Great Hopes For Local Girl Local girl Fi Rooney from Balrothery took on an exciting new challenge last weekend. Rooney is an Aerialist, Artist and Circus Performer, and decided to take on a new challenge by participating in the 2015 Miss Burlesque Ireland competition. By Jennifer McShane

After completing her final year degree show in the National College of Art and Design, Fi (Stage name Fifi) decided to compete in Miss Burlesque Ireland. After picking up a hula hoop at a music festival during 2012, Fifi was introduced to the world of Circus, Burlesque and the Cabaret scene. Realising that there was nowhere to train around Balrothery, she branched out and began training in the art of Aerial Acrobatics through PaperDolls, a collaborative aerial performance company, and pole dancing. Here she underwent serious conditioning and training, perfecting her skills and understanding of performance. In 2013, only a year after beginning her journey, Fifi was presented the opportunity to travel across America with a traditional circus, The Kelly Miller Circus. “This was perhaps one of my biggest challenges,” she explained. At the time, I was only used to performing small cabarets and friends shows that were put on throughout Dublin and Drogheda. I had to travel across the world on my own and slip right into the middle of the Circus’s tour and there was some serious time tables I had to get used to, fast. We would wake up at 5/6 am every morning, find the truck I was travelling in that day and

There were fabulous scenes in Swords over the weekend as thousands turned out for Swords Summer Festival 2015, the main street and castle area were transformed with a carnival atmosphere where people listened to excellent live music and entertainment. Swords Pals Off To Special Olympics Two young Swords lads are in the process of departing to Los Angeles to compete in the Special Olympics there later this month.

By Patrick Finnegan While this is a great distinction for the boys, the fact that both of them come from the same estate, Hawthorn Park in Swords is truly remarkable. Emmet Daly (19) and Billy Kane (15) are keen as mustard to get to Los Angeles and don the green jersey and represent their country with pride. Emmet is a key member of the 5-a-side football team, where he is expected to make a big impact. He told the County Leader that his idol is Republic of Ireland star, Pictured are Special Olympics athletes, Billy Kane and Emmet Daly outside Billy's home in Hawthorne Park in Robbie Keane. After returning from her journey in late September 2013, the Balrothery local was full of energy. Realising what was needed to become a successful performer in Ireland, Fifi threw herself at any opportunity that arose and in 2014 travelled to Milan, Italy to train for five months along with studying in the Brera Academy of Fine Art. She explained a little about her unusual and exciting hobbies, which she hopes will continue into a full-time career. “I have always been intrigued by the cabaret and circus scene, looking at how it affects communities as well as promoting positive mental health. Realising that there is not yet any circus programmes in the North County, I branched out and started to look around the country for places I could train, with the hope that I will some day come back and set up an outreach programme for children in Balbriggan,” she told the County Leader. This year, she put herself up for a new challenge, Miss Burlesque Ireland. The competition originated in Australia five years ago and creates a large international platform for contestants to perform. As one of the eleven finalists in this year’s competition she debuted three brand new acts, all of which were created in her home in Balrothery.

European Commission Clears Aer Lingus Takeover As part of a deal with the European Commission to secure clearance for its €1.36bn takeover of Aer Lingus, IAG will relinquish takeoff and landing slots at Gatwick airport. Aer Lingus and the DAA all welcomed the EC decision to sanction the takeover. The Commission approved the Aer Lingus acquisition after IAG made two pledges that Brussels said will ensure continued airline competition between Ireland and London. IAG will hand over five daily takeoff and landing slots at Gatwick, which can then be used by competitors to operate routes from both Dublin and Belfast to the London airport. Two of the slots must be operated between Dublin and Gatwick, and one between Belfast and Gatwick. The two remaining slots can be used to serve either

Dublin or Belfast. IAG has also promised that Aer Lingus will continue to carry connecting passengers to long-haul flights operated by competing airlines out of Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Amsterdam, Shannon and Dublin. Passengers will continue to have a choice to use other airlines than IAG when connecting at these airports, for instance on Heathrow-New York, Gatwick-Las Vegas, Amsterdam- Singapore, Shannon-Chicago, and Dublin-Chicago routes, according to the Commission. Transport Minister, Paschal Donohoe said his officials will assess the Commission’s decision to ensure that conditions have been met to enable the Government to formally accept IAG’s takeover offer.

