Just Another Cynical Election Promise? The thorny issue of a fit-for-purpose transport system for Swords and the Airport, seems to be further away than ever, with the announcement that any project will take up to 10 years to deliver. This is an option that is truly not acceptable to citizens of the North County, and Swords in particular, who have listened to broken promise, after broken promise by successive governments for far too long. This comes with the news that Transport Minister, Paschal Donohoe (FG) said, “There is a valuation process underway, in relation to a number of transport options for Swords and the airport.” While Minister Donohoe is promising a new hardrail network, a new redesigned metro, or a combination of these, with the controversial BRT (bendy bus), it will take up to 10 years to deliver. This news will come as a crushing blow to many local residents and business people, who are crying out for a proper light rail transport system for the area. Many feel that the government is long-fingering this project, and that this is just a cynical general election ploy, designed to garner votes for his Fine Gael colleagues in the area. Attempting to fob off the hard pressed citizens of the North County, by using the preferred light rail
By Patrick Finnegan system as an electioneering ploy to win votes at the next general election, is one that will be judged harshly by the local electorate. Plans for a light rail system for the airport and Swords was first mooted around 20 years ago, so taking a further 10 years to deliver this project means that it will then have spanned around six general election periods in total. When the Minister stated that, “We don’t have the foundations for the high capacity public transport system our country needs,” residents and business people alike in the area, will believe that the government is simply kicking the can down the road, and has Minister Donohue no real desire to deliver the light rail system that is so badly needed. The fear among most, is that we are going to be saddled with the BRT (bendy bus option), which is

fine as a complementary system to a light rail system, but not as a stand alone system. Taking ten years to deliver what has been promised by successive governments, means that an entire generation of people will have been raised on the promise of a proper light rail system for the North County. In the meantime, there seems to be an insatiable appetite for building Luas lines on the southside of the city, which beggars belief for many Continued on page 16
Bumper Season Ahead For Local Company
Managing Director of Keogh Crisps, Tom Keogh (right) is pictured with his brother Ross, at the family farm at Westpalstown, Oldtown, as he displays the new seed potatoes which are in the process of being planted for the upcoming season
The award winning North County company, Keogh’s Crisps which is based at Westpalstown, Oldtown are getting ready for a bumper season, with the new seed potatoes being planted now. The County Leader paid a visit to this progressive local business and met with Managing Director, Tom Keogh, who spoke about the company’s aspirations for the upcoming season. He said, “We’re really looking forward to the new season Generally just after St Patrick’s Day, we start planting the new potatoes and with the good weather, we have been able to start planting at Middleton, near Malahide. Last year was a very bad year for potatoes, but a good one for growth, with one of the best summers on record. However, that led to bumper yields, which dropped the price considerably, well below the
cost of production. We’re hoping for a good growing season, but with better prices for 2015,” he said. In farming, there has to be a little hardship before there’s any money and if there are problems in the planting, growing or harvesting seasons, this will lead to higher pricing, but fortunately we have not experienced that yet.” He also spoke about land used by the company at Middleton, Malahide for growing potatoes. He said, “We start as close as possible to the coast. The main reason is that there is lighter soil here, which can be cultivated earlier, as it dries out sooner. As it’s closer to the sea, you don’t have the same issues with frost, as further inland. We can plant crops earlier, without a risk of the plants being damaged by frost when they emerge in May and we’re hoping for a great season,” he concluded.

