Kate Outsmarts All-Comers At Local Shows Eleven-year-old Kate Smart from Portrane is a truly remarkable young girl. Green fingered Kate has just landed the Lucy Crosbie Shield at the Malahide Horticultural Show in the Under 12 section for the sixth year in a row in the Children’s Craft section of the show.

By Patrick Finnegan

On Monday, 17th August a team of volunteers led by community archaeologist, Christine Baker began a month-long community excavation at Swords Castle. Since then, there has been lots of hard work and lots of finds to wash, sort and examine.

By Jennifer McShane Swords Castle: Digging History, is the County Council’s first Community Archaeology project. It’s providing local people with a unique opportunity to take part in a real archaeological excavation for the first time. Working with a small team of professional archaeologists, volunteers have been digging, discovering lots of artefacts and learning how to ‘do’ archaeology. Most of the artefacts found so far are from the nineteenth century like the clay pipes made by Downey Brothers of 8 Brunswick Street Dublin, but on only the second day of the dig volunteers found a piece of a medieval ridge tile – a very exciting find. The excavation programme is designed to answer specific questions which remain about the Castle. Although Swords Castle is one of the best

surviving examples of an archbishop’s residence in the country, and was an important administrative centre, there are some questions that remain unanswered: Is there a graveyard underneath the Castle? Were there buildings within the Castle yard? How old are the different buildings in the complex? Through this project, we hope to answer at least some of these questions. The results will not only tell us more about the Castle’s 800 year history, it will also inform the future development of the Castle as the Council implements the Swords Castle Conservation Plan published in 2014. Excavation takes place each weekday until 11th September and the Council is looking for volunteers to come along and join the team. Excavation work takes place from 10am to 4.30 pm each day. Volunteers must be over 18 years and the Council asks that volunteers come along at 10am and commit to (at least) one full day. An exhibition called ‘My Castle’ also takes place in Swords Castle from now until Friday, September 4th (except for Sunday 30th August). The exhibition explores what the Castle means to the people of Swords.

Kate told the County Leader, “I was really excited to see if I could win the Lucy Crosbie Shield again and I was really happy with the results, because this year I entered 11 categories and won 10 first prizes and one second prize.” The Lucy Crosbie Shield is presented for Children’s Arts and Crafts and is open to children of all ages. What is truly remarkable about Kate’s achievement, is that this is the sixth year in succession that she has won this prize. A delighted Kate, who is a pupil at Donabate Portrane Educate Together National School also entered the Swords Horticultural Show, where she won a cup for highest points and another cup for Best

Exhibit. This was for a skirt made by Kate using a sewing machine. The competitions included displaying various skills like handwriting, making greeting cards, baking a chocolate biscuit cake, making a handcrafted skirt, as well as flower arranging, arts and crafts. One of the disciplines was to plan an organic garden in a biscuit tin. “This was my favourite and I had a lot of fun doing it. I really hope to keep on doing this,” said a proud Kate.

Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) is set to make major adjustments to facilitate Emirates Airlines to begin operating the world’s largest passenger jet at the airport. The new Airbus 380 requires specialist equipment to handle it, such is its size. A specially built airbridge is needed at Terminal 2 to facilitate the giant double decker aircraft, which can accommodate 529 passengers and has a full bar and lounge, as well as showers for its passengers. The DAA has sought clarification from Fingal County Council that the proposed new airbridge will be exempt from planning permission. However it is expected that the airport will face a number of logistical challenges before the huge airline can use the airport. DAA are in the process of making sure that all aircraft can be accommodated at the airport, considering the increase in demand and the importance of ensuring connectivity with international airports, where such aircrafts are located. This comes as Emirates are looking to increase capacity on its Dublin-Dubai route.