We are looking forward to commencing construction once the planning cycle is finalised and creating a positive new retail store for people in Portmarnock and the surrounding areas. However, the news of this proposed development hasn’t gone down well with local residents, who recently called a protest meeting to strongly object to a retail unit in the town, which they feel would be “highly inappropriate.”

Planning Lodged For Portmarnock Site Following our recent story in the County Leader, Irish development and investment group, Ardale Property, have officially lodged a planning application with the County Council to develop a prominent site, thought to be the Lidl site on Strand Road in Portmarnock. The overall scheme will have a total gross value in excess of €12million. The site, formerly the Tin Church, is located on a high profile corner position within the village, at the junction between the Strand Road and St. Laurence O’Toole’s Avenue. The total size of the site is 0.93 acres. The proposed development comprises a convenience retail store, which would include an off licence area, and is over 2,000 square metres. The development is two storeys with the retail store located on the first floor and will have undercroft parking at ground level to facilitate 75 vehicles. It is expected that the finished project will create in excess of 40 jobs for the area, in addition to those jobs created during construction. Alan Hegarty, Director of Ardale Property Group, said; “This is an extremely exciting project for the area of Portmarnock that will bring not only jobs but a unique retail offering to the area. New Vision For Tourism In North County

American visitors, Margaret Corbin and her husband, Patrick McFarlane are pictured at the launch of the Fingal Tourism Strategy at Swords Castle, with County Mayor, Cllr David O'Connor and former Mayor, Cathal Boland (right)

American Visitors Charmed By North County Hospitality The hospitality and friendship of the people of Swords was well and truly encapsulated at the launch of the Fingal Tourism Strategy last week. American visitors, Margaret Corbin and her husband, Patrick McFarlane were visiting the town on their way to Dublin Airport, when they experienced North County hospitality at its finest. Margaret, who is Vice-President of Programmes at the United Nations Association of Rochester, New York told the County Leader about their experience. “It was our last night in Ireland and we decided to stay in a town near the airport and not go on to the airport property, so we selected the Carnegie Court Hotel, which is beautiful in every way.” “We chose Swords and we were so glad. We wanted to see the castle and were so kindly included by one of the council members, whom we met on the

street outside the castle gate. He then added our name to the guest list and we were pleased to go into the chapel and hear the history, see the grounds, hear the music of the pipes, and be invited to join in the reception,” said Margaret. “At the reception, we met other council members and heard more about the success of Swords and the castle reconstruction. It was an honour for my husband, Patrick McFarlane, as this was his first trip to Ireland in search of his grandfather’s homestead in County Kerry. We were successful in our search in the town of Sneem and we were on our way home again to New York.” Margaret concluded by saying, “The true Irish hospitality was shown to us not only in Sneem, but also, especially in Swords. Thank you for making this visit so important and unique for my husband and myself.”

The County Council has committed to investing over €18m in new and existing tourism facilities as part of a strategy to develop tourism in the North County. The new Fingal Tourism Strategy, ‘Destination Fingal’, which was launched last Tuesday by Tourism Minister Paschal Donohoe at a lavish event at Swords Castle, sets out a vision for tourism in the county and plots the actions necessary to develop the sector. Among the projects which the County Council have committed to invest in are: the East Coast Greenway - a signed tourism route from Howth to Balbriggan; the Swords Cultural Quarter; and re-development of various heritage properties in the county. Among the areas which the strategy identifies as offering opportunities are Heritage Tourism, Activity and Sports Based Tourism, Food Tourism, Retail, Conference and Business Tourism. It is understood that the €18m investment by the County Council will help lever additional funds by the private sector. At the prestigious event

