Local councillor, Duncan Smith (Lab) is calling on the County Council to provide funding for a municipal local authority run swimming pool for Swords.

“What brought this to my attention was when I recently discovered that there is actually a Central Government grant of upwards of €3.8 million for the provision or refurbishment of either new pools or existing pools.” Smith continued, “My question to the Council was why By Patrick Finnegan have we not applied for this? We have areas zoned for community infrastructure and the Council has built He told the County Leader, “Community swimming pools excellent community centres. Report Published Into Airport Jet Blast Incident The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) has published a report into an incident at Dublin Airport, where two workers were blown over and injured as a result of a jet blast. The incident happened last November, when a Ryanair Boeing 737 was manoeuvring onto its parking stand. The workers were working on site and when the aircraft turned they were blown backwards by the jet blast. Initially, it was thought one of the men was seriously injured. Both were taken to hospital, but it later emerged that neither had suffered any fractures, although both had sustained bruising. In its report into the incident, the AAIU said it would have been prudent to ensure minimum thrust was used or to consider restarting the second engine or using a tug to manoeuvre the aircraft onto its stand. The investigation noted the steps taken by Ryanair to reinforce the safety message around jet blast and to ensure that single engine taxi-in procedures are not employed when parking on stands adjacent to the work site. The investigation also noted the procedural changes which the DAA had since introduced.

Record Traffic in Irish Airspace Figures released by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) indicate that 2016 is on course to be a very strong year for air traffic in Irish airspace. The amount of traffic safely handled by air traffic control climbed by 7.4 per cent in August to 107,895 flights, compared to the same month in 2015. This brings total air traffic handled by the IAA from January-August 2016 to 745,744, up 9.1 per cent against the same period in 2015. Traffic in all areas grew during the month and exceeds previous peak levels last recorded in 2008. Eamonn Brennan, Chief Executive of the IAA said, “We are delighted with these figures. We continue to see strong growth on transatlantic routes handled safely by our air traffic controllers. All the State airports performed very well with Cork and Shannon reporting great results. Dublin, which accounts for 84 per cent of the total State airport traffic grew 9.6 per cent in August and has grown by nearly 10 per cent in total so far this year, with over 140,000 movements. This is a very strong indicator of our economic recovery – 2016 looks set to be a record year for air traffic across Ireland.”

Inspirational Cian An Example To All Remarkable Swords golfer, Cian Arthurs, who is a member of Roganstown Golf Club has been selected to play on the European team, in the Flightmasters Trophy 2016 taking place in California later this week. The team flew out last Sunday amid great expectations of success. The Flightmasters Trophy is for one-armed golfers and is played just like the Ryder Cup every two years between Europe and the USA. This year’s competition is eagerly anticipated and 24 yearold Cian, who plays off six handicap told the County Leader about how his involvement with the team developed. “There are three Irish players on the team and I’m the only one from Dublin. My game is good at the moment and we have a strong team going into the event, so we’re hopeful of repeating our great success of two years ago in Scotland,” said a determined Cian,

who was a member of that victorious team and won all five of his matches.

By Patrick Finnegan Cian explained about the accident that caused him to lose his right arm. He said, “I lost my right arm in a lawnmower accident when I was just two year old. From then on I had to adapt to using my left hand. I took up golf, as my brother, Eoin Arthurs is one of Ireland’s best amateurs over the past few years and has won the coveted East of Ireland title, among others. I always looked up to him and I took up golf as a result. Cian is an inspirational young man and an example to anyone who feels they cannot do something. “I like to try to do things that people say I couldn’t do, just to prove them wrong. I played in the World Championship earlier this year and I reached the quarter final, being beaten by the eventual runner-up.” Inspirational Cian, who

can drive the golf ball as far and as accurately as any of the top players is an example to people who feel they can’t achieve their goals. “I always believe that if you put your mind to something and try hard enough, you can achieve anything. You just need to stay positive and never think that you won’t or you can’t, always think that I can and I will,” he said.

