However, the real hero of the success of Balbriggan’s vote strategy was Tony Murphy (NP), who managed to secure transfers from practically every eliminated candidate in the field of 23. This represents a remarkable performance by him, and augers well for a powerful and cohesive representation at County Hall. It soon became obvious that the Balbriggan voters were in the mood for change and vented their fury at the Government parties, Fine Gael and Labour. More Forgiving Towards Government The voting pattern of people in the Howth/Malahide electoral area, was similar to that in both Swords and Balbriggan. From the moment the first boxes were opened on Saturday morning in Citywest, and the tally men started their calculations, an air of expectancy and tension filled the hall. It became obvious from very early on, that a major swing was on the cards. Howth/Malahide counting of votes was completed in the early hours of Sunday morning, but not without the electorate having a definite say in how their ward would be managed. The voting in Howth/Malahide reflected the national trend, that saw the emergence of Independents, smaller parties and Sinn Fein. Sinn Fein candidate Daire Ní Laoi polled extremely well, and it was obvious that changes were on the way. Continued on page 10

Selfless Act By Portmarnock Girl An extraordinary act of kindness by a young local girl, is set to change the lives of children less fortunate

than herself. Ten year old Roisin Timmins from Portmarnock, has decided to have her beautiful hair cut for the first time ever, so that it can be donated to the Rapunzel Foundation to make wigs for children who cannot grow their own hair. Roisin’s mother, Clare

spoke to the County Leader, about her pride in Roisin’s efforts to enhance the lives of others. She said, “Roisin made friends with Caitlin at a Mama Mia camp in Wexford last summer. Caitlin is the face of the Rapunzel Foundation, and she lost all her hair as a baby and it never grew back. The foundation sponsors freedom wigs made of natural hair, so kids can go dancing and swimming etc. The charity was set up in the last couple of years, because the Freedom Wigs are so expensive,” explained Clare. “Roisin has decided to donate her ponytail towards a wig for the charity. It takes 20/25 ponytails to make one

wig and they need children’s hair for children’s wigs. The ponytail has to be a minimum of 14 inches long . Roisin’s hair is lovely and long as she has only ever had it trimmed since she was a baby. I approached the hair salon, The Spot in Portmarnock, and they suggested we also do some fundraising.” Roisin gave a talk at assembly in her school to all the pupils and staff of St Helens SNS. They had a non uniform day, which was great fun and they also held a raffle for the teachers to make a contribution. Roisin’s Brownie troupe also held a raffle, at their sleep over to support her great efforts.

New Sign Welcomed Tidy Towns A new sign welcoming people to Swords, will soon be in evidence at the Pinnock Hill Roundabout entrance to the town. This has been made possible, as a result of a cheque for €750, which was presented to Swords Tidy Towns committee, by the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA). This will enable the sign to be completed in the next few weeks. This has been the culmination of a process that was put in train two years ago, by the late Chairperson of Swords Tidy Towns, Des Becton. Current chairperson, Ken Duffy spoke to the County Leader about the significance of the gesture by DAA. He said: “We are delighted to complete the work that Des started two years ago, and we thank Maura Cassidy of DAA for helping to make this possible. One of our members has been involved in helping to design the welcoming sign, and we are in negotiation with other bodies to sponsor the same signs at other major entrances to the town,” he said. Maura Cassidy, Dublin Airport’s Community Affairs Manager said, “DAA is delighted to support the excellent work being done by the Swords Tidy Towns group. The community spirit of this group’s work is very close to DAA’s belief in the value of working with local residents and we are only too happy to sponsor a new “Welcome to Swords” sign.

