What Adults Need to Know about Kids and Substance Use Dealing with Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs by Katharine Sadler, M.Ed. Putting a difficult situation in perspective, this hands-on guide explains why youth abuse drugs, how to identify signs of substance abuse, and how to deal with the difficulties of this destructive behavior. This book includes a thorough list of the substances youth are most likely to abuse—including over-the-counter drugs and inhalants—and reproducible handouts that itemize the effects of each drug. Several scenarios are discussed, such as when a student admits to using drugs; when a student says a friend, sibling, or parent uses drugs; when to call a social worker; and when to call law enforcement. Teachers, counselors, and parents can all benefit from the helpful advice in this realistic look at working with kids and drugs in the twenty-first century.
Katharine Sadler, M.Ed., is a certified prevention professional and works as a community prevention specialist with Indiana Prevention Resource Center, part of Indiana University’s School of Public Health.

Creating a Culture of Academic Integrity A Toolkit for Secondary Schools by David B. Wangaard, Ed.D., and Jason M. Stephens, Ph.D. Responding to the growing epidemic of academic dishonesty, this authoritative text lays the groundwork for a positive school makeover. This guide—which culled research from six high schools in Connecticut that indicated that more than 90 percent of students participate in some form of cheating during the average school year—provides teachers, school administrators, and parents with a toolkit of resources and strategies needed to engender a culture of scholastic honesty. With reproducible handouts and instruction on establishing an Academic Integrity Committee, this unique resource provides a plan and policies that support a climate of honesty and hard work. A CD-ROM with copies of each handout and additional references is also included.
Changing School Culture to Promote Academic Integrity: A Conceptual Model To change individuals we must change culture; to change culture we must change individuals. Thus, a comprehensive effort to promote academic integrity must not only focus on changing students, it must also include more systemic, cultural change. This toolkit has been designed to do both, offering a broad range of approaches to changing school culture and individual behavior in a dynamic, mutually reinforcing fashion. As we have indicated, in the fall of 2007 we began the Achieving with Integrity project to promote academic integrity in a diverse set of public high schools.4 The model we created to guide our efforts was rooted in both theory and research that have long proved effective at the postsecondary level. We know, for example, that academic dishonesty is reduced by a third to a half in schools that have created a culture of academic integrity (e.g., McCabe and Trevino 1993). School communities create a culture of academic integrity through the use and integration of multiple approaches (there is no single silver bullet). As depicted in Figure 1.1, our model (and the one that serves to guide the organization of this toolkit) consists of four dimensions that, when operating together, create a culture where “achieving with integrity” becomes the norm.

The Right to Be Safe Putting an End to Bullying Behavior by Cricket Meehan, Ph.D. From individual interventions to school- and district-wide programs, this book provides strategies and solutions for stopping bullying behavior. Its comprehensive approach covers all aspects of bullying and its consequences, providing the necessary information to keep kids safe. Ways to help students who are bullied, ways to intervene with students who show bullying behavior, guidelines on how to partner with parents to stop bullying, and best practices in bullying prevention are some of the many topics addressed in the book. It is the complete guide to stopping bullying behavior and creating a positive, healthy environment for kids.
Teachers Wonder, “Why Do Parents Hesitate?” Frequently asked question: Teachers often wonder, “Why are parents/ guardians so hesitant to approach school officials when their child is being bullied?” Parents may hesitate because: • They fear making a bullying situation worse. • Their bullied child asks them not to. • They are unsure what to do. • They feel powerless. • They are embarrassed. • They fear being overprotective and/or believe it’s the child’s responsibility to handle the bullying.
Audience: Youth-Serving Professionals, Educators of Grades 5–8 81/2 x 11, 160 pages, paperback, includes CD-ROM with reproducible pages, $32.95 ISBN 13: 978-1-57482-491-9 Pub Date: September 2011
Cricket Meehan, PhD, is the coordinator of School Mental Health Projects at Miami University’s Center for School-Based Mental Health Programs. Her scholarly work includes research articles, book chapters, and numerous conference presentations throughout the United States. She lives in Liberty Township, Ohio.
Many parents or guardians may fear that by involving the school, their child will be singled out among peers, which can lead to more abuse. This is a legitimate fear in cases where students may receive special support or attention from school officials, such as escorts to class. Sometimes, parents or guardians do not contact the school because their child fears retaliation, embarrassment, or being singled out. This causes the child to beg his or her parents not to contact the school. In some cases, parents/guardians have approached school officials but have been told that there is nothing that can be done. This leads to a sense of powerlessness. Other parents do nothing because they believe they will be seen as overprotective if they intervene in a problematic situation with their child’s peers. This may stem from a belief that it is their child’s responsibility to handle the bullying situation.

Excerpt from Get Things Going Introduction The Benefits of Playing as a Part of the Work Culture Games and experiential learning have their place in the business side of life, be that the staff meeting, boardroom, club gathering, or local PTO. They have a serious side that can help advance the work of any group in a playful and purposeful way while simultaneously adding perspective and fresh energy. They keep things on the inspiring and interesting side of work. Benefits to the cultural change can be seen in how games • level the playing field and create neutral spaces; • are relationship-building in nature; • invite participants to interact in a different way than their normal, daily routine; • ease anxieties and increase comfort levels; • involve and engage the “whole” person (mind, spirit, creativity, body); • provide opportunities for everyone to speak up and out; voices can be heard; and • create teachable moments and offer safe venues to recognize and address touchy situations or behaviors.

Parent, Teacher, Mentor, Friend How Every Adult Can Change Kids’ Lives by Peter Benson, Ph.D. Detailing daily actions that have a lasting significance on kids, this guide for all adults shows that positive adult–child relationships are one of the most important factors affecting a young person’s development. Rather than focusing on teens’ problems, this handbook takes a proactive approach and highlights hopeful actions adults can take to have a positive impact on a young person’s life. For example, adults will learn to use 30-second encounters to offer compliments and to ask meaningful questions of children that lead to deeper conversations. This call to action invites every adult to be an advocate for children and teenagers, promoting happier, healthier, and more successful youth.