O’Brien Wary Of “Monster” Airport Plan Local Green Party representative, Joe O’Brien has hit out at comments from Dublin MEP, Brian Hayes on the proposed expansion of Dublin Airport. Hayes previously said that following the IAG takeover of Aer Lingus, that Dublin Airport could expand to provide a “third runway for Heathrow,” he said. “Mr. Hayes has barely been a year in Europe and Joe O’Brien it’s already clear that he has lost touch with his constituency and is confused about the geography of Ireland. The people of Portmarnock and St. Margaret’s in particular, will not be happy to hear of plans for an extra runway at Dublin Airport. You have to live in these communities to truly understand the negative impact that the current level of airport traffic already has. Potentially doubling this would be very bad for these communities,” O’Brien said. “In addition, what Hayes is proposing would be of very limited economic value to the region. Dublin Airport already handles in the region of 600 flights a day, which is more than enough for any community to endure – do we really want a monster airport like Heathrow, whose two runways handle over 1,300 flights a day?” he continued. “While there is planning permission in place for this runway up to 2017, I predict some serious opposition from local communities if action is taken to turn Dublin Airport into the next Heathrow,” he said.

providing sufficient information to its customers during disruptions. Under European regulations, airlines are obliged to provide adequate information to passengers about their rights in the event of long delays and cancellations. The heat was turned down on Aer Lingus, when the regu-

lator said Aer Lingus had now “agreed to improve the quality of information they provide to passengers during disruptions and have signed legal undertakings confirming this. “ This move removes a potential headache of litigation for IAG, as it enters the final furlong in acquiring Aer Lingus. Minister for Transport Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe said it was “a very important day in the acquisition of Aer Lingus by IAG”.

Over 70 scouts from North Dublin flew out from By Jennifer McShane Dublin Airport to Japan recently to participate in the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Kirara-hama, Yamguchi City, Japan. Amongst the total contingent of over three hundred scouts, the North County was represented by scouts from Skerries, Rush, Swords, Malahide and Portmarnock, all of whom spent numerous months of preparation and training to get them ready to represent Ireland. A World Scout Jamboree takes place somewhere in the world every four years, and this year, the 23rd World Scout Jamboree took place in Kirarahama, Yamguchi, Japan, from the 28th of July to 8th of August. Over 30,000 scouts supported by over 6,000 leaders from over world attended and participated in a wide range of activities, including the Hiroshima Peace Ceremony. Another aspect of the jamboree is the home hospitality programme (known as HoHo), where The Irish Scouts were staying. This gave them an opportunity to learn about Japanese culture, customs and the way of life of scouts from other countries. “It is a testament to the strength of scouting in the locality that almost a quarter of the Irish National contingent hails from the locality,” said a scout leader. Amongst the participants were Portrane couple, Christy and Stephanie McCann who attended what was their fourth World Jamboree together, having been to Korea, the UK and Sweden in the past. Christy McCann who is also International Commissioner for Scouting Ireland said “that a World Scout jamboree was an opportunity of a lifetime and the scouts going to Japan would tell their children and grandchildren about the adventure. ”

A Coffee morning was held recently by the Revival Club at River Valley Community Centre, in aid of ARC Cancer Support group. An impressive total of €500 was collected at the coffee morning, as a result of the efforts of the dedicated ladies of the Revival Club, which included members doing baking and people making donations. “ARC Cancer Support group provides post operative care for patients suffering from cancer. The money came about through the great efforts of all the ladies here at the club,” said Linda. “The whole operation was done on a wing and a prayer, with little enough preparation, but the women here are of great spirit and we are delighted to be able to support a wonderful organisation like ARC,” she concluded.

defence lawyer thriving in New York City’s bustling legal profession. Despite his ambitions, Crocker falls in love with Carrie, a struggling Irish artist who works in Crocker’s go-to café in Downtown Manhattan. Although the two become ever more infatuated by each other, the romance threatens to derail Crocker’s career, with particular regard to a dubious new defence case he has taken on. Does Crocker follow his heart or stick with his legal client obligations? The theme of the story is love, justice and living in the moment. Lauryn said the inspiration for the musical literally just came to her. “The inspiration behind the whole thing just happened I

actually just thought of the story one night as I was sitting at my piano - I had known that I wanted to write a musical for years anyway,” she told the County Leader. Lauryn created Big Shot in its entirety from the storyline, to the music and the song lyrics and she finished her play in her final year of college before getting a production together and showcasing it in both St Pat’s and DCU. As both shows went down a storm, once college was done Lauryn re-cast the show and moved it to a few more venues, before applying successfully to the San Diego Fringe Festival, which Lauryn said was amazing. “The whole experience in San Diego was incredible,

and musical was awarded the ‘Spirit of Fringe’ Award, which we didn’t expect at all,” she continued. Following a successful five nights in California and one night in Mexico the cast were also part of World Theatre History by being part of the first ever BiNational Fringe Festival. Next up for Lauryn, who is currently a vocal trainer in Swords, is

to get Big Shot performed in a Dublin venue and possibly a show in New York City. “We’re looking to try to get more financial and professional help for the next shows to make it bigger and better than ever,” Lauryn added. “We’re still learning as we go along but trying to get things together for the next shows. The dream is to get to New York.”

