Search For Rescue 116 Crewmen Resumed

Ciaran Smith

A Garda-led search for the two missing crewmen of the ill-fated Rescue 116 Coastguard helicopter, resumed last Monday off Blackrock Island in Co. Mayo. A Killybegs-based trawler, the MFV Westbound, will trawl the seabed for any sign of debris around the island. Oldtown man, Ciaran Smith’s body, along with that of his colleague, Paul Ormsby have not be yet been recovered, and there is renewed hope that, with calmer sea conditions, both men’s bodies will be recovered. The underwater search around Blackrock light-

house was postponed after bad weather the previous weekend. With favourable conditions, a spokesperson for the Coastguard Search and Rescue team confirmed that the Garda-led trawling search would go ahead the hope was that the mission, along with the shoreline search by volunteers, assisted by a Coastguard helicopter, would have a successful conclusion. The Coast Guard helicopter went down in March, with the bodies of Captain Dara Fitzpatrick and crewman Mark Duffy having been recovered. The hope is that the bodies of Ciaran and his colleague, Paul Ormsby will be found and returned to their families.

Whiskey Galore From Lambay! The development of new whiskeys is something that is in vogue at the moment and this trend is particularly prevalent among the hierarchy in this country, with lords across the nation putting their names to the popular tipple.

Fury Over Closed Rush Playground The situation regarding a playground in a Rush estate, which has been closed since last January, has caused local residents to demand that it is opened immediately, or taken down and restored to a green area. A number of residents of Sea Brook estate in Rush are up in arms about the fact that the playground, which has been built by the developer, has been left unopened and surrounded by security fencing since last January. The infuriating thing for the residents, is that nobody has told them why the playground has not been opened since it was built in January, or if it will ever be opened. At present, it is surrounded by security fencing, with signs telling people not to enter. The playground appears to be in a safe and completed state and its closure is a mystery to locals. The County Leader was initially contacted by residents, who are in favour of the playground, in an effort to try and shed some light on the situation, which has seen young children in this new estate with nowhere to play.

Resident, Eimear Spain, who is the mother of a young son, Luke said, “We’re not entirely sure why the playground is closed since last January. At the start, residents were concerned that the playground was not in line with the planning permission, but the County Council returned to us and confirmed that it was in accordance with planning permission. That was as far as we got and information has been hard to come by since. The Council came back recently to say that the estate hadn’t been handed over yet by the developer. We asked the developer, but they had no information for us, so it’s very frustrating for us, as we’re now in July and the children still have nowhere to play. It’s just such a waste,” she said. Another resident, Angela Keogh said, “At this stage we want it either opened or taken away. We’re now in the middle of July and there’s 50 children in the estate and we’d love either a green or a playground where they can play. The playground was part of the original plans for the estate.”

Resident Ciara Humphreys said, “The majority of people here have young children and this is a safety issue now. The children have nowhere to play and they’re trying to climb over the fencing to access the playground. There are cars driving around the estate, which pose a real danger for our children, so the Council or someone needs to make a decision and stop dragging their heels and open the playground, or turn it into a green area instead.” Jason Doyle, another resident said, “This is a hazardous situation with traffic in the estate and nowhere for the children to play. We had a close call with one child almost knocked down by a car, so we really need to have some action taken on this playground,” he said. In an effort to get to the bottom of this dilemma, the County Leader contacted the County Council. Their statement said, “Sea Brook estate is not yet taken in charge by the Council, so we wouldn’t have any responsibility in relation to the estate at this time,” the statement concluded.

Not to be outdone, North County Dublin is the latest region to get in on the act and none other than Lord Revelstoke, who lives in the castle on Lambay Island, is set to become the latest Anglo-Irish aristocrat to launch a whiskey venture, or at least the water on his island is. It is understood that Lord Revelstoke’s venture, backed by Camus Cognac, will launch later this month. The French cognac producer also entered into discussions with Lord Mountcharles before the Slane Castle owner struck a deal with Brown-Forman, the maker of global brands such as Jack Daniels, Southern Comfort and Finlandia vodka . The whiskey is expected to be produced in Cork, with water sourced from Lambay Island. The new business, entitled ‘Lambay Irish Whiskey Company’, was formed in February in partnership with Camus Cognac. The thought of transporting water from such a remote location across, at times, turbulent seas to be transported all the way to Cork, beggars belief. Is there something special in the waters of Lambay that would justify such devotion to duty.? While this seems like a good entrepreneurial move by Lord Revelstoke, otherwise known as Alexander Baring, a descendant of the founder of the famed Barings Bank.

