The Star Set To Shine Again There was great sadness earlier this year when the iconic Star Pub closed its doors after serving the people of Swords for 113 years. However, there may well be hope on the horizon, as well informed sources have indicated that The Star is set to rise from the ashes like a phoenix. It is believed that a well-known person with strong North County links and who has vast experience and expertise in the hospitality sector, is involved in negotiations to purchase the pub. If this speculation proves to be correct, this would be a great boost for the town in terms of attracting extra visitors. Already Swords, with its Purple Flag status for its night time economy is fast becoming a destination for people to enjoy the finest food, drink, entertainment and hospitality available anywhere. The County Leader spoke to CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Tony Lambert, who said, “There is much talk about The Star pub being purchased with lots of names being mentioned, which is great news for the town. If The Star were reopened with a new team to develop it to the great pub it once was, then Fingal Dublin Chamber would welcome such a development. Swords is a Purple Flag town and it is important that all our major businesses that provide evening time activities are welcoming and open for our visitors,” he concluded. Coilín O’Reilly, Senior Executive Officer for Tourism, Events and Heritage at Fingal County Council said, “Anytime a new business opens up, it’s good news for the daytime and nightime economy of Swords, particularly good quality businesses adding to the Purple Flag and tourism potential of the town.”

Former TD, Michael Kennedy and County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler are pictured with some of the cheer leaders at Malahide's Marching Band Classic, featuring the Marching Bands of Boston College and Georgia Tech at Malahide Castle and Gardens recently.

Minister Snubs Local Drugs Task Force North Dublin Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force was set up by the government, along with nine other Regional Drug Task Forces in Ireland to develop and implement plans to respond to drug problems in our areas. The Task Force, which is located in Swords, caters for the needs of individuals and families affected by these diseases in all of North County Dublin. At present they have four case workers to cover an area from Portmarnock right up to Balbriggan and all areas in between. To operate efficiently, the Task Force needs another four case workers to locate to outreach areas.” This would require a mere €250,000 out of a massive Catherine Byrne TD Health budget of €14 billion, but the Minister for Drugs, Catherine Byrne has refused to meet the Task Force in Swords to discuss their requirements and to look at the sterling work they do. Chairperson of North Dublin Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force, local TD, Darragh O’Brien (FF) is outraged at the Minister’s decision to snub the service. He told the County Leader, “At present we need four case workers, one under 18s specialist and we’re currently advertising for a family support specialist, which we are funding ourselves. The money for this will come from another project that we have agreed to divest from and will divert this money for the family support specialist,” he said. “People from all over the county come to use our service and that’s fine, but how do people from Balbriggan, Skerries or Rush to come here if they don’t have the means to get here. All we need is about an extra four people located in strategic areas

By Patrick Finnegan in the North County. The level of population here needs this kind of service,” he said. O’Brien continued, “We have not received any additional funding from Government for the last three years at least. We Chairperson of North have about 800 clients Dublin Drug and Alcohol using the service here Task Force, Darragh O'Brien TD and when Catherine Byrne was appointed Minister with responsibility for Drugs and Alcohol, I wrote to her, with the agreement of the board, as Chairperson, requesting a meeting with her to brief her on our situation particularly about our resources and the issues affecting us here in North County Dublin. We are one of 10 task forces in the country and other task forces are replicating what the team are doing here.

