THIS MONTH’S HIGHLIGHTS H O T A I R FA R E S | M Y N A M A R | M E K O N G SKI QUEENSTOWN | QUEST ON CHAPEL

Welcome to the May 2018 edition of Turbulence. From the editor, Sean Simmons

One of the first things I learned when I joined this industry, and I remember my trainer at British Airways so clearly even to this day, was “in travel, be prepared for change, because every day, you will need to embrace it and move with it”. Never was that truer than in today’s environment. So many influencers on the industry that it can make your head spin. So, in saying that, here are a few of the changes that may affect you and your colleagues / family. Our corporate booking platform, SERKO, has undergone a number of updates over the last couple of months, and we highlight them in the pages ahead. Are you using SERKO? Are you enjoying the SERKO / Helloworld Mobile APP? The feedback so far has been incredibly positive, with the updates enhancing the user experience. Keep your feedback coming!

WE’RE LOOKING FOR OTHER CLIENTS LIKE YOU! DO YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW SOMEONE WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM SEAN SIMMONS TRAVEL SERVICES? FOR EVERY SUCCESSFUL REFERRAL COMES A REWARD! CONTACT US FOR MORE INFORMATION

your passport is valid for travel and automatically alert you when your passport has less than 6 months validity. Qantas commenced their new “game changing” service from Perth direct to London, with much fanfare. Feedback has been very mixed from travellers who have used the service, ranging from “incredible flight, such a treat to not have to change planes en-route” to “ARGH! 17 hours in economy was a killer”. What do you think about the idea of flights becoming longer and longer? Me? More than happy to stretch these long legs after 10 hours or so! A raft of new services from Australian Airports, announced or commenced over the last few months, plus increases to existing services, including but not limited to – Melbourne to Colombo with Sri Lankan Airlines. Daily non-stop service. Melbourne to Santiago, Chile with LATAM. Departures Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Sydney to Zhengzhou, China with Tianjin Airlines. Departures Tuesday and Saturday

We can help you save money. Whether you travel a little or a lot.

Regardless if your business is a new start up or an established company, Sean Simmons Travel can help you save money on your business travel bookings. CASE STUDY Client A is small to medium enterprise with 20 employees, 10 of which travel, 4 of those regularly.

Client A is growing at a rapid rate, and as such more travel is inevitable.

Client A used to book their own business travel, by searching online for the best airfares, hotel rates and car hire. Thinking they were getting the best deals, they didn’t realise how much time and effort it took to compare all the different websites, prices, book them (if they were still available), and then consolidate the information into one readable itinerary.

To streamline their booking process further, Sean Simmons Travel is rolling out their powerful online booking solution – Serko. By utilising Serko and its associated mobile app, Client A’s savings will increase from 10% (current average) to between 18 and 20%. Client A then gets the best of both worlds; an online tool incorporating several web based hotel sites, (Booking.com / Expedia. com), 57 car rental companies, airport transfer services and over 200 airlines, PLUS access to a highly experienced team of travel specialists, who are ready to assist with the more complicated travel itineraries, and any of your ‘Bleisure’ bookings.

By working with Sean Simmons Travel, Client A has been able to implement a seamless booking process – whereby the team at Sean Simmons Travel manage their travel requests, provide the best option, and fast turnaround itineraries, taking into consideration the companies preferred suppliers and travel needs.

ABN 48153795129 | AFTA 10216 | ATAS A10436

Client A receives regular reporting on their travel spend - allowing them to manage budgets easily, have access to discounted air, hotel and car rates not available to them online, and most importantly have their precious time back to do what it is they are hired for, and not spending hours as a travel agent searching for the cheapest deals.