in Swords Castle, which is a key element of the new strategy, County Mayor, Cllr. David O’Connor spoke of his pride in seeing Swords Castle open to the public again after many years of closure. He thought it was particularly appropriate that Swords Castle was hosting the launch of the county’s new tourism strategy given that the castle has the potential to play a key role in attracting new visitors to Swords and the North County. Putting tourism in context in the county, the Mayor underlined that: “The strategy estimates that visitors to Fingal currently contribute €500m a year to the local economy and sustain 20,000 jobs - one in four of our jobs in the county. There are currently about 800 tourism businesses in the county. This shows the importance of this indigenous sector. Our goal is to ensure the continuing success of the attractions we have and to support the development of new opportunities and new markets,” he said. Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said that Fingal will

be working hard in the coming months to ensure that the county gains maximum leverage from the Grow Dublin Tourism Alliance, established under Failte Ireland. “We will be working with all relevant agencies and with the tourism industry to promote the North

County, develop new and better marketing campaigns to attract new visitors to the county.” Welcoming the launch of the strategy, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD said: “I commend the County Council for leading the way in developing this local tourism

strategy, which will help deliver on national policy objectives. I would urge continued close collaboration with Fáilte Ireland and other key partners in delivery so that the development of tourism in the North County can be fully integrated with the forthcoming brand experience for Dublin.”

E-Heath For All By Cathal Boland The digital era is set to revolutionise how health care is managed and delivered, a conference organised by Phillips was told recently. With the application of the advances in communication and the ongoing development of new programmes to run on smart phones etc. will shortly see us all carry around our own medical minder with us. To make the most of these advances in data technologies, a common sharing platform must be adopted. The European Commission wants to promote unified standards and interoperability as part of a Digital Single Market. Standards, such as these lock into the “good” concepts of TTIP and common standards should be adopted worldwide. Currently, clinical care information is not shared electronically within

most countries and certainly not across borders. This information, if gathered together, will provide a national, European and global picture of world health. Such sharing will allow for the better delivery of e-health and e-care solutions and the development of products and services to meet the emerging needs of communities. The European Commission’s Deputy Director-General for Communications Networks, Content & Technology said: “We have decided to try in the next year-and-a-half to remove the obstacles that exist for businesses to flourish, including e-health,” Data technology is developing fast its full potential has yet to be realised. The opportunities it present must be embraced. Strong protections for personal privacy must be established and defended. But we must also encourage that the boundaries to the application of these great advances be challenged to the limit to ensure that the maximum benefit is realised for each of us.

People in Swords and further afield are about to experience a whole new dining experience, which will bring them back to some fond holiday memories. Cafe Debran is a newly opened restaurant on Main Street, Swords, which specialises in Mediterranean cuisine, and is the only one north of the Liffey, specialising in this genre of cuisine. According to most food experts, this is the healthiest food you can eat. By opening Cafe Debran here in Swords, the only one of its kind in the North County, proprietor Rijo Joseph is certain that this was the best way to do something different for diners in Swords. He said, “The town has lots of different restaurants specialising in Italian, Chinese, Thai, Indian, and I feel that the only choice missing was that of the Mediterranean way of cooking in a healthy manner of

grilling and barbecuing. We are expecting that Mediterranean food will be very popular with the people of Swords and all over the North County,” he said. “We decided to choose Swords as the ideal location for the new restaurant because the potential here is exceptional. It is close to the airport , with tourists passing by. The population here is growing and people working in businesses love to eat in the restaurant.” President of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Siobhan Kinsella, in welcoming Rijo and his team to Swords said, “The opening of this Mediterranean style restaurant will greatly increase the choice for local people and visitors wanting to enjoy great food in Swords. Attendance Figures Spike At ‘Flavours’ Show Following the success of the last month’s Flavours of Fingal County Show, the County Council has set itself the objective of establishing the County Show as one of Ireland’s largest family friendly food and farm events. Over the coming weeks, the Council will be pursuing plans to further grow the event in 2016. Such is the growing success of the show, figures of those visiting the event this year more than doubled to 60,000. The response to the organisation of the event has been overwhelmingly positive. The County Council is aware that there is a real appetite to build on this success and is now striving to develop the event so it becomes a major