“We were really disappointed by the Minister’s response, when she said she wasn’t in a position to meet us. I think it’s astonishing that a Minister who is responsible for the area of drugs and rehabilitation education that she would not meet us. There is a meeting planned for the entire national drug task force co-ordinators and chairpersons, as a group, on the 30th of the month. “Of the 10 task forces nationally, we are the second least funded, behind one in the west of Ireland. All we are looking for is fair play. In fact through our early intervention, we are saving the State millions. We have been refused funding on a continuing basis and now when we request to meet the Minister, she couldn’t be bothered. This beggars belief,” said an angry O’Brien. The Minister is quoted in an article in Drugnet Ireland, a national publication that circulates across the country, which covers different drug related issues, where she speaks in a negative way about drug and alcohol task forces. The article said, “Minister Byrne has been critical of the way in which drug services are structured and has expressed concern about the duplication of services in some areas. She has questioned the suitability of ‘the drug task force’ model, looking for its ‘reconfiguration’ so that the needs of users would be better met. Also she has sought change to school-based drug and alcohol education programmes,” the article concluded. O’Brien is mystified that the Minister can hold such a view, given that she has not even bothered

to visit the service here in Swords. “She is making uninformed comments that are very negative. Drug and alcohol task forces are the only community based structures dealing with drugs and alcohol locally and she needs to engage with task forces to see the great work they do,” he concluded.

Deserved Recognition For Swords Tidy Towns The good news that Swords has been invited to the results show for the National Tidy Towns competition, which will be held at the Helix

A delighted Chairperson of Swords Tidy Towns, Ken Duffy is pictured in Swords after receiving news that the town has been nominated in four categories in the upcoming Tidy Towns results ceremony

Theatre at the end of the month, has been widely welcomed in the town. Chairperson of Swords Tidy Towns, Ken Duffy explained that if you are invited to the finals, it means you are in the running for an award, or have been nominated. This is a tremendous boost for our tireless volunteers who turn out in all weather to make sure that this day was possible,” he said. He continued, “This is a great boost for all, and the spirit of the group is second to none. Swords is in the Large Town category and this is the first time we have reached this stage of the competition,” he added. We entered into four categories and hopefully we will get some recognition on the day. A few months ago, we entered the all-island Tidy Towns competition in Belfast and we came in the top 15 out of a total of 800 entrants, which put us in a special category and was a great achievement,” he said. The hope is that Swords can emulate the wonderful showing of our local Tidy Towns high achievers, Skerries, Malahide and Lusk, who have paved the way for other towns in the county to achieve the highest score they can. Hopefully there will be joyous scenes for our entrants at The Helix.

Portrane Club Opens New Pitch Last Wednesday, 7th September was a day to remember for St Ita’s FC, Portrane when their new allweather pitch was officially opened by Chief Executive of the FAI, John Delaney. A large crowd of juvenile players, team mentors and club officers turned up at the club’s ground at Ballymastone for the occasion. Club chairman, Conor Tonra thanked everyone who played a part in making this happen, by helping to secure Sports Capital funding, including local representatives, who were present on the day. Also present was County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler, who said, “This is a fantastic club where so many volunteers give of their time so freely. These people are precious and they are the ones that keep communities together. This club participates in everything and the mini Euros was a phenomenal success, as well as their participation in the Fingal Festival of Football recently. This is a fitting reward for the efforts of everyone at this club,” he said. John Delaney said, “It’s great to be here and I would like to thank Fingal County Council, particularly

Having facilities like this in a great club like St Ita’s and with the help of the Council, it goes a long way to ensuring that everyone, irrespective of colour, creed or sex can participate in games. I want to compliment the club, which does a tremendous job looking after 350 members. It’s unbelievable just to get kids away

from PlayStations and computers,” he said. The biggest cheer of the night came when Delaney made two presentations to the club; firstly 50 tickets for the kids to see Ireland play Georgia in October and with a clubhouse to be built, he promised a direct grant of €25,000 towards that, rounding off a perfect evening for the club.