Easter Flower Show In Naul Naul Gardening and Flower Club are holding an Easter flower arranging demonstration by Chelsea medal winner, Christopher White on Wednesday 1st April at 8pm in the studio at Three Gates, Naul.
Aer Lingus Deal Likely After Easter
The RNLI, is issuing its own call for help, appealing for local volunteers and fundraisers to get involved with ‘Mayday’, the organisation’s forthcoming national fundraising event which will take place from 1st to 4th May this year. Street collections and fundraising events will be taking place around the North County, and the charity, which saves lives at sea, is calling on people to show their support – either by volunteering to help with collections and events, or by taking part in a fundraising activity in aid of the RNLI. Most of the events will have a ‘welly’ theme, in a nod to the yellow wellies – an essential piece of kit – worn by the charity’s volunteer lifeboat crew members. Welly walks and welly-themed cake sales are just two examples of the events that will be taking place. All money raised through Mayday fundraising events will support the RNLI’s lifesaving work – it could be used to fund crew training, buy new crew kit, or contribute towards the running costs of a lifeboat station.
The completion of the deal on IAG’s takeover of Aer Lingus, is likely to be completed in the government’s first cabinet meeting after the Easter break. The momentum was interrupted due to the recent St Patrick’s Day celebrations and the fact that so many ministers were out of the country. The €1.3 billion deal is expected to include concessions and sweeteners from IAG in an effort to secure the sale. Talks continued over the weekend between the govern-
ment and IAG, and it is understood that IAG boss, Donabate man
Willie Walsh is prepared to offer increased commitments in relation to the main stumbling block, namely the valuable Heathrow slots. Walsh had previously committed to a five year commitment on the slots, but the government were unhappy with this, and demanded at least a ten year commitment.
It is thought that IAG are prepared to extend the it’s commitment to seven years, or agree to ten years, but with more conditions around the slots. If agreed, the takeover could be agreed in April, with momentum from all sides favouring the deal. Trade unions are now
edging towards an acceptance that the deal will go ahead, despite their misgivings about employee terms and conditions and likely job losses. If the deal receives cabinet backing, the government will then seek Dail approval for the sale of it’s 25.1 per cent stake in the company

Local Authors Visit Skerries School Students from Skerries Community College were treated to visits from two local authors on successive days recently. First up was Skerries man, Shane Hegarty, who is a former pupil of Skerries Community College, and he thrilled the students with stories about how he went about writing his latest novel, Darkmouth, which recently topped the most popular Children’s book category. He spoke about where his ideas come from and gave valuable insights to being a successful author. Next up was Balbriggan author,
Kevin McCarthy, who also held the attention of the students. He gave them useful tips on how to go about writing a novel, and also some very interesting statistics on the most popular and most read books ever. Kevin also spoke about his own two novels, called ‘Irregulars’ and ‘Peeler’ which are set in Ireland in the 1920s. The students engaged eagerly with both authors, and judging by the quality of questions posed by students, it is quite likely that Skerries Community College may well produce another successful novelist in the future.

where speed limits are concerned. It is also recommended that speed reviews be carried out every five years,” he said. “The guidelines address a number of areas and sees the introduction of new road signage to deal with speed limits in rural areas on minor local roads and for the implementation of new urban ‘Slow Zones’ in residential areas to reduce the speed limit to 30 km/h.” “A speed limit is the maximum speed at which vehicles may legally travel on a section of road between speed limit signs. Nobody knows our area’s roads as well as the County Engineer and I would urge the commencement of a review at the soonest opportunity. That said, it is the responsibility of a driver to obey speed limits at all times – and a speed limit should never be seen as a target speed for drivers,” Lavin added.

Busy AGM For Malahide Community Forum The Malahide Community Forum recently held their monthly AGM and spoke about a number of issues that are important to the local residents. Firstly, an update was given on the Acquisition and Development of the Casino. When Michael Howard last addressed the Forum AGM in March 2012, it had been agreed that the Fry Model Railway would be acquired by Bus Eireann. Since then, with the work of a committee and the goodwill of Fingal County Council, thanks to the bequest of the late Mr Michael Gaffney, the acquisition of Casino and the land around it and The Fry Model Railway was completed on 23rd December 2014. The collection will be housed as soon as is practical and the works on Casino house will be completed, according to the forum. “It is anticipated that the County Council will erect a plaque to honour the contribution of Mr Gaffney,” said Howard. their time and energy to help achieve the project. Next, there was an update by Heidi Bedell from Malahide Tidy Towns. Malahide reclaimed its Gold Medal status this year. “A lot of painting has been necessary after a spate of graffiti,” she said. Extra flowers have been planted and she asked if people growing seeds would give any spare plants or pots of plants to the Tidy Towns. She also suggested that residents might adopt a patch in certain areas of the village and weed and water there, and if anyone has spare flower bulbs could they plant them in a public place. Other issues raised included the question of moving the bus stop from Killeen Terrace to alleviate the traffic congestion when a bus stops there and pavement congestion from waiting passengers. A Mr. Sheedy said he had spoken to Dublin Bus and met with County Council engineers, and they said they are giving it consideration. The chairman then thanked Mark Hely Hutchinson on his retirement from the committee for his long contribution and also Margaret Cure at the end of her seven year term as Honorary Secretary. A presentation in appreciation was then made to both members.

