Trip Of A Lifetime! A group of 11 young people from the Foróige Youth Service in Balbriggan, dubbed Super Heroes, are undertaking the trip of a lifetime, when they will walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain this week. The group is made up of six girls and five boys between the age of 14 and 16 and they will be accompanied on the trip by six adult volunteers.
By Patrick Finnegan The Camino super heroes group encapsulates the diversity of young people’s participation in the service representing Balbriggan Youth Service Advisory committee, CUIS drug and alcohol project, Alternative Learning programme and North Fingal’s Diversionary programme. The group won a competition after creating a five minute video explaining why they should be chosen to undertake this once in a lifetime trip. One of the stipulations was that the group should be a diversified one, and as the group is made up of people from Foróige clubs, North Fingal Drug and Alcohol Programme and the Alternative Learning Programme (ALP), they were deemed to have fitted the bill to a tee. The group will leave on Tuesday, 11th April, returning a week later on 18th April. Andy Neary, Manager of Balbriggan Youth Service spoke to the County Leader prior to the group’s departure for Spain. “This is a fantastic opportunity to empower young people from Balbriggan community, to learn about themselves and each other more deeply, be a stronger group through their shared experience and enable young people and adults to work together in their community.” Following all the fundraising, teambuilding and training days it’s amazing to witness young people’s development. He continued, “Young people have formed friendships that may not have happened if it wasn’t for this
once in a lifetime opportunity presented by our private sponsor”. The excitement is palpable and everyone cannot wait to experience walking the camino,” he said. “The young people took to the task of fundraising for the trip with great gusto and dropped sponsorship letters into local businesses in Balbriggan. The generosity has been terrific and I want to thank those businesses and particularly our main sponsor Progressive Credit Union for their help and support,” he said. The journey will bring the group to Bilbao and the walking will commence in Pamplona. The destination will be Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Andy had nothing but praise for the tireless volunteers, who will accompany the youngsters and he believes that this trip will have a very positive impact on the development of
Malahide Sea Scouts held their annual Launching Day at the slipway beside their Scout Den for the coming Year. The Launch Day is a celebration of all the unseen hard work that goes on over the winter months to make the boats ready for the new boating year. Sanding, scraping, painting and varnishing were all the order of the day behind the closed doors over the winter weekends. But the effort all seems worthwhile in the spring sunshine, as the boats emerge for another season of fun afloat. Pride of the fleet are the group’s three East Coast Skiffs and are the boats that take the most time and energy to maintain, as they are Clinker built wooden boats, unique to the east coast of Ireland. These boats will form the back bone of the group’s seamanship programme and will come to the fore later in the season, as they are raced against other Sea Scout
these young people. The core value of Foróige is based on Friendship and this will go a long way to copper fasten this,” said Andy. A lot of hard work was put in by all of the youngsters and the County Leader spoke to one of them, who outlined
what had to be done to get funding for the trip. Cian Walsh (15) said, “We had to approach businesses in the town and give them sponsorship letters. The
troops in the National Sea Scout Regatta. Also to the fore were the group’s fleet of Laser Pico Sailing Dinghys. These are the scouts favourites, as they give such a degree of independence to young sailors and help them to hone all their skills of pitting themselves against the elements of wind and sea in a light, but speedy craft. The whole day was overseen and monitored by the group’s team of instructors from the four safety powered boats and from the new vantage point on the balcony of the newly refurbished Scout Den. The Blessing of the Boats was carried out this year by Fr. Conleth Meehan, whilst another leader, Bill Abbott kept all those present well sustained with a constant flow of burgers from the BBQ in the Scout Den.Pictured at the Launch Day at Malahide Sea Scouts are Kate Robinson, Orna Reid, Leah McGee and Helen Howard .

response was terrific and I’m very excited about the trip and maybe a little nervous as well. This is my first time to travel by plane and the first time to leave Ireland,” said Cian. “The whole project has made me want to do more and I’m now looking forward to getting more OUR GROUP WILL START FROM HERE involved and I hope to go again next year if I can. Getting my passport was a bit of a challenge for me, but I overcame it. Foróige gives me the chance to meet people from other areas of Balbriggan that I would not have met
otherwise,” said Cian. His mother, Anita, who was a sterling worker in fundraising for the trip said that she was very proud of Cian and that Foróige is an exceptional organisation for young children in the area, providing fantastic opportunities for youngsters like Cian,” she said.

Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín is in the process of celebrating their 10th year providing top class education through the medium of Irish for the children of Balbriggan. The school, which is situated in the Castlelands area of the town, first opened its doors on the 4th September 2006 in Sunshine House, with two teachers and 35 students. This wonderful achievement came about as the result of two years of hard work and dedication of the Founding Committee. They worked tirelessly to raise awareness, enrol potential students, raise funds and achieve recognition from the Department of Education and Skills. It was a historical day for the town of Balbriggan and the school has grown and flourished over the last 10 years to a school with 485 students, 26 teachers, 7 SNAs and ancillary staff. There are 16 mainstream classes and 2 ASD classes. The school and ASD classes are educated through the medium of Irish. They also engage in many extra curricular and cultural activities such as

The school also now benefits from access to a Gaelcholáiste (Coláiste Ghlór Na Mara) in the town. A wonderful day was had in the school on 6th April last to celebrate the success and growth of the school, with musicians, dancers and a concert with Seo Linn. Acting County Mayor, Cllr Gráinne Maguire was present on the day and much praise was heaped on Chairman of the Board of Directors, Micheál Mac Mathúna, whose dedication 10 years ago made sure that the school proceeded. Principal, Clodagh Ní Mhaoilchiaráin was also praised for her vision and hard work. Heartfelt Appeal By Ciaran’s Family
Pictured are Skerries couple, Kieran and Olive Bowers, as they celebrated 50 years of marriage recently
The agony continues for the family of Oldtown hero, Ciaran Smith, who have maintained a constant vigil at Blacksod in Co Mayo, as they await news about the ongoing search for Ciaran and his colleague, Paul Ormsby. The news that the missing crewmen of Rescue 116 were still missing after the lifting of the stricken helicopter, came as a major blow to the families. A major sea search Ciaran Smith continues and the news prompted Ciaran’s sister Orla Smith to issue a heartfelt plea to local fishermen to continue the search, particularly from Achill Island, as far as Aran Mór Island in Co. Cycle Against Suicide
Swords Students Quit Social Media For Charity Transition year students from St. Finian’s Community College, Swords decided to embark on a sponsored social media silence, where they went for twelve hours without their phones last week all in aid of the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC). The students told the County Leader “We feel the idea of a sponsored social media silence is quite innovative, in order to raise needed funds and awareness for such a worthy cause as the ISPCC. The idea of the silence promotes the issue of cyberbullying and the feeling of isolation felt by those who are being bullied. The ISPCC received 444,000 calls last year alone to Childline and many thousands of calls from clubs, schools and societies. These people being bullied rely on this service for someone to share their feelings with. We hope to raise €500 for the ISPCC a worthy cause indeed”.

This was the first day of activity for the new group, who are continuing to reach out to find new members in Swords and the surrounding area who are interested in fishing. Local councillor, Duncan Smith (Lab), who is Chair of the group told the County Leader, “We are just at the start of this very exciting project to get Usher’s Lake up and running as a
proper community-based fishery. We all share a love of the lake and its woodland environment and it was great to get the waders on and get a proper clean up under way. In the weeks and months ahead, we will be working to improve the water quality of the lake and to improve access for fishing. We are looking to work with the Council and the local community to deliver this unique amenity. All new volunteers and members are welcome,” said Smith.

