LETTERS Eggs For Romania

5 Marathons In 5 Days

Dear Editor, For the children whose only home in Romania is an orphanage or an odd corner in the street, there’s never – or rarely – anything in the way of treats but, an organisation based in Cardiff called ‘Support for Romania’ takes out at Easter thousands of those small crème Cadbury’s Easter eggs to give away to the children there. Again this year, there’s been a collection of those eggs and, on Monday, 31st March, 3,847 were taken up to Cardiff from Porthcawl to join other collections of eggs from the surrounding areas. In Porthcawl, Gilgal Baptist Church was the collecting centre and we are most grateful not only to the friends and members of the church, but also to a magnificent effort by Porthcawl Comprehensive School, the Rainbow group in Trinity Church and also not forgetting the kind contribution by the Co-op shops in Porthcawl and Pyle and also Porthcawl Spar. Our grateful thanks to all involved. Graham Watkins, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, I have a little piece on our charity and my fundraising efforts that you may hopefully be able to squeeze in to next month’s issue. A new chapter in the fundraising challenges for the Chloe Bigmore Trust was fulfilled in March when I completed five marathons on five consecutive days bringing the 100 challenge total up to 64 with London now being 65. I am hoping to cram the others in this coming year up to April 2015 when it will also be a fitting way to also celebrate my 60th birthday. June is destined to be busy with a marathon dressed as Batman, the Mumbles Triathlon, section of the GB Relay 2014, a Guinness World Record attempt to run around the UK, Trail Marathon Wales and the Zip Wire in Snowdonia all to be completed within a 10 day window. The charity has to date now raised over £67,000 and has recently helped Tyˆ-Hafan children’s hospice with financing an outside play area. In July this year I will also be competing in Ironman UK which this year falls on what would have been Chloe’s 21st birthday. To donate/sponsor please follow link from website www. chloebigmore.co.uk Paul Bigmore, Bridgend

Heronsbridge Wins Horticultural Award

Support For Porthcawl Stroke Club Dear Editor, Once again we ask for your support for the Porthcawl Stroke Club. The photo is of Mr David Anderson left and on the right is Porthcawl Stroke Club Secretary Mr Ray Cross. On 26th March, David Anderson a local Porthcawl man shared an insight to a wonderful holiday he and his wife went to in Bavaria, Germany the Romantische Strasse. He brought along slides of various places, in which they had visited and it was breathtaking to say the least. He went on to tell us about a pilgrimage oval rococo Church of Wies situated in the Weilheim Schongau district, Bavaria, Germany designed in the late 1740s by Dominikus Zimmermann. He showed us Middle Ages walled towns and charming villages, wonderful medieval architecture, high gabled houses and cobbled streets. I think it was in Rothenburg that some houses were given to tenants at very low cost and are still there to help the not so well off today. Remembering the magnificent Rothenburg palace with an elephant on the wall, chandeliers to die for, the beautiful, peaceful Church in Wieskirche and the breathtaking countryside, it was a joy to see. Thank you for sharing this with us all. It certainly gave us a boost. Barbara Matthews, Porthcawl Stroke Club

LETTERS The Spirit Of The Rest Lives On

Porthcawl Super Silt To Be Sold To Public

Dear Editor, Six months have passed since The Rest doors closed, for many of the dedicated staff this has been a difficult time having to come to terms with losing this amazing place. So many questions never answered so many more to ask. The Board of Trustees have still to declare the final finances; they were obliged to give any monies in excess to charity. But who is there to ask they all seem to have run aground? Surly the people of Porthcawl have a right to know, having lost one of our most historical buildings. However, there is good news! Some of our wonderful staff have decided to keep the memory and ethos of The Rest alive. Known as the Rest Nightingales we provide a service to help people stay independent in their own homes. We help all ages, from those recuperating following an illness or injury to those who need a helping hand with housework etc. For carers who need a need a “little me time”, safe in the knowledge their loved one is in safe hands. Dignity and respect are our key words and with no tell tale uniforms we hope to become just a helping friend. For details of all our many services please contact: Linda Wade on 01656 711966 or Helen Sinclair 07817 203969

Porthcawl Shout Forum opened their latest initiative to help clean up Porthcawl on Tuesday 1st April 2014 with a new enterprise called Seaside Super Silt which dramatically enriches all garden soils and produces exceptional plant growth for both vegetables and flowers. The silt excavated by contractors in May 2013 to lower the harbour floor was dumped at the top end of Salt Lake car park for temporary storage and now it’s a great embarrassment to the town trying to regenerate itself and residents and businesses are desperate to see it gone. However analytical tests by Cornelly Oceanographic institute have shown the fertile mixture of decomposed seaweed, fish deposits and undisturbed bacterial is an amazing soil improver, the rich silt loam producing exceptional plant growth. In tests by the Royal Porthcawl Allotment Society have grown tomatoes as large as melons and arm length runner bean. The older people’s community forum plan to have members Bag and Barrow the Super Silt and sell it to visitors on the prom. A Shout spokesperson said “exercise is good for older people so once we have cleaned up this lot we may keep going and dig out our long promised swimming pool” Local AM and First Minister Carwyn Jones was invited to fill the first barrow and said he was “pleased with yet another Porthcawl Forum Initiative to improve the town”. Gary Victor, Porthcawl Shout Forum

SCHOOLS Brynteg School Round-up On 4th March Year 11 students, Lloyd Francis, Beth Granville and Tom Rowlands took part in the Welsh ďŹ nal of the ESU public speaking competition at Cardiff Bay. They did not win but spoke very eloquently. Then on 7th March Year 12 students Connor Lomax, Rebekah Lee and Thomas Prosser represented Bridgend in the South Wales ďŹ nal of the Rotary Club’s Youth Speaks Competition at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff. They performed well but lost out against very tough opposition. The Welsh ďŹ nal of the National Consumer Quiz took place on 25th March at the Millennium Stadium. The Brynteg team of Year 12 students, Callum GrifďŹ ths, Alex Fox, Harry Davies and Tom McArdle performed brilliantly. After a tough competition our team ďŹ nished close runners-up to St Albans, Torfaen. Both teams will now compete in the UK ďŹ nal in July. On 27th March, Year 13 students Lewis Brace, Michael Williams, Ryan Trigg, Isabelle Abou-Chakra, Matthew Greenman and Morgan Freeman represented the school at the Welsh heat of the of the BASE competition run by the Chartered Accountants in England and Wales [ICAEW] at Cardiff University. Brynteg’s winning team were excellent and will now represent Wales in the national ďŹ nal in Birmingham in July.

Owain Evans and Callum Mills of Year 10 represented Brynteg’s Eco Committee at the Launch of the ďŹ rst senior eco committee event run by Keep Wales Tidy hosted at Ty Hywel, Cardiff Bay. The students met with pupils from other schools to discuss their thoughts and views with government representatives who will ensure that the student voice is reected in future decisions and actions. Three pupils from Brynteg School performed in the Porthcawl Rock Club 3rd Anniversary Gig in the Y Centre, Porthcawl on Saturday 29th March. Jonathan Evans, Rhys Evans and Laura Harding performed in the gig which featured rock bands that performed various rock, metal and pop numbers from the 1960s to the present. The school rugby teams have also shone. After a gruelling two day knock out competition the Year 8 boys were crowned National Urdd 7s Champions at Coleg Sir Gar, Llanelli. Daniel O’Sullivan was named as Player of the Tournament. On Saturday 5th April the Year 9 rugby team played against Cowbridge School in the ďŹ nal of the Welsh Cup held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. After a hard fought match the team were runners-up. Well done everyone.