With summer here at last after a dreary winter and a wet spring, people are now suffering from cabin fever in their attempts to get into the garden and do some much needed tidying up. Winter time can be very harsh on gardens, but now, with the summer finally here, now is your opportunity to extend some tender loving care and get your garden looking great again. Nothing says summer

is here like your garden. It’s time to dig out those spades and shovels and really make your garden shine with some new plants and flowers. For those who like DIY, but without as much hassle, it’s best to go and buy your potted plants in your favourite summer colours and plant them as they are. A visit to your local garden centre will ensure that you can avail of the necessary flowers, shrubs and trees to give your garden that wow factor. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colours and garden design. Your local garden centre will be only too pleased to provide you with the necessary advice, as well as the plants needed for this purpose. You will find all the supplies, materials, fertilisers and machinery you need to do a great job in your local garden store, so you won’t have to go miles to spruce up the garden. Even just cleaning up all the weeds and old plants will really make a difference. When planning a Clean up, it is important to plan ahead. Make sure you have the proper tools to carry out the job. A wheelbarrow is also essential to ensure that you remove garden rubbish to a central location. When all is finished, you may need a skip to have all the rubbish removed. Luckily, there are many fine skip hire companies here in the North County where you can get a great bargain. A neatly kept garden is the first impression a visitor gets of your house. This first impression is lasting and if your garden is not kept up to scratch,

€450*

it’s unlikely that your home will be any better. Now is the perfect time to start tidying up your garden. If you need a major clean-up after the harsh winter and spring that we have just endured, you will need to engage the services of a professional landscaper. Luckily, there are many such companies here in the North County, who will provide you with a top class service to make sure your garden, the entrance to your home, looks at it’s best. With smaller gardens, you may be in a position to undertake small jobs yourself. Sowing a new lawn can be undertaken, with local garden centres ready to provide you with all your requirements and to give excellent advice. Larger jobs, like paving and decking will give your house an added dimension and can provide that all-important outside room,

which can be enjoyed as the long summer evenings are finally here. Local landscaping companies specialise in garden design, as well as paving, decking, water features, stone

cladding, trellis work and even rainwater harvesting. This can ensure that your garden is being used in an eco friendly way, thus ensuring that the environment is protected. Landscaping can make such a difference to your garden. Wildlife will flourish in a well maintained garden and many people like to cultivate a wild garden, which attracts butterflies and bird life, which can be enjoyed by the entire family. What is nicer than to have strategically positioned hanging baskets, which will give colour all summer long, on the walls of your house, or garage. These will provide a real focal point for your garden, not to speak of colour and aroma.

Paving The Way Nothing at all can beat the versatility of stone for style, finesse, character and colour. To create the stunning, the sophisticated, the elaborate or to transform the house to domestic temple, paving is the ultimate investment. Paving can be used to create a stunning driveway, an exciting and ornate centrepiece or a decorative surround to a tree. Even a patio with magnificent light fixtures which can be perfect for an evening’s BBQ with friends and neighbours. Cobbles are great fun, either as a

tive to grass is of course, utilising stone, which can be seen as paving slabs of varying shades, colours and textures or gravel which fall into a similar description. When done well, this option can be very effective and can be of very low maintenance once in place. You don’t have

to worry about crop circles from ornaments and a simple hosing and/or scrubbing with a yard brush is all that is needed to keep them clean. Paving slabs can be tricky to get right; a well prepared and level surface, not to mention the right mix of cement and grout is essential to stop cracking and popping up of slabs. This tends to be a task for the experts, as certainly for the older generation, lifting and laying heavy slabs would be a difficult task indeed. There are so many landscape gardeners here in the North County who can leave your garden just the way you have always dreamed of. Whatever this year holds for us weather wise, have your garden looking good and remember, it’s your own private place to enjoy with friends and family.

Local Elections 2014 Balbriggan Town The Real Winner Continued from page 1 However, long serving Labour councillor for Balbriggan ward, Ken Farrell bucked this trend, as he romped home on the first count, well exceeding the quota. Fine Gael’s long serving councillor, Tom O’Leary was eliminated early on, after polling very poorly and was replaced as a Balbriggan ward councillor, by his running mate, JP Browne. The Fine Gael strategy of placing Browne as a running mate for O’Leary was a

mystery to many at the time, including O’Leary himself, and it turned out to be the undoing of the sitting councillor. The other elected members include, Fianna Fail’s Brian Dennehy from Rush and David O’Connor (NP), who polled very strongly in the rural part of the ward, making up a very powerful team of councillors, who will represent their area with pride and passion in the next five years, in a Council chamber that will not be found lacking in colour or imagination.

