Anatomy & Textures
Capturing Movement
Building on previous topics, we are going to look at adding a simple but structural anatomical framework. No matter what the creature, the muscle and skeletal structure stays basically the same. Similar forms and muscular connections reappear constantly and change depending on the effects of the animal’s actions and anatomical dynamics. Learning to match this wisdom with a wide, expressive array of lines in your artwork gives you the ability to draw with confidence.
In animal drawing, the search for implied movement is an essential element. The primary step is to capture the animal, whether at rest or in motion, in series of rhythmic gestural lines and forms. The flexible lines and forms create a structure, as a wire armature does for a sculpture. These rhythmic marks create a flexible framework to hang balance, action, and form onto. This simplistic approach that allows more creative choices.

Sketch the shadows
Find your focus
When you are observing light, of course you’re also seeing shadows.
Something attracts you to a scene, and that becomes the focus of your sketch. In a sense, you build your sketch around what interests you—and this is what’s often called the “center of interest”. It’s also a “focal point”, because you want to draw the viewer’s eye to the thing that you are most interested in. A dynamic composition will generally have a strong focal point, and lead the eye to it in a variety of interesting ways.
The shape, color, and density of shadows changes with the weather, the season, and the time of day. Just as the effects of light on the landscape are changing all the time, so are the shadows. I like to observe shadows even when I’m not sketching—I think it’s a good habit to notice how varied and changeable shadows really are in all kinds of weather and every season.
Tips to get you started
