Water, water, everywhere

Storm photo - lighthouse Porthcawl

Dear Editor, My offerings this month, “Water, water, everywhere!” Kind regards, Anthony Callaghan, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, I would like to share this photo I took of the lighthouse, Porthcawl during the recent

stormy seas with your readers. Thanking you in anticipation. Joan Pugsley, North Cornelly

Regeneration Once again BCBC has failed in their dealings to bring a supermarket to Porthcawl. To fail once in such a major and important transaction is rare, but to fail a second time is sensational. BCBC claim the reason Morrisons pulled out at the last moment was they wanted to reduce their national capital budget for 2014/2015. The loss of Morrisons will have an adverse effect on the existing regeneration plans for Porthcawl and will cause further delays to the project. We have waited over 40 years for the regeneration of Porthcawl and so far have had nothing but false promises. This is in complete contrast to the £100 million spent on the regeneration of other areas in the Borough – but when it comes to Porthcawl BCBC always state that there are no funds available. The mystery is this only applies to

Porthcawl and not to the other areas in the borough. They did however pay £1 million towards the improvements to the harbour, but this is peanuts compared to the £6 million spent on upgrading an existing swimming pool. The good news is that the Welsh Government is considering and proposing that BCBC amalgamate with Neath Port Talbot and possibly Swansea. If this materialised it would release us from the control and biased principals of BCBC. You never know, under this new council we might at last obtain a swimming pool, sports centre and bus station. On a pleasant subject – congratulations to Gary Victor for his successful fight campaign to replace existing seats in John Street with new ones. They look very smart and require low maintenance. BCBC regeneration funding Dear Editor, Recently the Glamorgan Gazette featured an interesting story regarding leftover regeneration money from Maesteg being used to cover an overspend in the Porthcawl harbour project (13/2/14). In this article former BCBC Labour leader Jeff Jones made a very revealing statement. Quote: “I would like to know which politician decided to take £127,000 out of Maesteg, which has loyally supported the Labour Party. But this shows contempt for the democratic process.” Is Mr Jones suggesting that places in the borough who habitually vote Labour are entitled to special treatment by Labour administrations? If so, this might explain why places like Bridgend and his native Maesteg have

received so much funding for regeneration and leisure facilities since the formation of BCBC in the mid 1990s, whereas Porthcawl, who has always tended to vote for anyone except Labour, has had so little. By considering the voting habits of its residents when allocating funding to an area, I would suggest that it is Mr Jones himself who has shown “contempt for the democratic process”. And this is a man who now makes his living as a local government consultant! I suppose that we in Porthcawl must continue to sit and hope that the current Labour administration takes a more enlightened, less tribalistic view. Yours sincerely, Jerry Asper, Porthcawl

Have your say or send in your pictures Email: info@seasidenews.co.uk A steelworker and his choir say thank you Dear Editor, A steelworker is lucky to be alive after suffering horrific injuries in an accident at work in Port Talbot steelworks in August 2012. Michael Down, of Kenfig Hill, clinically died twice before being revived in the air

ambulance on its way to the University Hospital in Cardiff. He suffered severe injuries, including a triple skull fracture and a broken arm and leg. He was in a coma for around eight weeks. Seaside News | 10

Eighteen months on, the 64-year-old tenor Mike, who is also known by the name Clive, is back singing with Kenfig Hill and District Male Voice Choir. Members of his choir are “on top of the world” to have him back singing.“They’re probably my best friends,” Mr Down said. Out of recognition of the Wales Air Ambulance Service, who no doubt saved his life, Clive together with Kenfig Hill and District Male Voice Choir are staging a Grand Charity Evening in Bethlehem Life Centre, Cefn Cribwr on 12th April, with all proceeds going to the Wales Air Ambulance Service. Tickets are available from choir members or call 01443 229227. Details of those taking part will be in next month’s Seaside News. Harold Phillips, Kenfig Hill

Porthcawl Primary news At the moment we are working hard towards becoming a level 1 ‘Rights Respecting School’. The Rights Respecting School Award is an initiative run by UNICEF UK, which encourages schools to place the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of its ethos and curriculum. We have recently made two of our pupils ‘Rights Respecting Schools Ambassadors’. They have the very important job of promoting rights around our school. Every month they choose a ‘Right of the Month’ then set the rest of the school a challenge. This month they linked the right to St David’s

Day and have challenged everyone to learn the Welsh national anthem. Their next job will be to do a secret mission for the Children’s Commissioner for Wales. We also have a very busy ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ mascot. Pyrsi the Seagull was created by our Year 6 pupils and he is currently turning up in different places all around the school. He was last seen outside Mrs Humphrey’s ofďŹ ce keeping an eye on the front door! He also now has his own blog on our website so our pupils can ask him questions linked to their rights. Kind hearts at Pencoed Comprehensive School Pencoed Comprehensive School’s Interact charity fundraising group planned a very successful Red Top Day on Friday 7th February. Supported by their fellow pupils in the 6th form, members of the group decided to organise fundraising activities in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Rhian Price, one of the Interact group members said, “Because one of our friends, Chloe Thompson in the 6th form, suffers from a congenital heart disorder we felt very strongly that we should support this particular charityâ€?. ÂŁ450 was raised through various activities including donations from pupils and staff for the privilege of wearing red tops, sales of badges and other items as well as competitions. Another very kind hearted 6th former is Jacob Davies. On his own initiative, Jacob planned his own bungee jump last December raising ÂŁ810 for his friend Liam Davies. Liam, a Year 11 pupil at the school, is wheelchair bound as a result of suffering from Friedrich Ataxia.

