It happened to me and a number of my neighbours over a number of weekends last year.” “As well as a cost for householders, it is also a significant cost for the Council who have to clean up the mess. It costs them a considerable amount of time and effort to clean up the damage to green areas and paths, as mini-diggers have to be diverted from other works to scrape the plastic residue from tarmac paths,” he said.

A newly married couple decided, on their wedding day, to return to the place where Cupid’s Arrow struck first - at a bus stop in Swords. Stephen Craven from Balrothery and Trish Barton, originally from Co Laois, tied the knot on Friday, 23rd May last at Balscadden Church, and on their way to the reception at Roganstown Hotel, the smitten couple decided to stop off at the No 43 bus stop at the bottom of Main Street in Swords, where their romance started more than two years ago. Fears Over Possible Waste Plant In Lusk A public meeting is to be held in the Round Towers GAA Clubhouse, Lusk on Thursday 5th June at 8.00pm, to discuss a proposal to build a waste treatment plant at Regeens, Lusk. The plant is a commercial venture, with the capability of processing approximately 33 per cent of the brown bin waste generated by the city area of Dublin, making it one of the largest waste plants of its kind in Ireland. The brown bin waste will be mixed with animal slurry imported from as far away as 50 kilometres, in order to provide the feed stock for this Anaerobic Digester. Local residents are concerned that, yet another attempt is being made to dump non-local problems in the Cllr. Ken Farrell general Lusk area. A spokesman told the County Leader, that there are concerns regarding the environmental impact on the area, the increase in traffic volumes on the already poor road infrastructure, the potential for long term health issues, foul odours, as well as the effects on property prices for those already in negative equity. The longer term implications of Lusk, being seen as the solution to the problems of others, is of great concern to locals,” the statement concluded. Meanwhile, newly elected councillor, Ken Farrell (Lab), a resident of Lusk told the County Leader, “I’m 100 per cent behind the residents, that such a project should be foisted upon them. This is another attempt to dump on a rural community, with Lusk now being seen as a soft touch. The determination of the people of Lusk has been proven, in their organisation and resistance to the Monster Sewage Plant, which had been proposed for a location adjacent to this. We will fight this to the bitter end, and emerge victorious once again,” said a determined Farrell.

Locals Residents Object To Water Charges

Local Athletes Set For Special Olympics

By Patrick Finnegan @TheCountyLeader

A gathering of concerned residents, from Skerries, Loughshinny, Rush and Lusk, have come together, as a nonpolitical unit, to protest against water charges that are coming down the line. The group gathered at the Raven Roundabout on Dublin Road in Lusk on Wednesday, 28th May last, where they were supported by drivers passing by, who honked their horns in support of the group’s protestations. Speaking to the County Leader, organiser, Robert Murphy emphasised that the group is not aligned to any political group and EVE Estuary, Swords athletes are preparing for a crack at the 2014 Special Olympics Ireland Games. It is a great opportunity and achievement for the athletes to represent both their centre and their region in the Games. HSE EVE Estuary Centre, which is located at Lissenhall, Swords is a rehabilitative training centre for individuals with intellectual disabilities. They provide a foundation skills training programme, which is designed to equip participants with basic personal, social and work related skills, to enhance their quality of life and enable them to progress towards an increased level of independence and to integrate them into their communities. Participants take part in Special Olympics competitions and activities through the sports, health and leisure module. The aim of this module is to improve and maintain the participants’ physical fitness and to educate them on how theses activities can improve their quality of life. Emma Tierney, Sports, Health and Leisure instructor, told the County Leader, “Competitions are run on a four year cycle, with athletes progressing from Area, to Regional to Special Olympics Ireland Games and finally to a World Games, whereupon the cycle commences again. The athletes are elated to have made it this far and cannot wait for the games to commence,” she explained. The games will take place over four days in several venues throughout Limerick from the 12th to 15th June 2014. To kick off the big event, there is an opening ceremony on Thursday 12th June, with a parade through Limerick City. The manager, Linda Nolan and staff of EVE Estuary would like to congratulate the athletes on their success so far and wish them all the best of luck in Limerick.

they have specifically asked politicians to stay away from their protests. He said, “We, are a group of ordinary citizens who are opposed to water metering and water taxes. One of our members, started up a facebook page a few months ago, and he asked me to get involved. We are actively involved for about three or four weeks and our aim is to make sure that we can create an active demonstration against water meters being installed, and I want to emphasise that we are, in no way, political. “Our movement is growing every day. At first it was a little slow to get going, but as you can see from the numbers here today, people are very annoyed about this tax, and to water metering. This is only our second activity and we hope to organise at least one every week in different location,” he said.