Serko is regarded as the most powerful online booking platform in the industry – and offers a new and improved way to manage your companies travel requirements. · Book flights, hotels, car hire and transfers all in one place. The biggest travel brands in the region, at the best available rates · Book and manage business trips via the Mobile app or via desktop weblink · Allow your travellers to book their own travel and win back hours of admin time · Set rules to control who can book what and get back control over travel spend . Have all bookings sent to you for approval or set up a multi-level approval hierarchy to effectively manage your budget and ensure best possible pricing is achieved at all times · And all the while, the reassurance that the helpful team at Sean Simmons Travel are either a phone call or email away

What’s “Bleisure”? A combination of Business travel and a portion of Leisure travel, perhaps extending your stay over a weekend for some R&R, allowing their travellers to combine business and leisure travel. Client A is seeing an increase in productivity, higher staff retention and a happier, more content workforce.

Queenstow Sean Simmons Travel is excited to present this amazing ski package deal to Queenstown.

The recently opened QT Queenstown brings all that we love from QT Hotels, a quirky atmosphere, luxurious furnishings, attentive and unassuming service and views over Lake Wakatipu that just cant be beaten. Add to this their signature restaurant, BAZAAR, and you are set for an unforgetable break to refresh your spirit.

6 | Turbulence | May | 2018

Destination info

Queenstown lies at the only outlet to Lake Wakatipu (a bridge goes over the Kawarau River at Frankton), one of Otago and New Zealand’s most scenic lakes. It caters for tourists on a wide range of budgets, from backpackers to luxury tourists. In many respects Queenstown can be a tourist trap. However, reasonable prices and bargains can be found for those prepared to look for them. Queenstown is a party town during high season. If you plan on getting a good night’s sleep, then you might consider staying slightly out of town. QT Queenstown is close enough to town centre to be convenient but far enough away to escape the

late night noise. It is common to see people on the street until 05:00, coming back from the disco or pub. If you are looking for a relaxing scenic holiday, Wanaka (an hour’s drive away) is smaller and more tranquil (with less of a party atmosphere).

History

The town and surrounding area was originally settled by Europeans and a substantial Chinese population for gold mining and farming in 1860s. After the decline of goldmining, Queenstown became a sleepy rural town, popular as a summer getaway. In 1947, New Zealand’s first commercial skifield, Coronet Peak, opened and since then the town has grown into a

wn Hot NZ Ski Deal

world class tourist resort. There are now 4 commercial skifields within easy driving of Queenstown.

Eat

There are a huge variety of numerous eating establishments to be found in Queenstown, from allhours takeaways to fine dining. Reservations for dinner are important at the best places most times of the year, and most nights of the week. Fine restaurants serve world-class seafood (local mussels, oysters and deep sea fish such as blue cod), game, red meat (farmed venison, lamb and beef). (Continued next page)

Queenstown Drink

Nightlife in Queentown is largely about drinking, and there are over a hundred licenced premises in Queenstown, with most in the downtown area. Most bars have licenses to remain open until 04:00 and it is lively most nights. There are cheap bars popular with backpackers and young locals, and sophisticated and expensive wine, cocktail and imported beer bars. Many bars and pubs have sunny outdoor courtyards in the summer months, and roaring open fires in the winter. Major sports events are normally to be found on screen somewhere in Queenstown. There are two small casinos for adult entertainment. Many bars offer food.

Activities

Renowned for it’s skiing, Queenstown is also a base for exploring the region’s vineyards and historic mining towns. There’s bungee jumping off Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge and jetboating on the Shotover and Dart rivers. In winter, there’s

8 | Turbulence | May | 2018

skiing on the slopes of The Remarkables and Coronet Peak. You can experience both with the package deal we are offering. Coronet Peak is only 18 kilometres from Queenstown and has some amazing views. This area also has excellent snow making equipment, which makes for a longer season then the other areas around Queenstown. There is a combo multi day tickets with The Remarkables available. The Remarkables are located on the southeastern shore of Lake Wakatipu and rise sharply into the air. They are only 45 minutes from Queenstown and have a frequent bus service to and from town. There is also a combo multi day tickets with Coronet Peak available.