Liam’s mother, Mrs Davies said “As a family we’re truly amazed at what Jacob has done. He’s a true and generous friend to Liam. We’re also very glad at the awareness raised by Jacob in the local community

Our school eisteddfod proved to be great fun again this year with all pupils taking part in house competitions ranging from singing to gargling groups! The children provided more ‘serious’ entertainment for our ‘Cawl a Chân’ St David’s evening hosted by the PTA. Newton Primary School It has been another busy month in our school. We have been working hard caring for our environment and planet earth. We can proudly announce that we have been awarded our 3rd Green Flag! Thank you to our hardworking Eco Committee and all who were involved. Year 4 also took part in a beach clean with Keep Wales Tidy. We were shocked at how much rubbish was on the beach! Remember everyone recycle your rubbish when possible! We run a Global Cafe in our school every month, we sell only Fairtrade products. This is a great success, a treat for children and staff, while helping farmers and their families to have a better lifestyle in other countries! Year 3 enjoyed sharing reading

(along with squash, tea and biscuits) with family members during our reading café, it was lovely to see so many parents support and encourage their children in the lifelong skill of reading. Reception, Years 1 and 2 concluded their topic ‘Electric Rainbow’ and the celebration of light by holding a special christingle family service with Father Craig at All Saints Church. Team Newton have been busy organising lots of exciting events including cake sales, discos and pamper nights, all of which have continued to raising extra funds for exciting new resources, including 25 iPads. We are looking forward to using these to enhance all areas of the curriculum. Rachel John (Acting Head)

Schools supporting Fairtrade With the severe weather that has been affecting the UK, the environment and global warming is currently a hot topic. And, our local schools are leading the way with being eco-friendly. Many local schoolchildren have been supporting Fairtrade products through participating in a range of Fairtrade Fortnight events and activities. Twenty of our schools have achieved Fairtrade status, and Nottage Primary is certainly a fair trader, having recently obtained the status for the third time. A Fairtrade steering group of pupils, staff and parents has been formed at the school, which runs various events such

as afternoon tea parties and a weekly Fairtrade shop. Parents even have the option to buy Fairtrade uniforms for pupils. Elsewhere in the county borough, pupils at Blaengarw Primary have recently proved their green credentials through obtaining a Platinum Green Flag. The school has built an ecogreenhouse using 1,000 plastic bottles to grow plants for its garden, and has also promoted Fairtrade with a banana skin flinging competition. I’d like to say a big well done to all local children and young people who are doing their bit for the environment, and encourage them to keep finding new ways to be green.

It may only be February as I write this, but pupils in Year 11 will soon be deciding on their subject choices for Years 12 and 13. Our courses are designed to offer the best possible pathways to learners of all abilities and interests, and we now have the largest ever number of pupils studying with us at KS5. Why not come and see for yourselves? Our Year 11 Options Evening will be held on 5th March, and ALL parents and carers of pupils currently in Year 11, wherever they are currently studying, will be welcomed to see for themselves why our provision is so good, and

how the warmth and support of our staff create a unique environment in which young people thrive. Another date for your diaries is the evening of Wednesday, 19th March, when we will be holding our Annual Eisteddfod concert to showcase some of the musical, literary and artistic abilities of our pupils. This year Miss Geddes and Miss Sebury will again be ensuring that no-one goes away feeling less than inspired by the innovation on offer in this really vibrant department. As always, it will be lovely to see you. Hannah Castle, Head teacher

Porthcawl Comprehensive School It has been a busy few weeks at PCS culminating in more success for our students; we have enjoyed gymnastic success with our girls who competed in the Welsh Schools’ Floor and Vault Championships. Over 300 gymnasts were involved and the girls performed brilliantly, winning the event. Now Welsh Champions, they go on to represent Wales in the British Championships in May. Congratulations to: Paige Sheen (Year 7), Asia Farnworth (Year 7), Nia Eales (Year 8), Skylar Evans (Year 8), Stepheny Chilcott (Year 8). Further success came with Megan Goldberger participating in the regional final of ‘Future Chef’. Megan did excellently and is clearly a

talent for the future. Maintaining our excellent musical tradition, Alexandra Hunt and Lauren Pugh reached the regional semi-finals of the Rotary Young Musician Competition. Again we are immensely proud of both girls, well done. Recently we enjoyed a visit from Peter Black AM who spent a morning with us discussing many issues with our Sixth Form ‘Head Team’. Students found it interesting to speak with an AM and were keen to explore the workings of local politics. Thanks to everyone at school for their efforts over the last half term – come back recharged after the break! Andrew Slade, Head teacher

NEWS Porthcawl Town Council news The Christmas lighting in Porthcawl last year received many compliments, with lots of praise being given to both Newton Nottage and Dan Y Graig roundabouts. Unfortunately during the Christmas holidays the lighting on Newton Nottage roundabout was badly damaged through deliberate vandalism. The Town Council purchased the lighting for the roundabout at a cost of £3,488 to create a vibrant display for people in the town. However, due to the selfish, pointless action of a person(s), the lighting will now need to be repaired, or it may even need to be replaced completely! It seems strange that someone

would put their safety in jeopardy by vandalising lighting which is connected to a power source and could cause serious personal harm. Also, that someone would wish the Town Council to now have to consider spending even more money in one area, when this money could be utilised to improve another area in the town. It is disappointing, after much effort being put into making Porthcawl look lovely for Christmas, that the actions of this person(s) is going to cost the people of Porthcawl. It is a very disappointing start to the New Year. Alison Thomas Town Clerk, Porthcawl Town Council

Your perfect day What would your perfect day out in Bridgend County Borough be like? For some, it might include an expensive meal in a local restaurant while for others it could be as simple as a walk along the Esplanade with the family and a bag of chips. From the coastline to the countryside, the county borough has lots to offer. That’s why Bridgend County Borough Council and the Bridgend Tourism Association have teamed up for a new campaign called ‘Perfect Day’ which is asking people to share the local places and activities that they love the most. To illustrate this, a number of

videos have been produced at the Bridgend Bites website, one of which features Porthcawl surfer Hugh Murray talking about his love of Rest Bay and how the waves there could give surfing hotspots in Cornwall and West Wales a run for their money. Visitors to the site who leave details about their own perfect day and vote for their favourite video could also win a fantastic prize. The campaign is encouraging as many people as possible to take part, so why not take a closer look? Simply visit www. bridgendbites.com/perfect-day, and let people know what your own perfect day would be.

