Local Festivals Boost Tourism Despite some poor weather conditions, this summer is proving to be one of the most memorable on record for residents and tourists alike all across the North County. Highly acclaimed festivals were a major feature and they proved to be a real attraction for both locals and visitors alike. Stakeholders including the County Council, local Chambers of Commerce, Fingal Tourism and representatives of the local hospitality sector, all deserve great credit for their vision and foresight in attracting more tourists than ever to the region.

Practically every town and village in the North County has made great strides to ensure that visitors and residents have reaped the benefits of the area. Excellent festivals like Flavours of Fingal, which took place in July last have played a major role in attracting visitors to the area. Indeed it was heartening to discover the amount of families from outside the county who see this as a must visit event. The new Swords festival was an outstanding success in ensuring that the town is now becoming a tourist destination in its own right. The opening of Swords castle to the public has been instrumental in this. A further indication of this welcome trend is evidenced by the amount of top quality restaurants that are springing up in the town, offering tourists and locals a wide choice of affordable international cuisine. The fact that Swords is in pole position to receive a Purple Flag, which is granted to towns with exceptional night-time entertainment and hospitality facilities is a great boost. The hope is that the Purple Flag will be a common sight in all of North County towns soon. It is clear that, with imaginative direction and determination by many of the stakeholders, particularly the County Council, there is no reason that the North County cannot emulate the likes of Galway and have festivals all summer long, the length and breadth of the county, from Balbriggan to Howth. Earlier in the year, the Balbriggan Summerfest once again was a resounding success and is instrumental in showcasing the many fine attractions that the town has to offer. Colourful parades were a great crowd pleaser and this festival continue to grow year on year. Skerries held its Soundwaves festival, as well as hosting the final stage of the An Post Ras for the tenth time in succession. The riders regard the atmosphere in the town as quite unique, and it is seen by them as one of the highlights of the event. Rush Harbour festival is proving to be one of the most eagerly awaited events on the festival calendar in the North County, and is attracting a record amount of visitors to the town for the past few years. Angela Byrne of the organising committee said, “This year Rush Harbour Festival was an amazing success for both us as organisers and for the town of Rush. The Swords Purple Flag Working Group is getting ready for an assessment of the Swords town centre (including Main Street, North Street, the Pavilions Shopping Centre and Airside Retail and Business Park), so Swords can receive the much coveted Purple Flag. Purple Flag is the “gold standard” for town centres at night and is the highest internationally recognised award for the evening and night-time economy in Europe. It brings increased footfall and strong recognition to the town centre as a dynamic, safe, clean and fun place to be at night and is a fantastic tool for promoting a quality evening and night-time economy offering to local, regional, national and international visitors. A detailed itinerary has been prepared for the judging team and the assessment will take place from 5.00pm on Friday, 21st August until 3.00am on Saturday, 22nd August. All businesses are asked to take particular care of the area outside their premises and to interact with the assessors if they call into their premises. While an itinerary for visits has been agreed, the assessors will have a number of periods of free time and will call into any business that’s open during the hours of 5.00 p.m. – 3.00 am next Friday night. “It has been really good working with the businesses in Swords, An Garda Síochána, Fingal Tourism, Fingal County Council, the Pavilions Shopping Centre and the North County Leader on the Working Group for the Purple Flag for Swords. I know the business community and other stakeholders will pull out all the stops to make sure that the assessors are impressed with Swords. Let’s show just how great Swords is as an evening location for people to eat, drink and shop”, said Tony Lambert, CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber. “Fingal County Council is delighted to support this initiative which will hopefully increase footfall, reduce crime and increase activity in the town in the future”, said Toni Hogan, Purple Flag co-ordinator with Fingal County Council’s Economic Development Services Department.

