Welcome
Summer 2014
Welcome to the summer issue of South Cambs Magazine
As summer gets underway, we are looking forward to welcoming Le Tour de France to the area. The biggest cycle race in the world visiting the district in July will be a fantastic occasion and will help us showcase our wonderful communities. Hosting one of the world’s biggest cycle races has its challenges, such as road closures, extra visitors and changes to bus services. Our message to you is that this will be a day like no other. Please plan ahead whether you want to watch the race or get on with your daily routine. Pages 6 and 7 have all the information you need. Our very own free sporting festival and family fun day also takes place at the end of June. Parklife gives you a chance to try your hand at sports from paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking to athletics, football and archery. We also have a Tour de France inspired cycling zone. Check out page 11 to see how you can get involved. We would also like to thank everyone who took the chance to vote in the May elections. To help you find out who your local councillors are, and how you can contact them, we have included information on pages 30 to 33. And finally, on page 36 you can find out about the City Deal for Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire. The Deal we have been negotiating with Government could see up to one billion pounds of investment in the area to improve transport and help deliver much needed homes. Cllr Ray Manning Leader South Cambridgeshire District Council

Hosting the world's greatest cycling event brings big challenges such as road closures, extra visitors and changes to bus services. But if you plan ahead you can ensure you have a great time. The map on these pages shows the route the race will take, so you can decide where you could watch the riders. To see more information about which roads will be most affected, and the stewarded pedestrian crossing points, please visit www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/letourstage3. Given the large scale nature of the event and the road closures in the city centre, Drummer Street bus station will be inaccessible. To ensure bus services can continue and get as close to the centre as possible, a bus hub will be created at the railway station in the south of Cambridge. In the north, buses will be stopping at Maids Causeway, Mitcham’s Corner and Queens Road. The bus operators are looking to run services as close to the normal timetable as possible this includes normal start times for Park and Ride services - but they are conscious that demand for buses will be high. Again, the details of the changes are available at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/letourstage3 and via the bus operators. With the race starting at 12.15pm, the roads on and connected to the route in Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire will be closed at the following times: Roads closed - From Sunday 6 July, 5.30pm: Regent Terrace, Gonville Place and Parkside Roads closed - From Monday 7 July, 4am: Regent Street, St Andrew’s Street, Sidney Street, Bridge Street, Magdalene Street, Short Street, King’s Parade, Trumpington Street, Park Terrace, Parker Street, Emmanuel Road, Victoria Avenue, Drummer Street and Emmanuel Street. Roads closed - From Monday 7 July, 7am: Trumpington Road, Jesus Lane, Lensfield Road, Hills Road (between Regent Street and Station Road) and the A1301. These road closures will remain in place until 3pm when a phased reopening will begin. The last roads in the heart of Cambridge are expected to open by 6pm. With Lensfield Road and Jesus Lane remaining open until 7am, it allows early access to the Grand Arcade and Park Street car parks. Anyone using these car parks should do so in the knowledge they will only be able to leave once the respective road closures are lifted.

100 year commemoration of the Great War
Even though the rumble of guns may have seemed a million miles from the villages of South Cambridgeshire in 1914, the area has a rich history to tell about the Great War.
It’s this history that a brand new Cambridgeshire County Council arts project, ‘The Great War: Between the Lines’, is telling with its 100 year commemoration of the outbreak of hostilities. The aim is to bring to life the realities of conflict on the home front as well as on the frontline. Cambridgeshire Archives has unearthed hundreds of photographs, maps and documents. What really stands out are the letters and correspondence that give a glimpse of life on the frontline and an insight into key events of the Great War.
Wounded soldiers in Swavesey
The story is being told through a series of different events and initiatives, including:
Exhibitions touring local libraries which cover war time themes
A special free event at Hinchingbrooke House to commemorate the last day of peace
An online community archive where you can see the photographs and documents local people have been contributing from their own personal collections. You can contribute too
Walks to explore historic sites and places of remembrance to do with the Great War. Guides are available from local libraries. For more information, and to view the community archive, visit www.great-war.ccan.co.uk You can also call Sally-Ann Greensmith on 01223 715613
Fallen soldiers
Eltisley History Society has been researching the fourteen men from the village who died in the Great War. A Heritage Lottery Fund Grant will see the fruits of this research published in the form of a book commemorating the men and the sacrifice they made. The village's official memorial is the lych gate at the entrance to the churchyard. It incorporates two stones bearing the names of the fallen soldiers. The graves of two of those men can be found in the churchyard. A line of towering lime trees gives a more dramatic living memorial at the eastern edge of the village green. They were planted by Eltisley resident George Cozens whose idea it was that the men be commemorated in this way.

