Civilians In The First World War
Flying
Dear Editor, Last year we remembered the start of the First World War. This year we celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War Two. Those who lived through those momentous years are now nearing the end of their lives, and before it is too late I would like to try to capture their memories in a book. A few months ago you were kind enough to publish my letter asking for anyone who lived through the war to contact me, and I am pleased to say the about twenty people did so. Some had served in the armed forces, others were children at the time. Their stories were fascinating, and I am deeply grateful to them for responding. However, in order to get a full picture of the war years I would love to hear from the civilians who made such a vital contribution: the women who went to work in the factories or on the farms to replace the men who had been called up, the air raid wardens, the firefighters, the ‘Bevin Boys’ drafted into the mines. They too have a story to tell. It may be that a relative who lived through the war has now passed away but has written their memories in a book or diary for the benefit of their grandchildren. If anyone has such an account and would be willing to share it with me, or if they have a story of their own to tell, please get in touch. My contact numbers are 01656 858812 or 07761 498284, and my email address is malcolmcowper@gmail.com Malcolm Cowper, Porthcawl

Charity Hair Chop For Local 8 year old Dear Editor, There’s not many acts of selflessness from children but this certainly was one –Ruby Harvey, aged 8, wanted to do something for charity so on Wednesday 4th March Ruby had 10inches of her hair cut off for the Little Princess Trust who make wigs for poorly children. At the same time friends and families sponsored her, she’s managed to raise nearly £200 for Jess’s Cancer Fight. Jessica Price is currently undergoing treatment for Leukemia in Cardiff so the money raised will be going there. We’re all really proud for her doing such a kind, thoughtful and brave act! Thankyou to all that have donated, it’s greatly appreciated. Emma Harvey, Porthcawl
Transformation Of Rest Bay Dear Editor, The transformation of Rest Bay in my lifetime has been quite remarkable. Living in Ogmore Vale before and during the war, we used to cycle to Porthcawl to enjoy an afternoon at Rest Bay, indeed I first learned to swim in some of the larger pools that existed amongst the rocks high up on the beach. In the early sixties, and bringing my son to visit my parents who then we’re living in Hutchwn’s Close, we were able to persuade Gran to cook the prawns for tea that we had fished out of the pools. In the early nineties when my late wife and I had ‘come home’ there were mussel beds and some variety of wildlife in the rock pools, but then the deterioration was becoming noticeable. It was hoped that when the Swansea effluent treatment plant was commissioned there would be a major improvement in water quality and a resultant improvement in seaweed growth and pond life. In truth the beach today bares little resemblance to that of 50 years ago why is this? It is obvious that we have lost at least 3 meters of sand from the beach. This in itself doesn’t explain the current state of affairs, but I would appreciate an analysis of the situation from locals with a more expert understanding than I. WTJ Davies, Porthcawl

SCHOOLS Porthcawl Primary News We have had an amazing month at Porthcawl Primary School. It started off with St David’s Day. We welcomed Ballochlean Highland Dancers to the school to show us their moves. It was a very loud and exciting performance and we even got to see Mr Wood play the bagpipes! There were also a number of competitions and performances from the pupils. The assembly ended with the Chairing of the Bard. Congratulations to Evie who wrote an exceptional poem about Porthcawl. This month we will be going to the Celtic Manor for the F1 in schools South Wales final. After designing our car using a special computer programme we have now painted it and spent the month testing to see how fast it can go. We have made huge improvements on last year and the car has the potential to go really fast on the day. Well done to Emily, Will, Shannon, Tia, Sophie and Tegan for all the hard work they have put in and a big thank you to our sponsors AutoBarnes and Wilmott Dixon. We also had a fundraising event for Comic Relief. Thank you to all the pupils and staff who came into school in their pyjamas and contributed to such a great cause. Andrew Wood
Bridgend Tuition Centre Embarks on a New Chapter Love to Learn Tuition is the new name for Bridgend’s leading tuition centre. Maria Moruzzi, formerly operating under the name Kip McGrath, has been teaching in the area since 2006 and recently has started a positive new chapter in her life by changing their centre name to Love to Learn Tuition and allowing the centre to evolve with the demands of the Welsh curriculum. Over the past eight years Maria Moruzzi has been a huge part of the Bridgend community; she has helped hundreds of students with their education and is investing heavily in the business in order to take it to the next level and strengthen the service. Maria is extremely excited about the future and is proud to have a fantastic team of tutors, who are all qualified teachers, working alongside her to ensure they continue to make a difference to children’s lives. Love to Learn Tuition have updated their resources so that children aged 5 – 16 get the best support possible and they are offering tuition in Maths, English and Science. At Love to Learn Tuition they realise that great tuition is more than just providing the resources; it’s also about providing the right atmosphere, motivation, and expert tuition so that children can feel positive and confident when learning. ‘We want to provide an opportunity to improve self-esteem and confidence, in an atmosphere of encouragement, where learning is fun! Our parents have been very supportive with the change and this is very much appreciated’. Maria is looking forward to this exciting next step of her journey and helping hundreds more students succeed. Love to Learn Tuition Tel: 01656 746701 Seaside News | 12
Porthcawl Comprehensive School There could only be one article from our school this month, the retirement as Chair of Governors of Mrs Maureen Carlson. Mrs Carlson has stepped down as Chair of the Governing Body, but will continue as a Governor. Mrs Carlson has given over 23 years of service to our school, the last 10 as Chair of the Governors. Mrs Carlson is a former art teacher and Adult Education Officer and has been heavily involved in the life of our school. Those who have had the privilege of working with Maureen will appreciate all she has done for our school. The sound advice, wise counsel and words of comfort and encouragement will be missed by all at our school. Mrs Allison Thomas has accepted the role of Chair of our Governing Body and together we look forward to the challenge of the future. We wish Mrs Carlson all the very best for her retirement, and the same sentiment for Mrs Thomas in her new role. Finally, well done to our 130 children who were recognised recently for their achievements at our annual PTA Awards Evening. Prizes were awarded across the school for academic as well as extra-curricular accomplishments and the evening was a great success. Andrew Slade Head Teacher
PCSO’s Visit Local School On World Book Day PCSO’S Kyle Maiden and Ceri Bowen attended Pyle Primary School on World Book day. They read a book of the pupils choice to both year 5 and year 6 children. PCSO Maiden said “It’s great to be able to come into the school today and take part in World Book Day. It’s important for us to engage with the pupils along with taking part in this event.” Headmaster Neil Price said “ Kyle and Ceri regularly come into the school and engage with the children. So today was another good opportunity for the pupils to see their local officers in different circumstances. “ PCSO Kyle Maiden 55667 Mobile 07825 503907 Email kyle.maiden@south-wales.pnn.police.uk