We recently undertook the ‘Geirio Gwych’ and ‘Big Writing’ literacy initiatives which are proving to be very successful. Not only do the children thoroughly enjoy the work, particularly the ‘Big Write’ event in which once a week they spend up to an hour composing various genres in a calm atmosphere of subdued lighting and classical music, we’re also beginning to see a real impact on the standard of Welsh and English writing. As a Welsh medium primary, we are keen competitors in the Urdd eisteddfodau each year. Established in 1922 the Urdd is a movement which gives children various opportunities to socialise through the medium of Welsh. The eisteddfod is the largest event in the Urdd’s calendar with this year’s national event being held in Bala during Whitsun. We are very proud of all of the children who competed in the eisteddfod at school, county and district levels. All the best to the following who will now represent us at the national: Cerdd Dant Solo - Carwyn Keirl; Solo Recitation – Martha Herbert; Harp Solo – Martha MacMillan; 2D Artwork – Osian GrifďŹ th; 3D Group project - Tara Coombes, Kate Goff, Angharad Jones, Lleucu Jones, Martha MacMillan and Georgia Murray and Grace Richards-Hier; Computer graphics – Lacey Jones. Former St Clare’s and Archbishop McGrath pupil Stephan Ulberini has been offered a place to study for his MA in Opera Performance at the world famous Royal Academy of Music. The 21-year-old tenor from Porthcawl is currently completing his training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and will continue his studies at The Royal Academy of Music in September, following in the footsteps of stars such as Katherine Jenkins, Elton John and Annie Lennox. SCHOOLS Music Success At Nottage Primary Recently, Isaak Cronje from Year 6 competed in the Roger Chilcott Music in the Community competition playing his clarinet. The competition is open to children from Bridgend and Port Talbot areas. The final was held on Friday 21st March at St. Catharine’s church in Baglan. He was the youngest competitor and we are very proud that he won first prize. Sports Relief I am so proud of the efforts of all our pupils and staff in raising funds for Sport Relief on 21st March. Pupils completed the Sport Relief mile and our staff took part in a triathlon with a difference! It was a really fun day and a victory for #teamnottage with an amazing £3748.90 raised. Thanks to Mr Arbery for his great organisation and thanks to pupils and parents for amazing sponsorship and contributions. Jazz fun for Year 6 Nottage Primary School were lucky to host a jazz workshop for all the cluster school Year 6 pupils as part of the Porthcawl Jazz Festival. It was a great event led by Digby Fairweather the noted jazz musician. Thanks to the committee of the Porthcawl Jazz Festival for organising the event once again for us. Cynffig Comprehensive news At Cynffig, we are celebrating our Investors in Families award, which recognises all the ‘over-and-above’ efforts we make to connect with our community, and to build strong, supportive relationships with the parents of our pupils. We believe passionately that attendance is central to achievement. Our Learning House, our Family Engagement Officer and our superb pastoral team work alongside all our teaching and nonteaching staff to ensure that every pupil has every opportunity to be in school, learning, progressing and achieving. The award epitomises the ethos of a school which puts pupils at the heart of everything we do. Over Easter, for example, staff were in school in their own time, unpaid, supporting pupils’ revision and securing the best possible outcomes for them this summer. In ‘normal’ school weeks, they are here before 7am and long after 3.10am with pupils, guiding, training, coaching and nurturing success. We wish our KS3 pupils the very best with their reading and numeracy tests, KS4 all the success they deserve in their GCSE and BTEC qualifications, and our A-level pupils the grades which will be the ticket to the next stage of their adventure in education. Good luck to you all! Hannah Castle, Head Teacher

West Park Eco Day Fun! A wonderful day! We were delighted to see all the children dressed in green ready to get digging and planting to produce “West Park in Bloom” in preparation for our platinum flag application! All the children have had the opportunity to plant, sow, dig and design and have put their own little eco stamp around the school! The results should be amazing and we hope to enjoy watching our fantastic outdoor environment burst into colour during the summer term. Reception watched an excerpt from Dr Seuss The Lorax and learned how we all need to care to help preserve the environment and look after our trees! Foundation Phase pupils created number and alphabet pebbles to use in their Secret Garden. Year 6 shared a book called Just a Dream and have each been given a tree cutting from our woodland to plant at home. They have preserved a piece of West Park to nurture at home as they themselves grow. They also handcrafted beautiful recycled egg cups and jewellery from waste paper. Very innovative. Thank you to everybody who donated compost, seeds, pots and planters and a special mention to Mr Frank Fulgoni, Mr Robert Owen and Mr Pete Ryell for their kindness. Sam Bennet, Senior Administrative Officer

Archbishop McGrath news Many thanks to staff and students who participated in the 2014 Sport Relief event. Over £2,200 was raised through a sponsored fun run and a staff versus students penalty shoot-out. Also congratulations once again to the musicians and choristers of the school; an excellent Easter concert was enjoyed by all. Parents of students in Years 10-13, please take note of the various revision programmes as the examinations approach, particularly those over the Easter and May half-term holidays. Reminders will be sent each day via the school’s texting service. Our prayers and best wishes are with all our students taking examinations this year. In the summer term, we look forward to welcoming Lord Terry Burns, Chairman of Santander plc, Channel 4 TV and the Royal Academy of Music, as part of our programme of inspirational speakers to motivate our students. With all good wishes to readers of Seaside News. Rev Dr Philip Manghan Pennaeth

Brynteg Trips On the 19th March, Year 10 took part in the annual Bridgend 1419 Learning Pathways Careers Convention at Pencoed College. This event provides learners with various experiences to help develop their confidence and aspirations. The students made contact with local businesses and international companies who promoted the importance of skills and qualifications for their future careers, especially in difficult economic times. On the same day Brynteg sixth form and Year 11 students attended Science in Health Live 2014. The students participated in practical activities and demonstrations. Interactive presentations facilitated by professors and PhD students at Cardiff University provided students with information on the range of medical and health science courses available, hopefully inspiring the future scientists and health care practitioners. On 27th March, Dr.Jones accompanied Year 12 pupils to the National Particle Physics Masterclass at Swansea University. There they experienced lectures on topics such as the large Hadron Collider and the quest for antihydrogen. In addition pupils worked in teams to analyse real-world data from the Collider at CERN near Geneva in Switzerland and one of the Brynteg groups was the first to correctly identify the signature of the elusive Higgs Boson, discovered last year at CERN. Porthcawl Comprehensive School was delighted to host a talk from a member of the House of Lords on Friday 4th April to encourage students to engage more with the political and parliamentary process. Lord Touhig met with Sixth Form students for an hour to talk about the work and role of the House of Lords. This was followed by a question and answer session on various aspects of the parliamentary process and life at Westminster generally. Miss Crook, Head of Sixth Form at Porthcawl Comprehensive School said, “This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to interact with someone who knows the parliamentary system inside out, as it can sometimes seem so far removed from their daily lives. After the session, Lord Touhig remarked upon how engaging he had found our students, and that he had thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Porthcawl.” The visit was arranged through the Lord Speaker’s ‘Peers in Schools’ programme, which has been running since 2007 and has so far involved around 50,000 young people. This continuing outreach programme sends members of the House of Lords into schools and colleges across the country to give talks in support of the citizenship curriculum. Spring term At Stagecoach

We have been busy raising money and getting fit in the process! Our Super Hero Dress-Up Day raised £180.80 for Sustrans and a magnificent £1013.63 for Sport Relief. A massive thank you to everyone who sponsored us to walk a mile, it was wonderful to see children supporting and encouraging each other, though I think some staff needed help too! Our rugby team, however, needed no help in winning the Richard Pow Memorial Cup. This annual game against Tynyrheol Primary, attended by Richard’s parents, was an enjoyable yet poignant remembrance of a past pupil. But it has not all been sport, we celebrated Fairtrade Day with activities focused on the country of Ecuador and junior children were in good voice at the Cymanfa Ganu in Porthcawl. Achieving our Investors in Families Re-Accreditation Award has been especially rewarding. We are so grateful for all the support that parents and families give to the school to benefit children’s learning and we look forward to continuing this partnership. As we prepare for the Easter holiday, our bonnets are trimmed and eggs decorated all ready for the parade, while our special assembly will again tell us the Easter story to conclude an enjoyable spring term. Sue Jones

The end of the spring term at Stagecoach Theatre Arts was a tremendous success as all students performed to great acclaim. Over the course of four days, seven performances took place at Maesteg Town Hall, with an astonishing 310 children involved. Principal Helene Reynolds said “We are so very proud of all the children for their wonderful work this term, which culminated in memorable performances of the musical ‘Shakespeare Rocks’ by our ‘Main School’ students, and ‘Disney Magic’ from our younger ‘Early Stages’ children.” Alongside the performances, 165 of the children chose to take group musical theatre ‘Performance Arts Awards’, and examiners attended the shows to assess and award this well recognised qualification. The Stagecoach summer term is just starting, with exciting work planned for the weekly classes, along with LAMDA exams and performances at St David’s Hall, Wales Millennium Centre and the Sherman Theatre. For information, or to enrol for the summer term call Helene or Rob on 01446 772727 or visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/ bridgend