Anger As Local Motorists To Face Additional Toll Charges The recent judgement by the European Court of Justice that a VAT rate of 23 per cent should be applied to state run tolls, including the M50 and the Port Tunnel has been condemned by a local TD. This ruling would mean that people from the North County travelling to the west, south and south east of the country will be adversely affected, compared with residents of the southside, who can access these areas without having to pay a toll. This further empha-

sises the growing rift between transport services in both areas.

By Patrick Finnegan Local Fianna Fáil TD, Darragh O’Brien has said that the financial ability of North County Dublin road users, especially commuters must be taken into account before any attempt is made to impose VAT on toll charges on the M50 or Dublin Port Tunnel. The European Court of Justice have recently suggested toll operators charge 23 per cent VAT on state-owned tolls, including the

Bridge Clubs Combine For Skerries RNLI Holmpatrick Bridge Club, John Lane Bridge Club and Skerries Bridge Club came together recently to hold a fundraiser in memory of the late Dr. John Keane, raising the huge sum of €4,500 for Skerries RNLI. Dr. Keane who passed away earlier this year was Honorary Medical Officer to Skerries RNLI for more than 20 years

The previous Government’s Capital Infrastructure Plan failed to deliver anything to this constituency in terms of improving our poor public transport infrastructure.” “The level of under-investment in developing an efficient and appropriate public transport network in North County Dublin over the last five years is irresponsible in the extreme and cannot continue. “North County Dublin is the fastest-growing area in the country, thousands in our commu-

Speaking at the cheque presentation, Sam Shiels, Chairman of Skerries RNLI said “Dr. John Keane played a very important role when the lifeboat station was reopened in 1981 agreeing to become Honorary Medical Officer. He stayed involved with station for more than 20 years and was very good to our volunteers and extremely generous with his time. Whether it be an end of year work party or a friendly festive gettogether there are

many reasons that September is the month to get the ball rolling putting details in place.

without delay and you’ll guarantee yourself many more attendees.

BOOK THE VENUE DECIDE ON A DATE The first point to put in place is the date. The earlier this is set in stone the better, as at the busiest time of the year people tend to have fairly full diaries. So make that date official

The venue is arguably of topmost priority for a successful bash and therefore you can expect them to get booked up pretty fast! Also, if you book at this earlier stage you are much more likely to discover that lots of early bird offers are available. There are many wonderful venues in North County Dublin that would provide the ideal reception and facilities for an inexhaustible range of party criteria.

SET THE BUDGET

CHRISTMAS CHEER HILTON STYLE

Find out what kind of budget you have, and this will determine many of your options, such as what kind of venue you can choose, to how much you can set aside for food, and so on. Ask about the budget and stick to it. So many places around the North County offer true value for money, so be sure to look at all the options before making your choice.

PICK A THEME

Christmas Lunch - €20 per person Daily throughout December

Another quirky idea to make your Christmas Party stand out is to pick a theme and centre everything around that. It’s bound to be good fun and will truly make for a Christmas party with a difference. Also, there are endless amounts of ‘themed’ ideas you could go for, and it doesn’t have to be a festive one. Why not go for a ‘Summer Fun at Christmas’ theme? The possibilities are endless!

A Christmas party is most definitely an opportunity to let your hair down and show your colleagues and friends what

you’re made of on the dance floor. It is imperative for an event like this to have well known, universally loved floor fillers on the playlist. Whether the venue provides the music, or you provide it yourself, don’t leave the tunes to chance.

DON’T FORGET THE FOOD There are many options when it comes to food. If you’re planning on having a sit down meal, then do not hesitate to book a table, especially for larger parties. Also, it is always worth enquiring whether there are group discounts or seasonal offers available. You’re spoilt for choice here in the North County, as there are so many wonderful venues right outside your doorstep. If you’re making the food yourself, plan it as much as possible in advance and take advantage of the fantastic offers that will be on in your local supermarket.

