Game preview
T
his week, the Wai`anae Seariders look forward to kicking off the season with a win against the Kamehameha Warriors under the direction of their new head coach, Walter Young. An alumnus of Wai`anae High School, class of 1998, Young was a student athlete with the position of offensive end. After high school he decided to further his education at Whitworth University in Washington where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education . After completing college, Young returned to his alma mater in 2003 to teach math and coach football. With 13 years of experience as a junior varsity coach, Young coached a record of six and two in 2013 and eight and one in 2014, where the JV team was recognized as the Junior Varsity Champions. He believes that setting an example for these team players is important. “My vision is to see these young men grow up to become future
leaders in society by being the best student-athletes on and off the field...This is where I grew up, so it’s real nice to give back to the community.” said Young, who coached alongside the previous head coach, Danny Matsumoto, last school year. “I feel we’ll keep the traditions the same. This generation’s a little different, but we can still use the same things we believed then right now.” Last year’s game against the Kamehameha Warriors was canceled due to the weather conditions of double Hurricane Iselle and Julio. Yet again, the weather forecast this week warns us about a tropical storm Guillermo. In any case, mother nature won’t stop the Seariders this year. “I feel like we are ready for this week, all the boys have been practicing hard and giving their all. We just need to stay confident,” said defensive end Joey Nu`uanu-Kuhi`iki. No matter what the forecast is, the Seariders are ready to play ball.

band is back
For the last eight years, Wai`anae High School was without a band class. This forced students who were eager to play to look elsewhere to participate in a band. For WHS junior, Taylen Kea, this meant participating in the Wai`anae Intermediate Marching Band. “I played the trumpet and flute in the marching band from 7-10th grade. I wanted to be in the high school band, but the band was not really recognized yet. So I went to volunteer with the intermediate band in the mean time,” Taylen Kea said. This is no longer an issue; starting this school year, band is once again a class that can be taken at WHS rather than only being an after school extracurricular activity Wai`anae High School alum and volunteer for the Wai`anae Intermediate Marching band, ShantellTiare Tom, has excitedly stepped up to lead the class here at WHS. “I volunteered with the band for five years. I was considered a mentor there to the students and Taylen as well,” Tom said. Taylen has learned to play multiple instruments including the flute, the clarinet, and the trumpet. Considering how much skill and background she has in the field, Taylen was made drum major in WHS band. As the Drum Major she is giving out commands and making sure everything runs smoothly. “Its amazing,” Tom said, “how shy she is and that out of all the people here they all listen to her. With Taylen in charge the band always stays in rhythm.”