Lusk Heritage Group Launches New Website The Lusk Heritage Group celebrates 26 years in existence. For more than a quarter of a century they have recorded the heritage, stories and traditions of Lusk and the surrounding towns and villages of the North County. Recently, they launched their new website. They acknowledge the support of the local community in helping them in their work over the years. They are also acutely aware of the number of new people who have moved to Lusk and are such a valuable addition to the culture and lifestyle of their ever expanding community. Along the way, the group have adapted to ever changing technologies such as better cameras, camcorders, word processors and computers. People like Paul Flanagan from Lispopple and

Farrell said, “Of this, €28,000 is being allocated to the Council under the 2015 Anti-Litter & Anti-Graffiti Awareness Grant Scheme, which allows them to support public education and awareness initiatives in relation to both litter and graffiti. There is a particular focus on voluntary initiatives involving schools, young people and community groups.” “It is vital that we support the many committed voluntary groups that do such great work in keeping our towns, villages and countryside clean. We all should have the right to live in a clean well maintained environment. In addition to this, it is important to ensure that Fingal is looking its best during peak tourist season in order to increase the chances of visitors making return visits or recommending Ireland as a destination to others. “A further €17,500 is being allocated under the Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund. This fund supports small scale non-profit local environmental initiatives by communities, individuals and notfor-profit groups. As part of the arrangement for this fund, the local authority will provide matching funding for successful projects which, in previous years, have included community gardens, allotments and compost schemes, rainwater harvesting schemes, educational initiatives and environmental exhibitions. “Any groups seeking funding under the Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund should send an application form to Fingal County Council by 5pm on Friday 28th August 2015. Application forms, local authority contacts, and further information on the LA21 Environmental Partnership Fund can be obtained from the Department’s website and will also be available from the Council itself,” he concluded.

Is Change On The Way? Last week, I suggested that fresh elections might be called in Greece. This week that campaign is underway and for those of us election junkies it will be a fascinating few weeks. The opposition is disorganised, and Alex Tsipras faces defections from his Syria party due to the Government’s failure to deliver on their electoral promises, made only some months ago. Will the defectors and others on the left gather together enough votes to be a strident opposition and will Syriza be forced into forming a government with the centre right? Should such a Government result it will be a serious disappointment to those on the left across Europe who saw Alex Tsipras as the trail blazer for a new political direction across the EU. Tsipras can claim he has a bail out in place and that he is directing a Government of reform. Such success comes at considerable cost to his Party’s reputation. Yet his party seems likely to be the leading force after the election. Many of his previous supporters will not be voting for him on this occasion believing that the bail out terms are not sustainable. Voters will be aware that even the IMF is not prepared to support the bail out saying its terms are too austere for the Greek economy to carry. It is rumoured that the

By Cathal Boland term of debt payback might be extended to sixty years in an effort to bring the IMF on side. Such a move may cause problems for the German Chancellor as sections of her own party refused to support the current bail out. Indeed there are rumours that the lady’s leadership may be for the taking should she continue with her current positions on Greece and migration. The average political life on centre stage is circa twenty years with those who make it to the top job serving for about twelve years. Mrs Merkel has ten years done as Chancellor. One of the challenges any leader faces is to know when to go. I recall Patrick Lindsay, a Fine Gael heavyweight saying back in the seventies that every politician worth their salt wanted to be the leader of their party. Every party leader ought to always remember that. Young loyal politicians are prepared to wait but only for so long. As they age they find that younger members come from behind and challenge them. So the experienced realise that if they are to have their day they must also challenge or be part of history. Aspirant leaders particularly become uneasy when an incumbent appears set on going on and on and on.