Election Drama As Swords Still Counting Continued from page 1 A recount of the four lowest remaining Swords candidates, Henchy (FF), Dowling (FG), Hennessy (FF) and Collins took place on Sunday morning, which proved to be inconclusive, with Collins now five points behind Hennessy. This led to Collins and his team calling for a full recount of Swords, which took place at Sluagh Hall, beside Fingallians GAA Club on Monday. In fact, Darragh Butler (FF) also had reason to bemoan the lack of just one vote, but for completely different reasons. He polled 1406 first preferences, just one vote shy of the quota of 1407, which would have seen him elected on the first count. The first count on Monday showed that Butler had indeed improved his first preferences by eight votes, and he was deemed elected

on the first count, as was Sinn Fein surprise packet, Philip Lynam, who topped the poll with 1552 first preferences, exceeding the revised quota of 1406 (down one), by 146 votes, which, as we went to press, were being distributed. The first count on Monday revealed that Collins’ first preference vote was down by seven, and speculation was that these, in all likelihood, were the votes that Darragh Butler was up by. This shows how a long, protracted count can lead to discrepancies like those, that necessitated the recount in the first place. The situation with the remaining four lowest candidates, shows Dowling down two to 588, Henchy down 4 to 781, with Hennessy the same at 763. Speculation was rife at Sluagh Hall that the final result may not be known for quite some time yet, as the possibility of

further recounts looms large. These are only first preference votes, much further back that the stage that caused the recount. The trend, like elsewhere, showed the same heave against Labour, with veteran councillors, Gerry McGuire and Tom Kelleher, set to lose their seats. McGuire, in many people’s opinion was a victim of the presence of so many candidates from the Donabate area of the ward, and many regard him as being unlucky. Like in Malahide, Labour’s younger candidate, Duncan Smith escaped the harshest treatment, as he survived the first count. Independents, Joe Newman Justin Sinnott, Paul Mulville and Anne Devitt showed strongly, with Newman the most likely to take a seat, at the time of going to press. Whatever the outcome of this intriguing election, It all adds up to an eclectic mix of councillors, that is set to ensure some very lively and vigourous debate at Council level over the next five years.

Malahide More Forgiving Towards Government Continued from page 1 This move towards the party, which was mirrored in both Swords and Balbriggan, took many by surprise. Whist there was a shift against the Government parties, it was not felt as much here, with Fine Gael returning two candidates, sitting councillor Anthony Lavin and Keith Redmond, in the area of local TD, Alan Farrell, who will welcome this development. An excellent performance by David Healy secured a seat for the Green Party, and the return of the party to local politics will be welcomed by many. It will also go some way to compensating them for their failure to pick up seats in Swords and Balbriggan. Labour councillor, Judy Dunne, who was co-opted on to the Council as a replacement for Peter Coyle, was not so lucky, and was seen as a scapegoat for her party’s poor performance at national level, and she was swept aside. Her Labour Party colleague, Brian McDonagh fared better, and was given the benefit of the electorate this time round. Cian O’Callaghan, a former Labour Mayor, topped the pole and was elected on the first count. Many will maintain he was wise to detach himself from the party and shed his Labour Party allegiance last year. Eoghan O’Brien from Fianna Fail also polled very strongly and was elected with a strong surplus. It was not, however, sufficient to drag his running mate, Aileen Woods over the line. Her failure to secure a seat in such a small ward (only 13 candidates for eight seats) will be viewed as a major disappointment by Fianna Fail chiefs. The success of Independents was continued by the election of Jimmy Guerin, who finally managed to secure a seat, having narrowly missed out five years ago.

Balbriggan is one of the surprise packages of the North County and has made tremendous progress in the past few years in all facets in the town. It has now become a real shopping destination for many people, not only in the town, but further afield. It can boast a very vibrant community, with no shortage of imaginative input, which has been used to great effect

in improving the town centre. An example of this has been the recent, highly successful Public Realm Plan, which included the wishes and aspirations of the residents. This has resulted in shop fronts with lovely colours and floral displays, which has led to some friendly competition between retailers. The result of which is that the town now has a very inviting look and

It also opens up the town to visitors from outside the North County area. Secondly, it has freed up the town from the scourge of heavy lorries rumbling through the streets, choking the place with toxic fumes, that have no part to play in the local economy. Previous to this, shoppers made the long haul to Dublin city

