He told the County Leader, “IAG will now give Aer Lingus connections and openings across the world that they would never have had without this brand. This is good news for the country and it’s excellent news for Aer Lingus. It will promote UK business in particular, due to the British Airways connection, which can only be good for tourism in North County Dublin, it being the first point of call for visitors to Dublin Airport,” he said. Speaking on the unanimous Ryanair vote to sell its share of Aer Lingus, paving the way for the airline to be acquired by IAG, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid said, ‘The clarity that this vote gives is a positive for Dublin Airport and for tourism and business in the

The most Important of these events and arguably one of the most important events of the year was the European Men’s Championships, which was held in Aalborg. Christopher’s bowling career is mostly selffinanced, so it is a huge challenge to keep the momentum up to retain his World Ranking but he adheres to a strict training regime mostly set by his coaches Fergal McLoughlin and British bowling legend, Brian Michael. Christopher who bowls out of ALSAA at Dublin Airport said, “Brian has made me the player I am today, after working with him over the last two years I could honestly say I would not even be close to the player I am without him. Brian has done so much for me both on and off the lanes, whether it was helping me with my physical game or my mental attitude.”

Minister Reilly, in welcoming the opening said, “This is a fabulous facility for the youth of Rush and I want to emphasise the need for more volunteers. I would encourage people to volunteer two -and-a-half hours per month, which would mean that we could open the facility for more hours and open new workshops, like antibullying. Volunteering is self perpetuating, with a knock-on effect, which would make a great difference to the young people who use this wonderful facility. The more I see of young people, the more confident I am that our future is in safe hands,” he said. See pictures on page 4

The Purple Flag area will cover Main Street, North Street, the Pavilions Shopping Centre and Airside Retail and Business Park. promoting a quality evening and nighttime economy offering to local, regional, national and international visitors. The 70-page report provides an assessment of Swords having regard to Wellbeing, Movement, Appeal and Place. Under Wellbeing, the application outlines the current performance of the Purple Flag area having regard to crime statistics, care, regulation, services, partnership and perceptions. Under Movement, the area was assessed for public transport, car parking, pedestrian and cycling routes, crowd management, information and partnership. Rush Scouts Get Ready For World Jamboree There was a great atmosphere in Rush last Thursday evening (9th of July) as County Mayor, Cllr David O’Connor and Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, James Reilly TD, attended the final meeting of the Rush 38th Scouts before they embark on their trip to the 2015 World Scout Jamboree in Japan. Chairperson of the Rush 38th Scouts, David Clarke welcomed the dignitaries to their scout den in Kenure Woods, which is the old gate lodge of the Kenure Estate. Speaking at the event Mr Clarke said, “We are delighted to see the Mayor and the Minister here this evening as we have had great support over the years from Fingal County Council and indeed from Minister Reilly himself. We are the longest established youth group in the area and I am glad to say we are receiving wonderful support from our public representatives who recognise the value of the youth development work being done by Scouting Ireland in the
towns throughout the North County.” The 2015 Jamboree in Japan is significant in that it will be held during the 70th anniversary of the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Scouting Ireland will be attending a number of commemorations in Hiroshima and Nagasaki to mark the anniversary and have designated two of their Leaders as Messengers of Peace one of whom is David Clarke from Rush. These Messengers of Peace will be meeting up with scouts from Palestine to create links with Scouting Ireland. Scouting Ireland will also be sponsoring scouts from Lesotho in Africa who otherwise would not have been in a position to attend the Jamboree. “The Messenger of Peace is a Global initiative brought about by the World Organisation of Scout Movement (WOSM). I am proud to have been chosen as a Messenger of Peace and will fly the Fingal flag in Japan,” Mr Clarke added.
and is assessed by location, diversity, clarity, animation, design and identity. “Collaboration is the keystone of the Purple Flag process and all partners have worked extremely hard to develop this complex document and we are all hopeful that our application will be successful. The assessment of the Swords Purple Flag application will include a visit from an external assessor on a weekend at the end of August and we are relying on the support of businesses and agencies in the Swords area to achieve this award”,” said Toni Hogan,” Purple Flag Co-Ordinator.