Tour De Leinster Coming To North County Tour de Leinster 2015, in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland, is now open for registration. The 4 day, 600 km cycling challenge will take place from 24th to 27th September, with the cycle arriving in the North County on the final day. On Thursday, September 27th participants will cycle through Malahide, Portmarnock and finish up at Howth Hill. The challenge gives cyclists the opportunity to ride with cycling icon, Sean Kelly, while taking in breathtaking scenery, ascents, descents and the open road across Leinster. The funds generated from the Tour de Leinster will directly go to over 1,000 Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) members. DSI receive little government funding and have to fundraise 90 percent of the €2.4 million require to run their services annually. Each participant covers their own costs so that the full funds raised from the Tour de Leinster event will go directly towards benefiting the DSI members through essential services delivered at national and local level, such as home teacher programmes and speech and language therapy. A registration fee of €190 is required from each cyclist to participate in the event. This fee covers two Tour de Leinster jerseys, all tea/coffee/lunch stops, full experienced support crew including outriders and medics, luggage vans including day van and overnight luggage van and a Sunday evening homecoming reception. Each cyclist also covers their own hotel cost of €195 which includes 3 nights bed and breakfast on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night and 3 evening meals. The total cost of participation, including registration and accommodation is €385 per person.

When people speak about shopping in Swords, many think they are referring to the area stretching from the Garda station down to Swords castle. However, the area south of this, from the Garda station as far as Dublin Road, is full of hidden gems for keen shoppers to explore. There is a great array of shops on both sides of this part of Main Street. A few years ago, this was a neglected area, needing development, but now the story is very different. It can be argued that this part of Swords provides the finest dining establishments in the town, where discerning diners and revellers can enjoy some of the finest food, drink and entertainment anywhere in the town. This area is very

popular with families, where children can be catered for in a friendly and safe environment. There is also a great variety of shops in this area, which provide shoppers with a wide range of products, providing choice and value for money. Indeed it is difficult to

walk from Dublin Road as far as the Garda station, without stopping at one of the shops here. The range of products vary from essential household goods, to eateries, to shops offering novelty goods at great prices. The popular expression ‘from a needle to an anchor’ applies to this area of town, where nearly everything can be purchased here. The building of the petrol station on Dublin Road has brought new customers to this part of town and the subsequent opening of new businesses here. Another advantage to shopping here, is that ample car parking is available for customers, thus providing peace of mind, as you explore some of the great bargains on show. For those without cars, there is a reliable and frequent bus service, with stops right in the heart of this part of Main street. Many regards this part of the town as the place to go for necessary services that are difficult to find elsewhere. It is here that you can get keys cut, enjoy a cup of coffee, or have a tasty lunch. You can also have domestic appliances repaired here, or traded in against something better, or you can hire machinery if you need to and you can also

have garments repaired or re-sized here. There are also some excellent pubs here, which attract visitors from far and wide. Much of this part of Swords is steeped in history and it houses St Colmcille’s Well, which is widely regarded as the source of Swords, which is called Sórd, the ancient Irish name for Well. From here, the Round Tower and St Columba’s Church is very convenient and is well worth a visit. Perhaps now is an appropriate time to take a fresh look at this part of Main Street and Dublin Road and take time out to explore some of the delights that are on offer to shoppers in this part of Swords.

Klass Swimwear There’s still a little bit of summer left and if you need some new swimwear, Myleene Klass’s latest collection for Littlewoods has everything you need. The I’m a Celebrity star is back with a shiny new swimwear collection for Littlewoods – her ninth line with the brand. The model mum has designed the range to flatter real women with real bodies. The 37-year-old knows how hard it is to get back into shape after giving birth, and set out to make women feel confident and sexy on their holidays. “I have created a range that I hope appeals to women of all ages,’ she said. “The bikinis suit women of all shapes and sizes so every girl feels fabulous, confident and ultra-glam on the beach this summer.” “As you get older or as your body changes, you shouldn’t have to miss out on the latest trends,” she added. There’s a nice sundress and plenty of accessories, a part of her collection as well, so you’ll have everything you need to hit the beach.

New Shop Open In Swords

Pictured is Tony Lambert, CEO Fingal Dublin Chamber as he congratulates Paul Clayton and Laurence Leonard of Vapour Studio, on the opening of their new shop in Town Centre Mall, Swords.

