FF To Select Just One Candidate Local Students Participate In Enterprise Awards As the Christmas shopping season is now in full swing, student entrepreneurs across the North County are busy preparing their products and services for sale, as part of the biggest-ever Fingal Student Enterprise Awards Programme. Over 2,000 students will this year, participate in what is the largest programme of its kind in the country, co-ordinated by the Fingal Local Enterprise Office. The annual enterprise programme sets out to encourage students in secondary and primary schools to research and manage their own business, with support from local business mentors. Now in its fourteenth year, a record number of 2,268 students from 23 secondary schools and eight primary schools including the North County are participating in the 2014/2015 programme, setting up and running their own businesses between now and the County Finals in March 2015.
With the countdown on to the Fingal County Final, the Christmas period is a key opportunity for the young entrepreneurs to drive sales and grow their businesses. The secondary schools programme is sponsored, for the sixth consecutive year, by the Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board. Fingal’s Student Enterprise Programme is part of the ‘National Student Enterprise Awards’ competition, which annually sees over 17,000 students compete on the national stage. Category winners from the Fingal County Finals will advance to the National Student Enterprise Awards, to be held in April 2015. Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise, the County Council said: “With the support of the schools, the local business community, and sponsors, these students, guided by our mentoring programme, are gaining invaluable experience in the world of business,” he said.

The plan is that head office will impose newly elected Balbriggan councillor, Brian Dennehy to run, closer to the election date. This would mean that O’Brien will have a clear run in
the southern area of the constituency, while Dennehy would be expected to hold the Fianna Fail votes in the northern end of the constituency. There is a fear that, without a Fianna Fail candidate in the northern end of the constituency, the strong Sinn Fein
candidate will mop up the Fianna Fail vote. All is not well in Fianna Fail Dublin Fingal, with key activists resigning their positions. The party was involved in a selection controversy earlier in the year, when Clara la Combre from Donabate, was the clear favourite to contest the local elections for Swords Ward in last May’s local elections. Malahide local, Aisling Gilligan has landed the lead role in upcoming panto ‘Sleeping Beauty’, which will be performed from 1st – 4th January in the Liberty Hall Theatre, Eden Quay. No stranger to playing the leading lady, Aisling will play Princess Elizabeth, otherwise known as Sleeping Beauty, in the well-known fairytale alongside a cast of familiar faces. Aisling, a Psychology student in UCD, has been performing from a young age and is a graduate of Malahide Dance School where she currently teaches dance. She studied ballet in the Ella
Doran Dublin Ballet School for 10 years and now attends Dance Ireland. Her roles to date include Benjamin in ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’, Gloria in ‘Forbidden Planet’, Snow White in ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ and Maid Marion in ‘Robin Hood’. Furthermore, Aisling will be joined on stage by many of her own students, as kids from Malahide Dance School will make up the kids’ chorus for this production. Opening on New Year’s Day, and featuring talented young performers from local stage schools in Malahide and surrounding areas, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ tells the story of a beautiful princess and her evil aunt who wants to be queen. The evil aunt casts a spell on the princess at birth which can only be broken by true love’s first kiss.

Council Launches Business Support Initiative The County Council have launched a major business support initiative, that will provide €100,000 in grant funding for businesses across the county. The launch at County Hall, Swords, was performed by Deputy County Mayor, Ted Leddy, in the presence of Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid, Director of Economic Development Services, Ethna Felten, and Tony Lambert, CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber. With an allocation of €20,000 euros for each local Electoral area, the County Council Business Promotion Grant scheme will fund initiatives aimed at promoting, generating or sustaining business across the county. The aim of the business promotion grant is to generate and sustain business activity, by increasing footfall, by encouraging businesses in an area to work together to promote business activity, and by encouraging the business community to work more closely with the local authority, and other public agencies. Qualifying initiatives include, marketing or promoting a business area or category (including
online campaigns), events that showcase products or services in an area, or that attract customers to a business area. The Business Promotion Grant will fund up to 75 per cent of costs for an initiative, with the applicant providing the remaining 25 per cent. Total funding may be provided in exceptional circumstances. Speaking at the official launch, Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid, said, “I am very pleased to launch Fingal County Council’s Business Promotion Grant Scheme. I know how important it is for businesses and retailers to market and promote themselves and their products, and how difficult it can be for some of them to find the financial resources to do this.” “This grant is intended to offer meaningful support in this area and I would encourage any business in the area, that is planning an initiative to promote their business or product, to consider making an application under the scheme,” he said. Full details of the Business Grant Promotion Scheme are available on www.fingal.ie.

