Project 01 RENDITION/ Descriptive Study Personal Project. [IN]Arch 2013, U.C. Berkeley. Tutor: Melanie Kaba, Peter Samuelson
1
This project introduces a descriptive way of perceiving objects. It explores the form, the geometry, the inner structure and the movements involved in a chosen object. By studying into the internal nature of the object, an orthogonal drawing and an unfolded drawing of the object were produced.
2
I. Object Study An electric transformer is a really small object and arrangement is taken so as to concentrate the drawing within a small range at the center of the paper so that viewers can easily focus onto it. In addition, the construction lines are arranged into a circuit that represents the normal condition of it as an electric unit.
Though it is small, the inner structure of a transformer is highly sophisticated so the unfolded drawing is arranged into interconnected component parts. The overall layout resembles an explosion both to indicate the abnormal state when it is disassembled and to remind the viewers of its inner complexity.
Orthogonal Drawing - The Circuit
Unfolded Drawing - The Explosion
Beyond the category of qualitative and quantitative reasoning, another approach of perceiving the world is through description and I find this kind of rendition with interventions of both laws and the mind’s impressions stands closer to my internal nature.

II. Gesture study In the second part of the project, a body part is chosen for further study and I dealt with my thumb and index finger as well as adjacent parts of the palm. Before doing the final drawing, I made some preliminary study about the contours and sections of some important components.

Project 02 Back-FORMATION/ Reconstructive Study Personal Project. [IN]Arch 2013, U.C. Berkeley. Tutor: Melanie Kaba, Peter Samuelson
7
Having studied the forms and geometry of a body part through deconstruction, this project mainly concerns the reconstruction of the body part with a representative element chosen from the drawings done in the object study section. After some preliminary study about the connections and mapping of the element, a physical model of the reconstructed body part is produce.
8
The Element
Mapping Scheme
Having studied the geometry of the body part by unfolding, in the last part of the project, I chose an ‘element’, which was based on a 3“x3” moment of the unfolded drawing of the electric transformer, and designated for it some rules of connections and transformations in order to rebuild the body part with it.
A preliminary study was taken out on the unfolded drawing produced in the gesture study section to find out a general scheme for module mapping.

The Exaggeration
A Close Look
The reconstruction process was not a purely accurate and faithful one. Instead, it emphasized the gesture by exaggerating the two fingers. In addition, torsion was incorporated into the elongation of the fingers to add to its dynamicity.
The model, in its small scale, accomodates the geometry of two fingers and their adjacent parts. Meanwhile, it creates interesting space within its surface. A close look into it can get us a sense about how it could accomodate people if it is enlarged.

Project 03 Spatial EXPLORATION/ The Dystopic Art Center Personal Project. [IN]Arch 2013, U.C. Berkeley. Tutor: Melanie Kaba, Peter Samuelson
13
This is the last project in [IN]ARCH program. In this project, I also started with a module from the drawings in the previous project. Unlike the second project, the main concern of this project is the interaction with the boundaries of a designated space. A physical model was produced. Besides, I also made a digital duplicate of it in Rhino 5 to study its sections and plans and eventually did some digital renderings.

The Module
606 Ellis Street, San Francisco - Located at the heart of Tenderloin, a neighborhood long been reputed for its cultural diversity and artistic attractions, this single house produced a hollow in the urban façade, which brings a sense of surrealism. The project aims at occupying this space by building an art center with some special programs.
The module used in this project comes from the unfolded drawing of the previous project. To be faithful to its mechanical origin, rigid movements are preferred to flexible ones.

Study Models: The Connections
Study Models: the Guidelines
*Physical Model Scale: 1/2” = 1’-0”
To explore and occupy the space, some rules are set to be followed. Under these rules, general guidelines for the expansion of the structure are drawn out. However, the scheme for vertical prolongation still needs further testing.
Basic Connections
There is some existing murals on the left wall, which are to remain.
Planar Connection: x and y axes
Linear Connection: z axis
When expanding to the vertical space, the structure can be attached to the two side walls.
Planar Connection: Polar Coordinate
Further Explorations
Vertical Direction: supporting system
17
Horizontal Direction: Floors, Terraces, Stairways
Arch: Switching between planes
The façade should contain an opening that is large enough to let the 2-storey house to be seen
The vertical prolongation follows a pattern of attaching to the two walls alternately, thus producing a co/sinusoidal spiral. But the final form remains undetermined.

Pro: The first level is reorganized. The second floor is connected as a whole. Con: Excess weight and mess exist on the right.
Pro: The whole structure is more balanced, Con: The first level remains unintefered. The second floor terraces remain scattered, leaving some areas inaccessable.
The final form is relatively balanced and can produce adequate interference with both the 1st and 2nd levels.

Project 04 Flowline IDEALIZATION/ The Ribbon Personal Project. Instructor: Christoph Klemmt
This project explores the potential of generating a form according to a set of idealized flow lines based on the law of elasticity so that the structure itself can help reorganize the circulation within the chosen site. It is my first personal practice with Grasshopper and Vray for Rhino. The open area at the south end of Guangzhou CBD, China, is chosen as the site for this experiment.

The space created by the ribbon and its accessories is consistent with the reorganized flow routes produced by the spring system. Lying at the nexus of the Guangzhou CBD, it provides a large amount of renovated public space and is capable of accommodating various functions as well as a series of events.

This group project includes the design and making of an installation. It mainly discusses the subject of translating physical laws into a visible and tangible form. After some experiments on the forms under different combinations of variables, a final form is decided on and an installation is constructed to further prove that such a form itself justifies the physical rationality of its own. Note: During the project, I was responsible for both the designing and the making process of the installation.

‘Frsh/( ﺵﺭﻑcarpet, rug)’ is a geometry consisting of surfaces generated using digital-aided FE(finite element) analysis simulations, which results in compression and tension based morphologies. The surface itself becomes the structural system, which at the same time mediates the programmatic and spatial requirements of its surroundings. For this, it can be viewed as a materialization of FE analysis. To build up the installation, 200 aluminum cells are utilized

...have been studying civil engineering for the last four years. Upon my entering university, I wanted myself to abandon the old, seemingly superficial understanding of the world and to look deeper into the internal structures, the rules and the laws lying beneath the appearance of the environment. I did ,for a time, feel the truth was approaching, yet gradually, I began to realize that the more I perceive the external nature this way, the more I find my internal nature discontent. I remember that I...

This way of thinking might be my true intuition, my true internal nature. However, it was suppressed by myself, constantly, in favor of ratiocination, in the hope of understanding the external world more rationally and I think that I...

..am and will possibly always be involved in this conflict between the external nature and the internal nature. Being 69% right brain oriented, I am more sensitive to images and creative thoughts. Meanwhile, I am more apt to be driven by the instinct, yet, paradoxically, the utmost instinct lying within me might be a call for order and harmony, that is, a stronger balance between ratiocinations and whims. This might be why I...