Cllr Malachy Quinn (SF) has welcomed the news that public WIFI is a step closer for the rural North County. This follows confirmation from his party colleague Liadh Ní Riada MEP, that her report on WIFI4EU has been adopted by a committee vote last week in Strasbourg. The public WiFi proposals will now move to the Plenary stage where they are expected to be passed, paving the way for the creation of WiFi hubs in towns and villages across North County Dublin. Ms Ní Riada, who is the lead negotiator on the WiFi4EU project, said the initiative would “help bring connectivity and investment to rural areas”. Quinn said, “This is an important project for North County Dublin and I now urge all communities without this type of infrastructure to keep an eye on the scheme and avail of it when it is rolled out.” “It is a very simple but effective idea. It requires a relatively small investment of some €120m Europewide that, if used wisely, will have huge returns for the communities it bene-

Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG), recently raised the enrolment issues at primary level schools in Swords directly with the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton in the Dáil. Farrell said: “I understand that in January the Department provided the local authority with a comprehensive report on the availability of space for the coming year. Regrettably, it has been found that once enrolment was complete in those schools, there were excessive applications in the hundreds throughout the community of Swords.” “The reality of the situation is that it does not appear the Department has adequately catered for educational demand in Swords. “The provision of new classrooms and educational infrastructure in Swords must be prioritised in order to ensure this issue does not reoccur in the coming years. I will continue to engage with the Minister and his Department on this matter in search of a solution for all families, and a school place this September for children affected,” concluded Farrell.

shadow of her former happy self. Feeling depressed, she desperately needed to make a change. Through fad diets she would lose a few pounds. Then a Slimming World leaflet came through the door. Jennifer said, “It was the first time I attended a Slimming World group. The consultant was so welcoming and so were the members in the group. I didn’t know it then but that’s the day my life changed for the better. Jennifer was blown away that first night when she heard about all the amazing unlimited free foods she could enjoy and still lose weight, meals like Chicken Curry, Taco mince, Fish and Chips, Lasagne and tasty brownies. At the beginning, the weight came off very quickly and Jennifer lost one stone in just four weeks ; there were some weeks where it got a little tougher. To date Jennifer has lost over three stone and dropped 3 dress sizes. Reaching a size 12 was a massive event in Jennifer’s life as it coincided with being a bridesmaid at her best friend’s wedding. Jennifer is now starting a whole new career with Slimming World and is relaunching the Swords group in B.A.S.E, Brackenstown Road on Tuesday 18th April 5.30pm & 7.30pm. Credit Union loans – get the facts not the fiction. Credit Unions have been in operation in Ireland for over 50 years and as such some stereotypes exist around how Credit Union loans work. Below I will answer some of the misconceptions as they relate to Member First By Darren O’Reilly Credit Union. YOU HAVE TO SAVE FOR 13 WEEKS BEFORE GETTING YOUR FIRST LOAN! This is an old Credit Union rule that is not applicable to us at Member First Credit Union. Nowadays, you can join the credit union and apply for a loan on the same day. Our loan approval time is 24 hours (subject to T&Cs).
YOU CAN ONLY BORROW MONEY IN THE CREDIT UNION BASED ON YOUR SAVINGS BALANCE! This is no longer the sole factor in processing a loan application. We base our loan approval on your ability to repay. While a good savings balance can help your application we do not base loan decisions on this factor alone.
CREDIT UNIONS ONLY OFFER SMALL LOANS! We offer loans big and small loans for many different purposes. We advance loans from as little as €100 to a maximum of €75,000, and more in the case of mortgages.
DOES YOUR CREDIT UNION LOAN STILL DIE WITH YOU? Yes! (Subject to T&Cs) your loan does not form part of your estate .This is A FREE insurance benefit given to our members.
IF I AM UNEMPLOYED YOU WON’T LEND TO ME! We lend based on your ability to
repay. This does not discriminate against the unemployed. Once you have a source of income that allows you to meet all your financial obligations you will be considered for a loan.
THE CREDIT UNION LOAN RATES ARE HIGHER THAN OTHER FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS! If you compare our personal loans with other institutions, we are very competitive. While there are new financial products like PCP and Hire Purchase, and while garages offer 0% finance – in some cases these are not the same as a loan. Make sure you are comparing like for like.
HOW DO I GET A LOAN? Simply submit an application which can be done in the following way: • Complete a written application form these can be found in branch and online • Complete a verbal application form with a staff member over the counter. (If you want more privacy simple ask to be brought into one of our interview rooms) • Over the phone on (01) 8513400 • Online by visiting www.mfcu.ie
You will need to provide us with proof of your income (payslips) and a bank statement (to verify your income and outgoings).