Andrew Wood

Corneli Primary News After a quiet start to the year, it has been really busy. Our Year 6 children had training in safely cycling on the road and such is the commitment to using our bikes, scooters and walking to school, we received our Bronze Award from Sustrans. We will also soon have super new bike shelters. Safety was also the message given to parents by PC Steve Carpenter in his talk highlighting the dangers to which children can be exposed when using the Internet. This was a very thought provoking meeting and he provided most valuable advice. St David’s Day was celebrated in traditional style with an Eisteddfod. We wore our daffodils and Welsh costumes with pride as each class performed a song, danced or recited poetry. Certificates were awarded to competition winners and we ‘Chaired the Bard’, Sophie Owen, who wrote a superb winning poem. Competition too on Fairtrade Thursday and at the Library Challenge where Harriette Williams and Molly Lacey were beaten into joint third place by just 1 point, well done all we are so proud! We are now looking forward to making our bonnets for the Easter parade. Sue Jones
Pupils Take Part In The Big Pedal Children at local schools across Bridgend County Borough jumped on their bikes and scooters recently for The Big Pedal 2015 – a national initiative which encourages pupils to stay healthy by finding more active ways of travelling to school and compete with schools across the UK to record the most journeys on two wheels. With more than 20 schools taking part, last year’s figure of 10,000 journeys was easily smashed and I’m looking forward to seeing what the final total is for 2015. The Big Pedal 2015 was organised by cycling charity Sustrans and supported by Bridgend County Borough Council. Children at participating schools enjoyed scooter skills sessions to emphasise how keeping fit with environmentally friendly ways of travelling can be fun, and the event reached an actionpacked finale with ‘Superhero Day’ when youngsters decorated their bikes and dressed up as their favourite caped crusaders. Last year, 76 per cent of schools who took part in the Big Pedal said that pupils continued to cycle and scoot to school after the event, so this is a great way of teaching children to be more active while helping to cut down on congestion and pollution. SCHOOLS World Book Day Quiz Winners! Despite it being a short half term, the build up to the Easter Holidays was a very busy time at St. Clare’s School. Pupils in the Prep School celebrated St. David’s Day in the annual school Eisteddfod, which was a brilliant day that made everyone proud to be Welsh. Pupils from our Nursery up to Year 6 all performed on stage, and the winners of the Poetry, Art and Handwriting competitions were announced. Well done to everyone for taking part, and special congratulations to the Saxons who were the overall winners on the day with the most House Points. Congratulations were also in order for our team of four Year 6 pupils who won the Porthcawl Library World Book Day Quiz, beating competition from other local schools to win the cup! The St. Clare’s team impressed the judges by scoring full marks in the quiz, and are now looking forward to attending the regional final in the summer. Well done Year 6! Pupils in the Senior School are now busy preparing for their external examinations and we would like to wish all Year 11, 12 and 13 students the best of luck with their studies over the coming weeks. Limited admission places are still available throughout the school for September 2015. If you would like to come in to meet with myself and my dedicated team of staff to discuss your son or daughter please contact Admissions on (01656) 789966. Simon Antwis, Headmaster
Nottage Primary News Well almost Easter and the school year is whizzing by! At the end of this term we say goodbye to two lovely ladies both of whom have been part of the Nottage team for many years. Mrs Jeanette Howell and Mrs Christine Southwell have both decided to retire from teaching in order to enjoy their new careers as grannies – sad news for us but lovely news for their lucky grandchildren. Their professionalism, dedication and expertise will be sorely missed. We wish them well. The beginning of March saw eggs and an incubator arrive in our Reception class. The children saw first-hand the arrival of new life as the chicks slowly emerged from their shells. Wow! March was a month of fundraising. Bandana Day for the Brain Tumour Charity raised £870 and Comic Relief raised £1,653.33. We also had the Big Pedal, World Book Day and our biannual Book Fair, which was once again organised by Mrs Judith Dickinson. Ty Sker was triumphant in the school Eisteddfod which culminated with the ‘Chairing of the Bard’ ceremony for the best poem entitled ‘Celebrate Wales’. This year’s winner was Lucy Honey-Hall of Ty De Londres. Da iawn! K M Townley, Acting Head Teacher

David Ryan Roofing World Book Day World Book Day at Pil Primary School was a tremendous success! The theme this year was ‘good role model readers’. The Mayor visited the school, the fire service, PCSO’s and Governors. They all visited classes and read a selection of stories to the children. On Friday 6th March two pupils from Year 6 took part in the Annual Reading Challenge in Pyle Library with other local schools. In a closely fought contest Pil Primary were successful and go forward to the next round in Maesteg. Also, Wates Construction has delivered ‘site safety’ workshops to all the classes. The children have entered a competition to design a poster and these will be displayed in their site office near Pyle Rugby Club. Many thanks to the mayor and all our visitors for their contribution. SCHOOLS West Park News
Afon y Felin News - Eisteddfod Results
West Park celebrated World Book Day with a wonderful themed day of exciting literacy based activities. Nursery took a trip through our deep dark Woodland! They were on the trail of the Gruffalo and were delighted to discover his friends hiding there! Infant pupils dressed as characters from Julia Donaldson books. They created story stones, treasure maps and bookmarks and filmed each others book evaluations. Junior pupils celebrated the author David Walliams. Mr Stink’s group made bath bombs while the Demon Dentist’s group studied the teeth and mouth. Mr Dennis thoroughly enjoyed teaching football wearing a dress! During the week we held a book fayre to raise money to improve our existing school library book collection. Charlie and Jake did West Park proud by taking part in the keenly fought Library Quiz Challenge. Year 6 pupils entered the Rotary Young Writers competition and we hope the judges will be impressed by their imaginative stories. The children’s love for books and reading was evident throughout World Book week and I would like to thank the staff for planning a range of magical activities and our parents and carers for their enthusiasm and support. The PTA will be holding their annual Fayre on May 16th - readers are welcome! Mr I Bird, Head Teacher

All the entries were of such a high standard the judges had a really difficult task, and all the children can be proud of their work, they were all winners! AJ Pritchard – Parent Governor
Newton Primary School Newton Primary spent an exciting day taking part in Fair Trade Fortnight! The children and staff came to school dressed in yellow and green and played Fair Trade games. The most popular was the banana game! At break time, the Eco Committee ran a Fair Trade cafe, selling Fair Trade snacks and juices and handed out Fair Trade Leaflets and stickers! This term has been such fun for nursery and reception pupils. They started this half term with an exciting Welsh week and celebrated it with a super Eisteddfod. The Nursery sang Heno Heno to the traditional tune whilst Reception jazzed it up by singing it to the tune of Frozen’s ‘Let it go!’ To celebrate Chinese New Year the children made special red envelopes and paper lanterns and experienced performing the dragon dance. The highlight of the week was most definitely eating Chinese food from a local takeaway. Year 5 & 6 have been very fortunate to have participated in digital composition sessions led by the creators of the iPad audio app called ‘FEED’. They will be creating soundscapes to accompany stories that they have written. Rachel John (Acting Head Teacher)

Hello again. We have been enjoying more cultural success this month. Our return from half-term saw our annual Eisteddfod once again celebrate some amazing talent, with wonderful musical performances, displays of linguistic skill and artistic endeavour. We were delighted to Chair Megan Stephens as our Bard, with Joseph Powell winning the crown for the best off-stage entries. Currently, we are in rehearsal for our annual Eisteddfod Concert for family and friends, to showcase just what our pupils are capable of. Hot on the heels of the Eisteddfod, three of our Year 11 pupils, Daffydd Atwood, Tom Howe and Lucy McArthur took part in the National Final of the English Speaking Union debating competition in the Assembly chamber of the Senedd in Cardiff. They were outstanding, and identified as potential barristers by the prestigious international judges. You may also have seen our in-house journalists featured on the BBC Website, for which they researched, wrote, produced and broadcast a range of features for Schools’ News. They were selected as school journalists of the week, and our website singled-out for an award, yet again demonstrating how impressive small, community-focused schools can be in the nurturing of pupils’ potential. Congratulations to all our achievers! Hannah Castle, Head Teacher Tel: 01656 740294