national showcase of the locality’s food credentials. Since its establishment four years ago, “Flavours” has become a must-attend family event and is credited for showcasing the best of Irish food from the North County area and beyond. When announcing plans for the 2016 event, a thrilled Chief Executive of the County Council, Paul Reid said: “So many people told me over the weekend how much they enjoyed the Show and look forward to attending every year. We look forward to working with existing and new partners in 2016 to increase the success of this event and place it on the national stage,” he added.

There is a new project underway in the North County to promote and encourage the Irish language. There are four Gaelscoileanna, a Gaelcoláiste and now, six Café Craiceáilte (Irish Conversation) groups. The conversation groups meet every week in cafés, usually in the mornings in Skerries, Balbriggan, Swords, Malahide, Howth and Donabate. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and there is no charge but a commitment to speak Gaeilge. If you wish to find out more information on the conversation groups, call 0861755343. The standard of Irish varies from average to fluent speakers. “Some people come because they enjoy the language itself. Others are studying for exams and need the practice for the oral Irish test, which now makes up 40 percent of the Leaving Certificate examination,” explained one of the conversation group founders, Diarmuid ó Súilleabháin. “Parents who have children going to a primary school , especially those attending a Gaelscoil and want help with homework also turn up.” “The project has been very successful so far,” he continued. “Often customers in the cafe join the conversation. At the start of this year, the County Council appointed an Irish Language official who participates regularly at the sessions. The next step is to strengthen the link with nearby Gaelscoileanna,” he said.

Skerries RNLI Says Thanks For Generous Donation Skerries RNLI thanked Tesco Distribution Centre (based in Donabate), for their generous donation of €213. The money was donated as part of the Tesco community funding initiative. Throughout the year the employees of the distribution centre nominate local community groups to participate in the scheme. They then vote over a number of weeks for each of the nominated charities and the available funds are distributed to the charities based on the outcome. Speaking about the donation, Gerry Canning, Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer said: “This is a great initiative by Tesco to enable their employees to get involved in their communities and support local

causes. The Tesco Distribution Centre in Donabate are great supporters of our station and it is very much appreciated.” The RNLI remain very busy this summer season and are currently preparing for their next annual raft race. The raft race, in aid of Skerries RNLI, which has been growing in popularity since its return three years ago, will take place on Sunday 2nd August. The raft race is a great day out for all the family and the fundraising committee is hard at work to ensure the event is an even bigger success this year. The venue will, as always, be the south strand in Skerries. The minimum fee will be €50 per raft and sponsorship forms are available. Each raft must be crewed by four to six people and life jackets are mandatory for the event. Mechanical propulsion systems are not allowed and the entry must be a raft. Any sort of Surfboards, boats, carved foam etc. will be disqualified.

TanOrganic donates vital Skin Scanners to Marie Keating Foundation TanOrganic, the world’s first and only Eco-Certified selftanning brand, is proud to announce its support of the Marie Keating Foundation, with a donation of five skin scanners to the charity. These scanners are crucial in detecting unseen skin damage and highlighting the damaging effect overexposure to UV rays from the sun and sunbeds can have on the skin. Besides causing premature ageing, these damaging UV rays can lead to skin cancer. Using the skin scanners will help the Marie Keating nurses highlight the need to use a high factor SPF and stay out of the sun. At the review appointment, discussions relating to their ongoing care pathway are held between the patient and their consultant,” said the spokesperson. “If clinically appropriate, patients are referred back to their referring consultant nephrologist. Marie died in 1998, aged just 51, of a type of breast cancer called Paget’s Disease, which is usually curable. However, as Marie didn’t know enough about cancer and the

