April is such a busy month in the garden, tasks are endless, let’s hope for good weather! On the vegetable front - time to chit and plant 2nd early potatoes, sew all suitable veg seeds out of doors in well prepared soil, but remember to cover and protect if the weather is really chilly. Support peas and prepare for your runner beans being sewn in May by getting those bean sticks ready. Now is also the time to inspect fruit bushes, strawberry plants for signs of mites, aphids, caterpillars and powdery mildew and treat accordingly. It’s also the time to apply Apple and Pear scab controls. The Daffodils are still blooming and spring flowers fill our borders, they lift our spirits with their lovely colours, we need them more than ever this year I feel. Things are easing and The Gardening Club is running a click & collect service for members to purchase their gardening supplies on Saturday mornings. CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB April prepares her green traffic light and the world says go! (Christopher Marley) Spring is here and it’s time to get busy in the garden, with extra time on our hands your garden will be the best it’s ever been (hopefully!) Early sowing of salads should be ready to pick now, cut off the leaves instead of pulling up the plant and they should re-sprout new ones (a bit like dead-heading really) sow a pinch of seeds every couple of weeks and you should have fresh salad to harvest all spring and summer long (my tortoise loves them!) From mid- April you can start sowing courgettes, cucumbers, leeks, tomatoes and sweetcorn all yummy! Mowing the lawn should be a regular task now, gradually lowering the blades each time if you cut too low too quickly the lawn will repay you by turning yellow! Not pretty. If you grow lilies watch out this month for the scarlet lily beetle, hunt down the adults, they are out and about first, they love a bit of sunshine, a good spray of soapy water should sort them out. The April flower is the daisy, did you know they grow everywhere in the world except Antarctica! Chris Early