The local man told the County Leader that the book has been very well received since it was released in November this year. “The feedback has been brilliant,” he said. “It has encouraged me to finish my second novel, which I am hoping to have published some time next year.” When asked to give a brief synopsis he said: “The book is primarily set in South Florida, where I lived Pictured here is Frank and worked for a time. Maguire Seeks Update On Balbriggan Link Road At a recent Council meeting, local councillor Gráinne Maguire (NP), sought a follow up from the provision of monies for Castlemill Link Road in Balbriggan in the Capital Programme. She asked the Chief Executive, Paul Reid, to advise what the procedure is now for the project to begin and for a time frame for completion. The Council confirmed that work is progressing to acquire the lands necessary for the construction of the road and contract documents are being reviewed to ensure compliance with government requirements. “Pending successful acquisition of the lands, it is expected that a tender for the works will issue early in the New Year,” the Council said. “Construction works will take 12 months to complete,” they concluded.
Start Strong has welcomed the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, James Reilly’s recent statement, that he will not introduce tax credits as a way of reducing the high cost of ‘childcare’ for parents. Start Strong is a coalition of organisations and individuals seeking to advance children’s early care and education in Ireland. Ciairín de Buis, Director of Start Strong said: “We need to do something about the cost of ‘childcare, but we need to do it in a way that Minister Dr. Reilly benefits children. Parents here pay some of the highest costs in the world, but that is no guarantee that their children are getting a high-quality service. The quality of early care and education is very variable in this country. We need to use government funding as a way to ensure no child is in a poor quality service.” “As a country, we invest very little in our young children. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) recommends spending one per cent of GDP on ‘childcare’ services. Ireland spends 0.2 per cent of GDP. “The debate sparked by the Donna Hartnett letter isn’t just about the high cost of ‘childcare’ though. It’s about how we balance our work and family commitments. We need more flexible working arrangements and longer periods of paid leave for parents. Most parents are just trying to do their best for their children and they need to be supported to do that,” added Ms de Buis.

Then it’s back to Crumlin Hospital for her bone marrow transplant operation at the end of January. “We’re all keeping our fingers crossed that all will go well and that she can avoid infection. She will be in isolation for a period of six to eight weeks after the transplant,” said Gerry. Last Saturday, The Hill 16 Army, who have adopted Molly as their mascot, held a benefit night at Craobh Ciaran’s clubhouse at Parnell Park, which turned out to be a great success. In the run up to Christmas, there will be a number of fundraising events, particularly bag packing in Dunnes and SuperValu supermarkets in Balbriggan. So if any large vehicles are

This will give some comfort, because we, in the newer areas of Swords, seem to be afflicted with abandoned cars and other vehicles taking up shared parking spaces in estates, and areas like this,” he concluded.

Swords councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) has reported that there appears to be an upsurge in burglaries in the Brides Glen/Bunbury Gate area of Swords. He told the County Leader, “I Cllr. Butler have received a number of crime report emails from residents, and I have been monitoring the Bunbury Gate / Brides Glen Neighbourhood Group facebook page. I have reported these issues to the Chief Superintendent. It appears that one method being used by the criminals is a pole, with a magnet through the letterbox, trying to get car keys. I am appealing to all residents to take extra care and report anything at all suspicious to 999 or Swords Garda Station at (01) 6664700. I have asked them for more patrols of the estate,” he said.

The breakfast, which was a great success, was hosted by Denise Boyne and was attended by about 100 people. Also in attendance were Laura Brennan’s parents Pat and Nuala, as well as her sister, Anna. Laura was a student at Pobal Scoil Iosa in Malahide, who sadly passed away when she was only 16 years old. Her parents, Pat and Nuala then set up the Laura Brennan Charitable Trust in her honour Committee member, Denise Alford said, “The fund was set-up to raise much needed funds for deserving causes within the local and surrounding communities. The fund has many aims and objectives, and gets great support from the local community. involved in the charity because Laura and my daughter were great friends at school, and we know the Brennan family very well. Pat and Nuala put on a gala every year, including a golf classic and my daughters really wanted to get involved in some way, so we ran
a night for the younger age group two years ago, which was a great success,” she said. “Then last year, we held a Breakfast at Tiffany’s event here at Malahide Rugby Club, so we decided to repeat it again this year, owing to it’s success last year,” she said. See pictures of the event on page 4