St. Finian’s Community College, Swords hosted a Mental Health Awareness Week from 28th April to 2nd May last, to highlight the importance of a healthy mind and body to it’s students. This provided the eager students with an opportunity to organise events, where they could fundraise for charity. Included in the many activities organised during the week, were a sponsored walk for the second year students from Swords to Malahide. Also included was a ‘Walk in my Shoes day’, where students wore odd or mismatched shoes to school and donated money to charity. The students collected €860, which was donated to two charities associated with Mental Health, namely Aware and Pieta House. These particular charities were chosen, because they provide a great service for people suffering from depression and mental health issues. A cheque handover ceremony was held at the school on Wednesday last, 28th May, where equal cheques of €430 were presented to the two charities.

Summer is the season brides wait for to have the best day of their lives, their wedding day. However, before they can becoming beautiful, blushing brides, there’s an incredible

amount that needs to be organised. So, we’re here to hopefully relieve you of some stress, with our tips and ideas on how to make your big day, perfect for you.

Spring is over, and we can now bring back the bold and bright colours we love so much. However, not to be mistaken for splashing contrasting bold colours everywhere, we suggest picking one strong colour as a statement piece, possibly a fuchsia or orange floral centrepiece on a plain white table.

Are you celebrating your 25th, 40th, 50th or 60th wedding anniversary in 2014? There will be a mass in the church in Lusk in September, to help you and your family to mark the occasion followed by refreshments in the Parish Hall. If you wish to be included in these celebrations, please give your details to Siobhán Murphy, Parish Pastoral Council.

Friends of Autism and ADHD are offering their support to parents and carers of young people with a history of self harm or suicide attempts. If you are in the Balbriggan and Skerries area and you would benefit from attending or getting involved in a peer support group of this kind, please call 018020484.

Boxing Club Training In Swords The locally based, Fingal Boxing Club is offering training on Thursdays from 7pm until 8pm at River Valley Community Centre, Swords. If you are interested in joining, contact the club.

Every wedding needs a theme. This summer’s all about glitz and glam. Subtle touches of glitter and rhinestones scream

summer and shine. Perhaps the black tie may be the one which reflects you. If you’re looking for something slightly different, try adding a relaxed boho twist, with lace, floral, and colour, yet still maintaining that elegance,

A recent trend we’ve noticed this summer, is the fading colour ombré look down the aisle. This could even be incorporated with the colour scheme for your wedding. If you have your sights set on a more industrial venue, you can line

Wedding Cake Cake tasting sessions are a wonderful way to make sure you have the perfect cake. You want to treat your guests to a cake which reflects yourself and the groom, so be sure to let the baker know which flavours you are keen on, when you book the session. We’d hate for you to enjoy a full day eating cake, only to go home and forget what they all taste like, with still no decision on cake! So take along a notebook commenting on each cake, and even take some photos.

Wedding Dress Trends The answer to a question many brides ask, yes, lace is still in trend and won’t be going anywhere for a while. Inspired by Kate Middleton’s beautiful gown, covered shoulders from cap to length are still one of the biggest bridal trends. As the summer’s here,

Swords Students Win Mathletes National Title The students of Fingal Community College, Swords were crowned the Mathletes National Champions, at the final of the competition on Saturday, 22nd May last. This innovative project is the brainchild of Sean O’Sullivan, formerly of Dragons’ Den fame. and the event is supported by the Department of Education and Skills

and Education Centres across the country. A proud principal of Fingal Community College, Sharon McGrath told the County Leader, “It is an innovative way to engage students in the learning of maths and was enthusiastically supported by our maths teachers - one of whom was invited to appear on RTE’s morning TV show Morning Edition, where Ciara Chaney spoke to the host, Keelin Shanley. When we won a previous heat, TV3 came to the school and subsequently broadcast a piece on our achievement on TV3. I’m extraordinarily proud of what the students have achieved. What a great way to finish a really successful year in Fingal Community College,” she enthused.

a series of trials. Ciara is clearly very passionate about the game, and she devotes a lot of time to honing her skills, which culminated to her receiving this award. Her achievement has been widely welcomed by all, especially her proud family, as well as her teachers at Loreto College and by everyone at Ciara Buchanan St Finian’s GAA Club. No doubt we will be hearing more about this gifted young lady in the years to come.

Skerries Club Seeks To Strengthen Skerries senior rugby team has been promoted to division 2A. With this in mind, the Skerries club would like to invite any players interested in playing at a higher level to contact them. They would also be very interested to hear from players that might be interested in playing dual status - this would mean that the player can stay and play with their own junior club and still play league matches with Skerries. If you feel you would like to give it a go, you can contact the club. They are also hoping to have an Open Day in August with some trial matches and a barbecue. A weight training programme with injury prevention in mind has already begun with Eamon Harford in the clubhouse, and this programme will run every Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm and Saturday at noon. The local club also delighted to announce that Johnny Tyndal has also agreed to join the coaching team as a specialist fitness trainer.