Another Adventure For Malahide Sea Scouts As sure as the Leaving Cert finishes the Annual Scout camping season gets under way and early out of the blocks this year were two of the Malahide Sea Scout Troop’s Neala Girls troop and The Talbot de Malahide Boys troop who camped together in the picturesque little village of Villierstown in Co Waterford. Nearby is the densely wooded Dromana Estate which gave a fabulous opportunity to practice the traditional scout skills of Backwoodsmanship and Bivouacking. The River Blackwater on the other hand provided an ideal setting for the scouts sailing and rowing boats as well as swimming. The scouts camped in a field courtesy of a local farmer and were

delighted with the welcome and hospitality shown by the entire community of the pretty village. The Annual Camp is a highlight of every scout troop’s year and is keenly looked forward to by scouts both young and old alike. The older scouts look upon it as a badge of honour as to how many annual camps they have been on and where. It is not unusual for some of the older scouts to have spent up to three months of their life under canvass in scouting when all of their camps are taken together. The Malahide Wednesday troop will camp later this month on the shores of Lough Derg near Portumna, however the highlight of this year’s camping season will be towards the end of July when

Skerries Woman Receives RNLI Honour The RNLI held its Annual Presentation of Awards at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin recently where the charity presented fifty-five awards to volunteers, groups and businesses from across the country. Seven of those awards were made to Dublin volunteers and groups, and on a local level, a woman in Skerries. Guest of honour at the ceremony was Leesa Harwood, RNLI Director of Community Lifesaving and Fundraising. Also present was David Delamer, Chairperson of the RNLI Council in Ireland who welcomed the volunteers and their supporters to the ceremony. The Séamus Ennis Arts Centre in Naul was the centre of attention last Saturday, when President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins visited the centre to officially open a new outdoor performance area, ‘Gairdín an Phíobaire (The Pipers Garden). The Séamus Ennis Centre is situated in the heart of the village of Naul and was established in 2001 to celebrate the life and music of the late piper and archivist Séamus Ennis. It also serves to promote and develop the arts at a local, regional and national level. As a result of an investment from the County Council, the centre has recently undergone a major redevelopment with the building of a new performance area and offices. The Pipers Garden (Gairdín an Phíobaire) was designed to offer new opportuni-
ties for musicians and artists to perform and showcase the artistic talent in the North County area and beyond. The event featured a speech from President Higgins and a performance from Liam Ó’Maonlaí and his all-star band, Ré. Guests on the day included County Mayor, Cllr David O’Connor, who welcomed the President to Naul, and local TD’s, councillors and the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid. The gathering also included representatives from the Art Council, Seamus Ennis Arts Centre (SEAC) patrons and friends. Later that evening Ré performed an outdoor show as part of the ‘SEAC Summer Season’, with special guest, Bernadette Morris. Sean Paul O’Hare, director of The Séamus Ennis Arts Centre said, “It

It’s not perfect or foolproof. We provide regular feedback to the Gardai in Balbriggan who have generally been very supportive and responsive,” he added. “If you see criminal or suspi-

Another coastal activity which is very appealing is sea angling, with areas like Balbriggan, Loughshinny, Rush, Donabate, Malahide and Portmarnock to the fore here. As we enjoy the long stretch in the summer evenings, there are
plenty of opportunities to quite literally have ‘fun in the sun’ for the whole family. It is advisable to shop around because there are excellent deals to be had, especially where families are concerned. With an excellent network of roads, there is now no
excuse not to take the family off on a fun-filled day. The North County has some really worthwhile parks and places to visit, including something for the entire family to enjoy. Take a picnic along and enjoy eating al fresco in one of our parks or
beaches, but remember to leave nothing but your footprint behind. If picnics are not to your liking, families can avail of some wonderful opportunities to sample some of the great meal deals that are available all across the North County and beyond.