A local teenager has been selected to play at the prestigious Nike baseball development camp in the United States organised by scouts from the top professional league in the world. Seventeen-year old Paul Carey from Garristown competed and learned from some of the best coaches in Major League Baseball at Mercy College in New York from 9th to 13th of August last. Paul Carey Carey’s selection for the Baseball United Foundation’s Baseball Exchange Programme came through the high standards he has reached in his career thus far. The programme brings talented international youth baseball players to America, to help them learn the game through advanced coaching techniques from some of the most respected professionals in the US. Paul is a member of the Irish baseball squad and was selected to attend the training camp on merit due to his excellent leadership and impressive skills with the bat, according to scouts. He was originally noticed by MLB scout, John Tumminia during a charity youth baseball clinic in Ireland. Tumminia said his batting skills really stood out. “I met Paul when he was 15 years old,” said Tumminia. “At that time, I was impressed with his setup and lateral agility. He gave the pitcher a firm target and he displayed an overall level of raw talent that made him a prospect.” The aim from players like Carey is to be selected to play at college level baseball in the US, as this gives the greatest opportunity to establish a career in the Major League Baseball. Baseball United Foundation founder, John Fitzgerald said the breakthrough of Carey has set a precedent for other young Irish players to progress to a higher level in the US. “We think Paul will learn a lot while he’s here and the experience will be a benefit to his development as a baseball player. “We hope he will share what he learns at the Nike Baseball Camp to teach his teammates back home in Ireland and also serve as an example to Irish Little Leaguers who hope to play baseball at a high level.”

were not there to provide a choice of ethnic cuisine. So we decided that Swords needs this revamped restaurant to take this into consideration,” he said. “Swords means a great deal to us as a business. We cannot forget the wonderful support we have received from the greater Swords community. We grew as Swords grew and we feel that the town is a great place to do business,” he said. “Anybody who visits the new Indie Spice Grill will notice a great change. A lady who came to the restaurant who travels to Canada on a regular basis, said she feels she is sitting in a restaurant in Toronto. That goes to show that we have done something right. We are always open to constructive criticism in an effort to improve our service,” he said. Some of the main changes at Indie Spice Grill include a more open plan seating arrangement and newly designed tandoori ovens. Arif Ahmed explained, “This is because we are contin-
uously thinking of a healthy approach to eating. We have introduced a lot of street food that is common in India and a lot of grilled fish and venison. We are also sourcing everything locally and our tag line is: Totally India Locally. The idea behind this is that we are presenting total India, but we are sourcing all our products locally.” CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber, TonyLambert said, “The all new look Indie Spice Grill feels so different and creates an entirely amazing and wonderful venue for dining in Swords. The new menu also reflects this with excellent new dishes that are simply too tempting. I know it is already receiving great plaudits from its many customers, but it will be a major attraction to draw new customers as a destination restaurant for lovers of good food. This refurbishment of this great award winning restaurant adds greatly to Swords as a town of great places to eat, drink and enjoy yourself.”

The 8th Annual Hollywood Lakes Golf Day for St Francis Hospice took place on 7th August last at Hollywood Lakes Golf Club. The event, which was held in excellent weather conditions was a resounding success, with 50 teams of four taking part. So successful was the event that a two shotgun start will be be used next year to accommodate the numbers looking to play. After the event, the golfers enjoyed a BBQ and entertainment which was provided free of charge by ‘Nostalgia’, which was enjoyed by all. A special word of thanks goes to club professional, Krishnan, who partook in a ‘Beat the Pro’ contest, where he raised almost €1,000. This involved him waiting at the 4th tee box and challenging all-comers to get nearer the pin than him on the par 3 hole. It is reported that a small handful of golfers may have gotten the better of him, but not many. In the preceding seven years, an impressive total of €140,600 has been raised for the St Francis Hospice, with the event getting bigger and better with each passing year.

