Sample Activities Collage of Dreams

Under Construction

Time: Varies

Time: One hour

Supplies: Old magazines, Newspapers, Scissors, Glue sticks, Markers, Heavy cardboard, Decorative items

Find a structure under construction—a bridge, a small building, a skyscraper—and watch the building activity. Stay well away from any restricted or hard-hat-required areas; you can learn a lot just by observing from across the street. If you can, find out more about the project on the Internet, in the newspaper, or, if it’s permitted, by asking someone at the site.

Cut out images and words from old magazines and newspapers and glue them onto a piece of sturdy cardboard. Create a collage of images and ideas that evoke the dreams you have for your future. It can represent your own future, the future of your family or community, or even the future of the planet. Work together on one collage, or work separately on your own projects and discuss them afterward. Think about It • What kinds of hopes and dreams do you have for the future? • Why did you choose a particular image or word for your collage? • How can you make your dreams a reality? • What steps can you take today to make your dreams happen?

Think about It • How many different jobs do you see happening at the building site? • How do things like the time of year, the available workers, and the budget affect the construction plans? • Is there anything here that you could see yourself doing? Crane operator? Architect? Welder? Engineer?

Abbreviated sample from Unit Two—Experiencing Books When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry by Molly Bang From the authors of Great Group Games!

Audience: Educators, Youth-Serving Professionals of Grades K–3 81/2 x 11, 144 pages, paperback, includes CD-ROM with reproducible pages, $29.95 ISBN 13: 978-157482-269-4 Pub Date: October 2009 Susan Ragsdale is a leadership development trainer and Developmental Assets specialist for the YMCA. She has worked with the Points of Light Foundation, has led a statewide youth council, and has directed camps and conferences. She lives in Pleasant View, Tennessee.

When Sophie’s sister grabs Sophie’s stuffed gorilla from her, Sophie gets so angry that she throws a tantrum and runs off into the woods by herself. She finds comfort by climbing a beech tree, from which she can gaze at the water and feel soothed. She is able to return to her family with a calmer outlook. Let’s Talk • What do you do when you’re really, really mad? • What are some good ways to make yourself less angry? • Is it ever OK for you to run off by yourself without telling your parents or teachers where you are going? (After some discussion, say: It’s OK to try to make yourself less angry, but the adults who care about you also want to make sure you’re safe and help you get over whatever made you mad.) Explore More • Role-play situations that might make kids angry, and let the children express both healthy and inappropriate responses to the anger. • Ask: What is something you sometimes do that makes another person angry? Is it a kind thing to do? How can you remember to be kind in the future? • Have the children draw a picture of themselves doing something that makes them feel less angry. Additional talking points and ideas provided

FRONTLIST Launching Your Teen into Adulthood Parenting through the Transition by Patricia Hoolihan

Using this thoughtful guide, parents can help older teens confidently navigate the issues and developmental transitions that will inevitably arise as they prepare to leave home. This road map for mentoring and advising young people to make good choices from a positive, strengthbased perspective covers such topics as finding a good fit for school and work, dealing with money, living independently, setting goals, caring for personal needs, dealing with emotional challenges, handling new relationships, and developing a future-focused orientation. Each chapter also includes checklists, interviews, and resource sheets for parents and teens to help prepare for and succeed in this important life transition.

Sample checklist from chapter on staying connected When your teen leaves home 1. Talk about healthy ways to communicate when your teen leaves home. Ask what works best and seems most comfortable for him: Cell phone? E-mail? Instant messaging? Snail mail? Or a combination? 2. Remember, at times your teen will just need to hear your voice (and you may just need to hear her voice, too). The actual topic of discussion is often less important. 3. Identify the interests you share with your teen. Use them as a way to form a deeper connection when you are together.Together, you could run a race, work in the yard, hit golf balls on the driving range, work on a car engine, or attend a play or concert. 4. Make your plans in advance so that you can both anticipate and look forward to your shared time. 5. Plan a special meal or outing to celebrate milestones (completing a first semester, landing a new job, juggling school and work successfully). 6. If you can, plan a trip with your child, even just for the weekend. Ask him to share in making the plans.

Now, you can easily join the thousands of youth and adults who are together exploring and charting the new territory of transforming our culture with and for young people—putting the “assets in action.” Within these pages you’ll find the collective wisdom and experience of activists in dozens of asset-building initiatives in the United States and Canada combined with findings from Search Institute’s in-depth case studies of four diverse initiatives.