‘Waiting Lists Causing Irreversible Sight Loss’ Sinn Féin Health spokesperson and local TD, Louise O’Reilly has described as “scandalous” reports that thousands of ophthalmology patients, including some from the North County, are waiting over a year for treatment. Many of these patients suffer from macular degeneration and diabetes-related eye disease which requires early treatment to save sight. Thousands of eye patients are at risk of irreversible sight loss as a direct result of these delays. O’Reilly said: “It is absolutely scandalous that some 34,000 ophthalmology patients are waiting on outpatient treatment while some 13,000 are waiting on procedures. With 75 per cent of sight loss unavoidable, the scandal of patients waiting over a year to be seen is directly responsible for causing irreversible sight loss. Inaction on this issue cannot be allowed to continue. I will be raising this issue directly with Minister Simon Harris and I will outline Sinn Féin’s radical plan to deal with the waiting list crisis.” She continued, “Under the current system waiting lists vary drastically across our

Jigsaw National Programme Director and County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler The central message of the event, highlighted the fact that we all have mental health, and suggested ways that we can strengthen and support our own mental health, through the Jigsaw promoted programme “5a-day, for your mental health”. The second part of the event was a 5K run / walk in Balheary Park. This drew on a number of the 5-a-day recommendations including, “connect, be active, and take part”. So the young people headed to the park for the run that facilitated them to connect with other young people and a few brave adults who had a go at the 5K run.

People waiting for similar procedures can wait different lengths of time depending on which hospital they have been referred to.” “We want to do away with that. We would introduce a new IT system based on the one in use in the Portuguese NHS, which would generate new maximum waiting times by transferring those on the list from hospitals that are struggling to meet demand to those that are in a better position to perform the procedure more timely.”

Lynn Kicks More Than The FAI Ball The President of the Employers group within the European Economic and Social Committee, has expressed confidence that the provisional application of CETA, the EU and Canadian trade deal will deliver a greater chance of ratification of what for now is only a provisional agreement. Up to 38 Parliaments, both national and regional, across the EU have to give their consent before the agreement becomes fully By Cathal Boland operational. The President says, “CETA has become almost symbolic as an opportunity for proving the case for international trade in general.” Studies suggest that, when fully operational, the deal will be worth in the region of ¤26bn per annum. It seems that the hope is that CETA will demonstrate to all the full potential of these types of trade deals. Between exit negotiations and the need for new trade deals, the UK really have their hands full. They are expecting to sign a special trade deals with her Commonwealth partners and must be a little miffed, as the EU also shapes up to start talks with Australia one of the UKs targets. In addition they, Ms May’s team, have to cope with the Scottish demand for another break up the Union referendum, along with the failure of the Northern Executive to form a new administration. All this and the Spanish complication over Gibraltar, they really are under pressure. It was good to see Spain state that it would be supportive of an Independent Scotland having an easy passage into the EU. Up till now, it seemed that the Spanish government would oppose such as move as it tries to maintain its own national integrity. Scottish separatists will be very pleased with this, as it will be a major issue when they fight the inevitable referendum. Sinn Fein MEP, Lynn Boylan was rightly exercised over the FAI’s treatment of the Irish women’s national team. She said that their treatment was outrageous. She pointed out that, “Only a few short weeks ago, the European Parliament passed a ‘Report on an integrated approach to Sport Policy: good governance, accessibility and integrity’. This was not the only ball Lynn played last week. She had a good go at FG’s Brian Hayes their Dublin MEP. Hayes had called on the EU Commission to promote the term ‘mompreneurs’ to describe women entrepreneurs in rural areas. Lynn rebuked him saying, “Brian, as we know, revels in the media spotlight, but this attempt to rebrand women in business is as unnecessary as it is cringe worthy.” I note Sean Kelly also put his name to Hayes’ daft amendment, although their female colleagues had more sense. I’m not one to support the reconstruction of language for political correctness, or patronising folly, but what I really don’t get is why the term was to apply only to rural business women.

tive shopping malls, with a variety of interesting shops, providing choice and excellent value.