The man who tragically died after a fall in Tanzania has been named as 20 year-old Govan Jolliffe Byrne from Portmarnock, who was backpacking with friends in East Africa since June. His death is being described as a tragic accident. It is believed that he fell from a balcony in a night club in Zanzibar, Tanzania in the early hours of Sunday last. He was a student in NUI Maynooth and played GAA with local Portmarnock team, Naomh Mearnóg. The club paid tribute to the young man as a “true legend” who was always the soul of the party and everyone’s friend. He will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Govan Byrne. A tragic and extremely sad loss to our senior footballers.” Club chairman, Michael Hannon said, Govan was “a very well liked young man” who was very well respected in the area and said there was a sense of shock locally following the news of his death. Nobody ever had a bad word to say about him. He was a lovely young fellow. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” he added. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Death Of Former Parish Priest Of Malahide The recent death of former parish priest of Malahide, Archdeacon Macarten Brady, was greeted with sadness in the local community. He passed away peacefully last week in a nursing home in Killester. The late Archdeacon Archdeacon Brady was Macarten Brady 98 years of age, and according to a close friend of his, Bishop Jim Moriarty, he was a man of great personal integrity. Speaking to the County Leader, Bishop Moriarty said, “He was in Rome when the Second World War broke out and had great difficulty returning to ireland. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1941 and has always been devoted to parish work. His early days of priesthood were spent in Castledermot, Co. Kildare, and he eventually became parish priest of Malahide.” Bishop Moriarty continued, “Archdeacon Brady was a very good golfer and was a member of Portmarnock Golf Club. Indeed he was a good athlete who was also interested in football and keeping fit,” he said. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said: “When I was installed as Archbishop in the Pro-Cathedral in 2004, Archdeacon Macarten Brady attended as the oldest priest in the diocese. I deeply regret being away for his funeral. He was an extraordinary, good and kind man, blessed with a long life. Anywhere he worked, he did so with great generosity and is remembered with affection. He was particularly kind to many candidates for the priesthood.” said the Archbishop.

Callout For Skerries RNLI Skerries RNLI towed a yacht with two men on board to safety last weekend after the vessel suffered engine failure. Skerries RNLI were tasked by Dublin Coast Guard to assist a small yacht that had suffered engine failure near Shenick Island off the coast of Skerries. The alert had been raised by a fishing vessel in the area. The lifeboat, with volunteer Philip Ferguson at the helm and volunteers Joe May, A.J Hughes and Peter Kennedy on board, launched and proceeded to the coordinates given by the fishing vessel. Conditions at the time were very favourable, with calm seas and force one to two south easterly winds. The vessel was quickly located and after checking that all on board were well and not in need of first aid, the lifeboat towed the casualty to the safety of Skerries harbour. Speaking after the call out, Gerry Canning, Lifeboat Press Officer for Skerries RNLI said: ’Thankfully the crew of the fishing vessel took the time to see if everything was ok. We would urge anyone going to sea to check all their equipment and carry a working VHF radio, as mobile phone signals are very unreliable once you are away from the shore.”
Gertie Shields RIP The recent death of one of Balbriggan’s most influential residents, Gertie Shields has been greeted with great sadness in the town. Gertie was the founder of Mothers Against Drink Driving (MADD), which she set up after her daughter was killed by a drunk driver in 1983. The Board, CEO and staff of the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have offered its deepest sympathies to the family of Gertie who campaigned relentlessly to change attitudes to drink driving in Ireland. Through her sustained lobbying of Government, she managed to achieve extraordinary strides in road safety legislative and social change. In 2013, the RSA was honoured to present Gertie with the Supreme Award at the 2013 Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards in recognition of her enormous contribution to road safety in Ireland. Liz O’Donnell, Chairperson of the Road Safety Authority said: “It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Gertie Shields, Founder of Mothers Against Drink Driving (MADD). Gertie was one of those most ardent and tenacious campaigners for road safety since the 1980s when she lost her 19 year old daughter Paula in a road traffic

collision caused by a drink driver.” “Gertie spoke out about drink-driving when it wasn’t popular to do so. Much of the legislation in place today to prevent drink driving, and the sea change in public attitudes to this abhorrent behaviour, was made possible in part due to Gertie’s tireless work to ensure no other families endured the devastation caused by the loss of her daughter Paula,” she said. “When I spoke to my colleagues about Gertie, many words and phrases were used – compassionate, tenacious, ambassador for road safety, forgiving, dedicated. But one stands out from the rest and that is strength. To suffer such a tragedy as Gertie did, and to be able to harness that grief so that others wouldn’t suffer the same tragedy, requires a strength of character beyond measure. She was a true champion of road safety and for that we will be forever grateful.” Ar Dheis Dé Go Raibh A Anam

Over the past number of weeks, the County Leader has been giving you some top tips to help you out on your big day, and this week, we’re moving onto how to get yourself as organised as possible on the morning of your wedding. The trick to making the hustle and bustle more exciting than stressful is to make out a short timetable (and keep to it!) You don’t have to

If you are having more than four under agers, hiring a professional to do the entertaining for you is immediately going to take a whole heap off your shoulders. You will find one of these here in the North County. However if you’re only having one or two, make up some goodie bags with little toys from the local shop a few weeks before.