Community Did you know? There were 11 Voluntary Aid Detachment hospitals set up in South Cambridgeshire during the First World War which provided about 300 beds for wounded soldiers. In 1914 the Cambridgeshire Belgian Relief Committee provided housing for 450 Belgian refugees. Refugees were mainly offered accommodation in empty houses but some were placed in public buildings such as the workhouse at Caxton. Prisoners of war were not only held in large camps such as the one at Pattishall in Northamptonshire, but were also sent to small satellite work camps. These work camps existed across Cambridgeshire including Arrington, Caxton, Gamlingay, Linton, Meldreth and Papworth.

A new approach to passenger transport
A flexible bus service which is responsive to demand is being introduced to part of the district following the ‘Cambridgeshire Future Transport’ public consultation by Cambridgeshire County Council. From Monday 2 June, the new Monday to Saturday number 28 service will make scheduled journeys from Gamlingay in the morning, connecting with the Stagecoach 18 service at Kingston (or Comberton Village College on school days) for onward travel to Cambridge. In the evening, scheduled connections can be made at Cambourne for onward journeys to Gamlingay and Eltisley. The service will also make a scheduled Thursday journey from Cambourne to St Neots for market day. Residents in Eltisley, Croxton, Caxton, Longstowe, Abbotsley, Waresley, Gamlingay, Little Gransden, Great Gransden, Arrington, Croydon, Orwell, Wimpole, The Eversdens, East Hatley and Hatley St George can book journeys at other times. This can also help you make connections to services going farther afield too. Continued demand for the C2 service from The Hatleys to St Neots on Thursdays means it will continue to be run by Myalls Huntingdonshire Association for Community Transport but to a new timetable. (HACT) will operate the new 28 service To book a journey on the new 28 service, call 01480 411 114 by 1pm the day before you travel. Bookings are not needed for scheduled journeys. Community spirit saving local pubs
South Cambs Magazine
Director of Horningsea Pub Company Jack Lambert (left) and landlord Tom Canning from The Plough and Fleece at Horningsea
The local village pub is a British institution and an integral part of community life. In these challenging economic times, however, many rural pubs are struggling. We are keen to keep them at the heart of the community and are giving parishes the support they need to take ownership of these valued assets. Award winning community pub, The Plough and Fleece in Horningsea, will be playing host to a community pubs event from 10am to 4pm on Thursday 10 July. If you are interested in how to take a pub into community ownership and how to work with regulators to create a thriving business, this event is for you. Expert advice will be on hand from the Plunkett Foundation, Pub is the Hub and the British Institute of Inn keeping as well as officers from our licensing and planning teams and representatives from Trading Standards. Many of our communities are registering their pubs as assets of community value under the Community Right to Bid, but this is just the start of the journey. The Pig and Abbott in Abington Pigotts was taken into community ownership after being threatened with closure. It was revitalised and sold back into private ownership as a thriving business and continues to do well.

Bailiff fee changes - avoid charges by seeking help early
We’re urging people struggling to pay their council tax or business rates to seek support early as national changes to bailiff fees could mean you face extra charges. We’re pleased to say that the vast majority of residents and businesses pay on time, but in cases where money is owed we sometimes need to use bailiffs. Government legislation came into force on 6 April which changed the way that bailiffs, now known as enforcement agents, work and the fees that they can charge. The Taking Control of Goods Regulations are being enforced nationwide, and have been brought in by the Government to provide a clear structure to the enforcement industry. Under the new rules, the enforcement agents will charge a fee of £75 as soon as the case is passed to them. If the debt and fee is not paid, the agent will visit and a further £235 will be charged. On top of this, a further 7.5% will be added if a debt exceeds £1,500. For debts under a High Court Writ, the enforcement fee is £190 plus the 7.5%, and there is also an additional fee of £495 which may be charged if further enforcement is necessary. The fees are non negotiable. To discuss a bill, contact revenues@scambs.gov.uk or call 03450 450 064