Charity Christmas Day Swim In Portmarnock The annual Christmas Day swim in Portmarnock, in aid of St Francis Hospice is looming, and the organisers are calling on locals from around the North County to get involved. Over ten years ago, the Jesson family of Onward Walk, Portmarnock, were devastated when their dad, Billy died from a rare brain tumour. They felt compelled to do something in his memory and thought it was important give something back to St Francis’s Hospice in Raheny, for all the care and support they received. The first Billy Jesson Christmas Swim took place the year he died in 2002, and was followed with a Golf Classic a year later. Over the past ten years, over 70,000 euro has been raised for the hospice. Times have changed and it is more difficult to raise money, but the Portmarnock community is a generous one and last Christmas Day, more than 80 locals braved the elements of the Irish Sea for this great cause. The coordinators of the event hope that this year, the swim will be bigger and better than ever. Why not join in for a swim, or just come down and soak up the atmosphere; the swim is at 11.00am on Portmarnock Beach and it’s a great start to Christmas morning. You can set up a ‘mycharity page,’ or for more information or a sponsorship card, call 086-888-5285. Be sure to wear your santa hat!

Louis Comes To Loughshinny X Factor star, Louis Walsh will be amongst the names visiting The Yacht in Loughshinny this December 21st for The Loughshinny Christmas Party in aid of St Vincent de Paul. This year’s event follows the sold out gig at the same venue last Christmas. Last year, the capacity crowd was entertained by Mary Black, Paul Harrington and local singer Ryan O’Shaughnessy, from Skerries. This year’s event promises to be even bigger, according to the organisers, with Louis agreeing to be there to kick off the proceedings. “Louis had a prior engagement when we approached him,” explains organiser Maeve Kearney. “But he has moved things around so he could be there for the start of the night.” The X Factor judge said he was really looking forward to coming to Loughshinny. ”I had heard it was a fantastic night last year,” continued Walsh. “So when they asked me I had no problem coming along. It’s going to be a great night!” Tickets for the event priced €15 are available from The Yacht Bar in Loughshinny.

Lynn Boylan, SF’s MEP is the lead author of a report ‘European Citizen’s Initiative Right to Water,’ which was commissioned after some two million people signed a petition in regard to this issue. Lynn is opposed to the payment of the new Water Charges and sees water as a human right. She recently attended a conference on water pricing that was hosted by Aqua Publica Europea, after which she slammed the European Commission, after a representative of the institution asserted that Irish people don’t understand that they have to pay for water. She said: “The Commission is once again demonstrating its arrogance. Irish people understand perfectly well what is happening in Ireland with the water

By Cathal Boland charges. Irish people are so aware that they are refusing to pay for water twice. We already pay for our water through general taxation and the wholly inept and shambolic entity that is Irish Water has also been funded by Irish taxpayers.” “The Irish government alludes to conservation being a factor in the introduction of this tax. It is appalling that 40 per cent of domestic water is being lost through leaking pipes. Instead of the government investing in the aged and decrepit infrastructure, it has spent half a billion euro of the National Pension Reserve Fund, in setting up a quango that is not fit for purpose and in the installation of water meters,” she continued. It’s good to see our MEPs playing an important part
in the development of policy in Europe, and one can expect that the Commission will get a pretty strong report from her. Just as the Government has gotten itself in real trouble setting up Irish Water in compliance with the dictates of Europe, we note that the Commission has extended by three months, the period in which France Belgium and Italy are required to demonstrate that they are working to bring their budgets into line with Budget rules. The big question is will three months be enough, or will some further fudging of the margins be required. Berlusconi the former Italian PM thinks so, as he announces that the creation of a second currency is required thereby allowing Italy regain part of monetary sovereignty. What he means is money they can print themselves.
Daly To Contest Charges Local TD Clare Daly (ULA), and Independent TD Mick Wallace are to fully contest charges that they unlawfully entered a restricted zone at Shannon Airport last July. At Ennis District Court last week, Daly and Wallace apperred concerning their alleged illegal entrence into a restricted area of Shannon airport on July 22nd last. The TDs sat through three hours of evidence in other cases including tales of herion and alcohol fulled local crime before their cases were called. Solicitor for the two, Gareth Noble told Judge Patrick Durcan that the matter “is to be fully contested” with the cases likely to last one day in the district court.
Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and Peaceful 2015