News from St John’s Porthcawl Pupils were thrilled when Ospreys players, Matthew Dwyer and Ashley Beck, recently visited St John’s. Dwyer who plays hooker and Beck who plays centre gave up their free time and joined a training session with the Under 16s. Sport has a major role to play at St John’s and pupils of all ages have opportunities to participate in a wide variety of sports. Two budding scientists, Megan Greenwood (Year 9) and Bethan Williams (Year 8) were invited to spend a day at Swansea University where they met Professor Hillary Lappin-Scott, Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of Life Sciences. The girls enjoyed seeing the Bio Chemistry and Medical Research labs before having a campus tour. This was a wonderful experience and the girls were fortunate to be offered opportunities for future work experience. Twenty-five St John’s pupils flew to Berlin recently on a History/ German trip. Visits included the Holocaust Memorial, the Berlin Wall Memorial and the German Parliament Building, the Reichstag. Thanks to Mrs Hannaby and other staff for making the trip such an enjoyable and memorable educational experience. The award involved collecting evidence to prove that the school promotes a family friendly ethos, as well as showing how this partnership can be built upon over the next three years. The school is proud of its collective commitment to work with all families. This commitment ensures that everyone engages in a positive way with all families at the school. Eco Elly visits St. Clare’s Pupils in the Prep School at St. Clare’s had a special treat last month when they were visited in assembly by Bridgend County’s ‘Eco Elly’ the elephant, who came to teach us all about recycling and how we can make a difference to the environment. At St. Clare’s School we have our own Prep School Eco Club who meet regularly to investigate new ways to help our local environment. We were very proud when our Dining Hall was recently awarded

5 stars in a food standards inspection by the environmental health board. As well as this, our Catering Manager, Debbie, won the title of “Manager of the Year” at a nationwide Thomas Franks awards ceremony. We would all like to thank Debbie and her team for keeping us well fed with healthy lunches every day. For many of our Senior School students, May marks the culmination of many months of hard work as they prepare to sit external exams. We would like to wish all of our students the very best of luck, and remind them that these final weeks of preparation are the most important. Our April Open Day was a big success, with many new faces coming along for a tour of our beautiful grounds. If you missed it, but would still like to come and see our school, please contact Admissions on (01656) 789966 to book a private tour at a time that suits you. Cashless Canteen System

We have had our busiest and most exciting month yet at Porthcawl Primary! Firstly we have been working hard on the SMILE project in conjunction with Bridgend College and the IRBA (International Bee Research Association). The aim of the project this year is to promote the bumble bee. Our school has been a hive of activity with our pupils writing and recording an original song as well as designing badges. On top of that we have also written, ďŹ lmed and edited a three minute ďŹ lm all about bees. Both the song and ďŹ lm are amazing and all the pupils involved should feel very proud. Also our Eco committee attended the launch of ‘The Keepers Trail’ at Bryngarw Park. They were the ďŹ rst ever people to try out the trail and they planted two cherry trees to mark the event. Finally we would like to congratulate our Formula 1 team, the Porthcawl Piranhas. After months of hard work producing our car and portfolio they attended the South Wales ďŹ nals at the Celtic Manor. It was an action packed day in which they had to make presentations to engineers as well as race the car down the track. Well done to the team who did an excellent job! Andrew Wood, Head Teacher

With the opening of the brand new marina last month and the forthcoming Senior Open Championship golf tournament at Royal Porthcawl, 2014 is shaping up to be a great year for Porthcawl. And signiďŹ cant developments are taking place at the area’s school canteens too! Porthcawl and West Park primaries are part of a group of schools in the county borough that have recently introduced the new ‘cashless canteens’ system. As part of the system, parents can avoid that last-minute Monday morning scramble for the correct change by conveniently paying for their children’s lunches online, either day-by-day or weeks in advance. When pupils reach the till at lunchtime, a member of catering staff inputs details of what food they’ve selected into the system, which provides useful information about what youngsters are eating at school. The system then debits their pre-paid online accounts. Balanced, nutritious school meals give children the energy they need to make the most of their time at school. Hopefully this convenient new system will result in more pupils eating school meals. If your child’s school is offering the online payments, you can pay for their meals by visiting the ‘Pay it’ section of the council’s website at www.bridgend.gov.uk.

NEWS OfďŹ cial Opening Of Porthcawl Marina

Bridgend OfďŹ cially Suicide Safer

The sun shone and the yachts looked grand as we assembled for the opening of Porthcawl’s new ÂŁ3.2 million marina. This investment has more than doubled the number of berths, installed a lock system and built a new footbridge will help boost tourism and beneďŹ t Porthcawl for decades to come. It is also an investment that wouldn’t have been possible without the European Union. The EU is rarely out of the news these days, we spend much of our time hearing about the negatives and the costs that have been argued come from the complicated and multi-faceted relationship with have with the Union. It is easy to forget this is a two-way relationship and that there are at least as many (some might argue many more) beneďŹ ts that come from Wales’ membership of the European Union. Porthcawl’s new marina is part of a wider scheme being funded by the EU Regional Development Fund and the Welsh Government to develop Porthcawl and the Swansea Bay into a recognised Watersports Centre of Excellence. It’s also not unique, the Welsh valleys for example receive some of the highest level of regional funding across the European Union. This is partnership working at its very best.

Thanks to ďŹ ve year funding received from the BIG lottery, the Siaradwn Ni - Lets Talk programme co-ordinated by Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO) and Neath Port Talbot Council for Voluntary Service, has left a legacy of 1,666 life guards in the communities for Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot county boroughs. The Siaradwn Ni - Lets Talk programme which ended in March, has been responsible for co-ordinating the delivery of a range of activities to challenge stigma associated with mental health, the promotion of positive emotional health and resilience as well as supporting those who have been affected by suicide or have suicidal behaviours. Thanks to training provided (to anyone within the community or even professionals working with vulnerable communities), 1,666 people are now better able to ďŹ rstly recognise potential signs of suicidal behaviours, connect with an individual and ultimately take a person at risk to a safer place for now. The two day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training helps you to help others. If you would like to become a life guard or would like to ďŹ nd out more information please visit www. bavo.org.uk/training or call BAVO, T: 01656 810400. Free child safe wristbands Local Police Community Support OfďŹ cer Carl Wesgate of the Porthcawl Neighbourhood Policing Team is helping to keep children safe by launching wristbands to hand out to young visitors to the Porthcawl area throughout the Easter and summer school holidays. Familiar to anyone who has been to a musical festival or outdoor event, the wristbands are bright yellow featuring the South Wales Police and Porthcawl Town Council logos. Each band is bilingual, contains the text ‘If I am lost please call‌Os ydw i ar goll, fďŹ oniwch‌’ and leaves a space to write a contact name and number, or any other relevant information to be written and immediately accessed in the event of a child becoming lost or separated from a group. The child safe wristbands are available to collect from places in Porthcawl that display the ‘safety wristbands available here’ poster. This includes the police station, Porthcawl Town Council, lifeguard stations, the reception area at Trecco Bay, the Hi-Tide restaurant, Mackworth Road and at Scoops ice-cream parlour at Coney Beach. “My thanks go to local printer Les Tallon who was so impressed with the idea he stretched our funds to make an additional 3,000 wristbands from 5,000 to 8,000, and to Porthcawl Town Council that made this initiative possible with a donation of ÂŁ500, which was enough to produce the child safe wristbands, potentially helping to keep 8,000 children safe.â€? A Budget For All At the last election the Liberal Democrats’ top priority was to give low and middle earners a ÂŁ700 tax cut. And we’ve delivered. From this April, for the ďŹ rst time ever, nobody will pay income tax on the ďŹ rst ÂŁ10,000 they earn. In Bridgend that means that 5,350 earners will no longer pay income tax at all, whilst 49,300 will have ÂŁ700 more to spend each year than they did in 2010. Income tax isn’t the only way the Liberal Democrats are helping cut living costs. We want to do everything we can do help reduce the cost of childcare for parents. From next year, working parents will be able to get 20p from the government for every 80p they spend on childcare. This will help 3,880 families in Bridgend and around 83,600 million families across Wales. These changes have been possible because the Liberal Democrats put aside any narrow party interest back in 2010 to form a stable coalition government. We know that there is a lot more to do but by producing a long term economic plan, the Liberal Democrats have been able to deliver tax cuts which are building a stronger economy and a fairer society. NEWS Cold Calling Control Zone For Porthcawl

Porthcawl Marina

I was delighted to see the introduction of a new cold calling control zone in Porthcawl recently. Currently covering Anglesey Way, Sandpiper Road and West Park Drive, the zone has been set up by Bridgend County Borough Council, South Wales Police and Nottage and Rest Bay PACT in partnership with local residents. It gives householders an opportunity to make it clear that unwanted callers are not welcome and is intended to help protect them from high-pressure sales techniques, doorstep crime, rogue traders, distraction burglaries and more. It’s not illegal to cold call at a property, of course, but repeat callers or people who refuse to leave when asked to do so may be committing an offence. The zone is intended to give residents and vulnerable members of the community greater conďŹ dence in their ability to say ‘no’ to cold callers and to report problems to the proper authorities. Signage is in place advising people that they are within a cold calling control zone and information packs have been delivered to local homes which contain window stickers to reinforce the message. The scheme will be reviewed after six months and I hope that residents will show this worthwhile initiative their full support.

