Balbriggan’s Kung-Fu Pensioner By Patrick Finnegan living on the Aran Islands, and she said to me; “Da, you’re not a young fellow anymore, but despite that, I actually love it. My worst time is at the weekends, when there’s no training. I look forward to Monday, Wednesday and Friday so much, I’m just sorry I didn’t take it up years ago,” said the infectious Sean. “My decision to take up this wonderful sport has had a huge impact on my life, and has changed my outlook completely. I’ve played football all my life, since I could walk, but I’m sorry I didn’t take this up instead,” declared Sean. “The head man, Keith is very knowledgeable, and he can work on muscles and when I got the cancer seven years ago, I gave up cigarettes. I thought they were the cause of my cancer, but they were not. My health has improved out of all proportions since I came here. They’re like a family to me, and we all encourage each other,” he said.

The decision of a 72 year old Balbriggan man to take up Kung-Fu karate, is one that is having a profound impact on his life. His story is certain to be an inspiration to people of his age, who feel they have no direction in their lives. Sean Dunne, from Pinewood in Balbriggan has had lifelong health issues and he has been on inhalers for chronic asthma. He is also suffering from a rare form of cancer, but he maintains that his decision to take up this sport, has had a very beneficial effect on his health. Sean started his Kung Fu journey in August 2013, very much by accident. He explained to the County Leader about how this came to pass. “I got into the bad habit of watching daytime soaps on the telly and one day I was passing by Blue Dragon school of Iron Fist Kung Fu on Convent Lane in Balbriggan, and as I was being nosy, I decided to have a look. I met Sifu (teacher) Keith Fanning and I spoke to him about my health issues. I played sport all my life, but there were no inhalers when I was a lad,” said Sean. He continued, “I was always fascinated by martial arts and Keith was wonderful. He told me to give it a go and see. The only thing that would have held me back was the asthma. Before I started here nine months ago, I was on a nebuliser twice a day, and using up a ventolin inhaler once a week. Since I started training, I haven’t touched a nebuliser in the past eight months, and I use one inhaler every six weeks, instead of one a week. It’s worked wonders for me,” said a delighted Sean. Sean’s doctor was also very supportive of his decision to take up Kung-Fu at his age, and he was encouraged to ‘go for it’. “I have a daughter

His prowess as a Kung Fu artist is quite impressive. So far, he has achieved his yellow sash and recently achieved his green sash after being tested by Sifu Keith, including breaking concrete tiles with a turning back kick and with a side kick, along with breaking a three inch concrete block with a slap. Sean now says his Kung Fu family are very supportive of his journey and helpful in anything he may be stuck on, from senior to lower grades, as they naturally will help anyone who comes through the door. He is determined to get his Black Belt by the time he reaches 75. With such a determined and positive attitude, there seems no stopping this inspirational man, who has suddenly found a new zest for life.

Another Special Event To Help Molly Following up on our story in last week’s edition of the County Leader on brave little Molly McNally from Balbriggan, many were touched as they learnt of her courageous journey they contacted us to see how they might help. With this in mind, we have been informed of another upcoming special fundraiser, in which all proceeds are going to help aid Molly’s cause. Molly (5) was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer last October. At the moment, the family need to raise €200,000 in order to get the little one to

By Jennifer McShane the United States for further, potentially life saving treatments, so every event is crucial, and every amount donated (no matter how big or small) will be hugely appreciated. Next up on the fundraising list, is a golfing event. A Golf Classic has been arranged in Malahide Golf Club on Thursday, June 26th between 10am and 4pm and according to Events co-ordinator of the Molly McNally Trust, Michelle, it is going to be a huge event. “So far, we have at least 30 teams arranged for the day,” she told the County Leader.

“We’re expecting a huge turnout of around 120 people and have so many sponsors organised, which is just fantastic, and of course, every cent raised is going to help Molly. We’ve been so touched by the wonderful response that we’ve received from so many around the

locality, and we are in the process of arranging many more fundraising events, which people can donate to if they wish.” Keep an eye on the coming editions of the County Leader for more details of future fundraising events as we get them. All support is so appreciated.