Congratulations to Richie’s Bikestore on your 20th Anniversary and all the best for the future from
Congratulations to Richie’s Bike Store on their 20th Anniversary and wishing them an equally successful future from
It opened for business at its present location in August 1995. Proprietor, Richie McNamara is very proud of the business he set up and as he celebrates 20 years serving the public in Swords, he told the County Leader about the secrets of his success. “We cater for all ages of cyclists, whether it be a beginner leisure cyclist, or a pure thoroughbred racing cyclist, we are your one stop cycle shop.” “Our fully qualified, professional staff are on hand from 10 am to 6pm Monday to Saturday to serve you and offer you quality and informed advice, whatever your query may be, to the best of their knowledge and ability. We pride ourselves on having the ability to pair each customer with the bicycle most suited to their everyday needs.” “We run a “same day” repair service, which means you and your bicycle are off the road for minimal time. Small repairs are generally done on the spot to allow minimum inconvenience to customers. Whether it’s our very competitive pricing, outstanding service or huge selection, we can guarantee you won’t be disappointed.” Richie’s Bike Store also provides a unique service to his many clients. “With every bike that we sell, along with the manufacturers’ guarantee, which generally applies to the frames and the parts, we also service our own bikes free of charge for as long as people own them. This is a massive selling point for us, as we know of no other bicycle shop that provides such a service,” he said. “We always stick to brands that provide value for money for our clients. We don’t carry a brand just because it’s a recognised brand, and if we discover a brand of bike that is better value for money, we incorporate that particular brand into our shop. Over the years we have dealt with many brands of bike in an effort to satisfy the requirements of our customers,” he said.

Congratulations to Richie’s for the past 20 years and looking forward to the next 20 years
Quality products and value for money are of paramount importance to Richie and his team who cater for all people from kids all the way up to the most lightweight professional racing bikes, with something to suit all budgets. Richie’s Bike Store is involved with various cycling clubs in the area, including the Garda Cycling Club. “We have also just started to sponsor another local club as well called Chapel Lane CC. This entails providing them with their cycling clothing at a discounted price, below what it costs us to buy. We try to give them the same quality clothing as the professionals use at very reasonable prices. We also assist them throughout the year with any event or activity the club may be promoting. We also undertake much of the bicycle maintenance for the Gardai. We supplied them with a large amount of their bicycle fleet as well as some of their mountain bike uniform and we service most of the Garda stations that have the mountain bike facility in Dublin. We provide a wide range of cycling clothing, accessories. We even build bikes from scratch to satisfy customers’ specific requests. Organisations like the County Council, security companies and first aid mobile units may sometimes need bikes for a particular task and we will sit down with them and we will match-up the bikes to their specifications. We are the sole agents for KTM Bicycles and accessories in Ireland and we have appointed various premium dealers across the country which we are developing at the moment. Prior to coming to my current location in the Town Centre Mall, I worked for four years in Mc Quaid’s bike shop on North Street here in Swords, but it’s all boarded up now. On the shop floor, we have approximately 120 different models, but our full stock would expand to around 500 bikes. It is very important to Richie that he can match the customers’ price range and provide quality bicycles at the keenest prices anywhere. Christmas is no longer the bonanza it once was because people are out cycling all year round, with no closed season. At present there are two full-time