Last month saw the ofďŹ cial opening of the all-new Porthcawl Marina, which is already proving to be a popular attraction for visitors. The harbour has always been an important focal point in the town’s history and culture, and the multi-million pound upgrade will ensure that it can continue to fulďŹ l this role in its new incarnation as Porthcawl Marina. As part of the marina’s transformation, a new harbour gate has been installed with a pedestrian footbridge, there is a permanent basin of water, an extension to the eastern breakwater and pontoon moorings for a mix of up to 70 leisure, commercial and visiting craft. All of the berths have been allocated and I’m told that we had calls from boat owners wishing to book moorings almost a year in advance of forthcoming events such as the Senior Open golf tournament, the Splash-Up and this year’s Elvis Festival. The new marina forms an important part of our ongoing regeneration plans for the town, and we’ll be seeking to further enhance its facilities as we continue to regenerate the waterfront area so that Porthcawl can develop and ourish as a seaside resort ďŹ t for the 21st century.

FEATURES Greats Of Welsh Rugby

Through Christian Eyes

#3 By 1977, when he was a British Lion, Graham Price had already established himself as an outstanding prop. His speed in the loose, his dependable hands and his forceful peel at the tail of the line-out were all useful assets. Furthermore, despite being wasp-waisted, he was a fearsome scrummager who gave no quarter. Graham Price scored a try on his debut in Paris running eighty yards in the closing moments of the game, an outstanding achievement for a wing, let alone a prop. That try announced to the rugby world that they were witnessing someone special. #4 Standing an imposing six foot three inches tall and carrying sixteen stones with ease, ‘R.H.’ Rhys Williams played in ten consecutive Tests for the British Lions from 1955 – 59 and represented Wales on over twenty occasions with distinction. Outstanding in the line-outs and mauls he won a stream of ball against the New Zealanders in 1959 and they had no hesitation in stating that he was ‘the greatest lock they had ever seen’, an endorsement of the highest order. Graham Price and Rhys Williams, numbers three and four in the Greatest Welsh XV. Mansel Jones, Author of Blind Justice http://jonesthebook.com

Hi folks, this month I want to write about Jesus being a friend. The Cambridge dictionary defines friendship as a person who you know well and who you like a lot, but who is usually not a member of your family. I suppose it’s not a bad definition – but what about how a true friend is always there for you, through thick and thin – someone who will never leave you. That is what Jesus is like when we seek His friendship. He has been so good to me. When I was in a very dark place Jesus brought me through. He has been so faithful, helping in every situation in life – giving hope, strength, peace, comfort and assurance. I want to tell you that Jesus is absolutely real (it is no myth) and His heart is for you if you open your heart to Him and seek His friendship. Here’s what it says in Hebrews 13 v 5 (AV) – He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!] Neil Harvey

Bird Watch: Greenfinch Whilst the predominant colour of the Greenfinch is green, look closely and you’ll see the male has bright yellow streaks on the wings and tail. The female is a dull green-brown. The strong beak is perfectly suited to the adults’ diet of seeds, although chicks are also fed regurgitated insects. Greenfinches are susceptible to the parasitic disease Trichomonosis. Between 2005 and 2006 some areas witnessed a 20% decline of the breeding population. Affected birds appear lethargic, fluffed up and sometimes drool at the mouth (though these are also general signs of ill-health). You can help to reduce the risk of disease transmission by keeping feeders and water dishes clean. I began the Garden BirdWatch survey in 2004 and regularly had 40 or more individuals in my garden; in 2013 I only ever recorded one or two. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. FEATURES St Theodore’s Gets Messy

Y Cefn Gwyrdd

St Theodore’s Church in Kenfig Hill has recently started Messy Church. What is Messy Church? Messy Church is a way of bringing church to families. It involves fun through games and crafts and is based on creativity, hospitality and celebration. Activities are for families to enjoy together. The first Messy Church was held on Sunday 23rd March when our theme was Mothers & Others, where activities included making a card for Mothering Sunday, icing and decorating biscuits, secret messages and muffs to keep coffee mugs warm. Sunday 13th April saw our second meeting with the theme New Life, a celebration of Easter where we painted and decorated hard boiled eggs, made an Easter card and made a group picture about Easter. We finish each meeting by sitting down together for a meal. There is no set cost, but a voluntary donation towards the cost of food. The meetings will be held once a month on a Sunday between 3pm and 5pm. Our next Messy Church is on Sunday 18th May. All are welcome to attend. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For further information, or contact details available http://www. messychurch.org.uk Grace Wylde

Following early spring work sessions at the corner of Bedford Close and Bedford Road which involved coppicing trees and clearing brambles from the bank, the corner seat has now been reinstated and the area planted with annual geraniums and daffodils. However nothing can compare with the beauty of the primroses which have flourished on this corner since being planted over thirty years ago! Y Cefn Gwyrdd, Cefn Community Council and Groundwork have worked closely for a year on a scheme to build an ‘history wall’ around the car park and repair bus shelters and install history panels. Hopefully work will start soon! The Gwyrdd’s summer programme starts with a poetry walk on Tuesday 20th May. A country walk where you can bring your favourite poems. On 25th June as part of the Love to Walk festival we will be leading a Bedford’s Realm Walk around the ironworks whilst the second week of July sees our annual village BBQ at Cefn Junction. ‘Square Mile Artists’ which celebrate talents of Cefn and the surrounding district are at the Box gallery in August and Silures Art returns for the third year a week later. Tools For Africa This month we have sent two Mechanical Engineering kits to two small workshops in Manyoni District Tanzania. Electricity is available so we included a requested pillar drill as well as the usual spanners, wrenches, hammers and hack-saws etc. They also requested micrometers, vernier scales and taps and dies which is indicative of the training they have now received and the technical nature of the work there is to do (Over sixty tools sent in each crate). We wish them well. Currently our workshop is cleaning the sculpture, which is located at the Trinity Church, Porthcawl. It has been there nearly thirty years and shortly after the URC and Methodist Churches joined together to form Trinity. The sculpture represents the rock on which the church is built, the three crosses, the Trinity and maritime activity and the stainless steel circle of people joined hands represent the human race living in harmony. The sculpture was designed by Susan Evans in partnerships with Cam Engineering, Chamber of Trade, Bridgend Builders and St.Athan Workshops. (Thanks to Rev Colin Richards for the information). Trinity Church and other local organisations are very supportive in our work in helping the developing world lift many out of poverty. Workshops are on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, volunteers are always welcome. For information contact John at 786367 or please view the charity website www.tfsr.org. Friends Of Morfa Reclaim Morfa Beach! The Friends of Morfa are organising a series of events to make sure as many people as possible get to use the footpath that was saved from closure late last year. Tata Steel and Neath Port Talbot Council were proposing to close footpath 92 (Longlands Lane, Margam) that leads on to the

beach. But, united with other many objectors, we fought back, culminating at a successful public inquiry in December. The events , coordinated by group secretary Beverley Carver, include quiz nights, the next one being a quiz against the Friends of Margam Park at the Twelve Knights Hotel, Margam on Monday 5th May from 7:30pm. All welcome. The next group meeting will take place during May, at the Twelve Knights. Find us on Facebook to confirm date and time. Have you been down to Morfa since ‘people power’ saved it for future generations? You can also investigate the local stretch of the Wales Coastal Path, which leads eastwards to Kenfig and westwards towards Gower. The Save Morfa Beach campaign prevented this excellent facility ironically leading visitors away from the coast! Come down and reclaim Morfa Beach! ‘Planet X’ Does Not Exist A survey made by the WISE satellite has turned up no evidence of the existence of a Solar System body dubbed ‘Planet X’. Pundits had theorised about the existence of such a large but unseen celestial body somewhere beyond the orbit of Pluto. In addition to ‘Planet X’, the body had garnered other nicknames, including ‘Nemesis’ and ‘Tyche’. Speculation about the body has come in part from geological studies that suggested a regular timing associated with mass extinctions of life on Earth. The idea was that a large planet or small star hidden in the farthest reaches of the Solar System might periodically sweep through bands of outer comets, sending some of them towards us. The Planet-X-based massextinction theories were largely ruled out even before the new WISE study. Other theories based on irregular comet orbits had also postulated a Planet-X-type body. The new WISE study now argues against those theories as well. But searches of the WISE catalogue have not all been negative. Discoveries include a star about 20 light-years away and a pair of brown dwarfs only 6.5 light-years away - the closest star system to be discovered for nearly a century. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Phil Powell feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Porthcawl, Bridgend & the surrounding area and 3KLO LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor

in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

WI & GUILD Porthcawl WI News

Bridgend Retired Teachers’ Association

At our last meeting we had a very interesting talk by Pamela Robson on the life of Mrs Beeton and how her cookbook first materialised, this was enjoyed by all members present. We are now looking forward to our Easter bonnet competition, and also a lady from Just Chocolates Aloud who will be giving us a talk and demonstration on the same day. Besides this we have a visit to a candle factory down in West Wales in May. This trip is being organised by one of our members Tina Richards, and should be a lovely day out. As well as this we are hoping that as many members as possible will attend our second meetings in the month. Maybe to share their interests in craft or also for those who have other interests as well. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 2pm at All Saints Church Hall, Porthcawl. If you are interested in joining our WI, please ring Gwen on the number below. You will be assured of a warm welcome. All enquiries ring Gwen Stapleton on 01656 783238. Gwen Stapleton

