FUNDRAISING FOR UKRAINE
Dear Editor, Less than one in ten people will survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. However, survival rates can increase significantly if a Defibrillator is used, and CPR is performed. That is why friends and neighbours of The Retreat, Nottage, Porthcawl have made it their mission, with the help of the charity Calon Hearts, to have access to a fully working and publicly accessible defibrillator close to their homes in The Retreat and plan to have many of them trained in how to use it. The group has begun raising funds and accepting donations for this equipment (via their just giving page www.justgiving. com/fundraising/friendsoftheretreat), by holding regular coffee mornings, raffles, beginners art classes, cheese & wine parties and quiz nights. A VOICE FOR THE FUTURE It’s been a roller-coaster (excuse the pun) month for A Voice for the Future! Following our discussions over recent months we had eagerly awaited a decision from Cabinet regarding the reduction of residential numbers and the inclusion of a linear park on Salt Lake. The 8th March came and, to much excitement, it was agreed that a 200m x 70m coastal park along the Eastern Prom would go ahead and that it would progress through further placemaking. Unfortunately the accompanying public reports pack contained a revised place-making strategy; within which this potentially amazing space was shown as including within the area, the Promenade to the East, a service road to the West and an enormous paved area in between. Needless to say that excitement about opportunities to create a wonderful, inclusive, accessible, green, adaptable, protected space was soon downgraded to just a small step towards, to be honest, disappointment. Onwards and upwards is the plan for April - time to get this

Dear Editor, I am so proud of my 7 year old grand daughter Cosy Lewis who has raised an amazing total of £202 for the Ukrainian appeal that I thought she deserved a mention in your magazine not just for the total achieved but also by way of a thank you to all those generous contributors. This achievement was reached by firstly sitting all Saturday afternoon on the drive at her home in Newton where she had set out a stall of her and her brother Oshi’s toys and clothes for sale. Next she took a home made cake into school and left it in the staff room for the teachers to buy. Topped up by more contributions from friends and family she reached her £202 total. I think this is a very impressive achievement for such a young person and demonstrates how passionately even the youngest amongst us feel about this dreadful war in Ukraine. HISTORY THE OLD PORTHCAWL POLICE STATION Part 2 Between the wars the building had been extended creating a new charge room (sea end). In 1939 Inspector Ewart Evans, newly appointed, realised one of his first challenges was the lack of parking in Porthcawl. He left for Cardiff within the year. A bigger challenge was to come for Inspector David Jones from Aberkenfig, aided by Inspector Charles Brice and his Special Constables, with the onset of WW2. Yet, it was Inspector Lancelot Bailey, Port Talbot, who was brought in to supervise the case of a murder in 1945. Howard Grossley, a Canadian deserter, had been convicted of murdering his common-law wife, Lily Griffiths in March. He spent a couple of nights in Porthcawl Police Station before later being hanged at Cardiff Goal in September. Interestingly during the war, the station was a base for covert meetings and recruitment of local units of the British Resistance Organisation. These secret units, which were formed in preparation for the possible threat of Nazi occupation, were spread across the UK. The unit that met locally was under the control of a Major Johnson of Porthcawl. Life after the war returned to normal until the 24th April when police officers had the unenviable task of locating the capsized Mumbles lifeboat and informing relatives. Ceri Joseph
BRIDGEND’S POST OFFICE
Bridgend’s first Head Post Office occupied the recently refurbished Davies Building in Caroline Street, opened in 1892. In 1924 this was replaced by the imposing building at the top of Court Road, opposite the station. It is the work of architect 14 | seaside news
Archibald Bulloch (1882–1971) who designed a number of buildings for the Ministry of Works. It connected to the sorting office, one level down, accessed from Station Hill. A garage was later added in Derwen Road, accessed from the Post Office via the sorting office. It is one of the very few public buildings to bear the cypher of Edward Vlll, the Monarch at the point of its opening in 1936. In the 1970s student Christmas postmen, like me, came back from delivering post to sort outgoing letters down there in the cold when there was no room in the nice warm sorting office upstairs. Alas, this splendid building now stands empty with the Head Post Office in the nondescript Dunraven Place building and the front face of Royal Mail a portakabin in Waterton. Interestingly, the garage and the two telephone boxes outside the Court Road building are protected with a grade 2 listing but not the building itself. MEET MY ANCESTORS