SECRET SANTA Be it among work colleagues or friends, the ‘Secret Santa’ exchange is a great

way to ensure everybody receives a gift as well as cut down costs at this pursetightening time of year. This is well worth organising in the next couple of weeks as it can be one less present to buy in December and it allows you more time to discover something thoughtful and fitting for your recipient.

DRESS FOR A PARTY This can quite arguably be left until closer to the night.

However, do not leave it so close that you’re left in a panic fifteen minutes before you need to leave. Given the time of year, you don’t have to spend a fortune on a new outfit, the local fashion stores and shopping centres will have plenty of stylish bargains for you to choose from, and at a great price too. Make sure it’s flattering and you feel comfortable in it, perhaps with the knack of concealing that extra mince pie or two.

PUT YOUR FEET UP Hopefully, these tips are useful pieces of advice to help make this time of year more manageable and laid back. Don’t forget amid all the preparations that this time of the year is about celebration, giving and spending time with loved ones. So make sure you e n j o y yourself and find some time to relax and put your feet up. You deserve it.

Juncker’s State Of Union Address John Claude Juncker delivered his state of the union address last week at the Parliament’s Plenary session held in Strasbourg. In the course of Juncker’s speech, he set out his desire for the development of an EU military response capability. He said “Over the last decade, we have engaged in over 30 civilian and military EU missions from Africa to Afghanistan. But without a permanent structure we cannot act effectively. It is time we had a single headquarters for these operations.” He added, “We should also move towards common military assets, in some cases, owned by the EU - and, of course, in full complementarity with NATO.” But a number of countries, particularly Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are quite critical of any proposal which may be seen to undermine NATO. Their view appears to be that this is no time to, in effect, compete with NATO as Russia is seen to be in aggressive mode. Juncker did not address the TTIP or CETA trade agreements during his address. Both are still edging closer to decision time. The anti TTIP

Successful Fledging Of Red Kites Need Assistance With This summer the Golden Eagle Trust are overjoyed to announce the confirmed successful fledging of young red kites in North County Dublin. Two nests are now confirmed to have fledged a total of three chicks in 2016. The Golden Eagle Trust (GET), along with project partners National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Welsh Kite Trust brought back red kites to Ireland between 2007 and 2011. The Fingal Red Kite release programme was part of the final and fifth year of an ambitious project to re-establish Red Kites in Ireland. The County Council and a private landowner hosted and facilitated the two separate release cages. In 2011, the final batch of 53 red kites were released and saw these graceful raptors released including at these strategic locations in the North County. The sites were located half way between the initial red kite release locations in Co. Wicklow and Co. Down. Dr Marc Ruddock, Red Kite Project Manager for GET said “This project was aimed to maximise the final year of the reintroduction and to help establish a contiguous east coast All-Ireland red kite population. We know this year that there are now Fingal kites known to be breeding in Co. Down and Co. Wicklow and both Northern Ireland and Wicklow kites are also recorded in Fingal, so we are buoyant that the reintroduction can be considered a remarkable success in Ireland,” he said. Monitoring of the red kites has been undertaken since kites were released July 2011, but unfortunately the project was beset with unexpected losses in the first 12 months with 10 kites that were confirmed dead during radio-tracking. Mr Hans Visser, Biodiversity Officer for Fingal County Council said “The last time we had red kites breeding in North County Dublin would have been more than a century ago, so this is a

Buying a car is a big investment by any standard and needs to be given careful consideration before proceeding. Many people prefer to buy a good quality second hand car than investing thousands on a brand new car, that depreciates rapidly the

Time To Trade Up? If you buy a secondhand car from a dealer you have rights under consumer law. The car should be of merchantable quality – this means that it should be of reasonable, acceptable quality given the age, cost and history of the car; it should be fit for the purpose intended and roadworthy. It should also match the description of the car given verbally or in the advertisement. It is very important to know, however, that if you bought the car from a private seller, you do not have the same consumer rights because the person selling the car is not selling it as a trader. When buying from another consumer you should always get the car independently checked by a mechanic, as you may not be able to rely on the answers provided by a private seller.