More Budget Leeway for Big Ones Speaking at a meeting of the Oireachtas EU Affairs Committee, Fine Gael Senator and EU affairs spokesman, Neale Richmond, has asked if the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Programme (TTIP) is dead in the water as it faces more very difficult months of negotiation and possible derailment. He continued “Of all Member States, Ireland could benefit the most as we’ve seen with recent decisions that have allowed Irish beef export to access the US market. However, TTIP is facing into very serious difficulties and it could be totally delayed, depending on the results of the US Presidential election. “A number of groups have raised understandable concerns about the TTIP negotiating process and the lack of transparency, while elements of any potential deal have major concern for a number of groups in Ireland, but especially in Germany. There have been numerous failed attempts at a decent trade deal between the EU and the US. I

So TTIP may be about to get that last push to put it over the line before a new US administration takes office next year. EU Budget rules may be about to change with a more flexible approach taken in the calculation of deficits. In his state of the Union address, it is expected that Jean-Claude will signal the change in direction. It’s suggested that he will propose an easing with exclusion of education and investment spending from the calculations. The proposal will not be welcomed by all his Commissioners and there may yet be strident opposition to the proposal. The proposal will be welcomed in Italy and France, as both have lobbied for a more lenient approached to calculating deficits. The great difficulty is that the permitted deficit levels are enshrined in the Lisbon Treaty and presents real difficulty for Junker in finding ways to be more flexible in the matter.

last. Selected Aramark chefs and managers from the culinary development team were invited to tour the Keelings production facility, seeing first-hand where their fruit and vegetables are grown. The Aramark Bright Stars initiative, which was launched in April 2016, is specifically designed for chefs to get hands-on with some of Aramark’s top producers, suppliers and ingredients. The sessions are delivered in conjunction with Aramark’s industry partners Unilever Food Solutions. Colm Bury, Managing Director, Keelings Farm Fresh said: “Keelings were delighted to support Aramark’s Bright Star Culinary Academy. We thoroughly believe in bringing chefs back to basics and equipping them with the knowledge and understanding of how fresh fruit and vegetables are grown in Ireland. Bringing chefs on a culinary experience, exposing them to all the stages involved at Keelings is something as a company we feel extremely passionate about,” he said.

NO PAUSE AT MENOPAUSE Building on the success of the Neovadiol Compensating Complex range of skincare products for women experiencing the menopause, Vichy is marking Menopause Awareness Month with the launch of its new night time repair cream, Neovadiol Compensating Complex Night, specifically designed to help the skin deal with the impact of menopause on the skin at night-time. The gel-balm texture has a 'quick break' technology which gives an burst of freshness to the skin in order to combat the sensation of warm skin. The formula is able to absorb sweat and leave skin with a matt finish and a feeling of freshness. Vichy Laboratories have been at the forefront of

menopausal skincare research for over seventeen years and the pioneering Neovadiol range was the first skincare collection ever developed to counteract the impact of menopause on cutaneous ageing by using a patented combination of ingredients that mimics youth hormone DHEA. Furthermore, night-time menopausal symptoms can cause disruption to women’s lives the next day with almost two-thirds saying they are often left feeling drained and lethargic the day after experiencing night-time symptoms. Additionally, seven in 10 women said that it has affected their skin – 34% reported dry and irritated skin and 32% said it is dull or lacks luminosity.

Ryan Blasts ‘Asleep At The Wheel’ Minister Local TD, Brendan Ryan, Labour Party spokesperson for Transport, has described as “astonishing” the fact that no meaningful talks have taken place since workers at Dublin Bus announced they are engaging in six days of industrial action this month. Ryan said, “We now see the beginning of strike action by Dublin Bus workers which will impact on over 400,000 commuters, including those here in my constituency. I find it incredible that Minister Shane Ross has not taken any interest in resolving this very serious industrial dispute. There has already been one bitter industrial dispute this year when the LUAS workers went on strike at a time when the now Government parties were dozily walking towards forming a Government. Now the Minister seems asleep at the wheel, with no interest in rolling his sleeves up, getting both sides around the table and finding a solution. No wonder he thinks being Minister is a doddle. He’s not doing the work of Minister.” “Dublin Bus has undergone many reforms over the past few years. In a climate of budgetary cutbacks, the drivers shared their share of the burden. The company also invested in new vehicles, improved onboard broadband services and rolled out the Dublin Bus App. Due to the commitment to the city and county over many decades, the company and it’s workers are held in great regard by the people of Dublin. It makes it even more incredible that our Minister, who is Dublin based, seems so oblivious to the impact of this industrial action. It’s time for Minister Ross to wake up,” said Ryan.