Right from the moment you approach Balbriggan from the Dublin side, the first thing you see is the impressive roundabout, which leads on to Dublin Street. New signage is another aspect of the town, where visitors can clearly identify their location in the town. From here as far as the impressive St George’s Square, there is an array of fine shops, where shoppers can have a great choice of the finest produce. St George’s Square itself is very reminiscent of a continental town square, and it is a natural place for residents and visitors alike to sit and enjoy the fine architecture and watch the traffic pass by. This area houses the public library. As you proceed up the town, it becomes very evident that Balbriggan is a town brimming with life and very clearly open for business. There is always a businesslike atmosphere, where retailers display their wares in lovely, well kept, attractive shops which draw you in. A great range of retail shops has emerged in recent years, including ladies and men’s fashions, carpet shops, bridal wear, beauticians, designer jewellery, pharmacy gift shops, exotic food stores, and many more, complimented by an excellent mix of restaurants, cafes, bars and high end hotel accommodation with family entertainment. It is quite clear that, with the great efforts of the community, Balbriggan is now a destination of choice for many people looking for that elusive bargain. You are much more likely to find it here than in times past. The Tourist Office on Quay Street gives a clear indication that the town is prepared to attract as many visitors as possible. At long last, tourists will have somewhere to find vital information about the wonderful local amenities of the town and it’s hinterland. This much needed facility is certain to be a great addition to the town, and the hope is that festivals can be regularly held here in the near future.

As Balbriggan is a seaside town, angling and other marine pursuits can now be fully exploited through information available at the Tourist Office. Balbriggan can also boast an excellent rail service to the town. The train station is located at Railway Street, where there has been a wonderful effort to revamp this area. It is an ideal means of transport for people from nearby towns like Rush, Lusk and Donabate, who may want to visit by train and leave the car at home. The first impression a rail visitor gets of the town is a positive one. The recently opened Fumbally Exchange here has invigorated this street and has brought an increased footfall to the area. When you’re not enjoying retail therapy in the town, Balbriggan has much more to offer it’s visitors. As it’s a seaside town, a short walk on a fine summer’s day will bring you to the quaint harbour, with it’s lovely lighthouse. Adjacent to the harbour is a fine sandy beach, with safe bathing for chil-

dren and the entire family. After you’ve enjoyed your lunch in one of the many fine restaurants or pubs in the town, nearby Ardgillan Demesne is a must visit location. It is situated a few miles from the town and it affords magnificent views over the Mourne mountains and the Irish Sea and is an ideal place for that family picnic, or that healthy walk. There’s a freshness about Balbriggan and it’s obvious that you are in a town that is serious about looking after it’s residents and much valued customers. Great bargains are to be had on every street in the town. There’s also a feeling here that Balbriggan is a very friendly place to shop, where there is time for the customer, not the fast buck and where the butcher will know you by name and the advise from the hardware counter will go way beyond just DIY. These are old fashioned values and they ensure that visitors will return time and again to get that extra special service that only Balbriggan can offer.

Local Walk To School Week A Great Success Students from St Brendan’s National School in Loughshinny, and St Patrick’s Senior National School in Skerries were among the thousands of students across the North County and beyond last week who put plans in motion to take part in An Taisce Green-Schools’ National Walk to School Week, 2014, which took place from May 12th to 16th. St Brendan’s decided to celebrate the week in their own unique way by holding a ‘Trot on Thursday’ Day, followed by guided walks to the local Loughshinny Beach and a beach scavenger hunt facilitated by An Taisce GreenSchools. St Patrick’s in Skerries held a Funky Feet Friday Day, with children blinging up their shoes and walking en mass to school. Some classes later took part in a walk to their local Skerries beach and had a beach bio-diversity hunt where they learned about local flora and fauna. The ultimate aim of National Walk to School week was to increase the number of students who make the school journey on foot during the week. National Walk to School Week is a country-wide initiative, which resulted in thousands of pupils, their parents and teachers walking to and from school, to celebrate the environmental, health, social and financial benefits of active travel on the school journey. The week was also an opportunity for schools to try other modes of travel including: cycling, scooting, Park ‘n’ Stride, carpooling and travelling by bus.