Action on Energy: focus on solid walls
Around one in five homes in South Cambridgeshire are older properties built with solid walls. Insulating these can make a big difference as nearly half the warmth in these houses typically escapes through the walls. Insulating solid walls improves homes significantly but, until recently, the cost has been off putting. Now that is set to change. Working with Action on Energy, and in partnership with other Cambridgeshire local authorities, £5.6 million of government funding has been secured for a project which aims to make this work affordable. Funding of up to £6,000 per property is available through the project to help towards the cost of solid wall insulation. Additionally, to reduce any upfront costs that may be required, Green Deal finance is also available through the project. A Green Deal finance plan allows energy saving measures to be paid for over time, with payments set no higher than a typical household should save on their bills. To access the scheme, householders will need a Green Deal assessment. This involves a home visit by a qualified assessor and reports on what measures will save energy in your home as well as how much they will save. Normally through Action on Energy this would be £99, but for solid wall applications it is available for a significantly reduced £29. This is reimbursed when work is completed.
How are solid walls insulated?
Insulating solid walls can be done from the inside or outside of your home. In all cases a layer of insulation, usually around 100mm thick, or 4 inches in old money, is fixed to the wall. This keeps the warmth inside your home for longer. Internal wall insulation is a good option if you want to keep the external appearance of your home unchanged. New technologies have reduced the time required to install internal solid wall insulation, which can take as little as one day to complete and make good for a room. External insulation takes longer but is often more convenient. Many of our Council houses have recently been insulated in this way. External insulation with a rendered finish can transform your property and reduce maintenance. To enhance the finish, brick ‘slips’ can be added for detailing if desired. If you live in a conservation area, planning permission is normally required for external wall insulation. Outside these areas, planning permission is not required provided materials used are of a similar appearance to those used in the construction of the house. If in doubt, call our duty planning officer for advice on 0345 045 5215. For more information, or to apply for Action on Energy Solid Wall insulation, call 0800 093 3303, or check www.actiononenergy.net
20 www.scambs.gov.uk
How can you tell if your house has solid walls? In a cavity wall, all of the bricks are stretchers, ie lengthways on. In a solid wall, the bricks are a mixture of stretchers and headers, ie endways on. If you can’t see the bricks because the walls of your house are rendered, then measure the thickness of the walls at a window or doorway. A cavity wall is around 30cm wide while a solid wall is around 23cm wide.

Business rate changes
Following the Government’s autumn and budget statements, there are some important changes affecting discounts you can claim on your business rates as well as new ways you can pay. These came into effect on 1 April. Retail premises
If the rateable value on occupied retail premises (shops, restaurants, cafés and drinking establishments) is less that £50,000 then you may qualify for financial support of £1,000 per year. This is a two year scheme.
Previously empty retail properties
If a retail property has been vacant for more than 12 months, the new occupier can claim a discount of 50% of the rates payable for the first 18 months. This scheme runs until March 2016.
Small Business Rate Relief
Ratepayers already in receipt of Small Business Rate Relief will be able to take on a second property without losing their existing relief for a period of 12 months. This will be from the date of the change, on condition that the second property still meets the criteria for this relief scheme.
Instalments
Businesses can now ask to pay their rates over 12 months. Previously it has been payable over ten instalments. Businesses must apply for the discounts and to change their payment plans. Further information on how to apply can be found by visiting www.scambs.gov.uk/content/business-rates

