It’s a handy pocket resource for adults who want quick and easy-to-implement ideas for interacting with a child, whether they’re parents who want to mix things up, mentors looking for new ideas, or counselors who need to break the ice. Keeping in mind that resources are often limited, these activities are designed to be low-cost and low-prep. They focus primarily on youth in grades 5 through 8, but they are easily adaptable to a wide range of ages, both younger and older. • Lets the user adapt activities to an individual child’s needs • Usable in a variety of settings • Includes follow-up questions and “food for thought” • Designed to strengthen relationships and trust 2009, 5˝x 5˝, 104 pages, softcover. Engage Every Student Motivation Tools for Teachers and Parents
By Elizabeth Kirby, Ed.D., and Jill McDonald, M.Ed. This book offers teachers and youth workers strategies to engage and motivate youth in classroom and group settings. It explores reasons behind a lack of motivation, such as learning disabilities, family and environmental factors, or the need for learning approaches that match a student’s academic style, and provides inventories and exercises to help teachers identify those reasons and tailor learning activities accordingly. The book also provides exercises and handouts designed to foster self-esteem and a love of learning, and to create a positive parentteacher-student relationship that will encourage learning in and out of the classroom. Handouts include: • Worksheets for teachers and parents to keep track of progress • A multiple intelligences inventory • Best-practice tips • Learning profiles • Strategies for parent-teacher meetings 2009, 8½˝ x 11˝ 128 pages, softcover. Great Group Skits
Available in July
50 Character-Building Scenarios for Teens
By Lynn Grasberg and Gina Oldenburg Created by experts who teach improvisational theater, Great Group Skits is a resource for educators and youth workers looking to provide new and creative role-playing exercises for youth. Ranging from small pieces for a few people to large-scale skits that involve an entire class, this book would help educators engage with kids and help kids engage with each other. Rather than using line-by-line dialogue, these skits are designed as improvisational scenarios that give youth a starting point and let them decide where to go with it, enhancing their creativity, self-reliance, and analytical skills. Each skit is designed to be as “prep-lite” as possible, and includes an estimated time, ways to modify the skit for various age groups, and a list of follow-up questions designed to reinforce the lessons learned. Also included is information on how to facilitate skits, getting kids motivated and energized, and creating your own skits. The skits are divided into categories that include: • Imagination • Motivation and leadership • Teamwork • Peer pressure and integrity • Communication skills • Conflict resolution 2009, 6˝ x 9˝ 192 pages, softcover. Ideas for Educators 42 Ready-to-Use Newsletters for School Success
by Nathan Eklund, M.Ed., and Adrienne Gilby, M.Ed. Ideas for Educators gives teachers and administrators a quick and easy way to learn and incorporate the Developmental Assets into daily teaching practices. Designed as a series of newsletters, they can be printed out from the CD-ROM or sent via e-mail as complete documents, modified to fit your school’s individual needs, or even cut-and-pasted into your existing school and district newsletters. Written by two experienced teachers, each newsletter provides an overview of a Developmental Asset and how it works in a classroom setting, and then gives teachers strategies and tips for infusing that asset into work with students. Classroom strategies are easy to implement and can be quickly incorporated into classroom work without requiring special materials or elaborate preparation, and can be adjusted to the needs and education levels of the students. Each newsletter also contains a section on fostering that Developmental Asset in a teacher’s life, making Ideas for Educators not only a classroom aid, but a staff development tool as well. 2009, CD-ROM Item Code: 738 • $49.95 EDUCATION Blog with Nathan Eklund, M.Ed., a professional speaker BLOG

Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child
NEW!
The Heart of Parenting
by John Gottman & Joan Declaire Every parent knows the importance of equipping children with the intellectual skills they need to succeed in school and life. But children also need to master their emotions. Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child is a guide to teaching children to understand and regulate their emotional world. And as acclaimed psychologist and researcher John Gottman shows, once they master this important life skill, emotionally intelligent children will enjoy increased selfconfidence, greater physical health, better performance in school, and healthier social relationships. 1998, 240 pages, softcover, 8½˝ x 5½˝ Item code: 777 • $14.00
NEW!
Your Child’s Strengths A Guide for Parents and Teachers
by Jenifer Fox Educator Jenifer Fox argues against the flawed paradigm that “fixing” kids’ weaknesses is the way to achieve success. Rather, Fox promotes focusing on kids’ natural inclinations in three interdependent areas: Activity Strengths, Relationship Strengths, and Learning Strengths. Pairing inspiring firsthand accounts of success with practical workbook tools, alongside an outline of the award-winning strengths-based Affinities curriculum Fox has implemented in her own school, Your Child’s Strengths is a user-friendly and indispensable guide for parents, teachers, and administrators alike. 2009, 8¼ x 5¼, 368 pages, softcover. Item code: 776 • $15.00
A perfect companion piece to Dr. Benson’s Sparks, this book helps parents and teachers tap into the strengths of children.
SPARKS How Parents Can Help Ignite the Hidden Strengths of Teenagers
by Peter Benson, Ph.D. Learn how to awaken the “spark” that lives inside each and every young person. New research shows that when adults nurture this inner sense of purpose, teenagers achieve higher grades in school and are more likely to be physically healthy. Find out how parents and other adults can help young people experience joy, energy, and direction in life. 2008, 6˝ x 9˝, 256 pages, hardcover. Developmental Assets Profile (DAP)
A closer look at individuals and small groups… When you need to narrow your focus from the big picture of young people in your community to a small group or individual youth, the Developmental Assets Profile (DAP) may be the right tool. The DAP measures the eight asset categories in a way that’s quickly administered and scored. Unlike our other tools, the DAP is scored by the administrator (not Search Institute), which means added flexibility. In addition to looking at the data from the asset category perspective, the data can also be scored within five context areas. You can assess how youth are faring personally, socially, and within the family, school, and community contexts.