Getting there

Queenstown International Airport is well served by domestic and international flights by major airlines while major New Zealand Highways connect Queenstown to surrounding South Island regions. If you’re planning to travel by road, you can hop on a

bus or join a tour. On your drive to Queenstown you’ll come across incredible natural landscapes and many attractions making it an ideal trip if you have time to explore. From the airport, the cheapest way into town is on the Connectabus service, which runs every 20 minutes (check that it’s going straight into town via Remarkables Park) and costs $12 one way - pay the driver when boarding. Most drivers will not accept $100 bills, so be sure to get change from the airport if needed. For the Taxis into town cost about $20-25 while shared shuttle vans work out almost as cheap as the bus if you can get a big enough group together and will take you straight to your accommodation.

QT Queenstown has luxury furnishings and lots of wonderful dining options.

Serko Mobile – your personal Travel Concierge

Serko Mobile is the first purpose-built mobile app for business travel and expense management. It is available for Serko Online travellers and/ or Serko Expense users on Android and iPhone. A new enhancement for Serko mobile allows travellers to select their preferred fare and preferred hotel, instead of Serko returning the cheapest fare/hotel. Previously when booking your travel via the app, Serko mobile would return a recommended itinerary.

This would contain the cheapest airfare available and a recommended hotel based on the search criteria selected. With the latest update Serko mobile allows travellers more freedom with their selection – you are able to select fare, bags and extras, and then if a hotel is required you can select the preferred hotel based on your needs. WITH SERKO MOBILE YOU CAN: - Book flights and hotels direct from the app - Change or cancel bookings before and/or during a trip*

- Get GPS linked airport travel time alerts - Check-in on mobile for airlines including Air NZ, Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar - Receive flight delay and cancellation alerts - Share travel itineraries with colleagues and family - Track your checked luggage with integrated Bag Locator technology Contact Sean Simmons Travel if you are interested in learning more about Serko Mobile or any of the other Serko features.

Mynamar & Mekong BESPOKE JOURNEYS

Journeys to Southeast Asia and Beyond

Experts in the culinary and wellness fields join travellers aboard The Jahan and Anawrahta to provide a new perspective on these Southeast Asia destinations. Luxury Heritage Line cruises are combined with the unique and exclusive experiences of Trails of Indochina to highlight the culinary and wellness themes in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

18 | Turbulence | May | 2018

Myanmar Travellers to secretive Myanmar are welcomed by local people as their only contact with the outside world, making this one of Southeast Asia’s most rewarding destinations. Myanmar’s travel experiences are simply unparalleled. Try taking a slow boat up the Irrawaddy to Mandalay. Relax in a private lodge on the shores of misty Inle Lake. Take a balloon ride and get a bird’s eye view of the extraordinary temples of Bagan. Trek into the forests to spot rare indigenous bird species.

Mekong Southern Vietnam covers the Mekong Delta, the extreme southern end of the Mekong River, and the area around Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam. As with all deltas, it receives the bounty of the siltation from the upper Mekong, and as such is a very rich and lush area, covered with rice fields. It produces about half of the total of Vietnam’s agricultural output (in fact the delta produces more rice than Korea and Japan altogether), and is the place for timeless sceneries of farmers planting or harvesting rice.

The Mekong splits in Cambodia into two main rivers, the Bassac and the First river, then in Vietnam into a more complex system, creating a maze of small canals, rivers and arroyos interspersed with villages and floating markets. Life in the Mekong Delta revolves much around the river, and all the villages are often accessible by river as well as by road. The high times of life in the Mekong delta are the lunar new year, and the mid-autumn festival, where children will set hundreds of candles on their way on the river on as many tiny skiffs.