News No Sky Lanterns Allowed On Council Land And Property Bridgend County Borough Council recently joined the growing list of Welsh local authorities who have banned the release of sky lanterns and celebratory balloons from council-owned land and property. This is because what goes up must also come down, and that’s when problems can occur. It’s an increasingly important issue for an area like Porthcawl. Sky lanterns have generated many false alarms in coastal communities after being mistaken for shipping flares, and even sparked a large blaze in 2013 which caused millions of pounds worth of damage at a recycling plant in the Midlands. As well as causing litter – often in areas where they are unlikely to be removed – sky lanterns have been known to harm livestock and wildlife that has eaten the debris or become entangled in their wire frames. While sky lanterns are banned outright in countries such as Austria, Australia and Germany they are not currently illegal to use in the UK, so we can only prevent them from being released on council land or property. We don’t want to spoil the enjoyment of anyone who is celebrating a special occasion, but safety has to come first, and I think this is a very sensible decision. Councillor Mel Nott OBE Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
Safe Standing At Football Grounds Should Be An Option In August last year, the Liberal Democrats announced that a plan to allow football clubs to work with their supporters to introduce safe standing areas would appear in their 2015 general election manifesto. Safe standing already operates in domestic leagues across Europe, including Germany, Austria and Sweden. 70% of UK football clubs support safe standing and fans say standing provides a better atmosphere. Watching football is expensive. Safe standing areas allow clubs to accommodate a higher density of supporters safely which can mean cheaper ticket prices for all. Ticket prices for standing areas abroad are typically lower than in seated areas making the stadiums more socially inclusive. It is important that we get this right, and what we are definitely not calling for is a return to the terraces of the 1980s. What we have seen in top-tier football across Europe is ‘rail seating’ stands, which works very well. Safe standing would offer supporters more choice, a better atmosphere in the stadium and even cheaper tickets. Many clubs and their fans are in favour of this. The Government shouldn’t get in the way of it happening. We want to change the law to allow safe standing to become a reality. Jennings Proposals To Complement Town’s Regeneration I’m excited about the restoration of the Jennings Building, which forms an important element of our ongoing regeneration plans for Porthcawl. The Jennings is such a prominent building on the waterfront and its conversion into a modern restaurant and café will bring it back into use for residents and visitors to enjoy. The building’s conversion also includes first floor office space combined with loft bedroom areas, and the development will bring with it up to 30 local jobs during construction and in excess of 80 permanent jobs when completed. We all want Porthcawl to flourish as a first-class 21st century coastal resort and the conversion of the Jennings Building will complement the newly developed marina. An announcement will also be made soon about the Townscape Heritage Initiative, which will see a number of historic buildings around the harbour and square restored to their former glory using traditional materials and methods. Built in 1832, the Jennings Building is part of the fabric of Porthcawl’s history. We therefore felt it vital for the building to be converted in a sensitive way that retains its original character and developers ABA Holdings have an excellent track record in working on similar listed buildings across South Wales. Advertising and pricing are crucial for an effective sale Simon Williams, Valuer at the local branch of Peter Alan, talks about the importance of accurate pricing and online advertising. When selling your house it is imperative that you receive as much as possible for your property within a reasonable amount of time. This is why it is vital that each property on the market is priced realistically and accurately. Simon Williams said, “With Peter Alan you can count on our knowledge of the Porthcawl area as our staff are all highly trained, experienced and local. This is backed up by us carrying out thorough price comparisons from several sources, ranging from historical land registry data to sales data gained from internet portals. Having this amount of detailed information helps us give a very accurate appraisal and therefore remove confusion for our vendors by correctly ascertaining what price they are likely to achieve.” If you are looking to sell your house you will need to ensure that it is promoted extensively. In a competitive market and with over 90% of property hunters starting their search on the internet, it is essential that your property is seen by the widest possible audience online. Unlike many other agents, Peter Alan advertise your property on both of the UKs biggest property websites Rightmove.co.uk and Zoopla.co.uk and also on their own new look website peteralan.co.uk, guaranteeing that your property will be in front of the biggest audience of home hunters around. Our experienced staff will accompany all the viewings at your home, showing potential buyers around and obtaining their feedback/offers for you. In addition to marketing your home online, we still use traditional advertising in local papers and in our branch on John Street. Peter Alan was has been crowned the Best Estate Agency in Wales for four consecutive years by the Sunday Times as well as being named the Best Letting Agency in Wales, for three years running. Simon continued, “It’s great to be part of an organisation that is recognised nationally as being the best of the best. Every member of our team is passionate about selling property and always delivers an excellent level of customer service, ensuring that our clients continue to use us again and again.”

News Glimmer Of Hope For Porthcawl Regeneration
General Election – Question Time In Porthcawl
I’m very pleased that Bridgend County Borough Council, after a worrying period of uncertainty, has finally been able to make an announcement about the future of Jennings’ Building in Porthcawl. The council has decided to go with ABA Holdings’ scheme, which will see the Grade 2 listed building restored and converted into a kitchen restaurant, a smaller cafe, and accommodation for creative industries providing both living and working space. This latter proposal is very innovative and should allow very small businesses a place to start up - providing rents are affordable. However, I am looking for reassurances that these attractive plans enhance and dovetail with the exciting Maritime Centre Harbourside project also under development. BCBC does not enjoy the best reputation for joined-up thinking but the harbour area is an ideal site for development according to a vision in which the community has a real stake – and in which it has had a real say. After years of stalemate, it seems that the long-awaited boost to Porthcawl’s tourism offer may at last be about to happen in a small way. The bigger questions about a vision for Sandy Bay and Salt Lake still remain.
The charity, Sustainable Wales, is organizing a General Election Question Time. This will be held at the Y Centre in John Street 7.30pm, Tuesday 14th April. The General Election takes place on the 7th May. The Question Time will be chaired by Bruce Kennedy, exchairman of Sustainable Wales, and a former journalist and Head of Programmes for HTV. Representatives of Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Plaid Cymru, Green and UKIP are invited to speak for two minutes maximum on why people in the Bridgend constituency should vote for them. This will be followed by questions through the Chair. The six prospective parliamentary candidates have all been invited to represent their parties. Questions for consideration can be delivered to Sustainable Wales by email or signed letter to 5, James Street, Porthcawl CF36 3EP info@sustainablewales.org.uk

FEATURES Y Cefn Gwyrdd
Report On Probus Club
The first months of 2015 have brought many changes and uncertainties to Cefn. The Gwyrdd was formed to save the ironworks from collapse and is now owned by the Council but the future of the surrounding Bedford Park is unclear due to cut backs. Watch this space. One of our aims is the preservation of buildings of importance and two of these – the White Lion and the Three Horseshoes, have been sold but luckily will be kept as private houses rather than being demolished. Another change sees the sad closure of the post office, which has been on Cefn Road since 1917. The former memorial bus shelter, which will house a history panel, has also had problems with the discovery of asbestos and the clean up was not helped by the chaos of the signals – which for a while were the same on both sides! Work has now been completed and the new look shelter awaits the history panel. Bev’s funeral is still remembered in the village. He loved Cefn! He would play guitar at our barbeque and once carol singing was accompanied by Bev and his accordion! Neville our chairman is now much improved following his recent spell in hospital. John Mason
The Retired Professional & Businessmen’s Club meeting took place recently at the Grove Golf Club, Porthcawl. The speaker was Roy Noble OBE, DL, CstJ and his subject ‘Backward to the future’. Roy spoke about his careers as head teacher, broadcaster, journalist and author in his own inimitable way, in a most amusing and self deprecating manner, which is vintage Roybrilliant! Each meeting is followed by lunch with the opportunity for fellowship with both the speaker and fellow members. Trips are arranged and visits to other Probus Clubs are taken. If you would like to be a guest at our next talk, please contact: Mr Brian Willment Tel: 01656 785840
News From The Talbot Many people in Kenfig Hill and surrounding areas will recall some years ago there was a popular ‘old age’ group that met regularly in the Don (now the Bengal Lounge) in Pisgah Street. We at the Talbot are starting a new group for 50 years and over. It is intended to hold these meetings, monthly to begin with, on the first Tuesday of every month, beginning 5th May, and will be held in the Talbot, Prince Road, Kenfig Hill. So keep an eye open for posters around the village giving more information, or of course you could visit our website: www.talbotcc.co.uk. Meanwhile, we are continuing with our internal alterations by joining both buildings together. Phase III will involve the removal of the stage area, and building a corridor from the Talbot Hall into the Rees Hall. This will prevent users having to leave one building to gain access to the other. We will then purchase a portable stage to use whenever necessary. It is not too late to come with us to the Malvern Spring Garden show on Sunday, 10th May - phone Cheryl on 01656 749754 for more information. Cheryl Butcher
Through Christian Eyes What does Easter mean to you? For children it means Easter Eggs and school holidays. As we grow and take more notice of the world around we see new life in rabbits, lambs and flowers. For others it is the Jewish Passover when Moses led the Israelites to their promised land. For Christians it means ‘Jesus is Alive!’ Around the year 30AD the Romans put three men on crosses on a hill outside the city of Jerusalem. Crucifixion was the most brutal and public form of capital punishment. In the middle was Jesus the Christ, (the Messiah or Anointed One). On either side were two violent robbers. At first the two robbers heaped scorn on Jesus, but as the morning wore on, one of them had a change of heart and mind. Recognising Jesus’ innocence he reached out in simple faith., ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom’. At that moment he received forgiveness and the promise of eternal life, ‘today you will be with me in paradise’. There is forgiveness and eternal life for all who will reach out in simple faith to Jesus Christ. This Easter why not check it out at a church near you. Rev.Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