My 6 x great grandfather William Axe was born in 1733 in Cornhill, Middlesex to William Axe (1697–1768) and Mary Dry (1704–1737). He married his wife, Ann, c1765. No records of Ann survive. William lived in Birchin Lane, Cornhill where his son, Samuel was a property developer. Land tax records reveal that William was a Waterman to the Preventative Officers. Watermen were an essential part of early London. They would ferry passengers along and across the Thames. With bad rural roads and narrow congested city streets, the Thames was the most convenient highway in the region. Indeed, until the mid-eighteenth century London Bridge was the only Thames bridge below Kingston upon Thames. As a Waterman to the Preventive Officers, overseeing the trade and potential smuggling that occurred on the river, William was well remunerated. Inspecting Commanders received financial rewards on par with a Rear-Admiral. During the Industrial Revolution, captains and boat owners made fortunes as watermen. William died on 21 October 1809. He left his money and possessions to his wife, Ann, but she died on 7 December 1809 so in effect William’s estate passed to his son, Samuel, and daughter, Mary. Robbie Brewster, Lloyd Jenkins and Jay Donagh were members of 90s band Bold as Love, then changed their name to Revolva and gained a big reputation. Their new songs really rock, so have a listen. The last time the choir were able to tour was April 2019, with a very successful tour to Polperro in Cornwall. The great news is that the choir is now embarking on a tour to the Isle of Wight. Highlight of the tour is a charity concert in aid of Cancer Research on the 2nd April in St. Johns Church, Sandown. Two busloads of choristers, partners and friends are looking forward to a great weekend. The choir would like to welcome new accompanist Agnes Pottage. 17-year-old Agnes has joined us until September when she hopes to go to university to study music. A huge round of applause from the choristers greeted her excellent first practice. Well done, Agnes. After two long years the choir recently was able to hold its AGM. A well-attended meeting voted in long standing chorister John Pearman as our new Chairman. Many thanks to outgoing Chairman Roy Bowen for all his hard work over the last 3 years. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Before the days of independent film production, when the cinema exhibited films mostly made by the big companies, each had its own distinctive logo at the beginning. Many of us will recall MGM’s roaring lion, Universal’s spinning globe, Paramount’s snow-covered mountain peak, Columbia’s lady bearing a torch, Rank’s bare-chested man striking a giant gong, London Films’ Big Ben. Ealing Studios, as understated as ever, had a small motif of laurel leaves. Not surprisingly, Hollywood was big and bold, there was nothing especially subtle about it, their films were made on large budgets and they were determined to proclaim to the world, in their own inimitable way, “ours are the best”. But there is one logo that seems to have slipped into the past, and it is my own personal favourite. I first saw it as a young child, when a school friend’s father screened “Oh Mr Porter” for the ten-year-old’s birthday party. It was made by Gainsborough Pictures Ltd, with their quaint and elegant logo of a framed portrait of a lady of the late 18th century, dressed in all her finery, turning graciously to smile at the audience, accompanied by music in the style of a neoclassical waltz. As I type this the weather is gorgeous Spring is definitely on its way and I’ve just had the most fantastic time at the musical event which the Porthcawl Lions put on for us. It was absolutely awesome. I came away from there with a big smile on my face that lasted well into the night I could not sleep I was that hyped up. There were songs from West Park School Choir, they were fab, then it was Porthcawl Comprehensive School performing extracts from their up and coming show Legally Blond so, good and what a talented bunch of teenagers. Then there was a choir called Sounds Familiar, they just blew me away they did a really emotional dedication to the people of the Ukraine. Gorgeous. Then last but by no means least we had the Porthcawl Community Orchestra. Mind blown. They were just fantastic. I would like to thank all those who came and paid tickets to the event, to The Hi-Tide to all the performers but mostly to Gloria and the rest of the Porthcawl Lions for doing it for