A fundraising Music Session in aid of Remember Us Special Needs Group will be held at Fingallians GAA Club in Swords on Friday, 16th September at 8pm. Celebrating 40 Years of Adult Education in the Community

One of the most famed schools in the North County is celebrating a landmark anniversary this month. Not only has Malahide Community School been providing top class education for its day pupils, it has also been involved in bringing Adult Education to the local community for the past 40 years. With a great surge in the popularity of Adult Education, there is no shortage of excellent facilities across the North County, however, leading the way with the choice and variety of courses is Malahide Community School. A number of day school teachers at Malahide Community School have been involved in organising and running the adult education classes over the last forty years. It all started with Sister Mary Peter in 1976, followed by Bill McCartney in 1984 and Mary Killen in 1984. Patricia McDonagh who was an Adult Education Officer from 1990 to 1994 is currently the Principal of the day school. Crucially in

2000 Department of Education Circular 46/00 established the new position of Director of Adult Education in schools and Robbie Harrold was appointed as the First Director of Adult Education in Malahide Community School. Over the last 40 years, the school has introduced, maintained and promoted Adult Education within the local community. Benefits of Adult Education in the local community include offering the opportunity to the community to continually learn and develop new skills and improve capacities. Malahide Community School offers an environment where

creativity and imagination are cherished. The team believes in fostering a love of learning, which parents pass on to their children. The provision of Adult Education in a Community School is a wonderful model of efficiency. There is no direct funding from the exchequer, it is a self financing model. Creativity And Fun At Jo Jingles

Pictured are Aisling Moore and Nicole Purdy after receiving their Leaving Cert results at Portmarnock Community School

Jane Kelly is a mother of two young boys who tried every class on offer to entertain and hopefully educate them. She quickly became bored with all other classes and then thanks to a friend, she found Jo Jingles. She spent the next three years regularly attending classes with both of her boys. Her passion only grew whilst she was teaching and she is

thrilled to have taken over the local franchise in 2011. Having seen first hand as a mother the benefits Jo Jingles brings to children, she is now delighted to have the wonderful job of bringing that experience to others. Jane along with her class teachers Linda and Tara have been providing weekly classes during school terms in Drogheda, Bettystown,

Rush, Balbriggan, Swords, and Skerries for a number of years now. They also visit many crèches and Montessoris throughout the northeast with their weekly fun musical programmes. Jo jingles loves attending birthday parties too. As the UK and Ireland’s leading children’s entertainment provider, the Jo Jingles programme has a proven track record in helping children improve their confidence, speech, co-ordination and appreciation of music. Through fun and lively music sessions, they use

a wide variety of instruments, songs, props and puppets, while the children are having a positive

and enjoyable experience working together with their parents /carers. It’s a great bonding time and a chance to meet other parents in a relaxed and caring environment.

The third and final St Finian’s GAA Club Summer Club Camp took place from Tuesday 23rd August to Friday 26th August, just prior to the children heading back to school after the summer holidays. Despite heavy rain on the first day, the coaches and participants made the most of indoor activities and games in the hall. Credit is due to James Devlin and all of the coaches and volunteers who

Donal Redmond, Oran Rodgers, Liam Fennessey, Adam Edwards and Liam Scahill

Sean Quigley and Cody Gavin

Amy Elliott and Deryn Gosson

contributed to the success of all three summer camps. The children all enjoyed the fun and games, as they practised their football and hurling skills, with small sided games, which gave everyone a chance to display their newly acquired skills under the watchful eyes of the coaches. Maybe a new Dublin football, camogie or hurling star has been unearthed. Let’s hope so!