Singers Needed In Ballyboughal Singers are required in Ballyboughal, where Christmas Carols rehearsals have started. They take place on Wednesday at 7.30pm in Ballyboughal Church and additional singers are very much welcome. The Carol service itself will take place on Wednesday, 17th December at 8pm in Ballyboughal Church with refreshments afterwards in the national school across the road, kindly provided by the Community Council.
FF To Select Just One Candidate Continued from page 1 over for selection, and has since left the party. In another surprising development, constituency delegate, Aidan Brophy also resigned from the party recently. When this newspaper made contact with O’Brien, he denied that HQ instructed that only one candidate was to be selected, and he said that a full selection process would take place on the night. However, our sources believe there may be a sting in the tail for Fianna Fail, should Kennedy, who was unavailable for comment, be encouraged by his supporters to run as an independent candidate, given the upsurge in the popularity of independents in the opinion polls. That scenario would firmly put the cat among the pigeons, should it come to pass. A decision to run just one candidate in this constituency would fly in the face of the party’s tradition in this
area, where there has always been a strong party vote.
Happy Christmas & Best Wishes for the New Year To both our Two and Four legged Customers!

Winter Gardening It is the popular perception of many amateur gardeners that during winter, it is time to shut up shop and wait for spring to continue tending to their garden. But with some perseverance and know how, you can keep your garden going strong all year round. Just remem-
bering to do simple things like never walk on your lawn when it is frozen and making sure your garden is always clear of leaves, twigs, dead plants etc will go a long way to ensuring your garden can stay healthy through winter. Here are some extra guidelines you can follow to help you maintain your garden until spring is upon us.

Plants For smaller plants in containers, a quick and easy way to ensure they are protected for winter, is wrapping them in bubble wrap. Garden centres will most likely sell a horticultural version that will have silver foil lining inside. As for indoor plants, make sure that they are getting enough light, by moving them closer to windows, and also keep turning them as to make sure they don’t become lopsided.

New Banking Initiative For Portmarnock Students
Magician, Pat Fallon mesmerised children with his magic tricks at the Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords last Saturday. He is pictured here with Mohammed Al-Ali, Caelan Barry, Ava Cavanagh and Josh Toolin
Local Business To Open New Office In Swords The students of Portmarnock Community School are the latest group to set up their own school bank, as part of the ‘Build A Bank’ campaign. Jackie Kelly from AIB Bank in Malahide attended the launch, and was on hand to help the students as their bank went live. The launch was part of the school’s campaign for AIB’s Build a Bank Challenge, where schools from all over Ireland create a school bank and are judged on their strategy and success. A team of six students from each school are selected to set up and manage their own bank, and get involved in everything from branding to promoting. They will also engage with the community, source new customers and encourage regular savings. “The Transition Year (TY) students organise this with our AIB branch, and Portmarnock Community School have taken part in this initiative over the past few years,” Kelly explained to the County Leader. “Their bank will be called
the FBI Bank, which stands for Future Banking Initiative.” “The whole idea is that students open proper bank accounts, where they can deposit savings and so on,” she continued. “Students are trained by myself, so that they know how to open bank accounts and go through all the regulations that come with this.” She pointed out that all students were interviewed over a week-long period to determine who would be best suited for the roles within the bank. “This bank will go on for the entire year, and the students will organise different incentives competitions and so on - to encourage students to open accounts. “And who knows, we may get a few future bankers out of this,” she said, smiling. “This is all gearing up to Regional Finals, held in March next year, where each school will be invited to present their bank and results. The best 10 regionally will be invited to present to around 300 people,” she concluded.
Pictured at the opening of the School Bank at Potmarnock Community School, in conjunction with AIB, Malahide are students, Conor Harford, Lide Irurzun, Stephania Sidiropoulou, Jackie Kelly (AIB Malahide), Diarmuid O'Hanrahan, Jordan Hoey, Oisin Reilly, Mark Shearman and Cian Comiskey
The property market is facing a more certain 2015, following a period of uneven growth nationwide over the past 18 months, according to Balbriggan-based John Cumisky of REA Cumisky, part of national estate agency group Real Estate Alliance. “We are definitely seeing the market taking its breath in the more-heated sectors, such as central Dublin, where we have seen a softening of demand over the past six weeks,” said John, who confirmed his intention to open a second office in Swords during Q1 2015. “We believe that the economy will continue to improve for the next few years, as a result of which we have decided to strengthen our position in the North County by stepping gently into the North County capital,” he said. “In Dublin you are still going to have a lack of supply and no great increase in the new homes coming to market. However, the panic buying has gone out of a market that had seen an average house appreciate by almost 31 per cent over the past 18 months,” he said. “Demand and prices in tier two, which is the
commuter belt Balbriggan and Swords and major cities such as Cork and Galway, are beginning to take on a more predictable look after rapid growth in 2014. The third tier, which are the local remaining towns and surrounding areas, have shown an increase in recent
months, albeit at a sustainable level, and for the first time each county has shown an increase,” he explained. John has hailed the past year as an exciting one for the group, and the property market, confirming that more REA Group offices will be announced nationwide during 2015.