us in the first place. It was fantastic. They raised a huge £1,000 which will help us massively. If you know anyone who is finding life a struggle whilst they are going through treatment for Cancer, please do point them in our direction. Finally, please do follow us on all social media platforms and remember we help those who are finding life a struggle financially whilst going through treatment for Cancer. From last months’ column did you give it a go and try following your breath and thoughts for a short while? And what did you notice? Was there peace, calm, clarity and an empty space? Or, perhaps, did you think … ‘why is my heart beating so loudly, what is the rushing noise in my head, what’s for tea, where’s my car keys, who is drilling outside, why is the cat sitting on me?’ Any combination of these feelings is completely normal and yet, until we take a pause in life, we never really notice what is going on in our minds. Paying attention to our thoughts ensures that we can begin to choose which thoughts we wish to listen to and act on. If our habits do become our values, it may be worth checking in regularly to see what we are thinking about and decide if these are the thoughts, we want to direct our life or maybe pause and reassess what is happening and question how we can best achieve the life we desire. NEWS PROPOSED FENCE RAISES CONCERNS I have been contacted by residents in the Ton Kenfig/Mawdlam area concerned about plans submitted by NRW to construct a 5-kilometre stock proof fence along the edge of the Kenfig Nature Reserve. BCBC planners have not yet dealt with the application, which was submitted in November. Residents are worried about access especially as this is common land although I understand that there will be numerous gates, styles and access points within the fence so continued public access may not be an issue. But the main concern seems to be that notification of the proposal was not properly conducted. NRW claims that public notices were placed at the ‘entrances’ to the site but local residents claim that no-one saw any notices. The new fence will run from near Mawdlam Church as far as the boundary with Pyle and Kenfig golf course. If this fence enables the amount of land available for grazing to be increased, there are fears for the protection of rare species located in the reserve such as the fen orchid. I will be contacting NRW to find out exactly what is planned and what impact this will have on the ecology of the reserve. DR ALTAF HUSSAIN Regional Senedd Member

From donating clothes and essential items to collecting Easter eggs in the school to give to children, the pupils were caring, considerate and conscious to learn how they could do more. To celebrate International Women’s Day, the school had visits from local female athletes, scientists, musicians, and emergency service professionals. The school has done a fantastic job of celebrating women in our community and inspiring the children to go on and do great things – no matter who they are. Da Iawn! SALT LAKE CAR PARK NEEDED TO PROTECT JOBS While news that the number of new homes proposed for Salt Lake will be cut by a third is welcome, this will not solve the problem of where day trippers will park once all car parking there is scrapped. Labour’s relentless war on the car, waged from Welsh Government level down, goes on apace. Yes, the council is proposing to build a multi storey car park on Hillsboro Place but is this viable? Who will build it, how many spaces will it provide and, crucially, how much will people have to pay to park in it? In any case, no multi-storey can replace the 1,000 spaces lost at Salt Lake. We are facing a net loss of hundreds of spaces in the town. This will have a devastating impact on the town’s future as a seaside resort. Hundreds of visitors are attracted to Porthcawl in summer. So where will they park? Unless people can park easily at reasonable cost they will go elsewhere. Aberavon beckons. How would Porthcawl’s ice cream parlours, cafes and pubs then survive? Hundreds of jobs are at stake. In their reckless quest for net zero, Labour is forgetting that electric cars still require infrastructure. JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

SCHOOLS ST CLARE’S SCHOOL NEWS