The first question that locals will ask, relates to why Lambay water was selected for making the whiskey over any other water in the country, as already mentioned. Another question relates to where the water comes from - is it from a well, or a spring and how much water will be used, how will it be transported to Cork and if a licence or permission is required to remove water on such a scale from the island?. We contacted the County Council and asked if there were any restrictions in removing water from the island. A spokesperson replied, “If someone is abstracting groundwater they have to register this with the Council, if they are abstracting more than 25 cubic metres per day. We are required under the Water Pollution Act to keep a register of these abstractions. Also, it involves a simple registration process and standard procedures with the HSE to ensure that the water ( considered a ‘food stuff’ under the EU Hygiene of Foodstuff Regulations) does not become contaminated during transportation to Cork,” the statement concluded. Along with Lord Mountcharles, the Slazenger family, who own the Powerscourt Estate in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow have also gotten in on the act. They have joined the band wagon and unveiled plans for a €10m whiskey distillery and visitor centre on the grounds of their estate. Maybe we have unearthed a new whiskey to be consumed in the House of Lords. Who know, when you are sipping your wee dram in foreign climes, you may well be enjoying Lambay water in a much altered state. Cheers.!

Man Held Over Swords Murder The grim discovery of a man’s body on North Street, Swords in the early hours of last Sunday morning has shocked the entire community of Swords. A man has been arrested in relation to the death of 54-year-old father-of-three, named locally as Dermot Byrne from Milesian estate in Swords. He was viciously beaten and dumped on a street, where he was found by a passer-by. The victim’s body was found on the steps at Fingal Community College, on North Street shortly after 3am. It is believed that Mr Byrne suffered multiple blunt force injuries to his head and body, which were consistent with a prolonged and sustained beating. It is believed that the attack may have happened elsewhere and that Mr Byrne was later dumped on the street. His injuries were so bad it is suspected that whoever carried out the attack may have believed he was dead when they dumped him.

The steps of Fingal Community College where locals have been laying tributes to the late Dermot Byrne.

A 29-year-old man was arrested in connection with the garda investigation. He was being detained at Swords garda station. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses. Local councillors, Joe Newman and Duncan Smith were horrified by the tragic incident, when they spoke to the County Leader. Newman said, “This is an unspeakable tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with the man’s family. Swords is normally a very safe

place to enjoy yourself and the entire community are shocked by this,” he said. Smith said, “There was an air of disbelief and Cllr. Newman sadness in Swords after the news broke. Nobody could believe that such a thing like this could happen in Swords. All our thoughts and prayers are with the man’s family,” he said. Cllr Darragh Butler said, Like many other Swords residents, I was shocked by what happened. My Cllr. Butler thoughts go out to the deceased man and especially his family and friends at this very difficult time. Everyone should be able to go out and enjoy themselves on a night out and get back home safely to their family afterwards.”

It seems that Greece is now well on the way to restoring its economy. Following financial improvements and reduction in the economy, the European Commission will recommend to the European Council to end the disciplinary procedures. A spokesperson said, “Our recommendation to close the Excessive Deficit Procedure for Greece is another positive signal of financial stability and economic recovery in the country.” So now it’s down to just three Member States who will remain under the Stability and Growth Pact, France, Spain and the UK. It seems that a solid working agreement between the French and German governments is well under construction. Macron on election put forward a new vision which proposed a Eurozone Budget with its own Finance Minister. That proposal was initially met with a stiff rebuke from some elements within Germany. This proposal is not dissimilar to one made some years ago by Merkel. Macron said, “France must reform its economy to give it more vigour, but Germany must support a revival of public and private investment in Europe.” France is also taking a proactive position in respect of migration. They are proposing to increase the number of accommodation places while reducing

Spain has raised the governance of Gibraltar as one which should be addressed during the Brexit negotiations. The King, in his address to both houses of Parliament, suggested that arrangements could be reached between the two countries on the issue. The UK says sovereignty is not up for discussion. The UK Government published the Repeal Bill designed to transpose EU into UK law as might be appropriate after the UK’s exit. But both Nicola Sturgeon and Carwyn Jones, first ministers of Scotland and Wales respectively are not happy with the proposal. The Labour Party also say they may vote against it. It seems that the Government will have a very hard time for whatever length of time they have in Parliament.