New bin rounds save time and money
Thanks to new route-mapping technology we have been able to adjust our bin collection rounds to improve efficiency, reduce costs, achieve savings, all with little disruption to residents. Like most local authorities, we need to make significant savings over the next five years due to reductions in government funding. We are therefore looking at different ways in which we can deliver services to achieve these savings whilst minimising the impact on the quality of the services we provide. More efficient collection routes will save the council fuel and reduce the number of refuse vehicles on the road, which will also have clear environmental benefits. We are using our drivers and their local knowledge to ensure the routes work on a practical level too. Collection days will stay the same for nearly all households, but from September collection times may vary. We are therefore recommending residents put their bins out the night before, but they must be out by 6am on the day of collection at the latest. We might also be collecting some bins up until 5pm, so please leave your bin out until we have been to collect it. The project has taken months of careful planning and will see a total of 180 collection routes, performing 180,000 collections a fortnight to 60,000 properties. We have been working hard to keep disruption to an absolute minimum but, in a handfull of cases, where collection day changes may be unavoidable, we will contact those residents directly. This is also a huge change for our staff, so please be patient with any delays while the crews learn their new rounds. Bin collection calendars will continue to be sent out in the South Cambs Magazine and residents can check when their collection is due online at www.scambs.gov.uk/bins-by-parish. You can also follow us on Twitter (@southcambs) where we post reminders about which bin is due to be collected.
Green bin changes later this year… Our waste analysis shows that each year in the winter months of December, January, and February, the amount of compostable waste we collect from green bins almost halves, with far fewer households putting out their bins for collection too. This highlighted an opportunity to change how we collect this waste to better reflect the service need and make more efficient use of limited public resources. In December, January and February therefore, your green bins will be moving to a monthly collection. For the remainder of the year (March to November), your green bins will continue to be collected fortnightly. This service change, along with adjustments to collection rounds, will contribute around £400,000 a year to the savings needed to meet reductions in government funding and rising inflation.
To help with this change, we will be including detailed information in the autumn edition of the South Cambs Magazine and on our website, as well as issuing information to parish councils, through parish newsletters and the local media.

Recycling open day
Have you ever wondered what happens to your household waste and recycling after it’s been collected? Come along to the annual open day at AmeyCespa Waste Management Park on the A10 at Waterbeach on Saturday 21 June and find out. There will be fun for all the family with an overarching cycling theme to celebrate the forthcoming Tour de France visit to the district. Activities will include a cycle try-out around a recycled track, cycle-powered smoothie makers, model-making using waste packaging, and competitions, including the chance to win bike lights if you bring household batteries for recycling at the DHL electrical recycling stand. Visitors will also be able to see a range of re-use, recycling and composting exhibitions, including how to repair and recycle bikes at a workshop led by Opportunities Without Limits - the Sawston-based charity that refurbishes bikes. There will be coach tours of the site to see how waste is recycled, and walking tours of the mechanical biological treatment plant and materials recycling facility. The event, organised by AmeyCespa and Cambridgeshire County Council, is free for all the family and open from 10am to 4pm. For more information visit www.ameycespa.com/east or call 01223 861010

Electoral Commission
Individual Electoral Registration - the facts The electoral registration system in Britain is undergoing the single biggest change in the registration process for over 100 years.
The new system is called Individual Electoral Registration, which modernises the process as well as making it more secure. We are urging residents to familiarise themselves with the new system which will be in place from 10 June in England and Wales.
What is Individual Electoral Registration?
Where previously, one individual in a household could complete the annual registration form we send out with the details of everyone living at that address, the new system will require every individual to be responsible for their own registration. Another difference is that people will need to provide information such as their national insurance number and date of birth to confirm their identity. This is a legal requirement set nationally.
Why is the system changing?
Individual Electoral Registration gives people responsibility for their ď Ž The new system enables residents to move own registration, instead of giving the responsibility to someone else. from paper registrations to more convenient The change will also allow more convenient methods of registration, online methods for example, by internet. Because the new system requires evidence of identification prior to registration, the electoral register will be more secure and help guard against fraud.
Do I need to do anything?
To make the transition to Individual Electoral Registration as simple as possible, the government has asked us to move as many people as we can to the new register automatically. To do this, our register will be matched to data held by the Department for Work and Pensions. We expect around 80% of our electors to match successfully and we can try to boost this number by matching against existing data held across other council services. Most residents already registered therefore, will be moved to the new system without needing to do anything and will continue to be registered to vote as usual. We will send letters out during August to let these people know that they are registered under the new system. Where we cannot match a resident’s data, we will Electoral Commission write to them directly to inform them they need to re-register and how to do it. For the first time, these individuals will be able to register online if they have internet access. Paper registrations will also be available for those who prefer it. Residents needing to re-register will be required to provide their national insurance number and date of birth. If you do receive notification that you need to register, please complete your registration as soon as possible - we are required to send a canvasser to your house if we do not receive a response. For more information on Individual Electoral Registration, visit www.electoralcommission.org.uk and keep an eye out for the nationwide publicity campaign in July