The need for the regeneration of Porthcawl Recently I met representatives of Porthcawl First to discuss the latest developments regarding Bridgend Council’s regeneration plans for Porthcawl. Like many others I am concerned as to what is going to happen now that Morrisons supermarket has pulled out. Without an anchor store it is questionable whether the council will be able to raise the funds to pay for the infrastructure works necessary to develop this part of the town. There is an understandable sense of grievance amongst Porthcawl residents. They pay the highest council tax of any part of the county borough and yet, consistently, investment decisions pass

them buy. Large amounts of public money have been invested in regenerating other communities in the Bridgend council area, yet when it comes to Porthcawl, the local authority relies on securing capital receipts from commercial investment. What is important if we are to rescue this situation is that all parties engage with each other in a positive way. Certainly, members of Porthcawl First expressed a desire to do so and as a result of this discussion I am now meeting with senior officers in Bridgend Council to get a briefing on how they plan to take regeneration forward and to offer what assistance I can.

Porthcawl’s regeneration Porthcawl’s regeneration will soon reach a new milestone with the official opening of the new marina next month. Now that it is fully operational with 65 permanent berths and five that are available for visitors, the marina can provide a catalyst for attracting other investments into the town. Historic buildings near to the marina could soon be transformed too as we will find out in the next couple of weeks how we have fared in our bid for Townscape Heritage Initiative Funding from the Heritage Lottery. If we are successful, one million pounds will be available towards restoring selected buildings of architectural or historical

interest to their former glory, and bringing some back into use. One of those due for resurrection is the Grade II listed Jennings building, which is now being marketed to potential developers and occupiers, and we have been encouraged by the interest shown so far. Following the disappointing news that Morrisons has withdrawn their interest in the superstore development we are currently considering our next steps. The marketing process remains active, we are speaking with the reserve bidder and we will make an announcement once we have fully explored our options.

Porthcawl harbour - almost £900K overspent News that the work on upgrading Porthcawl harbour is almost £900K overspent should ring alarm bells with council taxpayers. As Shadow Regeneration Minister, I am very pleased that after years of inaction, BCBC decided to grasp the nettle and embark on the scheme to transform the old harbour into a marina. However, there were problems from day one with the scheme. Boat owners claim that they were in talks with the council for seven years but when the final scheme was presented, what they told the council was ignored. The council did not plan to install electricity hook-ups in

every berth and they also had no plans for toilets. Eventually, portable toilets were proposed and the boat owners were asked to contribute to the costs of installing the electricity. So when the council says now that it was hit by unforeseen costs, I am not surprised if its original plans did not even cover the provision of basic things like toilets and power. BCBC has a terrible track record on consultation. Everywhere I go, people complain that the council does not listen to what they say. Instead, they are told what’s going to happen. This has to stop otherwise these expensive fiascos will continue.

FEATURES Great players of Welsh rugby #1 Jehoida Hodges played in three Triple Crown teams in the 1900s, the first Golden Era of Welsh rugby, and against New Zealand in 1905, a game that established Wales as the

world champions. Furthermore, he was fast enough to play on the wing and contemporary reports state that he was an all-round player who could ‘do everything a rugby player should be able to do’. He won twenty-three caps from 1899 – 1906 and, in 1903, he was pressed into service as an

emergency wing and scored three tries versus England. #2 Square-shouldered and bony-kneed Bryn Meredith won 34 caps for Wales and went on three British and Irish Lions tours in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a skilful, spring-heeled runner, a sevens player and a gifted handler of the ball. As a Lion in 1955 in South Africa, he scored a try in the corner after first hooking the ball in the scrum to start the movement. Against France in 1962, a scrum went down with Bryn unprepared; he was standing upright amongst fifteen crouching forwards yet, unsighted, he hooked the ball clean from the scrum. Porthcawl Parkinson’s news In the January meeting of the Porthcawl Parkinson’s Support Group, Mrs Ceri Roberts gave us a talk on “Rationing”. Mrs Roberts told us how in 1936 government officials were talking about food rationing. It wasn’t until 1940, during the war, that rationing actually happened. At first, food was rationed, with 3 rashers of bacon, 2 ounces of butter and 8 ounces of sugar per person, per week. Later as the war bit into the economy, things like clothes and furniture became rationed. At the time, many of our group

were children, taking it all in our stride, we never went hungry our mothers were good at their jobs and provided for us. The only thing that really hit us was when sweets went onto this ever-increasing list. We could not believe it and it was not until 1952, that with some relief, sweet rationing ceased. After Ceri had finished her talk, we all had many memories of rationing to recollect and stories to tell. For further information contact 01656 783071. Rob Charlesworth

Through Christian eyes After thinking and praying about what to share this month I felt God prompting me to write briefly about loneliness. Loneliness has been called ‘the great modern sickness of the soul’. Loneliness can be a terrible thing and those who have experienced it know how bad it can be. I want to encourage all those who feel lonely by saying that Jesus wants to come close to you. Take this message as if from him and not merely from me. I guess it would be worth clarifying that Jesus is certainly alive and real today, and that He

knows all about how you feel. Turn to Him and allow Him to help you in that area. There are many, many people who have been right where you are and have found rest, comfort and healing in knowing God. God is the one who makes our lives complete and that is certainly something that every person needs. No-one has it all figured out. A prayer to pray: Lord, I want to turn to you and know your presence in my life which makes me whole. Help me to give it all over and find rest in you. Neil Harvey

Water detected on dwarf planet Ceres The spacecraft called Dawn, which has spent more than a year orbiting the large asteroid Vesta, is now on its way to Ceres, where it is scheduled to arrive in the spring of 2015. For more than a century, Ceres was known as the largest asteroid in the Solar System, but in 2006 it was re-classified as a ‘dwarf planet’ because of its large size - roughly 950 km in diameter. When it was discovered in 1801, astronomers thought that it was a planet orbiting between Mars and Jupiter. Later, objects with similar orbits were found, marking the discovery of the Solar System’s main belt of asteroids. Scientists think that Ceres contains rock in its

interior, with a thick mantle of ice that, if melted, would amount to more fresh water than exists on the Earth. The materials making up Ceres probably date from the first few million years of the Solar System’s existence, before the planets formed. Scientists using the Herschel infrared space observatory have recently detected water vapour on Ceres. Until now, ice had been thought to exist on Ceres but had not been detected conclusively. When Dawn arrives, we can hope to learn a lot more. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