importance of early detection, she was treated too late. The skin scanners, donated by TanOrganic, will be used in these mobile units to offer the further service of checking skin for any signs of sun damage. Costing around €1,000 each, the donation of equipment will make an incredible difference to the charity enabling them to continue the amazing work they do across Ireland. Singer Ronan Keating said: “Myself and the whole Marie Keating Foundation team are really grateful to TanOrganic for donating the skin scanners. One of the main things that we learnt since losing our mam to cancer is that we all need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of cancer and the importance of cancer prevention.”

Appeal By Local Sheep Farmer At most times of year, attacks by dogs on sheep and lambs can have a devastating effect on farmers and their livelihoods. Recently, a sheep farmer in County Cork suffered the sickening loss of 30 ewes and lambs of his pedigree Zwartbles sheep, due to dog attacks.

By Patrick Finnegan The County Leader set about finding out if this is a problem for farmers in the North County. Our reporter met up with local farmer, Padraic McMahon, who has a large farm of sheep and lambs at Fieldstown near Rolestown. He spoke frankly about the dangers sheep farmers face from killer dogs on a regular basis. He said, “This is a constant problem in North County Dublin, due to us being so near to urban areas. Of all the problems we have with lambing and other things within our control, dogs are the biggest stress we face as sheep owners. In one afternoon or night, a few dogs can wipe out your flock. There was an attack in Oldtown last Spring, where sheep were killed two nights in a row and this is something that is always on our minds. When asked what can be done to combat this scourge, Padraic said that awareness of people was crucial. “The problem is the people who are responsible dogs owners are going to be responsible, simply because irresponsible dog owners

The meeting comes at the end of a major programme of citizen engagement, which saw 81 workshops held nationwide to stimulate discussions and ideas on how local communities should commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising next year. Speaking at the meeting Minister Humphreys said: “I am so encouraged by the level of excitement and engagement in the North County. Local people are really interested in getting involved in Ireland 2016, and communities right across the country have been full of great ideas about how the centenary of the Easter Rising can be commemorated at a local level. Old Borough In Swords Opens To Great Fanfare

The opening of the new Wetherspoon pub (formerly the Old Boro) on Tuesday, 21st July is set to have a profound effect on the hospitality sector in Swords. The Old Borough is now the fourth Wetherspoon pub to be opened in Ireland, with the other three located in Dun Laoghaire, Blackrock and Blanchardstown. The building dates from 1804 when it was a school and is situated in a prime location in the town. The newest addition to Swords pubs is all in the hands of Bar manager, Dan Foster, a 28 year-old Londoner, who has served as a pub manager with Wetherspoons for the past four years in the UK. Dan spoke to the County Leader about the excitement surrounding the opening of Wetherspoons. “It’s been a long time coming and the important thing is that it will bring a venue which will cater for everyone from 18 right up to 80 years of age. It’s a very varied venue, full of bars including some every good locally sourced Irish products. All of our steaks are local and it will bring extra competition into the hospitality sector in Swords, with excellent value for money across the board,” he said. Dan is committed to a future in Swords, having just bought a house in the Mountgorry area of the town. “This is the biggest pub I’ve ever managed and I view this as a long time appointment,” he said. The new pub has undergone massive renovation to the tune of €2.8 million. It will

employ a total of 85 people, many of whom are local people. It also has the largest beer garden and outdoor dining space in Swords. The pub has a family friendly policy and it is a place where families can enjoy themselves with their children and as Dan explained, there is something for everyone here. “There are not many options at present for breakfasts in Swords, so we will be open from 8am each morning, where people going to work can avail of our very competitively priced breakfasts,” he said. Swords was chosen as the venue for the new pub due to its ideal location, which Dan said is very important to the company. “Swords is a very big pie, if you like where every business can do well and we can add to that by bringing more people to the town centre and all businesses can benefit,” he said. CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Tony Lambert congratulated Dan and the team on the new venture. He said, “Having completely revamped the “Old Borough”, Wetherspoon are opening this pub right in the centre of Swords, creating a wonderful new place to eat and drink. With breakfast being served from 8 a.m. and last orders at 11 p.m. each evening there is a great choice of dishes on the menu. Manager, Dan Foster and his staff are on hand to ensure their customers have a great experience,” he said.