Frankie Monaghan, Swords No. We weren’t good enough at all, to be honest.
Thomas Fitzsimons, Swords Not really, the other team was definitely quicker and better than Ireland. They wanted to win. If they had played at home, I had expected that they win. But no, the better team won and that is fair enough.

Liam Herron, Swords No team ever deserve to win, they have to go and win. There is a strange thing about Irish teams. When they’re favourite to win, they never play up to their potential. We lost this match, but that is the way it goes. It is only a game.
Pauline Walsh, Swords Well I thought they played very well!!! I thought they deserved it.
Dermot Donnelly, Swords Well, I think they should have won. I was very disappointed with Ireland. But that is the way it is and you never bet against Wales.
Adam Lennon, Swords To be honest, I think Wales had a better defence than Ireland. They played well, but I think there was too much pressure to win because it was the match that really counted. They should have done it better, but unfortunately they didn’t.
Ken McCarthy, Cork In the first twenty minutes they were very poor and they didn’t play that good after that time. So Wales deservedly won.

Fire And Police Chiefs Excluded From Pension Deal The long running airport pension dispute, which is close to resolution, excludes the country’s top airport police and fire chiefs from a €5 million sweetener to get the deal over the line. A total of approximately 30 highly paid airport police and fire officers are excluded from the ‘transition retirement package’ designed for junior members impacted by changes to the retirement age. According to sources, the deal was part of an overall package for members of the troubled IASS (Irish Aviation Superannuation Scheme) pension deal, where Dublin Airport Authority and Shannon Airport Authority agreed to pay bigger lump sums into a new defined contribution scheme for more than 850 lower paid and older staff members. Trade union, Siptu maintain that an upcoming ballot of all staff will be held on the basis that the outcome is the best that can possibly be achieved in negotiations. Another stumbling block to the resolution of the pension dispute concerns anger among police and fire workers over a new physical fitness and medical policy. This seems to have been resolved, when it was agreed that officers found to be unfit for rescue and firefighting duties can be redeployed with pay and allowances red circled.

Kodaline To Play At Student Enterprise Finals Kodaline, the local band who have had great chart success over the past year, took time out of their busy schedule to help the Fingal Local Enterprise Office (LEO) announce details for the Student Enterprise Awards National Finals, which take place in Croke Park on April 22nd. Co-ordinated locally by the LEO, the competition is the most successful student enterprise programme of its kind and two members of Kodaline, the lead singer, Steve Garrigan, and lead guitarist, Mark Prendergast, set up their own enterprise ten years ago selling music lessons. Steve Garrigan (lead vocals) and Mark Prendergast (guitar) both went to Cólaiste Choilm in Swords and Vinny May (drums) went to Portmarnock Community School. Both schools take part in the Student Enterprise Awards

No matter what career you follow, a good understanding of how business works will definitely help you,” Garrigan said. Thanking Kodaline for their support of student entrepreneurship, Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise with the County Council, said: “Both
Coláiste Choilm in Swords and Portmarnock Community School have a very strong tradition of supporting student entrepreneurship in the classroom and both schools have proudly represented the Fingal region at the National Finals of the Student Enterprise Awards. As past pupils of participating schools, we are very grateful to Kodaline for helping us to promote entrepreneurship to a whole new generation of students.”
Funding Available For Community Tourism Initiative The County Council have announced that applications for funding are now being sought under the Community Tourism Initiative for the Diaspora. The initiative, launched last year, builds on the community involvement legacy of The Gathering 2013. Now in its second year, the scheme provides a national fund of €1m to support local community-based events and festivals throughout the North County each year. Last year, a total of 18 local events were supported in the local area attracting visitors from overseas. The festivals funded last year included: Balbriggan Summerfest, Skerries Waterfest and the Fingal County Show (Fingal Farmers). Administered locally by the County Council, the application process for 2015 is now open and will close on
March 31st. Interested parties are advised to contact Economic.Development@fingal.ie to apply. Announcing this year’s funding, Ethna Felten, Director of Economic Development Services said: “We all witnessed the benefits from The Gathering and this scheme gives us an opportunity to build on its legacy. The Community Tourism Initiative allows us to sustain many of the grass roots networks, which sprang to life during The Gathering in Fingal and sustain an infrastructure of events and relationships which will have long term tourism and social benefits for this region for many years to come,” she said. “I would urge anyone out there with a good idea or interesting event, which would help us to reach out to the diaspora, to get in touch with us and make an application.”