Have A Gander At This GRAPE & GANDER is a new luxury Irish sportswear brand designed for women who want to work out in comfort and style. Co-founders Grace O’Rourke and Aoife Connolly from Dublin have created an exclusive three-piece collection featuring pants, sleeveless top and jacket. The collection will officially launch July 23rd 2015 and will be available via www.grapeandgander.com. Grace and Aoife designed their initial GRAPE & GANDER collection with Irish women in mind; each piece accentuating the natural curve of the female figure. The block panelling on the sleeveless top (€45.00) and jacket (€95.00) slims and flatters the silhouette, while the high wasted nature of the pants (€75.00) was created to hug and hold the waist. This is a collection for ultimate confidence and comfort. Each piece in the collection is side seam free. The designs sculpt the female figure and the seamless sides create a streamline effect, allowing fluid movement and eliminating friction during exercise. The fabric seams have been moved to the most flattering areas of the body, creating a slimmer silhouette. Suitable for the gym, Pilates, yoga or simply stylish loungewear, these items will be a fantastic, long lasting wardrobe addition.
Judge Dismisses Aer Lingus Stolen Ring Case A court in the US has dismissed a lawsuit taken against Aer Lingus by Dutch floral designer, Sade Coppens. She was suing Aer Lingus alleging her engagement ring and over valuables were stolen from her luggage. Aer Lingus has won its court battle with the Dutch woman, who sued the airline for $1 million after her engagement ring and other valuables were allegedly stolen from her luggage.
She had sued Aer Lingus for “emotional trauma and distress” after a bag went missing following a transatlantic flight from New York to Amsterdam via Dublin last summer. Lawyers for Aer Lingus had sought to have the case thrown out on the basis Ms Coppens had already accepted a cheque for $1,682 (€1,513) as “full and final settlement”, which is the maximum
O’Brien Blasts Varadkar Over Transplant Programme Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF) has demanded an emergency debate with the Health Minister in the Seanad, amid fears that patients in need of pancreas transplants are dying. This follows the suspension of the only pancreas transplant programme in the country. The programme operating of Beaumont Hospital, was shut down following the retirement of respected surgeon, David Hickey. Mr Hickey has now raised fears that the failure to fill his post will result in the death of patients waiting for transplants. O’Brien, has called a vote for an emergency debate with the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar, having accused the Minister of hiding on the issue. “There are currently 10 patients waiting for pancreas transplants in Ireland. These people have been denied access to lifesaving surgery for months now,” said O’Brien. “The HSE’s failure to fill this key consultant post since January has resulted in the suspension of the entire pancreas transplant programme in Ireland. Patients awaiting transplants are now being denied access to transplant co-ordinators. If they have any medical issues whatsoever, they are being forced to present at the chaotic Emergency Department. Post-operative patients who are

She also found that claims originating from the sentimental value of lost property and the disruption of a family holiday were not actionable under the convention. Although the value of items allegedly stolen was around €24,000, Ms Coppens claimed some of them were “priceless” and “irreplaceable”. The lost items included the engagement ring, photographic equipment and SD cards with images of her children.
extremely susceptible to infection are also being forced to go through the Emergency Department for their medical care. This is a completely unacceptable, dangerous and frankly unacceptable situation,” O’Brien said. “I have raised this issue twice last week, but we still have no answers. Has the Health Minister Leo Varadkar and the HSE just written off these patients? Why is it that no value is being placed on their lives and their medical care? We need answers from the Minister about why it is taking so long to fill this post, why the entire programme has been suspended, and why these patients have effectively been kicked out of the system. I am calling on Minister Varadkar to come before the Seanad now and explain what is going on here,” he concluded.

Dora Comes Up Trumps For Lusk Community Unit Local woman, Dora Fitzpatrick recently presented a cheque for €1000 to Friends of the Lusk Community Unit, something she has done for the last few years. Dora’s sister, Síle told the County Leader, “We raised the money for Lusk by running Car Boot Sales in the Market in Balbriggan and getting sponsorship for the Ladies Mini Marathon.” “Tom in C&T’s supermarket in Skerries gave us permission to fundraise outside his premises. Tom’s customers were very generous with their contributions. It was heartwarming to note the positive experience that was being recounted by so many people who had family members in Lusk Community Unit, both past and present,” said Síle. The €1000 raised is being used to fully refurbish seven of the sitting room armchairs at a cost of €150 each. A total of 53 chairs need to be done at a cost of €8000. This will
make the sitting room brighter and more homely. A start has been made on this project but it will take time to raise that amount of money. “This is a very practical and achievable goal though it will take time. To speed this along, we wondered if sponsoring an armchair might be a viable way to achieve this.” “We would like the opportunity to thank all the people who have supported this fundraising during 2015. We would like to thank Tom and his customers in C&T’s and John and Alan in the Balbriggan Market, off the M1, for their generosity and support throughout the year. We would also like to thank Marion Kinsella from Lusk for being there at the Boot Sales to sell with Dora regardless of the weather,” concluded Síle. All donations would be welcomed to sponsor a chair. Donations can be sent to Friends Of the Lusk Community Unit, Station Road, Lusk.