Local Rise In House Prices

Edel Crowley and Chris Platt

With the new Central Bank rules on mortgages beginning to bite, the price of an average three bedroom semi detached house in North County Dublin has risen by 1.01 per cent to €250,000 in the second quarter of 2015. This is according to a national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance. This makes the North County the only area in Dublin where prices are increasing. The price of houses in Dublin city and across the southside of the city are falling. The REA Average House Price Index concentrates

on the sale price of Ireland’s typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide. According to John Cumisky of REA Cumisky in Balbriggan, the number of enquiries for three beds has decreased this quarter and the market has softened for properties valued at over €200,000. There has been a drop in the percentage of cash buyers in the market, with 75 per cent of properties in North County Dublin now being financed by mortgages.

However, the price of an average three-bed semi in Dublin city has fallen by over €19,000 in the past three months. The price of an average three-bed semi in Dublin city has fallen by -5.02 per cent from €381,667 to €362,500 since the end of March, as the new rules on mortgage lending begin to take effect on the market. The new rules on mortgage lending for houses above €220,000 have contributed to an already apparent softening in the Dublin market, according to REA. Some areas in the higher end of the south Dublin city market have seen selling prices fall by up to €35,000 (or -7 per cent) since Q1.

Ryanair will launch flights to Israel in November, marking a significant expansion of its geographic footprint. The flights to Israel will operate from Budapest, Krakow and Kaunus to Eilat Ovda Airport, which is about 300 km south of Jerusalem, and close to the borders of both Jordan and Egypt. An open skies deal signed by Israel and the EU in 2013 paved the way for the airline to establish operations in Israel. It means that Ryanair will now serve three continents –

Alternatively, some couples might choose to get the less expensive, more affordable wedding invitations. This way, they can have more money to spend on the wedding decorations!

Wedding Party And Guest Attire Today’s weddings are becoming more and more colourful. You are free to let your imagina-

Wedding Themes

Just like with wedding favours, there are a number of summer wedding decorations out there. Try purchasing decorations that are pastel blue, pink or lavender. You could also put seasonal flowers up as centrepieces at the reception tables. Instead of having wedding guests throw rice or bird seed, you could have them throw rose petals. When it comes to having a summer themed wedding, you are only limited by your imagination!

Every wedding needs a theme. This summer’s all about glitz and glam. Subtle touches of glitter and rhinestones scream summer and shine. Perhaps the black tie may be the one which reflects you. If you’re looking for something slightly different, try adding a relaxed bohemian twist, with lace, floral, and colour, yet still maintaining that elegance,

The Wedding Dress Part of the reason why summer weddings are so popular is because of the wonderful weather! Of course this depends on where you live, but generally speaking you expect good weather on the day. Because the temperatures are typically not too hot, there are a lot of options for the wedding dress. It is best to choose a more versatile dress that can suit you. Weddings at this time of year also allow room for adding an elegant touch of colour to the wedding dress. Today, many brides choose to have a sash or embroidery of a different colour on their dresses. There are certainly quite a few unique and stylish colours to choose from. There are plenty of excellent wedding outfitters here in the North County for you to choose from.

