MYKONOS

Qatar Airways has announced that starting May 30, 2018, they will be flying to the Greek island of Mykonos. To celebrate we have put together this special feature on what to see and do.

Turbulence | February | 2018 | 5

Known as a rather indulgent island and famed for its windmills, there are more things to do in Mykonos than just enjoying good shopping and a cosmopolitan nightlife. History buffs and mythology fans will love the Archaeological Museum, the Aegean Maritime Museum and the Folklore Museum. Near the harbour, the 15th-century Church of Panagia Paraportiani, featuring four churches on the ground and one built on top of them, is the most photographed church on Mykonos and a must see. Look out for Petros the Pelican, official mascot of Mykonos, while you’re strolling down by the harbour, and consider

6 | Turbulence | February | 2018

visiting the trademark 16thcentury windmills which can be seen from all points of Hora. For religious sites, head to Ano Mera to view the 18th-century Monastery of Panagia Tourliani and the Monastery of Paleokastro. A trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the island of Delos, mythological birthplace of Artemis and Apollo and declared a national museum, will reward with its famous archaeological sites, while Little Venice’s, with

its characteristic balconies overhanging the water on the sea’s edge, is an enchanting area to explore. Of course, Mykonos also has many popular beaches, including upmarket Psarou, family-friendly Platys Gialos, and tranquil Ftelia. Visitors should keep in mind that many beaches in Mykonos are nudity-friendly.

AEGEAN MARATIME MUSEUM

DELOS

WHAT TO SEE AEGEAN MARITIME MUSEUM

The Aegean Maritime Museum features wonderful models of pre-Minoan ships, rare engravings, a superb collection of old maps and documents, navigational instruments and rare coins. The ship ‘Thalis o Milesios’, built in 1909, is berthed at the Hellenic Navy’s Museum wharf at the Paleo Phaliro marina and is definitely worth a visit. The garden courtyard is picturesque and features replicas of ancient marble gravestones of sailors lost at sea from the island of Delos, as well as anchors and the top of the

old Mykonos lighthouse. Although the museum is very small it is well-labeled and very interesting, giving insight into the history of the island. Anybody with an interest in maritime history will love this small gem of a museum and even children will probably enjoy a quick exploration of the displays, making it a good attraction for the whole family. The Aegean Maritime Museum is right in the centre of town and it only takes about an hour to take everything in. The museum is a popular jaunt for cruise passengers and is often included in walking tours of Mykonos. No photography is permitted in the museum

but you can take pictures in the courtyard. Address: Enoplon Dynameon, Mykonos Town Website:

DELOS

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the island of Delos is a must for not only history buffs, but also for lovers of Greek mythology. In fact, it is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. The island was inhabited as early as the

3rd millennium BC and has been a sacred site for multiple religions, cults and sects over the centuries. It has also played a role in numerous historical events and been the subject of prophecies and myths. The archaeological excavations on Delos are extensive and ongoing and many valuable ancient artefacts and buildings have been uncovered. Some of these are on display in the Archaeological Museum of Delos. Look out for the circular Sacred Lake, now dry, the Minoan Fountain, the Terrace of the Lions, and several impressive ancient buildings and temples, some of which have remarkable mosaics. Famously, in Greek mythology, Artemis and her

twin brother Apollo were born on the island of Delos to the King of the Gods, Zeus, and his wife Leto. The statues, sculptures, temples and terraces are a must see for all visitors to Mykonos and a trip to the island of Delos will reward greatly, not least of all because it is a beautiful, if sparse, island, which offers stunning views.

MYKONOS WINDMILLS

The white windmills are iconic on Mykonos island and are visible from every part of Hora village. Those interested in the mechanics of windmills - once such common and important technology and now seldom seen - will be captivated by them and children also tend

to be enthralled. There is a reason for everybody to take a stroll to the famous windmills though, and that is the spectacular views from the hill. The hill is best visited in the late afternoon, towards sunset, and overlooks the whole town of Hora and the harbour too. There are 16 windmills left on Mykonos and seven of these stand on the hill at Hora (also often called Chora). Some of them were built by the Venetians in the 16th century, but construction continued into the 20th century so they are not all that old, or have been renovated since then. They were once an important means of survival and income for the inhabitants of the town

PARADISE BEACH

and were used primarily to mill wheat. They are whitewalled, thatched-roofed windmills and are rather mesmerising, although they are now out of use. It is a great spot for photographs and picnics and one of the mills has been turned into a small museum. There is no need for directions as the windmills are probably the first thing you see when you enter the village or the port.

NIGHTLIFE

Known as the party playground of Europe and famed for its nightlife, Mykonos has some of the most exciting clubs and bars in the Mediterranean, providing a fantastic night out for the more sophisticated traveller.

Often compared to the Balearic island of Ibiza, Mykonos has a pumping party scene. Head to Caprice and sip on a cocktail while the sun sets before heading out for a night on the town. The island is known as one of the world’s most popular gay hangouts; it’s not surprising that a hedonistic party scene exists here with a clump of celebrated gay clubs all located prominently in central Taxi Square, and almost always packed to the ceilings in the summer months. Bars with live jazz bands, rock, house and blues line the streets, guaranteeing a good night out for all. Those keen for a spot of traditional Greek music and dancing best head to

Thalami. Although there are many more bars than clubs, after hours spots abound on Mykonos, and Paradise Beach is the place to go for popular party haunts with large pools, DJs, theme nights and fantastic views - a great way to watch the sun rise.

SHOPPING

Mykonos is one of the most expensive of all the Greek Islands, and a trendy destination for many gay travellers and fashionistas, so it’s not surprising that Mykonos offers a wide variety of shopping, from supermarkets and shopping centres to smaller boutiques and local markets. There is

Turbulence | February | 2018 | 9

something for everyone, but beware: the price tag can be high! Matogianni Street is the main strip and a good place to start browsing. With fantastic art galleries, Byzantine jewellery stores and clothing stores, such as Soho-Soho, a lot of the shopping is geared towards cruise ship daytravellers. Other popular buys include hand-woven scarves, rugs, and even locally made sandals. Paros offers little in the way of shopping in comparison to Mykonos Town but head for the old town behind the harbour for some hidden treasures, such as beautiful jewellery and art. Many of the visitors to Mykonos put a high premium on good shopping and trendy

10 | Turbulence | February | 2018

souvenirs so nobody should be disappointed in Mykonos from this perspective; the island has not faltered yet as a refuge for the young, beautiful and stylish (and there is plenty of fun kitsch on offer too!).

CLIMATE & WEATHER

The Mykonos climate is characterised by hot, dry summer weather and mild winters. Temperatures in July and August range from 86ºF (30ºC) during the day to 72ºF (22ºC) at night. Rainfall is almost non-existent in summer but showers can be expected between October and April. The weather on the island is typical of all the islands in the region, which

means that it is largely Mediterranean with the odd influence from North African climes. The temperate weather is fantastic for visitors and although the heat can be oppressive and quite overwhelming for those who aren’t used to it summer remains the most popular time to visit Mykonos by a landslide. If you visit in the idyllic summer season - the hottest months are July and August - then expect the island to be extremely busy and the beaches packed. If you can bear to miss out on the fashionable season then the best times to visit the island are late spring and early autumn. May is a very pleasant month and by this time the water should have warmed up sufficiently for

SUPER PARADISE BEACH - THE ULTIMATE PARTY DESTINATION

swimming. September is another gem and in early autumn the seas are almost as warm as in summer. Not many people choose to visit Mykonos in winter but if you do it will be wonderfully empty and much cheaper, although many shops and restaurants will be closed.