Bridgend R.T.A. enjoys a wide variety of activities which includes theatre visits, short break holidays, lunches, speakers, as well as day trips to all sorts of places of interest. The April meeting was addressed by Peter Davies speaking on Drovers: from Wales to London. This was a very interesting talk, much enjoyed by all. After this, final arrangements were made for the ‘Grand Day Out’ on 30th April. This trip involves coffee at the Celtic Manor, lunch in Abergavenny and finally, afternoon tea at Newbridge on Usk. Our future trips include a mystery trip in May, a visit to Stourhead in June, ‘War Horse’ at the Millennium Centre in July and a short break holiday in Alvaston Hall, Cheshire, September, with day visits to Liverpool, Chester and Port Sunlight. Each month we have a meeting with a speaker (1st Wednesday of each month), lunch at the Caeffatri (3rd Wednesday of each month) plus something a bit special, whether it be a day trip, a theatre visit or a short break holiday. We are always ready to welcome new members, retired from the teaching profession. The only thing we do not discuss at meetings is teaching! Sker WI News The April meeting of Sker WI was held recently at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage. The president Nora Williams welcomed the 49 members present. Seven members attended the Federation of Wales Conference in Wrexham and also spent a day in Liverpool which was enjoyed by all. Jackie Rees from the St John’s Ambulance gave a talk on the history of the organisation which originally started in Jerusalem in 1080 and has been in the UK for 900 years. People can join at a young age and learn about First Aid. In the last year they have attended 10,000 events in Wales only including the Pantomime in Porthcawl. They also go to a large variety of different events like the London Marathon. Jackie also gave advise on certain everyday accidents that could happen. The next meeting is on Thursday 8th May at 7pm when it will be the Annual General Meeting and the Resolutions will be discussed. Ann Vipond

Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild News A busy month as usual with our regular activities being well attended especially the luncheon club - any excuse for a meal out! But the craft group, the cinema club and the literary group all have their devotees. The literary group not as high brow as it perhaps sounds - we enjoy discussing and reading favourite poems. Last month it was the First World War poets, with a cup of tea to finish. sixteen members went to the Federation AGM in Cardiff followed by a tea. Eating again! The new Chairman (i.e me!) welcomed all members to our April meeting with a special welcome back to May Rodgers following a long illness. Our speaker was Ceri Joseph, secretary of the Museum and History Society who gave a splendid account of Porthcawl in the First World War. Tears but also laughter were the order of the day. Our next meeting is on 14th May 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when the speaker will be Mrs Leslie Olson – “From a Tent in Tanzania”. It sounds intriguing so come along and find out! Mynydd Cynffig WI Tuesday 8th April was once more our WI meeting held in our new and permanent venue, the Talbot Centre. We had a good turnout of members which included several new ladies which were warmly welcomed by our president Marjorie Goode. Minutes were read out by our secretary Enid Rymer. We discussed several items concerning forthcoming W.I. events and trips which will keep us busy in the year to come. With W.I. business over we were introduced to our guest speaker who was Rosemary Scadden. Her topic was what to do with a scarf. What she showed us was extremely interesting and we all went away determined to try and copy what she had shown us. If you see some ladies in the Pyle and Kenfig Hill area with some amazing scarves chances are they are our W.I. ladies. It was a good afternoon new members had a chance to meet old members, friends caught up with news and our interest groups i.e. walking, scrabble and sewing discussed future dates. We finished up our meeting with tea and biscuits. Our next meeting is on 13th May 2.30pm-4.30pm. Call in and join us, you’ll be surprised how many of us you will know and you can be assured of a warm welcome. Christine Callaghan

FINANCE Pension Freedom Is Here

£25 M&S Voucher Giveaway

As I mentioned in my last article, a number of important changes were introduced in the last budget which will affect those owning personal or defined contribution pension plans. While pension savers will have to wait until next April before gaining full access to their whole pension pot, a series of restrictions have already been loosened to give people more flexibility over retirement incomes. What has changed? Income drawdown: Income drawdown products allow you to take an income directly from your pension pot, which remains invested. The amount you can withdraw as income is based on the Government Actuary Department (GAD) rate, which is a similar level to annuity rates; this has now risen to 150% from 120%. Flexible drawdown: This works in the way the Government wants all pensions to work from next year in that you can take as much as you want from your pension pot, as and when you choose. To qualify, you need to prove that you have £12,000 (previously £20,000) of other guaranteed income in retirement. This could come from the state pension, an annuity bought with another pension pot, or a defined benefits pension. Small pension pots: If all of your pension savings in the pension schemes that you belong to are worth no more than £30,000, you may be able to take all of the money as a lump sum; this is called trivial commutation. 25% of this lump sum will be tax free with the rest being taxed at your highest marginal rate. Previously the limit for trivial commutation was £18,000. If you are affected by the changes and would like to discuss the options available to you, please do not hesitate to contact us.

With spring having arrived, seemingly, it’s time for getting you to engage with the information provided each month, so we’re giving away £25 M&S vouchers for the first correct answer drawn to the following question: ‘What is the minimum property value required for the exclusive interest-only mortgage for the over-65s mentioned in this article?’ Call 782545 or email to camfin@btopenworld.com with your answer and your details, the prize to be drawn on 15th May 2014. I have been inundated with enquiries regarding last month’s topic of mortgages for the over-55s. One lender in particular is mailing letters to customers with interest-only mortgages, enquiring about repaying the capital, especially where the mortgage is due to end in the next year or two. I have already assisted some people with a viable alternative, so if YOU have a mortgage that’s causing you concerns, call me on 01656 782545 / 07768 418308. By the time you’re reading this, mortgages will be operating under new rules imposed by the Financial Conduct Authority, whereby more information is required and more proof to the lender in order to obtain a mortgage. One mortgage lender has made it known within mortgage industry circles that it will expect branch customers to allow up to FOUR hours for a mortgage interview. As this would be impossible for a great many people, due to work and other commitments, increasingly borrowers will turn to whole of market advisers for help. We are able to provide tailor made appointments for mortgages, even on weekends – call 782545. We now have access to an exclusive interest-only mortgage for the over-65s which can also be used to offset possible Inheritance Tax (IHT) liabilities, with IHT advice provided by an appropriately qualified independent adviser. Minimum property value for this is £300,000 and borrowing is based on earned / pension income. Again, if you fall into this bracket, please get in touch. Hope you had a great Easter...now time to get things sorted!

Are You Thinking Of Working Past The State Pension Age? A research study conducted by Prudential called ‘Class of 2014’ reveals that one in four retirees are not ready to quit work, with 54% considering working past the state pension age so that they can boost their retirement pot. The research also reveals that 57% of people would consider delaying their retirement so that they would continue to be fit both physically and mentally. Knowing your options before retirement is key. There could be options open to you that you are unaware of and may mean you won’t have to work past the state pension age. Long gone are the days where one day you are in full time employment, the next fully retired. People are living longer and working beyond 65 years of age. If keeping yourself active in retirement is something you would like to continue then there are ways of doing this such as carrying out consultancy work in your field, working part time in an entirely different job, setting up a business, changing career direction, retraining, volunteering. If you haven’t yet retired and would like to discuss your retirement planning options contact us on 029 2050 8000 or visit www.bhifa.co.uk IAN DAVIES Bartholemew Hawkins Ltd 02920 508000 Seaside News | 32

GARDEN Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club

Laleston Gardening Club News

May is a glorious month, rich with promise and is the greenest month of the year (hopefully to match your green fingers!) The garden is coming alive and there is a lot to do. Deadhead your spring flowering bulbs. Snap off tulip heads and let the stalks and leaves remain for a minimum of six weeks. Sweet peas planted out earlier will be growing vigorously now and may need steering in the right direction! They just need a bit of support and they will twine themselves around whatever they touch (such helpful flowers!) Time to get busy in the veg patch, sow runner beans, plant out courgettes and marrows, earth up potatoes. Pour boiling water along seed rills before sowing, it will kill soil borne pests, getting the seeds off to a good start. We have a bus trip to Malvern Flower Show on 11th May. Interested in joining us? Phone Tracy on 743410, a smashing day out! Did you know – there are thirteen billion blackcurrants cultivated every year in Britain enough to give everyone on earth two each (have you had your yet?) Don’t forget to feed your roses – early to bed – early to rise – work like hell – and fertilise! Chris Early