He was then brought back to the station where he was handed over to paramedics. The conditions at the time were calm with a force one southerly wind. Speaking to the County Leader after the call out, Joe May said: “He was a very lucky young man that the life ring was in working order and that someone acted quickly. We would advise people to swim close to shore and remember that there can be very strong tidal currents around our coast.”

This decision will be made in September, and as Tom said, “That would be the icing on the cake for Billy.” With such an impressive haul of medals, there is little doubt that this remarkable young man is certain to do his country proud, should he be fortunate enough to be selected for the team in September.

Tributes Paid To Retiring Donabate Principals By Jennifer McShane There were great celebrations in Donabate last week, as two well known school principals who share the same campus, both bid a fond farewell to their many years in Scoil Padraig Na Cailini and St Patrick’s BNS, as they retired from teaching. Principals Margaret O’Neill from Scoil Padraig Na Cailini and AnneMarie Hennigan from St Patrick’s BNS, were both recognised for their outstanding dedication to their Donabate schools, as tributes were paid to the teachers who have both been teaching for almost 40 years each. Both told the County Leader that they were

“surprised and overwhelmed” at the touching tributes paid to them. “I first started teaching at the girls school in 1974, and took up the role as principal 18 years later, so I’ve been there for almost 40 years if you can believe it!” said Margaret. “I’ve had a fantastic time over the years, but feel now that it’s time to move on. I’m both excited and nervous to see what the future holds, but will always look back on my time with so much happiness.” Anne-Marie from St Patrick’s BNS was equally emotional as she spoke to her friends, colleagues and students. “I’ve been so overwhelmed by the kindness shown to me,” she said. “I first came to the school in 1975, and it has been an absolute pleasure working with everyone over the years. I’m excited to venture into this new aspect of my life, and I’m still hoping to continue working with parents in the future,” she concluded.

A young Swords boy has made an incredible impact at the recent National Special Olympics in Limerick, where he was one of the outstanding performers at the event. Fourteen year old Billy Kane, who lives in Hawthorne Park in Swords, competed in the gymnastics competition, and he returned with an exceptional haul of six medals, five gold and one silver. His parents, Tom and Geraldine Kane were delighted with Billy’s success, and were

told the County Leader. “The local support we’ve received throughout the last number of months between the fundraising, to getting the children here has just been incredible, and everyone is so excited about their arrival.” “We know ourselves that taking the children out of their home environments for even short periods of time, has positive effects to their overall health; we’ve been told that there is a 30 to 50 per cent reduction in their radiation levels after their time here,” she explained. “We have so much planned for the children while they’re here, and I was over in Belarus myself just recently, and the kids were absolutely living for the trip.” “Of course, without the support and generosity of the communities around the North County, none of this would be possible, so I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped us in any way,” she concluded.

Scramble For Members By Cathal Boland June 24th is a big day in the EU Parliament’s calendar. Those wishing to form “Groups” must nominate their numbers by then. Each group must have a minimum of twenty five members drawn from across seven individual member states. There is a lot to play for. Each group receives funding, based on the level of membership, to assist their members in undertaking the duties as MEPs. Also the size of the group will determine the speaking order and more importantly, positions and chairs of committee. The EPP of which Fine Gael are members is still the largest group in the assembly. The SPD retain the second spot, to which Labour with no Irish MEPs are affiliated. It appears that the Alde Group of which Fianna Fail are members will move from the third largest group to fourth as the conservative grouping attract new national members and edge ahead. This change in rankings will not only have an impact on the internal

workings of the parliament, but may also ultimately play out in the shape and direction of the new commission and some of the key appointments which have yet to be made there. The jockeying for the top job as President of the Commission continues. There is a real battle playing out between parliament and the national governments as to who will be appointed. Juncker the EPP’s Spitzenkandidat (lead candidate) is seen by many as stale and too fixed in his ways to respond to a changing EU. It is said he favours continued centralisation of control and further expansion of the EU. To succeed in his current goal, he may have to commit to a some very real reforms and curtailment of his present budgetary policies. Once nominated, parliament will embrace him irrespective of policy as they will have won the day. The MEP’s will have triumphed, they have pushed the agenda that the Spitzenkandidat of the largest party should automatically be the nominee for the post. On examination of the MEPs elected the message from across Europe is loosen the purse strings, get money circulating, create employment and improve economic prosperity for the masses. So it seems your vote really did matter.