Porthcawl Inner Wheel news Many Porthcawl Inner Wheel members and Rotarians attended our service in Trinity Church in January to mark International Day. Our club had bought a loading buggy for the ‘Tools for Self Reliance’ workshop in Fenton Place whose volunteers restore tools for use in Africa, and this was blessed at the service. Our January speaker from the Stroke Association gave an informative talk on how to assist in an emergency and how to recognise the signs of a stroke. He was presented with a cheque for the Association. We look forward to our birthday party with Porthcawl Rotarians in February when we celebrate 64 years as a club.

This will take place in the Hi Tide and includes a dinner and entertainment. We are also going to the Pavilion to see Abbamania and have arranged a trip to Cardiff to see Wicked. On 26th March at 10.30am at the Atlantic Hotel we have a coffee morning in aid of local charities. There will be stalls and a raffle and all are welcome to attend. Our club continues to grow and we are pleased that our president Carol Lowery has been awarded a bronze medal for RNLI fundraising. Congratulations Carol. Janice Jones Club Correspondent

BirdWatch: hedgehog Hedgehogs, recently voted the UK’s favourite wild animal, are now starting to wake up from hibernation. You don’t need to see this nocturnal creature to know that one has been in your garden – look out for their black droppings (around 5 cm long by 1 cm wide). If you

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Phil Powell feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Porthcawl, Bridgend & the surrounding area and 3KLO LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor

in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

WI & GUILD NEWS Porthcawl WI news Porthcawl WI has decided to branch out and will now be holding two meetings a month. We think this will be very beneďŹ cial for our Women’s Institute as we are still only a year old and this extra meeting will encourage members to get together and form new interests. Also it will enhance our WI and our ladies can meet socially as well, and form new friendships. Already this year a few of our ladies took part in a whist competition and although they didn’t win they had a fun afternoon. There are lots of different events during the year that members can

Newton WI news get involved in - there is something for everyone. Also our president Mary Tashara and our secretary attended the Mayor’s party for volunteers at the Y Centre Porthcawl, and this was an amazing afternoon. So if you would like to come along to one of our meetings, you will be assured of a very warm welcome. We meet on the second and fourth Thursday of the month at 2pm in All Saints Church hall, Porthcawl. If you have any queries and are thinking of joining us ring Gwen on 01656 783238. Gwen Stapleton (Secretary)

News from Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild Since my last report we have been coping with the weather and enjoying our various group activities, the most popular being our monthly lunch which was this time at Beales Fish emporium - always a popular venue. A cinema visit was also enjoyed and a small coffee morning to get to know new members. Our February Guild meeting was held on the worst day so far but attendance was good considering the conditions. Mr Brian HaberďŹ eld gave a beautiful presentation of his visits to Madeira, Venice and Bruges. He is always a very welcome speaker. Our next

meeting is our AGM on 12th March, 2.00p.m. at All Saints Church hall All welcome - for more information ring 772157. But before that is our 60th Diamond Birthday lunch to which we are all greatly looking forward. Dorothy Thomas

Despite the bad weather nearly 50 ladies came to the Wednesday meeting. Pearl welcomed us and said how much we had enjoyed our lunch in The Fairways. There was quite a crowd as the Mothers Union ladies were in the same room. The vicar was completely outnumbered! We

had a good walk in Aberavon and an even better lunch in Remos after. Our next outing is to lunch at the golf cub, then later onto the Lion King musical in Cardiff. Ladies why not join us, you are sure of a welcome. Call Pearl 772657 or Pat 788003. Patricia Theodore

Mynydd CynfďŹ g WI Thursday 11th February was the second meeting of 2014. It’s still raining and our church hall roof is still not ďŹ nished, so once again we must thank the Talbot Institute for allowing us to hold our meeting there. In spite of short notice we had a good turnout of members, our meeting was chaired by our president Marjory Goode, minutes and letters of thanks were read by our secretary Enid Rymer. Forthcoming events and trips were ďŹ nalised and members were pleased to hear that Iolo Williams is the guest speaker at the federation AGM. The competition cup for

2013 was won by our treasurer Eirwen De Vries. Our president welcomed our guest speaker Sylvia Tilley whose talk and slide show on Denman Collage gave us a good insight to what the collage has to offer. A vote of thanks was given by Gill Williams. The meeting ďŹ nished with tea and biscuits, our next meeting is on 11th March 2014 and rain allowing will be in the Pyle and KenďŹ g Church hall. The W.I. is the largest voluntary woman’s organisation in the UK. Join us and become part of this great movement. Christine Callaghan

FINANCE Something for nothing

Lifetime Allowance (LTA) changes

At the time of writing this, we have a lull in the battering we’ve had from the weather in the last two months, so it’s time for something positive. At Cambria Financial we take many calls every week regarding all sorts of financial queries, from mortgages to pensions to investments, all of which are dealt with by a fully qualified professional to whom the enquiry is referred. However, certain services and products seem taboo, as they deal with death, especially where this causes a major financial trauma for the family; or they are something that you know little about but don’t wish to ask. So, we’ve decided to provide a respectful incentive by inviting you to talk to us and take some action for you and your family’s benefit and get something of absolute importance should a death occur in your family. Call us about Life Assurance, Mortgages, Equity Release, Pensions, Investments or Funeral Plans, between now and the end of April, and when you take out any of these