Spring has truly sprung as I look at the blossom and leaves starting on the trees and it’s that time of year again to start planning your planting of seeds and buying of plants, flowers and veg. The garden at Cliff Cottage is starting to come into its own and we have been blessed with a fantastic display of tulips, Barbara and her team work very hard to keep it looking at its best. The committee are pleased to report that the work carried out on the three lintels and the kitchen roof has been carried out again enhancing the appearance of the building. The Lecture programme continues to be well supported and members and newcomers are ensured of a warm welcome. The next lecture is 12th May 2014, “The Heritage Coast: Part 2” with Helen Mills at 7.30pm. A date for your Diary is Laleston Gardening club’s plant sale on Saturday 10th May 2014, Free Admission with a wide variety of flowers & Vegetable plants at competitive prices plus a coffee morning with cakes and homemade cards a warm welcome awaits and we look forward to seeing you. Until next time, enjoy the sunshine and good growing! Simon J Nelson, Vice Chairman

Grandson Speak (For Matthew) I heard him say, “she’s hanging” What! from a tree, that’s tough Grandma dear, come on, keep up I mean she’s really rough! His brother’s room is “minging” Full of porcelain me thinks, Grandma you’re such a dinosaur I mean it really stinks! Our Sunday lunch was “ream” (Was it paper that we ate?) Oh Grandmama what are you like I mean it tasted great! A night out with the boys was “mint” Ah fresh breath all round I guessed Grandma dear your way behind I mean it was the best! LEGAL

PENSION CHANGES

Changes to the Court System In England and Wales 22nd April 2014 was a big day in relation to the procedure at family courts in England and Wales. From this date, family applications such as residence and contact matters are no longer made to the county or magistrates’ court, but instead to a new Single Family Court. The new Single Family Court is able to sit anywhere in England and Wales and all levels of Magistrates and Judges will be able to sit at them. This change will have the effect of reducing waiting times and will be a more effective use of judges’ time and will promote a more effective use of court staff and buildings. From 22nd April 2014, users submit their application to their local Family Court and it will be allocated to the most appropriate level of judge. Arrangements are being made so that ongoing cases which are currently being dealt with by the family proceedings or county courts will automatically continue in the Family Court. Any orders made in the old courts will still be valid and so it will not be necessary to make a fresh application to renew an existing order. The aim is to have a new court with a new structure where the work of the court will be directly managed by the judiciary and where all levels of judge and magistrate will be members of the same court, ie they will sit as “Judges of the Family Courtâ€?. Family Court Centres will usually comprise one or more hub courts and their satellite hearing venues will be at smaller courts. If you have any queries relating to this or any other family matter, please feel free to contact Melanie Lazarus and Co via phone or email. We offer a ďŹ xed fee for the ďŹ rst appointment. At a time when pensions are in the process of the largest overhaul for over 10 years, employers are well advised to consider their new duties says solicitor Aaron Hayward of Douglas-Jones Mercer. You may have seen adverts with celebrity business persons Theo Paphitis and Karren Brady reminding employees and employers that pension rights in the UK are changing. As a result of life expectancy continuing to increase and millions of people not saving a sufďŹ cient amount in readiness for retirement, new pension legislation was introduced by the Government which is now very much in force. Under the legislation, employers must automatically enroll all employees working for them into a workplace pension scheme which importantly provides a minimum employer contribution. Whilst employees shall therefore beneďŹ t from these changes, many employers have understandably voiced their concerns. Fortunately for employers, the process is staggered so that until fairly recently, this new legislation has only effected the large national companies. However, with many small to medium business in the process of receiving their “Staging Datesâ€?, Employers are well advised to start planning early and to understand their legal duties going forward. Employers need to begin putting in place the necessary policies and systems to make sure they are properly ready for their staging date, including ensuring that any contracts of

employment and staff handbooks are updated accordingly (or indeed put in place) and checking that their payroll system is equipped to deal with varying pension contributions. Employers also need to make sure that they properly notify their employees of the introduction of auto-enrolment and that no pressure is placed on employees to “opt outâ€? of the scheme. With ďŹ nancial penalties for non-compliance by a company employing 10 members of staff being up to ÂŁ500 per day, it is extremely important that all employers are well prepared in order to meet their legal requirements. With proper advice and forward planning however, the cost of such schemes and the risk of non-compliance can be greatly mitigated allowing the impact to any business to be minimised and employees to save for their future.

Consumers Risk Losing Everything Individuals who choose an unregulated will writer to draft their will risk leaving their loved ones in a legal minefield, warns RLE Law in Bridgend. RLE Law, which is one of only four firms in Wales accredited by the national Law Society’s Wills and Inheritance Quality Scheme (WIQS), is warning consumers that when it comes to buying a will they need to distinguish between advisers that are unregulated, uninsured and untrained. Adam Sampson, the Chief Ombudsman of the Legal Ombudsman (the body which investigates complaints about solicitors in England and Wales) has previously called for action to be taken to ensure consumers were not left vulnerable by unregulated services. However, to date no such regulation is in place. Emma Hardwidge, Head of the Wills and Probate Department said: “Your will is one of the most important financial and personal decisions that you will make. Currently there is no regulation surrounding will drafting so anyone is able to write a will, holding themselves out as an expert.” “Being accredited by WIQS demonstrates not only our commitment to putting our clients’ needs first, but also that we can assure consumers who wish us to prepare a will or manage the administration of their estate that they are using a regulated solicitors’ firm specifically endorsed for high standards in this area.” “It is extremely important to talk to a solicitor experienced in wills and probate who can make sure that the will is expressed in a way that is legally watertight and can also advise on complex financial issues such as inheritance tax and trusts planning.” WIQS is the first Law Society standard for delivering tailored wills and probate advice. In achieving accreditation, RLE Law underwent a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate their adoption of best practice procedures in delivering wills and probate advice. This benefits consumers by ensuring that they understand the issues in preparing a will or seeking probate advice, and are aware of the options, costs and timescales in order to make an informed choice from the outset. To discuss your legal requirements, please contact us on 01656 656861 or by emailing emma.hardwidge@rlelaw.com Emma Hardwidge, RLE Law

HEALTH Meditation Matters

Know Your Blood Pressure

Everyone knows who the Dalai Lama is. He pops up all over the place. What about his teachings and education system? Internet sources say he is the world’s most revered and famous spiritual teacher. So what! What has he done for little old me? Lots of people have a book on the home bookshelf somewhere. You may have read a couple of books and thought to yourself ‘Ah yes, that’s all good stuff’ and left it alone. Maybe like me there is something nagging in the back of your mind. A part of you that wants to jump in, but doesn’t know how. How can we make the shift from an idea to actual practice? The real fabric of the meditative life. Saturday 12th April was the day Porthcawl Rotarians invited residents and visitors to have their blood pressure measured. A total of 158 people called in to Trinity Church to avail themselves of this free test. Of this number, 20 people were advised to visit the doctor within the next month, and six were urgent referrals. High blood pressure is a major contributory factor to heart

A Warning About GMOs As genetically modiďŹ ed crops fail in several regions around the world and are exposed as a detriment to health, many are beginning to see right through the high-dollar false advertising claims projected by bio tech corporations like Monsanto. Note that in the 40s and 50s Monsanto made false safety claims about their own insecticide, DDT. By 1972, independent research showed the horriďŹ c consequences of this insecticide which ultimately led to the chemical being banned worldwide. Some regions, like South Africa, understand what Monsanto is about and are sending a strong message back to the corporation: quit wasting valuable resources, time and money promoting chemically prepared, genetically rearranged food. disease and stroke and it contributes to nine million deaths globally each year. Hopefully, the Rotary Club of Porthcawl, in conjunction with the Stroke Association, have helped raise awareness of how important it is for people to have their blood pressure checked and how important it is to remember that high blood pressure is both preventable and treatable. Rotarians are extremely grateful to all the volunteers who worked throughout the day, especially the health care professionals who gave their time so freely. POEMS Dark And Light

Remembrance

Black is the ink on the printed page. Black is the colour of blinding rage. Oil is the slick with rainbow sheen. Coal was once trees, but now unseen. Compost is life to the things we grow. When sunlight glints, on seeds we sow. Black is smart when worn outside. The sea looks black far out to tide. Night is the colour when stars shine bright. Glittering in darkness and sending light. Bridie Banwell, Bridgend