Taoiseach Launches Creative Ireland Fingal Programme

FREE Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is pictured with local county councillors and public representatives at Swords Castle

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, a former Fingal County councillor, launched the Creative Ireland Fingal Programme last week. Hosted in Swords Castle, the event celebrated the new major culture and creativity initiative designed to promote individual, community and national well-being. Mr. Varadkar, on his first official visit to Swords since his election as Taoiseach, said: “I am delighted to be here this evening to launch the Creative Ireland – Fingal Culture and Creativity Plan 2017. By connecting experiences and creating new things with this Creative Ireland Programme, you, the people of Fingal are channelling the power of creativity to the service of our communities and our society.” “I would like to congratulate the Fingal Culture Team on this Plan. They have put together a broad and interesting programme which both draws on, and reflects, the great creative and cultural fabric in the Fingal area and I know it will be very successful here over the coming months,” he said. County Mayor, Cllr. Mary McCamley commented: “Inspired by the success of last year’s 1916 centenary

celebrations, I hope that our citizens will embrace this new Creative Ireland Programme in the same way. We hope to harness creativity, which we know thrives within our communities, using it to make Fingal an even better place to live, work, visit and do business in.” Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said: “Our greatest resource is our people. With the third biggest, fastest growing and youngest population in Ireland, our county is also vibrant with diversity. The Council supports cultural development and has exciting plans for a new Civic and Cultural Centre in Swords. This will be a centre of excellence for the arts and creativity in the Swords areas and environs.” The Creative Culture Fund is an exciting opportunity open to artists from all disciplines. Centred on identity, culture and citizenship, the Creative Ireland Programme is dedicated to providing meaningful support to artists. Grant applications of up to €1,500 are being invited under the Creative Culture Fund scheme. Applications are open until December 2017 and will provide support to local groups to creatively engage and encourage community participation.

Des had a difficult time with cancer in 2014/2015 and has written this book in order to raise funds and awareness for the Irish Cancer Society. In the book Des writes of his childhood and how much fun it was, his funny stories are inspiring as he writes about the cycles he took around the North County. He writes about his lunch experience in Swords Pavilion, covers his trip around France and Spain with his dog Roger, and his partner Karen. The book is full of wonderful chapters that will make you laugh and cry. Such a lovely read and an inspirational act of kindness after everything he went through.

“The online price checker is so handy. I got a price on my prescription in minutes and couldn't believe the difference in the price. I dropped into the Pure Pharmacy on Collins Avenue and the girls were so helpful. Delighted I heard about these Guys”

“I never knew that the price of prescription medication varied from one pharmacy to another. I have been paying €144.00 per month for my prescription for years. I rang Pure Pharmacy and couldn't believe the price I was given over the phone so I called into one of their stores to check it again - it was right! my €144.00 prescription is now costing me €84.20 a month. Saving me €741.60 a year. My only regret is that I didn't change sooner”

By Leslie Murphy John Treacy launched the book at Malahide Tennis Club recently and got sales off to a great start. Des dedicates the book to his partner Karen Nugent and says it’s her love and support made his book possible. In the opening foreword of the book Des says, “ I’m reluctant to call it my book as that sounds a bit pretentious. For the most part, it’s a collection of memories, some of the uplifting things that happened to me when I was being treated for a difficult cancer over a sixteen month period. In time, I recovered well enough to go back to work and I drove across Spain and France to celebrate the end of a twenty year career as CEO of Tennis Ireland. I regard that trip as a type of detox of the clutter of my working

“My prescription always cost me €130 per month. Now that I have changed to Pure Pharmacy I am paying €80.00 for the same prescription. I am delighted to be saving €50.00 every month of the year!”

Otherwise I hope you enjoy my Wanderings and Ponderings.” There are so many beautifully written essays by Des Allen, who chronicles his battle with cancer, parsed through events in his life, from the tears of diagnosis and the grim battle to try to overcome a physically devastating illness, to his recovery and the clarity it introduced into his life. There is even a Rolling Stones story in there. While there may have been some catharsis in collating his thoughts into a collection of essays, a more practical remit is to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society. The result is an absolute gem of a book, both in the writing and content. Wandering and Ponderings by Des Allen is on sale in Malahide Tennis Club and is priced at €20. The entire proceeds go to the Irish Cancer Society.