It is two years since the unprecedented shutdown of the education system in Wales as coronavirus took hold. Fortunately, we were in a completely different position to many schools. In April 2020, we moved everyone from Nursery to Sixth Form to our Online Learning Programme. Our pupils benefitted from a fully interactive, structured timetable with the same scheme of work, same high-quality teaching, interaction with their peers and teachers as well as assessment, marking and teacher feedback. They enjoyed an excellent and truly ‘uninterrupted’ education, and we were mentioned in Estyn’s Annual Report 2020-21 for our distance learning curriculum programme and the support offered to pupils and parents during lockdown. Throughout this past year, pupils’ safety and emotional wellbeing has continued to be placed at the heart of our offer. Maintaining high quality, continuous education has been demonstrated to have been integral in sustaining both academic progress and the emotional health of children. Teachers worked tirelessly to provide a range of opportunities for children to remain settled, happy and grounded despite the pandemic. Consequently, we have seen excellent attendance during this past academic year, with teachers offering face-to-face teaching in school whilst live-streaming lessons to pupils who needed to self-isolate. It was exciting to perform ‘Hei Mistar Urdd’ as a whole school to celebrate the Urdd’s centenary and to contribute to their record-breaking success. We also celebrated St Dwynwen’s Day at the beginning of term & the children enjoyed hearing about 26 | seaside news
the patron saint of Welsh lovers and creating St. Dwynwen’s Day cards and crafts. We celebrated Saint David’s Day with the first eisteddfod for a number of years. We enjoyed excellent singing, art and poetry competitions in each year group. The year 5 & 6 poetry entries were considered for the eisteddfod chair under aliases and after much deliberation the first prize was awarded to ‘Jeremy Hopscotch’ - Kasey in year 6. Congratulations & well done everybody! With preparations for the implementation of the Curriculum for Wales gaining pace, and the expectation that we make considerations in regards learning an international language, we have begun learning some German in key stage two. We were also very fortunate to have an information sharing visit from Sophie from Rostock. Bilingualism has many advantages including making it easier to learn additional languages, strengthened cognitive abilities, open mindedness and flexibility. PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS We love this time of year with the longer days and warmer weather. We particularly enjoyed celebrating International Women’s Day earlier in the term. To inspire children about gender equality, children throughout the school participated in various activities to celebrate women’s achievements and challenge gender stereotypes and bias. We were so grateful to all the incredible and inspirational local women who supported us – Helen Jenkins (3x Olympian and 2x World Champion Triathlete), Chloe Shaye (Bridgend Young Labour), Sarah Murphy (MS Bridgend & Porthcawl), Jenna and Megan (Porthcawl RFC), Annie (Marine Biologist), Angharad (RNLI), Molly, (published author), Lydia (Crossfit athlete), Jo (prison officer), Katie and Tia (firefighters), Erin (soldier), Sian (commonwealth medallist). At the end of term, our families generously donated Easter Eggs for Porthcawl Foodbank and raised money for Ukraine with a non-uniform day. Our little school has grown dramatically over the last few years and, for the first time ever; we have 200 children on roll. We are a small and friendly school, set in extensive grounds. PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
We were so thrilled that we were able to see a glimpse of our traditional annual Eisteddfod return this year in the Jubilee Theatre, even if it did have to be virtual once again for all pupils to enjoy! The onstage competitions displayed the wealth of talent that we have at PCS and it was encouraging to see so many pupils regaining the confidence to perform and take part. We are looking forward to being back at the Pavilion next year! THE BRIDGE We have a busy term ahead of us. Coming up is Red Nose day, where we will wear red on Friday and make bacon rolls to sell. All donations will then go towards Comic Relief. Recently, we’ve been doing some indoor gardening, planting beetroot, carrot and tomato seeds ready to transfer to our allotment when the weather warms up. We have also been making pancakes for Shrove Tuesday and Welsh cakes for Saint David’s day. We celebrated World Book day by dressing up as book characters such as Cruella Devil and her Dalmatian. We also saw characters from the Bible as two pupils turned up as Mary and Joseph. Thanks to Mrs Lawrence, we did several activities linked to Marvel comics, such as designing our own super hero badges and creating comic strips. We were also lucky to have our very own Welsh author Mrs Mattravers read one of her stories to us- The Elephant and the Buns. Our theme this term is ID, which fits perfectly with our Rights Respecting Article 8: You have the right to an identity. Finally, although Easter is a little while off, let’s hope for some warmer weather so we can play more outdoor sports. Cameron, Ellie & Tom

FEATURES WONDERFUL WEDDING AT KENFIG NATURE RESERVE!