Flavours Of Fingal Show To Be Bigget Yet The countdown has started for the 2014 Flavours of Fingal County Show, which takes places on the 28th and 29th June in Newbridge House and Farm, Donabate.

By Patrick Finnegan This two day event will again host a mix of action packed foodie and farming attractions including; food stalls boasting locally produced delicacies, craft and baking demos. Attendees will this year get the chance to try their hand at sheep shearing and to witness geese herding first hand. The County Leader spoke exclusively with one of the people responsible for this annual show, Padraic McMahon, a local farmer and exhibitor from Fieldstown, beyond Rolestown. Looking forward to the show, he said, “A few years ago, a group of farmers in the local area came together, initially as a purchasing group, but we also decided that it would be great to let consumers know that there is farming going on in North County Dublin. We decided that the best way to inform people about this, was to have an agricultural show, as we were one of the only counties, not to have it’s own agricultural show.” The group then had a meeting with the County Council, and this was the genesis of the now very popular Flavours of Fingal show, which is now in it’s third year. Padraic explained, “It’s a mixture of food, cattle, sheep, equestrian, poultry and this year, we have involved a number of schools in an art competition, as well as a baking competition, which is open to anyone to enter,” he explained. The show is now getting bigger and

better each year, which delighted Padraic. “The first year we were novices, but it has now developed into a real country show. On Saturday, there will be a lot of pedigree cattle, as well as sheep, while Sunday will see young people bringing their animals to the show. Padraic runs his farm along with his wife, Bríd, and they sell lamb and turkeys directly to the consumer. He ended by saying, “We expect this to be the biggest show yet, but it all

depends on the weather. This show will highlight the wonderful products that the North County has to offer, and we are delighted to be in a position to showcase this to the people of the area, who may not know too much about agriculture, and it’s importance. We look forward to emphasising the difference between urban and rural Fingal,” he concluded.

Dublin Airport Welcomes Newfoundland Service Dublin Airport has welcomed the arrival of WestJet and its new service to St. John’s, Newfoundland in Canada. The launch of WestJet’s new flight to St. John’s Newfoundland, means that Dublin Airport now has up to four daily flights over the summer to three separate Canadian cities, which will make this year the busiest year ever for travel between Ireland and Canada.

“We are delighted to welcome WestJet’s first direct flight from St. John’s to Dublin,” said Kevin Toland, Chief Executive of the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA). “This is WestJet’s first transatlantic service, so we’re welcoming them to Europe, as well as to Ireland,” he added. “Given the strong connections between Ireland and Newfoundland, and the trade between Ireland and Canada, I

have no doubt that the new route will be very popular on both sides of the Atlantic for business and leisure passengers,” Toland said. The journey time between Dublin and St John’s is four hours 15 minutes and WestJet is operating the new route with a Boeing 737 aircraft which seats 136 passengers. As well as strong historical links, Canada and Ireland are also inter-twinned through business, with significant trade between the two. More than 60 Irish companies are based in Canada and about 80 Canadian companies are located in Ireland.

Lusk Group Confident Waste Plant Will Be Defeated

Fourth Green Flag Awarded To Swords School

The community response to the proposed Anaerobic Digester Waste Treatment facility at Regeens Lusk, has been emphatic and unequivocal, according to a spokesperson from Lusk Still Fighting Waste; the community group formed to oppose the development. “More than 626 people lodged an objection, the largest number of objectors the County Council has ever received to a single planning application,” said a spokesperson for the group. “Individuals, local farmers, local business people, community groups, public representatives, county councillors and TDs (including Minister for Health, James Reilly and local TD, Alan Farrell (FG)), have all voiced their opposition to the proposed plant.” The County Council will make a formal decision on the planning application within the next few weeks. The spokesperson for Lusk Still Fighting Waste declared the group is confident that planning officials in the Council will recognise the “unsuitability of the proposed site, will acknowledge the concerns of the community on the impact it would have on the extended local area, and will, in the final analysis, refuse permission.”