Vapour Studio has opened a brand new premises in Town Centre Mall in Swords, directly opposite Richies Bike Store. The shop specialises in e-cigarettes, which is providing a safe alternative to the harmful effects of cigarette smoking. The County Leader spoke to Vapour Studio co-owners, Paul Clayton and Laurence Leonard, who were very upbeat about the kind of service they are providing to local residents. “This is all about finding a good way to get people off harmful substances, such as cigarettes and we offer a solution to do that in a very cost effective way. We have also found that recent health studies have shown that e-cigarettes are far less harmful for you than traditional cigarettes. Basically, we are looking for a way to save people a lot of money, as well as saving them from very toxic cigarettes,” said Paul. He was very specific in his reasons for choosing Swords as a place to set up his business. He said, “In the first instance Swords is a beautiful town with a good population, as well as a lot of smokers. We hope to be in a position to cater for their needs along the way, so choosing to set up business here was an easy decision for us,” he said.

Laurence explained that e-cigarettes are made up of nicotine, which satisfies the cravings of smokers, as well as flavourings and glycerine. The smoke is replaced by a vapour which dissipates in the air, leaving no odour behind – basically like steam. E-cigarettes are now becoming more and more acceptable and many pubs and restaurants are coming around to the acceptance that they are completely different to traditional cigarettes.” “The second hand vapour from ecigarettes is not regarded as being harmful to health, unlike second hand smoke,” he said. CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Tony Lambert congratulated Paul and Laurence on their new venture and said, “It is great to see such young entrepreneurs, like Paul and Laurence who have opened Vapour Studio in the Town Centre Mall in Swords. Their commitment to driving their business is infectious and they deserve to succeed. Theirs is one of many new businesses that have set up, or are setting up in Swords and I hope this trend will continue. The Chamber strongly supports new start-up businesses who contribute greatly to the economic development of the area,” he said.

Tidy Towns The Ballyboughal Tidy Towns have been very busy over the summer months. They would like to say a sincere thanks to everyone who has helped to keep the village tidy and looking good. “With your help this year we have been making a special effort to keep the footpaths clean and the verges and hedges neat and tidy within the village. We really appreciate everyone’s efforts, particularly in relation to hedge trimming and road frontage during the judging period,” said the committee. Thanks to Ballyboughal Athletics Club for their generous donation to Ballyboughal Tidy Towns this year. Also, this year we have once again been able to plant up the barrel containers and the planters around the village name place signs,” the group continued. Our autumn quiz in O’Connor’s Pub on Friday, 9th October at 8pm. We look forward to seeing you on the night,” they concluded.

Over the past number of weeks, the County Leader has been giving you some top tips to help you out on your big day, and this week, we’re wrapping up our wedding guides by talking about those finishing touches that make all the difference on your big day:

Assign Someone To The Gifts Have somebody there to take care of any cards or gifts you are given on the day. Ask a member of the bridal party to keep everything together for you, and if there’s any gifts, to jot down names of people on a notepad. This is a good way to make sure nothing goes missing with all the hustle and bustle of the day.

Entertain The Kids If you’re having children at your wedding, you should think about implementing a few structures to keep them entertained. If you are having more than four under agers, hiring a professional to do the entertaining for you is immediately going to take a whole heap off your shoulders. You will absolutely find one of these here in the North County. However if you’re only having one or two, make up some goodie bags with little toys from the local shop a few weeks before.

Prepare For The Weather Unfortunately, we live in a mixed up country, weather wise and, to make your day run smoothly, you’ll have to prepare for the worst! Have somewhere indoors that you can take photos in case it rains, and make sure to get yourself a pretty umbrella for getting you in and out of cars! If you have the (nicer) complaint of too much sun, maybe invest in a bridal parasol, there are some really pretty ones available in many bridal stores here in the North County. If it gets cold, maybe have a pair of vintage gloves on hand to keep warm.

Wedding Decorations You can be as mad as you like with this one! Just like with wedding favours, there are a number of varied, beautiful decorations out there. Try purchasing decorations

that are pastel blue, pink or lavender. You could also put seasonal flowers up as centrepieces at the reception tables. Instead of having wedding guests throw rice or bird seed, you could have them throw rose petals. When it comes to having a spring themed wedding, you are only limited by your imagination!