‘City Deal’ to unlock millions of pounds of investment in the area
A City Deal for Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire has been agreed with the Government which could see up to one billion pounds of investment to improve transport links and help deliver an extra 1,000 much-needed affordable homes.
Along with our City Deal partners - Cambridge City and Cambridgeshire County Councils, The University of Cambridge and the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership - we were invited to negotiate a Deal two years ago to help support jobs being created in the area. Up to 2031, it is expected that 45,000 new jobs will be created in Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire and 34,000 new homes will be built. From 2015-19, the Deal will see £100 million released to invest in transport infrastructure. Two further rounds of £200 million each would also be released if the City Deal partners achieve agreed triggers, such as forecasted job creation and the delivery of new homes. The Government’s offer of a City Deal follows more than a year of negotiations, including the details of “GainShare” which would release later rounds of extra funding. This works by the local area keeping a share of the additional tax income that will be generated as a result of future growth. The first £100 million would effectively be provided as a grant. Contributions from developers building homes in the area along with funding from the local councils will also be used in addition to Cllr Manning presented the City Deal to the extra money from the City Deal. councillors in April. The Deal would also see the three councils sharing some of their funding and powers, and working even more closely than now. An example of this would see the three councils produce one Local Plan and Transport Strategy for the whole City Deal area when they are looked at again at the end of the decade. Information about our current Local Plan can be found on page 39. Councillors from all three councils have already agreed to sign up to the City Deal and it will be officially signed by all parties and the Government in the next few weeks. Cllr Ray Manning, Leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “The Government recognises that our area is a driver for the country’s economic growth and investment is needed to support the delivery of around 45,000 new jobs. Without the investment, the creation of jobs and the homes needed for children growing up in the area would be strangled. “Our determined campaigning with partners has seen us secure action on the vital upgrade to the A14, and the City Deal negotiations have successfully unlocked a further multi-million pound investment for our people.” Details of transport scheme options for investment from the first round of City Deal funding are expected to become available later this year.

Get ready for the domestic RHI
What is the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (dRHI)?
The domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (dRHI) is a government financial incentive, designed to encourage people to make the switch to renewable heating systems in their homes. For example, homeowners and landlords could be eligible to receive an income of about £2,000-£6,000 when fitting an air-to-water heat pump, depending on the size of their property and the type of heating system installed. The domestic RHI offers quarterly payments over seven years, based on a set of tariffs and according to the type of system installed, which help to offset the cost of installing renewable heating systems.
is taken from your Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), although its design efficiency (seasonal performance factor) is also used to calculate payments. For solar thermal, the figure is taken from the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certificate, which is based on a calculation by your MCS installer. For some households, metering may be required and the payments will be based on regular meter readings.
Estimate your domestic RHI income online
Daikin UK has an online RHI Estimator Tool, which you or your installer can use to project the potential income you could receive from the
domestic RHI. Please visit www.daikin.co.uk/ rhi/rhi-estimator-tool for details.