Buying from a reputable car dealer provides the safest and most reliable way to make sure that if something goes wrong, then you can always return and your problem will

Malahide Coffee Morning For Ross Nugent Foundation A very well supported Coffee Morning was held at Worrell’s Expert on Main St, Malahide last Friday in aid of the Ross Nugent Foundation. Ross was a very popular 18 year-old lad, who attended Malahide Community School, but sadly lost his brave battle against cancer six years ago. The day was the idea of Worrell’s Store Manager, Claire Matthews and it is set to become an annual event. Ross’s parents, Don and Sandra, who were in attendance, set up the Ross Nugent Foundation shortly after his death. It came about after Ross’s mother Sandra made a promise to Ross to raise funds to purchase a blood pressure monitor for St Clare’s Oncology Ward at Beaumont Hospital. Ross was conscious of the lack of facilities at the hospital for cancer patients and their families. So far, the Ross Nugent

Foundation has supplied 22 Bionic Therapy Chairs which cost €5,500 a piece, each of which are fitted with individual TV monitors. Other items supplied by the foundation include, electric beds, chair beds, foot stools, wheelchairs, physiotherapy equipment among others. The crowning glory was the setting up of a special room, called

The Glade in the Oncology Day Ward, which makes life much more comfortable for patients. Ross’s father, Don Nugent was delighted that Worrell’s decided to host this fundraising Coffee Morning. He told the County Leader, “Claire rang us to say she had an idea for a Coffee Morning. It is so appropriate that it was held in Malahide, where

Ross lived and we’re delighted with it. It’s a wonderful gesture by Worrell’s and the large amount of people who attended shows the wonderful community spirit of the people of Malahide. All of our workers are volunteers, and we thank them all , as well as the local shops who have been very supportive of us in the past six years,” he said.

Mick Pender, FAI Fingal Community Development Officer dropped by to offer challenges to the boys and he told the County Leader, “From my dealings with the teachers here at Colaiste Choilm, especially with Sinead, I think this is a fantastic idea. Anything that promotes fitness within the school is very beneficial. The teachers here do a great job with physical education for the boys and long may it continue,” he said.

National Fitness Day, as part of Be Active Week was celebrated in style at Colaiste Choilm Secondary School, Swords where students dressed in their favourite football jerseys and challenged teachers to skills competitions. PE teacher, Sinead Hynes explained to the County Leader the idea behind this novel concept. “Pupils took on the teachers where classes come out to the yard or football pitch at random and challenge them to games of basketball, skipping, sit ups, penalty shoot-outs etc,” she said. These challenges were made at any time during the day and second years even fancied their chances against transition year students, such was the nature of the event. Residents’ Demands Ignored At the full Council meeting last week at County Hall, Swords a new format was proposed and voted on for the controversial modular housing project to be located beside Pinewood Green estate in Balbriggan. The decision was to proceed with the access road to the

Cllr Tony Murphy (NP) who has been an avid supporter of the residents of Pinewood, told the County Leader, “The meeting was attended by many of the concerned residents to see if councillors could reach a decision in sympathy with issues that are adversely about to affect their quality of life.” These houses will cause a material change to the

infrastructure in Pinewood and is going to change the environs in which people live there,” he said. “This proposal is going to open up a road infrastructure that is going to be very negative for that area. I’m very annoyed and disappointed that the local authority didn’t consider the fact that a dedicated road infrastructure was clearly justified to service the 25 modular houses in this situation. It has been overlooked because of financial reasons, at the expense of the residents of Pinewood estate and also at the expense of the