Speaking to the County Leader, Caroline Dunne, Group Leader of the Dublin group, said: “I am overwhelmed by the support from local people and businesses to our appeal as well as having a great evening’s entertainment with friends and family. At a time of great controversy in relation to monies being mismanaged in the charitable sector, I am glad to inform readers that every single cent raised will go towards our much needed cause,” she said.

fine. The aim is to encourage the public to dispose of their used gum responsibly. Speaking at the launch, the Mayor said, “It’s wonderful to see that community involvement is still alive and well in the North County, as well as in towns right across the country. The campaign brings together the general public, with industry and local authorities to reduce litter and show pride in their towns

by working together.” GLT Chairman, Paul Kelly told the County Leader: “This campaign set out to change consumer behaviour and the results speak for themselves. There has been demonstrable proof that educating people about the responsible disposal of gum, has a profound impact on attitudes and behaviour. We are committed to continuing to educate consumers to ensure that there is a culture which makes littering unacceptable,” he said

This year there is a new starting point and a new route. It will start at Balbriggan F.C club grounds, just under the bridge at Bath Road. Registration begins at 12.30pm and the walk starts at 1.15pm The walk will be started by Eamonn Doyle, head of LM FM Radio with his Boxer dog. The walk will be started live on air and the Outside Broadcast Unit will be broadcasting live from Balbriggan F.C club grounds. The walk will come up Bath Road and go along the town up to the Square, around by Church Street and back along the sea front to the club house. It will take about 45 minutes to complete. It is expected that some local pet shops, local kennels and local dog groomers, will appear on the day, displaying their wares. Registration is €5, or €10 for family. It is hoped to have teas and coffees for humans, and water at two points along the route for the dogs.

Commission President Yet To Be Decided By Cathal Boland With the election over, the power trading begins, and so it is in every assembly where there is no clear majority. The Lisbon Treaty provides that the Council of EU Prime Ministers, taking account of the results, nominates the President of the Commission to parliament, whose vote is required to ratify the nominee. Jean-Claude Junker, as the lead candidate for the EPP, has the support of that group’s members, but their number is 213 of 766 MEPS, far short of the majority required. He is attempting to garner a majority to support his appointment. This will be difficult without the votes of the S+D, the centre left group, whose candidate in the election was Martin Schulz, current President of the Parliament. Junker, while having first cut at putting a

majority together, has a major problem with the Swedish, Dutch, Hungarian and UK Prime Ministers opposing his nomination, while Ms Merkel does not appear bullish in support of him. A compromise candidate may emerge, such as Michael Barnier who is also a member of the EPP and who Junker defeated for the EPP nomination. Barnier, who is French, would prove far more acceptable to both London and Paris. Mr Junker may have a consolation prize available for him within the Commission, or as President of the Council. The Swedish PM has invited Cameron, Merkel and the Dutch PM to discuss the future of the EU. The German Finance minister responding to the election results says “We need a more intelligent Union, not the mindless pursuit of more Europe.” A satirical German Die Partei won a single seat in the election. They intend to rotate their MEP every month and say that their objective is to transfer as much money from Brussels to their party as possible. Winning the seat was a surprise to commentators and Die Partei. They may give us all a good laugh over the coming term.

James Sweeney, Portmarnock No, not really. I’ve just voted for Labour. I think it’s good they’re not becoming the new workers party, just to be more naturalistic.

John Hayden, Swords

Margaret Murphy, Swords Definitely, and I think that’s a good thing. Because we need something different to shake them up. The government are stuck, they do what they want to do, and we need someone to change that and come down to our level. It seems everything is taken off the people on the ground and people at the top are getting away with murder. So that’s why I think Sinn Fein, or any others, would be a lot better than who we have now.

Ross O’Brien, Swords Probably yeah. I think change is definitely a good thing. This country definitely needs change and even if Sinn Fein have bad history, I think everybody deserves a chance.

Kelly Harris, Balbriggan No I don’t think Sinn Fein should be in it at all to be honest with you. They are a bunch of hypocrites and liars. If anybody should be in, it’s the independents, because they’re actually doing what they’re supposed to.

Derek Shevton, Swords No I don’t think a workers party. None of them can really keep up with their promises.

Peggy O’Neill, Swords

Roseann Gregan, Swords

Wlliam Long, Swords No, not really. They’ve had a lot of criticism over the years. The people here in the south didn’t really recognise them, because they were causing a lot of trouble. Now they’ve had their breakthrough, which is really good, I heard today they’re trying to get medical cards for disabled children, which was refused by the last government. It’s good, because they’re keeping the other parties under a lot of pressure. So Sinn Fein will be good.