The icing on the cake for a spring themed wedding could be your menu. Try serving fresh young vegetables such as sugar snap peas, baby carrots, baby asparagus or potatoes. It’s often tricky enough trying to decide the wedding menu, so if you’re unsure go for foods that you know generally people will eat. Get out there and have a unique, special wedding using some of these ideas! Remember, you are only limited by your imagination, so think of creative ways to make your wedding special.

There’s no doubt about it, it’s school time again, the carefree summer holidays will soon be at an end and it will be time to get organised for the busy school year ahead. This time of year can be tough for children, as they try to deal with the hectic transition of going back to school. However, parents can help their children (and the rest of the

family) manage the increased pace of life by planning ahead, being realistic, and maintaining a positive attitude. Indeed, this is a stressful time for parents too, as they try and adapt to this changeable time of year. We have put together a few tips to try and make going back to school as easy for you and your child as possible.

and encouragement.

School Supplies Now is the time of year that all the school supplies will need to be bought. Here in the North County you will find all the supplies you need, at very affordable prices. Be sure to shop around for the best bargains. Some teachers require specific supplies, so save receipts for items that you may need to return later.

Visit School With Your Child

Pictured is Ardgillan Community College student, Ciaran Dunne, who achieved 495 points in his Leaving Cert. He is pictured here with school principal, Michael O'Leary.

If your child is young or in a new school, visit the school with your child. Meeting the teacher, locating their classroom, locker, lunchroom, etc., will help ease pre-school anxieties and also allow your child to ask questions about the new environment. Call ahead to make sure the teachers will be available to introduce themselves to your child.

Before You Start The School Run... Check that everything about your car is in order! You’ll need a professional to do this for you, and the North County has some motor experts that will be able to tend to your car, no matter what you need fixed. Best check before the first day of school starts though, because the last thing you need is your car breaking down on the first morning of the school run!

With summer drawing to a close, there’s still time to get your garden in shape for the upcoming cooler season. A neatly kept garden is the first impression a visitor gets of your house. This first impression is lasting and if your garden is not kept up to scratch, it’s unlikely that your home will be any better. Now is the perfect time to start tidying up your garden. If you need a major clean-up, you will need to engage the services of a professional landscaper. Luckily there are

many such companies here in the North County, who will provide you with a top class service to make sure your garden, the entrance to your home looks at it’s best. With smaller gardens, you may be in a position to undertake small jobs. Sowing a new lawn can be undertaken now, with local garden centres ready to provide you with all your requirements and to give excellent advice. Larger jobs, like paving and decking will give your house an added dimension and

can provide that allimportant outside room, which can be enjoyed in the brighter evenings.

A Garden Pond A water feature in your garden, such as a garden pond, really adds a lovely element to your surroundings. There are all kinds of different ways in which you can include a garden water feature in your garden. To decide which type of garden pond design, or water feature suits your own needs and your own garden best, be sure to

call in some professionals who will help you make the best choice. The North County boasts some of the most esteemed companies around, who will come in and take care of all your needs in this regard. Some other tips to note when choosing your pond: take care if you’ve little ones running around, but as long as you do it doesn’t mean you can’t have a pond or garden water feature - just choose a water feature with no standing water or fit a pond with a sturdy grille over the top, for safety, or a secure fence all around. Choose a pond or water feature which suits the size of your garden, and fits with your chosen garden theme. If you’re unsure of how you might maintain your pond, perhaps a smaller water feature is a good idea? These can be easier to maintain, but still allow you to enjoy water in

your garden. In terms of practical considerations for the pond, you should

try to site yours on a level site, or at the bottom of a sloping garden and away from trees (so that leaves don’t fall into the water, and decay, and dirty the water - use a net across your pond if you can’t avoid trees).

Garden Fencing And Decking The glory and versatility of wood to create a superior natural looking garden can be found when constructing fencing, decking, lining,

panels, etc. All shapes and colours used go to providing the specific mix of timber and wood for that outdoor aspect of house and home to enjoy the summer months to their fullest. Decking is incredibly effective in wet conditions as their design allows for maximum drainage, meaning an end to boggy conditions under foot, meaning cleaner kids and no footprints through the house. Perfect for climbing frames, table and chairs for BBQ evenings as well. Fencing can be cut to ornate designs to set out a decorative perimeter to any garden which can also be stained to any shade of teak, pine, etc. Professional deck layers and fence erectors provide a crucial professional finish to a garden or garden decking area for BBQ’s, children’s swings, tables, chairs and more.

