Although we didn’t get into the crowded church Frikirkjan to see the cozy show by Múm, we got the chance to see another great, melancholic act called Low Roar, in the nearby venue Iðnó. There are a few more shows we didn’t get the chance to see (Jon Hopkins, Slow Magic, Midlake, Borko, Pascal Pinon) due to the packed venue or another parallel show. However, these are the facts about Airwaves we have learned: either you freeze in a queue several times per night with a high probability you miss the beginning of the shows or you prefer to stay at one venue and you make compromises while missing out to see the band you initially wanted to.

Iceland Airwaves is about going to Blue Lagoon and chilling in the warm water while your head is freezing and you’re still enjoying drinking a beer with a bunch of Danish guys who turn to be band members playing that night in a small bar. It’s about enjoying a concert in a local restaurant together with Björk sitting few rows in front of you. It’s about having brunch in a café and being served by a boy who plays in 3 different bands at Airwaves. Yes, the magic of Airwaves lays also in meeting all those great artists you came to see in random places and yet feeling like you are on the same boat. To quote one anonymous attendee, “It’s like small and big. And the quality is big.”

had the term “emo” loosely used to describe their act, there’s a discernment to be made from the bands of the last 90’s like The Promise Ring and Sunny Day Real estate. However, the parallel revival has arguably, in a way, lent a helping hand to the emo revival.
ROREY JONES
Hopefully, by now you’ve heard about the emo revival. Revival is probably an appropriate thing to call it since it’s hardly an evolution based on what the genre veterans are doing. Some bands like Saves the Day, who released their self- titled album in September last year, are still going strong from where you may have left off on their discography. Meanwhile, Texas is the Reason got together for a reunion tour in the summer of 2013. Hell, I think everyone’s inner emo kid freaked out a little bit when we all heard that Further Seems forever was reuniting with original singer Chris Carrabba.
We know what you’re thinking. “OK pal. Get over it. I enjoyed high school as much as the next guy but the Emo genre is dead; finished.” While I’m eager to forget my collection of track jackets and a couple pairs of black-rimmed, prescription less, eyeglasses, I’m not too cool to admit I still listen to my old favorites with some regularity. Alas! A few bands have been injecting new life into the genre, fueled by our collective high school nostalgia, right under your nose. Here are a few doing it best.

The grandsons of the genre’s forefathers start their top track off with a clip proclaiming “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: No more fucking ABBA.” I’m not sure that there’s anything more punk rock than sound clips resisting the Swedish pop gods. Their tunes aren’t bad either.
One (Some, instead of “One”?) of the latecomers to the revival are Orlando natives, You Blew It! Despite more lineup changes than Chucky Cheese has turnover, they managed to score a few gigs with the Get Up Kids. Though they’ve been fashionably late to the party, we’re happy they’re here.

While even radio regulars like Jimmy Eat World couldn’t sustain mainstream popularity for forever, it seems that The Dangerous Summer is carrying the torch. Its not hard to get behind a band named after a famous Hemingway book and it seems that California label Hopeless Records agreed. Several tours and five years later, these guys are pushing everyone else here to keep up with their play counts.

After their first documentary, An Island, picturing the band and an island, Efterklag flew over to the far north to collect sounds for their upcoming album. They spent nine days on the audio expedition in the forgotten ghost town Piramida on Spitsbergen, far above the polar circle. They’ve collected over a thousand sound recordings they eventually used forthe album Piramida (2012). The documentary interweaves the band wandering around the deserted town with the narration of Alexander, former Piramida citizen. Alexander recalled memories from the era when the hopeful Russian miners moved there to find a better life; a dream that would unfortunately never come true. Efterklang are from Denmark. WES ANDERSON
The best part of Anderson’s sterling career has been his consistency. He’s consistently released a film every few years since his debut as a director, which means that, as a fan, you never have to wait too long for another work. Which is amazing when you consider some of the lengthier projects,
like the stop animation project The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Its also helped that in between he’s done some high profiles advertisements like the short-film for Prada featuring Jason Schwartzman as a failed race car driver, reunited with his long lost Italian family. Two things have always been great about Anderson’s style throughout his career: A steady lineup of all-stars and his particular style. He never strays far from either. Though he’s brought in some amazing mainstays over the years, he’s stuck with a stellar lineup of heavy-hitters. Also, I’ve always appreciated the way he, much like the Beatles, sticks to his style. His most recent film The Grand Budapest Hotel is most certainly one of his best but he’s lasted so long with his peculiar brand of filmmaking that any fan must be happy that he’s here to stay. Check out his new movie The Grand Budapest Hotel if you like classic costumes, famous actors or the color yellow.