From 6th April 2014 the LTA will reduce from £1.5 million to £1.25 million. It applies to an individual’s entire pension savings (apart from the State Pension). If your pension savings are worth more than the LTA when you take your benefits, you’ll have to pay a tax charge on the amount above the LTA unless you have some form of protection. The rate depends on how this excess is paid to you. If the amount over the LTA is paid as a lump sum, the rate is 55%. If it is paid as pension, the rate is 25%. You can protect yourself from paying the LTA charge by applying for ‘Fixed Protection’, which effectively caps your LTA at £1.5 million. The scheme, termed by HMRC as Fixed Protection 2014, allows savers with pensions likely to exceed the £1.25 million cap to apply, before the deadline of 6th April 2014, for an extension to the limit. Applying for the protection will benefit

those near to retirement and wanting to maximise the value of their pot, as well as savers who expect the value of their pension to grow in excess of £1.25 million without making any new contributions. It is important to establish how much money you have accumulated in pension schemes from all previous employment as well as any current schemes. This can be tricky for schemes which are or were linked to your final salary. It’s easy to underestimate just how valuable a final salary pension is. You could be surprised to learn, for example, that a £25,000 per annum paid-up pension from a previous job already eats up £500,000 of your allowance. If you would like to discuss how to arrange the protection of your pension savings, please contact us at One Life Financial Planning Ltd. Chris Ellis

Understanding your pension’s tax year allowance There are different rules for private pensions than there are for government backed ones, but what’s really allowed? What is my annual allowance limit? The current annual allowance is £50,000 with full tax relief. From 2014-15 the government is planning on dropping the allowance to £40,000. These changes will affect pension savings in all registered schemes including overseas pension schemes that qualify for UK tax relief. Seaside News | 30

What happens if I exceed this limit? You may have to pay an annual allowance tax charge, you can check here: http:// www.hmrc.gov.uk/tools/ annualallowancelimit/ question1.htm Is there a limit to how much I can contribute? No. You can save as much as you like towards your pension every year, however only a set allowance will receive tax relief. When you hit this maximum pension amount you

may have to pay a tax charge for further contributions. Carrying allowances forward you may be able to bring your annual allowance for your pension contribution forward if you haven’t hit in the previous three tax years. However, if you have been contributing £50,000 for previous years then you’ll have to pay a tax charge in excess of the

£50,000 allowance. You may be able to ask your scheme administrator to pay the tax in exchange for a reduction in your pension pot. If you’re looking for more pension and tax planning advice then Bartholomew Hawkins can help you 029 2050 8000 visit our website. Ian Davies

Cefn Cribbwr Gardening Club With a least one day of snow forecast for us and 35mm of rain expected things don’t seem to be getting a lot better! Though there will be some warmer days, so get cracking on the spring jobs around the garden. It’s time to relocate your evergreen shrubs (I’m moving mine again!) Renovate climbers before they start growing, yet while they have buds so you can see where stems are dead. Honeysuckles, ivies and rambling roses can be cut back hard. Plant early potatoes and onion sets. If growing onions sets on deep beds plant them about

8cm apart, the onions grown maybe smaller but you will achieve a higher overall yield! If it is wet keep off the lawn! Damage to waterlogged lawns is easily inflicted and irritatingly hard to rectify, when it dries out (if it ever does!) give it a first cut with blades on the highest setting. Top tip - Place a few slices of cucumber in a small pie tin and you will be free of pests all season, the chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminium to give of a scent, it drives pests crazy and they flee the area! LEGAL Changes in the law will give pre-nups legal standing Plans are afoot to change the law so that pre-nuptial agreements will become legally binding in England and Wales. Until now, unlike in certain foreign jurisdictions, such agreements have not been legally enforceable in this country. The proposed changes will have the effect of reducing the amount of damaging and expensive court battles between divorcing couples as they will have a clear idea at the outset of the ďŹ nancial implications of divorce. Experts predict a surge in enquiries about this type of agreement which among other things will allow couples to ring fence property which they bring into a marriage and prevent it being shared upon divorce. A recent survey among solicitors shows that some 83% of those questioned conďŹ rmed that they had been asked to advise on a prenuptial agreement in the last year. There is undoubtedly an increase in popularity of such agreements, especially in