Henchy Wants More Staff For Donabate Facility Pictured at the official opening ceremony of the International Baseball Centre in Ashbourne are Irish Baseball player Paul Carey (right) with his father Peter Carey

Local councillor Adrian Henchy (FF), is keen to see staffing levels at Sophia Housing in Donabate increase. Sophia Housing provides support for people who, for any number of reasons, find themselves out of their own home. Sophia Housing provides individuals and families with support and housing to meet their own individual needs. The service is holistic in

nature, as Sophia support people to reach their own potential at their own pace. Sophia Housing provides different types of accommodation and support for people who have different housing and support needs. Henchy told the County Leader: “I had the opportunity at this meeting to find out for myself the support and service the staff provide at Sophia

QUALITY, VALUE AND STYLE

Remember Us, the Special Needs support group had an outstanding year in their efforts to get funds to acquire their own base in Balbriggan. The target is €600,000 and due to the efforts of their wonderful volunteers, they are now at €310,000. The group held their end of season party on Thursday last at Flemington Community Centre in Balbriggan, which was attended by a large gathering, who generated a wonderful atmosphere. The event was attended by local councillor, Tony Murphy, who was impressed by the vibrancy and energy generated by the group. Also present was local Special Olympics hero and member, Billy Kane from Swords, who was the centre of attention, as he displayed his collection of two gold, three silver and one bronze medal which he won for gymnastics at the recent Special Olympics in Los Angeles. Remember Us founder, Nora Roban said, “We are delighted to welcome new members to our group , who have gelled really well with the rest of the members. This year, we had some fantastic outings, including one to Moneygall, Co. Offaly, where Dorothy Reilly invited us to her wonderful home to partake in games. Her husband, Dr James Reilly also welcomed us,” she said. Other outings undertaken by the group included visits to Tayto Park, Causey Farm, Malahide Castle and Glendalough. The next outing for Remember us will be the much anticipated Golf Classic at Balbriggan Golf Club on Friday, 4th September.

Housing in Donabate and to get their feedback on how they are integrating

within the community. The meeting also gave me the opportunity to voice the concerns of the local community and the issues that have been raised locally to me in regard to the Sophia Housing facility. The size of the facility is generally at maximum capacity with 21 families, all of whom are going through a very challenging and stressful times in their lives. I would be strongly of the view that the nature of the service and the facility requires 24/7 staffing cover, especially in the evenings and at weekends which can be a very vulnerable time for individuals and families,” he explained.

15

“Following this meeting with the staff of Sophia Housing, I have made representation to both the County Council and the HSE requesting an urgent review of the staffing levels at this facility and that the facility is staffed 24/7 and not just MondayFriday 9-5,” said Henchy. “I have no doubt that if the facility is staffed 24/7 by properly trained social care workers to provide the help, support and rehabilitation for these vulnerable individuals and families, the number of incidents at evenings and weekends will reduce,” he concluded.

Reduced Commercial Rates For Local Sports Clubs Certain sports clubs in the North County can now apply for an exemption to commercial rates under a Fianna Fáil plan that has been initiated in a new law. Local sports organisations which have a bar on their premises are now able to apply to have their commercial rates reduced, so that they would only apply to the licensed premises, and not the full sports grounds. Applications are being accepted up to Tuesday, September 15th. Local Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF), has welcomed progress on the Fianna Fáil initiative and is urging all clubs in the North County to check if they can avail of the reduced rates. “At the moment, clubs with licensed premises must pay commercial rates on all of their premises despite the fact that the vast majority of their space is used for sporting and voluntary purposes. This unfairly penalises clubs that have bars and I am delighted that the Government has seen the merits in this common sense measure and included it in the Valuation Act 2015,” O’Brien said. “In order to get the benefit of this partial exemption in commercial rates sports clubs need to be registered under the Registration of Clubs Act, complete an application form and supply supporting documentation on or before September 15th next,” he explained. “This is really positive initiative for clubs in the locality. Our sports clubs are part of the very fabric of our local communities and should continue to support them as best we can. Legislative changes such as this can have a really positive impact and I’m pleased to see it being implemented,” concluded O’Brien.