The staff and pupils at Gaelscoil Bhrian Boroimhe in Swords were very excited to be raising their 4th Green flag last week, with local Councillor Darragh Butler (FF), representing the County Mayor at the ceremony. Niamh Ní Ghrifín from the green schools committee told the County Leader about the hard work that went in to receiving their flag: “We were awarded this flag during a lovely celebration held by An Taisce in the Helix and are extremely proud of this achievement,” she said,

Imminent Closure Of Local Courthouses

Pictured here is Club Secretary of Swords Lions Marion Conneely, being presented with the Alan Bracklebank Trophy by Maurice Kealy (Club President).

Annual Fundraising Night For Swords Lions Swords and District Lions Club recently held its annual fundraising dinner night in Masterson’s Steakhouse in Swords. Funds raised help towards the club’s local projects, including BASE in Brackenstown, the co-located Fingal Counselling Service (FCS) and Fingal Bereaved by Suicide Support Service, Message in a Bottle - Emergency Information System and Senior Citizens Holiday in Trabolgan. The club is best known for its Christmas Food Appeal at local supermarkets. The annual Lion of the Year Award was presented to Marion Conneely, Club Secretary, who becomes the Lions Vice District Governor this July. In July 2015, she will become the first female District Governor for Lions Clubs in Ireland. The trophy is named in honour of Alan Brocklebank, a founder member, who passed away some years ago and was a well known optician in Swords. Two new members, Sean Quigley and Aisling Kenny were presented with their Lions Badges by Maurice Kealy (Club President). The club would like to thank Robbie Masterson and his excellent staff for the superb food and service, and helping to make for a most enjoyable night. The club always welcomes new members, and they meet on the second Monday and fourth Tuesday of each month at 8pm in the Maldron Airport Hotel.

The fear that the Courthouses in Swords and Balbriggan would be closed, as a cost cutting exercise, looks likely to become a reality. Should this happen, it will leave the North County without a court service, in what is the fastest growing population area in the entire Dublin region. What is even worse, is the fact that all court cases will now be conducted in Blanchardstown, where there is no public transport link from Balbriggan. At least, the city centre has a direct bus and train service from Balbriggan, as well as a bus service from Swords. The fact that the Swords and Balbriggan courthouses would be forced to close, would be an enormous blow to the communities in the North County. Many believe that it is absolutely outrageous that

staff would be expected to be reassigned an travel lengthy distances to access their jobs, and it is a great inconvenience to residents in the North County, to have to undertake substantial travel in order to

access court services which have long operated in our communities. The Courts Service, during 2013, undertook a review of court services. in the greater Dublin Area, which included Swords and

Balbriggan. The purpose of the review was to examine options to ensure that the Courts Service can continue to maintain an appropriate level of front line services to court users throughout Dublin city and county. This however, does not take into consideration the plight of local residents, who may have sensitive family law cases pending, or who rely on the protection of the courts in cases where barring orders are necessary, and where urgent action is needed. The upshot of this, is that it will necessitate taking two bus journeys to get to Blanchardstown, which will cause unnecessary financial and emotional strain on local families. This amounts to another reduction in the level of services in an area, where the exact opposite is needed.

Three Cups Lifted For Lusk United Lusk United would like to say a huge congratulations to three of their teams, after winning the cup competitions at their respective age level. The Under 9’s, managed by Trevor Russell, won the NDSL Dublin Port Cup beating Sportslink/Woodlawn in a penalty shootout after the match finished 1-1. Natasha Doyle’s Under 13’s beat Swords Celtic 3-1 to claim the NDSL Irish Rail Cup. Finally, the Senior team, managed by Aidan Wyer and Scott Learmounth, were crowned the Frank Roe Cup champions after a thrilling match, which saw them beat Belgard Athletic 4-2.

Q:

With the long aaited banking inquiry finally going ahead, we asked: ‘Has democracy been damaged by the Taoiseach’ interference in the make up of the banking inquiry membership?’

Amrit Sidhu

Barry Burke, Lusk Yes I do actually, I think he should have just left it. I think he’s just trying get something out of it just for himself and the rest of them, instead of looking after the people who are suffering. I don’t think he’s going about it the right way.

Summer Break For Malahide Musical Society

Aiden Arnold, Lusk In the long term, it hasn’t done them any good anyway. The government haven’t exactly shone through the whole incident. I think it shows us what they’ve done in a way, and our politicians can’t get much further than thinking where they’re going to score the next point.