Well, we held our first wedding ceremony at Kenfig Nature Reserve on the 17th March and I am pleased to say it was a lovely occasion. Huge thanks to Paul and Ann for allowing me to be part of their special day and I wish them every happiness for the future. Tickets are starting to sell quickly now so if you want to come along you better be quick, just go the Eventbrite and search Kenfig Nature Reserve. We also have some activities arranged for the Easter weekend involving ducks, bunnies and Easter eggs so please pop up and see us and join in the fun. However, if you are just looking to relax and enjoy the lovely walks and the views remember Emma is here selling delicious coffee and cakes from The Hyde Out and from April onwards she will be open Wednesdays to Sundays 10am to 4.30 pm. PORTHCAWL LIFEBOAT STATION VISITS Good news from Porthcawl RNLI Water Safety Team, with the easing of Covid restrictions they are back to welcoming visitors to view the lifeboats and boathouse. At present the volunteers are on duty from 10:00 till 16:00 on a Saturday and either morning or afternoon on a Sunday depending on tidal times and lifeboat exercising times. They will normally be welcoming visitors when the tide is out whether that is morning or afternoon on a Sunday. Water safety presentations can be arranged for schools and organisations and plans are also in place to support water and lifesaving events for both adults and younger people within our locally. Water Safety Officer, Ian Cole OBE, said, ‘The team will also encourage group visits when Covid restrictions are totally removed here in Wales and the RNLI. Meantime if you are passing you are welcome to engage the team with questions and have a look around both boats and their launching vehicles. MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI
THE ROTARY CLUB PORTHCAWL
We meet at our usual venue the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill. Time 2pm our members are getting used to things getting back to normal. Katherine read out our minutes and Enid conducted all the WI business. We discussed the summer show in Aberavon and members looked at which categories we should enter. We have started a book-lending club and our scrabble club is in the Life Centre. The lunch club is ongoing and our walking club is enjoying a day out once a month rain or shine. Our talk this month was by one of our members, topic was how a dog changed your life, Faith is visually impaired and her guide dog is buddy. She told us how her life has been turned around by having buddy her respect for him was easy to see from giving her the freedom to go out and about to his intelligence disobedient where he won’t put faith in danger even if she commands him to. She says having him was like having a best friend, we have taken buddy to the WI quiz in the High Tide and he was as always on his best behaviour. We all enjoyed tea and biscuits a raffle completed our meeting call in next month we will be happy to see you. Christine Callaghan
We recently held its annual International Night at the Hi-Tide, when once again invited First Year students from Atlantic College came to share an evening of music, food and culture. Eleven International students and over 115 guests including Rotary District Governor Ray Bevan and Town Mayor Cllr Tracy Hill were welcomed by Rotarian Andrew Singer. Entertainment was provided by students from Porthcawl Comprehensive School who performed a preview of their forthcoming show ‘Legally Blonde’. After their meal, Rotarian Bobby Lewis introduced the students (from Italy, Spain, Japan, Norway, Afghanistan, UK, Togo, Mexico and Peru) and invited each student to give a presentation about their country, history and culture. They also explained how they underwent a highly competitive selection process in their own country to join Atlantic College. All the students enthusiastically delivered interesting presentations to an attentive audience. Claudia Valarino, Activity Coordinator Atlantic College, gave a brief introduction about Atlantic College and then thanked Porthcawl Rotary on behalf of the students. Porthcawl Rotary President, Clive Edwards, concluded the evening by thanking all those involved in organising the event and thanked everybody for attending and supporting Rotary. Rtn Robert Lee
BRIDGEND MINATURE RAILWAY It has been said that the slate quarries of North Wales “roofed the world”. However, their other legacy was the narrow-gauge railways that transported the slate from the quarry to the port or main line railway transfer for onward transportation to the world. These now preserved narrow-gauge railways are rightly a famous tourist attraction in Wales and give pleasure to many. Working hard on these railways were the famous quarry locomotives, namely those built by the Hunslet company of Leeds. These small basic but durable engines were first delivered to a Welsh quarry in 1870 and all over Britain they remain running in preservation. They proved rugged and reliable, able to work in harsh conditions. As were the men who drove them in all weathers without the luxury of a cab to shelter from the rain in. Model engineers produce scale models of these engines, and here at the Bridgend Miniature Railway we regularly run two such scale models. They are just at home pulling passengers as their ancestors were pulling loads of slate. Why not check our website and Facebook page for news of when we are open? You will be most welcome.