A man, who had over 50,000 baby lettuce plants stolen, when thieves broke into his company’s yard at Lower Channel Road in Rush in the early hours of Friday morning last, has appealed for their return. Rush man, Brian McNamara launched an appeal for the return of the plants, which were about to be planted out, as he believes they will die unless they are watered and planed into
the ground soon, with sunlight in a normal growing process. The robbery happened when thieves broke into D McNamara and Sons yard, and a Mitsubishi Canter was stolen. The plants were located in the truck, and gardai are not sure if the truck or the plants were the target of the thieves. The truck has not be seen since the robbery. Brian McNamara said, “We are concerned about getting them back,
TAG Awards Ceremony In Donabate Donabate Community College were delighted to welcome the Garda Band to the school recently, where they presented certificates to the Transition Year students who participated in the ‘TAG’ programme. TAG stands for ‘Teenagers and Garda Programme’, and it aims to promote positive engagement between teenagers and Gardai. Students who participated in the programme spent six weeks working with Gardai discussing a variety of issues. Garda Kevin Turner spoke briefly on what the TAG Programme was all about and how impressed he was by the effort all the TY students put in and then introduced Garda Dong, who also gave a short speech on the work that was done by the students and the importance of open communication between young people and the Gardai. Students were then presented with their certificates and congratulated on all their work on the programme.
and I don’t know if they are lying on the side of the road somewhere, or maybe still in the truck. Unless they are watered and put in the ground soon, they will be dead,” he said.
Bord Bia presented its annual Garden Industry Awards at a reception in its Dublin headquarters, where fourteen Dublin businesses were honoured. Among the recipients of a Landscape Quality Award were two companies from the North County, namely contractors, Virgoe McEnery Landscaping based in Balheary, and Malahide’s Peter O’Brien & Sons. The awards recognise and promote excellence across the gardening industry, while celebrating the industry’s dedication to achieving the highest standards of operation. A total of 38 garden centres and 17 landscape service providers were recognised, in addition to a number of special category award winners.
The Bord Bia Quality Assurance Programme has been instrumental in raising standards within garden centres and landscape businesses across Ireland. The awards seek to recognise those within the programme who have met the highest industry standards and that consistently strive for excellence. Commenting on the winners, Carol Marks, Development and Marketing Specialist, Bord Bia added, “It has never been easier for people to identify Ireland’s best garden industry providers. The Bord Bia award serves as a visible badge of merit for consumers to look out for when visiting these award winning garden centres, or availing of landscape services,” she concluded.

The towns of Rush and Lusk are located close to Skerries and both are linked by a common railway station. Both towns have increased in population in the past few years, yet they have managed to retain their rural delight and intrigue. Rush and Lusk have similar, yet very different charms that attract so many visitors every year. Rush has always been a popular holiday destination for Dubliners in the 50s and 60s, and is a lovely place, with an award winning community spirit. This charming seaside town has more to offer than you might guess. Rush is renowned as the heart of market gardening in Ireland and many locals are

employed in agriculture and horticulture here. The surrounding area presents a beautiful countryside, producing the finest local produce, which is available in many of the town’s fine shops. Rush has a great variety of shops and it has become a place which offers a great range of products and value for money. The fact that local produce is sold locally, you can be assured of quality
and freshness at the keenest prices around. The arrival of the new shopping centre has added to the range and choice now available to shoppers. There are also the typical stores selling top of the range clothes and the finest food. In comparison to the bigger towns, it is easier to go shopping, as there aren’t so many people and even the parking situation is much better. With the