the light of a 2010 Supreme Court case which ruled that judges could take pre-nuptial agreements into account if certain conditions were met. If couples are given the opportunity of entering into an agreement before marriage, there is less likelihood that they will have to resort to court if the relationship fails. The proposals also allow for safeguards to prevent one spouse being left in need in the event of a divorce and recommend that both parties take independent advice before entering into such agreements. Therefore it is certainly worth considering a pre-nuptial agreement if you are about to marry and have property which was yours prior to marriage. The proposed changes will mean that such agreements are likely to be upheld should your relationship break down in the future. If you have any queries regarding this issue, please contact us. SHARES or ASSETS? When you want to sell or acquire a business, you have two main options: Business Transfer or Share Transfer. Sheraz Akram weighs up the pros and cons “It’s important you carefully consider the legal and taxation implications -this means getting professional advisors involved early on.â€? If you chose a Share Transfer, the purchaser will be buying your shares in the company but if you chose a Business Transfer, only the assets are transferred to the purchaser. The two structures are fundamentally different, so which is right for you? Business Transfer Pros The purchaser is generally exposed to less risk. If the seller is a company, unless there is an arrangement to the contrary, any warranties or indemnities contained in any agreement will be given by the company and not the shareholder. Cons The purchaser will need to ensure that every aspect of the business is legally transferred - including any properties, employees or contracts. This involves third parties and, consequently, more legal and management input. The seller will need to tidy up the entity that held the business. This can mean closing a company down, stripping out any cash and chasing unpaid debts. Share Transfer Pros All of the business and assets will remain held by the target company and the purchaser simply steps into the shoes of the selling shareholder(s). So there is no need for the assets of the company to be transferred to the purchaser. The company will no longer belong to the sellers at the end of the transaction and so the purchaser will inherit any problems (such as outstanding liabilities/ debts) that exist at the date of sale. Cons This is generally more risky for the purchaser, so the contract and transaction are more involved with more warranties and indemnities included. The seller will be giving the warranties/indemnities personally as the seller. Which option you choose may be dictated by the taxation position of the parties. Before making any decision, it’s important that you carefully consider the legal and taxation implications Ăą this means getting professional advisors involved early on. In Short: â—? When you want to sell or buy a business, there are two common options: BusinessTransfer or Share Transfer â—? A Business Transfer is generally a less risky option, but involves more legal and management input â—? A Shares Transfer is more risky because the purchaser will inherit any problems â—? A look back at 2013 for the Silver Generation! 2013 saw advances in research and significant steps being taken to offer support to those suffering with dementia and their families. The most recent research led to Doctors suggesting that not taking ‘dubious drugs’ but adopting a Mediterranean style lifestyle rich in fruit, vegetables, nuts and fish could reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, one of the most common forms of dementia. This follows research by Cardiff University which found that those who consistently follow four healthy habits such as eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables; keeping slim; exercising; drinking lightly; and not smoking can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by 60%. This followed research published on 30 September 2013 by the British Medical Journal stating that women who suffer from a lot of stress in middle age may increase their risk of developing dementia in later life. Figures published by the Alzheimer’s Society suggest that within the next 20 years, more than 1 million people in the UK will have dementia, with one in five people over 85 already suffering. Figures also released suggest that 54% of sufferers go undiagnosed. On 29th July 2013 the Alzheimer’s Society also launched a new booklet to help guide people with dementia and their carers through their journey with dementia. The guide is the first of its kind to provide the information needed after a diagnosis of dementia. To finish off 2013, Esther Rantzen launched the new 24 hour dedicated helpline Silverline which offers friendship, information and support for older people. So what does all this tell us? Clearly the issues affecting older people, particularly dementia, are coming to the forefront. However Emma Hardwidge, director of RLE Law and member of Solicitors for the Elderly stated that ‘the stark reality is that a large proportion of us will be affected by dementia and other challenges as we get older. We are seeing an increasing number of older people or their families seeking advice and getting the right help is crucial. These issues are not limited to dementia with people wanting advice about wills, care home fees and abuse. The launch of Silverline highlights the importance of the right support and advice for older people. As such, RLE Law will be offering a free confidential legal helpline throughout March 2014 where older people and their families can receive advice on the issues affecting them’. www.seasidenews.co.uk

HEALTH & BEAUTY Could that hump on your back be killing you? Journal of the American Geriatrics Society - Volume 52 Issue 10 Page 1662, October 2004 Hyperkyphotic Posture Predicts Mortality in Older Community-Dwelling Men and Women: A Prospective Study Deborah M. Kado et al. Conclusion: Older men and women with hyperkyphotic posture have higher mortality rates. Further studies are now revealing how deadly forward head shift, thoracic kyphosis mentioned above (humpback), and the loss of the curve in the lower back are linked to disease of all kinds as well as early mortality (death). Science fact: Your nervous system controls every function (including healing) in your body, and it’s protected by the spine. Taking care of your spine just makes common sense. In the last ďŹ ve years research has

increased on how the position of your spine will determine organ health and longevity. Findings by highly-esteemed research hospitals like Cornell and Johns Hopkins (USA) now show the damaging effects of increase or loss of spinal curves. So what is the solution? can you get help? Yes - It can be reduced and in some cases corrected by visiting a spinal health expert! If you (or anyone you care about) is not maintaining their spine on a consistent basis from the physical and postural abuse your spine gets daily, ask yourself ‘are you ready to pay attention and act on what the science of today is telling you?’ Call Walker Spinal Health for your FREE posture evaluation today: 01656 789000 only 25 spots available. Meditation When looking to buy a new home its ‘Location, Location, Location’. When looking to practice meditation its ‘Generosity, Generosity, Generosity’. The component of generosity isn’t necessarily what you see, it is usually hidden, but manifests when the minds conditions are in unison. What are those conditions? A practitioner loses the sense of ‘I’. Instead of what is in it for me? They ask, how can this mind support wholesomeness? Trusting that the next action will be beneďŹ cial. Generosity isn’t in the material sense. With practice the practitioner cuts through old habits, unhelpful thinking, expectation and reward. What is left? The good heart. The good heart ourishes and when the opportunity arises generosity also transmits in all worldly relationships. Generosity can mean presence, listening, touch, patience, calm speech, clarity, wisdom. This is the overall aim of meditation. A wakeful,

clear, ethical, open heart. In all meditative traditions the work of generosity can be seen in its approach to relationship. The Bridgend Meditation Community offers its retreat days and programmes in the truest aspect of generosity. Here are some of its monthly activities. What is earthing? Earthing, also known as grounding, is based on research showing that having a connection to the earth’s electrical energy promotes physical well-being. This connection is made between the electrical frequencies of the human body and that of the earth, which can be achieved directly (e.g. barefoot in grass or on a

beach) or by proxy through grounding technology. Clinton Ober, a recognised pioneer in the concept of earthing, knew that the earth’s surface is made up of negatively charged ions, which contain extra electrons. These electrons have the ability to reduce positive charges, like those of free radicals. Free radicals circulate in our body looking

for electrons in order to be complete, and once they do, they are “neutralisedâ€? and no longer contribute to inammation in the body. Ober ďŹ nally received support in 2004, after many years of personal research, when the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine published one of his studies. The results showed that

“earthing during your sleep resynchronises cortisol secretion more in alignment with its natural, normal rhythm. Learn more at www. naturalnews.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke www.buysafer.ineways.eu

POEMS You May Not Realise What You Have Lost You may not realise what you have lost, Until you lose the ones you loved, Then it will be far too late, Because you cannot give kisses and hugs. In life we may have arguments, Which separate many families for years, But once you realise they’re no longer there, It may turn you into tears. It could only take a phone call, To say you love them still, And no matter what has been said, Love them, you always will. Make that needed contact, To help resolve all your faults, Because life goes on for everyone, And the end of life you cannot halt. David Boyce, Brackla

The Polluted Pathway A footpath I travel; At the dog and paper litter I marvel. Can’t they see the problems they make. Of ill health and rodents I do not fake. The footpath goes downhill. So too the standards of that hill. Many years ago such lack of standards would be unthinkable. Litter problems surmount and are unsinkable!! How to combat such pollution? What Oh! What is the solution? Bins, signs and fines have thought to be the answer. But still the litterers gather. Spreading their garbage on the way. Whilst taking their route this way. Maybe prison is the deterrent. To pollution making errant. Anita Griffiths, Pyle

Wales in Spring

Thank God For Carers

I live in a lovely place It is called as South Wales The valleys full of green mountains With rivers down through the vales

There’s no dust upon my furniture, nor stains my eyes can see For I’ve a lovely friend who comes, and busy as a bee.