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Where is God when innocent people suffer? Where is God when children and civilians are victims of violence like that in Ukraine? At Easter we have a hint at an answer. In the suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross we see God entering into our world and suffering innocently with us the consequences of human evil. The bible says ‘For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews chp.4 vs.15-16). Where is God in our world’s suffering? You will find Him at the cross of Christ. The empty tomb is the Good News. The risen Lord Jesus Christ assures us that there is life beyond death and a God who will bring all things to justice. FEATURES THE INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PORTHCAWL SAMSON ZULU
Every year we hold a Birthday Party to celebrate the start of Porthcawl Inner Wheel and this year we had a delicious afternoon tea in the Grove followed by a quiz and raffle. Some of our members have not been too well and have had spells in hospital. We hope they all feel much recovered before too long. Our District Chairman Maria arranged for a social gathering of all District 15 members that were able to attend in Court Coleman, where another afternoon tea was enjoyed by all who went. Some of our members attended Porthcawl Rotary’s International Night in the Hi-Tide. We were entertained by the very talented cast of Porthcawl Comprehensive singing songs from their next show, Legally Blond, which is on in the Pavilion in the Summer. After a meal of steak and chips, we had talks from the students from Atlantic College, who told us all about their countries and their thoughts on Wales. Looking back, March has been busy with friendship and food and we have lots more to look forward to as the year goes on. Before taking part in a training course with Tools for Self Reliance, Samson was working on the streets selling mobile phone accessories. He had completed school, but had no skills, and felt that he had no real hope of improving his life without the means to earn more money. He found out about the training course through his local pastor, and signed up to learn metal fabrication. Samson said that at the beginning of the course, he struggled with the new skills, and didn’t think he would be able to manage – but with the encouragement and support of the staff, he persevered. He not only completed the training programme, he went on to undertake additional training and sit for a TEVETA Level 3 certificate, formally recognising his skills. He now works as a metal fabricator at a local company, and can afford to pay for the things his family needs. He said he is a changed man, and that his wife is very proud of him, “It is very important to support and help others to learn skills. Skills can move someone from bad habits, and get them to help others.” David Cook
COYCHURCH WI PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD We have really settled back into our usual meetings now. Last month we had a good turn out and an interesting speaker. Phil Styles from the National Coastwatch Institution showed a video of their history and their work. It is all run by volunteers who undertake training before starting. Porthcawl station is now the busiest in the UK, and we have cameras at Rest Bay Newton and Ogmore By Sea to help save lives. Prevention and advice is also part of their work. St. Donats now has a station manned by students from the Atlantic College. Flowers were presented to two members Kath Davies and Freda Rodgers, who had celebrated notable birthdays during lockdown. A short AGM this year as officers and committee remained the same. A vote of thanks was given to our officers, Helen Taylor, Jean Dorrington and Janet Anderson who had carried the Guild through a difficult two years. In February albeit a month later than arranged (Covid restrictions) we enjoyed our fish/chicken chips lunch along with the delicious desserts made by the committee. As our next meeting was on 1st March we celebrated St. David’s Day and the hall was decorated accordingly. The majority of the members wore traditional Welsh dress or rugby shirts and on each table Welsh fare was set out to be enjoyed along with tea/ coffee. It was a most interesting afternoon along with our guest speaker Rosemary Scadden as she demonstrated the various ways of how to fold and wear scarves. She brought along scarves in different fabrics, colours and shapes and showed how they could enhance an outfit immediately along with costume jewellery and scarf clips. She stressed not to hide scarves away and to hang them on scarf hangers. Two sub groups have been formed: a walking group meeting every alternate Monday morning (weather permitting) and every Monday afternoon a Tai chi group. We look forward to the varied and planned interesting programme of future events. Next meeting will be on 5th April at 1.30pm in The Williams Memorial Hall, Coychurch. Our members thoroughly enjoyed an amusing quiz in the February meeting. Much laughter and a chance to chat. In March we all loved a talk from Linda Feagan from the Dog Trust. She gave a history of the Trust and a comprehensive explanation of all its excellent facilities, services and aims. As a nation of dog lovers it was much appreciated. She brought along her 7-month-old Spaniel puppy. He was delightful and really stole the show. Lots of members wanted to take him home but he is Linda’s and she isn’t giving him up. We are in the process of restarting our reading group, which was disrupted by Covid, and we look forward to regular monthly literary discussions (not too highbrow). The clocks go back shortly and spring is in the air. Things are looking up. We are a small group and would welcome new members. We meet in the church hall along side All Saints on the Second Tuesday of the month at 2pm. If you would like more information please give me a ring. Tina Richards 01656 788725