staff members and one part-time staff member, who are involved in sales and service. In the 20 years since the business was set up, it has expanded. Initially the shop was located at unit 16 and six years ago, Richie acquired unit 15, such was the demand at the time. The Bike to Work scheme has proven to be a tremendous boost for Richie and he feels that this has contributed in a major way to the phenomenal increase in bicycle sales. “It has enabled people to
buy a better quality bike than they would normally buy. This has encouraged people to take up cycling and enjoy a healthy lifestyle and the fact that they can pay the reduced cost over the period of a year, has impacted hugely on sales. People that were involved in cycling years ago are now being encouraged to take it up again, due to the scheme,” he said. “We have a loyal customer base that we are very proud of and our customer service is massively important to us. When a potential customer comes into our shop, the first question we ask is, what will the bike be used for? We will then suggest a bike that is suitable for this purpose and give them a trial on the bike. This provides security and peace of mind for our customers, who know that their requirements are paramount to us.” “At Richie’s Bikes, we do everything to ensure you leave with the bike best suited to you. There are many impor tant things to consider when choosing a bike. We have a large selection and have something to suit beginners and pros alike.” Richie also spoke about the changing trend in bicycle sales, where sales of kids’ bikes were once huge, but now he could find they sell up to 50 adult bikes to one child’s bike. Much of this he puts down to the phenomenon of x-box, mobile phones and the internet for children. “Some kids up to eight years old are so much into technology that they cannot ride a bike,” he said. Fitting is very important in choosing a suitable bike. Richie explains, “The main thing is that you feel perfectly comfortable. Your limbs should be able to move with ease. This will allow you to move faster and with more ease. This allows you to concentrate on key things like

breathing, balance etc. We also can provide an expert bike fitting service, so if you are experiencing discomfort or want to ensure you are riding your bike in the correct position, book an appointment with our fitting expert as you should never feel strained or uncomfortable on your bike. If this is the case, come speak with us at Richie’s Bike Store. We don’t let you go until you are 100 per cent happy,” he said.

Love it or hate it, it’s almost time to wave goodbye to the breezy summer holidays and start getting ready for a new school year. Getting the new school year off to a good start can influence your children’s attitude, confidence, and performance both socially and academically. Even children who are eager to return to class must adjust to the greater levels of activity, structure, and pressures associated with school life. The degree of adjustment depends on the child, but parents can help their children manage the increased pace of life by planning ahead, being realistic, and maintaining a positive attitude. Here are a few suggestions to help ease the transition and get the school year off to a great start:
Make Sure They Stay Healthy It’s important that your children stay healthy and well, especially as we are moving into a
new season and the weather will become changeable. Pharmacies all over the N o r t h County will have a l a r g e selection of all the vitamins, as well as other products and tips for a healthier lifestyle that you and your family will need to s t a y healthy for the rest of the school year. Be sure to ask your local pharmacist if you have any concerns or queries, and
they can advise you what your next step is. This is a particularly
good option if your child is stressed or feeling anxious about the weeks ahead.

School Uniforms And Sportswear
and give you plenty of expert advice.
Some schools do have an “official” uniform store, but they vary both in terms of price, and as to how insistent they are that parents shop there. These shops can be very expensive, and by no means do you have to buy uniforms from these stores. In fact, the North County has many excellent ‘back to school’ clothing stores, with competitive prices and excellent deals on offer for you to choose from. You will also be able to find any sportswear that you need, with the local staff on hand to help
Opticians If your child wears glasses or contact lenses, now is the time to make sure that all their eye care needs are taken care of. The North County has a vast array of qualified opticians that can help you in this department. If they haven’t had an eye test this year, now is the time to get them one to make sure their eyes are in top condition for the new school term. Many opticians will have seasonal deals on as well, so keep an ‘eye’ out so you can avail of these.