Porthcawl Parkinson’s Support Group
Porthcawl Stroke Club News
At our February meeting of the Porthcawl Parkinson’s Support Group, Mr Mike Boyle showed a series of films depicting images and music of World War One. He told us how some of the old songs came about and asked to join in with the singing. It made us think of all the young soldiers who lost their lives or were wounded during the “Great war”. We are a very special group – you have to have Parkinson’s (or be a carer) to join us and enjoy the company of others who understand the condition. We meet in the Untitarian Chapel, school room at 10:30 on the last Friday of every month. For further information contact 01656 783071
Every spring we set aside time to plan for the coming year, so in March we made some important decisions. As an international organisation we are involved in elections for representatives on our international committees who could be from such faraway places as India, Australia, the USA and from our own country quite a challenge. The club is a part of an Inner Wheel District and we elect members to sit on the District Committees. Also, we have to run our own club with officers and committee elected from the Porthcawl membership. We had such a busy club meeting in March there was no time for a speaker! However, we did make plans for the Handover Tea in June when this year’s President will hand over responsibility to the incoming President. The Past Presidents and the current committee members traditionally have a joint dinner before the Hanover takes place. This will be held in April. We are holding a Coffee Morning in Trinity Church hall on the 24th April. Tickets are £2 each. The money raised will go into our charity fund. We look forward to seeing you there. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent
Mr Glyn Edmonds, a very amiable man and his lovely wife from the Pyle & Porthcawl Photographic Society gave a wonderful presentation on a magical Tasmania, which included really breath taking shots. How Glyn captured those magnificent photo shots is astounding. The screen was full of unusual birds of prey, tigers, lions elephants, hippopotamus, giraffe’s etc. It was a delight to experience the safari trip. There were several species that we had never heard of before or seen for that matter. This is the second presentation of Glyn’s work and anyone who is fortunate to enjoy the presentations will indeed be in for a treat. From all the Porthcawl Stroke Club, we thank you so much Glyn for making our evening so enjoyable and interesting. Barbara Matthews
May Day In Bloom May 1st this year has been designated a National Flower Arranging Day. “What has that got to do with me?” you may well ask. Well, Porthcawl is very lucky in having a well-known and highly regarded Flower Club with many talented flower arrangers amongst its members. On May 1st there may be some flower displays in the town but there will certainly be small posies of flowers called ‘A Lonely Bouquet’ dotted here and there, looking for a friendly home. Please take one of these home with you to enjoy. The members of Porthcawl Flower Club hope that these lonely posies will give all those who find them a great deal of pleasure. Tools For Africa –Tools for Self Reliance We managed to get large carpentry kits with 98 tools and large auto mechanics kits with 70 tools off to Sierra Leone at the beginning of the month. This was a shipment to training organisations sponsored through the Sierra Leone Council of Churches as restrictions are slowly lifted. The Ebola Crisis also meant there was a shortage of dress fabric and with the help of Trinity Church and various shops in Porthcawl we were able to supply a large quantity so the seamstresses can get to work replacing clothing that had to be burnt. We would like to thank Porthcawl Lions and Sustainable Wales Town Partnership for the opportunity to sell tools at their events on 27th and 28th March Respectively. We are regularly short of the following tools – anvils, spoke shaves, drawknives, large cross point screwdrivers, double pinion hand drills, breast drills, wood chisels, foot pumps, sliding bevels, mortice gauges, claw hammers, vices both carpentry and engineering. We do not want gardening tools except, pick axes, shovels and spades. We thank everyone for the generous support and for keeping us supplied with suitable tools for renovation. We can now manage with a few more volunteers for our workshop. If anyone is interested please ring 786367. Anyone wanting a day sorting out would be appreciated. John Hanson Group Coordinator

FEATURES Porthcawl Townswomens Guild News We have had a busy time since my last report. We celebrated our 61st birthday with a luncheon at the Grove Golf Club with great entertainment from Carys Evans and her son Teilo on harps and violin. Our monthly indoor games afternoon is going well – rather noisy at times as we are very competitive! Our literary group delved into “Romantic poetry” and we attended another of the Pavilions lunchtime dramas. At our AGM the same officers were re-elected but we have a change in our President – an honorary position held for one year by a member who has given great service to the guild. Dee Richardson has retired to the back benches after 20 years on the ‘top table!’ Freda Rodger is our new President. Members were informed of outings to Llanelli House in May and to Tredegar House in August. We also attended the Federation AGM in Cardiff and enjoyed a splendid tea. Our next meeting is on April 8th when Mr Clive Williams will give a presentation on ‘The Life and Music of J.S. Bach.’ All welcome – please come to All Saints Church Hall at 2pm. Dorothy Thomas
Life With Porthcawl Lions
Porthcawl Lions club members are still on a high following the visit to the club of Lions International President, Joe Preston from Arizona, two past International Directors and the club’s District Governor. The visitors were met at the lifeboat station by Porthcawl Lions President, Gloria Ward and introduced to club members, members of Porthcawl Comprehensive Leos and members of the Porthcawl branch of the RNLI. After being shown displays of the work done by members of all three clubs and an exchange of gifts, it was on to the Prince of Wales for a Welsh lunch and a brief history of the building and area before going on to the Senedd for a guided tour by Bethan Jenkins AM. A very busy day for all, but a great honour for Porthcawl Lions as it is only the second time in Lions’ history that an International President has visited Wales. Club members are hoping that the Porthcawl Lions social evening to be held from 8pm on Tuesday 28th April at the Y Centre is just as successful. Everyone is welcome, so do please come along, meet club members and see a little of what Porthcawl Lions do while enjoying a glass of wine and light refreshment. A reminder for some of the club’s forthcoming events are the May Fayre and Vintage Fair. John Cosson Photo is of the International President, other official guests and members of Porthcawl Lions, Leos and members of Porthcawl RNLI.