RHI tariffs
The tariff levels are 7.3 p/kWh for air-to-water heat pumps and 19.2 p/kWh for solar thermal. The tariffs have been set at a level that reflects the expected cost of renewable heat generation over the system’s lifetime. Tariffs will be subject to review every quarter.
Estimating RHI payments
Payments are usually based on the heating system’s estimated annual heat output and made on the portion of renewable energy generated. For heat pumps, this figure

Planning
Local Plan examination A Plan to provide 22,000 new jobs and 19,000 new homes up until 2031 has been submitted to Government for independent examination.
The Secretary of State has appointed Laura Graham as the independent planning inspector who will also examine Cambridge City Council’s Plan. Her task is to establish whether the Local Plan meets the development needs of the area in an appropriate way, or if changes are needed. Our Plan proposes building a new town north of Waterbeach, a new village at Bourn Airfield and to extend Cambourne westwards. Around 900 homes would also be built at six of the larger villages which have the best services and transport links. The new homes would be in addition to around 14,000 homes that have either already been allocated as sites, recently been built, are under construction, or have planning permission in locations such as on the edge of Cambridge and at the new town of Northstowe. The inspector will consider the comments submitted during the consultation we held between July and October last year and there will be a programme of hearings which are open to the public. Giving evidence at these is at the discretion of the inspector and only those who made representations in this period can ask to appear. She anticipates the hearings are likely to begin in the latter half of October. A programme officer, Gloria Alexander, has been appointed to assist the inspector. Any correspondence about the examination should be directed to her by emailing programme.officer@scambs.gov.uk or by calling 01954 712921 or 07803 202578. For the latest news about the Local Plan, please visit our website www.scambs.gov.uk/localplan or call us on 01954 713183

Next phase in Council house building programme
The second phase of our biggest council house building programme since the 1950s is about to get underway. We will be investing around £30 million over the next ten years to build up to 200 new homes for people on housing waiting lists, and will be submitting a planning application for 15 properties at Hill Farm in Foxton shortly. The plans follow the completion of our first four new Council homes in Linton at the end of last year. We are also hoping to build 11 homes in Bourn, around 11 in Gamlingay and up to 20 as part of the first homes at the proposed new town of Northstowe. Subject to planning permission being approved, homes in Foxton could begin being built later this year. The building and investment programme has been made possible after we took advantage of changes in Government policy in 2012. All the rent collected from tenants in South Cambridgeshire now remains in the district rather than around Housing portfolio holder Cllr Howell and local half being paid to central Government. In return, we had to take on part of member for Foxton, Cllr Roberts, in front of the national housing debt. the site of the proposed new homes Cllr Mark Howell, cabinet member for housing, said: “It's great to get the wheels in motion on providing more much-needed council homes. We have always said we want to work with parish councils and local members to help meet local housing needs across the district and I am very grateful for the support we have had.”

South Cambs Magazine
New youth council takes shape New youth councillors are joining the team to represent the views of young people from across the district after seven of our existing crop had to step down.
The exiting youth councillors (pictured below) are being thanked for their hard work after either reaching the age limit or standing down due to other commitments. The new batch join existing youth councillors Bella Forster-Lewis, Thriplow; Dale Hargrove, Willingham; Callum Hatch, Longstanton; Thomas Mayer, Swavesey; Samantha Menezes, Cambourne; Louis Pascuzzi, Stapleford; Nathan Samuel, Landbeach; and Gemma Steele, Waterbeach. Two of the first events the new youth councillors will be involved in are the annual business forum and Cambridge Conversations. At the forum they will join employers from across the area to share ideas on what employers are looking for in young employees and raise the profile of the skills young people can offer companies. Cambridge Conversations is a chance for the youth council to debate how young people can get more involved in their communities and make things happen.

Competition
Winner’s spotlight One lucky reader is riding high after scooping a £400 bike in our spring competition. We asked readers when Parklife - our free family fun day at Milton Country Park takes place this year. Sylvia Fish of Great Shelford, who correctly answered Saturday 28 June, was drawn at random to win a Chesterton commuter bike courtesy of Billys, which has just opened its new and improved two storey bike shop in Burleigh Street, Cambridge. Sylvia said: "It was such a surprise to hear I had won the competition. "My husband and I have been thinking for some time about buying new bikes. We had better take a look at the mens bikes in Billys now so that we can enjoy going out in the district and getting some exercise together."