recent expansion of the town, amenities and choice for shoppers has increased greatly and for many, there is no need to go to the larger centres anymore to purchase items that were once out of the reach of residents of Rush. Rush might be small, but it has a great variety of places to eat and drink. As in all quaint locations, you will find many interesting restaurants and

atmospheric pubs, where friendly locals are only too willing to engage in conversation. After a visit to the town’s shops and after picking up that surprise bargain, you can take the weight off your feet in one of the town’s fine coffee shops and just watch the world pass by. Rush has always been a place of interest to tourists, and visitors can take a very pleasant walk down to the quint little harbour, which is much admired by so many. The view from here over the sea is truly beautiful. The town is served by a rail link and, although the station it is nearer to neighbouring Lusk, the town can be accessed by a
regular bus service from here. Rush has always been a centre for culture and the arts and, in the Millbank Theatre, it has one of the most progressive theatres in the land. It is home to the Rush Dramatic society, which is famed all over the North County, for their quality plays and dramas. And the Musical Society here is respected far and wide for their annual productions, and is now based at the former Garda station in the town. As Spring is in the air, the local Tidy Towns committee will soon commence work to make the town as beautiful as possible. After great success in last year’s Tidy Towns contest, we’ve no

Jointly exhibiting is of course beneficial to the art buying public too, because it offers a greater diversity of styles and subject matter,” said a spokesperson for the group. “We invite people to take a journey through the eyes of someone else and enjoy the interpretation of art through the different expressions of art on display.”

New Firming In-Shower Body Moisturiser From Nivea If the mere thought of casting aside your winter wardrobe makes you shudder and the words ‘bikini body’ bring you out in a cold sweat, help could be at hand with a skin-firming innovation breakthrough from NIVEA. Introducing In-Shower Q10 Firming Body Moisturiser (€7.38), which leaves skin feeling firmer, available from pharmacies and grocery stores nationwide from April. Combining one of the skin’s own substances – Coenzyme Q10 – with refreshing menthol, the unique firming formulation penetrates deep into the skin. The lotion contains unique Q10 massage beads that literally melt into the skin when applied under hot water, making skin feel tightened with a slight cooling sensation. Q10 is an essential part of the metabolic process for energy production, helping protect skin from oxidative damage. As the skin ages, the level of Q10 decreases, leaving skin susceptible to increased stress and damage, which ultimately leads to sagging. The Firming Body Moisturiser helps replenish Q10 levels, supporting surface skin cell renewal and improving the appearance of skin. Nivea In-Shower Q10 Firming Body Lotion is available from pharmacies and grocery stores nationwide.

Give Them Fruit By Cathal Boland So the Greek financial crisis continues. Brussels stating that Greece is breaking trust and some suggesting that Alexis Tsipras (Greek PM) needs to change his finance minister. Tsipras is holding his position that his party will “not go back on what (was) promised” going on to call on his fellow Eurozone members to stop taking “unilateral decisions.” As Frank Carson used to say “it’s in the way you tell em” and so it appears that there is plenty of spin coming from both camps. Brian Hayes has extolled the benefits of the 5+ axle vehicle ban from Dublin city centre seven days a week between the hours of 07.00-19.00. Speaking in the Parliament last week, Brian told of the success of this initiative implemented eight years ago. He told his fellow members that 1,000 HGVs per day were removed from Dublin’s quays alone. He said that the change in the quality of life in Dublin has been dramatic. He told the meeting that such