Balbriggan Beach Overgrown Again The yearly battle in Balbriggan, over whether the County Council By Rachel Wallace or Irish Rail are to be held responsible for the verge trimming at the town’s main beach at Front Strand, has commenced and locals are appealing for a resolution. Local Cllr Tony Murphy is calling on the Council to sort the issue once and for all. The confusion is as a result of joint responsibility between Irish Rail, who are in charge of the upper embankment alongside the railway line, and the County Council, who are responsible for the maintenance of the lower embankment. Cllr Murphy told the County Leader, “When I got elected for the first time in May 2014, many people expressed their frustration over Balbriggan beach front and the need to have the grass cut more regularly. I would have thought this was a simple wish to fulfil. To my frustration and disappointment, I have discovered, that there is no resolve in the Council to deliver a structured maintenance programme for the beach on an annual basis.” “Balbriggan Front Strand is a lovely beach used by many people and which should be one of our best tourism Cllr. Murphy attractions. If the Council do not have the workforce to support the grass cutting on the embankments, there are contractors who are capable of delivering a service to maintain the beach area to a standard worthy of the people of Balbriggan.” “I am calling on the County Council to initiate and deliver a programme of works that includes the cutting of the grass on both embankments on a regular basis, along with the consideration to redesign the beach area through a public consultation process to make Balbriggan Beach a place the town and the North County can be truly proud of,” he concluded. The County Council told the County Leader that, “For the last number of years there has been a shared arrangement in place between the County Council and Irish Rail with regard to grass cutting on the railway embankment. As this agreement was not resulting in the satisfactory maintenance of the area, the Council have decided to take over maintenance commencing with a first cut at the end of next week. We have scheduled to carry out six to eight cuts annually. It is a particularly difficult area to work in as there is no vehicular access and all maintenance works must be carried out with hand strimmers. We will review this arrangement at the end of this current growing season and evaluate if the proposal will work going forward to 2018,” they concluded.

Paul Mulville and Dublin trade union and political activist Paul Dillon. Chairman of Swords Boxing Club Thomas Clarke, told the County Leader,, “ There are people calling to homes in the Swords and it’s not the first time this has happened. The club is running for years in the community and has a well established team of boxers. We just want to highlight this and bring it to the attention of residents in Swords who may have had people call to their door. It’s always good to ask people for identification when they call just to make sure that they are actually calling from the organisation they say they are from.”

Following on from last year’s amazingly successful event, Swords Summer Festival will return again this year. Expect more of the same Family Fun entertainment and a whole raft of brilliant live music to keep you and the whole family entertained. Returning for its third year to Swords, this eagerly awaited festival is one that has captured the imagination of all.

Roisin Murphy, Greg Tillman and Aisling Dolan enjoy last year’s festival

This year the festival will take place over four days; 20th - 23rd July inclusive and will include the Fingal 10K Road Race the biggest 10K run in the country. Many people, particularly visitors will be very impressed to see the excellent progress that is happening at Swords Castle and its environs.

The inaugural Swords festival took place in 2015, which created a carnival atmosphere in Swords Main Street. Last year’s event was even bigger and better and for this year’s festival, the Events team at Fingal County Council have come up trumps again, with an exciting and imaginative schedule of family fun activities which is guaranteed to keep everyone happy. This year’s festival kicks off on Thursday 20th July with a performance of ‘The Promise’ a musical drama at Swords Castle Marquee from 6.00pm. The Promise is a tale of intertwined love stories, mixed with betrayal, revenge and reconciliation, set in early 19th century Ballyboughal and takes some of its inspiration from the final battle on the east coast of Ireland of the United Irishmen at Drishoge, Ballyboughal in 1798. Written by Paul Redmond, The Promise features a cast of 10 actors/singers accompanied by a six-piece band and is supported by a 20 strong choir. It is directed by multi-award winning director Noel McDonagh. This is a ticketed event. Earlier in the day there will be a Family Festival f Fun at Swords Town Park from 11.00am until 6.00pm. This fun day will also take place on Friday, 21st at the same time and location. On Friday 21st there will be the return of the Swords Lions Club fundraiser, this year featuring the Rat Pack live in the marquee in Swords Castle at 8pm. This is also a ticketed event and tickets are €25. The Marquee has seating
