recognising the exceptional engineering skills of local participants. Other categories open for submissions, include the Technological Innovation award, International Engineer of the Year award and the Engineering Education award. ical and scientific leaders and cancer survivorship experts to discuss improvements in cancer treatments, as well as tackling the physical and emotional consequences that a cancer diagnosis and treatment can bring. The aim of the week is to highlight the increasing rates of cancer survivorship and how more people are living well with, and beyond, cancer. Clinicians, scientists and cancer survivorship experts will explain how, despite rising cancer cases, advances in the early detection and treatment of cancer are changing the landscape for those with a cancer diagnosis. Over 60 per cent of people in Ireland survive for five years or longer after a cancer diagnosis and go on to live a normal and healthy life.