Frank Kinsella, Swords I do absolutely yeah. It’s no longer a free inquiry to what happened to the banks. He’s to busy making it government policy, and putting his own slant on it. So we won’t get the truth.

Philip Lynch, Swords No. I think he’s right to add more of his own on the membership. Because it was Fianna Fáil’s mistake, they made a mess of things. So I don’t have a problem with it at all.

Paul Redmond, Swords Yes. The whole system needs to be changed, it’s corrupt. It shows just how it can all be orchestrated, when you get a committee that’s investigating fraud and corruption, and he can just put his own two people on it, it’s controlled. An investigation should be open and transparent.

Malahide Musical and Dramatic Society (MMDS) are currently taking a well earned break over the summer, but will be back in action again in September/early October. They will be seeking new members over 18 years old. The newly elected committee will then decide on their next production. They will also be seeking new members to help back stage/behind the scenes and especially anyone interested in set building or design or costumes. There are no auditions to join MMDS and once you join, you are automatically part of the ‘chorus’. Auditions are held for leading roles. The group hope to see plenty of new faces in September.

Outdoor Water Safety Week In Skerries Skerries outdoor Water Safety Week will take place on Sunday 27th July to Saturday, 2nd August. Registration for the event takes place 1st to 11th July. There will be Swimming and Lifesaving lessons for ages 4-18.

Ann Marie Doran, Swords Yes. If they’re going to finally bother doing an inquiry this late into it, the least it has to be is independent.

John O’Sullivan, Cork What he’s claiming to do is re-establish the balance that the government have on the inquiry. It looks like they didn’t manage themselves correctly, and didn’t have the correct members to be able to cover the holes. So it look like they’ve messed up and now are trying to recover the situation using underhand tactics.

Patrick O’Brien, Swords Absolutely yes. He’s made a mess of it. They’re trying to dictate what the outcome will be. I now have even less faith than I did have in the government before, he’s an incompetent fool.

Marian Walker, Swords No I think everyone should be included. We got into this mess with the last government so no I think everything’s grand.

Anna Grobrer, Swords Yeah I do, because I think the inquiry should be independent, it seems like his intentions are biased.

Marie O’Reilly, Swords Yes I think it is. I just don’t think the government are doing enough at the moment.

Laurence Corcoran, Swords No because it was always predestined anyway. There was always going to be a majority and there was always going to be the right outcome for the system, so we’re never going to get the full truth, but we’re going to get what we consider to be the truth.

Al O’Neill, Swords No. I don’t think it has been damaged at all. It’s his job to be doing what he’s doing in my opinion, and this is what he should be doing. If more people went out there and do what he’s been doing, the place wouldn’t be in the state it’s in.

Her pen and ink cityscapes capture Georgian Dublin and her landscapes and seascapes portray the coastlines of the North County, Portrane in particular. She is perhaps best known for her still life works in oil. Taking inspiration from Vermeer and Chardin, she uses rich colours to add life and dimension to her paintings, and makes them highly sought after pieces in auction houses all over Ireland.

The Senior Citizen Centre in Swords always has a vast array of entertaining and significant events and activities for its members. Every week they have games such as bingo, bridge and darts; arts and crafts, for example knitting, card and jewellery making; a music

The thought of needing a solicitor can sound very serious indeed, and can fill most people with trepidation. However, usually solicitors are the complete opposite. In most cases, they make dealing with a legal matter simple, and much easier than dealing with it alone. Solicitors are trained professionals to help you with any legal case, no matter how complicated or confusing. Sometimes, law firms may be specified to deal with certain cases, and if it’s not what you require, they may be able to advise you about which firm can help you. Going through a solicitor to help you with your case can offer so much help and support, and save you from any complications and inconveniences further down the line. There may be a slight fee, sometimes these costs

can be estimated and explained to you over the phone. However, in the end you will find the benefits outweigh the costs in terms of future expenses, time and hassle. Usually, with personal injury claims, you may find some solicitors work on what they call a ‘no win, no fee’ basis, where they won’t charge you for your case, unless you win. Certain things are good for the internet, but definitely not the law. Legal matters are lengthy and complex to deal with, so it’s best to head straight to the professionals. So for any DIY people out there, we suggest if you’re looking for someone to represent you in a dispute, property sales, or with your will, meeting with your local solicitor is your best chance of ensuring the matter is dealt with properly.