Though summer is drawing to a close, there’s still time to enjoy the last of it, right here in the North County. This is perhaps the last chance for families to enjoy some quality time together before the kids go back to school at the beginning of September. There is so much to enjoy here in the North County and further afield. Our beaches and parks have been admired by visitors for many years and are among the finest to be found anywhere in the country. Activities like horse riding are always popular, especially with children and if the weather is bad, a visit
to your local leisure centre is always very appealing. Here the entire family can enjoy the swimming pool, gym, badminton and other sports, and have a nice meal afterwards as well. A round of Pitch and Putt or tennis are also something that the entire family can enjoy together. For children, Summer Camps are ideal for getting your little ones out and about and enjoying all the fun that the summer camps will have to offer. It is also an ideal way to make sure they keep fit, by keeping
active. These camps cater for most activities, from Gaelic football, hurling, rugby,
soccer, tennis to arts and crafts and music. All the camps around the North County are a paradise for families with young children and most importantly,
they’re safe and secure. This is such a source of comfort for parents to know that
their children are being cared for and entertained in a safe environment. There is nothing more relaxing than enjoying your family and taking the opportunity to gel as a unit. Let’s turn off the telly and get out and visit some really interesting places. We have the likes of Malahide Castle, Newbridge Demesne, Ardgillan Park, to name but a few, which provide the opportunity to get away from it all. Take a picnic with you and eat al fresco, which is always popular with everyone. If you prefer to stay at home, why not have some friends around and, weather permitting, have a barbecue. There is nothing quite as appealing as the smell of a barbecue wafting through the air. There are many excellent butchers in the North County, who can provide you with the finest meat for you and your friends to enjoy. They will also have special deals at this time of year, so it pays off to keep a sharp eye out for these deals. Another coastal
activity which is very appealing is sea angling, with areas like Balbriggan, Loughshinny, Rush, Donabate, Malahide and Portmarnock to the fore here. Always remember to be extra cautious when family members, particularly children are near water. Our excellent network of roads means that we can access anywhere in a short period of time, so let’s go and explore. If you wish to spread your wings a little, a visit to Dublin city is well worthwhile. We have a very interesting capital city with lots of places to visit. For adults, a visit here is memorable, with many of the finest pubs and
restaurants to enjoy. Attractions such as Trinity College and the world famous Book of Kells are a real treat, as well as a visit to Jameson Distillery or Guinness are highly recommended. Dublin City Bus tours are highly recommended, where you can relax and enjoy and enjoy an informative commentary. There is also an opportunity to explore our neighbouring counties around Dublin, which have so much to offer and many attractions for the entire family. The North County has some really worthwhile parks and places to visit, including something for the entire family to enjoy. There are hidden gems dotted around the area, where children can enjoy fun activities.

It’s always refreshing to see the sun shine through the windows so early in the morning and flowers blossoming in the garden. With Autumn just around the corner, the summer hours are still longer, and the days are warmer. Now may be the perfect time to get started on that summer project you’ve put off because the days were shorter and colder. Here’s the time to redecorate your house, or change the design of your garden. You may be in the mood for some major reconstruction, or possibly just want to make the house more summer friendly. It is possible to change the look of your home on the outside and inside, on just a small budget. Businesses here in the North County have some great summer offers on to give you the best bargain, and achieve your summer home on a small budget. So make
sure to keep an eye out for some great bargains to make your home and garden into a place that reflects our favourite season. The living room should be the most vibrant, lively room in the house. Decorate it with colourful ornaments adding a summery pop of colour. Candles are key to making houses feel like a home. Buy or replace some candles with some subtly sweet ones, similar to summer fruits. There’s nothing more relaxing and homely, than a candlelit
room and subtle lighting. Colourful candles are a great way to add colour, and comfort also. However, be sure to balance out the colour carefully, with the theme of your house. If it is prominently traditional, pastel coloured candles and ornaments will suit better, If however, your living room has a minimalist look, sticking to mainly shaded colours, you may get away with bright, bold colours which add character and dimension to your house this summer.

Locals Shine At Pitch And Putt Championships Ring Commons Pitch & Putt Club was the setting for the inaugural Final of the Fingal and East Meath Pitch & Putt Championship held recently. Teams from Skerries and also
Bellewstown Pitch and Putt Clubs competed in the final after they qualified as the two top teams following a league competition that ran through May and June. Twelve players from each team
took to the course in a very competitive final and luckily the rain kept its distance. Plenty of skill was on display as Kathy Richardson from the Bellewstown Club achieved a hole-in-one on

the course and both teams tackled the tricky 18 hole course. Bellewstown Pitch & Putt Club emerged victorious over their Fingal neighbours and were crowned the first Champions of the ‘Fingal and East Meath Pitch & Putt Championship’. Iris Cunningham, accepted the trophy and winners’ plaque for her team, which was presented by Caitríona Geraghty, Sports Development Officer, Fingal County Council.
The ‘Fingal & East Meath Pitch & Putt Championship’ was established this year to promote the game of Pitch & Putt in the North County and as part of a crosscounty initiative. Developed by Caitríona Geraghty, Fingal Sports Office, under the guidance of Ronnie Delaney, Ballyboughal Pitch & Putt Club, the Championship was an opportunity for clubs to create bonds of friendship and to promote the game. It is hoped that this competition will become a yearly event in the Fingal sporting calendar.