The Helix Health Pharmacist Awards are aimed at raising money for the Pharmacy Benevolent Fund and ‘celebrating excellence’ across all disciplines of the pharmacy profession. The Spirit of S
ian and Eric met 14 years ago and have two boys aged 7 and 9. In May 2012, Eric was diagnosed with leukaemia. After two bone marrow transplants and the cancer returning in the summer, he then developed an infection that many transplant patients suffer from after the operation and unfortunately the condition was in the liver. Sian was desperate to find a place to stay over Christmas period to take away the pressure that’s was on the family. After hearing her interview on a local radio programme the managing director of Bewleys and Moran Hotel Group got in touch. He offered Sian and the children a place to stay in Bewleys of Ballsbridge over the festive season and extended his gesture outside the holidays. He also organised VIP trips for the children to RDS Wonderland and assured that Santa would visit the hotel.
Ryan Suffern, an 8-year-old boy, wrote an extremely selfless letter. He sent an early plea to Santa Claus, asking him if he could intervene and stop his twin sister from being bullied at school. 7-year-old Delaney Brown was diagnosed with leukaemia. One of her Christmas wishes was to hear real carol singers outside her home. Her mother set up a Facebook page to ask for help. On 22nd December, some 7,000-8,000 people showed up in the small town of West Reading to sing. The carol singers finished off with a rendition of “Happy Birthday”, to celebrate her birthday two days before. in December 2013, Pope Francis gave Christmas presents to 2000 immigrants at a shelter near the Vatican. Each gift package contained a Christmas card signed by Pope Francis, postal stamps and pre-paid international calling cards and a free day-pass for the metro in Rome. The packages were sent to allow them to write letters and call their loved ones during Christmas. The presents were distributed by Papal almoner Archbishop Konrad Krajewski and sisters at the shelter. A few days before Christmas 1943, a German fighter pilot, Franz Stigler, spared a crippled American pilot. The bomber of Charlie Brown was severely damaged by German fighters, so he couldn’t keep up with the formation. Franz Stigler, a pilot of the German Luftwaffe, was ordered to shoot his crippled bomber down, but instead decided to allow him and his crew to fly back to their airfield in England. 40 years later, both became friends and the friendship that the two developed, lasted until their deaths several months apart. A NYPD Officer, DePrimo, was stationed at his foot post, when he noticed an elderly homeless man, shoeless, on the sidewalk. He went to the nearby shoe store and purchased $100 all-weather boots and socks for him. During World War I, on around Christmas Day 1914, many German and British troops sang Christmas carols to each other across the line, as a result of of holiday celebrations in the trenches and gestures of goodwill between enemies. It is also true that British and German soldiers played football together in No Man’s Land. The soldiers on the Western front did not expect to celebrate on the battlefield, but even a world war could not destroy the Christmas spirit. Eamon, has for the last six years visited the Carrick Dog Shelter with a gift of food for the rescue dogs homed there every Christmas. He does it completely out of his own pocket, saving up a little of his pension money each week.

1800 938 000 Christmas Wishes From
All year long, a family from Vancouver throws their extra money into a jar. On Christmas Eve, they count the change that usually comes in around $ 140. They exchange it for big bills and go out for a late dinner. They order a nice $ 30 dinner and then leave a $ 140 tip as a wonderful Christmas surprise, because they feel sorry for the server who has to work on Christmas Eve and isn’t able to be home with his family. They carry out this tradition every year.

Joel Berlinsky, a 61-year-old real estate investor and landlord in Los Angeles, is giving his tenants a $ 70 dollar rent break for Christmas for the last 15 years – a gesture that costs him more than $ 8,000, he does this to help single women with children in his units and to give them the opportunity to buy a gift for their children. Two 9-year-old twin brothers from North Carolina gave up their Christmas money to purchase supplies and, with help of their grandmother, made 10 fleece blankets to distribute to hurricane victims.