Late Night Soccer League In Donabate Local councillor, Paul Mulville (NP) has welcomed confirmation received from the Council’s Sports Office that a Late Night Soccer League is to take place in the Donabate Portrane All-Weather pitch, starting this Friday, 17th July. “I have long been raising the need for a late night soccer league to be run in the Donabate Portrane Allweather pitch, given the strong demand expressed by local young people. Smiling All The Way To Success
A House of Cards By Cathal Boland
President of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Siobhan Kinsella is pictured congratulating Susan McDermott of Smiles Dental on the company's six months of successful trading in Swords. Also pictured is Chamber CEO, Tony Lambert
Smiles Dental on Forster’s Way in Swords has just completed six months trading successfully in the town. Smiles Dental opened its doors last December. It is one of 19 clinics in Ireland, covering every aspect of dentistry from routine exams to whitening, fillings and cosmetic dentistry, including crowns, bridges and implants. Susan McDermott, Practice Manager at Smiles said, “We pride ourselves on excellent patient care and transparent pricing. There is a great sense of community spirit from the local customers, who have been very supportive of the business from day one. The neighbouring businesses have also been very friendly and supportive,” she said. Smiles Dental employs seven staff members, all from the North County area and is looking to increase this number as the clinic
grows. Included are two dentists, Denis Ryan and Leena Sharma and the intention is to employ a third one in September. They are also offering a 10 per cent discount to all local businesses. “Swords is a very busy town, which focuses on the needs of its community and is a pleasure to work in,” said Susan. President of Fingal Dublin Chamber Siobhan Kinsella, on congratulating Susan and the team at Smiles Dental said, “Swords and its growing population need top quality oral healthcare services and the chamber welcomes this new Smiles Dental Clinic, where Susan McDermott and the team provide excellent dental services in a really bright and pleasant environment. This clinic is a great addition to the town and has already established itself since opening in December last year.”
The annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle took place last Saturday week in aid of Kerry charities. Michael McEnery and his wife, Tracy Virgoe from Swords participated in the cycle in aid of the Kerry Hospice. This is their third time to take part in the event and each year they choose a different charity. This annual event has already raised a spectacular €8.4 million for Kerry charities over the years. Michael and Tracy are pictured taking a well deserved break along the way to enjoy the wonderful scenery of the Ring of Kerry
TTIP was back on the table in the EU Parliament last week. A compromise that called for “the ISDS (Investor-State Dispute Settlement) system with a new system for resolving disputes between investors and states.” was carried. Negotiations can now get back on track with the US. So the protest groups discovered, along with the Greeks, that it’s hard to play against the house, particularly when the house holds the important cards. Meanwhile the UK prepared to take maximum advantage of any opportunity that may arise from the Greek crisis, or indeed any other event that may require amendment to the EU treaties. When the UK set about redefining the relationship between them and the EU, most governments criticised them and the talk was of a UK exit from the community. Now there is an ever increasing mood within the community to take the opportunity presented by the UK to look
11
at the relationship between the EU and national parliaments. In the past week, the Belgian Foreign Minister said, “Belgium is prepared to shift powers back to member states, as demanded by the UK, but this should happen for all 28 member states together. I don’t want an EU à la carte. Also, we should discuss the possible shifting of more powers to the EU, to deal with our challenges coming from the East and South.” Those challenges referred to are across a whole range of issues which it seems the EU are not yet prepared to tackle in a comprehensive way. Greece’s difficulties are just below the surface in many other southern member states. Last week, those close to the incoming Polish President suggested that Poland’s Eurozone membership should be put to a referendum. They also called for the return of common sense to EU politics. The problems are not just economic, but as we have said in the past, they are also about migration and how problems and relationships are dealt with. Is Europe beginning to learn that it’s possible to be a good European while a critic of the institution?

Miracle Prayer
Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time I ask for a very special one (mention it). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. between Ireland and the UK can feel confident for the future,” he said. The Ryanair board said it believes that the current IAG offer maximises Ryanair shareholder value. The airline said it will now vote in favour of the motion at the Aer Lingus extraordinary general meeting next Thursday. “We believe the IAG offer for Aer Lingus is a reasonable one in the current market and we plan to accept it, in the best interests of Ryanair shareholders,” commented Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary. Minister for Transport, Paschal Donohoe said the Ryanair decision represented an important development in the future of Aer Lingus and points to a more secure future for the airline. He also said it was another important development in the extraordinary progress that Ryanair is making in European and Irish aviation. In a letter to Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes, European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager issued positive signals that the Commission will approve IAG’s takeover bid for Aer Lingus by 15th July.