VIRGIN AUSTRALIA UPS ITS GAME ON THE TASMAN, ANNOUNCES OVERHAUL OF AUSTRALIA-NEW ZEALAND FLIGHTS Virgin Australia has announced a suite of changes to its TransTasman services, including two new routes and increased frequency into key markets. The changes will take effect at the beginning of the Northern Winter flying season on 28 October 2018. From 28 October 2018, Virgin Australia will commence up to five flights per week between Sydney and Wellington, as well as up to four flights per week between Melbourne and Queenstown, becoming the only airline to offer Business Class on the MelbourneQueenstown route. Virgin Australia will also make the following schedule changes: • Auckland – Sydney increased to triple daily weekdays and double daily on weekends • Auckland – Melbourne increased to double daily every day • Auckland – Brisbane increased to double daily with additional peak day services as required

24 | Turbulence | May | 2018

From 28 October 2018, Virgin Australia will reduce frequency between Christchurch and Melbourne from 11 flights per week to a daily service, and Brisbane-Wellington from up to 14 services per week to nine. Virgin Australia Airlines Group Executive Rob Sharp said: “Virgin Australia is upping its game on the Tasman and we’re delighted to announce two additional routes to our Australia-New Zealand network. “As well as increasing frequency on key routes from Auckland, we have also improved the timing of some of our New Zealand flights to better suit the needs of both leisure and business travellers. Our entry into the Melbourne-Queenstown market will bring some muchneeded competition to the premium leisure sector, with Virgin Australia the only airline to offer Business Class on this route. Virgin Australia also offers other unique products such as Economy X featuring extra legroom and priority benefits. “While the BrisbaneWellington and ChristchurchMelbourne routes will have a small reduction in frequency, we remain committed both

markets. Virgin Australia also remains the only international airline flying to and from Dunedin. “We have had a strong presence in New Zealand since 2004, and we look forward to bringing more exciting initiatives to this market very soon,” Mr Sharp said. Virgin Australia will operate a modern fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft on Sydney-Wellington and Melbourne-Queenstown, featuring: • Eight leather Business Class seats in a 2-3 configuration • Business class food and beverage menus designed by Luke Mangan • Virgin Australia entertainment streamed to your own devices • Amenity kits, featuring Hunter Lab products (exclusive to Virgin Australia) • Economy X – up to 40% more legroom with priority boarding and screening

Singapore Airlines set to resume non-stop flights to New York & Los Angeles

Increased security requirements for travel to the USA

Singapore Airlines will resume direct flights to New York and Los Angeles from the end of this year, with another North American destination tipped to appear on the non-stop map in early 2019. The move will also mean that Singapore Airlines will be flying three versions of the Airbus A350: its original ‘standard’ three-class edition, the two-class ultra-long-range version being used for Los Angeles and New York, and a regional A350 variant fitted with all-new regional business class seat and economy, but without premium economy, tipped to be utilised on intra-Asia routes.

Following the introduction of increased security requirements by the United States Transportation Security Administration late last year, airlines have gradually implemented new measures that apply to all travellers to the US.

Singapore Airlines receives new Boeing 787-10 The first Boeing 787-10 has been delivered to Singapore Airlines. The newest and largest member of the Dreamliner family has a longer fuselage and can carry up to 40 more passengers than the smaller versions. The new Dreamliner will make its debut in May, with routes from Singapore to Osaka and Perth.

All customers with upcoming flights to the United States should note that increased security requirements will apply at the airport and may include additional screening at the departure gate. • If travel commences at Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney International Airports, these additional requirements will take place in the check-in zone, where possible. • Customers connecting to USA flights in Brisbane: proceed directly to the Transfer Desk located between Gates 79 and 80. • Customers connecting to USA flights in Melbourne: proceed directly to the Service Desk at your flight’s departure gate. • Customers connecting to USA flights in Sydney:

o if arriving into Sydney Domestic Airport, proceed directly to the Transfer Lounge at Gate 15. o if arriving into Sydney International Airport, proceed directly to your flight’s departure gate. International network updates for the USA and Asia Qantas is making a number of adjustments across its international network in response to demand and to better utilise its fleet. These include adding capacity to Los Angeles with all flights being operated with A380s and 787-9 Dreamliner’s, and extra services to Osaka and Manila, along with other changes for select US and Asia routes. The adjustments to our international network are part of our strategy of making the best use of our fleet and matching demand by having the right aircraft on the right route at the right time. We’re already seeing strong demand for the end of year holiday period on our services to Los Angeles and Osaka, so it’s expected the extra capacity will be well received.