My children had two Grandads But I had only one My father lost his father Before his life began Each poppy day this little boy Would stand beside his Dad Head up, chin out and thinking Of what Dad never had. Now Dad was ne’er a churchman, Not seen or known to pray, Easter or Christmas could pass by, But not Remembrance Day. My other Grandad also died When I was very small. My Granny spoke of shellshock Which meant nowt to me at all. Some say remembrance praises war – Not so, I hope and pray, ’Cos I don’t know what most war’s for, Just the price that brave folks pay. O pointless deprivation, Their loss and others too, But still we keep on fighting, Is there nothing we can do? Andrew Collier, Porthcawl

Katie’s Child Oh, with what joy we welcome you, Katie’s child And with what love we’ll treasure you, Katie’s child So safe you lay in mother’s womb Until at last your time had come Your family, we’re here for you, Katie’s child Now Daddy too can care for you, Rhodri’s girl Protect you, love and cherish you, Rhodri’s girl Born into this nest of love A precious gift from God above You’ll scatter love and joy abroad, Rhodri’s girl Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

Parking Madness If you live by the borough schools, prepare for parents who park like fools. All I ask is a little respect, In and out of my house I’d like to get. Parents abandon cars without a care, ask them to move get a dirty stare. Surely it’s not that hard to see, That my drive was made for me. You block up lanes which are private parking, Your ignorance leaves me barking. I’ll only be a few minutes I hear you say, But that’s a problem when it’s my right of way. I wonder if some of you passed your test, Your parking really is not the best. You clearly don’t know the rules of the road, Or I could get to my abode. Don’t ask the schools for help at this time of day, The teachers back off wont have any say. As long as they have their space in school, They won’t get involved and that’s a rule. The PCSOs just smile and say we cant help on private rights of way. So thank you all for blocking my way. I hope you have a lousy day!! Mrs S Hamilton-Howell, Kenfig Hill Seaside News | 40

The Classroom Before Dawn Before dawn the lights were flickering Like a powerful torch without its battery Clocks were ticking like a hand waving. Vacuum cleaners were swallowing their victims by surprise. Perfect punctuation pyramids were Proudly pointing towards the creepy Cobwebbed ceiling. Empty juice bottles were lying Dehydrated and forgotten, Begging to be refilled. Pointy potent pencils were Severely scattered across desks. The projector gave a phosphorescence Light as bright as the marigold sun. Doors were constantly creaking as if Forced to be opened and closed by a invisible hand. The sound of a book being marked echoed. Multiplication grids gloated over Tables so high up in the breezy fresh air. As the sun rose the classroom went Back into its sleeping trance. Josie Lewis, Newton Primary School

There’s Light

Homage To Heroes

The gates of this void are seen, but it is endless, And paths of woe lay once too many crossed, The rifts torn in this fabric left unmended, Hearts sit cold and lonely, and know only of what’s lost. ‘Tween faithful heart and fearful mind I tumble, With any muse of sense left but ungrasped, And reassuring thoughts resigned to crumble, As weak as wounded soldier breathes his last. But through this crippling mist I’ll gain my sight, For even in the darkest dark, there’s light. Tom Connick, Bridgend

Let us bow our head in sorrow For those who’ll know no morrow, Neath desert moon or tropic sky Dying - praying, god on high That their fading dreams shall be Of dear fair england o’er the sea, Not jewelled temples, jungle lands Not yellow barren desert sands Mocking the weary eyes of man But of green hills and babbling brooks, Of blue bell dells and shady nooks Echoing. “the merry pipes of pan.” And as they close their eyes and see These visions from the land of free, Their glorious spirits seek to fly From where their broken bodies lie, To guard the home of liberty, from the vileness of tyrany. Lest we forget Ere youth was spent! They, Answered the call of humanity. Inscribe their names with proud lament On the pages of immortality! Enfold them “father” to thy breast, They deserveth eternal rest Ada E. Dodd, Kenfig Hill The poem was written in February,1941 during the bombing of Swansea

LOCAL BOOK REVIEW

BLIND JUSTICE The summer of 1976 was a hot one, especially for blind authoress Naomi Parker. A sixth sense told Naomi that someone was following her and when her friend, psychologist Dr Jesamine Garner, confirms that fact they decide to enlist the services of private detective Max Gwyther. As Max delves deeper into the case, he discovers that Naomi has attracted the attentions of three stalkers: a local crime lord, a respected enquiry agent and a mysterious American. What is their interest in Naomi? Why do they want Max off the case? And is there a connection to a journalist’s murder? Located in Porthcawl and surrounding villages, Blind Justice is the first novel in the Max Gwyther Mystery Series. The series is set in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and the books follow Max through a variety of cases, highlighting aspects of each era. You can discover more details about the series at http://jonesthebook.com and http://maxgwyther.com Published on the 18th April 2014, Blind Justice is available online from Amazon and from the Welsh Books Council website www.gwales.com. You can also obtain a copy of Blind Justice from all good bookshops and locally from the Cornelly Hardware Store. Daniela Jones Goylake Publishing Seaside News | 42

BOOK OF THE MONTH Unlucky 13 James Patterson When two dead bodies are found inside a wrecked car on the Golden Gate Bridge, Detective Lindsay Boxer doubts that it will be anything as simple as a traffic accident. The scene is more gruesome than anything she has seen before. It definitely wasn’t the crash that killed these people. While Lindsay starts to piece this case together, she gets a call she wasn’t expecting. Sightings of her ex-colleague-turned-ruthless-killer Mackie Morales have been reported. Wanted for three murders, Mackie has been in hiding since she escaped from custody. But now she’s ready to return to San Francisco and pay a visit to some old friends… All these books and many more are available free of charge from any Bridgend Library. Are you tired of reading the same old stories. Do you want to discuss a book with someone else why not try one of our reading groups. We now have two reading groups, one for adults meets over tea and biscuits on the third Wednesday of the month at 2pm. This month we will be discussing The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Our other group is for teenagers and meets on Friday 30th May at 5pm. They have cake or crisps and have been discussing books as different as Beautiful Creatures or Maggot Moon. Ask us for the latest book. ELAINE WINSTANLEY Porthcawl Library: Tel: 01656 754845 Email: porthcawllib@bridgend.gov.uk

ARTS A Film Maker’s Point Of View

Pyle & Porthcawl Photographic Society

I wonder if film directors in the past relished working in black and white, or whether they secretly yearned to shoot their films in colour? We shall never know the answer to that question, but today we can watch films from the 1940s like “Brief Encounter” and “The Third Man” and marvel at the atmosphere created by the black and white imagery. I am quite certain that these two films, and many others like them, would not be revered in the way that they are had they been made in colour. So why are films rarely shot in black and white these days? Because producers fear that they will not be commercially successful, that audiences will turn their backs on them, insisting that only colour films are acceptable. And they have a point, of course, because who is going to risk a large sum of money making a film if there is a distinct possibility that it will struggle at the box office? But sadly, audiences are being deprived of a genuinely unique means of expression, because black and white brings a certain quality that colour cannot match. Black and white takes away the realism of colour and replaces it with the abstract, which is something intangible but infinitely more exciting. Anthony Hontoir, Downwood Film Productions

We have had some excellent presentations and two competitions in the last month. The first competition was the portfolio competition, which was judged by Rob Mitchell and won by Richard Craze, with Geoff Baker and John Corcoran just missing out on the glory on the judge’s final decision. The second competition was the Alan Thomas Memorial Trophy for monochrome images, which was judged by Rob Greenhill and won by John Corcoran, with three photographers (Geoff Baker, Richard Craze and Martyn Derbyshire) sharing second place. Third place was shared between Marilyn Belojica and Glyn Edmunds. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps. co.uk. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, join us on Thursday evenings at the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. Porthcawl U3A & Jan Van Eyck’s Gown 1434 One of the National Galleries’ most popular works of art came to a recent Porthcawl U3A meeting in the form of a wonderfully illustrated and detailed talk by fellow member Geoff Henderson at the Hi Tide. Jan van Eyck’s masterpiece the Arnolfini Portrait painted in 1434 has been a great interest of his for more than forty years and this remarkable picture of Girl in a Green Gown as it is also known is acknowledged as one of the great paintings of European art. Supported with 50 carefully chosen pictures his talk took more than 90 members on a journey to appreciate its contents and unravel some of the mysteries embedded in this modest sized painting. Believed at one time to have invented oil paint, Van Eyck painted on oak and signed his frames, a common practice of the time and initiated a revolutionary way of painting with great visual realism, light and perspective. This first known double portrait in a domestic setting looks unremarkable but it has great history and is full of mystery with generations of art historians having failed to discover the secrets of the Girl in a Green Gown. Everyone is welcomed to visit our various interest group. Gary Victor, Porthcawl U3A