Rotary Club of Porthcawl International Evening
The Rotary Club of Porthcawl recently held its annual International Evening at the Hi Tide. Every year, the club invites students from Atlantic College to share an evening of music, food and worldwide cultures and this year was no different. Fourteen students and a hundred and eighty guests were wonderfully entertained by Porthcawl Amateur Operatic Dramatic Society’s Broadway Chorus and Broadway Babes, led by Mike Plowman and compered by Barrie Wilson. Their programme included songs from their up-coming production of The Wizard of Oz. After their meal, the students (from as far afield as Japan, Russia, Burkina Faso, Namibia, Israel etc.) related their thoughts about Wales and enlightened their enthralled audience about each student’s country and cultures. National anthems were sung, histories were spoken about, the colours on flags were explained, poems were recited and folk dances performed. Many readers will remember Father Cashin from Porthcawl and will know that he has undertaken missionary work in Zambia. The Rotary Club is pleased to report that proceeds from the International Evening will be donated to fund a water project in Father Cashin’s mission in Nalwei. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Newton WI In our March meeting we were pleased to welcome home our President Pearl Mason from her recent journey to New Zealand. The meeting then commenced with the signing of the minutes and all other WI business and news. The guest speaker was Janet Jennings who gave a very interesting talk on the ‘Variety of hats through the ages’, starting with the Victorian era to the present time. The talk was accompanied by a display of wonderful hats, from small black Victorian bonnets, large elegant Edwardian hats, cloches, kangol, to the fascinator - which is widely worn today. All our members thoroughly enjoyed the talk and hat display, which for some brought back many memories. The Committee were thanked for the ‘Pancake morning’ especially Shirley and Anna for all the very tasty pancakes they cooked. Great fun and laughter was had with the ‘Tossing of the pancake’ competition, which was won by Malen Jones, the wooden spoon going to Pat Theodore. There is plenty to look forward to in the coming months, so if you would like to join us contact Pearl Mason on 772657. M Freeman
Mynydd Cynffig WI Our last meeting took place on the 2nd Tuesday of March in our usual venue – The Talbot Centre. Our meeting had a good turn out with a new member attending having read about our WI in the Seaside News! The meeting was chaired by president Marjorie, with minutes read by our secretary Enid. Members who attended ‘A taste of Wales’ in Llanharry said how much they enjoyed the day, especially the talk on cheese making, as did the members who attended the service in Llandaff Cathedral. It was the 100th anniversary of the formation of the WI in Wales and the cathedral was packed. It was our chance to parade the new banner which we had made, then it was time for our speaker Pat Johnson – her talk on “what goes on in her shed” we have been eagerly awaiting this talk and we were not disappointed. Pat makes felt in her shed and listening to her telling how she makes it, the samples of the items she makes with the felt was entertaining. Maureen gave a vote of thanks. Our next meeting is on the 14th of April, and our speaker is Mr Davies. Topic – Weird Wills. Look out for some laughs. Christine Callaghan
Coychurch WI President Sandra Davidson warmly welcomed guest Pat Jones and everyone present. The meeting commenced with Mrs Hurry – Head Teacher of the village primary school, introducing the programme of events that had taken place at the school’s Eisteddfod to celebrate St. David’s Day. Some of the children then entertained us by playing the piano, violin, guitar, reciting poetry, performing creative dance and the school choir sang Dydd Gwyl Dewi and Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah. The concert concluded with the children and audience singing the National Anthem. With such a wealth of talent the school, teachers and parents must feel justly proud. Mrs Hurry kindly invited the WI members to attend the school for their 2016 Eisteddfod. Following the business of the meeting, a draw for members interested in attending a special WI Royal Garden Party in the presence of HRH the Duchess of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace, was won by Ann Davies and a hopeful Jean Jakeaway - if Seaside News | 32
another place becomes available as numbers are limited. The meeting ended on a Welsh theme with Welsh cakes and Bara Brith served with tea and coffee and social time. The next meeting will be held on 7th April at 7.30pm in the Williams Memorial Hall with guest speaker Janet Israel, her topic, ‘Know Your Numbers’. For details and further information on future events please contact Sandra Davidson on 01656 669232. Guests and new members very welcome to join us. Janet James
Sker WI News The March meeting of Sker WI was held recently and congratulations to the darts team on winning the recent competition - well done. The speaker for the evening was Mrs Ceri Joseph from the Porthcawl Museum on ‘Porthcawl during the War’. During the 1914-1918 Great War the population of the town grew as there were several training camps in the area with a continuous stream of soldiers passing through. Whilst in the town the troops used the YMCA building and also the Coliseum, which is now the Spar shop. From 1915 The Rest was used as a Hospital until 1919. Some Belgian refugees came to Porthcawl and integrated into the community. There were also some German prisoners who helped build Griffin Park. It was a very interesting and informative talk. During April we have several things to look forward to including the Birthday Supper and Lunch with a Fashion Show. The next meeting will be on Thursday 9th April at 7pm in St David’s Church Hall, Nottage. The speaker will be Mrs Pat Johnson on ‘What does she do in the shed?’ Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond

Laleston WI News President Margaret Aylen welcomed members to the March meeting and secretary Diane Marshall read out the previous meeting’s minutes; which were approved and signed. The business of the evening included arrangements for the Federation Lunch & Fashion Show in Mumbles on 22nd April and bookings for the Council Meeting in Port Talbot on 6th May. A ballot was held to select a member to represent Laleston WI at a special WI Royal Garden Party on 2nd June at Buckingham Palace, resulting in 1st Margaret Aylen and 2nd Barbara Rees, whose names will be forwarded to a further ballot at the National Federation in London. The speaker Steve Gorwell, who retired from the police force after 30 years service, gave a very interesting and amusing talk on his experiences from joining as a new recruit, through his postings in various places and his latter duties as a Traffic Officer. A vote of thanks was given by Jackie Harris and the evening ended with tea, coffee and Welsh cakes in celebration of St David’s Day. At our next meeting on 2nd April at 7.15pm in Laleston Gardening Club the speaker Margaret Rogers will share her experiences as an Olympic Games Maker at the 2012 Olympics. Visitors warmly welcomed, for information call Margaret on 01656 660384 or Diane on 01656 656600. Margaret Aylen Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Finance Confused? You May Be Annuities, Capped Drawdown, Flexi Access Drawdown, Uncrystallised Funds, Pension Lump Sum (UFPLS), Scheme Pension & Nominees or Successors Drawdown Account. These are the potential options now available to a person looking to take benefits from their pension schemes or for the beneficiaries of a deceased pension scheme owner. Each can be used in isolation or in combination and each has its own tax rules and pitfalls. Ensuring that you select the best option for your hard earned lifetime’s savings has never been so important. The government is aware of this and will introduce a new pension guidance service called “Pensions Wise”. This will be available to everyone wishing to take pension benefits after 6 April as a free, impartial service to help consumers understand their options at retirement. The service will be provided by The Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS) and the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). The guidance will be accessible via the internet, telephone or face to face – TPAS will provide telephone guidance and CAB will provide face to face guidance. You can contact TPAS on 0845 601 2923, or you can visit your local CAB office for more details. The service they will offer however will be guidance only. At no point will they be allowed to provide you with specific advice. To use an analogy: you visit your GP because you’re feeling unwell; the GP asks a number of questions, carries out a few tests and diagnoses the problem which he/she recommends should be treated with medication. When asked which medication, the GP is unable to prescribe a specific drug, telling you that you will need to find out for yourself or seek the advice of someone who is able to prescribe the correct medication. At One Life Financial Planning Ltd we can provide you with both the guidance and the solution. Chris Ellis One Life Financial 01656 785700
Fantastic Exchange Rates & ‘Money Shop’ Borrowing This month we look at two very different areas of need. The first one is regarding the problems people experience when their circumstances make it difficult to meet criteria for standard borrowing methods. People that do not own their own home or who have a need to borrow small amounts of money or take unsecured loans, are most often turned away because they fail lending criteria and are left empty-handed. Similarly, those that DO have assets but cannot borrow further against their property, also need help in finding a solution. Well, we are pleased to announce that we have an arrangement with a specialist FCA-regulated firm, based in Cardiff, whereby you can even borrow against the value of your car, gold, smart tablets and computers and various other items. Items can also be pawned to raise short-term cash quickly and money transferred overseas to most countries, as well as a cheque-cashing service! (a fee is payable for this). All you have to do is give us a call on 01656-782545 and we’ll ensure the right person deals with your enquiry. CURRENCY EXCHANGE – we probably all know that changing cash for foreign currency in a bank or similar does not always give you a good rate. Well, now you don’t have to worry, as our Seaside News | 34
arrangement can get you possibly the best rates anywhere. At the time of writing, our customers can enjoy a pound Sterling to Euro rate of 1.385, way higher than many outlets. Let us know your requirements, make your Sterling payment and your currency can usually be delivered to your door, although there may be a small charge for this depending on distance from Porthcawl / Bridgend. Whatever your needs from the above, please call on 01656 782545 / 07768 418308 and we’ll be pleased to help however we can. Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545
Eagerly Anticipated New Retirement Rules What many may have missed, and you’d be forgiven for doing so, is communications issued to providers by both the FCA, and The Pensions Regulator. Both regulatory bodies have determined that flexible access to pensions is an area of significant concern and have set out similar, but not entirely mirrored requirements for providers to follow. In essence, these new requirements will on the one hand help ensure that consumers can make an informed decision, whether by accessing financial advice, or the Government’s impartial advice service, Pension Wise. Both regulatory bodies now perceive that the consumer is best served by following a stepped process of communication. Both regulators are keen to ensure separation of each stage so fast-tracking access will not be possible; it is inevitable as things stand that each client will need to go through a far longer process than currently exists to allow for access. There appears to be one distinction drawn between the regulators: the FCA consider that the process providers must follow can be shortened where a regulated adviser, on giving regulated advice to a client, engages directly with a provider and conducts a transaction on a client’s behalf. In a nutshell, when considering flexi-access drawdown, it is important to recognise that a) your provider may not be able to offer you this functionality and b) to adhere to strict regulation will either make individuals jump through hoops to access their pension or to have sought independent financial advice. We fully concur with the regulator that many risks exist in accessing flexi-access drawdown and therefore individuals seek advice before rushing to withdraw their fund. Bird Watch: Nest Boxes
Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club
We can help cavity-nesting birds to find a breeding site by providing nest boxes. There are three main types: tit box (featuring a round hole), open-fronted, and specialist. Blue Tits prefer boxes with a smaller hole (25mm) than Great Tits (28mm) and although Nuthatches prefer a larger hole they often make it smaller by plastering the entrance! Open-fronted boxes are good for Robins and Pied Wagtails. Specialist boxes are available for House Martins and Swifts, which resemble their natural mud nests. Ensure the box is protected from wind, rain and strong sunlight. Attach the box securely to a sturdy structure (e.g. fence post, tree or wall) in a quiet spot, around 2 metres off the ground. Never place adjacent to feeders or bird tables (adults may spend more time defending the area around the box than raising their brood). You can monitor nests for conservation through BTO Nest Box Challenge (www.bto.org/nbc). I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. We are due 89mm of rain this month but remember ‘April showers make May flowers’. Time to start pruning! Trim all silver leafed plants like lavender to keep them compact and bushy, avoid the older woody stems as they hate that! Feed trees and shrubs especially roses, these are greedy plants and will greatly appreciate a good feed Lift and divide hostas before they come into leaf, just split then up with a sharp spade. In the vegetable plot leeks need to be sown now for an autumn harvest, sow directly into a seed bed, or in a cold frame to be planted out in May or June (lovely for Cawl!). Plant bulbs this month, Canna lilies, Gladioli for a stunning summer display. Did you know the amount of Radishes sold in the UK last year weighed the same as the Eiffel Tower? We have an Easter Bonnet and decorated egg competition in the Green Hall Saturday 4th April, between 10 and 12am come and let your artistic juices flow – we will replenish them with a nice cup of tea and slice of cake! Prizes for the winners. Definition of a knee - a device for finding rocks in your garden! Chris Early

Laleston Gardening Club By April spring should really be on its way, the soil is warming up nicely and everything growing away. We can’t be too complacent though, as our lady gardener at Cliff Cottage (Barbara) says, she well remembers snow and ice late March early April best keep an eye on the weather forecasts. April can be a really busy month, not just early potatoes and onions, but all the other seeds that you have waiting, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, cabbage etc. Lots of activity in the club since Christmas, committee members have been washing all the pots and containers ready for the annual plant sale to be held in May. They are now at the planting out stage. The trays are being transferred to borrowed spaces in member’s greenhouses. Some of our allotment gardeners tell me they are starting the sweet corn off indoors. The sweet corn hates root disturbance so gently does it. Sweet corn needs a lot of nitrogen and a teaspoon of dried blood per plant or the chemical urea with water. Gwen Bradford

As part of your will, you may wish to leave assets to your spouse, civil partner or children. Alternatively, you may wish to pass assets to your next of kin whilst you are still alive. One way of doing this is to set up a family trust as Jonathan Powell, Director and Head of the Estates and Trusts Department explains: Trust basics A trust enables a ‘settlor’ to give away assets, but on terms that they will be dealt with in a certain way. Legally, ownership of the assets (the trust property) passes from the settlor to the trustees of the trust who must look after the assets according to the terms of the trust deed. These will say who the trustees are, identify the beneficiaries, and how the trust is to operate, for example, to hold money for a child until they attain a certain age, or to pay income to a spouse during their lifetime and then give the trust to the children. A settlor can set up a trust during their lifetime or can provide for a trust to be set up in their Will. Some settlors also write a ‘letter of wishes’, which gives guidance to the trustees on how the settlor would like them to administer the trust assets. This is not legally binding, but can be helpful to the trustees if the trust is a discretionary trust, ie the deed gives the trustees wide-ranging powers to decide how the benefits are to be shared out. The trustees have a legal duty to act fairly, balancing the interests of different beneficiaries. Types of trust 1. A bare trust is a simple form of trust where the beneficiary is absolutely entitled to the trust property. Bare trusts are often used to hold investments for children (and for adults who wish to hold shares anonymously). 2. Under an interest in possession trust, a beneficiary is entitled to the net income of the trust – the trustees must hand over all the income after expenses and taxes. These are often used in Wills to give a spouse an income for life. Once the spouse has died, the assets pass to the children. 3. A discretionary trust is one where the trustees have more discretion over how they distribute income and capital. For example, several children might be the beneficiaries of a discretionary trust, and the trustees could provide money to each child as they need it. A variety of other kinds of trust can be set up for specific purposes, but flexible discretionary trusts are often the best way of achieving the desired results. The tax treatment of trusts depends on such factors as the kind of trust, the value of the assets put into it, and who the beneficiaries are. This is a complex area but with careful planning trusts can be used to effectively plan for the future.. You should take advice on whether trusts could be of benefit for your particular circumstances and requirements.