We have the likes of Malahide Castle, Newbridge Demesne, Ardgillan Park, to name but a few, which provide the opportunity to get away from it all. Take a picnic with you and

of a barbecue wafting through the air. There are many excellent butchers in the North County, who can provide you with the finest meat

for you and your friends to enjoy. They will also have special deals at this time of year, so it pays off to keep a sharp eye out for these deals. With good weather at this time of year, we can plan days out and visits to some of our excellent amenities here in the North County. Luckily we

are blessed with some of the finest beaches anywhere, some of which have Blue Flag status. Another coastal activity which is very

appealing is sea angling, with areas like Balbriggan, Loughshinny, Rush, Donabate, Malahide and Portmarnock to the fore here. Always remember to be extra cautious when family members, particularly children are near water. Activities like horse riding are always popular, especially

with children and if the weather is bad, a visit to your local leisure centre is always very appealing. Here the entire family can enjoy the swimming pool, gym, badminton and other sports, and have a nice meal afterwards as well. If you wish to spread your wings a little, a visit to Dublin city is well worthwhile. We have a very interesting capital city with lots of places to visit. For adults, a visit here is memorable, with many of the finest pubs and restaurants to enjoy. Sites such as Trinity College and the world famous Book of Kells are a real treat, as well as a visit to Jameson Distillery or Guinness are highly recommended. City Bus tours are highly recommended, where you can relax and enjoy an informative commentary. For children, Summer Camps are ideal for getting your little ones out and about and enjoying all the fun that the summer camps will have to offer. It is also an ideal way to make sure they keep fit, by keeping active. These camps cater

for most activities, from Gaelic football, hurling, rugby, soccer, tennis to arts and crafts and music. All the camps around the North County are a paradise for families with young children and most importantly, they’re safe and secure. This

is such a source of comfort for parents to know that their children are being cared for and entertained in a safe environment. With an excellent network of roads, there is now no excuse not to take the family off on a

fun-filled day. The North County has some really worthwhile parks and places to visit, including something for the entire family to enjoy. There are hidden gems dotted around the area, where children can enjoy fun activities.

charity’s national drowning prevention campaign, Respect the Water, is warning people – particularly adult men – to be aware of the dangers of the coastline, as well as the water itself. The two 60 second commercials will screen in Irish and UK cinemas over the next eight weeks. The second film called ‘Unpredictable’ is again shown from the perspective of a casualty, played by an actor and shows the unpredictability of the water and how quickly conditions can turn. Joe Moore, RNLI Coastal Safety Manager for Ireland, said: “We’re warning people around the locality and beyond that if they’re going near the water, whatever their activity, they could be at risk and they need to take care. A large number of incidents which happen each year involve people who never even intended to enter the water – slips and falls while walking or running are very common. RNLI Warns Locals To Respect The Water The RNLI recently launched its national drowning prevention campaign, Respect the Water, warning people that the coastlines and waters can be dangerously unpredictable. The campaign which will be run on radio, outdoor and online will also see two hard-hitting ads screened in Irish cinemas over the summer months, which show the effect of cold water shock on the body and the unpredictability of the water. Figures released by the charity show an average of 59 people die in Irish waters each year – more than the number of pedestrians and cyclists killed on Ireland’s roads. In 2014 alone, 55 people died by accidental drowning in Irish waterways. The number of near-misses is even higher – last year the RNLI’s lifeboat crews around the Republic of Ireland rescued 1,133 people and saved 36 lives. The RNLI is aiming to halve the number of coastal deaths by 2024 and the

Summer Travel Tips This month and August are set to be the busiest months ever at Dublin Airport. Here are some travel tips to help you on your journey through the airport in the coming weeks: Plan to arrive in the terminal building at least 90 minutes before your flight departure time for flights to the UK/Europe. Airlines recommend you arrive three hours in advance for long haul flights particularly when travelling to the US using US Pre Clearance facilities. waves or unstable ground can catch anyone out.” The charity is also warning people of the unpredictability of the water, including the dangers of cold water and rip currents. Summer air temperatures may be warm but the average sea temperature is just 12 degrees centigrade. Cold water shock, which causes uncontrollable gasping and numbs the limbs, can set in at any temperature below 15 degrees centigrade. “The water might look inviting, but it can be dangerously unpredictable, with hazards which can be fatal if not respected. Cold water is a major risk for anyone who ends up in the water – intentionally or otherwise. The body’s reaction to sudden immersion in cold water will trigger uncontrollable gasping, which can draw water into the lungs and lead to drowning. The coldness will also gradually shut down the use of limbs, making it very difficult even for strong swimmers to stay