a rappor t with their customers, who return time after time, to avail of the excellent meat products, at the keenest prices around. This, allied to a superb customer service and friendly banter, is a definite recipe for success. Kevin Gleeson explained the reasons for the success of Gleesons Butchers. “Our experience is key, we have a background in farming, and this gives us the knowledge in sourcing our product. Our opera-

tion is based on traditional butchery skills, and we hand pick our beef & lamb weekly in Moyvalley Meats in Enfield Co. Meath. Over the years, we have developed a great working relationship with them, and this gives us complete traceability of our meat, and this is hugely important to us,” he said. Kevin went on to explain that the modern design of the shops has resulted in a more customer friendly, open plan layout. This makes the store more accessible to our customers, where they are more encouraged to browse and engage with the butchers who are only too willing to come out on the floor and interact in an old-fashioned way. “Our Millfield manager, Dino is likely to know our customers on a personal level, and this is important to us. Personal service is vital for our business.”

“All the pre-pack products are produced fresh in the shops on a daily basis, and this is quite unique to Gleesons. Many customers may have par ticular requirements, which we are glad to facilitate. We have the versatility to change to our customers’ needs,” said Kevin. Customers can avail of a great variety of meat products at Gleesons Butchers including veal , venison , goose or guinea fowl etc. with free range or organic options available to order. There are also a number of excellent specials on display, including 3 trays for €10 and 7 for €20 specials. They also do an excellent high protein low fat option at the same great prices. These qualities are destined to ensure that Gleesons Butchers enjoys a long and successful time serving the meat requirements of local shoppers, not only in Balbriggan, but further afield. Another example of the great job that Gleeson Butchers are doing, is the fact that they are finalists in the 98FM ‘Best of Dublin Award’, in the category of ‘Best Butcher. This is where the top five butchers in Dublin have been nominated for the award. The result will be announced later this week, and we wish them the best of luck. The shop is open Monday to Wednesday from 9am to 7pm, and Thursday and Friday from 9am to 9pm, Saturday from 9am to 6pm and Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

Generally traffic to Dublin Airport is on the up, as Dublin Airport has handled almost eight million passengers in the first five months of this year, a seven per cent increase on the same period in 2013. Meanwhile, National Geographic opened

its first Irish store on the shopping street in The Loop, at Dublin Airport’s Terminal 1 this week. The colourful store features a wide range of National Geographic’s awardwinning books and magazines as well stationery, maps globes, luggage, clothing, accessories and children’s products. “The National Geographic Society has been inspiring people to care about the planet for over

Newman Praise For New Swords Signs Swords councillor, Joe Newman (NP) has praised the County Council for updating it’s new signage at the approach roundabouts in Swords. He told the County Leader, “The previous green signs at the Pinnock Hill, Malahide Road and Estuary roundabouts had become dilapidated and hard to read for tourists. The new signs are bright and clear and will be of great help for tourists and locals alike. They will also act as a source of pride for local residents. The Council have also done a great job in putting colourful plants here, which will brighten up the place no end. Newman also congratulated Swords Tidy Towns volunteers, who are out every evening and at weekends, making sure that the area

Special Community Exhibition In Swords Last Wednesday saw the County Council offices in Swords host a very special presentation. The North Dublin City and County Regional Drugs Task Force has been working with some 50 young people in the Swords area and artist John Duggan to create the exhibition, which was entitled: ‘All That’s Good in Our Community.’ Much preparation and effort went into the

work of the exhibition, which took three months to put together, which culminated in this special event at the Council’s Head Office. In attendance were representatives of The North Dublin City and County Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force, senior members of An Garda Síochána, Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board, Crosscare, and Swords/Baldoyle Youth Services. Deputy

Mayor, Councillor Ted Leddy and County Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid. Manager of Swords/Baldoyle Youth Services Michael Daly, spoke to the County Leader: “This is a great event for us and a great, positive achievement for all the young people who took part. We’re proud of them and they can be very proud of themselves for all their hard work and artistic endeavours. It’s brilliant,” he said.