The mountains are very steep With houses up on the hills Some of them have front gardens Full of plants and daffodils

She dusts and sweeps and polishes and all is sparkling bright My windows cleaned and I’ve no fear of letting in the light.

The Welsh are known for choirs Many times, they used to sing But there isn’t anything better now As the flowers blossom in the spring

I am so very thankful for, in all it’s done with love And her coming is a message from my Father up above.

In March the weather changes When the days start to become sunny You start to see newborn animals Like lambs and little bunnies

And we thank our God for those who preach or go to other lands But we’re so glad for those who care for others near at hand.

But due to all the high mountains And some of the wild terrains Wales has lots of bad weather Especially when it rains David Boyce, Brackla

Who bring us hugs and gladness and just show us of God’s care In helping us stay in our homes and know he’s with us there Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

I Will Never Learn

Heartache

He told me not to do it But did I listen – no! I rushed to make the booking And I couldn’t wait to go! He told me I’d be sorry Ha! Sour grapes I thought And tried on for the umpteenth time The special gear I’d bought When to air ambulance flew me home He sadly shook his head at me OK - He’s bloody right again I’ll never learn to ski! Chris Early, Cefn Cribwr

The one I love you took away. Not with the slightest care. For that cruel action you must pay. My heart is, beyond repair. Vengeance is all consuming. I need you to feel some pain. Bad times for you are looming. My loss won’t be your gain. You took my heart’s desire. But he was free to choose. He will not; escape my ire. Like you he’s doomed to lose. Both of you caused me such pain. With no thought, as for my fate! My soul is now a darkened stain. My heart now filled with hate. Bridie Banwell Broadlands, Bridgend

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT A film maker’s point of view On St David’s Day 1999 work started on the restoration of Sker House and for the rest of that year a firm that specialised in building conservation stripped the Elizabethan manor house of all its original lime plaster, removed large amounts of

rotten timber, took down unwanted walls, repaired the roof, put most of it back together again and generally made it safe. Being a local film maker, I got involved and was on site nearly every day, following the progress of the work. The first few weeks meant taking a lot of lighting equipment, too, hauling all the gear up and down ladders inside the darkened building in order to keep up with progress.

The builders were great to work with, always friendly and cooperative. Some were local men who knew the history of the building well, others came in each day from Hereford,

where the company was based. Financial difficulties unexpectedly halted the project, but when it got going again in 2003 I was able to complete the film – and include a scene at the end with the Maid of Sker! When it was finished, the film came out on DVD and is now also available as a download. For more information, go to www. downwoodfilms.com Anthony Hontoir

Hi there acoustic clubbers Following a fantastic night on 23rd January, where we saw singer songwriter Cal Newman and his gravelly voiced blues guitar, and Jelly Roll Jones, a Hokum/Skiffle band, complete with Lindy Hop Dancers in the audience from Pontardawe, we welcome Amy Wadge and Pete Riley on 20th March. Amy and Pete came together a little over three years ago, and are described as ‘irresistible,

riveting performers’ by Bob Harris from Radio 2. Check them out on their website at www.amywadge.com and have a listen. They will be supported by local singer songwriter Nick Ward. For more information please ring the Box Office on 01656 815995 or check our Facebook page. Look forward to seeing you there! Lin Williams

Art in focus This month I bring to your attention a masterpiece from one of our most enduring British landscape artists: John Constable. Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows, 1831 was one of Constable’s famous “six footers”: the large formats that Constable himself considered to be his most accomplished compositions, and one he reserved for only six paintings in his lifetime. He nicknamed this one, “the great Salisbury”, aware of the fact that he had produced a masterpiece. It is now on display until 5th September in gallery 3 and is definitely not one to be missed. Come and witness this viscous canvas where Constable’s inner feelings are on full show

Stag’s world of rock through the rich metaphor and symbolism within the painting. Created at a time when Constable had lost his love, Maria Bicknell and when religious turmoil engulfed him, Constable created a piece that was charged with emotional intensity. The staccato paintwork and the looseness of the brushstroke give the painting a wonderful expressionist feel: a modern precedent perhaps? Learn more about this work of art by attending one of the new exciting art tours: A Journey through Landscape. Free to the public and put on daily at 12.30pm. Josephine Lewington MA National Museum Cardiff

Pyle & Porthcawl Photographic Society In addition to excellent presentations, we also held our annual Club Competition Two, which is in two sections, Prints and Digital Images, with a trophy for each. Every member could enter up to two images each on any subject into either or both competitions. The winners were the photographers who attained the highest mark in each competition. Jan Cawley judged both competitions, and not only awarded the marks, but also provided a critique on each image. Prints Competition: First was Richard Craze with “Pelican Portrait”. Second was Geoff Baker with “Windblown”. Third was shared between “Fused” by Martyn Derbyshire, “Elephant Crossing” by Glyn Edmunds, “Stag’s Head” by Geoff Baker and “99-100 Ready or not I’m Coming” by Trevor Owen. Digital Image Competition: First was Geoff Baker with “Blue Tit”. Second was shared between Richard Craze with “River Sunset with Reeds” and Will Walker with “Beat the Wave”. Third was shared between Glyn Edmunds, Dave Jones, Malcolm Nugent, Denise Davies, Terry www.seasidenews.co.uk

As usual it’s been hectic! Former local policeman and drummer Dave Hewiett dropped off an old photo of his late 60s, early 70s, band “Haverson Apricot”. Three of its members, Dave and guitarists Greg Harris and Rob Ash, went on to form that great outfit “James Hogg”, and

released three singles, “Lovely Lady Rock”, “California Blues” and “Gotta Be A Winner”. The guys still play in different line-ups and I remember Rob Ash playing a brilliant acoustic session on my radio show.