Council May Have To Return Rail Levies Fingal County Council will have to return levies it collected from builders and property owners, if the proposed Metro North project does not happen. The levies were collected from property owners along the route. The local authority, as well as Dublin City Council continued to collect levies on behalf of the the Rail Procurement Agency (RPA) since 2007 in the form of an increased development levy. So far, this has amounted to ¤14m being collected by Fingal County Council, which it is believed will have to be returned if the project does not go ahead. The levy applies to buildings and properties in a 1 km radius of the route, as that area is deemed within walking distance of the metro stations. The recession intervened with the plan, which was put on ice in 2012, but both Fingal County Council and Dublin City Council continued to collect the money as confidence grew that the project would proceed when the economy improved. In the meantime, Trinity College will have to stump up almost xxx250,000 in Metro North levies, as it plans to develop a new business school. This ambitious plan by the university has been granted planning permission and will see the demolition of a number of existing buildings and the construction of a six floor building. The payment of the levy is conditional on Metro North going ahead.
Greece Shows Us All A Warning Flag While the summer is supposed to be the slow time for news, events continue to role on. The conflict in Ukraine simmers on. Greece struggles to find a bailout agreement which the ruling Syriza party can live with. This radical party having achieved power have found that office is far more difficult than opposition. Sections within the Government are moving to leave the party to create a new far left one, dedicated to deliver that which they and their colleagues failed to do over the past months. Such a move may cause fresh elections. If so it will be fascinating to see how the electorate responds. Do they applaud those who lead their country on a courageous but failed journey against its international lenders? Or does it revert to those who created the flawed economy, but managed to keep the banks open and tourism and trade functioning until turned out of office earlier in the year? In the UK the Labour Party struggles to elect a new leader. The old sages caution of the dangers of supporting a radical leader who, as one of Corbyn’s opponents, accuse him of “offering old solutions to old

By Cathal Boland problems.” It seems that irrespective of who wins the leadership, it will be a difficult task to hold that party together. Is history about to repeat itself? Will a new party emerge and will the Conservatives be the long term winner of this electoral contest? Here in Ireland we have seen fragmentation of political parties since the last election. The impending General Election seems certain to result a multiparty coalition. Is it possible for the traditional established parties to reach common ground with their electoral opponents? Many of which are former colleagues who found them wanting. Politics unfortunately requires pragmatism in such situations. The question always is who blinks first. Multi-party government is not new in Ireland its record of reelection is terrible. Ireland will need to be sure what it is voting for and what the consequence of that vote will be for stable Government that is capable of ensuring our safe passage in what are still troubled waters, not only in Europe but also across the world.

Ashbourne Baseball and Baseball Ireland have announced the opening of a new International Baseball facility in Ashbourne. The new facility, which was officially opened on 8th August last, will be the home of the Ashbourne Giants youth and adult baseball teams. The centre will support the establishment of a new National Academy for the Baseball National Team Programme and will be a centre for hosting international tournaments. The first international tournament will be held at the new facility from 19th to 23rd August, with teams travelling to Ireland from Mexico, USA, Belgium and a youth team from the Netherlands. The senior and youth Irish teams will also be competing in this tournament. The International Baseball Centre is located behind the Ashbourne Community Centre on land leased from the Ashbourne and District Community Council. Sean Mitchell, President of Ashbourne Baseball and Manager of the Irish National team said, “We’re very proud to be able to announce the opening of this new sporting amenity in Ashbourne. The baseball club here, which was founded in 2009 has been going from strength to strength, with seven members selected on the panel of this year’s senior national team.” This centre is set to be a valuable asset for the local and national baseball clubs and will be a vital catalyst in promoting the game of baseball in the region.