Health Meditation Matters Last month I wrote about a new project starting called the Bridge of Mindfulness. I’ve made six short videos and the basic theme for the next couple of weeks being ‘Desire and Aversion’ and how such bodily processes compel us to act in ways that are unhelpful. I’ve looked at the process of mindful eating and other daily habits. The feedback has been very positive and I will be continuing with this cool little project. To view these short videos go to You Tube on the internet and search for the channel ‘Neville Evans’. Then all you have to do is subscribe and You-Tube will remember your preferences. I am at the present time writing our spring newsletter and there are some wonderful opportunities coming up. A trip to Chithurst Monastery and a group visit to Caldey Island. Massive Spike In Autism Rates A major missing link in the search for what’s triggering a massive spike in autism rates appears to be the world’s bestselling weedkiller, Roundup. Dr. Stephanie Seneff from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been studying the autism issue for several decades, and her copious research has led her to the almost undeniable conclusion that glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, is a major driver of autism. What was once an extremely rare health condition now afflicts
roughly 1 in 68 children, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And if things continue down the current path, says Dr. Seneff, nearly half of all children born in the year 2025 will be born with autism, which can result when the gut microbiome of humans is destroyed, which depletes the body of needed minerals and can exacerbates the toxicity of other chemicals, including those added to vaccines. Know Your Blood Pressure This short, simple test is being offered free at Trinity Church in Porthcawl, on Saturday 18th April between 10am and 4pm and is organised by the Rotary Club of Porthcawl. High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the most preventable causes of illness and premature death in Wales. It’s a major risk factor for stroke, heart attack and cognitive decline as well as cardiovascular disease. Luckily, simple lifestyle changes, such as exercise, a balanced diet low in salt, maintaining a healthy weight, and in more serious cases, medication, can lower your risk. Tests will be administered by health professionals - trained to identify potential problems and advise on appropriate action. So call in, take the test and… know your blood pressure! Rtn. POEMS Please
The Witches Brew
Thank you to my Valentine
Please Mr Counciller won’t you tell the truth, Tell me why my council tax is going through the roof. Tell me who it benefits or where the moneys’ spent? Show me that its being used exactly where its meant.
Fillet of a fenny snake In the cauldron boil and bake; Round and round the devils go And then flies in a devil’s toe; Toad, that under cold stone lies Days and knights has rotten eyes; Double double toil and trouble Fire burn and cauldron bubble; Tarantula venom and a bunch of rot Slide casually into the pot; An evil laugh, a rotting limb Goes nicely with the cold heart of a king; Double double toil and trouble Fire burn and cauldron bubble; A werewolf skull, a salted shark A sceptic eye and a dogs bark; A plagued rat and rotting flesh Double double toil and trouble Fire burn and cauldron bubble. Sam Matthews – Year 6 Afon y Felin Primary School
Thank you to my Valentine, For calming my racing heart, Thank you to my Valentine, For stopping my life falling apart.
Please Mr Councillor lets get it off our chest, Why is our Borough falling short of all the rest. The services it pays for are no-where near the mark, The bin collectings rubbish and policing pretty stark. Please Mr Councillor you need to get a grip, Your hold on reality has taken a real slip. Theres pretty gardens and pavements popping up in public space, While the roads are full of holes they are a real disgrace. Please Mr Councillor why do you fleece us all? you ruined Bridgend Town and now your working on Porthcawl. Most of us work hard for the money that you take, Its time you started eating humble pie instead of cake! Mrs S Hamilton-Howell Kenfig Hill

BOOK OF THE MONTH: The Mobile Library By David Whitehouse This is a wonderful whimsical tale about Bobby whose mother has left him, his father is abusive and his best friend disappears after trying to turn himself into a cyborg. He is befriended by Val and daughter Rosa and they end up running away in a mobile library, picking up a runaway convict, being chased by the police and exploring lots of stories. The ending was perfect, so enjoy. All these books and many more are available from your local library which may be closer than you think! If you live in North Cornelly there is a Little Library in Angel Way at the top of Mawdlam Way provided by Picador and The Reading Agency to promote David Whitehouse’s novel Mobile Library and to celebrate reading. There will be 12 Little Libraries and this is the only one in Wales. There are also community bookshelves such as in Coast in Porthcawl. If you have a PIN number for your Library card you can also download books to most electronic devices from home and there is now an app for Bridgend Libraries if you use an apple device.

Arts Cawl a Chân with Traditional Music for St. David’s Day Cantorion Coety were the guests of Ogmore Valley Male Voice Choir at their recent St. David’s Day celebrations, held at their Ogmore Vale Bethlehem Centre. The whole evening of traditional Welsh music and fare was thoroughly enjoyed by both choirs and a full audience. The Ogmore Vale Choir members and officials were the perfect hosts, having decorated the hall in Welsh flags and bunting, and for good measure they served everyone during the interval with lamb cawl and traditional vegetables, followed by bara brith and Welsh cakes. The hard work and preparations paid off, since everyone attending clearly appreciated the whole experience. The music programmes of both choirs also reflected the mood of St. David’s Day. The Ogmore Vale men opened their programme with Calon Lan, then amongst other items they sang Hafan Gobaith and Rachie. The Ogmore Choir also had the services of Catrin Eleri Jenkin, as a soprano soloist. She joined the Choir to sing Bendigedig by Welsh composer Robat Arwyn. Cantorion Coety were warmly received by the audience, they also sang well known pieces including the Welsh hymn Pantyfedwen, written by the late W. Rhys Nicholas of Porthcawl, and a rousing rendition of Safwn yn y Bwlch. The evening ended with everyone joining forces to sing Moliannwn and the Welsh National Anthem. Alun Roberts Jones (Publicity Officer) Cantorion Coety
A Film Maker’s Point of View ‘The Beach Ball’ is one of the earliest films produced by my company, Downwood Film Productions, and was made in 1991. Towards the end of the previous summer, three young children were tragically drowned at Ogmore-by-Sea, and the local authority and life-saving clubs were keen to support the production of a locally-shot film that drew attention to the danger lurking in our often seemingly benign coastal waters. The story centers around a beach ball belonging to a little boy which accidentally finds its way into the sea at Ogmore and drifts across to Porthcawl, with three potentially dangerous situations occurring along the way, resolved safely by the vigilance of the lifeguards. The film was widely distributed at the time of its release by the Royal Life Saving Society UK, and was seen in all parts of the United Kingdom. Today, it may be watched on YouTube, on the downwoodfilms channel, and now seems to be rather quaint, compared with today’s preference for fast-paced editing – but the message remains the same: the sea will be as treacherous in 2015 as it was then, and the film was made with one intention, to help save children’s lives. If any local primary schools wish to show the film, either by DVD or download, please contact me. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Tel: 01656 771775 or 07510 934299 Seaside News | 46