a ban can benefit other European Capitals. On a juicer note, it good to see that €1.2m is allocated for the School Fruit Scheme here in Ireland for 2015/16. This is 75 per cent funded by the EU with the balance contributed by the Irish Government. This scheme has the potential to reach 12 million children across 25 countries. It is hoped that this intervention which has run since 2009 will reverse the trend of declining fruit and vegetable sales while encouraging healthier eating habits amongst children. It’s success would provide additional market opportunities for North County growers. An expenses scandal appears to be breaking amongst MEPs with the UK’s UKIP MEP Janice Atkinson been suspended by her party after The Sun filmed her chief of staff appearing to ask a restaurant manager to issue an inflated invoice to allow the party to claim a larger amount from the party’s EU-level foundation, the Initiative for Direct Democracy in Europe, which is in turn financed through the budget of the European Parliament. While serious question are asked in respect of how other MEPs are using allowances provided for the employment of parliamentary aids.
Butler Praises Council Local councillor Darragh Butler (FF) has praised the County Council for organising this year’s St Patrick’s Day parades in Swords. “I’d like to congratulate the County Council, their Events Team and everyone who helped out or participated in the St. Patrick’s Days parade last week,” Butler told the County Leader. “The Swords parade was excellent and I think the best one yet since the parade returned a few years ago. An estimated 25,000 turned up to view the parade which is staggering and it was really great to see Swords Castle open to the public for the afternoon.” “They estimate that 3,000 people took the opportunity to see inside the Castle grounds and inside the refurbished chapel,” he added.
Aer Lingus ‘In Breach Pastoral Event In Lusk Of Consumer Law’ Aer Lingus are one of three airlines, that are facing legal action in the UK over alleged breaches of consumer law, in regard to their handling of passengers hit by disruptions to flights British Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) has announced it has launched enforcement action against Aer Lingus and will seek a court order, unless they comply. This comes after BCAA carried out a six month review of airline policies in relation to supporting passengers during disruption, including heir approaches to paying flight delay compensation, and providing information to passengers about their rights. A spokesperson for Aer Lingus said, “Aer Lingus procedures relating to the provision of information to customers affected by operational disruption, are fully compliant with all the relevant regulations. We have provided a number of documents to the BCAA recently to emphasise this point.”

Recycling Skips So now, the plans have been drawn, the paint has been bought, the kids are out and you’re armed with hammer and brush ready to go. But what to do with the broken floor tiles, the damaged furniture, odd cuts of wood, bricks and blocks of differing dimensions and the varying other objects which can’t be conveniently thrown on the fire and the bin men aren’t around until next week, even though your wheelie bin is overflowing already. The solution is the humble skip, being that skips are the most environmentally friendly and tidiest method of waste disposal for non hazardous materials. You call the hiring company, their truck drops the skip off, you fill it up, they pick the skip up, you wave your rubbish goodbye, it’s that simple. Recycling companies that hire out skips are a great way to ensure household waste can be reused, thus being friendlier to the environment and providing a cleaner, convenient service. Skip hire companies will deliver the empty skip, then remove the full skip to their depot to sort through the various bits and pieces to seek out and separate what can appear as a useable commodity. It’s something to bear in mind if you’re thinking of moving house or having a general clean up.

A Career in Bio Energy Therapy If you would like to learn the intuitive, diagnostic and treatment skills of the most successful and exciting therapy in health care, then a Diploma Course in Bio Energy is for you. Bio Energy is a series of hand movements called “protocols” which are powerful and effective healing techniques that work by rebalancing the life force within and around the body. If the flow of energy
becomes imbalanced, stagnant or disturbed in any way, it affects not just the physical body by disturbing its function and allowing disease in, but also the mental, spiritual and emotional aspects also. Gemma Hipson is a practising Bio Energy Therapist and launched the academy in September 2013 and she is now taking bookings for her 3rd Diploma course starting in
September 2015 and qualifying in May 2016. The Diploma course is part time, one weekend a month over nine months. Come to the workshops, where you will be introduced to the Diploma Course objectives and demonstrate Bio Energy. There are four workshop dates to choose from. Equally important is that under no circumstances should we allow a DART spur from Clongriffin to Dublin Airport to proceed. “My real worry is that this Government will fob us off with the Swiftway bendy buses and this awful Dart spur. Yet again, it would be another great transport win for the southside of Dublin in that they are now connected to the airport and a major defeat for the north county.” He concluded, “A rail link from Swords, taking in Dublin Airport and DCU to O’Connell Street, should be the only solution that we will accept and we need to make this clear to all parties when they come knocking on our doors for the 2015/16 General Election.