I was also informed of the sad death of Pencoed’s Phil Davies, the fine bassist in 70s band “Quicksand”. Their classic album “Home Is Where I Belong” is one I treasure to this day! Rob at The Seahorse now has bands on a Saturday as well as Sunday night and a Tuesday jam, so give it a look. Watch out for Keith from “The Lounge Lizards” new band “Subdriver” – they could be hot! Sorry lads, I will make the Royal Oak jam in Kenfig Hill every Thursday once my visa is cleared! Plans are afoot for this year’s Newton Beer and Music Festival, and there’s also a big music charity bash planned for the Hi-Tide in May – will keep you informed. across Britain and 2014 is set to be even more successful.

The support we have received over the last year has been incredible and we can’t wait to see what this year brings. With sell outs at the Roadhouse Birmingham and sub 69 Reading already under our belt, bring on the next few months! After the success of last year’s shows in the Hi Tide, the Oasis Experience have decided to put another show into the calendar. They will be returning there on 29th March and will be bringing a brand new show with them. You can get tickets by calling 01656 782432.

Thursday 1st - Saturday 3rd May

“The Producers” by PAODS PAODS will be presenting the Mel Brooks’ musical ‘THE PRODUCERS’ at the Grand Pavilion from 7.30pm with a Sat matinee at 2.30pm and rehearsals are currently in full swing. This record-breaking show

which has won 12 Tony Awards concerns a down-on-his-luck producer and his accountant plotting a get-rich quick scheme. If they raise money to invest in a play that is a guaranteed flop, they will be raking in the money. The plan is flawless, at least they think so!!!!

The original show spawned a successful London

production which ran for over 2 years together with a film version. Join us for this fantastic musical which draws on the humour of many show-business in-jokes and characters with ridiculous accents. Ticket prices: Balcony £13.00 (Concessions £12.00) Stalls £11.00 (Concessions £10.00) Available from the PAODS ticket hotline: 01656 788148 or from the Pavilion Box Office: 01656 815995

Sun Style Tai Chi news

Surf report We’ve had more of the same so far throughout February although surfers around these coasts are surely the ones with least reason to complain! Successive record-breaking storms have meant some of the most incredible surfing conditions in memory. While occasional gaps in the howling winds have produced classic, clean conditions, a lot of the time the actual eye-of-storm scenarios themselves have also provided some great waves. Almost all the surfing has taken place east of the now world famous pier (which seems to have become Northern Europe’s answer to Niagara Falls with its hordes of photographers), and rare spots such as Newton have been turning on for days at a time. Coney and the Point have been breaking just about back-to-back for six weeks, while the driving south westerly drifts have also kept water temperatures unusually mild. The same winds have also led to some amusing, but potentially lethal clashes with other ‘water users’. Several local surfers have reported deliberate casting of weights by fishermen on the Eastern Prom - as in aiming for us while we’re in the water. Might be an idea for others experiencing this to start

reporting it when it happens? Surely surfers are worth more to the local economy, and in the event of a clash could kick up a better stink than these mysterious thugs (even if they gut their catches on the nearby pavement). Just a thought, councillors. While the surfers have been ripping throughout, this winter has been a great chance to appreciate some of the talented photographers who frequent our breaks. Experts from all over the land have been crawling over each other for a shot of storm waves or surfers, but it’s consistently been the local guys who’ve amazed and inspired us with the moments of stoke they’ve been able to capture with their lenses. Tony John, Craig Rees, Claire Beach, Richard Hyde and Jamie Strong all deserve a shout from SEASIDE NEWS. They have come up with images that will last years - even decades. Shows how times change that surfers can enjoy a session or a swell only to relive it through photos within days. Great times. But we are now looking forward to some glassier conditions... when these winds finally decide to take a break. See you in the water. By Tom Anderson

I brought the Style to Wales and have been training instructors to start their own clubs in the hope that there would be no resulting rivalry. The UK head of our Style has written the following message of support: “I am David Martin and I learned Sun Style Tai Chi with Sun Jian Yun, the late daughter of Sun Lutang, the famous Chinese Martial Arts

Master who created the Style. John Jones from Porthcawl, who I trained at my home in Leicester, has been my representative for spreading the Sun Style in Wales, and as such he hopes to form a friendly group of affiliated clubs”. John Jones Sun Style Tai Chi Association UK

Porthcawl Parkrun news Porthcawl Parkrun continues to go from strength to strength with over 5100 runs completed since its inaugural run on April 6th 2013. The free to enter event takes place every Saturday morning at 9am on the lower promenade. All you need to do is register at

To commemorate its first anniversary there is celebration planned after the run on Saturday 5th April and there will be a few themed runs to coincide with certain dates,

Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

January has again been a wet and windy month; however with the sportive fixture list starting in March all club rides were well attended. Julie Webster has made the big leap up to the large ride group and is showing how gutsy a rider she is and I have no doubt that she will achieve her challenging goals she as set herself. Another female rider who as taken the bad weather head on is Mary Wilson who is improving with every ride and is becoming a very strong rider. Martin Davies is showing the younger element of the club that age is no excuse by continually topping the club Strava page for most miles per week hitting the 150 mark regular and at 59 yrs of age is impressive I think you would agree. During the monthly meeting it

was agreed that the club will be running a training camp in Puerto Pollensa in March 2015. This would be for a week and take in some of the legendary routes including the Coll de Sóller and the Sa Calobra. Saturday rides start at 9am and Wednesday night at 7pm from the Tap in Pyle. All very welcome. Any questions please email me on nickemorgan@ hotmail.co.uk. Keep on tapping! Nicky Morgan