No meeting in January because of Covid restrictions, but by February we were able to meet up again. Taking full advantage, the meeting was well attended including six new members. Our Speaker for the evening was Mr Peter Rees, who spoke very knowledgeably on his World Wide Travels and the art and craftwork he acquired along the way, it was all very interesting. We also observed a minute silence in memory of our faithful member Betty Metcalf, who was a very talented Lady and will be missed very much. At the March Meeting we again happily welcomed another new member. The Speakers were Simon Williams and Stephan Grylls, otherwise known as the ‘Blood Bikers’, they are part of a wonderful voluntary organization who deliver blood samples etc. to Hospitals or where ever needed. They are amazing individuals and very dedicated. The evening concluded with ‘Pancake Tossing’, the winner being Catherine Jones, the wooden spoon going to Margaret Roberts. With plenty of tea and Welsh Cakes to spur us on, we had great fun. M. Freeman

SKER WI On the 28th February 40 members enjoyed a Beetle Drive, with pancakes and welsh cakes that had been made by the committee and members, served at the interval with teas and coffee. The speaker on the 10th March was from Emmaus, the charity to end homelessness. Kate Lowery explained how Emmaus works to provide homes and meaningful work for as long as it is needed. She explains how Emmaus was started in 1949 and how it has progress to how it is today. The vote of thanks was given by Nora Williams. The next meeting, which is our Annual Meeting, will be held on the 7th April at 7pm at St David’s Church Hall. On May 12th our speaker is Lynn Tippet, JP. We have a full programme for the coming months with a Jubilee Party planned for the June meeting. Visitors are always welcome. Jackie Jones
Bridgend Town Twinning Association recently held their Annual General Meeting for 2022. All officers remained in post after which has been a difficult two years. No visits to or from our twin towns have been able to take place due to Covid restrictions but we are eagerly looking forward to hosting our French friends from Villenave d’Ornon once more in May. A party of twenty-two delegates will arrive in Bridgend on May 25th and stay until May 29th. A full programme of visits and activities is being planned including a concert between Cor Tabernacl and Chorale du Lac (their local choir). This will take place in Tabernacle Chapel, Derwen Road, Bridgend on Friday, May 27th at 7pm. An official dinner is also being arranged to celebrate the 25+ years we have been linked with Villenave. Due to Covid restrictions this had to be postponed in 2020 but we look forward to a pleasant evening renewing old friendships. A. Kendall

CHANGES TO HOW YOU DIVORCE On 6 April this year The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 reforms the legal requirements and process for divorce. The new laws will mean that instead of having to attribute blame to one party, a couple can mutually cite ‘irretrievable breakdown’ as the sole ground for wanting to obtain a divorce. This can be done in a joint statement or by an individual. The act aims to reduce the potential for conflict amongst divorcing couples by: • removing the ability to make allegations about the conduct of a spouse • allowing couples to end their marriage jointly The divorce application can be made online, meaning the postal delays can be avoided. There will be no requirement for the respondent to defend or to cross apply for a divorce which should benefit people who were victims of domestic abuse and controlling behaviour from being trapped by their abusive spouses who could delay or contest the petition previously it entirely. The act also introduces a minimum period of 20 weeks between the start of proceedings and application for final order. This provides couples with a meaningful period of reflection and the chance to reconsider. Where divorce is inevitable, it enables couples to cooperate and plan for the future.
As of this month, changes to the law mean that separating couples will be able to get a divorce, civil partnership dissolution or legal separation without having to blame each other for the breakdown of their relationship. Under the new law, separating couples will no longer have to blame the other by citing their adultery, unreasonable behaviour or desertion to show that the relationship has irretrievably broken down. In addition, the requirement to live separate and apart for a set period of time will be removed. Instead, the new law will encourage a more constructive approach to separation, promoting reconciliation and reflection where possible but ultimately trusting the judgment of the couple involved. It will now be possible for parties to make joint applications for divorce, both agreeing that the relationship has irretrievably broken down. However, one party will still be able to submit a sole application if their partner does not agree. As the ability to contest a divorce is removed, no one will need to worry about their partner contesting the divorce or dissolution and forcing them to go to court, saving considerable time, costs and stress New time scales mean that most couples will have to wait about six months for their divorce or dissolution to finalise. This time is intended to be a period of reflection for both parties to consider whether they truly want to separate. During this time, couples still need to make separate arrangements to divide their finances, agree to maintenance payments and sort out arrangements for their children. The changes have been a long time coming, and as there is no need to blame the other party, a joint application for divorce or dissolution allows a couple to have a completely amicable separation, and focus on their future in a positive way.