‘The Simplest Prayer’ - A Review ‘The Simplest Prayer’ is a guide on how to love, live
REMEMBERING OUR
VOLUNTEERS
By Cathal Boland & Una O’Brien The seventieth annual convention of the Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society was recently held in Naul. The Society, formed in 1944, was set up to assist Volunteers and their family members who were adversely affected by their participation in the events of Easter Week 1916 and the subsequent War for Independence. The Society is non-political, holding Easter Commemorations and annual ceremonies marking the Battle of Ashbourne. Some 114 Fingal Volunteers of the 5th Battalion were arrested after the Raising and most were detained in the Frongoch Prisoner of War camp in Wales for some months. Three of their number were killed in action during the week, while some leading members were sentenced to death but fortunately reprieved. The Fingal Battalion, under the Command of Lusk school teacher Thomas Ashe, successfully operated capturing RIC barracks, disabling rail lines and communications. On the Friday, they attacked the RIC barracks at Ashbourne forcing its surrender,
at which point they were counter attacked by a large number of reinforcements drawn from across Meath. Although greatly outnumbered, they succeeded in defeating their attackers. In doing so they used tactics which would later form the model which Dick Mulcahy, 2nd in command of the battalion, deployed nationally in the War of Independence. Under the Chairmanship of Noel McAllister the Convention agreed an ambitious programme of events. The programme of Cultural, Educational, Sporting, Drama and Commemorations is designed to engage all during 2015 and through to its culmination in May 2016. Relatives of the deceased members of the 5th Battalion and the Fingal Brigade are asked to invite home family and friends who may be living abroad to join in the events and commemorations. The Society is also looking for young people to volunteer and take part actively in the planned events. For further information, or to join the society please contact Una O’Brien on: 0876365711.
Bennie McAllister This week’s profile is on Bennie McAllister, 5th Batt. IRA and uncle of Noel McAllister, Chairman of Fingal Old IRA: “I joined the Irish Volunteers in the latter part of 1913 or early 1914. I joined at Donabate. I cannot remember who was present on that particular date. Previous to this, I was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Volunteers really started from them. On joining I made no declaration or took no oath. We were given Membership Cards. We paid a small weekly subscription – as far as I can remember 3d. per week towards purchase of arms, equipment, uniform.” “The Company took part in the Howth GunRunning. All paraded at Raheny and there joined the Dublin contingent when they came along. We understood it was field exercises we were going on. We marched to Howth. On arrival at Howth Pier, we got to understand it was gun-running we were on. Excitement now ran very high but good discipline was maintained. Our Company was drawn up across the Pier (town end) to prevent anyone except Volunteers getting on to the pier. Police and coastguards tried to get on to the pier but were refused. The coastguards then sent up rockets. Either Skerries or Lusk Company relieved us and we proceeded down to get our rifles, but by this time they had all been given out. I jumped on to the boat and succeeded in getting one and ten rounds of ammunition. Mr. Derham of Skerries also got one. We formed up again and marched to Raheny and home. I had the only rifle the Company got. It was the type known as Howth Mauser. Subsequently, the Company purchased six or seven Italian (Garabaldi) rifles.” The above is part of the witness statement of Bennie McAllister, 5th Batt. IRA and uncle of Noel McAllister, Chairman of Fingal Old IRA. Bennie joined the Volunteer movement almost at its inception, in late 1913. He was present at Howth when the Asgard arrived to unload its shipment of guns He was also present at the Battle of Ashbourne, at the surrender in Newbarn, Kilsallaghan and was imprisoned in Frongoch, Wales. The society will be running a profile on an Old IRA Volunteer from Fingal, every month for the next 16 weeks.

and laugh without looking back into the past, which can sit like a devil on our backs, and fearing the future, through praying, having patience and being kind to ourselves and others around us. It contains advice for those in any need; in need of comfort, to forgive and to find peace of heart and soul. However, it is only for those, who believe in God, but don’t know how to express their appreciation towards him, when to pray and what to say. With practical advices, it shows how to bring Jesus into our lives with simple prayers for every day and every circumstance; when seeking comfort, if we are angry or
want to thank a very special friend. It contains prayers for every need. Yet, it still focuses on the core of our lives; ourselves, the burdens we have to take, our fears and hopes, but reminds us that we are not alone, even in the darkest times. Although I often disagreed with the beliefs of the Irish Franciscans, their kind words made me slow down my thoughts, focus on what is important in my life, and made me forget about my own beliefs; that I’m
not religious. This is for surely not a book for a confirmed atheist, nor for people of other
beliefs, but gives a new perspective on what praying truly means and its powerful impact.
