Minutes from the Saltburn Improvement Company Wednesday 13th November 1867 ‘A letter is read from the Solicitor to the proposed “Pier and Hoist Company” asking on what terms the Company will sell the Pier Coy certain land, the following resolution is agreed to. The Improvement Company to sell the fee simple in the quantity of land required for the Hoist – about 7 yards by 7 - for £5 and to grant a right of way in perpetuity, 12 ft wide from Britannia Terrace to the front of the Sea-wall for which a payment of £1 per annum is to be made, but the Pier Co shall not at any time place any erection or construction on the Sea wall. The Improvement Company reserves the right of making roads or footpaths from or across the land to be granted.’