Porthcawl Male Choir News The event currently taking up most of the choir’s rehearsal time is the forthcoming concert arranged by the Welsh Association of Male Choirs which is to be held in the Royal Albert Hall in mid May. Choirs from all over the Principalty will join together under the baton of Alwyn Humphries to sing a variety of new and old musical pieces. A final rehearsal took place at Stradey Park Llanelli on Sunday March 15th, where the South and West Wales choirs were taken through the whole program by Musical Director Alwyn Humphries. The choir’s annual general meeting was held recently and a number of changes to the committee took place. Ray Street, who has held the post of Secretary for the past seven years, decided that the time had come for him to stand down. Chairman, Roy Bowen thanked Ray for his sterling work in the time that he was in office and said that Ray had carried out a very difficult role in a most efficient manner and he understood that seven years was a long time to hold the onerous and time consuming office of secretary. The choir’s next concert will be on Sunday 17th May at Tabernacl Chapel, Derwen Road, Bridgend when we will perform Elgar’s ‘Spirit of England’ with orchestra, together with other works. The main work by Elgar was written in 1916 and is a stirring setting of three war poems by Laurence Binyon, which Elgar dedicated “to the memory of our glorious men”. Under its new Musical Director Matthew Nash, the Choir are excited about performing this very special work in this commemoration year. Further details of the concert programme will be confirmed in the next issue. We are currently looking for keen and enthusiastic singers to join the choir – please note that there is no formal audition. For full details on how to join the choir, please go to our ‘Contact’ section on our website: www.cor-tabernacl-choir.co.uk. Anne Thomas
Challenging preconceptions of ceramic practice with a diverse mix of modern and contemporary sculptures, installations and objects, the focus this month is on an awe inspiring exhibition entitled: Fragile? (18th April - 4th October). Did you ever expect to visit a ceramics exhibition and be asked to bring your vinyl collection along with you? Or to be invited to walk over and destroy one of the exhibits? Fragile? explores the beauty and diversity of contemporary ceramics practice in its widest sense. It explores the artistic and expressive possibilities of ceramics as a material, including the contradiction between two of its inherent qualities: durability and fragility. Works by modern masters such as Picasso, Edmund de Waal and Betty Woodman are shown alongside special commissions by contemporary Welsh artists - Lowri Davies, Adam Buick and Claire Curneen. A documentary captures the creation of these new works. Installations by Phoebe Cummings, Clare Twomey and Keth Harrison add to the six-gallery show. While Cummings presents a decorative sci-fi world on raw clay, Twomey asks visitors to walk over her art in order to destroy it. Fragile? is generously funded by the Colwinston Charitable Trust and supported by The Derek Williams Trust. Josephine Lewington MA

Stag’s World Of Rock I was really impressed after my recent visit to Porthcawl’s Grand Pavilion to attend their regular monthly acoustic club night held in the downstairs Stage Door room. Lin Williams, who’s been running the event for the last few years, is doing a fantastic job and has a really good set-up of different acts and a good clientele! Bridgend’s The Blims were in action, and on top form as usual and had everyone on their feet. Look out for Lin’s next acoustic show! As promised, one for your diary, again at the Pavilion, on the 2nd July is one of rock’s biggest-selling artists, Justin Hayward from The Moody Blues. The man who had all those hits with the Moodies, ‘Tuesday Afternoon’, ‘Question’, ‘The Voice’, ‘Your Wildest Dreams’ and ‘Nights in White Satin’, is playing a few rare solo shows, which is a major coup for South Wales. Justin also sang and played on the hits ‘Eve of the War’ and ‘Forever Autumn’ off the multi-platinum selling Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds album. The Moody Blues sell out arenas all over the world, so to catch Justin in this small setting will be a one off - I suggest you get your tickets early! Got any music news, give me a call or text. Pyle & Porthcawl Photographic Society We’ve had some great presentations in the last month, including an excellent one from Gareth Martin. We also held our annual Portfolio Competition, into which, each member could enter four prints or four digital images; one from each of the following genres: Abstract, Landscape, Nature and People. Vince Penticost skillfully judged the competition, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each image.
The winner was Geoff Baker with his images ‘Long time waiting’, ‘Monknash’, ‘Bring it on’ and ‘Fire at will’. Second place went to Richard Craze and Third place went to Trevor Owen. Congratulations to Geoff for winning the competition and a big thank you to all who participated for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. We are also working with Porthcawl Town Council in regards to their Porthcawl Photography Competition, which is now open for entries until 1st July. Full details at http://promotingporthcawl. com/

Would you like to taste some ‘plot-to-pot’ food and sample home-made wine in the company of other like-minded folk? Well, if this is you, come along to the first-ever Bridgend Kitchen, Garden and Allotment Show, which is part of the much bigger Bridgend County Show at Pencoed College. The County Show has something for everyone including: trade stands, craft stalls, show jumping, dog show, poultry show, rabbits and goats, and this year it also has our section. We welcome entries from vegetable growers, flower arrangers, bakers and makers, arts and crafters. Apart from growing-cooking tasters there will be entertainment for children. It would be great to see you – better still why not enter! Look out for publicity in the press, online and social media. Programme, entry details and further information can be obtained by email (ejohnhowley@btinternet.com). Please note that all profits from our part of the County show will be donated to a local registered charity. E John Howley

Sport Bridgend College Football Academy Continues To Grow
Bridgend College Football Academy education and football programme continues to grow and receive well-deserved plaudits as a result of excellent work in the classroom and on the football field. The College programme led by ex-Welsh international, ex-Cardiff City player, UEFA “A” Licence coach and BBC Wales football pundit Jason Perry is delighted with the course and its achievements over the past 14 years. As a result of hard work, building the programme has matured, and helped many students progress into Universities home and abroad, achieve their dream jobs such as Ross Williams (analysis department) who is employed by Southampton FC, Darren Robinson who is a full timer lecturer, David Thomas a fully qualified and practising chiropractor and other similar students who have benefited from using football as a vehicle to academic success. The BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence) course is based at the Pencoed Campus and is aimed at young men aged 16 to 19 years of age who have a key interest in football. The qualification is equivalent to 3 A-levels and led by a variety of experienced lecturers with knowledge and expertise in certain areas and modules of the course. The full time professional coaching programme is run by UEFA qualified coaches, ex-professional and A Licence coach Jason Perry. Football training is timetabled 4 times a week and the College is part of the nationally recognised (colleges only) Wednesday Football League. This insures the students play a competitive and high standard of football. This investment in excellence has resulted in past students/players being signed by Cardiff City, Lincoln City, Welsh League and English NonLeague clubs whilst the hall of fame continues to grow with international recognition at colleges, schools and Wales u18 and u21 international level. The past 14 years the College have also invested in their excellent facilities to support the modern game, supported by key partners at home and in the USA. Current facilities include a professional grass-playing surface with full time grounds man, 3G pitch, Sony Analysis Performance Centre, Media Centre, Fitness Performance Centre, State of the art weights room and educational study centre. The College are currently recruiting for September. For further information on interviews, training, club tours then please contact Jason Perry on 01656 302600, email jperry@bridgend. ac.uk or follow us on our twitter account BridgendColleg2 Jason Perry

Porthcawl RFC Under 7s Another busy month for the boys - with matches against Kenfig Hill, Maesteg Celtic, Cwmafon and Cwmgrach. Excellent performance by the team with 2 wins a draw and 2 losses. The changing weather conditions have not stopped the boys from getting their boots on and putting in continued effort.
It was nice to start training back at the club this month now that the nights are getting lighter, but a big thank you has to go to Parkdean for allowing us to use their floodlit multi sport facility throughout the winter months. We are holding a fundraising disco which is open to all children under the age of 11 at the Rugby Club on the 17th April 6-8pm. Tickets £2 and are available by telephoning 07812 520799. Tai Chi Training A Tai Chi course for a limited number of students is being planned for our Pencoed venue. The aim is that after the course the students will be able to start their own classes in venues in the communities near where they live. Anyone interested should email Robert (Bob) for further details at: sunman@gmx.co.uk
Deadline date is always the 15th of the month
Sport Porthcawl Lifeguard News Despite the winter weather Porthcawl Lifeguards have not been idle over recent months, we now have two sets of solar panels installed on the club building which will help towards making the club self funding in years to come. Club members have also been busy carrying out vital maintenance to the building and equipment ready for the upcoming season, and we would like to thank them for their work and commitment to the club. If you happened to be down on Coney Beach on a Sunday afternoon during the last couple of months and saw a group of teenagers with some slightly older guys, some in shorts and t-shirts, all running, jumping and doing various ridiculous exercises badly, that was us trying to increase our fitness for the coming season. Also with the new season almost upon us we will be looking to recruit new members to the club especially in our nipper section, so if you are between 7-12 years of age, can already swim competently and would like to have fun on the beach and in the sea in a safe environment with a club that can involve the whole family please have a look at our website for further info at porthcawlifeguards.co.uk.