Porthcawl Male Choir News Every fourth year those choirs from all over Wales, who are members of the Welsh Association of Male Choirs, converge on London’s Royal Albert Hall to sing together in concert. In 2011, this famous venue was not available, so the concert was held in Manchester’s MEN Arena. Happily the next concert, often referred to as the ‘1000 Voices’ will, return to the Royal Albert Hall in May 2015. Porthcawl Male Choir has taken part in this prestigious event since it was formed in the early eighties. Rehearsals have already started and Porthcawl’s choristers travelled to Neath’s St David’s Church on Sunday 6th April for the latest. Mr Alwyn Humphries who is to be the concert’s Musical Director, also takes the rehearsals and insists on a very high musical standard. The next rehearsal will take place in Pontypridd. The choir has a heavy programme of events over the coming months ranging from weddings to charity concerts. In June it will travel to Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire to perform a concert in aid of local charities; this has become an almost bi-annual event enjoyed by both choir and audience alike. I wasn’t offered a part in ‘Stella’ when it recently filmed locally, but did do ‘Dr Who’. I didn’t play the Doc or his assistant but did get to say two lines: ‘Exterminate! Exterminate!’ The Hi-Tide charity night on May 2nd is cancelled. Apparently the stretch limo booked for ‘Lady and the Tramps’ wasn’t long enough! Promoter Alan Jones and I put on ‘Hells Bells’ (‘AC/DC’ tribute) and ‘Mojomatics’ at Hobos, Bridgend, and they were both brilliant. Hobos has got to be one of the best live venues in South Wales – two halls with a huge P.A. and lighting rig. Check it out on Fridays and Saturdays, and we’re putting a top ‘Doors’ tribute band – ‘Doors Alive’ – on at the venue on Friday 23rd May. Sad to see the Knight’s Arms about to be knocked into flats. Wouldn’t it be nice to make a DVD of it when it was run by my dear friends Ken and Pat Evans? Been busy recording, so hope to catch up with the Porthcawl music scene and my drinking chum Mark Jones of ‘The Guzzards’. Happy birthday to Abi J, vocalist with the ‘Cover Sluts’ for 22nd May, and welcome back Steve Strange from Japan and Jay Aston from the U.S.A. Stag Marks 07979 971127

Landscapes by J.D. Innes: Beauty Most Wild is now on show at The National Museum of Wales in Cardiff until 20th July. James Dickson Innes (1887-1914) was only 27 years old when he tragically succumbed to tuberculosis. Although he had a very short life, his profound engagement with the mountains and his visionary sense of colour left a unique legacy in British landscape art. In 1909, whilst on one of his trips to Paris, Innes fell in love with the tempestuous Bohemian beauty Euphemia Lamb, described as the “lady of his dreams”, by Augustus John. Unfortunately, Euphemia was married to another artist; she was also notorious for her numerous affairs and fickle ways. Innes increasing use of abstract design and bright naïve colours reflected a growing intensity of meaning. The subject matter, Arenig Valley, seemed to fill an emotional void, driven by his inconsistent affair with Lamb and the inescapable reality of his illness. Innes’ unique visions of otherworldly mountains under boundless skies gave British Landscape painting a new place among European Post-Impressionist art. Come and learn more about this much forgotten artist as part of the new Journey through Landscape Tours: 12:30pm, daily. Josephine Lewington MA

Tabernacl Music Society And The French Connection As the summer concert approaches, Tabernacl Music Society faces a major change. Musical Director, Kevin Adams steps down at the end of June, after 20 years. During this time the choir has been introduced to a broad repertoire which has included the major classical works, spirituals, songs from musicals, folk songs and works by Welsh composers including William Mathias and Karl Jenkins.

This year the event takes place from Saturday 14th until Sunday 22nd of June. Full details of all the events will be in the June issue of the Seaside News. The choir is in good health musically and is now in search of a new M.D.to take it forward from September. This post is to be advertised shortly. TMS’s final concert this season, marking the end of an era, will be on Friday 6th June at Tabernacl Chapel, Derwen Road, Bridgend at 7.00pm. This event will be special for two reasons. Firstly, it will be Kevin’s last appearance as M.D. and secondly, the French choir, ‘Chorale du Lac’, from Bridgend’s twin town, Villenave d’Ornon, are making a return visit to take part in the concert. Choir members will host their French guests for 4 days during which time there will be visits and entertainment, reciprocating the wonderful hospitality received by TMS last September during their visit to Villenave. Bridgend College Unbeaten Run Continues Bridgend College Football Academy’s first and second teams continue to excel in their respective British Colleges leagues. The first team’s recent 2-1 victory against second place Coleg Sir Gar at Stebonheath cemented their place at the top of the league. Chad Nicholas and Morgan Thomas were instrumental in gaining the lead, although controversy followed in the first half’s dying minutes with the Coleg Sir Gar striker tripping Bridgend College right back Jamie Miller, and equalising. The second half continued in the same vein. Corbin Bishop, Morgan Thomas and Tom Walters were involved in a move that resulted in Joe McCarthy beating the diving keeper to make it 8 games unbeaten. The College’s second team are also on top form beating Coleg Sir Gar 2-0. The visitors were well drilled and organised but the Bridgend College second’s passing and movement unlocked the defence and gained a comfortable lead with goals scored by Josh Hartfoot and Brad Young. The team now lie second in their British Colleges league, behind Fairwater first team but with a game in hand. Bridgend College are currently recruiting for next season. Director of Football and Sport Lecturer Jason Perry commented: “With the brand new 3G pitch currently under construction and discussions around our bespoke Sony Analysis Centre in the final stages, the future is very exciting for our students.” www.bridgend.ac.uk / 01656 302600

It has been another amazing year for Porthcawl Comprehensive School basketball players. The game is flourishing at the school with record numbers participating in 5x60 clubs (5 times a week) and links with the Cynffig Cougars are as strong as ever. The hard work, dedication and talent of Porthcawl’s players has been recognised this year with a record number being called up to represent Wales at international level; Ethan Waters U14, Ben Merchant U15, Gabriel Williams-Rumble U16, Morgan Carter U16, Lucy Edwards U16 and Emily Stradling U16 and U18. Point guard Stradling has two European missions this year at the FIBA European Championships for U16 Women in Malta and then two weeks later for the U18 Women in Andorra. Her talents have been recognised by local businessman and personal trainer David Quinn who has sponsored the young athlete this year and has taken her under his wing at QBA Fitness at New Road Porthcawl. As an ex Porthcawl Comprehensive pupil, David is keen to foster strong links with his old school helping to develop the fitness of young people at all levels. Nicola Evans

Rest Bay Nippers News Rest Bay Nippers enjoyed a very successful and fun packed 2013. There were many wonderful team and individual performances including an exceptional performance in the Welsh Open Water Championships and winning in Aberavon. Socially, hedgehog racing, where we raised £500, and paintballing were a hit with everyone. The Welsh Championships were held in Tenby on a glorious weekend in July. Most of the club stayed overnight and really enjoyed being together and with other clubs. We were blessed with outstanding weather, and witnessed several very impressive performances from our Nippers, who were once again a credit to the club. There were too many individual medal winners to mention, many of whom can now call themselves “age group Welsh Champion”, which is always a huge honour, considering the standard of competition. Overall the team finished a close 2nd to the usual winners Mumbles, an outstanding achievement from what was a relatively small team in comparison to other clubs. This success and others were then celebrated at the end of season presentation night where every Nipper was recognised for their contribution. Well done to coaches, Mums and Dads for helping make 2013 one of the best ever, and of course the biggest thanks must go to our Nippers for just being brilliant! Good luck for 2014, keep working hard, listening to your coaches and keep having fun through surf lifesaving! Andy Morgan, Training Officer Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Porthcawl Youth Celebrate Title Triumph Porthcawl Youth have emerged as champions of their section of the WRU Youth leagues after a string of superb performances in their first season under the coaching of Matthew Owen. The young Seaweeds compiled several comprehensive victories with their free-flowing style of rugby and only suffered two defeats on their way to the title: against Nantymoel and Bridgend Sports. Both of those losses occurred in a difficult November for Owen’s squad, but they rebounded impressively after Christmas to complete the double over Bryncethin. A frustrating weather-enforced break followed in February before Porthcawl celebrated St David’s Day by triumphing 21-0 at Bridgend Sports, their closest rivals. That result enabled them to avenge their earlier one-point reverse and ultimately clinched the title. Owen, who has been helped with the coaching duties by professional stars Tom Prydie (Dragons) and Lloyd Peers (Ospreys), praised the commitment of his players throughout the successful campaign. “They’ve trained hard and come together as a team,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed working with the boys. Over the season, we’ve become a strong team.” With the title in the bag, Porthcawl continued to entertain supporters in April with excellent wins against Taibach and Tonna. Huw Portway