A change in divorce law has been long-awaited by many lawyers who consider the current laws to be outdated, and often increased animosity and acrimony in already difficult circumstances. It is unfair that a couple is forced to stay together even if they have tried to make their marriage work but have been unsuccessful. If you’re getting divorced and have started your application, the applicant will need to be submit by 4pm on 31 March 2022. Alternatively, you can wait until the new digital service is launched and apply after 6 April 2022. However, if you are halfway through your divorce, then the process should continue in the normal way until you have your Decree Absolute granted.

GARDENING LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
April is such a busy month for us gardeners, but therapeutic for those that do indulge. In such troubled times a couple of hours in the garden away from the constant news bulletins, such awful images, can help with everyone’s mental wellbeing. This month the tasks are endless, but here are just some of the jobs to tackle Hardy annuals can be sown, sweet peas can be sown outside, shrubs & roses are hungry to be fed. The lawn needs attention, as well as cutting, spring feeds can be applied and any bare patches can be re-sown. There are always weeds to keep under control, perennials to attend to, cutting back last year’s growth to make way for new shoots. Laleston Gardening Club will be holding it’s first Lecture since 2019 on the 11th April when Kevin Thomas will be our speaker on Bedding Plants. Places are limited so booking only I’m afraid. We are also holding our first Perennial Plant Sale on Saturday 23rd April, 10am. We will follow this with our usual Annual Plant Sale on Saturday May 7th. We are restarting our Ladies Section meetings commencing Tuesday, 5th April at 7.30pm. We’ve missed everyone at Cliff Cottage, looking forward to seeing you all again, a warm welcome awaits. CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB April – Sunshine and showers (well the sunshine’s new!) Time to start sowing seeds outside, lots of veg can go in your patch this month, lettuce, beetroot, leeks, turnips and peas, Make a drill with a stick (we’re not posh) the seed packet will say how deep, straight drills are ideal for veg but for flower seed, be creative, perhaps curvy or wavy drills, so pretty when they all come up and far more natural. Water the drill before seeding to dampen the base, when the seedlings emerge, hoe between the rows regularly so the weeds don’t strangle your babies! We have a plant sale on 23rd April in the front garden of 2, Brynn Terrace in Cefn, 10-12am. All are welcome. Come and stock up, support the club and adopt a homeless plant, you can never have too many! Hydrangeas, time to prune them, removing all the flower heads that have been left on over winter to protect the new buds underneath, what a maternal shrub this is! However, did you know the Hydrangea is symbolic of boastfulness because they produce many gorgeous flowers but very few seeds to continue breeding with. So all mouth and no go! The Stores are now fully stocked, eight pallets delivered the other day, with Clover compost, a Which ‘Best Buy’, grow bags, bagged Farmyard manure and Topsoil and peat free compost all available. Seed potatoes, £1.50 per Kg. Also shallots, onion sets and peas and beans sold loose. Bamboo canes-all lengths. Fertilizers like Gromore, Fish, Blood & Bone are sold by the Kg or full 25Kg bags. For various reasons we regret that it is unlikely that we will be running our Garden tours this year. Our donations to local Charities have continued with £1000 each going to our RNLI station for a Visitor Information Display and to Kenfig Sands Life Saving Club towards a new clubhouse. We are always happy to welcome new members fees being £4 and £3 for over 65’s. SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE SURF REPORT After the storm, and some more settled weather, mid-March sent us some good quality surf. Grey days, sunny days, offshore breezes, some runny noses and Omicron sneezes. At last today is the first spring like warm day - full of sunshine and vitamin D. This mid-March week forecasts a few days of sun and with waves and offshore winds to look forward to. The tides have been very small this week and they have lingered high for a few hours with no movement. With tides like this the surf spots that require a small high tide had good surf for 4 or 5 hours, instead of the usual 2 hrs before the tide would then go out.