No Reduction In Special Needs Assistants For Local Schools - Farrell Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG), has stated that he is pleased with the confirmation by Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn that the number of Special Needs Assistants in schools around the North County will not be reduced. “Minister Quinn has confirmed that this is no question of reduction the number of Special Needs Assistants in our school system,” Farrell told the County Leader. “In fact, the current Government has maintained and increased the resources which are spent on children with special needs. As part of this, we have increased the number of Special Needs Assistants in

schools to the highest level yet, and another 390 positions were announced last December.” “I wish to clarify that Special Needs Assistants will not be removed from local students who need their help at any level in the local school system. They will be available from junior infants through until the completion of secondary school,” he continued. “A recent circular from the Department of Education on the Special Needs Assistants scheme has, in some cases, been misinterpreted, so the Department has tasked the National Council for Special Education with developing a booklet for parents, outlining the provisions of the recent circular which will answer any questions which parents may have and put their fears to rest,” Farrell concluded.

Deadly Denims

Top Comedian For Naul Venue

Tropical prints, bright and bold colours and textured fabrics are just some of the highlights of the Tesco summer 2014 F&F collection. The label’s striking, ontrend range is now available in selected Tesco stores around the North County. To keep it cool and casual this summer, why not go for a new take on denim – match coloured denims, with casual accessories – shirts, jackets, blazers and more. Dungarees are also back, as a nice casual outfit or a beach cover-up. Be pretty in denim, in a dainty denim dress or dare to double denim!

Lol, the monthly comedy club at The Séamus Ennis Centre, is continuing its run of bringing top class comedians to the North County venue. The news that PJ Gallagher is headlining the event on Friday June 27th, joined by Republic of Telly’s Kevin Mc Gahern, is sure to generate great interest in the event.

Rás Organiser Praises Skerries Crowds It wasn’t long ago that the peloton worked their way to the final stage finish of the An Post Rás in Skerries. Race organiser, Tony Campbell has delivered a message of “thanks” for the overwhelming support that the riders received along the route, and in Skerries town. “The support that the race receives in Skerries, is nothing short of phenomenal. As soon as the riders enter Skerries there are crowds and crowds of people just cheering them on and it gives them such a lift after a long eight days in the saddle.

There’s only one place to watch the World Cup...

Every year I tell the teams and the riders, ‘wait until you see Skerries’ and the locals never disappoint. I’d just like to thank the Skerries locals and all the organisers and volunteers for doing such a wonderful job. They really made it an incredible final stage,” he told the County Leader. After eight gruelling days around Ireland of top class racing, it was the shy, unassuming Austrian rider, Clemens Fankhauser who took the honour of being crowned 2014 An Post Rás champion. Fankhauser was also full of praise for the Skerries crowd who turned out to cheer on the peloton. “The atmosphere in Skerries for the final stage was amazing. I have raced all over the world, but I don’t think anything compares to the reception I received when I lifted the trophy,” he said.

PJ is best known from his appearances on Naked Camera, RTE’s hidden camera show, in which his characters, Jake Stevens and ‘Dirty Aul Wan’ confused and bemused the subject of his attentions, much to the delight of viewers. A seasoned performer on the live circuit, PJ regularly sells out shows wherever he plays. He will be joined by Kevin McGahern, the newest recruit on RTE’s satirical weekly show, ‘Republic of Telly’. Kevin is currently on a comedy tour of Ireland with ‘Lads of Comedy’ along with Ronan Grace (RTE New Comedy awards) who is also appearing on the night. The show will be MC’d as usual by Gearoid Farrelly, who will be setting the pace with his own brand of irreverent humour.

HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS

Jan 20 - Feb 18

For some time you’ve been juggling obligations involving everything from career and family to long-term security. As the week begins, sudden shifts in circumstances take over, and force an extensive review - for the better.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20

You begin the week thinking that you’ve once again been cornered into a situation in which you just don’t want to be. But events mark a turning point for everyone - even changes in circumstances for some.