As the awaited summer season is here, you may be in the mood for some major reconstruction, or possibly just want to make the house more summer friendly. Whatever you’re thinking of, County Leader have gathered some tips to hopefully inspire you to get started. It is possible to change the look of your home, on the outside and inside, on just a small budget. Businesses in the North County have some great summer offers to give you the

best bargain, and achieve your summer home on a small budget. As the summer’s here, there’s no longer a need for drab colours and heavy materials. Here is a season where your surroundings should be light and breezy to reflect the summer. A popular tip is to replace those heavy winter curtains for lighter, thinner ones. Embrace the sun, it’s not everyday we have it. In fact, we most probably spend a third of the year in the

dark and cold, a little morning sunshine and late nights can’t harm us. Summer’s all about the light colours, and allowing more light into the house will bring summer indoors too. Not only this, but it will also make your rooms appear larger and more spacious. Appearing to have more space reflects the outdoor air and breeze, preparing you for the summer. A lick of paint can give your house a whole new, fresh look. Perhaps you just want

to add another coat to the current colour, or go for a new look and change it completely. Now that the summer’s here, it’s all about the light colours. Maybe a nice versatile colour for all seasons would suit, like pastel colours. For the bathroom, replace the bath mats and towels with lighter colours. A light scented candle always looks calming and relaxing when lit. Try a fresh scented one, similar to vanilla or sea breeze, these light scents always add to the tone.

Perhaps now is the time to try some new bathroom products. Now it’s summer, everything comes to

life, including scents, embrace this by opting for a different body wash, perhaps a scented one.

More Space Needed By CSO In Swords The office of Public Works (OPW) has engaged office agents, JLL and CBRE to source some extra space to the Central Statistics Office (CSO) at Swords Business Campus. The extra space is required by the Census section of CSO, to house approximately 200 TCOs (Temporary Clerical Officers) because of a census,

Your No.1 Local Newspaper

21 Years Serving The Community Of North County Dublin

which is due to be held next year. These jobs will be filled from within the civil service. A total of 1.8 million census forms will be needed and the the extra temporary clerical jobs are required to process these forms. The Census section is already located in a warehouse at Unit 4 in the Swords Business Park

and the plan is to rent Unit 4D in the campus, which extends to approximately 316 square metres. The deal consists of a 2.5 year lease with an agreed rent of €11 per square foot, with 20 car parking spaces. Agents JLL and CBRE have also let another unit within the campus.

Fixed Charges To Promote Safe Cycling Practices The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD, recently announced that he will be introducing Fixed Charge Notices for cyclists who commit certain road traffic offences. The fixed charge will be set at €40. It is the Minister’s intention to introduce regulations to give effect to this proposal by 31st July. Minister Donohoe said: “Following consultations with the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána, I have decided to extend the fixed charge notice system to cyclists for seven of the 36 existing road traffic offences. These include breaking a red light, failure to have a front lamp or rear lamp lit during lighting-up hours and cycling without reasonable consideration. This new measure is

intended to promote safe cycling practices and to discourage dangerous cycling.” “The introduction of fixed charge notices for motorists has been hugely successful in changing driver behaviour and I am confident that a similar change in behaviour and attitudes by cyclists who break the law will result following the introduction of this measure. While the majority of cyclists obey the rules of the road, unfortunately there are some who do not. As a committed cyclist myself, I am of the view that the introduction of fixed charge notices for cyclists will increase awareness among cyclists and reinforce the message that cyclists have a responsibility in relation to obeying road traffic law,” he concluded.