people of Balbriggan. The Council are determined to use Pinewood as an access route, heightening safety concerns in the area.” he said. Local Sinn Fein councillor, Malachy Quinn said, “We share the concerns of Pinewood Residents Association in relation to the accessibility of the site, which resulted in me putting down an emergency motion at last Monday’s monthly Council meeting calling for “all future development of the Pinewood and Castleland sites not to proceed until the completion of the Skerries Link Road.” “I would call upon the Council to make good their announcement that they will begin the preplanning process for the link road and would insist that this would happen in conjunction with the proposed development, while being mindful of the ongoing housing crisis in Balbriggan, with families contacting myself on a daily basis. Deputy Louise O’Reilly and I will be engaging with both the council and the Dept of Environment in regards to the completion of the Skerries Link Road.” Cllr Grainne Maguire was also disappointed with the outcome. She said, “Having worked with the Pinewood Residents Association over the last couple of months regarding the proposed rapid build housing proposal I saw first hand the great community engagement that took place, the public meeting etc. The community came together to submit their observations in relation to these proposals and I was disappointed that none of the major concerns were addressed.” “The fact that the council stated that the additional 25 houses will have “no significant impact on Pinewood estate” when there is already a serious traffic issue especially around the junction at the school. The development of these houses, along with the proposed further developments on these lands give major cause for concern.” She concluded by saying, “Whilst I appreciate the need for additional housing, I could not support this proposal without the Castlelands link road being completed prior to any development. I will continue to work with the Pinewood Residents association to put pressure on the Council to honour this commitment so that the access points through Pinewood will be closed on completion of the link road,” she said.

National Women in Business Event Launched Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor has launched the full programme of events to mark the 10th annual National Women’s Enterprise Day (NWED), which is being organised by the Local Enterprise Offices on Wednesday, October 19th 2016. The biggest of the National events occurring for NWED is being hosted by Fingal Local Enterprise Office at the Radisson Blu Hotel Dublin Airport. Hundreds of successful Irish female entrepreneurs are expected to attend, which the organisers hope will encourage more women across the region to access enterprise supports for starting or growing a business. Minister of State for Employment and Small Business, Pat Breen will attend the local event, which is hosted by RTÉ’s Keelin Shanley. A panel of entrepreneurs including Caroline Keeling (Chief Executive of Keelings) will talk

about their own personal experience. Head of Fingal Local Enterprise Office, Oisín Geoghegan said: “Through financial assistance, microfinance loans, mentoring, training and networking, the Local Enterprise Offices in Local Authorities supported 1,000 more female-run enterprises last year, compared with 2014. There is a wide range of enterprise supports on offer and so we’re encouraging aspiring entrepreneurs and existing business owners to find out about those supports at the regional event on National Women’s Enterprise Day.” Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid said “I am delighted to welcome the NWED Dublin event to Fingal this October. Our entrepreneurs are recognised nationally and indeed internationally in the business world, for their innovation and business acumen, with this event particularly highlighting the experience of Women in business. Through LEO Fingal, we continue to provide support and mentoring to all prospective and existing business owners. This will help make our county a fantastic place to do business.”

Old IRA Remembers Last Wednesday, Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society held two commemorative events. The first was a parade to the old graveyard in St. Margaret’s where a wreath was laid to commemorate the men and women of the area who had taken an active part in Easter Week and the subsequent War of independence. Swords man, Brian Lally read the Proclamation. County Mayor Darragh Butler spoke praising the Society for their work

over the past 70 years and particularly in their dignified contribution during this special year of remembrance. Local Parish Priest, Gabriel O’Dowd said a few words of reflection which were warmly received by the many attendees. The Society then proceeded to Oldtown, where an event, dedicated to commemorate the Fingal women of Easter Week was held. The wreath was laid by long serving Officers of the Society, Paul O’Brien and Peatsie O’Connell, nephew of Peter Wilson, who was

killed during Easter Week. Balbriggan native, Orla Dalton gave a fine reading of the Proclamation which she did with passion and commitment. It was great to see Una O’Brien back in action after her recent illness. She delivered a fitting tribute to the women who contributed so much in supporting the Fingal Volunteers. Una has another book in publication titled, “A Life Less Ordinary” which is a collection of essays on some of the participants in the campaign here in the North County.