Car Seat Safety Experts In Lusk Parents from around the North County are being urged to have their child’s car seat checked as research from the Road Safety Authority (RSA) shows that three out of four child car seats are incorrectly fitted. The purpose of the ‘Check it Fits’ Service is to check child car seats and restraints and to show parents, grandparents and guardians how to make sure their child is safe in the car. If a child car seat isn’t fitted correctly, it could lead to a serious or fatal injury in the event of a collision, and so incorrectly fitted child car seats are a significant cause for concern for parents, grandparents and guardians who travel with children. To highlight the issue of child safety in cars around the locality, the service team of child car seat installation experts will check child

car seats and restraints to ensure they are correctly fitted in Supervalu in Lusk on Saturday, 12th July from 10am to 5.30pm. If your child’s car seat or restraint is incorrectly fitted, they will advise on how to fix the problem, demonstrate how to fit the restraint correctly and answer any queries participants might have. The whole process shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes, is completely free of charge, and will give parents and guardians the peace of mind that their child is safe and secure in your car. Commenting on the upcoming ‘Check it Fits’ Service visit to Lusk, Moyagh Murdock, CEO, RSA said: “This service will help to keep our youngest and most vulnerable road users safe on our roads. It is really important that parents, grandparents and guardians are aware that their child car restraints may currently be ineffective in preventing serious injury or death simply because they are not fitted correctly.”

While you can’t stop thinking this week, try to suspend making judgements until after Wednesday - and use the time to explore all options. Others may complain, but now is the time to think of yourself first.

May 21 - Jun 20

You have high standards and, if you feel that you’ve fallen short in any area, you can be hard on yourself. However, this is a week to turn aside all self-doubts and wallow in the overwhelming ideas or offers which come.

Farrell Welcomes Changes To Garda Penalty System Local TD and Member of the Oireachtas Committee for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Farrell (FG), has welcomed changes to the operation of the Garda Fixed Charge Penalty System (FCPS). “Changes announced to the FCPS not only make life easier for the general public, but they also shed a bright light on an important Garda process, in turn restoring confidence in Garda operations. “These changes mean that the system will be centralised at the Fixed Charge Processing Office in Thurles, a clear guide on how the

Jun 21 - Jul 22

system works will be available online, cancellation requests can be made on a form accessible from the Garda website and there will be regular audits,” he told the County Leader. “The FCPS is a system that affects a huge number of people around the North County and beyond. It is probably the most common way most of us interact with an Garda Síochana and so it is vital that all communication is clear and transparent.” “On-going changes are being made following the Garda Inspectorate’s report into the FCPS to improve the effectiveness and transparency of the process. The changes announced are undoubtedly a positive step forward,” Farrell concluded.

By now you’ve become accustomed to making decisions, only to have them swept aside by sudden changes in circumstances or others’ whims. You can now begin to relax, for all this is about to change for the better.

Back To School Clothing Allowance Available Local deputy, Alan Farrell (FG) has encouraged parents to apply for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, which opened this week for online applications. He told the County Leader, “Back to school time each year can place extra pressure on families who are already struggling to make ends meet. The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance helps with the large costs of preparing children for their return to school. It can ease the levels of stress that parents often face at this time by meeting the cost of uniforms and school shoes.”

“I am glad that the allowance will be automatically approved for those families who have previously qualified and meet the criteria again this year. Those low-income families, who have automatically qualified will receive a letter outlining how and when their allowance will be paid. Removing the need for these families to reapply, will not only reduce unnecessary stress for them, but it will allow for a more streamlined system to deal with new applications,” he said. “I urge all parents who may be in need of this assistance to apply. The online application form is available at www.welfare.ie and application forms will also be available in your local Social Welfare or Intreo Office. The deadline for applications is the 30th September 2014,” concluded Farrell.

Call To Nominate Local Pharmacists For Award Healthcare software solutions company, Helix Health - which sponsors the annual Pharmacist Awards are calling on the people of the North County to nominate local pharmacists in the ‘Patient Nominated’ category ahead of the 2014 Pharmacist Awards. The call for North County residents to nominate their local pharmacists comes as the results of a recent survey were released, which focused on the issues concerning pharmacists throughout the country. The results revealed that 86 per cent of pharmacists surveyed believe government cutbacks have directly impacted on their ability to look after patients. Commenting on the results, David Graham from Helix Health, said: “The

Helix Health Pharmacist Awards are run every year, not only to acknowledge the work and dedication of local pharmacists, but also to raise muchneeded funds for the Pharmacy Benevolent Fund. “From looking at the results of our survey, it is clear that the Fund is needed now more than ever.