Get hooked on fishing Fishing is an age old pastime that combines appreciation for the sights and sounds of the great outdoors with the thrill of a float bobbing on the water as a fish bites. It is regularly enjoyed by around four million people of all ages and abilities in the UK.
Becky Pope, 20, first tried fishing during a holiday angling course when she was seven. She took to it quickly, began participating in local junior competitions and has won a number of trophies. Becky is a member of Cambridge Fish Preservation and Angling Society at Milton Country Park and Cambourne Fishing Club. She said: “I really enjoy fishing. It's lots of fun and a great chance to spend quality time outdoors. I am always learning new techniques and find the anticipation of what you may catch exciting and fulfilling.” This year Becky is undertaking a Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Angling to encourage others to take up the sport. If you want to give fishing a try, there are free local taster sessions on offer:
1 June - Lake Ewart, Cambourne
28 June - Todd’s Pit, Milton Country Park
27 July - Todd’s Pit, Milton Country Park
10 August - Lake Ewart, Cambourne (Under 16s)

NEW! City of Cambridge Triathlon
Cambridge is set to host an Olympic distance triathlon this year and has already attracted over 3,000 participants. The event, featuring a 1500m swim in the River Cam followed by a 40km cycle ride through the South Cambridgeshire villages of Hardwick, Bourn, Kingston, The Eversdens, Comberton and Barton, and a 10km run around the historic city centre, will take place on Sunday 28 September. Whether you are interested in racing or want to help create a cheering team to support participants along the route, we hope you will embrace this exciting inaugural event. The event will be supporting Cancer Research UK and hopes to build on the success of the half marathon which has raised nearly £400,000 for the charity in the past three years. For more information about the triathlon, visit www.onestepbeyond.org.uk/city-of-cambridge-triathlon.php or contact the organisers by emailing info@onestepbeyond.org.uk

Funding for future sports stars Sports stars of the future can now apply for a share of £10,000 to help them reach their potential.
Our Elite Athlete Grant scheme has been topped up to support exceptional athletes at all stages of their sporting career, whether they are competing at regional level, making progress at national level, or representing Team GB in world class events. Nick Heald, 36, from Over is a world class para-canoeist and received £1,000 last year. Nick became involved in paracanoeing in 2011 after suffering a tumour in his spinal cord, which left him with restricted use of his legs. In 2012, Nick won gold in both the International Canoe Federation World Championships and the European Championships. In 2013, Nick retained his title in the European Championships, setting the current world record, and took silver in the World Championships. Nick is also a proud ambassador for the Rooprai Spinal Trust, which fundraises to support spinal research and fund specialist neuro-phsyiotherapy for those with a spinal cord injury. Nick said: “Getting back into sport has really helped me to get used to life with a disability. My short term aim is to regain my world title in August and my long term goal remains focussed on securing a place in Team GB for Rio 2016. “Now that canoeing is a Paralympic sport, competition is extremely tough and I am grateful to the Council for awarding me a grant. It has helped me to purchase a new canoe which will hopefully help me to improve my pace this season. Equipment and travel costs can be prohibitive so I would recommend any aspiring athlete to apply for this grant to help them achieve their goals.” For more information and to apply, visit www.scambs.gov.uk/elite-athlete-award-scheme or contact Joseph Minutolo on joseph.minutolo@scambs.gov.uk or 01954 713359

Don’t wash raw chicken
Food Safety Week takes place from 16 to 22 June and this year’s message is don’t wash raw chicken.
Research carried out by the Food Standards Agency shows that 38% of consumers claimed they always wash raw poultry whilst 58% reported washing it occasionally. Washing raw poultry spreads bacteria around the kitchen, splashing it on to work surfaces, clothing and cooking equipment. Food Safety Week aims to raise awareness of foodborne diseases, including campylobacter which is found in raw chicken and remains the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK, responsible for around 460,000 cases each year. The national campaign is urging consumers to help protect themselves and their families from food bugs such as campylobacter by following a few simple safety tips:
Cover and chill raw poultry below 5˚C in a position where juices cannot drip
Avoid cross contamination by separating raw and ready to eat food
Wash hands, utensils, chopping boards and surfaces in warm soapy water after preparing raw poultry
Cook poultry thoroughly until it’s steaming hot and juices run clear
Cover and dispose of food waste quickly so it does not attract flies For more information, visit www.food.gov.uk/chicken and look out for the national publicity campaign during Food Safety Week
